Just a few lines on the Peninsula takeover.

I do not know if this was a planned action on the part of Trillanes and company. If it was, it was poorly executed. From the way I saw things on television, it looked more like a spur-of-the-moment move, hoping to generate support from sympathizers and other sectors of society. This did not materialize.

But I can understand the frustrations of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and his fellow Magdalo officers. Their case has dragged on for more than four years with no end in sight. The saying goes that “justice delayed is justice denied.” So much for the rule of law.

Let me try to put things in their proper perspective. What Trillanes did may have been wrong but sometimes it is necessary to create situations that focus attention on continuing cases of grave injustice and a growing culture of impunity.

Trillanes was elected senator by a large number of our people. He was not allowed to take his place in the Senate. In securing victory, he did not engage in dagdag-bawas operations. He did not engage in massive vote-buying, using taxpayer money. He did not communicate with election officials on how he was doing at the polls. He did not have movie stars and assorted entertainers working on his behalf. He was under detention in Fort Bonifacio during the campaign period.

How many of our “elected” officials can claim victory under similar conditions?

One last word. The picture of handcuffed media personnel being “invited” to Bicutan reminded me of American troops rounding up suspected Iraqi insurgents. Those news clips flashed around the world to millions of viewers courtesy of CNN and BBC caused more damage to the image of our country than anything Trillanes did.

    That’s a combat proven general speaking…

One biased opinion from a military? Ummmm!

  3. TurningPoint TurningPoint

Opinions vary and thanks to Gen. Farolan and Neal Cruz. They wrote and said it all on the Manila Pen’s incident what we wanted to say but we don’t the facility for words.

  4. Rose,

I don’t think Gen Farolan was being biased for or against Trillanes. He was merely making an observation.

Matter of fact, f you read his entire article, he is “lauding” Trillanes — he is almost approving what Trillanes did as when he said, “What Trillanes did may have been wrong but sometimes it is necessary to create situations that focus attention on continuing cases of grave injustice and a growing culture of impunity.”

LtGeneral Ramon Farolan, CG PAF (ret), is considered one true officer and gentleman in the military. He is level-headed and more importantly he has a great reputation for being fair.

  5. Aside from the usual sarcasm from glueria’s mouthpieces, the United Opposition, too, disapproved what Sen. Trillanes did as if they have better agenda than what Lim/Trillanes/ KME / civil society/ “United Forces” have offered.

The KME economic proposals are doable and just the thing we need today. But these agenda is incompatible with UNO objectives which is just the “changing of the guards” trapo-type.

One of the good things that came out from the standoff is we know now more than ever that we really can’t trust our aspirations for a better country thru these traditional politicians [Binay, Estrada, Villar, etc except Nene Pimentel]. They are aiming for 2010, because they [trapos] are the only group who can afford elections. But we don’t.

The Senate’s move to investigate the incident in favor of the media is just one way of “pabango” effect, knowing media is the most effective marketing tool for their ambitions.

    We know better.

Let’s throw our support then to KME and other civil society groups behind the Lim/Trillanes tandem that truly has the most feasible solutions to the problems at hand.

AdB: I don’t think so too. As a matter I am glad that somebody of his ranks did “laud” Trillanes..because evidence or no evidence Sen Trillanes and Gen. Lim and together with all the other detained soldiers (still many with no charges) must really be at the highest heights of frustration..I honestly pray that more of Gen. Farolan’s
comrades stand up and be counted…it is never too late! May Gen. Farolan’s tribe increase! There was line I can’t seem to remember fully but it goes like this: “Abu bin Ladin may your tribe increase..awoke one night from a deep dream in sleep”. I think this was from “Alibaba and the Forty Thieves.”

    Rose,

Speaking of Alibaba and the Forty Thieves, goria is in Europe sojourn with 40 congressmen. As somebody wrote in another blog:

Forty administration solons will join President Arroyo in her trip to Europe this weekend. And why not? They’ve been given the pocket money last October; time now to go shopping.

I thought so, too. The idiots thought they could frigthen the journalists by handcuffing them with plastics used for tying cables of computers, etc. and stop them from covering and reporting on the trials of the Magdalo and the group of Gen. Lim and Col. Querubin.

What’s “pique-assiette”? Pardon me for my ignorance.

  17. It means “freeloader,” HG. Isang masamang ugali common to these people.

It reminds me of similar group of Philippine Senators and Congressmen who were invited to Japan to discuss the problem of illegal Filipino migrant workers in 1989 when the started to be a social, economic, etc. problems for the Japanese. Libre lahat, pati siguro sanitary napkin noon mga female solons, but what was really nauseating was that they even took along their spouses, children and domestic helpers and charge the Japanese government for their airfare, board and lodging, tours and even perhaps their shopping sprees. Ganoon kakapal!

Former President Ramos is still silent; but his right hand man Gen. Almonte has made a comment as if to support Trillanes and his group. But to some credible observers, ang isang malaking dahilan ay wala man isang taga opposition na pulitiko ang nanguna o sumama. Where are the Dioknos and Tanadas? Folks, pardon for the multiple postings. I would like to add Bishop Cruz’s take on the Makati standoff (ovc.blogspot.com). Most central is the morally bankrupt govt of Gloria.

He says: “The fundamental factors that caused the riveting drama remain the same. The perceived morally bankrupt and callous government continues to be in power. The same markedly questionable individuals with busted values system remain holding the high critical public offices.”

  25. rebelfiancee rebelfiancee

This officer and gentleman, Gen. Farolan, said it well.. But i doubt those evidences “gathered” by the police.. A wise man will not leave any trace in the hotel if it is planned. Those documents that the police had found in the MAKATI PEN, may not be credible.. maybe manufactured. As i see it Sen. Trillanes,Et all didnt have any plan for the said stand off.. it happened because of necessity.. that they cannot bear anymore the injustice, the sufferings of many FILIPINOS..the sufferings that you really want to serve your countrymen but has been prevented by the greed of power of MRS. ARROYO. The government had breached the agreement that they will resolved all the greivances aired last JULY 27,2003. The government has done nothing to prevent the casualties of government troops. Until now, no justice for those who had been killed and beheaded last July 10,2007 in Sulu. Come to think of it, do MRS. ARROYO deserves to seat until 2010. Does she deserve the respect and honor.. a big NO!

    Sampot,

I think it is unfair to blame the entire opposition for not acting during the incident… it does seem that they were not informed beforehand about the walkout… nobody knows exactly what had happened… why Trillanes and Lim did it w/o coordinating with the other groups… was it a trial balloon? … are they hoping that the troops will defect immediately ? … did they not expect the gov’t troops/police to cordon off the area to prevent gathering of the civilians/troops?… why do such a thing with only a handful of rifles/guns? … is Manila Pen defensible in a siege, that’s why they chose the place? …do they suspect that the opposition is infiltrated by GMA’s agents?…

I will not point an accusing finger at anyone, as of this time… We don’t know the real story yet… and I still believe that Trillanes and Lim are intelligent people… and they have done this thing for a reason, bearing in mind, the consequences if this does not succeed…

Bottom line, don’t expect any public figure to say that they support what Trillanes did and get away with it… For the same reason, do not expect any field commanders of the AFP, to express support for Trillanes now… to do so will invite more trouble for them… it is always better to be silent and let the AFP high command do the worrying on who’s with them and who’s against them…

  27. At least, Chi, humihirit si Escudero for Trillanes di tulad ni Cayetano although the sister volunteered to be custodian of one of those now being readied with a rebellion suit, si Guingona ba o si Nemenzo? Iyan ang talagang nakaka-piss off!

  28. Rose,

Both Diokno and Tanada are dead. Diokno died in 1987 and Tanada in 1992. I like Tanada better. The son, Wigberto, is an LP Congressman from Quezon province

Papadalhan ko ng Christmas card from the US this Christmas.

Lets put it this way. If you couldnt breach the wall, it may be too high and so strong and rightly placed. Yet its easy to get to the other side, just enter its gate. Its wide open. 33. Rose,

Invoking privacy pa ang mokong na walang magawa si Lacson et al na sabihan he does not have the same privilege granted to a sitting president dahil civilian siya!!! Kasi hindi siyang umubrang maging special envoy for the OFWs. Biglang hirit ng mga OFWs in fact nang i-announce ni Piglet na ginagawa niyang special envoy for the OFWs without prior consultation with the Senate and/or Congress of the Philippines. Akala mo talagang sila na ang may-ari ng Pilipinas when in principle, the Piglet is supposed to be a mere public servant!

Problem is bakit hindi humihirit ang majority ng citizenry ng Pilipinas against these abuses? Ano iyan? Hanggang Yuck na lang ba tayo?

  34. All is said against senator trillanes and general lim. pero Hindi natatandaan ng media kung ano ang the end/outcome ng “The Last Castle”. Capt Faeldon is missing/escaped, I am afraid and still praying for his safety dahil wala siyang “Mistah” dahil hindi naman siya PEMAYER.

General Farolan’s views are correct– the Filipinos are AMNESIACS with regards to History, just remember who killed Gat Andres Bonifacio and his brother?, also anybody here who remember who killed the greatest Filipino General of the Revolution General Antonio Luna?!!!!!

  39. So what kung hindi PMAer ang sundalo? Mas matatapang pa nga ang hindi. I heard in fact that those brave soldiers who formed some fearless rangers in WWII were no PMAers but UP ROTC reservists.

  40. Just a reminder. I found this in Ellen’s archives. This probably will help those in a limbo now as to why the Thursday stand-off happened:

    Why spring?

For more than two years, I have kept my silence, hoping I was wrong about the Arroyo government. Instead, the events have proven me right – she is corrupt and ruthless, and she will do anything to stay in power.

I leave now to join the fight for a credible government, though I will not benefit from this. The government and the military have tried to break me and my group for more than two years, linking us to the opposition and accusing us of accepting money to oust Arroyo. Arroyo and her cohorts have tried to break everyone who disagrees with them, and I am sure they will continue to do everything they can to break me.

This early I swear: I will not accept any position in government, either in this one or the next. There is no reward for me in this fight except the knowledge that should I die, I die in peace, for I am fighting for our people and our country.

    CAPT NICANOR E FAELDON

In fact, what Faeldon said in 2005 was what Trillanes was saying likewise last Thursday kaya sinong gago ang may sabing nagpapapogi lang sila? Ulol!

I am in search of the TRUE FILIPINO, whose intelligence and character capture the whole essence of what makes the Philippines No. 1 in many fields of greatness. EUREKA, I found it. This piece below is a must read for all decent and law-loving people. With a Filipino mental frame like hers, even God’s mercy can’t give any hope for the bad Pinoys. Why does God need the law to save and rule mankind? Read on, it’s on the last part.

The laws Trillanes et al violated , Kat’s Eye by katrina Legarda. Check out ABS-CBN online.

  47. Katrine Legarda’s piece is perhaps good in a court room but in a forum where public opinion is visibly divided, it smacks of hystrionics.

Here is what I posted in the other thread:

The crime of rebellion requires rising publicly AND taking arms against the government.

Who had the arms? The guards of Trillanes. Esperon says the guards did not join Trillanes. Sinisiguro lang daw na hindi makatakas. So the act of the guards cannot be imputed on Trillanes; they did not have a conspiracy. There was, therefore, no taking of arms on the part of Trillanes.

    Mukhang kulang sa elements.

Maybe kaya kailangan ng raw footage from ABS-CBN, dahil walang ebidensya. Baka naghahanap ng sandali, where Trillanes held a 45 or something.

This is going to be a good fight. I know Theodore Te. Mahusay yan.

I suspected that some Civil Society groups who conspired with GMA were the one who tipped off the gov’t about the walked out planned of Sen. Trillanes and Gen. Lim and co.

Kasi nga they are against sa pardon ni Pres. Erap, so in reality pakawala yan ni GMA yan just to intimidate the people especially those who wants changes in our society.

The present gov’t is the real enemy of our people, and the only solution wala ng iba, we need to kick ALL them out from the gov’t and replace them by new promising leaders like Sen. Trillanes, Gen. Lim and ALL loving New Katipuneros.

Well it’s sad to say what would happened from the past and at present, the same issues but different situations, our Kababayan killed Rizal and Bonifacio; mga MAKAPILI sumbong Pinoy sa Hapon; Abscom police killed Ninoy Aquino; Civil Society, Church leaders & Military conspired each other against Pres. Erap; and lastly, a million questions, “SINO ANG NAGKANULO SA GRUPO NI SEN. TRILLANES/GEN. LIM during PEN siege.

Indeed, Civil Society is now split into two or three. Some are on the opposition side and then the other are with GMA. Not only the Civil Society has this problem; even the opposition groups, the church, the CBCP. These days, it’s very hard to know who are who and which side one is. Sa pula, sa puti.

    piping dilat Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    Jay Cynikho,

And what is your take on GMA’s mockery of the rule of law?

This is what I wrote that made Piping D asked the question:
I am in search of the TRUE FILIPINO, whose intelligence and character capture the whole essence of what makes the Philippines No. 1 in many fields of greatness (corruption, immorality, poverty, etc.) EUREKA, I found it. This piece (of Katrina) is a must read for all decent and law-loving people. With a Filipino mental frame like hers, even God’s mercy (after 7 years of fervent praying) can’t give any hope for the bad Pinoys. Why does God need the law to save and rule mankind? Read on, it’s on the last part.

I am impressed with her piece. Here’s the answer to the question raised above: A stand up comic provided it. There are so many common criminals like Trillanes who walk the earth and who makes life a sacrifice to law-abiding ( elite) people like K Legarda. But God couldn’t be blamed for deeds of common criminals, so God invented Satan, and Satan being an ex angel, wouldn’t want a monopoly of the blame so Satan invented the lawyers.

“What’s happening to us? We have no more decency?” A wife asked her husband when walking in a cemetery she read the epitaph in a tomb: Here lies a lawyer and an honest man. The wife shaking her head whispered, “They buried two men in that grave.”

On Piping Dilat question of Gloria’s mockery of the rule of law, I say what rule of law? We never had one. Only the code of Kalantiyaw was real. The (deceitful) rule of law was invented by lawyers who were invented by Satan (see comment above). Gloria was invented by generations (that includes Dadong and Mike) of lawyers. Piping D, if you connect thousands of dots you will end up to begin with God like God invented Satan who invented lawyers like Katrina who invented despots like Gloria. Our case is like the Philippines against God and Satan if our country is to do right by its people. We have to fight against our Christianity and our evil selves to free our souls from the fires of hell. I asked Ellen to tell me which country had been saved by faith and prayers. Hello? Even St. Joan of Arch had to go to war and got burned at the stake.

Good Lawyers like Rene’ should not get hurt by my words. So are the good politicians, and good policemen. In the Philippines good lawyers ARE NOT lawyers. Good policemen ARE NOT policemen. They might all be working or had retired overseas. There are no, NADA good politicians. It’s like what American soldiers said in Sulu: A good moro is a dead moro! Who is the lawyer, who is the policeman, who is the politician who wants to be dead? Better BAD than dead. They have families we know and understand. Are there really no good ones? Ask their bosses, better still, ask any sidewalk vendor. If you don’t believe the answer because you are a math wizard, 99.95% can not be 100%, no one can really help us.

  58. piping dilat piping dilat

Ahh… you lost me there… i was just asking a simple question then… let me paraphrase it once more… you consider Trillanes a criminal ( for violating the law, right?), what about GMA if she violates the law? I assume that you agree that all criminals must spend time in jail, right?

  61. jay cynikho jay cynikho

    Piping Dilat
Sori, I was in the depths of my thoughts, but willingly I will come to the shallows to affirm that Trillanes is not a criminal; he is a patriot and a hero in contemporary times. Gloria M Arroyo (GMA) is a criminal, not an ordinary criminal in contemporary times, but in all times past, present, future. She was called more than 50 dirty names (I compiled them), tiyanak, bansot, etc in the shallows of our mind but she was never called for what she really is: a tyrant, an evil master whose thoughts and acts caused the murder of many people, the thievery of billions of pesos, intentional poverty of the poor, the disgrace of the Filipino in the eyes of the world, ad infinitum.
Because there are more of the likes of Trillanes in world history, Trillanes becomes a common hero, a common patriot. Because there are fewer tyrants in world history, Gloria is an uncommon criminal whose crime of tyranny is never found in the law books of Katrina Legarda.
You asked Piping, “I assume that you agree that all criminals must spend time in jail, right?” Yes of course, but the law can be bent, and lawyers will say no, not in all cases. Yes is the simplistic answer to a simplistic question. In Philippine jurisprudence where there is anarchy (anything goes) of legal doctrines money makes right and renders finality to questions.

Sori to you too. I remember Vic Paz’s radio program. I did not throw a bato-bato sa langit. I also did not believe in the saying or paninawala about the dead and the good moro. I just used it for effect. Why should I believe it when I had a Tausog for a roommate for two years in College? I have raised a lot of points here that’s never answered objectively, except perhaps by AP Macasaet in Abante (online) on his thoughts about Makati’s Bastille (in the reverse). I wish I could write like AP Macasaet. He answered many of my WHYs?

Sori ellen please teach me how to link so I won’t cut and paste again.
May be this one has already been posted here, but like many of your pieces ellen this one just don’t come by everyday.

    Amado Macasaet

Danny Lim. “Dissent without action is consent”. Ibig sabihin, kung puro tayo dada at wala namang kumikilos, pagsang-ayon iyan. Hindi pagtutol.

Pag-isipan ninyong mabuti.

Ano pang natitirang paraan kundi dahas.

    jay,

it hurts me when i read something like those lines because i’ve been with the taosugs most of my life. i’ve had crossed jolo island tip to tip and i can say that it is much safer to walk even in its remote areas than in manila.

there is only one rule in dealing with them and winning their hearts and trust – respect their culture and beliefs. whatever is being offered should not be turned down or else they will assume you are not sincere in befriending them.

    sori din. and peace

“Piping dilat and Mrivera, anong say nyo sa say ni Macasaet?”

    ano pa nga ba?

    Jay Cynikho,

By the way, yung Code Of Kalantiaw na sinasabi mo earlier… that is a myth! There is no such thing… it is a product of a figment of imagination in the ’70’s when Marcos was trying to polish our Filipino culture… pareho lang yan nang issue regarding the Tasadays…

  66. piping dilat piping dilat

  67. piping dilat piping dilat

Ang sa akin kasi… we have to be consistent in our principles… ” The law applies to all or to none at all” … Also sinasabi ko nga … kapag yung kalaban mo e hindi sumusunod sa “rule of law” , pero ikaw lalaban ka under the “rule of law”, obvious kaagad kung sino ang mananalo… dahil may handicap ka na kaagad…

One last thing… it is always easier to defend the truth than to cover up for a lie… look how low the reputation of Gen. Barias had become, on how he handled the Glorietta blast…

  68. Salaam mulaykum mga BAGAY!!!!,

the statement of retired commodore rex robles that senator sonny is a double agent seems to bring disservice to a fellow mistah!!! this is way beyond my understanding.

I have read the book Double Cross System by JC Masterman but I cant find to logic to analyze what senator sonny did and that he even let his father antonio III be into it.

The 36 Accused’s should now go on HUNGER STRIKE.. ANY WAY FATHER ROBERT REYES WILL SPEARHEAD THE SPIRITUAL STRUGGLE..

    YAHALLAHU SA INYONG LAHAT!!!

  69. Toyen,

Antonio Trillanes III is not the father of Sonny. He is a brother according to information we received during his elelction campaign.

In short, kuya ni Sonny si Antonio III, who supported Sonny very strongly during the election, and as a brother, naturally, he was in the trial concerned about how his younger brother was being subjected to more injustice that he did not deserve.

Even you, I guess, would do the same for your sibling even when you are not asked to do so.

    Piping Dilat

Thanks for the info about the Code of Kalantiaw. The Code and Datu Sumakwel are associated with Panay Island, that side where EllenT I believe was born. Myths are about Gods and demigods. It is a legend then, about normative civil behaviour, a legend like Bernardo Carpio. The Code came to mind because it’s a memory of something good about our people in their golden days. Had I been fooled by my grade school teacher during the early fifties when she made us believed that we have original laws of conduct? What do you say EllenT, who am I to believe, Piping D or my teacher. I am likely to believe EllenT who I might have an annual festival on this legend?

You may not understand what I am saying Piping, but it is enough to know that we both love our country deeply in our own passion. Not with the passion and greed for self aggrandizement of our many countrymen.

You are lucky to have imbibed the rich culture of Sulu’s many people. I went only as far as Zambo City and a short guided walk at Rio Hondo, a long long time ago. Not lucky enough to visit my room mate in Jolo. Somehow I got to know from a distance some people associated with the place like Bayani Fabic and Gani Maulana. I shall not say more except I learned as a freshman to say words and meant them without even knowing (up to now) how to spell them. Azalam Mu Laikam, Mulaikam mu Salam. The spelling is not important, what beats in the heart is.

Do you know that “arrogance is the humility of the insecure” ?

“Do you know that “arrogance is the humility of the insecure” ?”

yes, thats why macasaet is insecure ever since gloria took over and when his beloved erap was kicked out

Hi Brownberry! I agree with you about the real colors of our Kababayan this time.

Indeed, Civil Society is now split into two or three. Some are on the opposition side and then the other are with GMA. Not only the Civil Society has this problem; even the opposition groups, the church, the CBCP. These days, it’s very hard to know who are who and which side one is. Sa pula, sa puti.
