Jullie Yap of the Manila Bulletin, Mandy Navasero of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and myself had a magical experience last weekend courtesy of someone we don’t know and we haven’t met.
Through a friend who want to remain anonymous, we were extended an invitation for a three-day visit to Macau. Accommodation: The Venetian.
Off we went last Thursday. I’ve never been to the The Venetian Las Vegas but those who have been there say the one in Macau is much, much bigger.
“Big” is too small a word to describe the The Venetian. Inaugurated two years ago, it’s grand, sprawling, overwhelming. It’s website describes the area as “equivalent to 56 football fields and large enough to hold close to 100 Boeing 747 jumbo jets. “
The Venetian is actually a make-believe city of Venice in Macau complete with the famous canal. And of course, the gondola. If you take the gondola ride, you will be serenaded by a baritone accompanied by a guitarist. I noticed it’s a Filipino (one of the more than 2,000 Filipinos employed in the hotel) who was the gondola entertainer. But if you want an Italian singer, the hotel can accommodate you as what one Filipina did. All throughout the day, Vivaldi’s music is played.
According to a report, the choice of Venice as the resort’s theme came from the wife of Sheldon Adelson, chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, which owns and operates The Venetian hotels. Mrs. Adelson reportedly fell in love with Venice where they had their honeymoon.
The attention to details in re-creating Venice is amazing. At the food court you have the Venice sky as ceiling. Through creative lighting, the time of the day is simulated. The residential apartments along the grand canal are re-created complete with the curtains, flower boxes, and lighted rooms.
All the flowers are fresh. Cymbidium, imported from Holland, adorn the receptions desks. Phalynopsis orchids are all over the place.
We were supposed to meet our host for dinner Thursday night. Instead we were met by two of his female staff , Ashley and Carol, who said the boss had an important meeting. The ladies hosted us at the Lei Garden. It was the best 10-course dinner I ever partook. I imagine it was the most expensive. We had shark’s fin soup.
For Friday evening’s activity, we were given tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s Zaia, about a young girl who dreamed of being an astronaut. It was a mesmerizing experience as we soared with Zaia to outer space. Cirque de Soleil trapeze was was simply breathtaking.
During the day, we explored other Macau’s attractions. Jullie said it’s a must that we eat Macanese food, combination of Portuguese and Chinese cuisines. The front desk guy told us to go to “Fernando’s restaurant” and even wrote for us the restaurant’s name in Chinese. Per his instruction, we took the shuttle bus to The Sands hotel on the other side of Macau (I said other side because we crossed an ocean through a long bridge) . From The Sands, we took a cab. We showed the driver the piece of paper with the Chinese characters. The driver nodded smiling which indicated that he knew the place.
Off we went to Fernando’s. We crossed the bridge again. We wondered, if Fernando’s is on the other side, that’s where we came from. Why did we have to go to Sands in the first place? It was hard getting an explanation from someone whose knowledge of English is limited to nodding of his head and with our Chinese limited to shie-shie (thank you).
Fernando’s , a quaint restaurant beside Hac Sa beach in Coloane is worth the trip. Their grilled fish and bean dishes are unforgettable.
Fishermen from Fujian and farmers of Guangdong in China were the first known settlers of Macau when it was still Ou Mun, which means trading gate. In the 1500, the place came into the administrative control of Portugal. It reverted to China in 1999.
Known for Stanley Ho’s casino even under Portugal, China has developed the 29.2 square kilometer area into a gambling capital. Its number one customers are Chinese from the mainland. It’s accessible by air and by ferry from Hongkong. Everyday, busloads of visitors from mainland China fill up the Macau casinos. There are thousands and thousands of them.
There are also thousands of Filipinos working in Macau. But one of the The Venetian staff said there have been layoffs the past months. The global financial crisis has reached the shores of Macau and cast some gloom in the otherwise clear blue skies of fake Venice.
We asked a bellboy if it was true that Mike Arroyo was in Macau with a female companion , not Gloria Arroyo, last month. He said, Mike Arroyo does not stay in The Venetian. He added, “He stays in Stanley Ho’s Grand Lisboa.”

I won’t starve for at least 90 days dahil may stock akong pagkain for more than 3 months. Recommendation nga sa church namin one year, but I don’t have the space to do so. Buti na lang may built-in storage sa ilalim ng bahay ko. Malamig pa kaya preserved ang mga pagkain. Gulat nga ako kasi kahit isang buwan na mukhang sariwa pa iyong mga gulay na binili ko. Just recently, I bought a Honda Life (Fine) for about 850,000 yen all inclusive (insurance, registration, navigation, etc.) It is a new model, and I bought it from a Toyota dealer.

We never touched a single casino chip.
We only entered the casino to pass through from one end to the other. Even that, I had to walk fast because of the smoke. Because of the huge area one has to cover to get to the other side, sumasakit talaga ang dibdib ko sa usok.
The restrooms near the casino even have ashtrays. That’s what i didn’t like.
If you want to see ugly and lonely people, go to the casinos in the morning. I saw that depressing atmosphere in Las Vegas. It’s the same in Macau.

You can’t escape them. No matter where you turn in the casinos, you will find people: big people, little people, fat people, skinny people, pretty people, ugly people, smart people and dumb people. You’ll find people moaning and groaning, cheering and leering; happy and miserable. Indeed, if you went to public schools, you are probably very familiar with all the types of people you can meet in the casinos.
Some casino gambling expert sometimes wonder why so many casino gamblers make such horrendous bets. Why, they ask, do so many casino players play games and make wagers where the house has double-digit edges on them? This bizarre behavior confuses some gamblers. They can’t fathom how someone can contentedly or discontentedly lose bundles of money – and keep coming back to lose even more.

Now, if you are playing a slot or video poker machine, the only time you deal with these people is when they bump into you or hover over you wanting to snatch your machine. Sometimes you can smell some of them as they make their way past you in the slot aisles. But you usually don’t interrelate. You are just aware they are around.
However, when you are playing the table games such as blackjack, craps, roulette or others, the dumb-dictorians make their presence known in many off-putting ways. They engage in dumb conversations; make awfully unfunny jokes; complain about their luck; tell boring stories about their children or grandchildren. And they usually play horribly.

The land area of Macau is only 3 times the size of Boracay and yet, it is one of the richest cities in the world.
In 2006, its gaming revenue surpassed that of the Las Vegas strip, and gaming-related taxes accounted for 75% of total government revenue. GDP is around $37K.
Influx of tourist is 90% more than the Philippines. Most of their tourists comes from neighboring China, the most populated country in the world. Can our country catch up or get close to Macau’s tourism? Yes, since it has more to offer but it has to make lots of improvements.
I can only say about our experience in The Venetian but one impressive thing about it is their efficiency. Capital E. Just the signage. The place is huge but it’s easy to find your way. Malalayo lang but all your have to do is follow the signage, It’s everywhere from one end to another, in between, you can find the place you are looking for.
In the restaurants, there’s always one who can attend to you. Unlike here in Manila when catching the attention of the waiter is already an effort.
Arroyo: 500,000 job openings abroad
MANILA, Philippines – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has announced that 500,000 jobs were waiting for Filipinos overseas, as she stressed the importance of matching workers’ skills to the demand abroad.
Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said these were actual job orders for Filipinos, mainly in the construction sector in the Middle East, Canada, and Australia.

I used to frequent HK in the late 70s and mid-80s but I never went to Macau. Apparently Macau just recently became famous.
My cousin just went there too two weeks ago. He is usually my partner bringing visitors to Las Vegas frequently so I asked him to describe Macau. He said it is a mini Las Vegas. I guess it is much better in its ambiance becasue it is in an Island.
The gambling industry makes 85% profit! Only 15% goes back to the gamblers. So, with this profit margin, the gambling industry may have temporary set backs with the recession but it will come back with a BANG! Gambling is a way of life for some people.
I do not gamble at all. I put my money in a calculated risk. But I enjoy looking at newly built theme hotels and shows when I go Las Vegas.
I will definitely like to visit Macau one of these days.

The only reason that I can think of why they did not reveal themselves is because if you know up front that the donor of this free travel is from pidal mafia then you will surely reject the free trip.

Pacman seems to have a focus in his life. I am starting to see that. He is being mentored now to speak English better. Quite frankly, he can speak English much better now. The first time I entered a casino, I was 4 y.o. Minors are prohibited in the gaming area but since my mom was a Table Supervisor, (later, Pit Boss) the humongous bouncer allowed us in. The casino was a backroom operation, just like many others in the Dewey (now Roxas) boulevard strip, right before martial law. So what if people here buy a lot of things in the recycle shop now? At least, they are still buying not gathering garbage as many foreigners here are apt to do because customarily most Japanese would rather throw their old furnitures, etc. when they transfer to a new house especially with those cheapy things from China and even Sweden that are no different in fact in prices from those sold in recycle shops.
Throwing old furnitures, etc. is no longer free as a matter of fact. When we want to discard big objects in the house, we call the garbage office and pay for the disposal of those items that are in turn bought by recycle shops that clean and restore them to their original state unlike Goodwill in the States that sell old things as is.
Sabi nga, tignan mo muna ang muta mo sa mata, bago ka tumingin ng muta ng iba! At least, dito, di pa naman kumakain ng kaning baboy (pagpag) gaya ng ginagawa sa Pilipinas! And we can kick our PM out if he does not try to improve the situation the country is in now na kasalanan din ng mga kano as a matter of fact!!!
A lot many foreigners in fact live in the upper middle class (posh) district of Japan. They must be the ones collecting the garbage that are supposed to be collected by the garbage office since everyone throwing big objects have to pay for them.
On the other hand, an American friend of mine, posted ads on bulletin boards in supermarkets, etc. frequented by foreigners for people who want to have some of her possessions for a minimal fee as her husband’s company went bankrupt and they had to go back to the USA. Reason was she did not want to pay the garbage fee. Apparently, the husband’s company would not pay for moving fees for those items she wanted to dispose of.

There is in fact a bit of history there, and not just for want of cheapy things that people go there, recession or no recession. Rather, majority of those who go there each year actually look for antiques that some entrepreneurs can even sell for higher prices elsewhere.
In short, they buy things there not because people here are as hard up as many Americans now, but for love of things of antiquity, especially those rare Japanese traditional crafts. There are a lot many entrepreneurs who go there, too, looking for objects they can reform and sell at exorbitant prices.

I never been a Valedictorian bitchevil even during my school days. I was always in the last section and sit at the back of row four. My teachers don’t care if I cheated on the exam or not as long as I paid my matriculation in full. I don’t even carry any pad paper and books going to school, only a blue and black ink of BIC ball pen and a single folded notebook in half on my back pocket.I only raised my hand if I go to the restroom, if my teachers ignored me I rather wait for the bell ring for recess. I can tell you I was top ten from the bottom list of the 300 graduates. One thing I can be proud of, was that ;I was elected as the school student president without posting any printed campaign stickers on the school bulletin board. The students does the campaigning for me while I was with my gang of friends drinking San Miguel beer at the age of 15. I garnered almost 91% of votes and all my teachers started to hate me because their pet-student lost, they made her delivered the Valedictory address, while the Governor pinned me my Gold Medal for student leadership award.I Was the DUMB-DICTORIAN.Can You imagine how smart were my classmates was!

I forgot to put engine oil.Dammittt me.I pulled the engine again,hope this time I learned my lesson.

I like the old grand Las Vegas when the casino moguls have not yet copied Europe, when one could really enjoy a good entertainment and walk about. Ngayon, nakakatawa na especially when it’s made a reunion spot of Pinas koraps whenever Pakyaw has a fight.
