Hotdog Reunion: The Repeat

I did this story for VERA Files

Hotdog reunites in a repeat gig. Front row, from left: lead vocalists Joy Reyes, Maso Diez, Gina Montes and Rita Trinidad. Back, from left: Bassist Dennis Garcia, lead guitarist/vocalist Rene Garcia and drummer Jess Garcia. Front row, from left: lead vocalists Joy Reyes, Maso Diez, Gina Montes and Rita Trinidad.
Musician and advertising executive Dennis Garcia said there are five simple reasons why you should be at Dusit Thani at 8 p.m on July 26, Tuesday:

One, you will enjoy one and a half hours of fond memories;

Two, you will enjoy more hits than going to a concert of any other group – past or present;

Three, the core original members who truly molded the success of the legendary Hotdog band will be there plus Gina Montes, straight from London and Nadia Moore from Canada;

Four, maybe, this would be Hotdog’s time together on stage;

Five, you only live once.

Dennis , is one of the founders of trailblazing Pinoy pop-rock band Hotdog that delighted and have been delighting Filipinos with their exuberant music the past four decades.

Hotdog is the band behind such classics as “Pers Lab”, “Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko”, “Bongga Ka ’Day”, “Annie Batungbakal”, “Beh Buti Nga”, “Bitin Sa Iyo”, “Langit Na Naman”, “O, Lumapit Ka” and that ageless ditty beloved by homesick Filipinos,” Manila”.

Ang Coke at ang kalusugan

Coca-Cola Tigers Gerard Francisco and Cesar Catli Jr.

CenterLaw’s Bagares wins fellowship to France

Romel in Paris
Romel in Paris
Before Romel Bagares became a lawyer, he was a journalist, covering “Defense” for the Philippine Star.

As a lawyer, he was in the forefront in giving support to the families of the victims of the Maguindanao massacre, a number of them his friends.

At the CenterLaw, where he is the executive director, he handles the media cases like our suit against Mike Arroyo. Also our suit against police and defense officials in the 2007 Manila Peninsula standoff.

He also successfully defended Lt. Artemio Raymundo in the court martial over the latter’s sharing of DVDs on the lifestory of former President Joseph Estrada.

We congratulate Romel for his fellowship from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of France under its “Programme d’invitation des personnalités d’avenir” ( Invitation Program for Personalities of the Future) .

The program, run by the ministry’s Policy Planning Staff (Centre d’analyse et de prévision), selects young prominent personalities ranging from 25 to 40 years of age from all over the world who have spent little or no time in France, but who have a growing influence on their country’s affairs or on their country’s relations with France. With the award, the CenterLaw Executive Director joins the circle of about 220 personalities from Asia and Oceania who had already been granted the fellowship.

MVP’s embarrassing moment

MVP
While the Christian world was recollecting the martyrdom of Jesus Christ, telecommunications super executive Manuel V. Pangilinan was experiencing his own calvary.

He admitted to having committed plagiarism.

Plagiarism is defined in online dictionaries as “to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.”

If it were any ordinary person committing plagiarism, it would not be news. We would not be writing about it. But it’s MVP, the Filipino’s personifaction of success in business where trust and honesty are prime commodities.

The plagiarism happened on March 27, when he addressed the graduates at the Ateneo School of Humanities & School of Social Sciences. His speech was inspiring. He talked about learning from failure which everyone would surely have his in life, learning to take care of one’s body, sharing one’s blessings, gratitude, and friendship.

Taxing the future

Update: DOF suspends Order 17-09.

In my appearance in Boy Abunda’s “Private Conversations” many years ago, I was asked what’s my idea of being rich, and I replied, “just to have enough money in my wallet to be able to buy a good book I want when I see one.”

I said that because in my struggling days, I would have to save to be able to buy a book I want and by the time I have enough money for it, the book is gone. It was so frustrating.

With credit cards, half of my problem is solved. But there is still the problem of cost. Prices of bookpaper-bound books usually cost about P500. Much higher, up to P1,000 plus, if its hardbound.
