Enough of the “moro-moro”

Related story: “Plot” seen as ploy to extend Esperon -Biazon

Malaya editorial:

If Gen. Hermogenes Esperon is obsessed with staying as AFP chief after his scheduled retirement next month and if Gloria Arroyo is inclined to grant his wish as payment for services rendered, why don’t the two of them get it done away with?

It’s not the first time an AFP chief wants to stick to his post like a leech (think Fabian Ver). It’s also not the first time a widely discredited president wants to keep a trusted man at the AFP helm (think Ferdinand Marcos). So there’s a precedent.

That both Ver and Marcos ignominiously had to flee in the face of the people’s wrath in February 1986 is a minor lesson in history that Esperon and Gloria could both ignore. It could not happen to them, could it? Esperon does not tire of boasting he could crush any “destabilization” attempt by Gloria’s enemies. Gloria is equally confident no force could eject her from the Palace before noon of June 30, 2010, and by the grace of the AFP, possibly beyond.

People would go along – or pretend to go along – with Gloria’s extension of Esperon’s services. They have long given up hope Gloria will listen to them. What’s Esperon’s extension but the latest in the long list of Gloria’s abusive exercise of power?

Gloria and her Cabinet members, however, should stop scaring the people with all this talk about renewed efforts to bring down her administration through mass actions by civilians and withdrawal of support by the military. In truth, people are frightened not by the purported campaign for another EDSA uprising, but by the threats of a crackdown by the administration.

Last week, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez threatened to send to jail media men who ignore police orders. The background is the Manila Peninsula occupation by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and their supporters. Media men were told to leave as government forces prepared to storm the hotel. For fear of missing out on the action and the coverage, they did not. After the assault, they were taken to military camps in handcuffs.

Yesterday, PNP chief Avelino Razon said checkpoints might again be put up and a curfew imposed because of the alleged plots to overthrow the administration.

What next? Threat of a round-up of “destabilizers” and their supporters, disclosure of purported communist rebel plans to conduct assassinations, warning of a terrorist bombing campaign?

They way we see it, the government “drama” is plain blackmail to quell the opposition to Esperon’s extension.

Yeajh, enough of the zarzuela. Just extend the Ass’s service! Abusado naman si Gloria, what else is new?!

  2. chi chi

siRaulo Gonzalez just said that Trillanes group will destabilized EK.

Hahahaha!

  3. Elvira Sahara Elvira Sahara

Haay, nag-drama pa si Goria at Esperon…buking na sila! Ika nga, matagal ng nag-rate yung idea nila, heto at ikot-ikot pa rin sila!

Enough na nga at nakakahilo na, Destabilizers!

  4. noypisausa noypisausa

so what else is new. as i presented in my previous postings, the extension is a done deal. Esperon stays as CSAFP and Yano waits in the sideline as CGPA. Meanwhile, those talented military officers (the bright and the brightest but without political padrinos) will be forced to retire and that leaves the military with the mediocre officers. What’s the common denominator of Esperon, Yano and Cadungog. They were all assigned with the elite Presidential Security Guards. In short, mga Bata ni Ma’am. I have the same conclusion as Ramon Farolan, Esperon will be extended. God bless the philippines.

  5. Tsismis or not, but let’s face it. Everyone is hoping Filipinos will and can remove the Dorobo by this year. It’s just that there seems to be no group yet capable of doing it, definitely not those brilliant (daw) lawmakers and representatives the Filipinos have voted to be their public servants, not puppies of the dorobo stealing for them from the national treasury. Golly, kakutsaba pa sa kalokohan!

Destabilization, my ass! Guni-guni iyan ni Gloria Dorobo and her minions.

  6. ipaglaban_mo ipaglaban_mo

I agree with you grizzy. I myself would support a coup but I don’t see it being succesful to topple gloria’s evil empire. We have so much filipinos busy fighting for survival to feed their families, that’s the tiyanak’s tactic; keep the poor filipinos busy so they won’t have time to support a coup.
So basically, it’s just a mock-coup created by this abusive administration to proclaim another disguised/re-named martial law. Tuloy ang laban, siyempre!

  7. rose rose

I can understand the relationship of Ver and Marcos…they are related…magkamaganak. Are they related even by a stretch of imagination by affinity? Ang pagmamahal ba nila ay gaya ng pagmamahal ng baboy sa kaning baboy? kasi ang baboy pag kumain ay lamon..kaya lagi we were always reminded
..”don’t eat like a pig”..don’t be like a pig..a pig is associated with one who is greedy… one who is dirty thus the expression “dirty pig” tama talaga silang dalawa!

  8. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

grizzy (err, yuko?), on “dorobo” gloria, paki explain nga ang dorobo? Para kasing masarap ang dating, like “adobo” (as in adobong baboy).

I think, the GMA government has raw intelligence reports regarding an attempt to overthrow GMA but they do not know the specifics of this threat, so they are applying a “divide and rule tactic” by floating that the threat will be from the “left”. The moment the attempt to overthrow materializes and it will of course be from the “right”, the GMA government will be quick to tell the people that this is a leftist powergrab effectively neutralizing the support of the people, the GMA government will do its best never to allow this rebel group to have access to the media to counter the propaganda of the government, hence the warning of Gonzalez to all media outfits not to cover the activities of these prospective rebels and air the statements of the said group.

  10. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Heneral Hemorrhoid Assperon might just get his wish! Pekeng Gloria need to protect her own personal interest. If pekeng Gloria couldn’t or unable to get anyone she can truly trust to protect her from overthrown, Assperon will be extended. But, we shall see.

  11. I’m inclined to remember what Yuko always says “Kawawang Pilipinas!” but lately, these high profile comical skits just makes me laugh. What will they think of next? The sky is falling? GMA reminds me of chicken little.

  12. Sinabi mo pa, Jug. It will start seeping into the heads of these crooks maybe if Filipinos stop playing deaf and blind to these moro-moro that are in fact insulting to their mentality.

Gloria Dorobo and her minions may think of themselves as geniuses but they are in fact a bunch of idiots and morons.

Yes, “Kawawang Pilipinas!” My sympathy to all!

  13. HG,

“Dorobo” is “magnanakaw” in Japanese. I don’t speak Kenyan although I am familiar with Swahili. The only place I visited in the African continent was Morocco in the Algiers via Alhambra in Spain. Hindi pa kilala ang mga PLO noon.

  14. Hindi masarap matawag na dorobo sa Japan. Theft and robbery are considered serious crimes in Japan, especially when committed by a wannabe queen like the Dorobo squatting at the palace by the murky river. In Spanish, she can be called Dona Ladron y Pidal! 😛

BTW, iyong adobo pala Mexican dish, pero walang toyo!

  15. vic vic

The last time there was a Coup it was the Vice President overthrowing Her President, so the Coup the Secretary of Justice talking about maybe coming from Within or a Coup within the Coup? It is now getting ever much more confusing, or the Administration just trying to Confuse, and planning to Strike in the midst as it always did..

  16. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

I don’t know if I would agree to “kawawang Pilipinas.” Perhaps, Pilipinas deserve it? If Pilipinas is waiting for the outsiders to come in to the country and take the country back from the thieves and crooks and hand it to them, it’s not going to happen. Case in point, liar, cheater and thief Gloria is still ruling the country. Help those that help themselves!…Also, theft and robbery are considered serious crimes in Pilipinas, but when the law enforcers are the one doing the thieving and robbing, what can anyone do?

Are they hallucinating ? The great Dorobo Gloria is the main issue. She needs Esperon as her protector.

Moro-moro talaga.

Actually, matagal na nila itong ginagawa sa atin, hindi pa nga lang “gising” ang karamihan sa atin. hi ellen, just surfing the net and found this blog very informative. well i think this admin has to sow confusion and paint the opposition as the bad guy. this will ensure their hold to power. but a question lingers in my mind, what are the honorable officers corp are doing? yun lang bang nakakulong ang may kakayahan? if i’m not mistaken Jug and Zardux are in the service? what’s the real score? i talked to some ep’s (retired) may possibility for the sarge to lead but that is suntok sa buwan. matiisin kasi ang pinoy. aware sila at nadarama ang paghihirap pero kaya eh. so it will be a swift coup and change or just wait til 2010. if it will be the latter, dapat wala ng magreklamo, ibig sabihin nag tolerate tayo, tiis tayo. tapos!

  24. Maganda iyon a, coup within a coup! Magandang pakinggan, I mean.

Ngayon trying hard to make money ang mga dorobo.

We’ve been hearing in fact of the attempts for instance of the dorobo and her cahoots to make money out of the patrimonies in Japan. Buti na lang aware ang mga hapon sa hinaing ng mga pilipino sa Japan, and Japanese negotiators for the Japan-Philippine Reparations Treaty in the 50’s thought of the welfare and interests of future generations of Filipinos that they had been wise to include the clause providing Filipinos a way to sue crooks like Gloria Dorobo to be sued in Philippine and Japanese courts if they would ever try to get rid of the properties given to the Filipino people as reparations payments for the war.

Now, iyong idiot na Ermita payag pang siya ang ipinapain na culprit daw in the transaction regarding the Nampeidai property being questioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which I understand is semi-caretaker of the patrimonies in Japan. Buti na lang, pero duda namin na this is to deviate attention to the more meaty deal regarding the property near the Imperial Palace in Kudanshita that is being used as residence of the ambassador.

Moro-moro or what, sana magkatotoo nang matanggal na si Gloria Dorobo! Ang please next time, ingat na sanang maglagay pa ng isang trapo o anak, apo or whatever ng mga dating trapo na dahilan kung bakit ganito ang Pilipinas ngayon! Saklap!

  26. rose rose

matiisin nga ang mga Pilipino..the ordinary people (the common people…the masses) nagtitiis because they depend on the intellectuals, on the rich for their survival…sa probinsiya magsasaka sila pero ang lupa ay hindi naman sa kanila…kung walang kinagawa ang so called intellectuals, rich para sa kanila nq ordinary common people much as they want to better their lives they have no choice but to “magtiis”. young girls and boys sell their body to survive. a number of the intellectuals and the rich (particularly those who are in the government sell their souls)..ang mga businessmen naman…they are comfortable so why rock the boat? sumayaw ka na lang…the ordinary common people have no choice…they are chained and are slaves of the few rich, intellectual who hold them. And the Philippines is a christian country? a catholic country? ironical…

  33. chi chi

    Rose,

  36. The time is clicking, too, till Jan. 22. Ingat ang mga tao kasi baka may papuputukin na naman sila tapos excuse it as mere gas explosion as they did in the Ayala mall.

Got pictures of the Glorietta bombing.

Let’s remember what the brave soldiers now detained said about refusing to follow order for them to plant bombs where the rallyists would pass through and blame it on them by tagging them all as commies!

Ellen, I recall this is the second time you used “moro-moro” here. Mind explaining a bit how you use it here? Some are offended by this phrase, which has invaded our linguistic repertoire on comedy (inspired by zarsuela plays of early years). “Moro” (for Muslims) seems clear to many, but “moro-moro” isn’t.

Reminds me of mlq3 recently posting in his blog the “Filipino monkey,” the phrase which nearly caused a US-Iran war and the prospect of WWIII. Read these -http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/14/filipino-monkey-and-the-naval-confrontation-with-iran/; http://www.guardian.co.uk/iran/story/0,,2240533,00.html.

Personally, I sometimes find it distressing, not that I’m directly affected or reactive to “moro-moro” (I also unwittingly use it, only to realize that I shouldn’t), but as a Christian I’m faulted by some Muslims for parroting it without explaining what I mean. For many, it’s a harmless phrase, but sometimes it gets nasty as a Muslim joke or Christian prejudice, depending on how one takes it.

It’s consoling that enlightened Muslim Filipinos somehow get its message(in reverse), as a satire for, or by, Christian Filipinos trying to do some machiavellian trick to fool their fellow Christians. There, the “Moro” is concededly the reference for being “smart.”

The “Filipino monkey” is your near-equivalent of “moro-moro.”

  40. Rose: Pilipino din ang may kuwento niyan based on observations noong panahon pa ng kopong-kopong. In fact, Rizal justified the so-called “indolence” of Filipinos during his time.

I can understand his sentiments.

  46. Kaya nga ako naging grizzy after the main character in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “CATS” that I saw in London when it was shown there for the first time. It got me hooked on Webber as a matter of fact. I was looking for it at SFO pero hindi palabas, not even in New York, I guess.

  47. Kawawa ang future generation ng mga pilipino. Tignan mo nga ang nangyari sa generation natin and the present one. For what?

BB and Rose, Thanks for welcoming me. It’s an honor to be the namesake of a good journalist. No I’m not Mr. R. David but like you I admire this person’s disposition. Me, I’m just an ordinary pinoy. Though mulat ang mga mata ko. I also know of people in the other side or who thinks that admin is the way to go. Nasa serbisyo sila at ayers pa ang iba. I just don’t know if their family suffers pero di naman corrupt itong mga ito, talagang bilib lang kay GMA. anti coup sila when it comes to that, kahit noong ’89. Lahat gusto presidente! Why can’t we narrow down our choices? May anecdote dati si Sen.Butz Aquino na minsan daw 10 chinese, 10 malaysians at 10 pinoys in a workshop. They need to elect a leader for the group. Ganyan tayo, nakakalungkot. GMA uses this attitude to her advantage. Looking back when she was a senator nag alaga na sya ng isang class sa PMA (class nila Bangit ’78 yata) dahil alam niya they will grow together, maging senior colonels sila siya naman vice then the rest is history. Ngayon at the very least talagang maghintay ’til 2010 or by extension of esperon ma agitate ang mga few matutuwid na opisyal- swift coup but I certainly doubt it.

  52. randy,

I am not in the service. You’re right, there are still a lot, if not most in the officer corps (especially in the PNP) that considers sticking to the chain of command as the mandate of their profession. They sympathize with Sen. Trillanes’, Gen. Lim, et al, but not with the method. The consensus is that there is no sensible program being followed by their top brass nowadays, definitely no genuine rule of law, and we’ll just have to wait it out after 2010 for a change in the political landscape. After my talks with some of them, it seems that support for any “coup” is highly unlikely. Unless circumstances force them to make a stand, they will suck it up some more (they have a high threshold for pain).
What we really need are opposition bets to genuinely champion the cause for reforms, to take up the issues already brought forward, and come up with a united front that can stand up against whatever the administration will field later. People who can really ACT ON what they tell us they would do.

  53. Apparently, HG, you have not seen a moro-moro, which is something like a mock battle or a drama with guerra-guerra held during fiestas in the province.

I saw one when I was a kid and visited my mother’s hometown. As a Manilan, even as a child used to watching those vaudeville shows at the Clover Theatre at Echague, I found those moro-moro ridiculous and boring but for people who had nothing to entertain them after dark when most provinces did not have electricity, they must be some kind of a luxury.

There is actually nothing wrong with the use of the word “moro-moro.” Parang kapareho din iyan ng “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” Kung lalagyan ng malisya, talagang magiging malicious.

Randy, if you’re not the Randy David we all know, welcome to the blog just the same. Your input is just as valuable. You’re correct in your assessment about the opposition. Sa UNO lahat gusto maging Uno. I bet you no one will slide to running as Vice President. Pare-parehong may ego. If they recruit Lito Lapid to their side, I’m sure papayag si Lapid na maging Bise…he, he.

  55. BB:

During the last election, FYI, the only one who ran as UNO was Senator Trillanes. The others only pretended to be Oppositionists, but I’ve been told that a lot many of them were likewise financed by the crimina squatting at the palace by the murky river. Kaya ngayon wala silang ginagawa. Kaniya-kaniya lang pasikat pero walang substance! Sayang ang boto!

Very good observation, grizzy. Erap was taken for a ride into thinking that his choice of candidates were true opposition. Is there really an opposition? If there is, why are those inside opposing one another?

(I think it’s a misplaced pluralism.)

BB: “Is there really an opposition?” That’s partly my point, above. Concern for plurality in Philippine politics, I think, unnecessarily gives an imprimatur to the “kanya-kanya” system – an old baranganic habit that refuses to die even in modern times. That’s what happened to FVR (refusing to yield to Mitra), and Lacson (breaking ties with Masa which selected FPJ).

Grizzy, yup, you’re right. Haven’t seen a “moro-moro”, but to my surprise, it lives on in some provinces in Luzon. Maybe, people attribute nothing bad to it in the same way pinoys are reacting to “Desperate Housewives” and “Filipino monkey” in the blogosphere.

Sorry for double postings, above (9:08am and 11:12 am). Tried the second one, with slight difference, hoping to pass thru the “moderation.”

  60. We have a reenactment of the BATTLE OF MACTAN and a SINULOG which I have been missing for years now. The battle of Mactan didn’t really hold much significance for me until recently, it reminds me that we Filipinos need to preserve our pride, our heritage, and that we must be careful of foreign influence – we are were born to be free and not to be slaves. If Lapu-Lapu and his men, practically naked, armed with bolos and spears defeated battle tested, armor clad, Spanish soldiers with guns and cannons, we can overcome present obstacles. So, do not despair.
Inspite of our apparent shortcomings, the FILIPINO WILL PREVAIL.

  62. It’s just a name, HG. Tawag doon sa drama that actually depicts Filipino courage and bravery with scenes of skirmishes between the invaders and brave Filipinos. So there is actually nothing wrong about it unlike the “Filipino monkey” etc. insults on Filipino mentality!

Ang pangit for me is to equate the Moslems with terrorism that “moro-moro” is not.

Come to think of it, I grew up in Christian Philippines having those common prejudices against the Moslems. Nur Misuari and some other Moslem scholars at UP were actually my first Moslem contacts. Hindi pa rebel si Nur noon. Patawa-tawa, pangiti-ngiti lang. He was a graduate student on scholarship noon sa UP.
