War widows

I met with two of the widows of the 14 Marines who died last July 10 in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan last week. They are here following up the financial benefits from the government due them as dependents of the slain soldiers.

They are also here to claim the generous financial help (P500,000 each) offered by former President Estrada from his Saludo sa Kawal Pilipino Foundation.

warwidows3.JPG By this time, the tears have dried up. Mary Ann Bautista, 44, and Jeanny Callueng, 36, have accepted the reality of life without their husbands. It was not so during the first moments when they learned that their husbands, Master Sergeant Noel Bautista,39, and Sergeant Rey Callueng,33, were killed in an encounter with elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front last July 10.

Mary Ann said after-battle-report on the tragedy reveals that Master Sgt Bautista was killed in the morning in the first hours of the firefight. Mary Ann said it might have it happened before 9 a.m.. because she got a text message from him a few minutes after 8 a.m) saying that they were in Tipo-Tipo. “Nagpapalit ng gulong” (Changing tires.)

In GMA-7’s Jun Veneracion’s eyewitness report, he reported about a military vehicle stuck in the mud. “The convoy halted after Major Marcelino noticed that three vehicles were no longer in our tail. Radio communication didn’t elicit a response from them.

“We turned back to check and found out that one of the vehicles got stuck in mud, causing the delay. Efforts to pull the truck from the sticky situation proved futile. But that was not the only problem.

”Armed men were sighted on high grounds. The Marines quickly scampered for battle positions. All at once, gunfire rang out. It was 10:30 am.”

Mary Ann said she tried to call her husband back but she never got through. All she got was the voice message ,”Not attended.”

She went doing her usual chore as cashier at the NCCC Mall in Tagum, Davao del Norte. At about 11:00 she got a message from her sister in Zamboanga asking her to go there. The first message was, her husband was wounded. After few more calls, she confirmed he was dead. “I got hysterical,” she related.

Before midnight, accompanied by her 15-year old son, Francis Dave (they also have a daughter, 14-year old Frea Dianne), she made the 19-hour trip to Zamboanga where she saw her dead husband. He had bullet wound on his forehead, which indicated that he was hit by a sniper.

Mary Ann keeps all the text messages of her husband in her cellphone. On Aug. 29, he would have turned 40.

It’s much more difficult for Jeanny, who was only married for one month and 12 days. Actually, they only lived as husband and wife for five days because they were married May 28 in Iligan City before a judge. Rey left June 1 for Basilan.

Jeanny is a public health nurse in Magsaysay, Lanao del Norte . She met Rey through a doctor they both knew. They had lived together before their civil marriage.

The night before that fateful day, Rey even told her to make sure to watch GMA-7. “Kasama namin si Jun Veneracion. Sigurado sa TV kami bukas.”

Sure enough, they were on TV. But it was not the kind of scene that even Rey would have wanted his wife to see. Like Master Sgt. Bautista, the 33-year old Sgt. Callueng was not among those beheaded and mutilated. Jeanny said she feels the deeper grief of the wives whose husbands were victims of barbarity.

Jeanny learned about her husband’s death through a friend’s text message. That was about 7 p.m. of July 10. She refused to believe it because Rey was a survivor of previous encounters. She immediately got a flashlight and went to the source of the message. She also texted other soldiers.

Looking back to those moments after she confirmed her husband’s death, Jeanny said felt like a zombie packing her things. Accompanied by two cousins, she took the midnight bus to Zamboanga. She turned limp upon seeing her husband’s corpse.

Jeanny has problems in claiming benefits due to Rey’s dependents because his civil status had not been updated in the military’s records at the time of his death. But she is praying the conflict with Rey’s family would be sorted in time.

The day before he died, Rey texted Jeanny that he was coming home end of August and that he can’t wait to start a family with her. (He has a three-year old daughter by another woman.)

An enemy’s bullet that went through his head blasted that dream away.

The two widows are just among the many victims of this senseless war in Mindanao. It would be understandable if the soldiers are fighting a foreign enemy. But no, it’s Filipinos against Filipinos all because of this Arroyo’s government policy on Mindanao. One evil woman, a bogus President backed by a bunch of greedy corrupt military officials against a small group of alleged bandits in the South. That’s outrageous. Financial assistance to the families is just a token. They cannot heal the emotional trauma that these people went through and are going through.

  2. Chabeli Chabeli

War is indeed hell on earth. Any war, not excluding the one in Mindanao, will not bring about peace but only hatred & revenge. It is, as Goji says, a “senseless war.”

  3. goji goji

Right Chabeli. We don’t mind if it’s sexless war but not senseless. Kidding aside, who’s benefiting from this war there? That’s a million dollar question.

  4. Ellen,

Thanks for the updates on this murder of the gallant soldiers who used to be led by Col. Querubin. I can’t help shedding not just a few but many tears, mostly of anger, for the injustice, etc. that Filipinos are being subjected to because the majority of Filipinos have seemingly become resigned to their fate of being led to total destruction by a crook whom they actually should have sent to jail by now. The question I would like to ask is up to when are they going to allow her to destroy everything that the Filipinos have fought for.

Puede ba patalsikin na, now na!

  5. chi chi

Only two of the many faces of the result of Asspweron’s “collateral damage”!

Bakit nga ba nasa gera ngayon ang Mindanao? To pacify the brewing anger of the soldiers due to the Tipo-tipo incident? Is this a war against terrorism, ASG and MNLF “double breakaway, double double breakaway group? For Dubya’s eyes only? All of the above and more?! What? Why?

  6. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Gloria Arroyo and corrupt her generals are widow maker. More soldiers are slaughtered in Mindanao war due to top brass’ incompetence and corruption. Dead soldiers are part of Esperon’s collateral damage and casualty dagdag-bawas statistics. Jailed President Erap Estrada should continue supporting widows and children to avail financial and educational assistance from the Saludo sa Kawal Pilipino Foundation and Erap Para sa Mahirap Foundation.

    Goji,

I had mentioned in a previous thread that President Bush had mentioned to the US Congress sometime back that the Philippines would be part of the Second Front in the War Against Terror. Could it be that this war in Mindanao is what he means ?

The world has had the access to watch the war in Iraq, and many have come to see that indeed the war has, & remains to be, senseless. The Bush administration has taken so much flak for it.

Only one who lacks brain cells would embark on such a venture called “War on Terror.” To my mind, the War on Terror is all about ideology: The Terrorists love death, the Coalition of the Willing love life. Really now, can ammunitions kill an ideology ? It only perpetuates it.

And if I may add, only the stupid involve themselves in a senseless war.

  8. Chabeli Chabeli

    Goji,

I read your reply on the thread where I posted my comments. Thanks for your reply.

  9. goji goji

Chabeli, yes I read your message in another thread and I replied. “Terrorist” or “terrorism” is the most abused term these days. In the past, countries (the West) went to war in the name of democracy against communism. Today, it’s against terrorism. Take note of what Bush used to say: “If you’re not with us, you’re with terrorists”. In other words, if you’re not America’s friend or her enemy, you’re a terrorist.

As I write, the US is actively engaged in destabilizing Castro’s government in Cuba. Castro is the few remaining unfriendly head of states very much hated by Uncle Sam. The US is reported to be supporting and aiding the dissidents in Cuba. The Cuba situation is another thing interesting to watch these days.

  10. goji goji

You’re welcome, Chabeli. My heart bleeds seeing Filipinos being killed by other Filipinos. That doesn’t make sense. We need not become another Iraq, Lebanon or Somalia. May God have mercy and pity on our people…

  11. Chabeli Chabeli

Goji, so maybe Cuba is next..hopefully not naman. In all this “War on Terror”, the only triumph I can see for America & its Coalition of the Willing is being successful in isolating themselves. Retaliation or revenge is not the answer to all this. It’ll just go on & on & on, & as a result, it makes the War bigger. The same goes for Mindanao..

Heaven help us if the war in Mindanao will expand to other areas in the Philippines.

  12. gokusen gokusen

  13. goji goji

Chabeli, war is a billion dollar business…for the US. With the sinking US dollar, very poor economy and feared recession, the US encourages war for that reason.

  14. Chabeli Chabeli

    Goji, I agree w/ you !

  15. chi chi

Gosh, Gokusen.

The gov’t, especially this current one, doesn’t care. These civilians are unknown except for their families and friends.

  16. chi chi

    goji,

Palagay mo ba ay kikita ng billion $$$$ ang Halliburton ni Cheney sa gera sa Mindanao, like in Iraq?

  17. Chabeli Chabeli

I can’t help but think that maybe Gloria is pissed off at the Marines, so she wants to get rid of them by ordering them to go to war in Mindanao. The less Marines there are in Metro Manila the better for her to control the military with the Ass.

  18. gokusen gokusen

    chi,

  19. chi chi

I understand, Gokusen.

    FYI…

Christening itself the Trillanes, Paglikurin! Movement (“Let Trillanes Serve”), it will be launched in Manila in the days immediately following the Aug. 16 filing of Trillanes’ motion for reconsideration at the Makati City Regional Trial Court, sala of Judge Oscar Pimentel. Trillanes’ lawyer, Ray Robles, is petitioning to allow Trillanes to attend Senate sessions and to set up an working office at his place of detention.

Ellen, the P500,000 assistance by Erap is the only thing that could help Jenny and her child survive the future. I understand it will tempt even the child’s grandparents to take it all away. If that happens, there will be 2 more victims added to the count.

I suggest you tell her to keep the husband’s text messages intact. It will be handy in case the claim is taken to the courts.

  22. goji goji

I have no doubt that President Estrada will give the money as promised. My question is aren’t the funds of his foundations frozen? Still in jail, how could he disburse the funds? The same question could be asked how he provided funds for the opposition team. If one is charged with plunder, most of his assets are frozen.

  23. gokusen gokusen

    goji,

i think goji, the funds will be coming from the foundation founded by president erap, and foundation is not owned by him so it is not included in whatever personal properties na frozen..

  24. Unconfirmed reports said the bullet that killed the soldiers were “blue-tipped.” That means it was government issued.

    Imagine, government-issued bullets killing soldiers!

  25. Tongue, Jenny has no child with Rey. They were yet to start a family when a blue-tipped bullet (unconfirmed) blasted their plan away. Rey has a daughter by another woman. Most of the benefits that were due to Rey’s dependents have been claimed, I understand, by Rey’s mother.

Jeanny said she has already submitted the necessary papers and she will get the pension. Jeanny said she will share with Rey’s family and daughter the assistance that Erap will give.

  26. gokusen gokusen

    ms. ellen,

  27. goji goji

Ellen, if the bullets were government issued, it’s also possible that the victims’ comrades were the ones who shot and killed them upon order from the higher up. Everything is possible under this illegitimate, evil Arroyo regime.

  28. goji goji

I don’t mean to divert from the topic by asking this question but I can’t help but ask what’s happening now to Joc Joc Bolante. It began with a big bang and now not even being mentioned.

  29. chi chi

What can’t expect anything more from this corrupt military officials, dahil sa kakorapan ay buhay ng mga sundalo ang kapalit!

  30. chi chi

    sori. We can’t expect..

  31. gokusen gokusen

    Chi,

if they will always push mnlf to the limit…neither oic or nur misuari can’t stop them to revolt..and it will happen in the whole mindanao … gma and his generals must not underestimate what’s going on even they will send thousands and thousands of troops once the massive bombing starts in the whole mindanao it will be too late for all…sayang ang hinihintay nilang grasya mula sa u.s…kulang pa sa ipangbibili nila ng mga bala…kasi pati civilian sasama na sa gulo..

  32. goji goji

But Gukesen, isn’t what you just said above the US and Arroyo are waiting for? An all-out wide scale war in Mindanao? It has long been planned and they’re now implementing the final stage.

  33. Chabeli Chabeli

Ms. Ellen says that “Unconfirmed reports said the bullet that killed the soldiers were “blue-tipped.” That means it was government issued.”

So who sold the “blue-tipped” bullets to the enemy ? If my memory serves me right I understand that the one who used to head the DENR would sell ammunition, bullets, etc. to the enemy.

“Imagine, government-issued bullets killing soldiers!” It’s beyond a civilized mind ! Only an animal would do this.

  34. chi chi

    Chabs,

Animals are ignorant lot and wouldn’t know how to sell “blue-tipped” bullets to the enemies, only the hybrid evils of EK and minions can.

If you go back to the earlier posts of Gokusen, he mentioned serious stuff about this issue.

  35. Mrivera Mrivera

“I understand it will tempt even the child’s grandparents to take it all away.”

How I wish there would be a Reality Show to be produced in which politicians will given tasks outside their field to have first–hand experience on what ordinary yet valiant people go through. It would be interesting if politicians like Gloria, Miriam Santiago, Migz Zubiri, Joker Arroyo, et. al will be tasked to join the battle in Basilan. What do I expect? The nemeses could just be exterminated not because of the bullets to be fired on them but by the ear-splitting screams of these politicians.

I’m sorry about what happened to your daughter.

Just to share- one of today’s readings from the scripture: Dt.10:12-22 What God Demands- 16- “from now on be obedient to the Lord and stop being stubborn. 17-the Lord your God is supreme over all gods and over all powers. He is great and mighty, and He is to be obeyed. He does not show partiality and he does not accept bribes. 18- He makes sure that orphans and widows treated fairly.”
Or maybe they do not talk and share with each matters of faith..sa pera kaya?

  49. rose rose

correction..”He makes sure that orphans and widows are treated fairly..” Wala ata akong nabasa na mayginawa siya para sa mga sundalo na namatay..were they considered heroes by her definition of who is a “hero”? Si Pakyaw ay hero niya. Heroism is fighting for one’s country is it not? And a true believer of God follows and obeys His laws. Anong klase siya? Nakakadismaya!

  50. chi chi

Agree, Rose.

Widows of slain soldiers, Moro women nix military offensive

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Widows and kin of soldiers slain during the series of clashes in Sulu last week have joined the clamor against sending more troops to the war-torn island and in Basilan.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo earlier ordered the deployment of 6,000 troops to Basilan and Sulu to hunt town Abu Sayyaf extremists and so-called “rogue” Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members.

But Wilfreda Potoy, mother of Private First Class Rico Potoy, one of 26 soldiers killed in clashes in Maimbung town on August 9, said the government should also consider the future of those left behind by soldiers killed in the offensives.

Sinungaling talaga!
