A magical tour in Macau

venetian-lobby

Jullie Yap of the Manila Bulletin, Mandy Navasero of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and myself had a magical experience last weekend courtesy of someone we don’t know and we haven’t met.

Through a friend who want to remain anonymous, we were extended an invitation for a three-day visit to Macau. Accommodation: The Venetian.

Off we went last Thursday. I’ve never been to the The Venetian Las Vegas but those who have been there say the one in Macau is much, much bigger.

“Big” is too small a word to describe the The Venetian. Inaugurated two years ago, it’s grand, sprawling, overwhelming. It’s website describes the area as “equivalent to 56 football fields and large enough to hold close to 100 Boeing 747 jumbo jets. “

The Venetian is actually a make-believe city of Venice in Macau complete with the famous canal. And of course, the gondola. If you take the gondola ride, you will be serenaded by a baritone accompanied by a guitarist. I noticed it’s a Filipino (one of the more than 2,000 Filipinos employed in the hotel) who was the gondola entertainer. But if you want an Italian singer, the hotel can accommodate you as what one Filipina did. All throughout the day, Vivaldi’s music is played.

According to a report, the choice of Venice as the resort’s theme came from the wife of Sheldon Adelson, chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, which owns and operates The Venetian hotels. Mrs. Adelson reportedly fell in love with Venice where they had their honeymoon.

The attention to details in re-creating Venice is amazing. At the food court you have the Venice sky as ceiling. Through creative lighting, the time of the day is simulated. The residential apartments along the grand canal are re-created complete with the curtains, flower boxes, and lighted rooms.

All the flowers are fresh. Cymbidium, imported from Holland, adorn the receptions desks. Phalynopsis orchids are all over the place.

We were supposed to meet our host for dinner Thursday night. Instead we were met by two of his female staff , Ashley and Carol, who said the boss had an important meeting. The ladies hosted us at the Lei Garden. It was the best 10-course dinner I ever partook. I imagine it was the most expensive. We had shark’s fin soup.

For Friday evening’s activity, we were given tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s Zaia, about a young girl who dreamed of being an astronaut. It was a mesmerizing experience as we soared with Zaia to outer space. Cirque de Soleil trapeze was was simply breathtaking.

During the day, we explored other Macau’s attractions. Jullie said it’s a must that we eat Macanese food, combination of Portuguese and Chinese cuisines. The front desk guy told us to go to “Fernando’s restaurant” and even wrote for us the restaurant’s name in Chinese. Per his instruction, we took the shuttle bus to The Sands hotel on the other side of Macau (I said other side because we crossed an ocean through a long bridge) . From The Sands, we took a cab. We showed the driver the piece of paper with the Chinese characters. The driver nodded smiling which indicated that he knew the place.

Off we went to Fernando’s. We crossed the bridge again. We wondered, if Fernando’s is on the other side, that’s where we came from. Why did we have to go to Sands in the first place? It was hard getting an explanation from someone whose knowledge of English is limited to nodding of his head and with our Chinese limited to shie-shie (thank you).

Fernando’s , a quaint restaurant beside Hac Sa beach in Coloane is worth the trip. Their grilled fish and bean dishes are unforgettable.

Fishermen from Fujian and farmers of Guangdong in China were the first known settlers of Macau when it was still Ou Mun, which means trading gate. In the 1500, the place came into the administrative control of Portugal. It reverted to China in 1999.

Known for Stanley Ho’s casino even under Portugal, China has developed the 29.2 square kilometer area into a gambling capital. Its number one customers are Chinese from the mainland. It’s accessible by air and by ferry from Hongkong. Everyday, busloads of visitors from mainland China fill up the Macau casinos. There are thousands and thousands of them.

There are also thousands of Filipinos working in Macau. But one of the The Venetian staff said there have been layoffs the past months. The global financial crisis has reached the shores of Macau and cast some gloom in the otherwise clear blue skies of fake Venice.

We asked a bellboy if it was true that Mike Arroyo was in Macau with a female companion , not Gloria Arroyo, last month. He said, Mike Arroyo does not stay in The Venetian. He added, “He stays in Stanley Ho’s Grand Lisboa.”

  1. Thanks for the tips. You gave me an idea where to go next for a holiday although the truth is I don’t gamble.

Next year, my friend and I plan to go to Europe, and we’ll surely include Venice.

  2. bitchevil bitchevil

I heard Las Vegas is currently experiencing business problems due to US financial crisis. I don’t know if Macao too.

  3. Income generated in casino are diving down deepthroat. In Vegas unemployment is rising. Not,only in US is suffering recession but also in Japan,Japan is in a very serious situation.Corporate powerhouses like Toyota, Honda and Sony have seen profits dive down the sink.

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown of Economy in the US, Management has decided to implement a scheme To put workers of 40 years of age on early retirement. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People early).
Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to management to be eligible for the SHAFT scheme (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW scheme (Scheme Covering Retired Early Workers). A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as Management deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED can only get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependants or Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance).Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by management.

  4. bitchevil bitchevil

I’m not sure if I understand forced early retirement for workers 40 and above. What if the guy begins working at age 39 and after two years when he reaches 40, is he being forced to retire?

  5. Hahahaha!
If you only star to work at the age of 39 and have your first job, there must be wrong with you since you turn 18 and have a driver license.

  6. Only a jeprooks filipinos do that. They only find job after get married and have 2 babies when the in-laws kicked them out at Mama and Papa’s house.

  7. bitchevil bitchevil

I was serious with my question. Let me clarify: What if the guy starts working at the company at 39…is he going to be fired at 40? Assuming he has been working with other companies for the last 20 years. That was what I meant, dude.

  8. My friend,
Do you have problem analyzing between Humor and Logic.Of Course! my post about RAPED,AIDS and HERPES were not in a company’s policy. It was not written in any labor code books.LOL

  9. bitchevil bitchevil

I’m mentally and emotionally unstable these days because of the Evil Bitch’s continuous stay in power so I can’t distinguish between humor and logic. Sometimes, I laugh at a joke but tears fall from my eyes.

  10. Hahaha!
You need to gamble once awhile or go fishing.Taking too much anti-depressant pills will drain your brain.

  11. I have do to the laundry before my wife cut my allowance. This is a life of a retiree, the spouse always hold the bank account and they’re the one who go to bank to cash my check.

I’ll be back after ironing all the clothes.Hahahaha!

  12. bitchevil bitchevil

Do you also have to iron your spouse’s bras and panties?

Even Macau, according to CNN, etc., has been hit by the recession. No one is spared except if you are in business of the basic necessities like food, I guess.

Kaya pasalamat talaga ako sa recommendation ng church namin na mag-store ng pagkain at mamuhay ng simple, and not beyond one’s means.

I won’t starve for at least 90 days dahil may stock akong pagkain for more than 3 months. Recommendation nga sa church namin one year, but I don’t have the space to do so. Amazing talaga!

  14. Our PM has offered to give everyone money to spend, but it is still being debated on. At least, I’m not that much affected myself as I am in a business of the basic necessities. Even my husband’s factory is doing fine. His company produces safety valves for gas. He’s doing good business now with Indonesians.

Just recently, I bought a Honda Life (Fine) for about 850,000 yen all inclusive (insurance, registration, navigation, etc.) It is a new model, and I bought it from a Toyota dealer.

Apparently, the two car companies are coordinating and cooperating with each other for their own survival due to the recession caused mainly by Bush’s warmongerings and crooks like those stockbrokers engaging in fraudulent stocks, etc., plus iyong mga balasubas na utang ng utang and magnanakaw like the Pidals.

Kaya ano iyong pinagyayabang ni Tapalani na boosted economy ng Pilipinas na dependent sa Tate, utang at human and even drug trafficking? Sinungaling talaga ang animal.

We’ll see ang yabang niya depending mainly on the OFWs who are now being laid off en masse kung saan-saan.

I think storing foods for the rainy days is biblical. I just forget what verse it is. Anyway, if people learn to save for the hard times, there would be less problems in the world. What they do is to enjoy life…drink and be merry. And when trouble and hard times come, they complain and go crazy.

The Venetian, the $2.5B casino-hotel complex in Macau is owned by American Billionaire #3 (2006-2007) Sheldon Adelson. He also owns Sands hotel-casino and used to own COMDEX, the world’s biggest computer and electronics trade exhibit, before he sold it to the Japanese. This year, he will also open the biggest casino-hotel in Singapore’s Marina Bay which is more expensive than The Venetian in both Las Vegas and Macau.

Adelson, a street-smart businessman who did not finish college, started his modest entrepreneural skills selling newspapers as a teenager to help his taxicab driver-father in earning a living.

  17. Tongue, we didn’t take the Gondola ride. We just enjoyed watching.

  18. Grizzy,

The Sun also set in Japan. The world is facing a tough recession.

Stop being too proud of Japan and ridiculing your native land such as murdering every elected officials in government how stupid they are in your views.

I’ve been there, the expatriates in Japan inhabit an Edenic state of bourgeois affluence with no strings attached.I enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle, yet remain untroubled by civic duties. I can’t vote, I may lack linguistic fluency, my opinions are presumed to derive from my national stereotypes, I rarely blip on the national radar, so I absolved from caring overly about where I live. Japan’s problems, maybe not my problems.

My sharpest worry is that national homogeneity continues to be Japan’s modern religion. There are no degrees of citizenship there: if you are not “a Japanese” your gaijin status is hammered home at every encounter with officialdom, every gape and every well-meant compliment on your chopstick skills.I know that in the immigration authority’s hierarchy of gaijinhood, Caucasians have a far easier time than, say, Filipino like you or a “Japayukis,” Russian exotic dancers or South American laborers. My point is that foreignness is like a magical garment from a folktale, one with the sewn-in curse that its wearers cannot remove themselves. Only social consent will allow you to feel at home in his or her Asian mother-country.

Japan withholds this consent like a zealot withholds an admission of doubt. At the political level there is no provision for dual nationality in adulthood, so on his or her twentieth birthday of your child, they must go through the ritual of renouncing Filipino citizenship in the eyes of Japanese law? How could you be considered a patriotic Filipino if you denounce your Philippine citizen, like divorcing your parents?

  19. vonjovi2 vonjovi2

More power sa inyo lahat diyan.

  21. tru blue tru blue

You are not obligated to gamble when inside a casino and DO NOT PLAY SLOT MACHINES. There’s no such thing as “lucky day ko ngayon”. OR, “I have fifty bucks to lose”. A true loser’s mentality.

Sheldon Adelson is richest person of Las Vegas and of Jewish ancestry. He is going bankcrupt for all I know and other corporate casino owners IF this economy doesn’t improve within two years.

  22. We never touched a single casino chip.

We only entered the casino to pass through from one end to the other. Even that, I had to walk fast because of the smoke. Because of the huge area one has to cover to get to the other side, sumasakit talaga ang dibdib ko sa usok.

The restrooms near the casino even have ashtrays. That’s what i didn’t like.

  23. If you want to see ugly and lonely people, go to the casinos in the morning. I saw that depressing atmosphere in Las Vegas. It’s the same in Macau.

Men and women, with haggard oily faces, uncombed hair in front of slot machines, smoking. Such an ugly sight!

  24. bitchevil bitchevil

If there are ugly people in the morning, then why not go in the evening when there are beautiful people?

  25. If you want to see ugly and lonely people, go to the casinos in the morning.–Ellen

Hahahaha! But it’s true,Yes bitchevil they look good at night from the start.

One is the fact that in the casinos, just like in most public schools, everyone has to deal with everyone else. Some well-known philosopher, whose name I have forgotten, once said, “Hell is other people.” Well in the casinos, there is plenty of hell because there are plenty of people. The great unwashed meet the great washed, so to speak.

You can’t escape them. No matter where you turn in the casinos, you will find people: big people, little people, fat people, skinny people, pretty people, ugly people, smart people and dumb people. You’ll find people moaning and groaning, cheering and leering; happy and miserable. Indeed, if you went to public schools, you are probably very familiar with all the types of people you can meet in the casinos.

Some casino gambling expert sometimes wonder why so many casino gamblers make such horrendous bets. Why, they ask, do so many casino players play games and make wagers where the house has double-digit edges on them? This bizarre behavior confuses some gamblers. They can’t fathom how someone can contentedly or discontentedly lose bundles of money – and keep coming back to lose even more.

These gambler have forgotten their public school education, if they went to public school that is. In the real-world of the casino, just as in the real world of public education, most people are…how can I put this politely…most people are, uh, not as smart as you would hope.

When you were in high school, you probably looked around your school and said, “My god, most of the people in this building are really stupid.” And most were. Oh, yes, there were several who were battling it out for the “dictorian” awards – valedictorian, salutatorian, and class speaker. But there were dozens, if not hundreds, who were in a life and death struggle for the most respected title – the DUMB-DICTORIAN! More people could compete for the stupidest kid in the school than could compete for the smartest kid.

Flash forward to the adult world and what happens? The dopes grow up. They don’t get any smarter, although they do slow down a little bit as gravity and age have their chilling effects, but these dumb-dictorians, each and every one, remain hopelessly, uh, hopeless.

Now, if you are playing a slot or video poker machine, the only time you deal with these people is when they bump into you or hover over you wanting to snatch your machine. Sometimes you can smell some of them as they make their way past you in the slot aisles. But you usually don’t interrelate. You are just aware they are around.

However, when you are playing the table games such as blackjack, craps, roulette or others, the dumb-dictorians make their presence known in many off-putting ways. They engage in dumb conversations; make awfully unfunny jokes; complain about their luck; tell boring stories about their children or grandchildren. And they usually play horribly.

The land area of Macau is only 3 times the size of Boracay and yet, it is one of the richest cities in the world.

In 2006, its gaming revenue surpassed that of the Las Vegas strip, and gaming-related taxes accounted for 75% of total government revenue. GDP is around $37K.

Influx of tourist is 90% more than the Philippines. Most of their tourists comes from neighboring China, the most populated country in the world. Can our country catch up or get close to Macau’s tourism? Yes, since it has more to offer but it has to make lots of improvements.

  28. I can only say about our experience in The Venetian but one impressive thing about it is their efficiency. Capital E. Just the signage. The place is huge but it’s easy to find your way. Malalayo lang but all your have to do is follow the signage, It’s everywhere from one end to another, in between, you can find the place you are looking for.

In the restaurants, there’s always one who can attend to you. Unlike here in Manila when catching the attention of the waiter is already an effort.

    Arroyo: 500,000 job openings abroad

MANILA, Philippines – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has announced that 500,000 jobs were waiting for Filipinos overseas, as she stressed the importance of matching workers’ skills to the demand abroad.

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said these were actual job orders for Filipinos, mainly in the construction sector in the Middle East, Canada, and Australia.

…..Instead of announcing that there are 500,000 jobs in the Philippines, it’s abroad. Bitch !

I used to frequent HK in the late 70s and mid-80s but I never went to Macau. Apparently Macau just recently became famous.

My cousin just went there too two weeks ago. He is usually my partner bringing visitors to Las Vegas frequently so I asked him to describe Macau. He said it is a mini Las Vegas. I guess it is much better in its ambiance becasue it is in an Island.

The gambling industry makes 85% profit! Only 15% goes back to the gamblers. So, with this profit margin, the gambling industry may have temporary set backs with the recession but it will come back with a BANG! Gambling is a way of life for some people.

I do not gamble at all. I put my money in a calculated risk. But I enjoy looking at newly built theme hotels and shows when I go Las Vegas.

I will definitely like to visit Macau one of these days.

Yuko, enjoy your Venice trip! Venice is certainly a romantic place to go to.

She does not care about our women being raped, about our seamen being abducted, about our OFWs imprisoned and executed, our OFWs separated from their families causing the decay of our family units. The pandak only cares about the remittances!

Malacanang is a den of liars, especially with bansot and fatboy pidal at the helm. I do not believe every word that they spew.

Liar indeed at SUPER YABANG! Imagine, giving billions of dollars to ASEAN samantalang more that 60% ng sarili niyang population eh GUTOM! Hypocite talaga!!! Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and China are all richer countries than the Philippines. This pandak is living “high”. Shame on this slimy woman! Everytime I hear her squeky voice, I immediately turn off my tv. Masisira lang nag araw ko. Besides, I know that everything she says eh puro YABANG lang. The truth of the matter is she is a BULLSHIT, ILLEGAL and SQUATTING PRESIDENT!

The unified anti-bansot military organization has now a clear leader in the person of BGen Lim.

What is Erap waiting for? All he has to do is throw his support to Lim and within 6 months that bansot will be out of malacanang.

  37. parasabayan parasabayan

Pandak must have displeased the US so much that the US is virtually releasing all the derogatory articles on her governance. Unless the US will FUMIGATE her out of Malacanang, magsusumiksik yan dyan!

  38. parasabayan parasabayan

It has to be someone who is not detained. GLim can only inspire but the execution of booting the bansot out will have to be from those who are free to mount a revolt.

Parang ganoon itong Pinas ngayon.

Chi: That’s why pawnshops in Las Vegas are the best places to buy jewelries, don’t be surprised if you see some of your friend’s precious metals being sold, wink.. wink…

PSB: 85%/15% figure maybe includes table games and kenos. When the economy was at it’s peak, profit for all Nevada casino SLOT MACHINES ONLY was consistently floating at One Billion a month. Same underlying principles apply that 85% in the casinos are so UGLY and 15% are indeed happy face possessed and they do feel like they’re in Eternity. But don’t be deceived coz those 15% will eventually be holding hands with those 85%. They’re just being recycled.

  41. parasabayan parasabayan

Erap is building up Lim for a political line-up. I do not know if it is leading to ousting the bansot. It may just be for political maneuvering. The way I see things, evrybody is just waiting for th 2010 elections. If the bansot blocks this election, she will be booted out like the late Marcos. Who would think that a man like Marcos would be taken out of power when he had surrounded himself with his fattened lapdogs too. But in fairness, no matter what people say, Marcos still did the most for the Philippines! Eh itong si pandak, what has she done so far? MAGNAKAW, MAGSINUNGALING at ngayon may bago pa, MAGYABANG!

  42. parasabayan parasabayan

True Blu, for every dollar one plays, only 15 cents go back to the gamblers. The profit margin of the casinos is humungos! This is why casino owners can afford to expand their empire like mushrooms. This is why he is seen with Pacman a lot coz he is a big gambler and also he wants to be a gambling business partner of Pacman!

I lost $10 in Las Vegas ten years ago, I promised myself never to waste my money on such shits again. We plan to visit Macau this year or early next year and other Asian capitals, too, if plans remain as is.
Reading your description and experiences in Macau made me a lil’ bit curious. I think I’ll be more excited seeing Macau than LV!
Ellen: Yes, non-gamblers like some of us can still enjoy and appreciate the beautiful things shown in “negative” paradise such as Macau or Las Vegas!

  44. etcetera etcetera

That’s what I was thinking too? Why this anonymous person or persons did not reveal themselves before giving journalist free plane tickets, free hotel stay, and free pocket money?

The only reason that I can think of why they did not reveal themselves is because if you know up front that the donor of this free travel is from pidal mafia then you will surely reject the free trip.

Once you find out that anonymous donor of free trips and it came from pidal mafia connections, the journalist who took the free trips will not be able to write objectively on their piece, concerning pidal crimes.

  45. etcetera etcetera

BGen Lim is a strong presidential contender. Erap should support Lim as President because the unified anti-bansot military is behind him.

The only reason why comelec was able to do massive cheating in 2004 was because of the help of military/pnp. Now, if Lim is running for President and with the support of the masa of Erap, then the unified anti-bansot military has a capability to neutralize those pro-arroyo military/pnp. BGen Lim should win.

Reminds me that ages ago, my niece and my favourite, asked me that she wanted to see Macau together with the Nuns in her Schools at Siena Catholic for a few days, four or five days and I said go ahead and she enjoyed her first out of country trip and here how she looks at that time in Macau:

Erap is not greedy for power. He had it all. Believe me, he’s not running again in 2010. It’s a political strategy. A good player doesn’t show his card. It’s like playing poker. Erap has already a list of senatorial candidates with Ted Failon, Adel Tamano, Roilo Golez among them. Including Gen. Lim is easy. We would know that late this year.

….Gen. Lim was involved in most of the past coups; but I’m not sure if he participated in Edsa 2 against Erap. But anyway, Erap can always forgive Lim like he did to many of his enemies. That’s Erap.

Notice how Pacman keeps on speaking English these days and even learning the British accent in anticipation of his fight with Hatton. No matter how Pacman tries, his thick Bisayan accent shows.

Japan is more aptly called “Land of the Fluctuating Yen.” At least, kahit papaano may security kami dito.

You bet, Rose!

Guess what? Over in my new community, I don’t introduce myself as one from the Philippines. I can actually get away with just saying my mother and siblings are in the USA. Akala nila ngayon Japanese-American ako, and they all want to be friends with me.

He can do much better still! He has the money to hire the best mentors. His children are enrolled in International schools. The only thing I do not like with him is his association with the gambling lord sabit swingson. In gambling, even protitution is a known partner. Pacman has his beautiful young children. As for Pacman, he’s trying hard to be a foreigner and speaks like one; but his looks deny him that. Imagine, he named his new baby “Queen Elizabeth”. Why not Queen Gloria?

Pacman is very part of Singson’s syndicate. The two have ventured into many businesses, legal or illegal. Even if his mom is now called Pacmom. Look at how his mom wears and behaves these days. His mom only speaks English now. No matter how she tries to look a social matron, again her looks deny her that. Pacman must be careful in his association and friendship with Singson. The club, Devil’s Pub was owned by basketball coach/reatauranteur Tito Eduque known for his all-white attires.

This particular New Year’s Eve, my brother burned his hands playing with firecracker powder that as soon as we left the hospital, we decided to pass by the casino to fetch my Mom before the midnight pandemonium. My Dad then changed P20 into slot coins and divided it among us. It was my first experience with the one-armed bandit and luckily, my five coins won me 42 coins. I kept the tokens as souvenir and never redeemed the cash. I only lost it when a fire gutted own our old house.

On the back of my mind, last summer there was a heated but friendly discussions at the Philippines Forum moderated by Miss Jane Abao – the topic was: Brazenly insensitive with a P140,000 dress. This was about Ate Gluerilla showboating her dress which costs P140K. If I remember correctly, one of my few comments went this way: “putting a price tag of your possession/s was a way for some people to only BRAG to compensate for their low self-esteem and insecurities”.
Some people’s blood pressure rocketed and comments started firing in all directions. Nonetheless, it was a good discussion as I’ve said earlier.

  94. Japanese car are not selling in America Pareng TrueBlue. This boils me down because someone loves to brag so much about Japan without being transparent,”Well,I look good in the mirror” Hahahaha!

The truth is Japanese are now shopping at second-hand stores; residents in upper-class districts comb through their neighbors’ trash for used furniture. Potential entrepreneurs, the of the future, are doomed to remain dreamers: the banking system is so swamped with the remembrance of debts past it doesn’t have the money—or will—to help new businesses get off the drawing board. For the first time since the end of WW II, Japan is facing the concept of personal and corporate obsolescence. Most small time Japanese wholesaler are giving up there faltering business and now peddles $5 lunch of bento boxes in Tokyo’s depressed financial district. They have no choice but to start over. Even, it seems, if that means leaving the country. Laid-off Japanese engineers are now lining up for jobs in China. Salarymen work, live cheaply and send paychecks home to support their families—much like the world’s other economic nomads, the Philippine maids of Hong Kong. They’ll look at a job in China even though the pay is half what they were making in Japan it sounds very sad. But they’re desperate.

Hope Japan will not go back to it’s oldest profession the—- “Turko Business “.

Maybe,You want to hear this Japanese Joke.
Mr. Suzuki the husband of Mrs.Toyota goes to his local bank branch, rents a safety deposit box and locks away some cash. The next day he comes back and takes some money out. He does this again and again. Finally an exasperated bank manager asks, “Suzuki-san, why don’t you open a bank account?”

Suzuki-san responds: “I’d love to. What collateral are you offering?”

The banks are Japan’s immediate problem, the weakest part of the whole crumbling structure. The essential question now: are they chronically metastasized with bad loans—very sick but possibly curable—or are the banks on the point of complete implosion?

The Yen is weak, make Japan’s exports a little more affordable, buy a little time. Most people consider that a bankrupt solution for a nearly bankrupt nation. A weak yen certainly won’t help the wide-eyed man with a two-day growth of beard wandering the tunnels connecting subway stations in central Tokyo. “HELP ME,” reads a sign around his neck. “RESTRUCTURED.” Same in America, on the exit ramp of the freeway a man is carrying a sign “HELP ME,UNEMPLOYED and HUNGRY” on the other intersection a homeless Nam vet also carry a sign, while on the side of the stoplight Emiliano is carrying a bunch of roses and a bag of peanut selling it to the motorist.

Maybe, grizzy can answer this question if she’s really aware of what’s going on in Japan right now.

  96. Tru Blue:

Nope there was no yabang in what I stated above. It was a fact to show that despite the publicity about recession in Japan, people here can still afford to buy the basic necessities because they save, and car is now a necessity especially where I now live.

The mentioning of the price is just to show that the people someone in this blog mentioned to belittle the capabity of the Japanese to survive sans the harakiri are in fact in the minority, for as my neighbor says, “only the lazy ones get hungry!!!”

850,000 yen is cheap according to my sister compared to how much the said car costs in the USA.

So, please stop labelling me with the pandak because I am not in her league. For one thing, I don’t steal. I earn my keep honestly, buy things with my savings, and never bother anyone for my livelihood, not even my family in the USA. And setting aside modesty, whatever I have in excess, I share with the less fortunate.

You don’t know me so stop being so presumptuous, because you are not in fact my judge.

  97. The yen is weak, so what? I have not seen anyone getting food stamps or buying things in some food banks yet because the Japanese in fact are not dependent on foreign remittances. Also, traditionally, people here would rather commit suicide than ask help from anyone, not even the next of kin, and be at the mercy of their benefactors.

Malaking kahihiyan ang mamalimos dito as a matter of fact although the government is duty-bound to give welfare to the deserving. Right now, however, most of those asking for welfare are Filipino women leaving their husbands, and getting custody of their children to qualify for such welfare.

Why do I know this? My Japanese uncle said so. The first thing that I learned from him was that I should not be too dependent on anyone! Puedeng duraan sa mukha ang nagpapalimos and they cannot spit back! That’s the social rule!!!

  98. Cocoy: residents in upper-class districts comb through their neighbors’ trash for used furniture.

    ******

Your slip of ignorance Cocoy is showing! Apparently, you know nothing!

So what if people here buy a lot of things in the recycle shop now? At least, they are still buying not gathering garbage as many foreigners here are apt to do because customarily most Japanese would rather throw their old furnitures, etc. when they transfer to a new house especially with those cheapy things from China and even Sweden that are no different in fact in prices from those sold in recycle shops.

Throwing old furnitures, etc. is no longer free as a matter of fact. When we want to discard big objects in the house, we call the garbage office and pay for the disposal of those items that are in turn bought by recycle shops that clean and restore them to their original state unlike Goodwill in the States that sell old things as is.

And we can kick our PM out if he does not try to improve the situation the country is in now na kasalanan din ng mga kano as a matter of fact!!!

  99. A lot many foreigners in fact live in the upper middle class (posh) district of Japan. They must be the ones collecting the garbage that are supposed to be collected by the garbage office since everyone throwing big objects have to pay for them.

On the other hand, an American friend of mine, posted ads on bulletin boards in supermarkets, etc. frequented by foreigners for people who want to have some of her possessions for a minimal fee as her husband’s company went bankrupt and they had to go back to the USA. Reason was she did not want to pay the garbage fee. Apparently, the husband’s company would not pay for moving fees for those items she wanted to dispose of.

  100. Tru Blu:

I’m not competing with Cocoy! So, don’t bother wasting your time and energy trying to understand anything, especially about me, especially because we are supposed to be discussing issues not any personality.

Nakakabaduy sa totoo lang! Not my type! It’s one thing I actually hate—being compared to anyone because I am me, and I cannot be anyone else nor be like anybody!

I say what I want to say, take it or leave it, because the truth is I know my right, and that is, I have the right to speak and express myself especially on things that I am very passionate about. One thing I make sure though is I don’t talk about things I don’t know about. Otherwise, I ask, and not pretend to know what I don’t know. Mahirap magdunung-dunungan kasi, tapos gago din pala!!! 😛

  101. On the other hand, the ignoramuses must have watched the CNN feature of the yearly “boro ichi” held in January each year since 1578 for four days in Setagaya, one of Tokyo’s posh district.

There is in fact a bit of history there, and not just for want of cheapy things that people go there, recession or no recession. Rather, majority of those who go there each year actually look for antiques that some entrepreneurs can even sell for higher prices elsewhere.

In short, they buy things there not because people here are as hard up as many Americans now, but for love of things of antiquity, especially those rare Japanese traditional crafts. There are a lot many entrepreneurs who go there, too, looking for objects they can reform and sell at exorbitant prices.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

    Re “such an ugly sight”

    I’m not surprised.

Gambling is like a drug and can be addictive and like any drug addiction, it produces a terrible effect on a person, mentally and physically.

I think gambling is one of the worst scourges on people — it turns even the most decent people into mental and emotional wrecks.

Save of course Gloria’s pig husband who gambles away the money that HE DIDN’t earn because it’s money he stole from the people.

  104. Hang on, am not saying Gloria’s pig husband is decent — on the contrary, he’s a most indecent animal, just that I don’t believe this baboy can be turned into a mental wreck because the money he gambles away is people’s money, money that he loots through bribes, overpricing, and kickbacks — and of course, all he has to do is to steal some more to gamble some more.

  105. Pardon my saying this Ellen, but I think Macau and Las Vegas (the strip) are sodom and gomorha, they are two of the most tasteless, most obnoxious and most hideous places in the world.

We are not in school no more competing for a DICTORIAN award, whoever be the VALEDICTORIAN or the DUMB-DICTORIAN we need to roll the DICE.

Cocoy, you can be the valedictorian and Tru Blue the salutatorian. He shall keep saluting you. Some countries have left steering wheels while others right. I hope one day a country produces one that’s in the middle so that two passengers could sit on both sides.

BE, now you’re admitting you’re a druggy. The hallucination aptly applies to you. As I’ve said before, I’ve never learned anything from your posts, no pun intended.

What beliefs and idealogies of Grizzy did I mishandled? I simply alluded to her placing a price tag on her new wheels.
She could have responded with humility BUT as usual, you and her are so PIKON. Relax. Listen again to Fred Ponopio yodelling and you’ll have vitality creeping into your being.
Or get your head out of the sandbox and be a good blogger.

Pareng Cocoy is right leaning, and I fully supported Obama. He was throwing darts at me and did the same to him. He had different beliefs about Obama and so was I with McCain.
Did we got personal with each other?? Hell f**k NO! That’s something you and others need to learn, it’s not too late. Argue and debate profusely, when the sun sets, shake hands – go your merry way, hug the wife knowing you had a good or bad day. Manyana es utra dia meaning tomorrow is just another day.

  120. I never been a Valedictorian bitchevil even during my school days. I was always in the last section and sit at the back of row four. My teachers don’t care if I cheated on the exam or not as long as I paid my matriculation in full. I don’t even carry any pad paper and books going to school, only a blue and black ink of BIC ball pen and a single folded notebook in half on my back pocket.I only raised my hand if I go to the restroom, if my teachers ignored me I rather wait for the bell ring for recess. I can tell you I was top ten from the bottom list of the 300 graduates. One thing I can be proud of, was that ;I was elected as the school student president without posting any printed campaign stickers on the school bulletin board. The students does the campaigning for me while I was with my gang of friends drinking San Miguel beer at the age of 15. I garnered almost 91% of votes and all my teachers started to hate me because their pet-student lost, they made her delivered the Valedictory address, while the Governor pinned me my Gold Medal for student leadership award.I Was the DUMB-DICTORIAN.Can You imagine how smart were my classmates was!

  121. Oh Yeah! we are having a class reunion this coming June 13 in California and at the same time they still want me to be their president. Most of them are now professionals and they still consulted me for advice.I need to buy an elegant attire for $99 on sale at the Warehouse.Hahahaha!

  122. Don’t get me wrong $99 is only a uniform of waiting tables at “LA BISTRO.”

Good for you Pareng Cocoy you had BIC, I settled with Mongol Lapis and keeps breaking in my behind pockets, CID educational school was always happy, kept buying their mongols.

Speaking of cars, never owned a Japanese car. In my lifetime only drove a camaro, vette, and now SL500 – no price tags on these as they’re just regular cars but all packed powah!

Your Toyota/Suzuki analogy is very good. Should get a safe deposit box soonest just to put a dagger to my banker’s heart. My checking account keeps reflecting an interest per month of .13, .16, sometimes one digit preceded by zero. I’m lucky if my account yields 2bucks at year’s end.
    Just a sad thought.

  124. I like your vette Pareng Trublue, speaking of camaro,I am rebuilding the engine on my 73 model 350 engine.Machine shop honed the cylinder wall and balance the crankshaft and cam,new bearing pistons and kit. It’s been a year now since I assembled the engine, one piston busted the oil pan when I started it and run it for almost 30 minutes after i put it back with wide open throttle,Know what? I forgot to put engine oil.Dammittt me.I pulled the engine again, hope this time I learned my lesson.

It’s time for me to pick my JR in school and talk to you later.

  125. BE, Grizzy, Tru-Blu, pwede ba tama na? Nobody enjoys your petty quarrels.

Another post about it, I’ll erase.

  126. Anna: “Pardon my saying this Ellen, but I think Macau and Las Vegas (the strip) are sodom and gomorha, they are two of the most tasteless, most obnoxious and most hideous places in the world.”

You are right, Anna. The classic veneer (fake Venice)cannot hide the ugliness of the industry. It’s actually tacky.

  127. chi chi

I like the old grand Las Vegas when the casino moguls have not yet copied Europe, when one could really enjoy a good entertainment and walk about. Ngayon, nakakatawa na especially when it’s made a reunion spot of Pinas koraps whenever Pakyaw has a fight.

  128. parasabayan parasabayan

Chi, I never miss going to the Old Las Vegas. To me that is the Las Vegas I know.

  129. MPRivera MPRivera

    tama ‘yan!

    nakupo, lagot!

When the Colorado River stops it’s flow, Las Vegas and the entire Southern Nevada is basically gone to the dogs, dead.
Why so many people go to LV and gamble knowing they’re in the 85% losers category tells us they belong to the winning 15%.

The Old Las Vegas (downtown) retains the Mafia Casinos of old BUT the proliferations of the millions of Jeremy’s and Spunky’s within the vicinity is a scary sight day and night.
Almost forgot, Jeremy is a cockroach and Spunky a rat. These pests are waiting for the arrival of PacYaw’s entourage and travel a short distance to the strip to rub elbows and have a good time with Pakyaw’s alipores.
