Pathetic

Spare us, please, the lie that the guilty plea of Captains Gerardo Gambala and Milo Maestrocampo and seven other officers was not the beginning of the devious script that will end with Gloria Arroyo pardoning them.

Gambala and company were a pitiable sight in that presscon last Friday arranged by the military at the Philippine Army Officers Club. It was heartbreaking.

AFP Chief Hermogenes Esperon could have executed the script without subjecting the nine to further indignity with a public plea for pardon. The officers could have just written the fake president a letter. But no, Arroyo and Esperon get their high from torturing people.

Gambala et al’s pathetic public plea for pardon should serve as a warning to those who are thinking of availing of Esperon or Arroyo’s “kindness.” You will be stripped of your dignity.

What could be more pathetic than begging for forgiveness from a cheat, a liar and a thief? What could be more pathetic than asking for pardon from the most disliked person in the country today? What could be more desperate than pleading to be saved by someone who, herself, is fighting for survival?

It was painful seeing the degradation of the nine, particularly Gambala and Maestrocampo, from officers brimming with idealism when they made a stand for good governance in the AFP at the Oakwood on July 27, 2003 to what they are now- a picture of broken spirits.

Their statement which Gambala read was a study in confusion. They tried to appear humble but were not able to suppress their imagined self-importance. One sees through them the distorted minds of their jailers.

They said, “We apologize to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the institution we have severely damaged.”

It’s the height of conceit for them to think that they were the ones who damaged the AFP. Have they forgotten what they said in Oakwood, that the enemy bullets that are killing our soldiers, “actually came from the very government that we are fighting to defend?” That can happen only in a damaged military. They could not have damaged what was already destroyed.

They also said, “And as long as these institutions are functional, it is our duty to strengthen them – not to destroy them through force, violence and unlawful means.”

Wrong premise. The AFP has ceased functioning as an institution that protects and secures the Filipino people. In the 2004 elections, military personnel were used to thwart the will of the people so that Arroyo could remain in power.

Even the dictator Marcos had more respect for the military. It was the warlords that did the actual tampering of election results; the military merely turned a blind eye. In the 2004 elections, military personnel were used as cheating operators. And even did a lousy job, according to former Comelec Virgilio Garcillano’s in his wire-tapped conversation with Arroyo.

It’s laughable that Gambala talks about strengthening institutions while pledging support to Arroyo. Aside from the military, Arroyo has destroyed the Commission on Election, the Ombudsman, the legislature, the church. The latest victim is the Supreme Court.

Another misreading by Gambala and company: “Our actions at Oakwood brought political upheaval and further disunity. We have seen that instead of helping, we weakened the very country we dearly love.”

It’s Arroyo’s misgovernance that is weakening the country. In Oakwood, the Magdalo officers expressed the outrage of many concerned citizens over the lies and abuses of the Arroyo government. The people, even the cowards among us, appreciate the bravery of the young officers that dared take on an unelected government. It’s a pity that the nine regret such one rare shining moment of members of the military trying to redeem the damaged institution that nurtured them.

One can’t help but be touched when Gambala appealed to the public not to strip him of hope for a normal life. “I need to hold on to that not only for myself but also for my family. I have a son, a one- year old son. He does not know what is happening to my life now but would like to see him grow.”

Since with his appeal for presidential pardon, he is willing to support a liar, a cheat, and a thief, I’m wondering what is Gambala going to teach his son about truth and honesty.

I’d like to share with him something from the book, “The Kite Runner”. The narrator in the book, Amir, tells about the time when he was a boy, the mullahs in Afghanistan said drinking alcohol is a terrible sin. He relayed the lesson to his father, who drinks.

The father made him sit on his lap for serious talk: “No matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. “

The father continued: “When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness.”

What will Gambala and the eight other officers tell their children about Gloria Arroyo?

As already widely suspected, deals were made, and now the part of slowly and dramatically unfold the “conspiracy” to the Public to again gauge the reactions and then the eventual Pardon..nothing surprising anymore and once the Principals mastered the game of Deceits, no more scrupples of doing more. to them just another day’s work in the lives of the (fill in the blank)________…

Well… what have Gambala, et. al stolen from you lately, Ms Ellen? your dignity? your pride as a Filipino? I don’t think they are enough to ruin your life. You have a great career, a very strong personality… I don’t think you will be affected in any way, whether they are given pardon or not.

What is so pathetic about asking PGMA for pardon, when, even if she is illegitimate as you say, also happens to call the shots in this Land of the Morning? You still respect her, even if you do not want to, because her position deserves the respect, even if the person in that position does not deserve it. You respect her position, and I can see that; you just don’t respect the person.

She is the one in the position to grant them the pardon that they seek. They respect that fact. And there is nothing pathetic about it. Kanino ba dapat i-forward ang request for pardon? If she is illegitimate, to whom should they give it instead? Ako, wala akong idea. As for me, ang pakiramdam ko naman humingi na sila ng tawad sa akin, so pinatatawad ko na. Pero that doesn’t still give me the right to free them from detention. My signature would not do them any good.

Whatever procedure the law of the land tells them to follow, sundin na lang nila.

What laws of the land?

There is always a zarzuela in the government of Gloria. Gloria the lead actress and Asspweron the lead actor. Why do you want people to ask for forgiveness when Gloria was the one that got caught cheating and lying during the election. The only people that you can fool are the ones you give money. The whole world know that you are a cheat a liar and look at your Human Rights record, deep in your heart you know that it is pathetic. Are you comfortable that the people you jailed are honorable men? You are a hopeless case.

They may be convicted, but they still have the right to ask for pardon.

Etnad, I believe that Sen. Trillanes and the rest will likewise be considered for pardon. It’s not impossible. Hindi nila kailangang mag-sorry ngayon. Magpa-convict muna sila. Kung kaya nila. Delaying the hearing for Sen. Trillanes’ case is keeping him from being taken away from his senate seat.

All people at some point in their lives have to be selfish, whether you see yourself as an instrument for change in this country or not. As with the rest who were seeking pardon, Sir Sonny has likewise nothing to hold on to, except his senate seat.

xeno, the issue here is their last minute change of plea. it was contrary to the cause they were fighting for. it damages the case of the others who are pleading innocent. it certainly delivers their comrades to the ‘pharisees’. now the question is why the guilty plea????? now we know that there was indeed a deal. a script. plea guilty -> conviction -> pray for pardon -> recommendation -> pardon.

and the script is now playing on stage: “Teodoro, Esperon ask Arroyo to pardon 9 junior officers”

so it’s not on who to ask pardon from.

the issue is: why did they enter into the scripted deal?!

thirty pieces of silver and a kiss.

  20. UGN UGN

I dont think we need to agonize as to why they made the deal–its simply because they want to be set free. Pure and simple. But, i think we can only speculate what they intend to do once they are set free. Probably spend time with their families–thats what i would do. But if they are indeed set free doers that mean they have to sing GMA’s praises. Or they would be in a better position to act, move, mobilize and inspire? We dont know–we cannot be sure. If GMA is wily—why cant our junior officers be the same?
I personally resist the impulse to judge them–not yet, lets see what happens they may still have sa role to play before the end.

In the meantime–GMA is winning in the sense that she is succeding in dividing those moving aganist her..with her acts, she is able to undermine the groups who wish to end her reign…let us not allow her. The enemy, my brothers and sisters, is GMA and ger illegitimate regime–not Gambala, et. al. Please let us not forget that.

    GMA, alis na!

  21. xenocryst xenocryst

@langhab, as UGN said, it’s not anymore an issue of why they changed their plea, or why they made whatever deal that they were said to have made.

  22. All the more reason to shout “Foul!” to these sundalong kanin. No wonder they did not succeed. Puro duwag naman sa totoo lang. In fact, when they started boarding the bus back to the barracks dapat, I knew they chickened out except for Trillanes and the brave ones who are not willing to make a deal with the Evil Bitch and her minions.

She’s succeeding? Maybe, for the meantime because it is necessary to expose all the “bulok” of the government she has made to rot more than ever. Madali namang makita sa totoo lang. Problem is majority of the people there seem to have gotten used to the rotten government that they must think it normal to be rotten and not do anything about it.

    Kawawang bansa!

  23. Just think, there will be more crisis in October as Ellen has written but the people do not seem to care unless it is too late for them to do anything more. Golly, hihintayin nilang magutom sila ng husto and by the time they try to do something, wala na silang lakas na lumaban, and they will be at the mercy of the crooks who are buffeting them literally alive.

My condolence to all! Kawawang Pilipinas!

  24. Xenocyst,Gloria Arroyo committed a crime of theft (people”s votes and money). That”s why she is an illegitimate president. She should be in jail.

  25. Malaya editorial:

    Indecent haste

There should at least be a little finesse in the grant of presidential pardon to the nine Oakwood officers who were sentenced by the Makati regional trial last week to prison terms of up to 12 years for seven of them and up to life for two who were among the leaders of the 2003 caper.

They have already been in detention for close to five years. A few more weeks, even months, confining them to quarters while their court martial proceedings are winding up would give time for their high profile case to recede from public view. Forms have to be observed. They pleaded guilty to the high crime of coup d’etat. They should not get off with a slap on the wrist via a presidential pardon.

Everybody suspected all along that a deal was cut when the nine changed their plea from not guilty to guilty. Even the prosecution said after the sentencing that it found the life terms meted on Captains Gambala and Maestrecampo “too harsh.” The rush to pardon, however, would make a mockery of the statement coming earlier from the military leadership that the Makati court’s judgment would send a strong signal to members of the AFP that the government would no longer tolerate adventurism within their ranks. The message was intended to serve as a deterrent to those entertaining fresh thoughts of intervention, especially in the midst of new calls for regime change.

What prompted the military leadership to make an about face?

AFP chief Hermogenes Esperon, it seems, has bigger fish to fry before he ends his extension of service on May 9. Early last week, an aide to Esperon made an approach to the junior officers among the 28 who are facing coup d’etat charges for an alleged plan to march during the 2006 Edsa anniversary and declare a withdrawal of support from Gloria Arroyo.

Esperon apparently is seeking a reprise of the successful divide and rule tactic that drove a wedge between the Gambala-Maestrecampo group and the rest of the Oakwood boys identified with dismissed Navy Lt. (s.g.) Antonio Trillanes IV who is now a senator and as defiant as before.

Esperon’s targets are his PMA batchmate Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda, former commandant of the Marines, and Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, former commandant of the Scout Rangers. Esperon is willing to let the rest go as long as he could pin down Miranda and Lim.

But first he has to convince the Tanay junior officers of the value of his word as an officer and a gentleman. Thus the indecent haste to free the Gambala-Maestrecampo group.

  26. Ellen,

Excellent paper! Couldn’t agree with you more.

The liliputian whore’s gigantic and bloated ego, topped by her gargantuan lust for power and money have completely desecrated Philippine instituions.

She should be hanged from the highest lampost after being tarred and feathered!

  27. The rest of her cronies, beginning with Esperon and the Commission on Election ‘officials’ should be lined up and shot while her backers in the Supreme Court should be paraded in shackles as well as her colleagues in the legislature.

Those who don’t agree with this punishment should be told in no uncertain terms that they need to use listerine to cleanse their mouths.

  28. fly-by fly-by

What bothers me most about the sell-out, oops, plea of guilt and subsequent pardon, is that it unduly humiliates them. They accuse the government of killing its own men, and then they turn around and ask for forgiveness for that accusation.
The question therefore is not from whom they ought to ask for pardon in order for them to be set free, but rather, is it worth it to grovel, humiliate and condemn yourself to the garbage pit of history, to gain your freedom?
I too feel sorry for Gambala et al. They have truly suffered in prison. But they arent the only ones. By saying that they are willing to do this because they have suffered enough, spits in the face of those who have suffered along with them, but refuse to compromise their principles.

One thing that Filipinos can try doing is write a petition to the Australian government, particularly their legislature to deny entry to Esperon in case he runs to his reported ranch there for refuge. Puedeng gawin iyan and ng the government there will listen if there are millions of Filipinos signing the said petition. Ganyan ang nangyari doon sa Haiti president who was refused entries in countries responding to the demand and request of the Haitians so he could be tried in his own country.

Just a suggestion when the time comes for reckoning. Ganyan din ang puedeng gawin kay Gloria Dorobo, who BTW according to a friend in Pampanga is not really considered a pure Pampanguena unlike the father despite the evident trademark of a “Dugong Aso.” Kaya I doubt if she can seek refuge in Pampanga unlike the Marcoses who were loved by their fellow Ilocanos in Ilocos Norte.

I can understand that especially when you have relatives no doubt who would not want to go hungry, etc., but we all know for a fact that this moro-moro is done for the survival of the Idiota, who is the cause of it all, and nothing at all for justice to be done and to prevail. The idiota must have promised them a lot of things for their cooperation in making her look like a santa instead of the maldita that she definitely is.

I hope and pray that Senator Trillanes will hold on to the rod and gird up his loins. He need not deal with the Evil Bitch, for when he does, we know the idiota will be much more vicious and evil than ever before, and perhaps, start a real reign of terror much worse than what many had accused Marcos of during the Martial Law.

Kawawang Pilipinas!

    xenocryst,
Look at the more powerful Gloria than your god. She can get the freedom of heinous OFW criminals. I bet she can do something again with that child killer abroad. The arabs are nothing less than her justices and solicitors in all levels. Cant she pardon the nine cowards?

Lets not waste words, those nine admitted guilt of coup d’etat, a major crime especially for soldiers. Therefore, I think all those nine should be made an example and should be shot by firing squad. Lets, not forget traitor Angelo Reyes and Assperon, they deserve no less, both should also be shot. We’ll get to evil bitch Gloria at the proper time when 1 million pinoys decided enough is enough.

  59. Speaking of Ninoy’s incarceration, there were a lot of secret deals, I know, especially with the eyes of the world on the case, but what I found nauseating as a matter of fact was the publicity on this and that brutality then. One thing I know was that in some ways, Ninoy did not suffer much depravity the way Trillanes, et al are treated now.

Truth was during a tour at the Camp Crame on the request of some concerned media from overseas, I saw Ninoy golfing with some biggies in the government wanting I guess to see their faces in foreign newspapers as human rights advocates. I was still young then and did not bother much about politics. I was there as an interpreter for some concerned Japanese advocates of freedom and democracy.

Years later, Ninoy and his family were allowed to leave for the US to seek medical help for him for he was reported to be sick. What happened next was history.

Kung grabe ang state of justice noon, mas grabe ngayon. Binastos na ng husto ang hustisya.

  60. You bet, let’s not waste words on the 9 sundalong kanin, but it sure is worth expressing indignation over this new attempt to hoodwink Filipinos that this acquittal of the guilty (happens only in da pilipins no doubt) with executive pardon. Wow! Wala silang niloko as a matter of fact! May araw din sila as a matter of fact.

Ok lang yun, mga ‘tol! Let the soldiers play the kind of game they need! Gusto nila maayos yung buhay nila at ng kanilang pamilya, well, by all means, let them exercise their right to play the game! GMA is the real culprit here! Di naman natin nasuportahan din ang Magdalo in their cause and GMA is still up and running, what right do we have to condemn them for their actions, at least, they had tried one for their cause, tayo ba???

    Langhab,
There was never a deal with the government except for Aquino to remain at his tacit prison paradise in the US, but there was a deal with the steak commandos for him to be shot at the bulletproof vest when stowing away on his shoddy return which the CIA crew of the plane thought better and gave him the coup de grace. Note that the Taiwan security is under the US like Korea and Japan.

  68. irene irene

    Off topic.

    retiradong aktibo,

  70. Magno,

  71. Caution: I’m not so convinced that it was Faeldon that Ces interviewed.

  72. Hmmm. Of course, you know some things we don’t. For one, we can’t recognize his voice. Secondly, the call was too long Faeldon was taking too much risk of being located via triangulation. Maybe Atty. Trixie can share her opinion on this.

Come to think of it, it is not in Faeldon’s nature to be ratting about Gringo. At least, that’s based on the limited knowledge we have of him. It’s good you pointed this out, Ellen.

  73. I’ll let you know as soon as I’ve verified it. But the voice is really different. Even the words. Malalim na tao si Faeldon. I really have a strong hunch it was not he speaking.

If it was not he, what’s the drama? Esperon is up to something sinister.

Can they look at their fellow officers in the eye?

  77. parasabayan parasabayan

When I commented that the pain for the families of these 9 Magdalos must be too much that I can not blame them if they opted to plead guilty but with all the strings attached to this drama, now I can see the angle of deception unfolding! Asspweron and the evil bitch will capitalize on this guilty plea and the pardon!

He can’t take that risk again. Hopefully, he is safe, not six feet underground as many of those fighting against this oppressive regime have become.

Kawawang Capt. Faeldon, TUNAY NA BAYANI….

    MRivera,

With all due respect, have you heard of the apartheid in Africa, where a certain African, Patrick, was accused of being one of the Freedom Fighters? He really was not a member of the Freedom Fighters but, nonetheless, he was tortured to admit and to divulge information about the Fighters. His spirit didn’t break down until his wife was abducted and tortured just the same.

Point is, we all have our threshold of pain, his was when his wife was tortured and his two kids were greatly affected! He even admitted to be a member when he was not just for the Americans to release his wife! For him, beating a woman is way, way low

Again, who’s who in the culprits’ list?

My feeling towards Gambala, Maestrocampo and campany is pity. I have no admiration for them.

My admiration is for Sen. Trillanes and company. Also Gen. Miranda , Gen. Danny Lim and company.

Obviously, you misunderstand. I was talking about procedures in applying for pardon.

Bugso ng damdamin ng baliw at walang bayag.

By the looks, hindi ka pa nakukulong. Congratulations.

Being detained does a lot of things to you. Most of the time, you come out a changed man, and hopefully for the better.

Most of the people here talk as if they have seen everything, when most often their opinions are in blogs and not on the streets. Most likely also, only a few of us here have suffered fighting for what we believed in, taking our thoughts out in the open and being imprisoned by it, and not sharing the opinion of others and claiming it as our own. Having seen comments here just makes me see how one person copies the opinion of another until they come to a point when they believe that they, indeed, shared a common opinion and go about trash-talking whoever they want to. Take it to the streets, since most of you now here are sharing a common opinion. That way, you can really talk the talk, walk the walk.

Samahan niyo kaya ng pagbisita sa kanila, reach out to them. Para lalo ho ninyong maunawaan.

  88. xenocryst xenocryst

    Tongue-Twisted,

Commenting has been turned off in the other post on the 9 Magdalo soldiers, so I wasn’t able to answer you regarding forgiveness.

No need to ask any from me, your words aren’t even enough to offend me 🙂 So don’t worry about it.
