Sandiganbayan conviction of Imelda debunks Marcoses’ fake news

It’s doubtful that the fabulous Imelda Marcos would ever set foot in jail after the conviction by the Sandiganbayan on seven counts of graft with a prison sentence totaling 77 years (six years and 1 month to 11 years for each case).

But the decision last Nov. 9 by Associate Justice Maryann E. Corpuz-Manalac and concurred in by chairperson of the graft court’s fifth division, Rafael R. Lagos and Associate Justice Maria Theresa V. Mendoza-Arcega is enough to reverse the declining faith of many in the country’s justice system.

Actually, this is the second boost in less than a month. Last Oct. 22, Presiding Judge Andres B. Soriano of Branch 148 of the Regional Trial Court, National Capital Region refused to succumb to the pressures of those in power to nullify the amnesty granted to Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV in 2011.

Looting the Marcos loot

Just because the Presidential Commission on Good Government would be abolished, it doesn’t mean that the hunt for the people’s money looted by the Marcoses and hidden in bank accounts abroad or in properties under the name of some friends, should also end.

As PCGG Chair Andres Bautista said, the job could be continued by the Department of Justice. The reasons he gave, one of which as that Marcos- loot- hunting by the 200-man agency is no longer cost effective, makes sense.

So far, in its 27-year existence the PCGG has recovered $4 billion (P164 billion), only a tiny fraction of what was estimated to be a $10 billion loot in 1986. Just imagine how much the unrecovered would be worth by now including the interests.

The executive order creating the PCGG was the first issued by President Cory Aquino on Feb. 28, 1986, three days after the Marcos fled early evening of Feb. 25, 1986 as millions of Filipinos rose in a bloodless revolution called People Power.

No collaboration.Teddy Casiño and Imelda Marcos in the 2009 birthday party of Armida Siguion-Reyna and her son, Carlitos.

Interesting appointments

There is something amusing in the latest batch of appointments of President Aquino.

Alex Magno; Ronald Llamas

Like in the high-paying positions of Board of Directors of the Development Bank of the Philippines. Gloria Arroyo defender and Philippine Star columnist Alex Magno is out. Ronald Llamas of Akbayan is in.

I don’t know if Llamas specifically asked for DBP because of Magno but the mere mention of the names of the two reminds me of their verbal wrestling many years ago.

Magno greeted Llamas: “Hello, the last of the socialist.”
Llamas replied: “Hello, the first of the opportunist.”

Arroyo would be treated with civility if she comes to Cory’s wake : Noynoy

Update: Cory will be buried on Wednesday, Aug.5, at the family’s plot at the Manila Memorial park beside her husband, the late senator Benigno Aquino, Jr.

Necrological rites on Tuesday evening.

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said personally, he “would not totally welcome Gloria Arroyo and Imelda Marcos” but if they come to the wake of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, they would be treated with “civility.”

In an interview by David Celdran on ANC, Noynoy said he was expressing personal views and that the matter would have to be discussed by the family. “I would not totally welcome (Arroyo’s visit) but we have been taught civility, he said.

Asked if the same applies to Imelda Marcos, he replied “yes.”

Imelda turns 80 in style

Click here for Larry Leviste’s account of the Imeldific celebration.

I had two interesting coverages yesterday. One was the National Day reception at the US Embassy and the other was Imelda Marcos 80th birthday bash at Hotel Sofitel.

My cellphone battery gave way and here’s the few photos I got.
