Released

Thank you all for your concern.

I was released 10:30 p.m. with Malaya Makati reporter Azchel Hachero, my blog trainee Jerome Layug, and more than 20 other journalists who were brought to Camp Bagong Diwa to be processed.

Some were finger-printed and told to undergo drug test. Our lawyers were not allowed to enter the camp. It’s a good thing the Abs-cBN assisted us. We were told to just give nothing more than our name and information on our ID.

Treating us like common criminals was simply condemnable.

PPI assails media arrests

From Malaya:

The Philippine Press Institute condemns the arbitrary arrest of members of the media who covered the standoff at the Manila Peninsula.

We see clear danger in the government’s seemingly hasty interpretation that the coverage and reporting of the standoff threatens national security as this may be the only ground that government may use in rounding up those who stayed inside the hotel.

We will continue to fight for press freedom under any kind of threat.

The fact that media were asked to leave but refused cannot justify the arrest. Media exposed themselves to the harm by the forces of the state and chose to do their duty. In the same manner, those who were outside the hotel but were not arrested were similarly performing their duties.

We find it a lame excuse that the arrest had to be made because there was intelligence information that the ranks of legitimate media have been infiltrated. The very simple thing to do was to have asked who they work for and check their respective agencies or companies.

We object to this undisguised martial law practice.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), urged the PNP to stop treating journalists who covered the Magdalo uprising as enemies of the state.

Jose Torres Jr., NUJP chairman, condemned “in the strongest terms” the rounding up of journalists and the confiscation of video footage of the standoff.

“We denounce the overkill that led to the tying of the hands of members of ABS-CBN’s technical team and reporters in what looked like a virtual arrest. The explanation by police officials and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro that the move was made to prevent the escape of Magdalo troops does not wash,” he said.

He said the technical team had superiors who could have been asked to verify their identities.

“While we concede the PNP’s right to conduct a thorough investigation of a crime – and we do not dispute that the takeover of the Peninsula was a crime – the police ought to follow legal procedures. Invitations to questioning should be differentiated from coercion; journalists have the option to accept the invitation and, certainly, should be accorded the basic right to counsel,” he said.

He said while the authorities have the right to demand a halt to coverage that could jeopardize the lives of state security forces, “any move for redress should pass through normal channels, involving management of television stations and not lowly ground staff.”

He said the live footage of the Pen standoff showed that the media did not block authorities from doing their tasks nor did they show any bias for Trillanes and his group. He said the rebels actually complained about media’s alleged bias for government.

“It is regrettable that a day that would have given the government a clear-cut political victory would be marred by knee-jerk reactions of the authorities. This government claims it is protecting democracy. It should realize that media is a prime component of the democracy it purports to serve,” he added.

Trillanes and Lim asked which side are you? Gloria or pagbabago…Mam Ellen is for pagbabago while the rest or majority of filipinos are for Gloria (?)…nakakalungkot pero
these two gentlemen have already shown their bravery at ginawa na nila lahat para sa pagbabago.

I hope that the next president will release and grant amnesty for them…sa ngayon nakakaawa na talaga he won the election pero di man lang nakapaglingkod ng maayos.

Napakaikli naman ng negotation nila samantalang pag may hostage drama ang tagal ng usapan pero in the case of Manila Pen ibang klase ang bilis kahit na may civilian sige banat.

All of us should conform to the standard of modesty even for a while inorder to reassure others that we have the right dose of one thing Trillanes is longing for….SANITY. The media is just a part of a collateral damage between Trillanes group’s fight for power. I strongly condemn the prosecution of the media if its main reason is to suppress truth, but media as well has to know where to draw lines between what is genuine and what is crap.

    Curfew daw! Bwahahaha!

For all opposition, instead of going for rebellion should dedicate their time in gathering evidences to prove their claims and allegations….starting from 2003 elections up until now. If they have any single prima facie evidence that can prove GMA has committed these crimes, they do not need to stress their voice and call people to march….I will be in front of the line.

It is not true that majority of the people has gone deaf, we have been listening intently all this time, its just that people has gone smart and are now capable of telling who is insane and who is not. 26. From Sen.Aquilino Pimentel Jr:

The imposition of curfew in metro manila and other places is a blatant breach of the Constitution.

No curfew can be imposed without authority of law.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is not the law. The number of generals backing her up does not constitute law.

We, the people, should defy the curtailment of our basic rights.

We are serving notice to the government and our people that the opposition in the Senate will use all legal means to challenge the imposition of curfew as it is bereft of any legal or constitutional basis.

We also deplore the baseless and warrantless arrest of the members of the mass media who were only covering the incident at the Peninsula Hotel today.

Up to this writing, the journalists are still in detention and there is no indication when they will be released.

The Gloria Macapagal Arroyo administration is using the methods of martial law without declaring it.

Our freedoms are being subverted not by direct action but by subterfuge.

Let us all remember that the price of liberty is vigilance!

  27. Although a cherished right of the people, freedom of the press is different from other liberties of the people in that it is both individual and institutional. It applies not just to a single person’s right to publish ideas, but also to the right of print and broadcast media to express political views and to cover and publish news. A free press is, therefore, one of the foundations of a democratic society, and as Walter Lippmann, the 20th-century American columnist, wrote, “A free press is not a privilege, but an organic necessity in a great society.” Indeed, as society has grown increasingly complex, people rely more and more on newspapers, radio, and television to keep abreast with world news, opinion, and political ideas. One sign of the importance of a free press is that when autocratic forces take over a country, their first act is often to muzzle the press.

It seems Trillanes’ victory in the May 2007 polls made him forget the lasting lessons of the July 2003 mutiny: As the public opinion polls showed soon afterwards, the people sympathized with them and their cause, but vigorously condemned the violent path they had chosen.

duren and dharmadumb…Nobody’s laughing, dont ever think you’ve got the last laugh…there isnt any…the loudest is yet to come.
The CSAFP and Service Commanders were asked to go to Malacanang last night, none of them showed up. Ermita wasnt party to the decisions there. FVR was being reached last night, he refused to take calls. The soldiers in Mindanao are angered with how the people, that is the media as they are civilians first and foremost, that they should protect were treated in that way by the police. And they definitely will not like that their fellow soldiers will be subjected to police custody. Clearly Puno has proven to the President he can fully utilize the PNP, its SAF most especially, against the soldiers who will pose a challenge. The SAF had been talked out on this, but they chose to blindly follow orders. The soldiers will always resent the rationale of orders coming from no more than a campaign strategist in the person of Puno. And Puno is all that the President has now and yes Norberto Gonzales whose idea by the way, is to assemble all loyal cabinet members and congressman to malacanang to show force, how weak. Only Ermita can call the Generals to the Palace. In Oakwood and in February 2006, you can see the full control of the military then, they were calling the shots and holding press conferences, and no less than the CSAFP was talking. Yesterday, the AFP was reduced to a pool of spokesman to handle the questions…this as the generals are trying to get their men together and have a firm hold of them again, truly its time for AFP to redeem the pride of the institution, after all its not this government that soldiers will fight for, its the people…the country.
to duren and dharmadumb, you can fall with your government, the soldiers will rise up again for this country.

  30. titser titser

This armed undertaking had failure written all over it. It had the DNA of the ineptly executed Oakwood mutiny and the inadequately prepared-for standoff. The idea that a commander-in-chief can be forced out of office by taking over a secluded building in Makati was ridiculous in 2003; it is only pathetic now.

He cynically put people in harm’s way, exploited the reporters and cameramen who covered him as his own protective shield, deliberately harmed the country’s image — and for what? To prove to the nation that his alternative to the “ruthlessness” of the Arroyo presidency was his own brand of incompetence.

  31. titser titser

“This was a publicity stunt,” says Benito Lim, a political analyst and professor at the Ateneo de Manila University. “It doesn’t seem to have been particularly well-planned and there also does not seem to have been a great deal of support from the masses or from the military.”

The problem, Lim believes, is that while Arroyo’s approval ratings are dismal, there are few legitimate opposition figures set to replace her. “I don’t even think the opposition want Arroyo to fall, not really,” he says, noting that most would prefer to wait for a legitimate transfer of power in coming elections scheduled for 2010. “If Arroyo went now, it would be very inconvenient for them. There is no obvious replacement for her.”

  32. Earlier, comrades and friends of the two soldiers were in the dark as to their fate. Some reports have it that they were held captive and tortured to deliver a scripted “confession” prepared by you-know-who.

  34. But I just saw Bibeth Orteza on TV. Together with Fr. Reyas, Guingona and his daughter, Argee Guevarra, and the other civilians being herded to Camp Crame. Ditto the Magdalo soldiers.

Most people don’t know it, but it is true what terracotta says. “…definitely will not like that their fellow soldiers will be subjected to police custody.” In almost all cases, they avoid touching each other. It is an insult to the military that their comrades are treated like common, petty criminals, retrained by nylon cable ties, and pants down to their knees.

Those who say this situation has reached its end are merely hoping for it. The chain of command has been broken. Fence-sitting generals are feeling their way through this and no one is vocal about commitment.

That never happens when there is absolute confidence in their superiors, behind a solid organization.

  35. Ellen,

Sorry to say this but I believe Lim and Trillanes were out of their mind to do something impromptu like this — of course, from afar there is a tendency to see their action as useless.

A kind of knee jerk reaction of this sort is bound to fail when fighting Gloria, especially when it’s the military doing it. The military is expected at the very least to compe up with a plan. Even Gloria’s coup d’état against Estrada took a year to develop. I’m not saying they should take a year but what can 20 soldiers do except to hold a press conference?

A failed move is bound to make Gloria more cautious and the military is more worse for it. Gen Lim disappoints me a bit.

  36. I agree with you AdB.

  37. Ana: Trillanes is not a strategist.

  38. “Technically that is not an arrest(i.e.,the mass arrest of the journalists). That is a processing,” Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno said.

  39. Hahahah! “That is a processing,” Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno said.”

  41. International press which is important too whether we like it or not in the scheme of things, i.e., to help build pressure against her, are instead “giving” Gloria thumbs up for quashing the would be rebels; 1 point less against the well meaning members of the military and 2 points for Gloria.

This doesn’t augur well for those who want to move in the near future to topple her for her sins.

  42. Ellen,

What happened to the two missing Magdalos? Media here has reported two casualties due to the one-sided firing done by Esperon’s no yagbols troop.

    Ingat!

  43. Over here, Anna, the opinion is one against the Dorobo and two for the rebels, because over here people do not have good opinion of military gunning their own people.

Bloggers here should counter it as a matter of fact.

    Patalsikin na, NOW na!

  44. Yuko,

Re: “Over here, Anna, the opinion is one against the Dorobo and two for the rebels, because over here people do not have good opinion of military gunning their own people.”

Maybe so, but the bottom line is that Gloria didn’t need any additional point at all anywhere on the globe.

Lim’s and Trillanes’ move defeated their purpose because of obvious lack of planning. Fighting Gloria entails a bit more of planning. They were lucky that Esperon didn’t have the balls either to shoot them down.

  45. In that sense, Esperon proved a bit more wily — had he shot and killed Lim and Trillanes, things might have been different as in widespread military rebellion.

    -Tongue in, anew.

Sinabi mo pa. I’ve been saying the same things in this blog and other pinoy egroups for a long, long time. From afar, one gets a real good view of the Philippines and the state it is presently in which lamentably is being used by despondent Filipinos as a great excuse for leaving, never to set foot on the Philippines again.

Para kang lumabas sa kobeta after getting used to the smell of shit there, and then going back only to realize how filthy and bad its smell is.

    Kawawang bansa!

  47. I’ve viewed most of the news clips at the Pen Hotel, please tell me where were the 70% of Manila public that repeatedly say they want this evil woman out – full of excuses blaming Gen.Lim & Sen.Trillanes when they were not supported when it mattered most – too late to do it today!

  48. Anna,
    This is what Razon says:

“The documents lays out the plan of the group on what they intend to do, who are the personalities who would do it. It states there that there are four groups involved in this activity,” he said.

He said the PNP is now going after four groups but whose personalities were identified only through codenames such as “Tirador,” “Regulasyon,” “Alabata,” “Jojit,” “Gambit” and “Sniper.”

Bonifacio Day rallies are ongoing in 3 sites and a march to Malacañang is planned later in the day.

If we were to believe the PNP, who have mastered “agriculture” skills in evidence gathering, there IS a plan.

  50. Ahh, but Tongue…indeed if we could only believe the PNP “who have mastered “agriculture” skills in evidence gathering,” then by all means, Sonny Razon might be right after all that there was a plan.

“The fact that media were asked to leave but refused cannot justify the arrest.”

In America, the press were told to leave the Waco compound (and moved to a safe distance to cover reporting) and they complied before the FBI made their siege. I don’t understand why the Filipino press insist on staying right in the middle of military operation and still expect to be accorded special treatment.

Even in normal police procedure, one can be arrested for obstruction (refusal to heed duly constituted authorities). The law only provides that a person cannot be jailed more than 3 days without proper charge. In fact, the Philippine authorities arrested everybody on actual scene and promptly released the press people after processing in less than 24 hours. There is hardly any press freedom issue when press can do whatever it wanted to do.

  53. My take is from a the perspective of a segment of the military, no matter how minute, doing something in order to OBTAIN THEIR OBJECTIVE, i.e., MILITARY RESULT!

As far as I’m concerned, this is a given: Gloria is a baddie who must not be underestimated.

  54. had he shot and killed Lim and Trillanes, things might have been different as in widespread military rebellion.

That was exactly what Lim and Trillanes were willing to take–die if necessary—but someone told them to think of others who may get in between, and they were forced to give up.

I actually translated the part where Trillanes and Lim were told to stop by one of their companions, but it was not included in the flash news because they were mere speculations and the news flash had to contain only those that were visible to the eye!

No need to follow any military rule here as a matter for as Senator Pimentel has stated, the acts of the military were unconstitutional!!!

Trillanes and Lim apparently were being practical in showing what it is like when there is no rule of law, and surely, they have succeeded in doing that.

Guevarra, in a phone interview, said aside from them Dr. Francisco Nemenzo, former University of the Philippines president, and columnist Herman Tui Laurel were also among those apprehended.

He decried police brutality as he claimed police officials, including Gen. Geary Barias, National Capital Region Police Office chief, hit Trillanes.

“Sen. Trillanes was manhandled last night. He was taken in. He was hit by a fist blow to his chest. He was elbowed,” Guevarra said.

  58. Quotes on The Peninsula Incident:

Erap : “I have high respects for Senator Trillanes, but I must denounce this recent episode that has once again tarnished the reputation of the Philippines.”

US Embassy : “The United States and the Philippines are long time democratic allies, and the US Embassy wishes to take this opportunity to reiterate our government’s support to the rule of law, constitutional order and the government of the Philippines”

Archbishop Rosales : “What all long to see is humble, honest, inspiring and compassionate leadership among public servants who are completely disposed to unity.”

Bishop Tobias: “I want the people to go with what is right. If you think that the two soldiers, General Lim and Senator Trillanes have done the right thing then support them.”

“Running Priest” Fr. Robert Reyes : “You can choose to watch and say that this is just one of those things or you can pray. But I will insist to ask people to act. If you want change then this is the time.”

Speaker De Venecia : “We must cleanse government and society and restore the nation from what our highly respected Church leaders have described as a state of moral bankruptcy.”

Senate President Villar : “I will call for a caucus to discuss [the legality] of the curfew.”

Sen. Pimentel : “The Gloria Macapagal Arroyo administration is using the methods of martial law without declaring it. Our freedoms are being subverted not by direct action but by subterfuge. Let us all remember that the price of liberty is vigilance!”

Donald Dee : “Trillanes took an oath to defend the Constitution but he is clearly out to destabilize the government … He has violated his office as a senator.”

Jose Almonte : “These things are unnecessary if only the government is doing its job. The soul of the nation is what at stake here. Ang kaluluwa ng bansa pagtulungan nang bansa na mabuo iyon.”

ABS-CBN reporter Noel Alamar : “Iyong reklamo iyong basta na lamang pinosasan, hindi man lang sinabi sa amin kung ano’ng charges. Di ba iyong usual naman sa police iyong you have the right to remain silent, iyong Miranda doctrine, wala iyon. Basta dinala kami sa isang holding area, iyong makalabas lamang ng lobby ng Peninsula tapos pinosasan na kami sinakay na kami sa bus.”

Sec. Puno : “Technically that is not an arrest. That is a processing”

Gen. Razon : “The documents lays out the plan of the group on what they intend to do, who are the personalities who would do it. It states there that there are four groups involved in this activity. The PNP is now going after four groups but whose personalities were identified only through codenames such as “Tirador,” “Regulasyon,” “Alabata,” “Jojit,” “Gambit” and “Sniper.” ”

Gen. Esperon : “We want to assure you that the chain of command of the Armed Forces is intact and all the movements that are happening are authorized … but we encourage everyone that whenever you see troops, please report to us.”

Gen. Danilo Lim : “Now is the time for the withdrawal of support. We are joining our people in the removal of an illegitimate President … Units are joining from Mindanao to northern Luzon.”

Sen. Trillanes : “It’s tantamount to treason if I don’t do anything. There is no loss here. We just did what had to be done. If there is a loser, it’s going to be the Filipino nation because … Gloria is still in power and she will be there even beyond 2010. Like all evil regimes, there is an end to it.”

Gloria Arroyo : “We have repeatedly proved to the world the stability of our democratic institutions and the strength of this government. Our strong Republic depends on a strong economy which the whole nation desires.”

  59. Yuko,

No need to fight with me because I’m one of those against Gloria.

Re your “That was exactly what Lim and Trillanes were willing to take–die if necessary—but someone told them to think of others who may get in between, and they were forced to give up.”

That’s precisely what I meant by seeming absence of planning.

Any military officer worth his salt would have taken this in highly in consideration even before making a move. I go by the result. Road to hell is paved with good intentions.

69. Ellen,

Here was my initial take based on the news I read even before I posted a comment here:

Contrary to what on line news have been reporting even those by The Times, The Independent or by the BBC, I don’t believe this military incident was an attempted coup d’état — it lacked the most important ingredient: planning. It may be a ‘coup’ alright which in French means “a move” but couldn’t be a military coup d’état.

The incident was, from all first-hand accounts, i.e., Ellen Tordesillas, other blogs and news items, was an impromptu “withdrawal of support”, a method for the nation’s aggrieved military elements to call for a press conference to denounce the corruption in Arroyo’s govt.

If you examine the events closely, there is no doubt in my mind that it cannot be equated to a coup d’état; apart from lack of planning, a couple of ingredients that would make it a coup d’etat are missing, i.e., takeover of important installations, eg., broadcast station, airport, or govt offices, as well as absence of potential designated ‘battle orbits.’

This incident was merely one of those non-violent “withdrawals of support,” quite unique to the Philippines which was started by Gen Angelo Reyes when he helped Gloria Arroyo topple ex-Pres Estrada and stamped with a legal imprimatur by ex-Chief Justice Hilario Davide (now enjoying a high profile social life in NY as Arroyo’s ambassador to the UN). Reyes, then chief of staff of the nation’s armed forces has since become one of the most important hig-power official in Arroyo’s government.

  70. Point is how can they plan their operation inside the jail?

Ngayon kakasuhan daw si Trillanes and strip him of his position as Senator without due process.

  71. Is it a coup, mutiny, putsch, situation, or what?

    • Coup d’état or simply coup: A sudden and decisive action in politics, especially one resulting in a change of government illegally or by force. The term is French and literally means “stroke concerning the state” (coup, hit, and état, state).

    • Putsch: A plotted revolt or attempt to overthrow a government especially one that depends upon suddenness and speed. The Swiss German word literally means violent blow, clash or shock. It was introduced in the sense of a “coup” to refer to Swiss popular uprisings in the 1830s, especially the Zurich revolt of September 1839.

    • Mutiny: Concerted disobedience or seditious action by persons in military or naval service, or by sailors on commercial vessels. Mutiny may range from a combined refusal to obey orders to active revolt or going over to the enemy on the part of two or more persons. In the Armed Forces it is considered one of the gravest crimes against military law.

    • Rebellion: Open, organized, and armed resistance to one’s government or ruler. In the most general sense, a refusal to accept authority and may include a range of action and behaviors from civil disobedience to a violent organized attempt to destroy established authority. Those who participate in rebellions are known as “rebels”

  72. DinaPinoy,

This is where your assessment is overtaken by your wild imagination: “trilanes planning: take civilians as hostages”

Taking someone or people hostage is accompanied by violence by the hostage taker but if we are to re-read first hand reports, not once nor was there ever an attempt by Trillanes to use violence on the civilians who were with him.

Let’s be a bit more circumspect. You are allowed to hate the man if that’s the way you feel but saying that his planning was to take civilians as hostages seems way out of line.

  73. “Technically that is not an arrest(i.e.,mass arrests and handcuffing of journalists covering the Trillanes story). That is a processing,” Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno said.

“Oh Mortal Man, is there nothing you cannot be made to believe?Josef Goebbel, Minister of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda

To me they it was a move to attract attention to the ever corrupt Gloria govt through the press. Nothing to do with coup d’état.

Lim and Trillanes should have known better about asspweron! Wasn’t asspweron the one who went gungho in chopping the heads of Lim and Querubin in the February 2006 supposedly aborted “coup”? Senga in his earlier pronouncements sent Lim home and Querubin as well. Meaning Senga did not think that the actions of Lim and Querubin were not worth issuing out a 1017 decree. Asspweron was quick in blocking all the routes of the supporters to their cause when there was a stand-off in Fort Bonifacio. How can their supporters, who may be mostly from the B and C class ever make it to the posh Makati hotel? Most of these people can only move if mobilized.

I do not personally think that the actions of Lim and Trillianes to surrender was defeatish. They took into account the lives of innocent people. I am also a believer that although there was tear gas and tanks and all the heavily armed soldiers, if the fight would have errupted, that there will be a lot of these uniformed men who will have to decide which side to go and at that point, Lim and Trillianes would certainly have a following from these uniformed men.
What did Lim and Trillianes lose anyway? They are both incarcerated with no hope of a fair trial anyway. In staging this Manila Pen incident, they reminded the people that we have to get rid of this regime. If it is a boxing match, this is just another round amongst many more rounds. They certainly have done more than their part, how about doing ours instead of blaming Trillianes and Lim for a failed movement. To me, they are our modern day heroes who stood up against the odds. These rebel soldiers may yet come back for another round. They are just recuperating from an almost knock out punch! The knock out punch to the tiyanak may not have come from this duo but it certainly woke up our senses that we have a tyrant sitting on the throne! Never mind if peoples’ lives are lost and properties are destroyed as long as these tyrants are in power. This was what they were prepared to do yesterday, to kill and destroy!

On the other hand why mount a coup attempt without any concrete plan and with just a handful of supporters. It just doesn’t make sense. This is not a “hit or miss” thing. If the reason behind the action is to test the patience and support of the public, then the people failed them again. People power is passe. And besides, people already learned their lessons from the past. Thereafter, those who position themselves on the seat of power do the same things as the present corrupt occupant all over again and they will be again left in the cold as always hungry, penniless and jobless. But to really mount a successful power grab, it will be all exclusive military operation and no civilian component, but with Assperon on the AFP helm a proven lapdog and ass licker, we really needed a miracle if not we are stuck with corrupt and bogus gloria until 2010 and beyond.

Gloria:Are these Acts of a Hero?

Credibility Gap: No previous president appears to have squandered the public’s trust more than Gloria has. After being installed as President after a popular “People Power” uprising in 2001, Gloria has gained a reputation for deviousness in her many political decisions. People consider her untrustworthy as evidenced by her plummeting public trust ratings.
Presidential Misconduct: The “Hello Garci” tapes clearly indicated her intervention in the election process to ensure her “victory” versus the popular FPJ. The recent bribery attempts of Governors and Congressmen demonstrate the brazen use of “cash power” in the highest corridors of power.
Abuse of Presidential Power: History may ultimately hold Gloria in the greatest contempt for expanding the powers of the presidency (like a Marcos’ cheap copycat). Her EO No.464 is a deliberate derogation of the legislative power to investigate. The extra-judicial killings remain unabated under her administration.

Litany of Scandals: Since the start of the GMA administration in January 2001, it has been one scandal after another…. the National Power Corp. (Napocor) -CPK-Kalayaan rehabilitation project , the race horse importation fiasco, the overpriced Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard exposé, misuse of the fertilizer funds, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. scandals, the jueteng scandals and many more. Many people who criticize Trillanes and Lim(whether pro- or anti-Arroyo) do so because they lost. These people are probably the same bunch who will praise them to high heavens if ever, as a result of their actions, they succeeded in taking over Malacanang. duren, there are two kinds of media in the philippine press. one is the paid media releasing only the byuti and pogi points of the bogus gloria and her cabal and the other is the likes of ellen who report the first hand news.

    which one you like?

  119. Magno:

Ellen all i can say is that Gen. Lim drove the final nail in his coffin. Maybe there’s a grand plan still to come, ewan. The event itself will be a catalyst to bring in the forces closer to the objective then boom! Right now everything is still fluid, ang mga opisyalis pwedeng mag-deny ng involvement tapos 11th hour consolidate. Mass action or protest will be the cover kaya ang AFP/PNP ay ganun na lang mag bantay na walang mag converge upang bumuo ng critical mass.Sabi nga ni Gringo noon the best way to be invisible is to be visible. Kaya the very same forces you call to insulate will be the same forces to deliver the blow. If I’m wrong and based on popular belief na spontaneous event lang ito out of the magdalo’s frustration sa sistema tapos nag snow ball effect capping the Pen press con, well itong si trillanes and company ay masisi ko. Tulad ng mga comments earlier, they are not tacticians much less of a strategist. They disappoint me and if that’s the way they plan an operation, naku between west point and pma grads, matapang pa yata ang cafgu doon sa field kapagka nag harass ang npa ay nakakalaban pa ng sabayan maski garand lang ang dala.Thanks.

  121. Mrivera:
    I share your opinion 100%.
People cannot expect a planned time and place the people concerned must be ready to take the initiative whenever it arises. Lets face the Truth, both Gen.Lim & Sen.Trillanes were let down by the so called 70% of Manila population who say they want this woman out. They missed their chance, so let them suffer further. But don’t blame these two brave men.
I heard a woman being interviewed on television say “It was overkill”, of course it was because it was a government in panic mode.

  122. Mrivera Mrivera

    wwnl,

right! it was an overkill. the way the blind, deaf and mute soldiers and police destroyed the hotel’s doors and shooting all around as evidenced by the scattered damaged furnishings inside and out.

Sina Querubin at Gen.Miranda?

He is a shame in history next to Honasan.

  130. piping dilat piping dilat

It is always easy to criticize the moves of Trillanes and Lim… in hindsight! The people gloating over the failed uprising(?) … had done so after the fact… that is the reason why they are now taunting the rest of the anti-establishment in this forum… hindi ganyan ang tono nila at the height of the incident… kasi hindi pa nila alam kung ano ang mangyayari… nagkaroon na lang ng lakas nang loob umalipusta kina Trillanes at Lim dahil nakalusot na naman si bulilit…

Of course, you would expect the US to declare support for the current administration ( at 5pm… again after the fact )… what do these stupid people expect the US to say? … remember that most of the information on corruptions of the GMA administration discreetly came from the US … that’s how much the US supports GMA…

Also, it will be good for these people to look back in history on what happened to “collaborators” right after the battle is won…

i am sure that they simply think that yesterday incident is the last attempt to change the regime…

but then again, if one has nothing else to lose and everything to gain, why not dare ?

    MULA SA ISANG NEWS ITEM:

Coup leaders allowed guests at the hotel to leave after initially denying them the chance to go. The group of about 30 soldiers and their supporters barricaded themselves in a second-floor conference room from where they broadcast live their demands on national television. Arroyo appeared on television shortly afterwards to assure people she was in control and commanded the army’s loyalty.

  133. “Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago Friday filed an urgent resolution asking punitive action against Trillanes for leading the power grab Thursday at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati.”GMA NEWS

For once,I agree with Lady Miriam.Senator Trillanes is not above the law!

BUT,may I ask Senator Miria DefensorSantiago ,How about GLORIA?

“No man (or woman) is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man’s permission when we ask him to obey it. Theodore Roosevelt”

How could so many scandals of an elected(?) president and her cadre remain unexplained, unchallenged, and unpunished? When? Probably never.

We’re not talking mistakes, here. We’re not talking poor judgment or failed policies. We’re not talking politics as usual, with its underhanded array of pork and perks. But we are talking about very serious violations of the public trust, and very possibly the law, perpetrated by the elected(?) leader of this nation and her handlers.

Even more amazingly, we are talking about the shameful reality that not a single one of these offenses has been investigated by a truly independent, non-political, neutral commission, armed with subpoena powers and adequate funding, and answerable ONLY to the people of Philippines. Not a single one.

What ever happened to the investigation of:

    * The National Power Corp. (Napocor) -CPK-Kalayaan rehabilitation project.

    * The race horse importation fiasco.

    * The overpriced Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard exposé.

    * Misuse of the fertilizer funds,

    * The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. scandals.

    * The jueteng scandals.

    * the ZTE-NBN scandal(“Buck off!”).

    * The Bribery of Governors and Congressmen in Malacanang.

    * The MOTHER of ALL SCANDALS :THE HELLO GARCI Mega Scandal that influenced the last Presidential elections.

    * The Extra-Judicial Killings of Activists as reported by the United Nations special raporteur on human rights.

    * And many more…

What’s left to be said? Not very much. Gloria Pidal has had a free pass to do as she pleased since 2001.She and her political operators have not been held accountable for any crime against the people of this country. Gloria is above the law. Why?

  134. norpil norpil

politics is really not easy.trillanes and lim called for a withdrawal of support, what they got in this blog is withdrawal of support for them from some.i hope that those who withdrew suppport for trillanes and company will not give support to gma or that they actually are supporters within their hearts.for me no amount of mistake from gma’s opposition will be enough for gma to gain my support no matter how small that may be compare to others.things that happen in pinas for better or for worse is the leader’s responsibility.that trillanes and lim gambled is understandable considering the situation they are in.being voted in office and not allowed to do the duties associated with the position is enough to disorient the best of people.

Gloria and her cabals are instruments of the devil kaya dapat na mas mabangis din ang pagtutunggali. It should really be an armed rebellion headed by the true soldiers of the Filipino people. And they should not siege a hotel…but MALACAñANG!!! That is my opinion.

PNP vs. AFP forces! Ang the AFP military does not agree that the PNP mishandle their comrades just like that. The Good Forces, of course!

If she calls out the military after declaring martial law, sino ang mag-re-responde? Ang marines? Parang niregaluhan niya si General Miranda and Colonel Querubin. Are we sure the marines will not spring out their leaders?

If she calls out the shock troops – the Scout Rangers, are we sure the rangers will not spring out Danny Lim?

So what will you have? Martial rule enforced by the PNP? Kaya ba ng PNP ang mga kawal? Ano ang combat experience ng PNP? Mang-gulpi ng squatter sa demolition?

So think before you gloat. Were they trying to force her hand?

  147. Apparently, I am right. Indirectly, Bosworth is short of criticizing the unano. Even he now says Filipinos should solve their domestic problems among themselves. I just watched him being interviewed on BBC. America has too much problems of its own to be bothered with other problems right now that do not at all have any bearing on them.

In short, makikialam lang ang mga kanuto if their interests in the Philippines will be adversely affected. Otherwise, no dice. Kaya iyong ungas, trying hard to elevate Philippine problems as something that Americans likewise should worry about.

The news stories then said naka-chinelas nga lang si Biazon and white socks, when he directed operations against Gringo in Camp Aguinaldo.

Kung magputukan man, can Esperon do a Biazon?

  151. …may follow up rallies….

  152. “Dissent without action is consent,” Lim told the nation. He could be right, but even if we were to take him at his word, we still need to ask: Is “action” necessarily defined in terms of violence? That way lies mass suicide. – PDI, EDITORIAL “Suicide,” 30 Nov. 2007

Well, I sure would like to see a list of instances wherein gang-rapists have been stopped on their rampaging tracks with “a civilized dialogue?”

I am not that old to know first-hand about the Japanese occupation in WWII, but how big the difference is there really between the Japanese Imperial forces invading the Philippines, and Mrs. Gloria Arroyo crawling up to Malacanang under the voice of “Garci” and by the guns under the belt of Mr. Hermogenes “Espie” Esperon?

Mrs. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo buttressed by the mercenaries under Mr. Esperon and of course the brown-bags happy-gangs, thanks to the overflowing ZTE and NBN deal of the century, have exhibited beyond doubt that any action taken against her – rallies, editorials, blogs, impeachment attempts, very inept coup attempts – will not budge. Are we then to accept that the alternatives left for us are: “‘mass surrender” of everything we believe to be right and true, let Mrs. Arroyo and Mr. Jose Pidal do their worst, this time, with Erap Estrada in his new supporting role? Or, do something together so disgruntled soldiers and discarded vice presidents need not encourage us to commit “mass suicide?” Like, go on massive migration so GMA and her generals would look like jerks, kakalog kalog in a country that more than 75% of the people have kakalog-kalog na sikmura and those who are not starving, eh kakalog-kalog naman ang utak at magapok na paninindigan?

“Peacefully” survive without a shred of dignity? Or…?

Digressing – am not even a good chess player, but I believe sacrificing a rook or a night so the troops can move freely to surround the “tiny queen” is as good as any move for a checkmate?

  153. Iyong mga reklamador na wala namang ginagawa even in their own realms, puede ba tumahimik na lang? OK, hindi sila nagtagumpay na matanggal si Pandak ngayon, but admit it, may nangyari—the die was cast!!!

Diyan siya babanatan ng US no doubt.

  154. Schumey has a good analysis of the standoff in his blog http://www.schumey.blogspot.com/ and I think he is right. Indeed, the Lim-Trillanes venture could be a trial balloon test.

In the same vein, I believe the curfew in Manila is also a trial baloon test for the Arroyo govt.

Each side is testing the other and see how far they could go.

Esperon of course has the upper hand here — he’s got Gloria by his side and the materiel.

Filipinos all over the world should lambast the govt for imposing curfew in Manila even if only to build pressure against the bogus president and to keep prancing Esperon on his tiny lil toes.

Most police videos abroad will show a suspect pinned down on the ground with 2 or 3 police officers on top of the suspect. It is not even called police brutality.

Fist blow and elbow equals brutality? That is an exaggeration.

  162. d0d0ng d0d0ng

“We need more people of the likes of Trillanes and Danny Lim to save our beloved country!”

On the contrary, the country needs a leader who can respect the constitution and avoid extrajudicial means of removing a president. There is 2010 presidential election which is not that far. The masses are fed up with removing the president by force even if that president has tainted the 2004 election. The silent majority didn’t want military solution anymore. The military always get what they wanted in the process.

  163. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I feel for Trillanes and Lim and the rest. The crowd they expected didn’t or couln’t come. I saw it in both their faces. The look of sadness, of having been somehow left alone to fight what should have been the people’s fight.

Sure, maybe there was a lack of more refined planning and preparation and coordination. But what they accomplished was to further project to the whole country and the world the many humongous crimes of this administration. Even if only for that, they deserve our gratitude.

This is not the end. The problem festers.

  164. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Who was that police official who was pulling Senator Trillanes by the front of his pants while moving towards the bus? Trillanes was already cuffed behind and with two men already holding his arms back. Why did that police official still have to drag Trillanes by his belt towards the bus? Like it was intended to humiliate the senator… make him look like a common criminal.

That scene was hard to take. It won’t sit well with the 11 million who voted for him. And that includes his supporters inside the military.

    11/30/07

The Filipinos, can talk, lament, cry from what happened in Makati, but if the people do not have the means to fight back Gloria Arroyo and Assperson with the same bullets, armored tanks, holicopter plane, it will always be a one sided scenario in the theatre. Who is going to fight for the oppressed Pinoys? Ramos, Enrile, Mariam Defensor Santiago? They are mostly after their pockets. To protect Gloria after all her misgivings is criminal itself. Maybe, for those people who live abroad should approach their Congressmen relentlessly to stop this insane Gloria otherwise no more armored tanks and helicopter from the U.S.

  166. d0d0ng d0d0ng

“police official still have to drag Trillanes by his belt towards the bus? Like it was intended to humiliate the senator… make him look like a common criminal.”

Trillanes sworn as senator under oath to follow the constitution. And yet he violated the constitution by advocating removal of president by extrajudicial means. He betrayed the vote of the people who elected him into office to abide by the constitution. A thief under common law is common criminal. A senator who violated the highest law of the land is treason.

Dandaw said, “The Filipinos, can talk, lament, cry from what happened in Makati, but if the people do not have the means to fight back Gloria Arroyo and Assperson with the same bullets, armored tanks, holicopter plane, it will always be a one sided scenario in the theatre. Who is going to fight for the oppressed Pinoys? Ramos, Enrile, Mariam Defensor Santiago?”

The constitution is very clear as to the answer. We, the people is the answer. On 2010, we have the right to choose the next president and certainly it will not be Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. That being the case, the people have to vote wisely and concentrate on the right candidate so corrupt presidents are not repeated again and again.

  168. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

Many times, we fool ourselves believing in the sanctity of instruments (e.g., consitution, laws) and institutions (judiciary, police). But our leaders can always break these with impunity. Voting leaders in (or out) may be an answer, but definitely it’s NOT a guarantee.

Take Gloria’s (bogus) presidency as a test case. I don’t think she got the people’s votes, or mandate. In 2010, my vote may be wasted again if she or another cheat does a “Hello Garci.” I’d rather take Gloria out now than wait for 3 years to exercise my power to vote.

  169. d0d0ng d0d0ng

“Voting leaders in (or out) may be an answer, but definitely it’s NOT a guarantee. ”

That is correct. The guarantee is the active constituents that put the congressmen who can (1) change the law or rules, (2) impeach the president, (3) alter the form of government, (4) approve the budget, or (5) change any of its institution (judiciary). The constituents can, at any time recall their congressmen (conniving with the Palace) as provided in the local government code. The base of Arroyo’s power now is congress which can kill any impeachment. A strong congress (not bought by pork barrel) is the badly needed insurance against a corrupt president.

hawaiianguy on, “Take Gloria’s (bogus) presidency as a test case. I don’t think she got the people’s votes, or mandate”

  171. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

Against the comelec, absolutely yes. The SC is slowly eroding, that began during Davide’s time. Hope it can still recover and stand against Gloria’s bogus regime. For the international governments, I don’t care if they recognize Gloria or not. They have their own business.

It is more than just a business, HG. As what a Japanese parliamentarian told us when we approached her to recommend to the Japanese government to stop recognizing the present Philippine government and stop aids to the Philippines, recognizing or not recognizing the Philippine government in fact depends on the Filipino people. Japan will stop recognizing the GMA government if the Filipinos themselves are able to prove without any doubt that it is illegal/illegitimate.

Meanwhile, all they can do is try to sanction an embargo if the present dispensation proves to be corrupt and cannot be trusted with such funds as the ODA, especially if Filipinos can prove that they are being used to oppress and even kill Filipino dissidents.

    Logical? You bet, it is.

Trillanes and Lim’s actions is going to be classified as treason since it didn’t succeed…had it succeeded , it will be called a revolution; they wil be heroes and GMA and her cohorts wil be villains! But since, as of this time, GMA is still at helm, expect Trillanes and Lim to be painted as villians… being pelted by insults and ridicules by GMA’s well entrenched political and military allies…

In the same manner, GMA’s action behind Erap’s back before 2001 is technically treason but since they succeeded in toppling Erap, then it is not treason anymore…

That is the reality… The world is not fair to everyone… The only thing certain will always be existence of victors and vanguished. News and, later on, history will always be written in the point of view of the victors…

However, there will people who will believe that it is far better dying standing up than living kneeling down and the venue for a peaceful transition is no longer there…

  186. Treason? Bakit legal ba si Gloria? The two men did not betray their country and people. In fact, they did what they did was right for country and people. Sedition, baka pa! But then, after the idiot is gone, then, they can have the chance to redeem their name.

The reality is Gloria is still there enjoying robbing and thieving from the Filipinos. Now, it is up to them to boot her out. Filipinos do not have to be saddled with this crook and her minions!

Yup, I know. As they say, “To the victor belongs the spoils,”but the truth is there is no victory gained yet, even by either side.

But let us not be sidetracked by publicity by the corrupt administration now calling Trillanes and Lim as terrorists. To 11M Filipinos, at least, Trillanes is a hero.

Still, the case is not treason, but more seditious in nature if it can be proven that they were armed and fought hard with the sangganos of the PNP/AFP. Lumalabas lang silang ulol!

I’m actually not impressed, for over here, we have a better way of apprehending criminals. The more elitist Japanese police in fact did not do the same barbaric acts that we witnessed on TV when the military backed police forced a humvee inside Peninsula Hotel or riddling the hotel with gunshots to frighten even those outside of the hotel when they apprehended the members of Aum, the terrorist organization responsible for instance for the Sarin attack at the Tokyo Metro over ten years ago. Sabi nga, dito may finesse.

For me, what is more realistic is that Gloria Dorobo is a criminal! It should be inculcated in every decent Filipino’s mind.

Here’s a good quote, “In war, whichever side may call itself the victor, there are no winners, but all are losers.”… Neville Chamberlain.

Ditto here. They have never betrayed the Filipinos as a matter of fact. They did not surrender, just capitulated, because as Sonny has stated, he would not like the death of innocent collateral damages in his conscience. For me, iyan ang marangal.

I can understand the sentiments of Senator Trillanes. I have experienced it a lot of times with Filipinos. Buti nga siya matiyaga, ako walang pasensiya. Mission accomplished kahit papaano.

That is accomplishment enough, I think.

Mabuhay kayo Senator Trillanes, General Lim, et al! Konting tiis lang. Basta ba huwag kayong patayin. Siguro naman walang maniniwalang kaya kayo binaril dahil tatakas kayo kung sakali by what you did, going with the crooks peacefully back to your cells.

Dapat bantayan ng mga lawyers’ association kung binugbog sila between Thursday and the days to come. Police brutality in fact can be grounds for dismissal of cases….over here in fact. Ewan ko sa Pilipinas!

  206. piping dilat piping dilat

    HI Yuko,

My point in giving out those examples is that the very same actions like blowing up a hotel, suicide bombings, etc… can always be looked upon from either side…

Also it is the gov’t that classifies the actions of Trillanes et. al. as treason… since as far as they are concerned, this administration is “legitimate” . They control the media ( at least most of it )… control the military ( ? ) , police and judiciary… so Trillanes et al are the villains… but for the rest of us… they definitely are not the villains… that is just what I am saying…

  207. piping dilat piping dilat

    Mrivera,

There are two kinds of people that are criticizing Trillanes et al… One of that is the group that is really embraced GMA’s words and deeds as the salvation of the nation and gloats at what happened in Manila Pen… the other group is composed of anti-GMA who simply are frustrated that she was not ousted by that move… so their criticism is more of a result of demoralization on their part more than anything else…

Both groups probably believed that the Manila Pen incident is the end of it all… and their reactions are understandable…

  208. Mrivera Mrivera

    piping dilat,

  209. boxy boxy

maam ellen, its good you are safe now.praise God there’s no bloodshed during the standoff.

  211. …kaya lang iba sa concept ko…

Point ay bakit washing off hands pa iyong iba?

Susmaryosep!

It isn’t just a matter of admiration, PD. It is more because I know what is good in this country where as a Japanese nationalI am part of its so-called “homogenous society” even when in fact there are a lot many of us here with foreign blood, too.

Having been born and reared in the Philippines, I can fairly say I know both countries, and I write what is good in Japan kasi baka naman may mapulot ang mga pinoy.

Problem is that some people are just simply being deliberately malicious and intend to mar the discussion here, for there is actually nothing wrong with having varied and conflicting opinions for let’s face it, no two persons can really be alike. Even twins have their differences as a matter of fact.

But I like “arguing” with you. Ipagpatuloy mo. I like being intellectually stirred, sabi nga. Hindi ako nababaduy!

BTW, those who were affected by the Sarin are now getting compensation from the government. Still, I prefer to be free of it. May side effect and one of my friends, who was on the train, has this chronic manifestation of it. Iyong perang tinatanggap niya, nagagamit niya sa pagpapagamot kasi hindi pa naman recognized iyong isang petition yata nila for the Health Ministry to provide free medication for their ailment.

At least, over here, you know the government will not dare cheat you!

Ganoon din naman sa Europe as a matter of fact.

I’m still researching on my roots. Inggit nga ako sa Mister ko kasi iyong family niya may genealogical record dating back to 752 A. D.

Meron good compilation sa Utah that our church obtained during the Marcos regime on a joint project with the National Archives/Library.

  221. Noong ngang kini-question ang nationality ni FPJ, PD, I suggested that they contact the LDS record depository in Utah because I knew about records dating back to the 18th century kept at the National Archives were microfilmed by the LDS Church. Yuck!
