Two marines kidnapped

Update: MILF leader frees two Marines in Basilan More of this in comments section below.

On the heels of the kidnapping of broadcaster Ces Drilon and her team, the Philipine Navy reported that two marines were abducted last Tuesday, June 10, in Al Barkha, Basilan by MILF followers.

The marine were identified as Corporals Jessie Duatin and Bernie Alcabasa .

The Philippine Navy identified their abductors as MILF Commander Malat Sulaiman alias Long Masud.

Masud is demanding the release of his nephew Salih Dungkal Alih in exchange for the freedom of the two Marines. Alih is now detained following the arrest effected by combined elements of Army intelligence operatives and Lamitan City police.

Masud reportedky sent surrender feelers to Lt. Col. Leonard Vincent Teodoro, the commanding officer of Maruine Battalion Landing Team 7.The two Marine personnel were ontheir way to meet Masud’s emissary when they were halted at gunpoint and taken to Barangay Makalang in Al Barkha.

The PN’s press release said Teodoro expressed high hopes for the resolution of this incident. In his report, Teodoro stated that Salih Dungkal Alih may just be released by the court on the ground of mistaken identity when the court conducts a pre-trial of the case. The warrant Of arrest that was served contains the name Salim Alil Masud while the arrested person’s name was Salim Alih.

Teodoro reports that he has established lines of communication with Kumander Long through the aid of the latter’s sister and Alih’s mother Hadja Raiza Masud. As of 3PM of June 11, Teodoro reports that he has spoken through cellular phone to the abducted Marines.

Philippine Navy Spokesperson LTCol Edgardo Arevalo said the Navy reiterates its long standing policy not pay ransom or agree to concessions involving release of captured military personnel.

The Navy and AFP, Arevalo said, “ condemns the act of Commander Long Masud of resorting to abduction of the two Marines as a bargaining chip to command the release of his arrested nephew.”

He said the Navy/AFP will lodge yet another protest against the MILF “for this criminal act” with the Joint Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities of the GRP-MILF peace panel.

Talks between the government and MILF has been suspended and Malaysia, which brokers the talks, has started pulling out its peacekeepers.

    Ano ba yan?

    Kidnapping left and right.

  2. Everything is getting out of hand…

    Gloria must RESIGN NOW!

This could be a prelude to her martial law. Come to think about it!

Could these kidnappings be just staged by you know who?

  6. parasabayan parasabayan

They allowed these factions to arm themselves. As a matter of fact, wasn’t there allegations in the past that these rogue groups were being sold high caliber guns by the military themselves in exchange for money?

I remember when a marine commander intercepted about 300 high powered guns and some politicians asked him to give those weapons back. This was in Mindanao.

These rogue groups are used by rogue politicians to sow dissent, to raise funds for themselves and use for election cheating. You know who you are!

  7. parasabayan parasabayan

Baka kailangan na naman ng “anti-terrorism” funds. Maapit na naman ang elections. Everything helps, from billions of pesos na kunyari ibibigay sa mahirap ( I wonder how much of these will really go to the grassroots?) o baka naman umpisa na ng pamudmod sa mga “operators”. These unaudited money can easily be given to the “chosen” few. The same with these “ransom” money. Who knows where the money would go? Hati hati na sila and of course hindi lang yung Abus, MILF ang meron niyan. Who knows if our own rogue military officers are also involved? A rotten leadership does not bear a good institution. Follow the leader is always an easy justification of wrong doings. How can a rotten leader abort the wrong doings of the rogue groups?

  8. parasabayan parasabayan

Only a genuine, corrupt free leadership can stop the the “war”in the South. These rougue groups know if there is a genuine reaching out. Look what they get now as a “PEACE” adviser! The asspweron! One whose mouth spewed bile language at all times! One who always want to “crush” the enemy. One who always created enemies instead of allies. One who is so known as a cheat. So, if the kidnappings prevail, we know that there is a failure of leadership somewhere.

Mabuti pa si Erap na palaging pinupulaan. Somehow he helped the Muslims by his Muslim Foundation. He also drove the rogue Abus, MILF etc from their camps. There was genuine yearning for peace.

  10. Gabriela Gabriela

Now, now, parasabayan. I think you hit the nail. You said, “Baka kailangan na naman ng “anti-terrorism” funds.”.

Isn’t she going to Washington D.C next week?

  11. Valdemar Valdemar

  13. chi chi

While Yano is probing which could take months or even years (patatagalin talaga), the rouges in the South are into kidnappings and killings. What the hell!

Nangyayari lang iyan sa Iraq, etc. where there is war. Marino makikidnap? Unbelievable!

  15. Believe it grizzy. Under this government, even fairy tales come true.

  16. chi chi

Pakulo?! Hilong talilong na si Gloria!

  17. chi chi

    To diffuse Ces’ kidnapping…?

Fairy tales do come true, onli in da Pilipins!

  18. sioktong sioktong

  19. sioktong sioktong

    May nag post noon…

May pinsan akong sundalo noong mga late 1980’s or early 1990’s.

  21. Latest from Philippine Navy Spokesman Lt. Col. Edgardo Arevalo:

The two Marines held captive for nearly three days by the MILF had been safely released few hours ago at about 12:20 H un the morning .

No ransom was paid nor concessions acceeded to for the freedom of the two Marines.

The release followed the success of the efforts to secure the release of the Marines between military authorities and Hadja Raisa Muzad, sister and mother of Kumander Long Musad and Salim Alil Musad, respectively

The Marines were brought to the military hospital for medical checkup, stress test and debriefing.

Thank God for their release Ellen but we have a long way to go. Ces and company are still in someone’s hell hole!

  23. Valdemar Valdemar

    Chi,
I’ll tell you a story. Remember the Lamitan siege? The Palawan hostage taking would have terminated early if only there were navy boats operational during the slowboat crossing of Sulu sea. The siege happened where the group billeted on R & R right at the center of town. Since no intelligence was passed to the military about them,it means the military had no ally in that town from govt officials down to the policemen. Unfortunately then, an administrative movement passing through from the pier a few meters away was ambushed or rather made a shooting duck gallery. A captain was seen scampering everywhere we can deduce there were about 30 of his force or even less if most were on pass. They could not possible surround the two large blocks of the church and hospital to seal the place as radioed by their hqs. The shooters left through the back door with a parade. I would not like to read that part of the medal citation where they were outnumbered at the front street only.

  25. chi chi

    Valdemar,

Thanks for that story. I’m not familiar with the Lamitan siege but it’s my opinion that it’s a natural reflex of soldiers/people to scamper around when there’s a surprise attack, especially when they’re outnumbered.

Based on your story, there was a failure of intelligence. So it was not the Captain’s fault if they were outdone and was not proven that he was not brave, right?

  26. parasabayan parasabayan

Valdemar, was that where the then Captain Guinolbay was involved? He is one of the incarcerated officers now.

  27. Valdemar Valdemar

    psb,

    yes.

    chi,

Never outnumbered. Only outsmarted. Like on the recent beheadings, they were outsmarted. The two marines of late were coyed. And there were too many massacred companies. All in the south. We only had one success admittedly though, that of Erap’s attack. Wah na follow thru dahil wah ibuga. Kwarta, marami.

  28. Valdemar Valdemar

may phobia si Yano sa beheadings and down the line kaya maki-usap na lamang. Baka maambunan pa ng windfall.

  29. parasabayan parasabayan

Col Querubin got his Medal of Valor in one of these MILF operations. But the evil bitch gave back the camps to them. She may owe them the one million rigged votes!

  31. parasabayan parasabayan

Tongue, whoever got rid of Akbar must have known that Akbar was playing it both ways- the government and the rebels!
