ABS-CBN update:

4TH UPDATE) 15 Marines, 42 ASG killed in Basilan fighting

Fifteen troops and 42 Muslim extremists were killed Saturday in clashes between government forces and al Qaeda-linked rebels on the southern island of Basilan, ABS-CBN News Channel reported.

In a phone interview over ANC, military spokesman Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro put the death toll at 15 soldiers killed while seven soldiers were wounded after Philippine Marines launched an attack on a camp of the terrorist Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

Bacarro also confirmed that among those killed in the Abu Sayyaf side was Umair Indaman, also known as “Abu Jihad”. Indaman is a suspect in the beheading of 10 Philippine Marine troops last July 10.

Bacarro said that the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf suffered about 30 wounded or dead but a military official in Basilan said as many as 42 members of the Abu Sayyaf had been killed.

According to Bacarro, the army casualties belong to the 64 Force Reconnaissance Company and Force Reconnaissance Class 13. He also confirmed that officers were among those killed but declined to give the number of dead nor their names because their kin have not been formally informed.

Bacarro also told ANC that government troops found the Abu Sayyaf camp Friday night and launched an attack at 6:25 a.m. Saturday. He also said that fighting between troops and the extremists is still ongoing.

Media blackout

Details of the incident remained sketchy because of a media blackout imposed by the military on Basilan, but the sources said the gunbattle on the outskirts of the town of Unkaya Pukan turned into close-quarters combat.

“The enemy suffered a lot of casualties. We are still trying to get the exact number but their casualties are heavy,” Maj. Eugene Batara, regional military spokesman, said.

“The offensive is continuing,” he told reporters in Zamboanga City.

“The Armed Forces will press the fight,” said Bacarro.

The media blackout on Basilan was imposed amidst a military build-up in response to the death of 14 Marines in a July 10 ambush. Ten of the Marines were beheaded.

That attack was blamed on the Abu Sayyaf and members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a group which is negotiating peace with the government.

The MILF, which signed a ceasefire with Manila three years ago, admits that their forces ambushed the Marines but insists this came after the soldiers intruded into MILF territory. It has denied beheading them.

Bacarro said that “the operation was undertaken in coordination with the local government units and MILF in the area.” He did not elaborate.

Since the July 10 ambush, the government has been pouring forces into Basilan for a likely offensive against the extremists.

The Abu Sayyaf has also stepped up their operations in other parts of the south. In Jolo island, near Basilan, 26 soldiers were killed in attacks by the Abu Sayyaf and rogue members of another Muslim rebel group, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) from August 6 to 10.

Troops have also been sent to Jolo but there have been no reports of new clashes there.

More than 12,000 soldiers are in Basilan and Jolo for possible assaults on the Muslim extremists.

Worst attacks

The Abu Sayyaf have been blamed for the worst terror attacks in the Philippines. The group has been linked by intelligence agencies to the al Qaeda terror network.

The US embassy and Philippine military say US Special Forces troops are providing intelligence and training in the hunt for Abu Sayyaf and other militants on the islands of Basilan and Jolo.

Between 100 to 500 US special forces troops are deployed in the southern region of Mindanao and islands along the Sulu archipelago including Jolo, according to intelligence sources.

Opposition lawmakers have alleged the US troops are involved in direct combat operations against the militants in violation of the Philippine Constitution. Both Manila and Washington have denied the claims. With a report from Agence France-Presse

  1. This calls for “insubordination” to the crooks who are sending these soldiers to their deaths. It can be done as a matter of fact. Israeli soldiers have done it, and so did/do their mothers, wives and daughters. I should know. My group in Tokyo have been in contact with those women opposing wars. Modern men are supposed to sit down and talk not make wars if they cannot make love especially among brothers.

  2. Oops, it should be “insubordination against the crooks!”….

very fresh graduates of pma…ano alam nila sa muslim guerilla tactics..last may when the proclamation Gov. Sakur Tan and Congressman Arbison, i was so shocked …kasi parang coup ang dating, palabas ako ng gym nagulat ako sobrang dami ng mga militar, nakita ko andun si Col. Rasul, anak ni Sen. Santanina Rasul she was there recruiting for new batch of PMA.. now how could we get new recruits in our elite academy ? sinong magulang na ang papayag na mag-aral at pumasok sa pma ang mga anak kung para dalhin lang sa mindanao at ibungad sa kamatayan?

the increasing number of casualties in the government troops is not anymore a “realities” in war as earlier told by assperon. these are mere negligence, incapability, and incompetency, and lack of reliable intelligence.

This must be so frustrating to the incarcerated marines (Gen Miranda, Col Querubin, Col de Leon, Col Banez, Col Segumalian et al) to see their men being slaughtered for no other reason but for a bogus regime to gain control of Mindanao through their annointed gang( is it the MILF this time?).

This Asspweron deserves to be hanged or better still butchered to pieces! He should be dismembered to pieces to avenge the lost lives of our soldiers! Grabe na talaga! HELP!!!!!!

How many more Filipino soldiers have to die in Basilan-Sulu quagmire? Many young lives have been lost in a senseless and reckless war. Enough is enough. These are soldiers of the Filipino people who die because they are ordered to fight a senseless war. We mourn the senseless death of young officers and men and innocent civilians killed in the crossfire.

  11. parasabayan parasabayan

Biazon and Trillianes should start the probe on this war before it is too late. Too many lives lost to just gain control of Mindanao!

  14. Wrong, AK-47! Filipinos can do a lot if they want to, but the problem is that they have been brainwashed to think that they cannot do anything without US help, etc. etc.

It is in fact a defeatist attitude that the idiot at the palace by the murky river and her Internet Brigade has been posting in blogs such as this that the truly concerned bloggers here should actually ignore and do as they are dictated by their conscience, and yes, by common sense!!!

Of course, they will not know unless they try doing what others have already done as what some daring Israeli mothers have done, even encouraging their sons in the Israel military to defy their leaders if they are wrong. In the Philippines, what they have there now are criminals defying the law, even commit crimes to get to their positions and stay as in the case of the short woman who has not only cheated but has committed treason and sedition to usurp her position from a duly elected president not just once but twice, etc.

Sabi nga, there must be a beginning to anything! 😛

This is a very critical phase of AFP’s, or even the govt’s, stand in Mindanao. They have to finish them now because if they won’t, there would be misconception that even after the gov’t has sent their FULL FORCE or at least an overwhelming number of troops against the limited number of bandits, still they are not able to finish them, people would think or worse the int’l community would think that the AFP cannot really finish them and these lawless groups can just continue their savagery in Mindanao. The AFP and the gov’t is becoming a laughing stock because of what is happening now. This is getting way, way serious! Remember, it just all started with the “search” for Fr. Bossi.

Why is there no US soldier killed or wounded? Because the GIs are in their command posts dictating the operations. Another Afghanistan in the making…

  34. goji goji

If we base it on the ratio: 4,500 government troops against 150 Abus, the number of soldiers/officers killed against those of the enemy indicates the government side is losing. While the poor soldiers are risking their limbs and lives, Arroyo’s Generals are in their air-conditioned offices drinking hot coffee and monitoring the war.

  35. Thanks for publishing the names. I was wondering why the AFP is not releasing the names of the soldiers who died serving our country. Publishing their names would make us realize that there are indeed faces/human beings behind those casualty statistics and make us properly grieve for them. Thanks again.

  36. AK-47 AK-47

“More than 12,000 soldiers are in Basilan and Jolo for possible assaults on the Muslim extremists.”

assuming the reported 42 abu sayyaf killed this morning are confirmed to be a “real abu sayyaf”, then the estimated ASG left from the previous 150 as being reported would now be 108. hence, the ratio now becomes 1/111 ??? (1 abu sayyaf as against 111 soldiers !).

in philippine history, there was no any other general like “general assperon” (sir, I salute you with my two feets !) as far as “war” is concerned ! his intelligence, bravery, and warfare tactics & strategies is outstanding ! and probably be googled soon in the world “non-guiness book of records” !!!

Talagang mamatay sila doon.

GMA/Gen. Esperon: Oh! they are so young sirs. Why do they have to die so young to satisfy your own personal interest? Bakit? Bakit? To GMA- we all know that you were not duly elected..nangagaw ka lang..To Gen. Esperon- how did you get to be a general? Were you ever awarded for valor and bravery? It is useless and a waste of time to appeal to your conscience or to your sense of justice..you don’t have any–halimaw talaga ang katulad ninyo. Are you?

  41. vic vic

Sending a division strenght against a platoon or a company of enemies in numerous cells is a classic booboo in modern warfare. Instead of specialized, highly trained units hunting them with back up support. Now the casualties is heavy on the government troops because of the ineptitudes of the high command. while the Military is quessing the enemy’s casualties, theirs is certain, more than 50 young soldiers, most have to see their first child yet.

  42. rose rose

I can’t help but cry at this news. At this stage the best we can do is to pray for them and those they left behind..their families. May mga anak ba? But I believe that in our darkest moment God is watching and helping us.
When we are at our weakest moment He is there to give us strength..hindi ba “our cause is just, in God we trust”? Let’s keep our trust and faith in Him..

Ano ngayon ang masasabi ni Villar, Honasan, Joker Arroyo, Angara, Enrile, Escudero, Cayetano, Pangilinan, Jinggoy and the rest of Gloria’s fans club? I almost forgot..FVR and Renato de Villa, what sayest thou sirs? And si JdV- general amnesty to those who killed the soldiers? political crime ito kasi kinalaban nila ang reyna..Kung mga ito ang pinadala sa laban..these would have been the names in the death list and casualty list..Did I hear them say..Hail to the cheat!

  44. Chabeli Chabeli

Dios ko naman ! Nakakaiyak just reading the names of the fallen soldiers. As If that was not enough, ABS-CBN also reported on its blog that “Lt. Col. Epifanio Panzo, PAF spokesman, said the MG-520 helicopter plunged into Bubuan Island, south of Basilan, around 5 p.m. Panzo said the Philippine Navy has rescued the two injured helicopter crewmen and retrieved the body of the unidentified pilot. They were brought to the headquarters of the 1st Marine Brigade in Basilan. the wounded pilot has been identified as a certain Captain Calupiran. A report from Agence France-Presse said that Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Horacio Tolentino denied earlier reports from military sources that the MG-520 went down after the pilot was shot by enemy fire.”

Those of us who are protected & are far away from the war must thank each & every soldier risking their lives for us. Their courage & bravery keep us all safe. I pray for each of them.

However, for the GMA & the Ass, I HOPE that a stray bullet will hit them !

  45. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

The high casualty of young lieutenants in a single encounter is disturbing. I think that the Abu Sayyaf snipers are selective in this particular incident. It seems that young officers are marked moving targets to demoralize government troopers. The Vietcong used the same tactics targeting G.I. officers at height of Vietnam War.

  46. goji goji

AK-47, are you saying that Arroyo is waiting for the US to order her to shoot one US soldier to justify America’s open involvement in Mindanao? Are you saying that Bush would sacrifice one American life for their country’s selfish interest? Possible. How many American lives have been sacrificed in Iraq? What’s one GI life in Mindanao? Arroyo can ask one Filipino soldier to shoot a GI then that would be the start of it…an all out war by US against the enemy in Mindanao. They would blame the shooting to Abus. If it is later discovered that the GI is shot not by the enemy but by the Filipinos, they the would claim it’s an accidental shooting.

  48. Chabeli Chabeli

    Goji,

Not meaning to intrude, but, that did cross my mind a few days ago. What if nga an American soldier gets shot at by whoever in Mindanao ? This will definetly set the stage for American intervention & it will signal the beginning of Bush’s “Second Front” in his War on Terror – where he had mentioned the Philippines.

Heaven help us if this war in Mindanao escalates.

  49. goji goji

Chabeli, that’s very possible because the US has used that trick in other countries to start a war. The US is known to have vowed to act against anyone or any country that hurts her citizen. They are willing to send one commando group to free one US soldier. To the US, her image and prestige are more important. What you and I think may just happen…

By the way, few know that Tito Soto is currently selling his body and soul to Malacanang to get appointed in the cabinet or other government position. He might get it because Arroyo is working on his request. Tito is practically begging these days for a job in Malacanang. What a shame!

By eliminating the MNLFs and the Abus, the tiyanak and asspweron are creating a powerful gang called MILF who are the untouchables because this will then become the Akbar army. In the 2010 elections, siguradong patok na patok na naman ang victory ng mga alipores ni tiyanak sa Mindanao. This evil duo has just created a Taliban or an Al Queda camp by favoring the MILF. By the time the tiyanak will be out of her stolen office( that is if she will ever let go of it) this gang she created will be so powerful that they can dictate how Mindanao will be governed. They want to be autonomous and the tiyanak and asspweron are giving it to them in a silver platter.

  54. TurningPoint TurningPoint

    AK-47, Goji

Your observation on US soldiers involvement in Mindanao has relevance to the column by Hern Zenarosa at Bulletin Today.

The presence of US special forces are similar to Afghanistan and it makes people fearful that it will worsen the situation in Mindanao.

“Dreams disappear with the death of the soldiers” as what we read in the Daily Inquirer summed up the death of young soldiers and officers. It’s all but started by the kidnapping of Fr. Bossi followed by an unclear policy unleashed by Gloria and Asperon and now joined by Teodoro.

  55. Chabeli Chabeli

Goji, you mentioned about Tito Sotto – the has-been yata is desperate. Aside from showbiz, trapo yata lang ang alam niya. I agree w/ you, “What a shame!”

Very interesting what you posted about the countries wanting to milk Mindanao. No wonder Gloria does not mind destroying it. Once destroyed like Iraq of Afghanistan, Mindanao will be up for bid, of course to the highest bidder & Gloria will skip happily all the way to the bank !

  56. parasabayan parasabayan

The US soldiers in Mindanao are just the string operators( like in a puppet show).

  57. goji goji

I’ve tried to avoid playing the US card in Mindanao but that’s the reality. Many may disagree but history tells us that she’s always been there where the trouble is. Whether they are trying to help or worsen the situation, that is subject to debate. But one thing is certain, America will not invest on something without anything in return. They are strict with the famous economic terminology “Return of Investment”.

  58. Chabeli Chabeli

Goji, a thought comes to mind..& what if the war in Mindanao escalates to, say, the Visayas, Luzon ? America must have learned from Iraq & Afghanistan by now. As we can see by now, America’s weakness in the war in Iraq & Afghanistan is how to be able to get out after destroying the countries..

  59. goji goji

One advantage our country has is that it’s composed of many islands; so escalating it to other areas would be difficult. You need air and sea support to accomplish this whether in offense or defense. I think it would be centered on Mindanao alone where huge interests are at stake. Thanks for seconding my opinion, Chabeli.

  60. Chabeli Chabeli

Thanks, too, Goji, for your comments & explanations. It is appreciated. You have good thoughts !

It’s entitled, “Who is the US supporting in the Mindanao War?” The article is in the Sunday column of Mr. William Esposo, “As I Wreck This Chair”: http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Opinion&p=49&type=2&sec=25&aid=20070818103

Billy Esposo is one of my favorite columnists. Another favorite write Dick Pascual has this to say about the GIs. Yes, what if one US soldier is taken by the enemy? He doesn’t have to be killed. A missing GI is enough for the US to justify direct involvement in Mindanao.

What if Moro fighters bag a fully-armed GI?

POSTSCRIPT By Federico D. Pascual Jr.

VFA BOMB: The administration should sort out immediately the actual status of American GIs in Muslim Mindanao before one of them is shot dead while supposedly advising Filipino troops or monitoring their intelligence and combat performance.

Just one armed GI getting killed in that arena crawling with Moro fighters is enough to have the RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement blow up in the face of the Arroyo administration.

With the government pouring in thousands of soldiers and Moro forces girding for a showdown in their home ground, the probability is high that a foreign soldier would trip and get caught in the crossfire.

Re: One advantage our country has is that it’s composed of many islands; so escalating it to other areas would be difficult.

The conflict in Mindanao may escalate throughout the island nation. Why? The US International Narcotics Control Strategy reported that the New People’s Army (NPA) has generated funding from the drug trade from a variety of means, including extortion of traffickers in the form of a “revolutionary” tax for providing security to marijuana plantation, and direct participation in marijuana cultivation, processing and operations. The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) is also linked to drug trafficking activity. The NPA and Abu Sayyaf are included in the US State Department’s Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) watch list. The combination of war on terror and war on drugs is a valid reason for the US to be involved in counterinsurgency in the Philippines. The United States’ military involvement in Colombia is based on war on drugs.

  68. goji goji

Who is our enemy? The Abus, MNLF, MILF or the Arroyo government? If Arroyo government is the enemy of the people (including us in this blog), then the Abus and the rest are not our enemies. Both can’t be our enemies. We need to be on one side. If you ask me even if my position is unpopular, I’m on the Muslim side because Arroyo government is my enemy.

  71. goji goji

Diego, let’s not confused NPA with Abus. The two are different and separate even with the reasons that they are fighting for. Ideology wise, they share common objective; that is, to overthrow the government. I don’t think the US would touch the other parts of the country. After the US base closure in 1992, they would prefer that the hidden bases are in the South far from the watchful eyes of the critics. In addition, the US economy is now in a slop. They are faced with very serious credit and mortgage industry problems. They are in deep financial woes. They continue to pour in billions of dollars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and other countries. They cannot afford to spend more on the Philippines. What they do is using covert aid assistance. For instance, they would donate millions of dollars to the Arroyo government saying these are for economic and humanitarian assistance; but in reality these funds are being used to fight against the enemy in the South. The US doesn’t mind if a portion of these funds are pocketed by some Arroyo crooks as long as most are being used to indirectly accomplish what Uncle Sam wants. See the trick? Few know what’s really going on with the partnership between Arroyo and the US (CIA).

  74. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Ideology is not the issue here. There’s no confusion in their alleged involvement in drugs trafficking to finance their war against the Arroyo government. My point is that the combination of war on drugs and war on terror are recipes for US military involvement in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf and the NPA are both listed in Washington’s foreign terrorists’ organization.

  75. goji goji

Gokusen, it’s good you mentioned Marcos. How did you know? were you already born then? Yes, Marcos fell out from Uncle Sam’s graces when he reduced the US base term by one half. That was the start of Uncle Sam’s displeasure with Marcos. Marcos’ enemies capitalized on America’s slow withdrawal of support from the Marcos government. The time was ripe to oust him and that was in 1986 when the US finally let go of him. Those who were knowledgeable about the situation would attest to the fact that US Marines surrounded Malacanang during those last moment of this they called “dictator”.

  76. goji goji

Okay, I got your point Diego. It’s not only war on terrorism that they play. It’s war on drugs and whatever they can think of. All these are geared towards serving their (US) interest.

What are the US Special Forces for? They are in Afghanistan hunting down Al Qaeda radicals and at the same time destroying and prevent their source of finance in form of cocaine export. Afghanistan and Colombia are the top source of cocaine in asphalt jungles of the United States. The NPA, the Abu Sayyaf and the MILF maybe exporting shabu too. The Philippines also serves as a transshipment point for further export of shabu to Japan, Australia, Korea, the U.S., Guam, and Saipan. Why? Philippine customs officers and other law enforcement agencies can be easily bribed.

In the 1980’s, U.S. CIA operatives teamed up with cocaine dealers in the fight against Communism in Latin America. Profits from cocaine sold in Los Angeles and Miami were used by the CIA to fund, and buy guns for the anti-communist contra rebels. The war on drugs and war on terror is very complicated problem. You don’t know the real enemies are.

The truth, Gokusen, was that Marcos actually loved his country and people. He did not want any of them to die and be killed by their fellow Filipinos. As his wife always says/said, “Isang lahi, isang diwa!”

Yes, AK-47, Marcos was surrounded by leeches and crocodiles known as “cronies” who took advantage of the naivette of the wife, Imelda, when the Apo was too sick to really control the country.

Marcos has long died. It’s only now that people realize his worth and contribution to the country. Even his worst enemies and critics now admit he was a better leader. He was full of vision for the country and that included power energy and freedom from foreign meddling. Recently, Congressman Golez of Paranaque said that what the country needs is a national discipline borrowing the famous “New Society” slogan of Marcos. Indeed, we witnessed some discipline among our people during the initial years of Martial Law. Marcos being human like many others succumbed to temptation and ambition so he failed. His failure was largely caused by his wife and other cronies. That was a bitter lesson he learned. When Ninoy was assassinated, Marcos enemies capitalized on his death and that was the beginning of the end of Marcos.

Only a few PMA graduates opt to be in the Marines. It is the elite combat arm of the AFP, even in all other countries as well the marines are normally numbered leess compared to the other arms of the armed forces but they are always looked up to for the toughest combats. For Asspweron to sacrifice six very young PMAers on a very dubious fight, he deserves to be shot himself! As it is, our marines are headless. All their best officers are incarcerated. Allaga, a Garci general is leading them and another bigger Garci general is leading the whole armed forces. How much more demoralizing can that be?

The volatile situation in Minadanao is very scary because it gives a signal to the other groups like the CPP and NPA to maybe take advantage of the situation. How can a very weak government with a very inutil cheat of staff who only knows one thing, to cheat and execute the orders of a bogus and evil president ever defend all the fronts when all these factions start to fight the government troops altogether. Tiyanak and Asspweron just touched a bee hive and now all the bees are ready to sting them! I hope these bees are that of the African variety which kills!

The Americans always want the Philippines as their strategic base in Southeast Asia. They picked Cory Aquino. FVR to make sure they were allowed to operate in the Philippines. Erap was an experiment and when they found out he could not work 100% for them, they ousted him and installed tiyanak instead. REmember how tiyanak caters to all their whims? Even the rapist was given back to US custody.

I still believe that Marcos did more good and productive projects for the country. All these efforts went down the drain when his generals ran the country with Imelda’s lead! The Filipinos in my generation should know who the wolves were!

The truth is, Marcos also initiated a campaign against the Muslim rebels then. But at that time, it was only a small group of bandits. The number grew when Cory Aquino took over.
Even during the time of Marcos, we heard about the bodies of soldiers and Marines being shipped to Manila during midnight so that people wouldn’t notice. In a war and conflict, there are casualties of course. But while Marcos was fighting against the Muslim bandits, he also saw to it the that needs and welfare of the Muslims were taken care of. can you imagine a colonel being promoted to one star rank only after more than ten years? ganu’n si canieso. na-promote lamang noong talagang malala na ang sakit ni apo ferdie dahil sa malaking galit sa kanya.

Mrivera, most of the high ranking military officials during the Marcos regime were Ilocanos particularly from Anak Ti Batac. The Presidential Guard Battalion was headed by Ver and Barangan. Most of the guards are Ilocanos. Ilocanos during the time of Marcos had a Fiest Day. Marcos loved the Ilocanos very much and he was loved as well.

Tama ba, Gokusen?

MRivera, I am not sure if the appointment was official or merely a first choice, but the net result is RAdm Romy Espaldon at the SouthCom helm.
AK47, in case you’re not aware, Narcise is an Ilocano and Esperon is a Pangalatok who understands or might even speak Ilocano. Such diversity of behavior in Ilocandia was also the downfall of Diego Silang. Snide remarks in Ellenville against Ilocanos only serve to create divisions, not discourse. It might be relevant to mention that the commander of the task force besieging the Enrile/Ramos/Honasan rebels at EDSA was an Ilocano who desisted in giving the order to fire to prevent collateral damage.

to all who shared their admiration and appreciation in remembering the late beloved president marcos at this moment of miseries, maraming maraming salamat poh sa inyong lahat.

  134. AK-47 AK-47

    neonate,
thanks a lot for the info, ngayon ko lang nalaman sayo na ilocano din pala si narcise. there is a very big difference in personality between the pangalatoks (or pangasinense) and ilocanos. so, pangasinense pala etong hayop na esperon.

  135. AK-47 AK-47

  141. chi chi

    AK,

Bilib ako kung ang multi-dialect speaking president is not fake. Pati dialects ay ginagawang pulitikal ni Gloria, the multi-personality sob!

  142. AK-47 AK-47

    chi,

  144. chi chi

Yahahaah! Recording ha?! Nagli-lipsync pala ang bruha!
