Sayyafs Seize Journalist, 3 Others In Southern Philippines

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 9, 2008) – Abu Sayyaf militants have seized a Filipino television journalist and two cameramen, including a Muslim university professor in the southern Philippine island of Sulu, police said Monday.

Police said Ces Drilon and her cameramen and their companion Octavio Dinampo were abducted in the village of Kulasi in the town of Maimbung. Drilon’s team arrived in Sulu on Saturday from Zamboanga City, said Supt. Julasirim Kasim, the provincial police chief.

“We received reports that the four were abducted by the Abu Sayyaf led by Albader Parad,” Kasim told the Mindanao Examiner.

He said Drilon’s group, from the television giant ABS-CBN, was believed taken to the hinterlands of Indanan town. Dinampo teaches at the Mindanao State University and is said to be helping Drilon in her coverage. The identities of the two cameramen were not immediately known.

“There is no demand yet for ransom,” Kasim said, adding, Sulu Gov. Sakur Tan convened the Crisis Management Committee to address the situation.

“Governor Sakur Tan is very worried over the safety of the victims and we are doing everything to locate them,” Kasim said.

Drilon’s group is billeted at the Sulu State College hostel in Jolo town where they took two rooms and left on Saturday afternoon after ordering foods good for 20 people, the local police chief Insp. Usman Pingay.

“We don’t know what really happened and why Drilon went without security to Maimbung,” he said in a separate interview.

A hotel staff said he saw Drilon hurriedly left and even asked her where she was going. “She was really in a hurry and I even asked her where they were going and Ces Drilon only replied that they would just be nearby. They never came back since Saturday.”

ABS-CBN television did not give any statement about the abduction. But Drilon’s group was the second from the television network to be kidnapped in Sulu in the past eight years – reporter Maan Macapagal and her cameraman Val Cuenca were also kidnapped on the island while working on exclusive news on the Abu Sayyaf.

Independent journalist Arlyn dela Cruz was also kidnapped in Sulu while covering the Abu Sayyaf. Another photojournalist Gene Boyd Lumawag was shot in the head by an Abu Sayyaf militant while shooting the sunset in Sulu several years ago.

The Abu Sayyaf had also seized foreign journalists covering the group’s kidnapping of 21 Asian and Western holidaymakers from Sabah. Most of those kidnapped were freed in exchange for ransom. (Mindanao Examiner)

Mindanao Peoples Caucus Condemns Kidnapping Of Peace Advocate, Journalists

We, the officers and members of the Mindanao Peoples Caucus strongly condemn the abduction of our Chairman, Prof. Octavio Dinampo, Ces Drilon of ABS-CBN and her crew as we appeal to their abductors to immediately release them unconditionally.

Prof. Octavio is a credible and well-respected leader from Sulu and a leading peace advocate in Mindanao. He has been in the forefront of peace advocacy, good governance and relief and rehabilitation efforts in the conflict affected areas in Mindanao. As a Convener of the Bantay Ceasefire, Prof. Octavio has exemplified the ideals of active non-violence and the values of respect, tolerance and dialogue of life and faith.

Prof. Octavio has served as the link of Sulu to the outside world having developed good relations among civil society and the donor community in rehabilitating the war-ravaged communities in Sulu. He has been a gracious and reliable guide of many visitors to Sulu and had consistently protected his visitors even at the risk of his own life.

We have always felt we are safest in Sulu with Prof. Octavio around us. At this time when he has fallen victim of the very violence that he has been trying to overcome, we readily lend our moral support and prayers as we continue to move mountains and hound the heavens for his safety and early release.

We appeal to the law enforcers and the military to exhaust all peaceful and traditional methods of negotiation in working out the release of the kidnap victims. We also call on our religious leaders from both the Christian and Muslim faiths to extend whatever possible support. Let this crisis see the strength of our solidarity and dialogue as brothers and sisters in Mindanao.

We wish to extend our prayers and support to the families and loved ones of the kidnap victims. Rest assured the MPC will mobilize its Bantay Ceasefire volunteers, peace networks and allies especially among the grassroots to reclaim the freedom of our Chairman Prof. Octavio, Ces Drilon and her companions. Finally, we all join our hands and ask God, Allah and Magbabaya to bless and grant our prayers.

    Atty. Mary Ann Aranado
    MPC, Secretary-General

If I ever mentioned heads as gift to Malacanan shortly, I didnt mean Cess Drillon and party nor anyone has any design of bad taste for them. I am sure Ces and co are willing guests of friends there. Nothing to be alarmed of. Lets hope someone from the peace office there try to show courage and ‘rescue’ them. What a better head…

Do you think the Americans kidnapped them or do you think that is George Bush fault. After all the are so much hatred of the Americans.

    A Muslim kidnapping another Muslim?

If you are from the area, you would not believe that a native like Octavio Dinampo would be kidnapped by his own kind. Even the bad guys would not do it and harm their fellow Muslims, how much more for a highly respected professor like Octavio. This is the reason why the MNLF (or MILF) and the Abus don’t engage each other in a firefight.

The only scenario where a Muslim may fight a fellow Muslim is when one is a soldier, the other a rebel. Or, when two clans have a standing feud. But kidnapping? Hah!

Ces Drilon and her crew were in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s too bad that even a local contact like Octavio couldn’t protect them.

  6. parasabayan parasabayan

This looks like another staged one to me. It has been a while since the kidnappers made some money doing what they do best. Could this be one way to get back at the Lopezes? Doesn’t Ces work for ABS-CBN too. I am not sure. But this kidnapping may be a prelude to something. Iam not a psychic but I can smell something very fishy!

  7. What’s the proof that the ASG indeed are responsible? If indeed they are ASG, then indeed, this must be a bunch of gunggong goons like those idiots for instance in Iraq who pretend to be members of the legitimate resistance movement but are in fact certified hoodlums, but then we cannot expect anything good coming out I guess from them if they are indeed members of the Al Qaeda cell in the Philippines calling themselves as ASG.

On the other hand, it’s but natural to suspect foul play in this still to be established kidnapping. One cannot help speculating that this can be the working of the power that be with the likes of Bunye for instance openly intimidating and threatening more valiant members of the Philippine media to beware and not emulate the example of NCO of Tribune whom they have heaped with this and that lawsuit!!!

Remember Drilon was one of those who must have earned the ire of the Donya Dorobo when she joined the media during the Manila Pen stand-off.

  8. ….One cannot help speculate that this can be the working of the power that be….

  9. Or, talagang nakikisawsaw iyong mga ASG to get fundings for their movement before the dorobos at Malacanang manage to suck blood money from the Lopezes who own ABS-CBN.

  10. OK lang kung ang labas ay “all swell that ends well” gaya noong nangyari noong kinidnap iyong INC journalist ng mga ASG. Ano bang pangalan niya?

  11. bitchevil bitchevil

You’re referring to Arlene de la Cruz reportedly an INC member who worked for Net-25. I wonder if INC paid the ransom. Even if they did, they would not admit it.

  12. Dapat kasi nag-iingat at the same handa nang mag-take ng risk.

Signs of the times and the last days.

I understand that even in the Koran such is written kasi may mga parts sa Koran na base sa prophecies ni Isaiah din that Christ in fact frequently quoted during His earthly mission.

Meanwhile, I hope and pray that Ces Drilon and Company will come home alive and in one piece. God help her and her companions!

  13. bitchevil bitchevil

The question is…if P10M is the asking price for the release of Ces and the others, is ABS-CBN and the Lopezes willing to pay this amount?

  14. Mike Mike

Whatever you guys think is the real motive behind this abduction, I just hope that Ms. Ces and her companions are not harmed in any way and that they will be released soon. Lets pray for them guys. Thanks

  15. Mike Mike

By the way, why is it that whenever someone gets kidnapped (not from media), the media is all over it even on the pleadings of the victim’s family not to report it. But when its their own who gets kidnapped they had a news blackout? Their reason? “… with utmost consideration for the safety of our news team” Whoa.. as if the other victims safety is of no importance to them. Sorry guys can’t help it. I knew someone who has been kidnapped before and these media outfits are like leeches.. the relatives just couldn’t shake them off. Ang kukulit.!!!

  16. parasabayan parasabayan

Sa wakas, nakapasok din! There are two angles here, first is to get back at the Lopezes and second is to send a message to the journalists that if they do not toe the line, they go to prison like Ninez or disappear like Ces. Again, it is very fishy talaga!

  17. parasabayan parasabayan

This is in preparation to the evil bitches’ trip to the US. This could also be another distraction to the looming “economic” crises. Whatever is the reason, I pray to God that Ces and her companions will be safe.

  18. parasabayan parasabayan

For someone who ignores the death and abduction of almost a thousand people, what is a few more?

INC never paid any ransom to anyone or to any organization, I know that for a fact. They don’t even take money from any government sponsored entities or any organizations that distribute financial assistance to religious organizations.
In USA a lot of religious organizations voted for Pres. George Bush because he promised financial assistance to religious organizations and Bush did what he promised. INC could have applied for those financial assistance for religious organizations and could have gotten millions of dollars easily but the INC never did.

The only reason that I can think of why it took a while for the INC journalist to be freed was they never found out that she is an INC member until later. If they found out that the journalist is an INC member on the first day of her abduction she will be freed right away on that same day.

What does muslim people think of INC? Click on links below:

  22. Why Blame US again for the abduction of Ces Drillon. This is what I am talking about,as long as there’s a terrorist we could not live in peace and here you are against the policy of US to eliminate all the terrorist and blame Bush again.

What do America benefited on the abduction of Ces Drillon? Does anyone who has a cloak and dagger mind can answer my question.

  23. sioktong sioktong

Marcos also tried to get tongpats from the INC at the height of his dictatorial power. He had never gotten a single cent from INC, the Marcos family and relatives knows that.

Marcos at one time required one of the minister of INC to be sent to his office in Malacañang because he was trying to put pressure on INC to give him tongpats. The INC obliged on Marcos order but INC gave Marcos condition that he has to return the minister at an appointed time. Marcos obliged and returned the minister at an appointed time.

  24. norpil norpil

it is not so important who kidnapped ces & co. what is important is what the authorities are doing to find them.what i am afraid is they cannot find them without the help of the americans.

  25. PSB:

I don’t know why pero malakas ang kutob ko na part and parcel ito ng palabas or showdown ni Gloria Dorobo sa mga Lopezes. Pinili si Drilon para sabay takot. Parang shooting two birds with one stone. Diyos mahabagin!

Truth is meron akong kaso ngayon dito sa Japan. Isang anak ng pilipina na nanghold-up. Hindi natuloy but all the same makukulong kasi mabigat na kaso dito ang hold-up na ginamitan ng panaksak kaya ang kaso talaga ay attempted hold-up at attempted murder. Dito iyan nabibigyan ng life or death sentence.

Dahil balak niyang manghold-up, pinulot daw niya. Ulol!

Pero not now, not in this administration ng mga sindikato!!! 😛

  27. Journalists in dangerous situations must constantly re-evaluate risks and know when to back down.

As Terry Anderson, CPJ honorary co-chairman and former Associated Press Beirut bureau chief, who was held hostage for nearly seven years in Lebanon, has said: “Always, constantly, constantly, every minute, weigh the benefits against the risks. And as soon as you come to the point where you feel uncomfortable with that equation, get out, go, leave it. It’s not worth it. There is no story worth getting killed for.”

Let’s pray for the safety and immediate release of Ces Drilon and her companions.

  28. Chabeli Chabeli

Didn’t Kapal Gloria appoint the Ass (aka Esperon) as Peace advisor in Mindanao ? Can’t help but wonder whether he would have something to do with this. Maybe he’ll present himself as “The Negotiator” – like what Robert Aventajado was during the Sipadan hostage (kaso he was alledged to have made money with the ransom money).

  29. bitchevil bitchevil

Sioktong, are you an INC member? Muslims could be sympathetic to INC partly because they both believe in one God and consider Jesus as merely a Prophet. Also, INC has been kind to the Muslims conducting several medical and humanitarian missions. The Muslims in Guliat, QC could attest to that. Other than those, there’s no evidence that INC did not pay the ransom. Those who kidnapped the INC journalists were bandits who did not care anything. INC does things secretly and without publicity. I believe they paid some money.

  30. My heartfelt wish for the safe return of these courageous individuals…

However, I find it strange that ABS-CBN would ask for a news blackout, not as a precautionary measure, but more so because there is a need for ‘their privacy be respected.’

Napansin ko lang, these journalists have the penchant for taking footages of people in their most private moments gaya ng pagluluksa, pag-iyak, away mag-asawa, atbp. I understand the need to infuse elements of human interest in news items. I hope, they start looking into themselves and realize that privacy is everybody’s right that needs to be respected by everybody else.

  31. Mike Mike

Ka Enchong : “I hope, they start looking into themselves and realize that privacy is everybody’s right that needs to be respected by everybody else.”

    My sentiments, exactly!

  32. bitchevil bitchevil

Sioktong, the two links that you gave were taken from Net-25 interviewing some Muslim leaders who were upset at Ely Soriano of Dating Daan for his comments against Mohammed. It’s a public knowledge that there’s a war between INC and Dating Daan; and INC capitalized on Soriano’s comments to get back at him. Recently, a former INC Minister who switched to Soriano’s group was gunned down by an INC Deacon in Pampanga. The case is still unresolved. The suspect is in hiding.

  33. Malaya reports, “PRESIDENT Arroyo yesterday ordered the PNP to bring back to safety TV news anchor and host Ces Drilon and her crew who were reported missing by their network, ABS-CBN.”

Wow! Akala mo totoo! She can’t lead, period. Puro yabang lang! Puede ba, pababain na!

As for ABS-CBN asking for a news blackout, gago ba sila? Bulgar na bulgar na, respect privacy? Mali yata.

Ang daming kumukurakot as what happened in the kidnapping of the Burnhams, et al. Pati iyong mga sundalo ka-connive sabi ng kaibigan kong Moslem that Grace Burnham confirmed herself.

Iyong corruption hindi lang nasa buto. Nasa dugo na yata!!! Maluknot sa totoo lang!!!

  34. sioktong sioktong

bitchevil, no I am not a member of INC but one of my relative, an uncle, is a retired minister.

The one in Guliat,QC I think is a muslim compound or area and yes they did medical missions there several times but the medical missions was conducted by INC not only in muslim area but also to non-muslim area. INC medical missions are being done all over archipelago that benefited all kinds of people regardless of their religion.

  35. Naunahan ako ni Chabeli.

I’m not worried that Ces Drilon and her crew may have actually been kidnapped by bandits. What I’m fearful of is when Gloria calls her Mindanao Peace Adviser Assholeperson to act on it. Juicekopo!

  36. Chabeli Chabeli

When I heard the news that Ces was “kidnapped”, I was horrified. I could not believe it was true. Having known her for several years, it’s an undescribable feeling when someone you actually know has been abducted, after all, there is a big difference when you know OF a person versus knowing the person. I can’t say we are the best of friends, but I can say she a real friend. Thank goodness it was a weekend when I heard about the horrible news because I had the time to allow myself to feel what I was feeling. Had it been a work day, it would have been tough at work for me. I must admit it was unbelievable at first, & so I called her on her cell phones. Her phones were turned off. That’s when I felt scared actually – & then my imagination had all these wild thoughts of she being harmed; wondering whether she was okay. I could only do so much in getting information. I was afraid that no was supposed to know yet. Like many here in Ellensville, I too, wondered why the news black out ?

Some days have passed already since Ces & her crew have gone missing. All I can actually do is pray like several of you have mentioned. If I am feeling worried, that is only an iota of what her family must be feeling.

One thing I know though is that Ces is a real friend any one could have. At this point, I think it’s best to think that this particular episode will be her biggest scoop !

I can’t wait to hear her laughter again !

  37. sioktong sioktong

Ever since INC started its congregation in Muslim dominated areas of Mindanao in the 1940’s or 1950’s they, the Muslims, never had a problem with INC. I think they like INC because there are no graven images inside it’s chapel just like the Muslim mosque.

Tongue, the ass being the villain again may be so true. He has not ceased to be a loyal dog. He will follow orders to inflict harm on anybody as long as his “queen” is happy.

  39. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

    Ellen,

I’m not sure if Prof. Dinampo is a Muslim.

He is. All Sama and Tausug from Sulu and Tawi-Tawi are Muslims by birth and tradition. The only ones who are not necessarily Muslims are the Badjau. Most of them are born animists and stay that way.

I do hope that Ces and company will be eventually released. But as tradition tells us, ABS-CBN must be prepared to pay at least for “board and lodging expenses” of the victims while in captivity. That’s how it goes there.

  40. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

    Tongue, Chabeli,

That’s the problem. The situation may get worse before it gets better. A govt negotiator (probably this Asshole who acts as Glo’s peace adviser, kuno) may only bungle it and magnify the ransom money because of the usual tongpats added to it. Like what Aventajado did before, according to eyewitnesses and kidnap victims themselves. 🙂

  41. bitchevil bitchevil

Sioktong, you said your uncle is a retired INC Minister. I’ve never heard of INC Minister who retired. Unless they become disabled, they serve until their old age until death. Yes, Marcos at first tried to scare INC but the latter did not give in. Remember those Metrocom soldiers sent to raid the INC Temple. Many died after they were shot by their own comrades who happened to be INC members. That incident scared Enrile and Marcos. As you know, Marcos and Manalo later became best of friends. I can understand why the Muslims are more sympathetic to INC than other Christian groups. They share so many similar doctrines. I heard of conflict between the two in Quiapo as well as in Guliat in the past. Later, they have settled their differences. The two need one another for their survival. The Muslims realize that INC has become so powerful while INC knows it’s
tough to deal with the Muslims. They scratch each other’s back.

  42. sioktong sioktong

Bitchevil, gising ka pa pala? My uncle was having health problems and could not do his function as a minister of INC.

Wow, bitchevil, I could not believe you know about the raid at INC Central. I think the soldiers and metrocoms were trying to shut down the radio station inside the INC compound on the day that Marcos declared Martial Law but INC did not let them in. It happened during night time. INC told the soldiers that they will turn off the radio station themselves so there is no need for them to enter the INC compound. I think INC was tipoff already that the soldiers will occupy the INC Central and just using the pretext of turning off the radio station inside the INC compound. True, some soldiers died while shooting at INC Central and they investigated how that happened? They found out the bullets entered the soldiers body from the back and not from the front. That means some of their comrades are members of INC.

  43. sioktong sioktong

Bithcevil, INC don’t need anyone or any organization to support them. They are the one’s who need INC and INC don’t need them. That’s the truth!!

Anyway, I’m offering prayers for the safety of the team.

Look at it this way. If the one strike policy is not operative yet, then theres nothing much to be alarmed of.

  48. parasabayan parasabayan

Initial reports are coming in and indicating that Ces and company are being treated well. It may not just be the 10 million that these villains want baka naman may kasama pang pledge from the Lopezes to stay away from attacking the evil bitch and also to lower the Meralco rates!

It is the lowest form of governance to involve hired goons(whether the Abus, MILF or NPAs) to get what one wants!

  49. chi chi

The Pidals have been hiring goons since forever.

  50. Valdemar Valdemar

    PSB,
Your hired goons line reminds me of what Tintin or her group on the steak commando mentioned as they go back discussing the EDSA 1. They had armed groups from the south ready to be called upon when necessary or somethng to that effect. I saw she was very close with an erstwhile governor there. Loren should do something about those goons if they are used now.

  53. parasabayan parasabayan

Cocoy, I like your humor! Subukan nga kaya natin, hah! May agimat siya. I heard too that she is very much into Fung Shui (did I spell it right?). Even the color of her clothes are in accordance to her Fung Shui! Siguro nga umuobra sa kanya yung century old beliefs! Ano naman kaya ang pwesde nating pangontra?

  54. parasabayan parasabayan

Didn’t the the Abus or MILFs also hold Dolorfino in their camp sometime ago but released him thereafter? I hope it will be the same thing with Ces. She will be released eventually.

bitchevil, disregard the statement “they(Muslims) are the one’s who need INC” because I don’t even know why they will need INC for? They can survive on their own and they are numerically and politically stronger worldwide compare to INC.

Same thing with INC. From the very beginning of INC it did not rely on any person or any organization to survive. Now, that it is at it’s glorious state why would they need anyone or any organization to survive? Hence, I stated “INC don’t need them” which applies to all organizations or persons.

So you’re saying INC only needs its members….members’ donations? Does INC mean “I Need Cash”? (joke only).

    bitchevil,
When the doorbell rings, the maid would come running to announce the INCompletes are coming.
Did you generalize all religions? Thats one reason I would like religion to leave us alone. Down with Religion!

I kinda agree with you Valdemar. Sometimes, religion destroys people. Since the beginning, many wars were caused by religious conflicts each one trying to outdo one another. Just imagine how many religious groups we have today each claiming to be the true one and of God.
