Arroyo loses cool in roundtable discussion with media

By Gil C. Cabacungan Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s infamous temper flared up
once more when she abruptly ended an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer in front of a stunned audience which included three Cabinet Secretaries and an official of the International Monetary Fund.

Click here for GMATV’s video report.

President Arroyo was nettled by repeated questions on why the benefits of a spectacular economic growth had not trickled down to the grassroots. She blew her top even before the Inquirer could finish what turned out to be the brief interview’s final question: “Isn’t it a concern for you ma’am that the billionaires during the time of Marcos and Ramos are also the same billionaires now?”

“Those are political questions, Gil. Thank you. That’s the end, thank you. I said it’s (just) follow up questions here. Thank you. And good luck to you in the Senate and in the defense. Ok thanks,” said the President who pushed back her chair before leaving. She left in a huff after saying brief thank yous to her guests that included newly appointed Presidential Chief of Staff Joey Salceda, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo Neri, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, and IMF country representative Reza Baquir.

A few minutes after leaving in a huff through the back door, the President came back and approached the Inquirer to give her answer. “We will not grow rich by pulling the rich down but by pulling the poor up.. We should be bringing up everybody else…spread the wealth that way. That’s my answer to you,” said the President who made another quick exit.

The President’s outburst was typical of her disdain of the media since she took power in 2001.

She is believed to be the least accessible of all Philippine presidents, preferring to let her Cabinet men – specifically Bunye, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and former Presidential Chief of Staff Michael Defensor — to explain and defend her government.

Bunye had informed the Inquirer about the interview just a few hours before the 2:30 pm roundtable discussion — the regular television forum used by the President to elaborate on her policies and crow about her accomplishments and gave strict orders that no political questions should be asked.

The Inquirer complied with Bunye’s request but the President apparently wanted the questions limited to the topic of the roundtable discussion which covered the country’s exit from the IMF monitoring program and the economic gains under her administration.

During the interview, the President was clearly in no mood to talk about negative things about her government.

When asked what she thought was her biggest frustration for the economy, the President replied: “I don’t talk about frustration, I only talk about blessings.” She gave a hearty laugh after.

When pressed further to explain why the blessing from good economic data had not yet trickled down to the masses, the President pointed to her guest, a small-scale entrepreneur, who just related how much her costs for her canteen had gone down. Neri pointed out that inflation fell to a six-year low last month.

The President said the reason why these benefits had not been reflected in the surveys that showed the lingering poverty and rate of hunger in the country was because “you guys (media) keep writing the negative things.” The President said “I wish you would write how the jeepney fare prices have gone down by 50 centavos and on much the gasoline price has gone down, things like that,” an exasperated President said.

She was defensive of her economic performance saying: “It’s only now that we have finally turned the corner on the economy and its only now this year that the economic reforms have allowed us to finance all the things we need, the infrastructure to bring in investments, to bring in the jobs that the people need.”

She said her government was concentrating on pro-poor programs because of criticisms that too much wealth was concentrated on too few people. The President, however, was optimistic that her economic policies, specifically heavy spending on infrastructure using increased revenues from her tax program, would deliver the goods before her term expires in 2010.

    Chi,

I witnessed the same, almost the same tantrum flare here when she was being interviewed by the Philstar correspondent who was asking tough questions particularly about extra-judicial killings.

At one point, she briskly assembled all her notes in front of her coz you could see she didn’t like it – eyes starting to squint and flashing left and right, then made a semblance of getting up but held herself back; paused, collected her wits and said, “I’m glad you asked that question!” Then rattled off.”

But the last question completely irritated her when the journalist asked her, “What about the question that was tabled in the Belgian parliament with records saying you’ve continuously ignored them and not proferred them with the slightest courtesy?”

She got up and said, “Well, I don’t know what they want” so the journalist immediately submitted a paper to her saying, “This is a copy of the minutes during a Parliamentary discussion on the issue which was submitted very officially to the Embassy but Embassy officials apparently said, they’ve been forwarded the question to Manila for reply.” She didn’t look at it but said, “I don’t know, I don’t know about that…” Hehehe!

Romulo and Bunye had bowed heads all that time.

Re Gloria’s “spread the wealth that way. That’s my answer to you,”

    Philippine Vigil,
Gloria’s, ““We will not grow rich by pulling the rich down but by pulling the poor up.. We should be bringing up everybody else…””.

The wealthy, like her, should be prepared to make extreme sacrifices ! She should lead by example.

Well, the Arrogance of the Elites. Very seldom we can see, the wealthy, the powerful personalities, be it in politics or in business, being humble or respectful when confronted by the media during interviews or asked questions not their likings.

But here is a Refreshing one: click and check it out..

  5. Whew, the above got in. The other one I posted earlier did not. Anyway, this is not the first time this cheat has done this in front of media people. Time for them to retaliate and put her where she belongs—to jail!

This woman has a face so thick she can still face the camera with her yellow buck teeth despite all the exposes of all the plundering, philandering, etc. that she and her family are involved in. Ang kapal ng apog!

  6. “The President said the reason why these benefits had not been reflected in the surveys that showed the lingering poverty and rate of hunger in the country was because “you guys (media) keep writing the negative things.” The President said “I wish you would write how the jeepney fare prices have gone down by 50 centavos and on much the gasoline price has gone down, things like that,” an exasperated President said.”

Is that what she said? No wonder the country is not picking up. The woman does not know what she says and does, maybe! Pa-cute-cute lang! Why is she blaming the poor show on the truths the media are writing about based on facts, truth and reality that even supposedly highly paid doctors now opt to become nurses overseas to earn a living and survive?

There is a word for this, Ellen. It’s called “denial!” The idiot is denying that she is the problem, the real big issue why the Philippines has logged behind more than at any time in the history of graft and corruption in the country!

Time to kick out this burot! PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

    Ate Ellen

I had a first hand experience with the much heralded bad temper of gma.

In 1993, I was a volunteer worker with the Pinatubo Relief and Rehabilition Commission. She was then a senator and member of the Coordinating Committee being from Region 3. We were in a conference room at the DBM in Malacanang to discuss the ongoing projects preparatory to fund releases. The District Engineer has just started his opening statement leading to the progress report of the dike being built near San Fernando to prevent flooding when the small girl senator immediately raised hell. She rattled off litany of inefficiencies, discrepancies, etc., without waiting for the report to finish to the extend of throwing up and scattering the written report she’s holding. Nagbubusa ang bunganga habang nangagalaiting nagsasalita at nanlilisik ang mata. The poor engineer was red-faced, grimacing, perspiring profusely and dumbfounded. Fortunately, another fast talker, then Mayor Dick Gordon of Olongapo, was also present. With his Atenean twang and speaking in rapid fire fashion, he was able to out-talked the pint sized senator. For a while, we were witnessed to a shouting match with two prominent politicians dishing out semantics I never heard before.

If you will have a chance to talk to Dinky Soliman, you will hear more stories of this sort when gma was the DSWD secretary under Erap or undersec at DTI under Cory. Her bad temper was an open-secret at ang chismis, she’s like showbiz matriarch Mother Lily of Regal Films, in a fit of anger will not hesitate to throw anything to anybody.

    Talking about Billionaires,

In 1992, the average net worth of congressmen was P8 million. By 2001, it was P28 million. In the Senate, the average net worth increased from P33 million in 1998 to P59 million in 2001. A quarter of all senators today have a net worth of above P100 million.

O, bakit nag-walk out ang bruha?! Hahahah! Blessings daw sa economy!

  10. A very reliable columnist told us in fact a story told to him by one of the kin of the Great Switik. It was a visit to the US, we were told and she did not want her step sister and brother to be with the family in a suite provided by the management of a posh hotel in New York. She had her tantrums, naglupasay sa sahig, and the parents could not control her. So, to stop her from bawling, literally gnashing her bucked teeth, and rolling on the floor, the parents had to get the brother and sister a room separate from them. Ang salbahe! No wonder the father’s staff hated this woman, and never had they voted for her despite their loyalty to the father, whose memory is being doubly tarnished by this creep calling herself “Queen of some Enchanted Kingdom”!

In short, this woman is abnormal. She should be in straight jackets and confined at some mental hospital!

Maybe nobody took notice of this column of Belinda Cunanan-Phil. Daily Inquirer, February 6. I was in the province I when read it and look it again today at the archive to be able to post it, being relevant to the topic. Baka may magalit kapag lihis sa topic.

Knowing this columnist as gma’s factutum, she surely did not divulge what’s the real score but we could assume something more serious came about. Based on the last paragraph, malamang may sinabon, may minura, may pinandilatan ng mata. Gusto pang magpalusot. Here’s the portion of the column.

“Sources in the League of Governors are amazed at how President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was able to stretch her patience and listen painstakingly to the gripes of the provincial governors at the dinner meeting she hosted for them in Malacañang last Friday.

Sixty governors showed up in what turned out to be a very frank and candid exchange. Some noted that Ms Arroyo left the dining room three times and returned within minutes, and they surmised that it was her way of holding her temper in front of her staunchest allies, especially now that elections are approaching.

Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno sent a subordinate to the meeting, but Ms Arroyo ordered Puno summoned so he could listen to the local executives’ gripes and answer them himself.

A source said Puno was red as a beet but meek as a lamb.”
    =

Aminin!!!

  12. Joeseg:

Sinabi mo pa. Pero itong si Dinky, nagtiis for the sake of the poor people that she was helping. I bet you, nakatikim din iyan ng katakot-takot na mura, etc. from the bansot.

I was in fact appalled when I saw a picture with Dinky holding an umbrella to cover the Bansot from the sun. Golly, nagmukha pa siyang tsimay! Never will a cabinet member of our P.M. here allow themselves to be subjected to such degradinig treatment as a matter of fact. Ako nga, kung uutusan ng ganoon, sasabihin ko kahit sa P.M. namin, “Sino kang mag-uutos sa akin? Nasa batas ba iyan? Bakit ako ang uutusan mo e ikaw itong aking public servant!”

Time to teach the Filipinos who they are—the bosses of these public servants!!!

PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA! Namputsa gusto pang i-trato siyang parang reyna na lahat magke-curtsy sa kaniya. Inutil!

RE: “Isn’t it a concern for you ma’am that the billionaires during the time of Marcos and Ramos are also the same billionaires now?”

The truth really hurts. The GMA cronies, the richest elite in which the Lopez clan, the Aboitiz clan, the Gozon and Duavit families, Danding Cojuangco, Manny Pangilinan and Lucio Tan are privileged members owned about a third of the country’s wealth. The latest addition is Don Jose Miguel Arroyo a.k.a. Jose Pidal. These powerful families wield their political clout to protect and expand their business empires. The quality of life has not improved under the Arroyo regime. The Filipinos continue to face harsh realities of widespread poverty, hunger and uncertainty of survival. Crony capitalism keeps Philippines’ economic stagnation.

What I’ve noticed about the above subject is the title of President repeatedly mentioned prior to Gloria’s name. Are we now conceding that mutineer bogus Gloria Arroyo is the legal president of the Philippines, not mentioning her immoral temper in which I don’t really care? Bogus Gloria is nobody! And mutineer Gloria Arroyo as far as I’m concern is not the president of the Philippines Republic. She’s just pretending to be one, when mutineer Gloria usurped and stole Malacanang, and thats undeniable facts. Hence, mutineer Gloria is a fake and not a president, not by a kilometer. Furthermore, someone tell mutineer Gloria, next time she don’t care to answer for the question asked, she can take a long walk in a short pier. That should cool her temper off for a long time. Who in the h*ll does she think she’s anyway?

  25. artsee artsee

  26. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

    Ellen:

Understood. It’s just that President title is being used very cheaply by an immoral person in which has no moral authority to be president of the Philippines. Instead, according to the law of the land and as written in the constitution, mutineer Gloria Arroyo should be prosecuted and serving time in prison or hang in Luneta Park in order to satisfy justice of the land and most importantly to set a precedent to those adventurers who wants to be President through coup d’etat or fraud election. There must be accountability, and mutineer Gloria has yet to answer for all her crimes against the people. Just don’t understand, how this could happen. Only in the Philippines, I suppose.

There is nothing subversive about this Erap movie. Nandoon lang iyong aleng alembong making pa-cute-cute to those she promoted to Bgeneral as a token of gratitude for helping her trample upon the Constitution in 2001.

She and her lackeys want this movie scrapped so there will be no evidence against her and her wannabe generals in case her government is toppled down and they are all sent to the prosecutor for proper investigations and prosecution. That will be the day!

There’s a three day International Security Conference going on right now in Munich. Our Bundeskanzlerin “Chancellor” has just finished her opening remarks. Present are leaders or representatives from different countries such as France, Italy, Spain, China, Russia, USA , Africa,
Israel and other countries. Nowhere have they ever mentioned about reprsentatives from the Philippines. Dapat dito magpapakita si Gloria Tiyanak. Nandito ang mga bigatin. O kaya ipadala niya ang kanyang mahal na Esposo(hindi para magpa-isyu ng certificate of no bank account!) at ng may maipakita man lang na he can do something good for his country! Sana ngayon ipinadala yung mga UNGAS na ‘yun, di sikat pa sila!
I viewed the so-called interview of Tiyanak. Aside from her yellow gilagid, pag nakatikom pala siya parang may nginunguya siyang NGA-NGA! Reminds me of our old women in the village way back when!

  41. Like chewing something, huh, Elvie? Chewing gum so she can have whiter teeth? Chewing like a goat huh!

Just goes to show the short woman does not have etiquette. She should go to a finishing school and learn good manners and right conduct.

When I was in grade school, I remember being taught by our teacher that chewing gum in public gatherings is unethical and bad manner. Come to think of it, hoodlums in movies are always shown chewing gums, but not people in classy gatherings!!! Wala ngang modo!

Upo nga niyan, madalas nakikitahan ng panty! I got one taken by a Manila Bulletin photo-journalist. Sagot ng ungas when criticized that she her underwear wwould always go with the dress she wore outside.

Gloria’s, ““We will not grow rich by pulling the rich down but by pulling the poor up.. We should be bringing up everybody else…””.
The wealthy, like her, should be prepared to make extreme sacrifices ! She should lead by example.

Jay: I heard this before from political charlatans. But this is the real here and now in Pinas. Our country demographics says we have a skewed number of rich and corrupt people from the business and the political sectors. Even the professions are seriously afflicted with it. To be rich is to be sick with it.

Many countries control this phenomena, this epidemic or evil affliction by hanging or jailing the incurably ill. They would not want to increase the number of the rich because of their sickness (have you ever witness cattle dying of mad cow disease? Or a country dying of corruption?) so what they do is to be very strict with the poor, to stay poor with honor and dignity. They knew what France did to their corrupt rich.

We can not see the submerged part of Erap’s ice cream. Let us know more about Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand as our neighbors. Let us visit or read more about Australia, Canada, France, Yes, even Belgium, South Korea and Japan. We might learn something from them.

And here is Gloria whose unwritten public policy is not to pull down the corrupt rich but pull up the corrupting poor and make them like her and her corrupt worshippers. It’s nothing but evil genius, to keep us up there as the most corrupt in Asia. Gloria wants us to be first world , in corruption.

Our economists not sick (read corrupt) up there or down yonder, should explain why the rich are getting richest and our poor getting poorest, every passing damned day with Gloria,

GMA is the Annabel Rama of Philippine politics.

In a lighter vein, such comment reveals the limits of Buencamino’s world view. It doesn’t include memories of the great nipples of Annabelle when she appeared as the sexiest ever as Adam’s Eve in Philippine Cinema. Adam was forgettable but Annabelle she will be forever etched in living memory of Pinoy Picassos who saw that rare movie. Eddie Gutierrez saw it and the rest is Pinoy Cinema history.

Annabelle wasn’t only a beauty, she was brains and Gillette sharp to defend issues, personal and otherwise. Even an electron microscope is not likely to show any iota of similarity between gloria and Annabelle.

Lest she be mistaken for female libel fornicator, mike arroyo’s equivalent, she should file a libel suit against Mbuencamino for soiling her name beyond redemption.

While it is true that unless one has experienced hunger, one cannot empathize w/ the very poor, Gloria should at least encourage those who have to share-& I do not mean by dole outs or money. That is much too easy for those who have. As I also said, there must be sacrifices-there must be the “giving until it hurts”. Whether it is their time, their sharing of their education, the opportunities, etc. That is what will matter most.

Have you guys seen the face on the Home Page today of the Daily Tribune? A close-up of the face that launched a tsunami of chaos for the country.

How the woman’s face has changed. Note the crow’s feet around the eyes, the blistering eyebags, the now elongated drooping proboscis, the sagging jowls, the crinkled chin, the dry wry smile. And look at those eyes. Menacing, piercing…almost devilish.

    Talking about Billionaires,

In 1992, the average net worth of congressmen was P8 million. By 2001, it was P28 million. In the Senate, the average net worth increased from P33 million in 1998 to P59 million in 2001. A quarter of all senators today have a net worth of above P100 million.

    Jay says:

I read about this in a science news magazine. I will attempt to put it in our country’s economic context. If we look at the benefits of production in Pinas, the very little increase
in production resulted in increased income of the population. From Cory onwards and worst during gloria’s time, the increases over the years if reckoned 100 per cent, the very rich got say about 85% while the poor got only 15%., What happened was the poor contributed much to production, but these was grabbed by the rich. How the rich manipulated the factors of production indicated that the rich got more than they deserved: say 68% from production, while workers got may be 11%, and the poor outside the economy lost by about 5%.

If a 40-minute parade of the population is held before the Quirino Grandstand at the Luneta with the people’s income reflected by their height, short for low income, tall for high income. People (say from ASEAN) watching the parade will get the shock of their life. It will be damned slow for a long time and very fast in seconds towards the end of the parade.

The parade watchers, would not know in the first ten minutes the parade has already started because people in the parade are so small, like ants walking in the ground.
Then the parade marchers become visible after 25 minutes. Watchers starts to see them clearly after about 35 minutes.

During the last five minutes, marchers still walk slowly until watchers saw just their shoulder, becoming taller, seeing now only their belts and tummys passing by. The last few seconds will be very fast. Parade watchers see their knees, their shoes, then only the soles of their shoes. For their heads are up in the clouds, in split second nobody sees their faces. That’s how it will be when you parade the Filipino people based on their income, at the Luneta. You only get a split second glimpse of the rich, you need NBA slow-mo to see their faces above the clouds.

La Gloria can’t muster a Dream Team in her Senatorial slate, so she does what she does best: she buys them ! Maybe that’s why the Wednesday Group is having difficulty making a decision on whose camp to join–they are proabably putting up the ante w/ La Gloria because they know that joining her would spell political death. Look at Manny Villar & his wife, Cynthia. They tried to visit Erap in Tanay, but was barred from doing so. Villar is fighting for his seat as Senate President.

  80. John,

I saw in the catalogue of Carrefour shopping center (there should be one in Manila) a Sony digital camera 8 DCR-TRV270 20x opitcal zoom or 990x numeric zoom for 249 Euros (or roughly US$360) VAT included.

  81. 18,000 pesos? that’s too expensive. yung mp3 player nga na gawa sa china ay 500 pesos lang sa divisoria eh.

i’m looking for something cheaper, anna.

  82. joeseg joeseg

    John, Anna

All kinds of electronic gadgets, naghambalang sa Raon, Quiapo at sa lahat na malls, saksakan ng mura. Ang digital camera, about P10 thousand or say $200, digital video recorder, around P20 thousand or $400, depende sa klase.May mga second, GSM (galing sa magnanakaw), you can get it half the price or even lower.

Computers, ipod, mp3, celphones na nagagandahan, all kinds, bina-bargain.

  83. joeseg joeseg

    John

  84. So Joeseg,

“a Sony digital camera 8 DCR-TRV270 20x opitcal zoom or 990x numeric zoom for 249 Euros (or roughly US$360) VAT included.” is an OK price?

A Sony (genuine not fake Sony) digital camera Sony DSCS600 6 megapixels, Optical zoom 3x LCD screen 5cm (2 inches) with objective lens Carl Zeiss + Sony memory card MS Pro Duo 1 Gb is 190 Euros VAT incl or roughly a little less than US$300.

  85. John,

249 Euros is the price of the digital SONY VIDEO RECORDING camera 8 DCR-TRV270 20x optical zoom or 990x numeric zoom for 249 Euros (or roughly US$360) VAT included.

    Mahal pa rin?

  86. “500 Pesos? Gosh that’s roughly 7 Euros! Wow!

How big is the memory? And is it durable?”

256 MBs, anna. is it durable? depends on how you use it.

i bought a dvd player (brand Orange, made in china) for 2,000 last dec 2005. and i’m very happy with my purchase so far (jan 2007).

Joeseg, really 200 pesos lang huh?

  87. joeseg joeseg

    PV

I think what you mentioned is OK based on the specs. A sony is the best in digital camera, that’s what I gathered. But if somebody would like to just have a camera of not so pricely, ang dami sa atin. Dyan sa Greenhills, sangkatutak with the Muslim traders vying for your money. If you’re planning to go on vacation sa lugar ni Ate Ellen, huwag ka nang magdala ng mamahalin from Europe. Bili ka na lang dito. Matutuwa sa pagka-mumura ng halaga.

John, naku kung di lang illegal na magdala dito, I will make hakot when I go to Pinas to give to class projects of kiddies here (Chritstmas auction, Make Poverty History kind of…)

  89. mas mahal ang video cam so wag na lang muna yan. pwede na ang mumurahin na digital camera sa akin, kahit na gawa sa china.

DVD is now less than P1,500 depende sa tawaran. Kaya sa Greenhills, popular si davide, the muslims are always shouting, dividi, dividi, morang mora. But of course, forget about the brand.

  92. No, di puwede! Wrong arithmetic yata ako! Sorry, 30 Euros pala not 3 euros (almost himatayin there dahil sa mura)

    Heheheh!

  93. That’s still cheap coz the cheapest I saw here was LG brand for 49 Euros with 1 year guarantee.

Whew! Ok, that’s more like it 30 Euros and NOT 3 Euros.

Basta my official receipt kang maipapakita, I think hindi naman bawal.

ang mahal ay yung kuryente, tubig at pagkain (the price of fast food is slowly becoming out of reach for most consumers). it is exacerbated by the fact na hindi pa rin tumataas ang sweldo of most filipino workers.

all i can say is that the middle class is in BIG trouble.

  97. pirated dvd’s are the new opium of the masses. addicting. distracting. mesmerizing.

kung pwede lang sanang kainin ang mga pirated na dvd discs, them most filipinos would never go hungry ever again.

  98. Thanks, John.

Is that your 2,000 Peso (30 Euros) DVD player?

Specs ain’t bad at all. But I can get one here for 49 Euros and have a guarantee of 1 year so not worth buying there in Pinas.

What I want to buy is PORTABLE DVD player for myself (which I can hide from children) coz the cheapest here is still 150 Euros, 7 inch or so screen.

At ito ang matindi. A new consumers survey says that the budget of below average-income family consists of:

    1. Rice
    2. Ulam
    3. Celphone load

  100. How much is a kilo of rice now?

Five kilos of imported Thai rice (first class scented quality) is like 6 Euros here or 370 Pesos more or less at a fluctuating Euro exchange of 61 Pesos to a Euro.

  101. Alam mo Joeseg, when Joson (kapatid ni Tommy Joson of Nueva Ecija but can’t remember which one) was NFA chief, he said he was very surprised at the waste and the kurakot in the agency.

  102. John Marzan:

I got an Olympus Digital Camera that I keep in my bag wherever I go. It came with a set of video camera, printer, tripod, bag, and other accessories I bought via teleshopping. It was good, better than the Mavica or the Dimage that I used and gave to my husband. The last time I check, the 2006 model now cost less than a hundred dollars. OK ang shots. I can have more than a thousand pictures with a removable disk inside.

PV, mas mura pa pala ng konti dito sa saudi arabia. 15 to 17 saudi riyals equivalent to more or less than 210 pesos.

PV, ang dinig ko kagabi at a party, 1 Euro= 59 pesos na lang! Another way of shopping those DVD or Digital Cams or even Cell Phones is via eBay. Just last night, a husband of a Pinay was showing us 2 LG cell phones which he got from eBay for 13 Euro each! My, the latest models pa kamo! Kaya, mag-side trip nga ako ngayon sa eBay at ng mapalitan naman itong cell phone ng bayan ko! My DVD multi-system player is from Discount 24. com. It’s a year and a half na, no problem at all! T’was only for 39.95 Euro! And made in Europe pa, not in China!

To me in this blogsite, everybody is suspect, of a hidden agenda, of having his/her particular “high.” For all you and Chi know, both of you follow the same north star. Not the true North may be. But I follow the magnetic North. It’s cool to aim north, south is down there where only a few wants to go.

    John,
my aunt who just arrived from SF gave my daughter as “pasalubong” an Olympus FE 170, 7 megapixel, 2.5″ LCD display, 4X OptiZoom, uses AA penlight battery (not included), bought for $149 at Circuit City – they match anyone’s price so I assume they’ve the cheapest. You will have to pay separately for the XD memory card ($25 for 256MB or $50 for 1GB depending on Brand). A rechargeable battery might be preferred so you should invest on good charger and spare batteries. I suggest you buy Lithium Ion – the type used for cellphones – over Nickel Cadmium or Metal Hydride since these types have shorter charge life and has charge memory – they die easily from overcharging.

I got a catalog from http://www.bestbuy.com that has Canon Powershot 5 Megapixel w/ 4X opti-zoom and 1.8″ LCD for the same price. I think it’s the same specs, non-rechargeable batts, separate memory, no cover but lower resolution that the same-priced Olympus. Beware, however, because the XD memory card on Olympus cams are the most expensive.

I suggest you buy a 5 megapixel for now (you’re not going to print 20″ x 24″ pics, are you?), since most websites do not accept large format jpegs yet. MySpace, Friendster, Metacafe, etal, will not accept anything larger than 5megapixel at the moment. These digicams come with 15-second video captures (actually, several still shots at millisecond intervals that eat a lot of the memory, some even have sound, many don’t). I would recommend Olympus over Sony for the same price and format since Olympus cams have splash-proof enclosures, good for outdoor photogs especially in a humid and wet environment like Pinas. Sony cams also have lower zoom capabilities – not good for taking bikini shots, heheh. You may find one less than $150 including memory, charger and batteries, cables, and editing software. Good luck, john.

    jay c,

me, following the not true magnetic north? for your info, my friend, my compass is always pointing the 360 degrees magnetic north with it’s back azimuth of 180 degrees south with no hidden trail as my alternate track.

diretso ako, amigo! and it was my principle to side with the truth.

  113. Mrivera Mrivera

and will always be my principle.

  114. Magno,

    Re imported rice: Wow, mura!

My hubby was offered expat job to Middle East with home base in Dubai but I refused (heheh, not him) coz I felt I wouldn’t be able to integrate there.

My philosophy in expatriation is simple: can’t adapt or won’t adapt to local customs, better not go or leave.

  115. Mrivera Mrivera

anna, dubai is one place in the middle east where (the) islamic practice is not as conservative as in saudi arabia. mataas nga lamang ang standard of living doon (dubai).

you should have tried at kung susuwertihin ka at may kapital(alam kong meron ka), puwede kang magtayo ng sarili mong business. maraming mga asensadong filipino sa dubai.

sige na, para pag nag-open ka ng business mo, kahit janitor, apply ako. he he heh.

  116. Hahahahah! Magno, thanks for the encouragement and believe me, I don’t believe I would ever hire you as a mere janitor if I were lucky enough to succeed in a business.

The post went to my hubby’s collegue when we refused it and his wife is having a great time apparently (5 hours or 6 hours by plane only to London which is great for her.)

From here, I’m actually hoping for the next posting in Asia again but not sure it’s possible coz outfit might offer US post again and I HAVE NO DESIRE TO GO BACK TO AMERICA so we’ll see.

The advantages of geting expatriated to Asia or to the Middle East is high risk premium pay plus all incidentals ARE 100% covered unlike when a European expat is expatriated to EU capital, the premiums and incidentals are tiny because of closeness to home base.

Maybe when kiddies are in univ in UK, I (heheh) could allow my hubby to consider getting posted in the Middle East. (His company has thousands of Filipino employees there, engrs, technicians, other types of jobs, etc…)
