Pakistan’s Musharraf announces resignation

Whatever you say of Musharraf, he still has dignity left in him which you cannot say of Gloria Arroyo.

ISLAMABAD (Agence France Presse) — Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced in a televised address to the nation Monday that he had decided to resign after nine years in power to avoid the threat of impeachment.

The former army chief, who seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999, was under huge pressure from the governing coalition to step down before it launched the first impeachment proceedings in Pakistan’s 61-year history.

“After viewing the situation and consulting legal advisers and political allies, with their advice I have decided to resign,” a grim-faced Musharraf said, backed by Pakistani flags and a portrait of the country’s founder.

“I leave my future in the hands of people.”

Musharraf made the shock announcement after denying that any of the impeachment charges against him could stand and launching into a lengthy defense of his time in power.

“Not a single charge in the impeachment can stand against me,” Musharraf said. “No charge can be proved against me because I never did anything for myself, it was all for Pakistan.”

He said that there was now law and order in the country, that human rights and democracy had been improved and that Pakistan was now an crucial country internationally.

“On the map of the world, Pakistan is now an important country, by the grace of Allah,” he said.

Musharraf’s popularity slumped last year amid his attempts to oust the country’s chief justice and then during a wave of Taliban suicide bombings that killed more than 1,000 people, including former premier Benazir Bhutto.

He imposed a state of emergency in November last year to force his re-election to another five-year term through the Supreme Court, but his political allies were trounced at the February polls.

The coalition of parties which won the February election, led by Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party, finally overcame months of divisions and agreed to impeach Musharraf on August 7.

It piled on the pressure with no-confidence votes in Pakistan’s four provincial assemblies last week. Then on Sunday it said it had drawn up impeachment charges and would lodge them in parliament this week.

The charges reportedly included violation of the constitution and gross misconduct.

Officials say that Musharraf’s aides have been in talks with the coalition, brokered by Saudi Arabia, the United States and Britain, to allow him to quit in return for indemnity.

Musharraf’s spokesman had repeatedly denied in recent days that he was about to quit, and it was not immediately clear what would happen next.

But a lack of apparent support from Pakistan’s army, which he left in November, apparently made other options — including dissolving parliament or even declaring another state of emergency — impossible.

Speculation over Musharraf’s fate intensified overnight when US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that granting asylum to Musharraf was not currently under consideration by the United States.

“That’s not an issue on the table, and I just want to keep our focus on what we must do with the democratic government of Pakistan,” Rice said.

Western allies want Pakistan to resolve the crisis over Musharraf so it can deal with the fight against Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, where nearly 500 people have died in the past week.

The government is also struggling to deal with a severe economic crunch.

Naalala ko tuloy ‘tong sinabi ni Mrs. Arroyo noon:

“…I believe that we can create a strong and modern Philippine Republic, but it will take personal sacrifice from each one of us.”

Warning to Gloria and other tyrants:

Gloria Macapal-Arroyo has no peoples’ mandate. She is a fake and usurper. Kapit-tuko at ganid sa kapangyarihan.

  9. chi - August 18, 2008 9:15 pm

  14. bitchevil - August 18, 2008 10:17 pm

Many other tough leaders even if duly elected by the people have resigned after realizing that they were unwanted and disliked by the people. Not this Evil Bitch. She’s a modern day Hitler!

  15. bitchevil - August 18, 2008 10:35 pm

Ocayvalle, Marcos was in power for 20 years but he did a lot of things for the country. Gloria is in power for almost eight years but accomplished nothing. Instead, she continues to destroy the country.

  16. ocayvalle - August 19, 2008 12:17 am

yes bichevil, madami man ginawa si marcos, ganon pa rin ang kasalanan niya sa mamayang pilipino,he destroyed the very essence of democracy in this country, marcos became the copy cat of all fake leaders of this country to stay in power illigaly, ramos tried to prolong his stay with his peoples initiative using mr pedrosa as using all kind of media gimmick and ramos idea of 20/20.. now we had GMA who will do things illegally to stay in power.. belive me GMA will do anything to stay in power after 2010 and she can, kasi ang me deperensya, tayong mga filipino na..siguro after 2010, saka lang tayo magigising..!! pilipino talaga pang ningas cogon lang.. look at our leaders now, they are all the same, their motto is to serve the people in the beginning, once there, their true colors is to steal the peoples money..as long as we are not united.. GMA will stay beyond 2010..

  17. bitchevil - August 19, 2008 1:21 am

Marcos destroyed democracy; but was it restored? Not by Cory.

Anyway, President Musharraf resigned to avoid impeachment. He should have been smart enough to learn from Gloria’s tricks. GMA survived two impeachments. She did not avoid impeachment but rather impeachment avoided her.

  18. tagairaya - August 19, 2008 5:50 am

The lack of apparent support from Pakistan’s Army left Musharraf no other option but to resign. Eh, ang army natin dito?

  19. bitchevil - August 19, 2008 6:45 am

Also, Pakistan has a very strong united Opposition.

It was those around Marcos including his wife Imelda who destroyed him and his government in the middle and later part of his regime.

  22. Valdemar - August 19, 2008 7:56 am

    Chi,
Ganyan na lang ba kagarapal ang simbahan?

    Tilamsik,
Musharraf copied the Philippine sample of a bloodless coup to get into power. But he cant stomach to copy now the Phlippine sample of clinging to the last.

    Bitchevil,
Behind the downfall of man is a woman.

  23. bitchevil - August 19, 2008 8:21 am

Valdemar, can we also say that behind the downfall of a woman is a man…a Big Fat Man?
