“Why not Binay for President? Meron siyang kakayahan bilang lider, may talino mass appeal at tibay ng loob (guts).

“Many times in the history of mankind, it’s one rare defining moment that catapults a person to the highest post. Mandela. Mao. Magsaysay. John F. Kennedy (PT 109) and FVR (Edsa I)”

Tama.

Di ba may kasabihan tayo, “Whom God wants to destroy, he first makes them mad.”

Has Malacañang created a Little Ninoy out of Makati’s Binay?

    By Alejandro LichaucoANALYSIS

    THE DAILY TRIBUNE
    10/19/2006

To liken Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay to the late Sen. Ninoy Aquino might, on first impression, draw nothing but amused chuckles from seasoned political watchers. Binay is far from being the national figure that Ninoy was. But then, one might consider that the comparison is being made in the context of a very specific situation whose main feature is an ongoing search by the political public in general and the opposition (both civilian and military) in particular, for a figure who could credibly stand as an acceptable alternative to GMA.

Until recently, no such figure appeared on sight and it has been generally conceded that GMA’s strength lies in the weakness of the opposition and that the core of that weakness, in turn, lies in the failure of the various opposition factions to reach a consensus on just who their “maximum leader” should be.

If the long expected and hoped-for military coup of disillusioned elements in the military has failed to materialize, it is because those elements have not been able to identify the figure, whether military or civilian, around whom they can unify and mobilize.

The decision of Malacañang to finally dispose of Binay politically by suspending him from office could turn out to be one of those fatefully historic decisions on a comparatively trivial matter which turned the tide of events, the “tipping point” as it were, in the political equation which so far had remained static.

Why should this be so? The question is appropriate because Binay, as earlier observed, certainly isn’t a Ninoy. Ninoy wasn’t only a senator of the land but he loved to talk and expound on national issues and if he was a national figure it wasn’t so much because he was a senator but because he displayed a vision that was national in scope. In the specific circumstances of martial law, as the nation searched for an alternative to Marcos, Ninoy emerged as a “natural.” He was a senator who certainly didn’t think like a mayor or even a governor or even a member of the House. In that sense, to liken him to Binay, or Binay to him, might seem, on first hearing, a rather absurd comparison which would trivialize Ninoy.

But then, all that could be past tense and for a number of specially important and timely reasons.

First, Binay stands vigorously identified with the GMA Resign movement and heads a national coalition committed to forcing GMA out of office. When you combine that with the fact that he presides politically over the most prestigious and wealthiest constituency in the Philippines, drawing his strength not — repeat not — from the privileged class but precisely from the underclass, then what you have isn’t a common mayor but a mayor who definitely contains in himself the potential of transforming into a national figure. He is of the underclass, identified with the underclass, but somehow managing to govern a constituency identified, locally and internationally, with the class of privilege. And that’s political feat enough.

Another reason has to do with the hunger of the times. These are times, as said earlier, when the nation is desperately hungry for an alternative national leader to replace the incumbent. That hunger might well have been put to a swift and sudden end when Malacañang decided to force Binay out of office. In these times, that decision, no matter how well founded on the merits, assuming that it was, could spell only one word, and that is persecution. The persecution of one vigorously identified with a coalition of nationally consequential elements that want so much to see GMA out and searching for the “maximum leader” among them while vying for the title of maximum.

But beyond the reasons cited, there is Binay’s leadership style. In the days just past, he has shown that when boxed into a corner he can turn even more defiant — willing to do battle, and do battle literally to the death. Letting the word out that he is a reserve colonel in the Armed Forces, he has donned his Marine battle uniform and sported an Uzi, to make his point clear. Meaning, he isn’t just a little politician but a military man as well, prepared to take on the entire political and military establishment with his Uzi, and to die in his uniform and in his office at that. Prepared, that is, to do a Custer’s last stand.

Well, what do you do with such guy — in a time like this?

Isn’t that precisely what the Resign GMA movement — if not the entire nation, for that matter — is looking for? Someone who is prepared to do a Custer’s last stand against GMA’s force, no matter how overwhelming? Prepared, in brief, to die for his cause? The irony is that Binay wouldn’t have emerged as such a figure if the Palace didn’t think of doing him in politically. But it did, and that is what could do in GMA, finally.

It was, if this piece may say so, an incredibly stupid decision, as stupid as doing Ninoy in, and in the process, created a Ninoy out of Binay.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD ANALYSIS AND I GUESS THE DOWNFALL OF GMA IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER…JUST LIKE THE APPROACHING CHRISTMAS SEASON!!!

If things go the way they are going now, there will be no presidential elections to talk about in 2010. Something drastic must happen before then before Binay or any other hopeful can start talking of presidential ambitions.
The defining moment for Binay could be that he can pick up the cudgels for injustice and have the courage to lead the simmering upheaval for OUST GLORIA movement – NOW. These are the times that call for leader/leaders and Binay might yet fill that bill. Unless Gloria is ousted, there will be no elections, and if there are, the results will not reflect the will of the people.

Well said firefly..I agree with what you said. Have you seen how eager jdv was in shaking the hands of Cheap Justice Panganiban and the other “magicstrates” during yesterday’s forum of international magistrates?

  4. Spartan Spartan

Although the “idea” of Mayor Binay as next President of the Republic of the Philippines is not that “excellent”, but it’s a “much much better” alternative than the “aleng maitim ang gilagid” in the Palace right now.

Insatiable greed and lust of wealth and power! That’s what best describe the evil couple and their minions who have been ruling the country with unparalleled thievery and evilness ever in Philippine history. They already have Pilipinas in their palm, do everything they want yet they are not still satisfied and want the small voices who don’t agree with them to be stifled and shut up.
Take the case of Mayor Binay. The case stemmed from a graft complaint by a political opponent and a known loser by the name of (Fake as in puwet ng Baso) Brillante. Binay, as a lawyer knows his laws and asked for evidence, but as reported, they don’t have any evidence of wrong doing against him, but still insist on suspending him. Talagang pwersahan at bastusan sa Bastusan Republic. There are no rules of evidence, no law, and they are above the law. In other words they are the law and whatever they wish, it shall be done. But, who knows, there might be karma on all of these. You can not hide anything from Someone up there to whom you have to account for every act you do in your lifetime.
But, still, often times, I wonder what kind of creatures are these? The way they act and treat people especially those perceived as enemies tells me that they are not humans. It’s really amazing how they can go on and on day in and day out, night after night without being bothered by their conscience.

    Binay for President?..
i say.. “Aye, Sir!” to that..

I think by now, we have now estaklished within ourselves and to the readers of this blog how serious and how discussions are being done here intelligently, so my suggestion is huawg na lang nating pansinin ung mga nang-gugulo and trying to create a mess out of a well-mannered discussions that we are having here..

those nuissance are here para manggulo and they will say anything and do anything para magulo tayo or malito tayo or inisin tayo.. and they will try to make a “non-sense” discussion out of our purely “well-behaved” discussions para lang mawalan tayo ng gana.. so please, let us be firm and just focus on our belief and on what we are fighting for..

and besides, bait ba sila nandito at ginugulo tayo?.. kasi we are making sense and takot sila na dumami tayo…

  25. Come to think of it, the empty pots and pans will be symbolic enough of the dire poverty Filipinos are experiencing now that even topnotchers in the medical board exam would opt to go overseas where they can live quite comfortably and their skills better appreciated even lamentably as domestic helpers tagged as “caregivers” (actually called “caretakers” in the US as my sister calls the workers in her nursing home)!

I know a lot many of the small potatoes in fact, sumusunod lang but deep within their hearts they hate doing something drastic that will bother their conscience for the rest of their life, that is, if they have not yet sold their souls to the devil like what the members of the Singaw are even admittedly calling themselves, “Legions, and they are “many” disembodied spirits indeed!!!

    God bless the rallyists!

Councilman says he should replace Binay —-ABS-CBNNews

A Makati City councilman on Thursday said that he should take over the post of suspended mayor Jejomar Binay if the city executive failed to secure a court ruling stopping Malacañan’s preventive suspension order, DZMM reported.

Armand Padilla, a councilman of Barangay Magallanes, said that instead of Rodolfo Feraren he should be designated as caretaker of the city.

Padilla said that based on the local government code only members of the city council should be named as acting mayor if the sitting official has been suspended.

Feraren is the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s National Capital Region director.

He said that DILG Secretary Rolando Puno has approved his nomination to take the position of late Makati councilor Francisco Lichauco a day before the 60-day suspension order was served against Binay, Vice-Mayor Ernesto Mercado and 16 city councilors.

He said that Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. was the one who recommended him to the position.

He added that he has already met the requirements of the Commission on Elections and Civil Service Commission. He added that he submitted the necessary documents to concerned government officials to formalize his appointment

The report said Puno’s recommendation paper to declare Padilla as the 17th councilor of the city is still awaiting the signature of Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

Binay’s camp, however, feared that Malacañan might now refuse to release Padilla’s papers in order to put an administration ally to replace the embattled mayor.

The report said that one of the people being considered for the post is a village chairman connected to the administration party.

DILG issued the preventive suspension order against Binay, Mercado and 16 city councilors based on a complaint that they had ghost or non-existent employees on the local government payroll.

Binay defied the directive by staying in his office on the 21st floor of the new Makati City Hall. He remained holed up in his office until Thursday and his supporters continue to swarm the city hall.

The mayor said he will wait for the temporary restraining order petition against his suspension that was filed before the Court of Appeals.

DILG gave Binay until Friday to leave city hall or risk being forcibly removed from the government building.

Opposition figures, including former president Corazon Aquino and former vice-president Teofisto Guingona, visited the embattled mayor at the city hall.

Binay and his fellow opposition members believe the suspension order is a form of political harassment by the administration.

—- he was elected as Mayor of Cagayan de Oro city in Misamis Oriental, ousted from the mayoral position by Marcos and reinstated after massive popular demonstrations in 1981, and arrested again in 1982 and 1985.

  39. No, patigasan. Binay should not leave his office.

  40. BINAY FOR PRESIDENT?

    Why not?

    That’s a BRILLIANT IDEA…..

    MORE BRILLIANT THAN BRILLANTE’S IDEA!

    Binay for President? Bakit hindi?

  43. artsee artsee

sobra ka artsee…no need to destroy ur riches and no need to affect ur health…things that are worth it ang dapat nating pag-aksayahan dito….ako nga ang inaatake ng asthma now after all these years..but sa pagod and pollution cz i try commute kung mas practical instead of driving, tipid pa sa gas n i am contriobuting to the economy by patronizing the jeepneys, etc…specially here in Makati…i dnt mind walking frm Don Bosco to Glorietta…when in HK i can walk frm HK Museum to MongKok or even further why not here d b?
going back to contributing to the economy, wala tayong magagawa but to do ur share in making the buying power of every spending pinoy move around. kahit ito nalang ang gawin natinin a small way para manlang mag-continue ang buhay natin kahit na we alll feel so miserable and frustrated with the presence of pandak-bruha and her minions….
to mayor binay…please continue your endeavours..no one is perfect that is true, but we need someone like you who is not afraid to stand for what is proper and right….
artsee…stop and take time to smell the roses…
