Mike Arroyo yesterday announced that he is withdrawing the libel suits he filed before 46 journalists.
The announcement was made in a 12-paragraph statement read for him by Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, which was about his recovery from what he called “a dreadful ordeal”.
He quoted Fr. Fernando Suarez saying “there are times when God performs miracles to remind people that he is there.”
The part on the libel suits said: “In sincere gratitude to a nation that deserves a more harmonious leadership, and as a gesture of peace to the many kind hearts who have helped my family weather this crisis, I have instructed my attorneys to withdraw all the libel suits pending before the courts.
“Seeking redress for all the grievances that the libel sought to address now pales in comparison to taking on a genuine chance to make peace and to pursue a more positive and constructive relationship with those who will accept my offer of a handshake.”
He also said, “I am determined to keep in touch with the god that has been magnanimous to me, and to let his spirit of generosity steer me through any future conflicts.”
Following are reactions from three of the 46 sued by Arroyo:
Jake Macasaet, publisher of Malaya and president of the Philippine Press Institute, said, “I object to any motion that seeks dismissal of libel cases filed against me, editors and reporters of Malaya.
“It is my determination to get a verdict based on the merits of the case, and not on the mercy of the complainant, First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.
“I will not owe my freedom to him.”
Maritess Vitug, editor-in-chief of Newsbreak, said: “We are glad that the First Gentleman has seen the light. But he should never have filed these cases in the first place. We would like this matter to be resolved on its merits. This will provide journalists with parameters on libel is and what it is not.
Ninez Cacho-Olivarez, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Daily Tribune: “It’s his prerogative. I don’t want to thank him for that.”
Besides, Niñez said, Mike Arroyo “brought this to himself. I did not tell him to file a libel case against me.”
Niñez said had her case been pursued, it would have been dismissed anyway.
As to the statement of his lawyer, Ruy Rondain, that Mike Arroyo wants to forgive the journalists, Niñez said, “If there’s anybody who needs forgiveness, it’s the First Gentleman.
She added, “I was the one who was harassed. I was the one who had to shell out money for bail not only for myself but for all my editors and reporters.”
I share Niñez sentiments about Rondain’s skewed perspective of this case. He said on ANC that as the aggrieved party, Mike Arroyo would have to submit to the court a statement of pardon for those he charged with libel.
There’s something very wrong there. Why would I be pardoned by Mike Arroyo? I did not do him any wrong. In fact, it’s the other way around.
The aggrieved party is not only us, journalists, but the Filipino people.
Just take the case of the story that was the subject of the libel case against me. It’s about the 2004 post-election operations of Arroyo in the ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao).
What they did in the 2004 elections in ARMM resulted in the thwarting of the people’s choice to be their leader. That ignominious operation demeaned the institutions of the Comelec and the military. That caused demoralization in the military, the effects of which we saw in February 2006.
Because of that, 28 officers and a big number of enlisted men have been languishing in detention in Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal.
I’m glad that Mike Arroyo’s near-death experience has made him see the light. I hope the libel suits were not the only ones he saw.
If he sincerely wants peace, as he said in his statement, maybe he should make a clean breast of the many sins he has committed against the Filipino people. He should start with his operations related to the 2004 elections. One would be the return of the P700 million that his friend Joc Joc Bolante diverted from the farmers to his wife’s campaign funds.
Right now, he should take back his order to block by all means the election to the Senate of Alan Peter Cayetano. With that, the Comelec can now discard with finality the candidacy of Joselito Cayetano.
Also, he should tell us what happened to the $500 million in the German bank.

Kung nakaharap niya ang Lumikha sa kanya noong siya ay nakaratay pa, sigurado ako na ipinapagawa sa kanya ang mga nabanggit dito dahil binali wala niya ang katarungan.
Hindi pa tapos yan. May mga kasunod pa iyan. Kung ano man yun na hindi natin alam dapat niyang gawin yun bago siya abutan ng takip silim.

Rather than seeing the light, I think Mike Arroyo’s move is dictated upon by his little wife to gain some votes for her candidates who are groping in the dark.
The withdrawal statement is just rhetoric and pure imagination of the ghost writer who composed it, devoid of any sincerity to make peace with the journalists he wrongly charged for libel.
