Senate defers vote on Trillanes resolution

By Veronica Uy
INQUIRER.net

Senators on Tuesday deferred voting on a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate to allow jailed Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to attend sessions.

“We will take up as the first order of business tomorrow,” said Senate Majority Floor Leader Francis Pangilinan of the issue that took up most of the second day of the chamber’s regular session.

Pangilinan and Senator Edgardo Angara also signed the resolution Tuesday.

During the debates, administration Senators Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Juan Ponce-Enrile, and Richard Gordon questioned the propriety of the resolution, pointing out the constitutional principle of separation of powers.

But Senator Joker Arroyo suggested that Trillanes’ lawyer ask the court to downgrade the charges so that the alleged leader of the Oakwood mutiny could post bail.

As the Senate agreed to delete the portion of the resolution supporting Trillanes’ petition for bail, neophyte Senate Miguel Zubiri, who is also with the administration, proposed a broader wording.

Instead of “sit in sessions,” he suggested that the Senate ask the court to allow Trillanes to “perform functions as senator.” This, he said, would open the possibility of allowing teleconferencing.

Senate Majority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Senator Panfilo Lacson agreed to defer the voting to show that they are “reasonable,” as Tuesday was only the second day of the regular session.

The senators who signed Senate Resolution 22 on Monday were Senate President Manuel Villar, Pimentel, and Senators Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, Benigno Aquino III, Ana Consuelo Madrigal, Rodolfo Biazon, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Manuel Roxas II, Francis Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, Ramon Revilla Jr., Manuel Lapid, Gregorio Honasan, and Pia Cayetano.

The resolution said that while it recognizes the court’s jurisdiction over him, Trillanes must participate in Senate functions because the following circumstances:

* that he was elected by more than 12 million voters, “an overwhelming mandate” for him to sit as senator;

* that, since the case against the alleged leader of the Oakwood mutiny, Honasan, has been dropped, so should that against Trillanes, a mere follower;

* that the possibility of flight is remote;

* that the Senate has the facilities and manpower to take Trillanes into its custody and guarantee his presence in court when required; and

* that a precedence had been set by Senator Justiniano Montano, who was charged with the non-bailable offense of multiple murder in the 1950s, but who was allowed to post bail to perform his senatorial duties.

Ha? “sit in sessions,” ayaw ni unelected senator MiGirl?

Justiniano Montano, so walang lusot ang diaperman Joker, ???

What happened to you Colonel Honasan?

  8. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Tsupi si Gringo. Pirma-bawi dahil utos ni Gloriang Tiyanak. Baka ibalik siya sa kulungan. May panindigan ba ang isang balimbing at babaero? Nada!

  9. artsee artsee

May

Who does this shaneless Maguindanao Cheat thinks will be remotely interested what comments on the Trillanes issue he may have. Mr Miguel Zubiri, I’ve not heard of anyone who believes that you are an elected Senator other than the corrupt Comelec who cheated for you, so better you sit in the corner like a good girl should, play with yourself and shut your talkative mouth. Nobody listens to a liar and a cheat, ask your boss!

  11. we-will-never-learn we-will-never-learn

The bloody cheek this Zubiri has to pass comment on an honest, truely elected Senator such as Sonny Trillanes who we know has the proper mandate of the people.

  12. WWNL,

What happened? What did Zubiri say about Trillanes?

  13. we-will-never-learn we-will-never-learn

Anna his comment was reported as being :-
“Instead of “sit in sessions,” he suggested that the Senate ask the court to allow Trillanes to “perform functions as senator.” This, he said, would open the possibility of allowing teleconferencing.”
People want Trillanes there performing his duties in the flesh, it may not be suitable for Zubiri’s boss but to hell with them its what the electorate wants and voted for.
Zubiri should just sit there quietly polishing his nails.

Parang yellow Lacoste na made in China, umurong ng nilabhan.

  16. chi chi

    WWNL,

The unelected senator from Maguindanao will do Pinas good if he should just sit in sessions, without uttering any words…just polishing his nails as you said.

MiGirl is a fraud, so his signature in any senate resulutions should be declared null and void!

  21. harvey harvey

tungkol naman kay “gorio” hon-ass-an, first of all nanghihinayang talaga ako sa idol ko, akala ko ba naman tuloy tuloy na ang kanyang matagal ng pangarap na pabagsakin si bruha.

  22. Why wouldn’t the stupid members of the Senate not insist on letting Senator Trillanes to attend the sessions at the Senate? Stupid!

When the Commission on Elections accepted his application for candidacy to the Senate, they were in fact taking it for granted that he could win, and in a way were insulting his supporters that they could sustain and have him elected. He won, and they should accept that as fair judgment for whatever mischief he and his other disgruntled comrades in arms had attempted to do to remove a criminal from the palace by the murky river. When the 11M Filipinos voted for him, that means the Filipinos have made their decision to have him fulfill his duties and responsibilities to his country and people and do public works by serving them well as a Senator.

Members of this blog should write to all the Senators to order that he be allowed to attend their sessions even via Internet, and do their best to disqualify the short Poohtah and have her sent to jail for life.

Pwe!

without him being allowed to campaign directly for the seat he wants. he

  23. Yuko,

Hehehe!

When I met her here I had to ask her to repeat what she said twice – napikon daw. And frankly, I’m sure it wasn’t because my ears weren’t clean just that she was talking to her chin most of the time – you know being overshot and all…

  24. Chabeli Chabeli

    Yuko,

You say that “When the 11M Filipinos voted for him, that means the Filipinos have made their decision to have him fulfill his duties and responsibilities to his country and people and do public works by serving them well as a Senator.”

    Totally agree !

A senator is entitled to P200 million in pork barrel, a congressman P70 million. Provincial governors and city and municipal mayors have access to the Internal Revenue Allotment, the local governments’ share from national taxes collected.

Many political families whose members hold national and local posts thus can lay their hands on billions of pesos in taxpayers’ money.

Fourteen political families with many incumbent government officials elected last May have in their influence a total of more than P13 billion for this year.
