Bishops call for GMA’s ouster

That was one great statement that the Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, released yesterday. He practically called for the ouster of Gloria Arroyo.

Not in 2010 but now.

In a statement he read flanked by four other progressive-thinking bishops namely, Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz, Bataan Bishop Socrates Villegas, Masbate Bishop Joel Baylon, and Legazpi Bishop Emeritus Jose Sorra, Lagdameo said: “The time to start radical reforms is now. The time for moral regeneration is now. The time to conquer complacency, cynicism and apathy and to prove that we matured from our political disappointments is now. The time to prepare a new government is now. ”

In the open forum, Lagdameo said Gloria Arroyo is not capable of instituting reforms because he said, “I believe that the President is corrupt.”

The question and answer portion with Bishop Cruz was fascinating. Asked if Arroyo can lead the radical reforms, he replied, “Siempre hindi.”

Q: How about Vice President Noli de Castro?

Cruz: Walang ganyanan.

Q: How about Senate President Manny Villar?

Cruz: Walang ganyanan.

Q: How about House Speaker Prospero Nograles?

Cruz: Walang ganyanan.

Q: How about Chief Justice Reynato Puno?

Cruz: Pwede.

Q: How about AFP Chief Alexander Yano?

Cruz: Okay yun.

Q: Have you met with General Yano?

Cruz: Tama na. tama na.

It is about time that leaders of the Catholic Church whose consciences have not been numbed by Malacañang’s cash donations, do what they preach. They cannot be preaching “Thou shalt not steal” while closing their eyes on the thievery of Arroyo and her cohorts. Worse, accepting the fruits of Arroyo’s crimes.

Many Catholics have already given up on the CBCP when it comes to giving them guidance at this time when democratic institutions are degraded to protect Arroyo’s hold on power.

Lagdameo and the four bishops seriously doubt there will be an election in 2010 despite Arroyo’s pledge there would be one.

Cruz said their sources say “Elections in 2010 is a big dream. In short, elections in 2010 up to this time that I’m talking, is a moral impossibility.”

He asked the media to be on the alert when Congress opens on Nov. 10. “Charter change will be an open, public and well funded move in the Lower House. Whether it will triumph in the Senate is still debatable. But then I repeat, no more camouflage, no more double-talk, no more indirect insinuations. Charter change will be an honest-to-goodness agenda for Congress,” he said.

Arroyo’s Cha-cha, Cruz said, will be through a constitutional assembly. “The moment it passes the Lower House, and the moment it passes Senate and there is a plebiscite, then it is done, because the local governments are all at the command of Malacañang.”

Cruz said the charter change that Arroyo is crusading “is not for patriotic reasons.”

“It is intended principally, basically and fundamentally to extend the term of office of the incumbent. I hope to God and I pray very dearly that I am wrong but that is what I know,” he said.

It must need a military component for a successful ouster of Gloria Arroyo. Bishops’ move is too late. They should be more active during the height of Hello Garci political scam. The military played a key role in the ouster of Marcos and Erap. Pulis Ni Pidal (PNP) is no match with AFP’s firepower and men.

Bolante’s asylum application was denied because he gave the wrong reason. He claimed his life was in danger in Manila because his enemies from the opposition are after him. As a government official with all the protection given to him, the US immigration court was not convinced. If I were Bolante, I would use a different argument saying it’s Malacanang and the government that would harm his return. In the US, he could reveal all he knew about the fertilizer scam. Since he’s against the government, his return would result in persecution…his life would be in danger. Such argument for asylum has been proven to be successful against Marcos. Marcos’ enemies were able to get asylum approval on that basis. Many already have green cards and even are US citizens now in Manila. An example is the Osmena family.

I believe the bishops’ call for GMA to go is too late now. They should have done it long time ago, such as at the height of the Garci scandal, or when the Lower House was forcing its way to amend the charter, or when Lozada realized it’s time to spill the beans.

But there’s still a slim possibility, if GMA and her goons try to rescue Bolante, or prevent him from speaking out, ala Lozada style again. Maybe the people, who are now fed up of GMA’s promises and the rampant corruption that everybody notices, may do one last move. Depends on what’s going to happen next to rouse up people to anger.

salamat naman at naliwanagan ang isipan ng mga puno ng simbahan…my reliable contacts also confirmed the chacha 2009 and no election 2010 scenario, siguro matibay na ang basehan ng mga obispo sa nakakasukang plano ng malacanang mafia at arroyo corrupt-poration.

kaibigang diego, the afp is not loyal to arroyo and they are only waiting for credible leaders to unite us, and with cbcp call for gloria ouster is enough to enlighten the patriotism among our brave soldiers. most ranking afp officers and junior officers who are in silent but known critics to gloria is now jubilant and ready to support the peoples clamor for new government.

bitchdevil, the cbcp majority only compromise its stand on various issues maybe for a lot of reasons but maybe they know something that we dont know…and perhaps that the reason for a sudden ouster call and new government clamor.

its our duty to support the ouster call and support the voice of the people…enough of malacanang mafia and arroyo corrupt-poration!

We must also pray and ask our Lord God guidance and strength to overcome this crusade of reform and fight against corruption.

Nothing new with AB Cruz speculations, diba? We expect GMA to hang on to power by the tip of her fingernails. Kailangan putulin ang mga daliri. Talagang di puwedeng patalsikin sa salita lang.

I bet that Bolante gets away from whatever charges are brought against him. That is one thing that attracts corrupt people to GMA. She protects them with impunity.

Up to now, unfortunately, walang credible united opposition. Sorry na naman tayo.

  12. iwatcher 2010 iwatcher 2010

    not sorry…kaibigang isagani

at this point in time the cbcp is not looking for opposition or any politicos, kailangan muna nating magsama-sama at magtulungan upang maiayos ang sistema ng gobyerno. at sa aking pananaw, they are pursuing SC Chief Justice to lead a transitionary take-over government, implement guidelines for immediate elections…but first they need the support of the citizenry for protest actions and to break the fortified walls of malacanang mafia and arroyo corrupt-poration.

meron na silang basehan sa kanilang panawagan to break silence and clamor for new government, prior to their bold statement they have dialogues with different sectors of the society including other members of pidal mafia who are now experiencing conscience-check and enlightenment of the sad reality of corruption scandals under the glorias regime.

we need their support, the cbcp call is for real after a thorough evaluation of facts and evidences…maging mapagmatyag tayo, makilahok at manindigan sa ating krusada laban sa katiwalian.

we need to unite and act together, di pa huli ang lahat and kaibigan never say sorry coz its part of political process and our countrys transformation towards good governance will only be realized if we act as one and and the burning desire to change and reform our system is within our heart.

november 2008 will be a sad month for gloria etal…

The bishops took a very long while to wake up from the sleep of the awake; and to see and hear what even the blind and deaf can feel. Why it came so sudden? Is this a rude awakening among them?

Bishop Cruz is okay. He is always and very consistent in his position. Among his colleagues he was almost the only one left standing in his crusade against the evil government of Gloria. As to the others, I don’t know where they are coming from but if they really mean and willing to take the lead, then by all means, bring it on and let the fight begin.

  25. myrna myrna

ellen, in fairness and fyi sa ibang kasamahan natin dito sa blog, i know personally one of the bishops you mentioned, and i guarantee you that he has a firm stand for a moral government. he had been fighting all along this line ever since, ang problema nga lang, outnumbered siya. he and cruz may just be a voice in the wilderness sa cbcp, but now that lagdameo had taken a stand publicly by issuing the aforesaid statement, sana naman, magkaisa na ang mga tao, to prevent the dodgy plan and intentions of gloria and her cohorts.

i know, as far as credibility is concerned, talagang hirap ang cbcp (in its totality) na itayo pa rin ang watawat :), but given that there are these, as you say, progressive-thinking, bishops who made this stand now, is not worth a try to just solidify and push through with ousting gloria? enough is enough!!!

i just also hope that socrates villegas, having been instrumental in the erosion of the credibility in the government and in the bishops, would try to redeem himself…this time, for good, at walang envelope, nor medy to boot!!!

  32. A Call for Action

The undersigned members of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1955 view with serious concern the prevailing behavior quality of our alumni in the military and police services. Several recent unfortunate incidents assailing the integrity of some PMA alumni focus attention on the moral condition in the armed services. These episodes cast doubts on the efficacy and content of the training we got from our Alma Mater. Were we trained to quibble and dissemble and distort the truth?
Our training as cadets in PMA constantly hammered in us the principle of personal moral accountability. The military culture we were immersed in is supposed to imbue in us as military professionals a strict Code of Honor. As military officers we are not expected to be impeccably perfect in our personal and moral lives, but we are demanded to be responsible for all our actions. When caught in violation of anything, whether insubstantial or enormous, we are indoctrinated to admit guilt and be prepared to accept appropriate punishment. Such a moral requirement is expected to inhibit misbehavior on our part since wrongdoing will always be exposed. Our indoctrination is intended to infuse our military profession with honor and thereby merit the trust of the people we serve and protect. Although we are to be trustworthy in the military, this is more to be expected from those in the police forces because they are obligated to seek and uphold the truth.
We, therefore, call on our comrades and co-alumni in whatever armed service they belong to be militant in cleansing ourselves and bring back to our ranks those who stray from our Code of Honor. We ought not to accord any honor to those who bring discredit to our military service. Even as our society is perceived to be sinking in corruption and moral decay, we still hope that with discipline and rejuvenated moral strength, the military – especially the alumni corps of the Philippine Military Academy – can still regain the trust, confidence and respect of our disillusioned and demoralized people and lead them to national moral recovery.

On this issue, I support the CBCP’s fight for corruption. However, I am not comfortable with their idea of new government.

The magnitude of corruption in our country is immeasurable it resulted to deaths, famine, illiteracies, crimes, homelessness, unemployment, suicides, stress, ……. and even the war in Mindanao.

CBCP’s idea of a new government is not explicitly stated. If what they meant is federalism, then they must be supporting the present government’s plan of perpetuity.

Gloria has taken the Filipinos, once again, to this point of brinkmanship. However, should blood be shed because it is the only way to cleanse the Philippines from evil & from all that is ugly, then, that could be the inevitable.

    God bless the Philippines.

The way magsalita si Donald Dee sa isang Archbishop is it seems parang kapantay nya lang ung taong kausap nya at hindi taong-simbahan.. parang nagsalita sa anak na lagi nya lang binibigyan ng ‘allowance’ kaya pwede nyang pagalitan ng ganun-ganun.. sandali, hindi kaya binibigyan nya nga ng allowance courtesy of PCCI?…

Those who were born in the 60s and 70s cannot forget one Dewey Dee who ripped of the banks of millions and then escaped the country. He’s reportedly now living in Canada. Dewey is the older brother of this Donald Dee.

To chi, Chabeli and menOk, this could be the reason for the arrogance of a close GMA supporter, Donald Dee:

    O. D. Corpus stated that a Spanish author Joaquin Martinez de Zuñega was already warning just after 1801 about Chinese acquisition of all the lands of the natives. By the 1880s, great number of Filipinos were driven out of business by the Chinese.(1)(2)

In 1896, a group of Filipino merchants and manufacturers made a report on how the Chinese were excessively exploiting our soil, corrupting our population and draining our resources and the threat of damage to us “within a few years”. The report recommended to the government of Spain security measures such as, suspension of immigration and controlling activities, of the Chinese in the Philippines.(3)

It would have been our next logical step after we became an independent nation in 1898. Unfortunately, the military might of the Americans intervened by their invasion in 1899. So the focus of our efforts against the Chinese invasion was suspended and turned towards resisting the American invasion.

It was during the American occupation that a Chinese economic-legal unit, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce was activated in the Philippines. It was tasked to block any of our legislative moves that would be in conflict to their interests and secure passage of those which they considered friendly to them.(4)

By 1924, many thousands of Chinese have already infiltrated thru the long stretches of our seacoast or ports, “in the thickness of the night”. They subverted us Filipinos who attempted to stop them thru bribery.(5)(6)

Around November of 1924, we tried to setup a legal channel of check points for identifying and assessing foreigners entering our country as part of our defense system of checking further foreign infiltration.(7)

However, while our legal check points where still in the setting up stage, the Americans, with their military might providing cover to the Chinese, already dismantled them.(8)

In 1927, we attempted again to set up legal check points to check continous foreign infiltration.(9)

Immediately, the Chinese who are under the protective cover of the military might of the Americans blocked our attempt again.(10)

Our dragging experience of loss of our check points to the Chinese, made us ponder in 1924 and in 1928, the progressive impotence of all layers (physical, political, economic, legal, etc.) of our security system. It´s impotence to check any foreign threat to the integrity of our own flesh and blood, will logically progress for as long as Americans have any form of control over us.(11)(12)

We tried strategies based on our present condition to gain control as much area of our nation as we could against the foreigners. The start of our series of manoeuvres thru legal operations with the Retail Trade Nationalization Law in 1954 however, was out-manoeuvred by the Chinese. After we implemented this law, some 8700 of the 10,000 Chinese who rushed to get hold of certificate of Filipino citizenship papers after 1946, did so after 1954. We Filipinos actually overrun previously Chinese-controlled areas the strategic value of which where at most, of low significance. Thus in paper, the number of Chinese registered as engaged in the retail trade was reduced and the number of Filipinos engaged in the same business was increased. In reality however, there was no physical difference. The difference was only in paper.(13)(14)(15)
