Erap edges out Villar in number two position in Magdalo poll

Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) has edged out Manuel Villar, Jr. of the Nacionalista Party (NP)in the number two position in the May 10 presidential race in a survey conducted by the Magdalo, a group of reformist junior military officers .

The survey conducted from April 19 to 24 among 3,000 respondents nationwide showed Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino of the Liberal Party leading the race with 39.6 percent followed by Estrada with 24.8 percent and Villar with 23.6 percent.

This is the first survey that showed Estrada having overtaken Villar. Pulse Asia’s survey conducted April 23 to 25 among 1,800 respondents nationwide showed Villar and Estrada tied in second place with 20 percent each.

Kamakailan binatikos ni Deputy Presidential Spokesman Gary Olivar ang mga kandidato nga ginagawang isyu pa rin daw ang kanyang amo na si Gloria Arroyo samantalang busy raw ngayon sa pag-aayos ng kanyang “legacy” .

Pagkatapos sirain ang lahat na institusyon pagdemokratiko para lamang maprotektahan ang sarili, gusto ni Gloria Arroyo mamahalin siya ng taumbayan? Nahihibang siya kasama na rin ang kanyang mga alagad.

At akala naman niya maniniwala ang taumbayan na hihinto na si Arroyo sa kanyang pagka-ganid sa kapangyarihan? Eh di sana hindi na tumakbo sa pagka-kongresista.

Kung magpapaloko pa ang taumbayan kay Arroyo, talagang dapat lang talaga tayong magdusa.

Isyu pa rin talaga si Arroyo ngayon kahit hindi siya kandidato sa pagka-pangulo. Kasi sa baho ni Arroyo, kung sino ang kanyang didikitan nagiging mabaho na rin. Tingnan nyo ang nangyayari ngayon kay Gilbert Teodoro, ang opisyal na kandidato ng Lakas-Kampi, partido ng administrasyon? Kahit pa maraming may gusto kay Teodoro, hindi rin talaga nila masikmura na kinakampihan niya si Arroyo.

1. This is NOT my fight and this should not be the people’s fight as well. Our fight should be with Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and we should not be distracted from this. She’s about to appoint a new AFP Chief of Staff and a new Chief Justice in March. These appointments and how they will be done (particularly for the CJ) would be indicators of whether she has plans of stepping down or not. Aside from these, the prospect of the failure of elections scenario is still up in the air. In short, anything that deflects attention from her is playing according to her script. We must always remain vigilant and must never underestimate her.

2. It is a graft case and not an ethics case. Bulk of the evidence presented dealt with acts committed as early 1999 when Sen. Villar was still a congressman and during his first term as Senator. I believe that ethics cases should only cover acts committed after the mandate was given which, in this case, is 2007. With that, the only evidence left would be the double insertion in the General Appropriations Act (GAA). The problem is, the draft of the GAA was approved and presented to the plenary by the Finance Committee which was then headed by Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile. Said GAA was later on approved by the majority in the Senate. Therefore, assuming there were double insertions, it was the responsibility of Sen. Enrile’s staff to scrutinize the GAA and correct all anomalies and typo errors before being approved by Sen. Enrile. When it was approved by Sen. Enrile and presented to the plenary, it now became the responsibility of each Senator to scrutinize it again before approving it. Therefore, all those who voted for the approval of the GAA became equally liable for that double insertion.

‘Political prostitution’

The sordid description was supposed to refer to the votes of the 12 senators who cleared Sen. Manny Villar wrongdoing in the C-5 road extension project but Senator Jamby Villar zeroed in on colleague Loren Legarda who announced today her team-up with Villar for the 2010 elections.

“I congratulate Mr. Villar for his fantastic lobbying in turning someone like Senator [Loren] Legarda, who was rabidly against him into his girl Friday. As they say, Manny talks and money talk louder,” said Madrigal in a statement sent from Europe.

Added Madrigal: “I will not subscribe to political prostitution when the country’s interest is at stake. Public service is not a numbers game.”

Legarda was among the 12 senators (Aquilino Pimentel, Alan Peter Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Gregoriio Honasan, Joker Arroyo, Miriam Santiago, Ramon Revilla Jr., Jinggoy Estrada, Loren Legarda, Francis Pangilinan and Villar) who signed the resolution, expressing the sense of the Senate to dismiss the complaint and clear Villar of alleged acts of disorderly behavior.

May natanggap akong tsismis noong isang araw na binabawi raw ng kampo ni Sen. Manny Villar ang P25 milyon na binayad kay Boy Abunda sa paglabas niya sa political ad kung saan ini-interview niya si Villar tungkol sa kayang pag-asenso sa pamamagitan ng sipag at tiyaga.

Si Sen. Noynoy Aquino na kasi ngayon ang tinutulungan ni Boy na matalik na kaibigan ni Kris Aquino.

Tinanong ko si Boy kung tutuo ang tsismis at natawa lang siya. Hindi totoo sabi niya.

Blessing in disguise

Hindi ginusto ni Manny Villar na matanggal sa pagka- senate president ngunit maaring makakabuti pa sa kanyang political career itong nangyari.

Alam naman natin lahat na may plano si Villar na tumakbo para presidente sa 2008. Kaya nga siya kinukuyog ng ibang may ambisyon rin kasi bilang senate president, may lamang siya. Hindi lamang sa budget ng senado kung di na rin sa media mileage dahil lahat na nangyayari sa senado, dumadaan sa kanya. Nababanggit ang pangalan palagi.

Ngayon na hindi na siya senate president, hindi na masasabi ng iba pang presidentiables – Senators Ping Lacson, Mar Roxas at Loren Legarda – na lamang sa kanila si Villar.

Villar ousted as Senate president; Enrile sworn in

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile was sworn in this afternoon as the new Senate president in a coup that caught Senate President Manuel Villar and his allies by surprise.

Enrile, whose oath of office was administered by Sen. Gregorio Honasan Jr. at 4 p.m. when the chamber opened its plenary session, was supported by administrator senators and several senators, including Sen. Rodolfo Biazon.

Following Villar’s ouster, Senators Francis Pangilinan and Aquilino Pimentel Jr. resigned their posts as majority and minority leaders.

Queenmaker, kingmaker?

After Joseph Ejercito Estrada was all but sworn in as the 13th president of the Philippines, his announced Executive Secretary, Ronaldo B. Zamora, instructed Elmer Mercado, Jimmy Policarpio and myself, among others I presume, to start working for the election of Joker Arroyo, the congressman of the first district of Makati, as speaker of the House of Representatives. This was a campaign commitment, as soft of course as political commitments go, made by then candidate Erap to Joker.

At about the same time, Mrs. Cynthia Villar of the landowning Aguilar clan of Las Piñas and Muntinglupa suddenly became a regular fixture at the incoming president’s Polk address in North Greenhills. Her husband Manuel was elected virtually unopposed for his third term as representative of Las Piñas, the family fiefdom. Villar openly supported Jose de Venecia of his party Lakas for president. Of course Erap swept all of Metro Manila including Las Piñas, but that was no thanks to the Aguilar-Villar clan. Erap maintained that Nene Aguilar “secretly” supported him, but then, even if the latter did not, all of Luzon except Pangasinan was swept by Erap. Surely the residents of the fiefdom of Las Piñas are not the unthinking robots of their landowners.
