Selling one’s soul

.Here’s an interesting item from the blog of Susan Ople.

I have this on good authority.

Detained Navy Lt. SG Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes was recently offered campaign funds amounting to P4 million by a known jueteng lord. Despite meager funds, certainly not enough to finance a full-blown TV ad campaign, the senatorial candidate of GO refused the offer.

That P4 million would have been enough to at least cover the expense of a few radio spots, campaign posters, and mobilization costs of his volunteers. That he turned it down speaks volumes about this young guy’s principles.

I never agreed with the Magdalo’s mutiny, no matter how romantic or idyllic the notion behind it. But I believe in second chances, not just for him but for all of us as well.

Still, there is a cynical belief in the political world that honesty doesn’t get one elected. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to prove these cynics wrong?

We followed up Susan’s tip and we learned that the jueteng lord is from Central Luzon.

Another young man who did not succumb to monetary blandishments is GO (Genuine Opposition) spokesman Adel Tamano. We know from reliable sources that the young Tamano was offered P50 million, a condo unit and a car to join Team GMA.

Guesting at Bulung-Pulungan sa Philippine Plaza yesterday, Tamano humbly declined to confirm the monetary offer. All he could say was there was an offer for him to run under Team GMA.

The young Tamano said he does not pretend “to be a paragon of virtue” but he feels closer to the advocacies of the opposition for good governance, transparency and honesty in government.

Honesty and transparency are things that re-electionist Eduardo Angara would rather not talk about. In interviews, Angara prefers not to remember those days in 2004, when together with fellow Team GMAers, Tito Sotto and Tessie Oreta, exposed the massive cheating that Gloria Arroyo committed against Fernando Poe Jr.

Now, Angara is confident he will not suffer the fate of FPJ. In an interview with Inquirer’s Gil Cabacungan, Angara repeated the ribbing of his friends in the academe that by siding with the administration, “you’ll be sure your votes will be counted.”

Cabacungan quoted Angara as saying “It’s quite cynical but realistic.”

Angara also said the resources-challenged opposition “will wash in the end and what will count is the local organization. Gloria can bring out the mayors and governors. When she goes, she brings … thousands of sacks of goodies, of rice, whatever.”

This is spoken by a man who takes education as one of his advocacies. After all, not so long ago, wasn’t he president of the University of the Philippines?

Looking at Angara and the rest of Team GMA, I think of the biblical passage, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”

  1. Angara actually has confirmed what we actually know, that “Gloria can bring out the mayors and governors. When she goes, she brings … thousands of sacks of goodies, of rice, whatever.”

We have been informed that the Comelec has actually not updated the list of absentee voters. A lot many of the listed 8M OFWs have actually gone home. However, we have been informed that the returnees are being required to re-register but because of the tampering of the list of voters in 2003 and the list not updated, it is most likely that the Comelec will still send ballot kits to people in the old list, but since they already have gone home, the ballots kits will then have to be returned to the embassy/consulate, and there the Malacanang lackeys can try to fill them up in favor of the Team Bansot!

We are cracking our heads now on how to prevent such dishonesty and attempt to cheat once more with such magnanimity and much more notoriety especially because Japan is one of two of the places where voting by mail by is allowed.

Calling, calling on Mayor Binay to insist on an updating of voters’ list! We need the figure now of voters in Japan.
Ellen, can you check this for us? Thanks.

Lt. SG Sonny Trillanes and Atty. Adel Tamano (being the Spokesman of the Genuine Opposition) will become the “new faces” in the Philippine political arena. Their principled convictions will restore the faith of the Filipino contituents to their elected officials. Go forth and bring back the glory of the once untarnished Senate.

Our country needs more people like you. Good luck.

  5. vic vic

An attempt to bribe any person is already a crime. The amount mentioned here, by any other standard is a Huge amount. Fifty millions to bribe Adel Tamano, 4 millions for Trillianes, now where are the cops? And if there is truth to these allegations why don’t candidate Trillanes report the attempted briberies to the Comelec or the Authorities?

  6. kitamokitako kitamokitako

  8. pandawan pandawan

That wasw a brave thing to do – turn down 4 million. Way to go, Trillanes. Kudos to Tamano for turning down Malacanang, that was courageous! And this was while JDV was already announcing that they got him as one of their senatorial candidates. SUPALPAL!

Both of you are Rizal’s hope of the fatherland.

In an article posted in Abante, Election 2007 | By Ellen February 20,
    2007 titled Pagnanakaw sa taumbayan
“Malaking bagay yan. Aabot raw ng P250 milyon ang gagastusin ng isang kandidato sa pagka-senador kasama na doon ang pag-upa ng helicopter at eroplano sa pangangampanya. Biro mo sasabihan kang libre lahat yun. Sino naman ang hindi papayag.”

T.G.I.F by Rene Saguisag, Manila Times, Feb16, 2007,
A nation that has lost its way?
“I keep getting asked why I turned down my signed Supreme Court Appointment in January 1987. Or, why I did not run for reelection in 1992 despite the high risk of winning. One reason was I could not support my family on P14, 612.60 a month as senator (about double what I was getting in the Cabinet). The other is my vaunted inferiority complex. I did not think I had what it took to be one, looking at those who had served before me”

Let us do the math here the total salary (P14,612.60 x 72 mos.) of a senator whose term is 6 years will amount to P1,052,107.20 minus P250M equals P248,947,892.80. Whew, can you imagine if you have that amount in cold cash, just counting it would probably take some precious time
even with the help of a counting machine but probably quicker if you enlist math wizards in the COMELEC. Who in his right frame of mind is willing to lose P248+ Million just so they can be in the exclusive boys and girls club running around in the holes errrr halls of congress?

In an article titled Pork barrel for politics, not development by YVONNE T. CHUA & BOOMA B. CRUZ of Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism dated September 6, 2004 issue.

“Pork barrel, or simply, pork, refers to appropriations and favors obtained by a representative for his or her district. These funds are discretionary, meaning it is up to each congressman or senator to identify the projects that will be funded by their pork barrel allocation and the beneficiaries of the spending. Senators now get pork barrel allocations of P200 million each, while congressmen are allotted some P65 million each.”

Tsk, tsk tsk, well with that portion of money they are still in the red for P48,947,892.80, hmmmmn I wonder what pushes them to squander so much money just so they can do nothing based on Way Kurat’s statement which I quote from the same article below:

“Congressmen, however, rarely see anything wrong with their role as patrons of their districts and implementers of projects. “Take that away, ano pang gagawin namin (what else would we do)?” asks Compostela Rep. “Way Kurat” Zamora. “Of course, there’s the national budget, naming of streets, but saturated na rin ang laws. And I think without that (pork), no one will run.”

    What is really sad is this statement in the same article;

“He says that in one of these tête-á-têtes, a congressman from an impoverished province claimed the going rate in his jurisdiction went as high as P1,500 to P3,000 per voter. “They don’t just buy votes, they pay the antis so they will not vote,” the legislator says.

Another congressman traces the irresistible lure of money to voters to the depths of poverty in the country. “During the final hour, the one who is going to give them P50, which they can use for their needs, is one they’re going to vote for,” he says. “What you did prior to that is glossed over. It is the immediacy of the need.”

Vote buying as a tool to clinch an election victory is likely to change the way legislators use their pork barrel, says the legislator. “In our conversations, they say, `you know, it’s useless to have projects. Let’s just save the money and then use it at the 11th hour… If you don’t do that, when well-funded candidates come in, our projects will be forgotten. Don’t count on utang na loob (debt of gratitude) from those you helped. They’ll sell you out because it’s the present that’s important. Those projects, people don’t see it as something they should thank you for personally.'”

    Think about it, the present conduct of politics is not conducive to development and progress and this last quote from the same article is really scary;

“A few months before the 2004 elections, a publicist of several members of the House estimated that more than half of all congressmen had not touched their pork for projects, saving it instead for reelection purposes. A legislator from Mindanao also describes politicians as having turned “desperate,” with first-termers sweating the most in fear of losing their seats.

The problem with this new thinking is that the desperation among politicians can only breed and spread more desperation to the populace. As one lawmaker notes, “You have just one flashflood of money, you keep your people poor. It’s like a time bomb and it’s scary.”

We can continue on with our lives or rant and lament our deteriorating electoral contest complete with personality bashing or praising our choice of candidates with no clear cut platform of governance but mostly emotional appeal only to be disappointed once they are elected. The time to demand accountability is now, let us find ways to assert our voice in the coming elections and one of the way is to be part of
the initiative at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/OFWMan/ or help these politicians bring the nation further down towards chaotic bloody upheaval of an impending social volcano about to erupt.

The Opposition may as well just remind their supporters to write the full names of their candidates with no mention of those nuisance candidates with same names as Cayetano, Aquino, etc. to prevent the voters from remembering them crooks and ambitious dreamers like some guy claiming to represent the 8M no more OFWs.

BTW, over in the US, I am told that Filipino nurses are being turned out for employment there over Aussies and New Zealanders.

In Japan, the Japanese government is making the exams harder ONLY in Japanese for the foreigners not to be able to pass them board exams for nurses and caregivers.

We all know that the crooks are going to cheat again. Point is, are we all ready to stop them? Over in Japan, we are cracking our heads as to what to do to succeed in stopping these crooks from succeeding in cheating again in this election despite the planned connivance with local government officials!

I swear to God this is true. I was at Ongpin street last Sunday to watch the New Year celebration and buy some of my favorite stuffs. I did enjoy so many dragon dances performed inside stores and boutiques. At 3pm the street was suddenly occupied by a very long dragon entourage, complete with noisy fireworks. Quite a nice one, but I noticed the operator/dancers wearing KIKO T-shirts. I said, this must have been sponsored by Kiko to add more life and to cheer up visitors of Chinatown. Suddenly, a tall man emerged from nowhere shaking hands with the crowd: it was Kiko. He he he! Take NOTE, he was not campaigning, he was just saying “Happy New Year”. The highlight of my story is this, and this is true, I swear to God: A Chinese store owner came out of his store, passed at my left side, stopped at the sidewalk and upon seeing Kiko tartly remarked: BAKIT BA GANYAN SILA, PATI BA NAMAN CELEBRATION NAMIN PINAGSASAMANTALAHAN NILA? Amen.

  26. titser titser

    DEEP THOUGHTS…….

Political integrity is not a requirement for our present-day politicians. Principles are casually shed off like dirty clothes; there is no repentance or necessary excuse for disloyalty. The most loathsome example is Ferdinand Marcos who, having lost the presidential nomination by his Liberal Party in 1965, transferred to and was welcomed by the Nacionalista Party, which made him its official candidate. As a Liberal, he had fiercely attacked the Nacionalistas; as a converted Nacionalista, he now turned his guns against his former party. He won, declared martial law, and formed his all-powerful and unlamented KBL that demolished both the Nacionalista and Liberal Parties.

Many senatorial aspirants are minor Marcoses now, flitting from one party to another just to be included in their official slates as their vehicles to election victory. Former opponents of Joseph Estrada are now in the opposition ticket along with some of his faithful loyalists. A number of them, no longer faithful, are hoping—or applying—to be invited to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s team that many of her own apologists are reluctant to join.

They are present on that certain occasion, exchanging pleasantries. Sometimes, it doesn’t do any good to the host ‘cause the motive of the party is being shifted to campaign discussions. Candidates love to be on the center of attraction and they volunteer to speak on the microphone.

MANILA, Philippines — Professor Philip Alston, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary, or Special Executions has asked the top government officials to acknowledge that extra-judicial killings were happening.

“I would like a statement from the very top, from the President, from the Secretary of Defense, and certainly from the [Armed Forces] chief of staff saying that extra-judicial killings will not be tolerated,” he said during his press conference Wednesday.

Alston also asked that the report of the Melo Commission be published.

He noted that the military is in a state of denial.

Now, let’s see if the Bansot will ask Enrile again to tell the UN and EU fact-finding mission to stop meddling in Philippine affairs! Funny, how the US would want to keep quite about this Melo Report. Is it because the Americans are afraid about the possibility of US involvement in these killings with the Philippine government asking the US to include the NPA/CPP/NDF in the FBI list of terrorists?

  43. Benigno: It’s not as if there are no takers for said bribes. Bribers exist only because there are bribees.

    *****
Hahahahaha! Parody of the saying, “Walang mang-aalipin kung walang nagpapaalipin!”

On the contrary, Filipinos, in general, are by nature “mahiyain.” If no one will bribe them, they are unlikely to ask for bribes unless they have become used to getting bribes that this shenanigan has been distributing even with public funds to get what she wants like when she decided she wanted something to add to what she could use as one of her credentials, her so-called “PhD in Economics” from UP.

Someone wrote in his column that it was in fact a degree conferred to her in exchange for a big sum of money, and why her economic policies just suck, because there is in fact nothing in the brains!!!

Nice try! The slip is definitely showing!

I’m informed of the projects supposedly to be funded even with aids from overseas being sold for a fee by the IpDye, who has actually no business meddling in government affairs because he is a civilian who just happens to be married to the woman calling herself “President of the Philippines,” an issue in fact yet to be resolved!

Oliver Lozano goes ballistic as he fails to justify ‘Joselito’ candidacy
Marcos exposes ‘Peter’ C a sham, belies lawyer’s KBL claim

    02/21/2007
Lawyer Oliver Lozano and his nuisance senatorial candidate Joselito “Peter” Cayetano were yesterday exposed as a fraud by Ilocos Norte Gov. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., after the late strongman’s son submitted a certification to the effect that one Joselito “Peter” Cayetano was not a member of the political party Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL), where Marcos sits as its president.
Lozano, interviewed on ANC cable TV’s Prime News last night, failed to explain satisfactorily his claim that his KBL-endorsed candidate from Davao, was rejected by Marcos, claiming later that Marcos was not the KBL president, but one Vicente Millora, whom he says is both president and chairman of the party.
He then claimed that the KBL he is aligned with is the Millora wing, not the Marcos wing, even as this was never stated before the issuance of the Marcos certification denying the membership of Joselito Cayetano which was shown by Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano to the media.
The congressman, who is running for a Senate seat under the Genuine Opposition (GO) ticket, showed the Marcos certification to the media, to prove that the other Cayetano perjured himself when he filed his senatorial candidacy at the Commission on Elections,.
Lozano went ballistic and accused the news anchor, Ces Orena-Drilon of bias and charged her with asking him leading questions, insisting that in the end, it will be the Comelec that will decide on whether Joselito Lozano would be disqualified.
There is also now a “witness” who has recently emerged, even expressing willingness to testify in court to crush the credibility of Joselito Cayetano.
The witness already yielded before the United Opposition and had been “turned over” to the congressman to study the likelihood of him testifying in court to bolster the lawmaker’s charges set to be filed against the purported nuisance KBL candidate.
Reelectionist Sen. Panfilo Lacson yesterday disclosed this to reporters in an interview.

Kawawang nilalang!

Another Chiz ally slain in Sorsogon
    02/21/2007
Opposition senatorial candidate Rep. Francis “Chiz” Escudero is yet to barnstorm in his home province of Sorsogon but already he has lost three supporters there who all had been shot dead.
The latest victim, the government-run Philippine News Agency (PNA) yesterday said in a report, was Federico Esclaris Jr., 55, who was gunned down along with two other persons in Pilar town shortly after noontime last Monday.
Senior Supt. Dionisio Laceda, Pilar police chief, said the killings were not election-related, adding the communists did it.
“We don’t see intense political rivalry here that could be attributed to the killings,” Laceda was quoted by PNA as saying.
According to him, the crime was a handiwork of the New People’s Army (NPA) and Esclaris, he said, was very likely the only target of the suspect.
Esclaris was being groomed by the local camp of Escudero to run for vice mayor of Pilar.
The president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) and an ex-officio member of the town council, he died instantly from several bullets pumped into his body and head by the lone gunman.
Killed along with Esclaris were his driver, Allan Luna, and a companion identified as Abelardo Brioso, both from Pilar, 40 kilometers west of Sorsogon City, the provincial capital.
Escudero promptly condemned the killings and vowed to seek justice for the victims.
Esclaris was the congressman’s third political supporter who was killed.

  49. Magno:

One thing sure is that no matter how much they try to frighten Chiz Escudero to quit, I doubt he will. This guy is made of different stuff. Patayin na nila ang mga kasama niya, matitira pa rin siya and the people who support and believe in him. This guy is one of a kind, indeed!

Pwede ba this Abalos doesn’t have the right to be in Comelec even in a second.

  57. This is great – Alan Peter Cayetano, hitting back, dishing out as good as he gets.

    Go Cayetano, Go!

“GENUINE Opposition (GO) senatorial candidate Alan Peter Cayetano yesterday called Raul Gonzalez a “nuisance” justice secretary for insisting he could be disqualified over his supposed dual citizenship.”

  58. Ellen,

If there’s one has really sold his soul to Gloria, it’s the shithead who calls himself DoJ Chief whose comment “You can tell that sonamagun that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.. In other countries, he cannot even enter …We are very kind. We let everybody in and visit our kitchen and toilets,” about the UN rapporteur will go down in history as a statement that he must have borrowed from another loser, Donald Rumsfeld.

  59. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Wow! Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld a loser? What’s this world coming to when the man’s greatness in fighting liberal media, democract congress and the real enemies of free nation were being recognized as loser ? Freedom shouldn’t be taken for granted, it’s earn and an individual such as Honorable Donald Rumsfeld with strong determination served his country with inspiring distinction.

  60. I repeat, “We let everybody in and visit our kitchen and toilets,” about the UN rapporteur will go down in history as a statement that he must have borrowed from another LOSER, Donald Rumsfeld.3

  61. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Surely, lies are being told and facts are being suppressed which is the beautyy of freedom of expression that sometime, you say thing without justification in a case of Honorable Donald Rumsfeld a loser? Why should we just believe a person only because he wrote it on this blog, where is the meat of the argument. Of course, many of the European still considered Hitler is a hero.

  62. Tribune reports, “GO hints at dropping no-show Pangilinan.”

Ayoko ng GO. Will use the formal name para walang lituhan.

In any case, both Rumsfeld and Hitler are LOSERS and that’s one blippin’ fact. End of story.

  64. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

I’m glad that you recognized the topic being offered in this blog, so why yourself brought honorable Donald Rumsfeld and took a cheap shot toward him. It’s truly unfair to the man and his long time service to his country. I guess being a loser you should know! The story never end as long the like of you smearing the man’s reputation.

  65. Read earlier post – it ain’t about LOSER Rumsfeld but a side comment that a comment made by gunggonggonzales was similar to remarks made by LOSER Rumsfeld.

Smearing Rumsfeld reputation? His reputation as LOSER?
