MBC says it received a threat from Arroyo Cabinet member

From Abs-Cbn online:

The Makati Business Club (MBC) reportedly received a threat from a member of President Arroyo’s Cabinet to stop speaking about the ZTE-national broadband network deal.

MBC Chairman Ramon del Rosario said the threat came in the form of a text message from a cabinet secretary to an MBC board member.

“One cabinet member sent a message through one of our trustees to tell us that if we want a fight….in Tagalog they said, ‘kung gusto ninyo ng laban, di laban’. We will unleash the BIR [Bureau of Internal Revenue] against you,” said del Rosario.

ABS-CBN news correspondent Ricky Carandang said that del Rosario had declined to identify the secretary who made the threat. However, sources told ABS-CBN that the threat came from Trade Secretary Peter Favila.

For his part, Favila denied the information that allegedly linked him as the one who threatened the business group.

“This is the first time I heard this and I am very much interested to find out from Mr. Ramon del Rosario as to who was supposed to have relayed that message to him. This guy knows me better. I am not that kind of a guy who would get myself involved in all these issue of…that the politics is taking place now,” said Favila.

Favila said that “if they are alluding to me” he would like to know where the information came from.

He clarified that the operations of the BIR is not a function of the Department of Trade and Industry.

“That’s another department’s function. Why should I be meddling with another department’s mandate?” said Favila.

Carandang added in his report that the MBC is the latest group to have received threats because of their position on the ZTE controversy.

Earlier this week, the MBC had asked for the resignation of Commission on Higher Education chair Romulo Neri and Environment Sec. LIto Atienza for their alleged involvement in the ZTE-broadband deal.

Star witnesses Joey de Venecia, Rodolfo “Jun” Lozada and journalist Jarius Bondoc also reportedly received death threats.

One of MBC’s members Vivian Yuchengco meanwhile had said the call for Neri and Atienza’s resignation was done without proper consultations and that many members were against it.

“A walang consensus diyan, board lang ‘yan (There’s no consensus, it just the board). I don’t even know if the whole board is aware of it,” she told ABS-CBN News correspondent Alvin Elchico.

“We are a business club we are not in politics,” she added.

She also made a hint on who is behind ouster calls for Atienza and Neri.

“We all know who runs Makati Business Club,” she said, without elaborating.

Yuchengco had led the walkout at the Philippine Stock Exchange at the height of protests prior to the ouster of former president Joseph Estrada.

Del Rosario said club members are prepared for the consequences of their positions.

“We feel that there are times when we must speak out no matter how difficult the consequences might be,” said del Rosario.

The MBC is one of the most influential business groups in the country. Some of its leaders are executives of the country’s largest corporations like Jaime Augusto Zobel, chairman of Ayala Corporation, former Finance Secretary Bobby de Ocampo and Jose Cuisia, president of Philamlife Insurance.

It is not surprising that Vivienne Yuchengco would protect the Arroyo family. The commissions she has made because of her friendship with Mike Arroyo has reached to the hundreds of millions.

According to Ignacio Bunye, some members of the Makati Business Club are against the MBC statement. Aside from Vivienne Yuchengco, he named Archit Bartolome. Isn’t this the guy who was behind the fall of Urban Bank & the cause of the suicide of Borlongan ?

Another person who criticised the MBC statement is Donald Dee. Isn’t he the brother of Dewee Dee who fled the Philippines during Marcos’ time after stealing money by not paying his loans ?

These people are not out to help the country, but out to help themselves. Unless they do a mea culpa like Mr Lozada, they are all part of the group that is destroying the country.

😛 May kinalaman kaya iyan doon sa suspicious death noong anak ni Alfonso that was never solved and hastened the death of his wife na namatay sa sama ng loob. I hate to revive the rumor but a lot of the friends of the said daughter surely want an answer to the mystery of her death. In God’s own due time, justice will surely be done anyway.

Paniki nang tunay si Guriang Korap!

Kulanng pa ‘yang statement ninyo, MBC. Samahan ng aksyon de todas!

  4. Chabeli Chabeli

Vivienne Yuchengco is not a daughter of Al Yuchengco. If I’m not mistaken, she’s only a niece.

In short, magkaibigan sila ni Mike Arroyo at Glori kasi magkakamukha sila—Pangit, in and out! Iyan ang sinasabing “Birds of the same feather flock together!”

The call/text message is really not that hard to trace. Why get into intrigues? If there was a threat then expose the source. Present the proof. Speculations just muddle things and before you know it someone would be saying “crying wolf!”

You see, this division within MBC just spurts out. Before you know it they are fighting one another there. Let us not be distracted.

Magandang hamon iyan.

Magharapan baga.

That’s exactly how Mafia operates. Get back at enemies legally or physically. Strange…but this is the same MBC that conspired in the ouster of Erap. I wonder where this Jose Concepcion belongs…to the Yuchengco group or the other. Joecon must now speak up…

MBC should call a spade a spade. kung gusto nyo mapalitan na ang administrasyon ni GMA, walang condition yan. dapat all out kahit me military involvement. wag kayong matakot ke ass-peron.

It is time to boycott the Yuchenco group of companies – RCBC banks, Grepalife, Malayan Insurance, NeoIT, etc.

“We will unleash the BIR [Bureau of Internal Revenue] against you” – threat.

This is what the Filipinos wanted for all businesses – pay your taxes.

  13. d0d0ng,
    Pls. add:
Lifetime Plans, Mapua Inst. of Technology, Malayan Colleges/High School, House of Investments, RCBC Securities, EEI Construction, Hi-Esai Pharma, Phil. Integrated Ad Agency, Pan Pacific Computers, People eServe, Manila Memorial Park, Funeraria Paz – Sucat, etc.

  14. Vivienne’s biggest client is Mike Arroyo and his mafia gang together with Aboitiz-owned Union Bank, they are into money laundering operations of the biggest syndicate in the country.

After Lacson exposed the Pidal accounts in Union Bank and BPI, the managers of the Pidals have taken to more sophisticated schemes to cover the paper trails. How do you do that? The massive transfers are divided into many smaller transactions and then diluted with the thousands of recurring transactions that banks do daily. They finally end up in offshore accounts, say, Hypovereins.

I encountered such a group composed of Brits, Australians and Canadians who charge 5% off the money delivered – inclusive of a private jet that will take you and your money wherever you like.

  15. Vivienne Yuchengco, and PCCI Chief, now also GSIS Director Donald Dee lead the Arroyo bootlickers from business. (Chabeli is right, Donald is brother to Dewey who fled the country as soon as he obtained a big overseas loan, guaranteed by Marcos) On the other hand, the del Rosario brothers, Alberto (who heads Management Association of the Phils.) and MBC’s Ramon Jr. have been openly critical of Arroyo ever since the NBN-ZTE scandal they were among the first businessmen who called for Abalos’ resignation.

I said it before that if there’s any group Gloria fears most, it’s big business. MAP and MBC, joined by Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference, Foundation for Economic Freedom, and the Action for Economic Reforms wrote the Chinese Embassy last September to express their confidence over China’s Finance Minister Liu Jien Chao’s statement “that the Chinese government takes allegations of corruption seriously.”

They apparently took the cue from US Amb. Kirstie Kenney’s second call for transparency made that Friday after the Senate hearing attended by Romy Neri, and the revelation of Joey De Venecia that Saturday about “mystery man”.

Refresh your memory here ,here, and here.

Check on this Favila too. If he is the company of the DOROBOS, mandurugas din yan!

May pang-blackmail na naman itong si DOROBO! Dito siya magaling. She is a mafia ring leader and she knows exactly how to beat her enemies…Kill or expose!!!

    “Bring them on,” MBC countered.

Gloria Arroyo, tell your lapdogs to continue what they are doing. They are doing a great job recruiting fort he opposition. They should kidnap more potential witnesses and raid more offices of your silent critics.

  18. Tongue,

Agree with you completely — when the business community starts sneezing, Gloria will catch cold.

  19. luzviminda luzviminda

Nakikinabang kasi kaya walang paki. Pweeee!!

this MBC is the root cause of all this brouhaha in philippine politics. They thought that they are the powerful in this county. Look what they did to Estrada, now they are the ones this administation go after.

BIR should go after tax evaders and tax avoiders. THIS EVIL GOVERNEMNT MUST GO!!!

  24. Chabeli Chabeli

    Parasabayan,
From what I heard it was Peter Favila who apparently sent a nasty text to a lady who is a Board of Trustee of MBC.

Peter Favila used to be in PNB – he was known to be a tuta of the son in law of Mr Domingo (who was then head of PNB). Favila’s tuta tendecy was already apparent then. It is no surprise that he is a tuta of Gloria now.

Old timers like Ellen and our atty here might know who this Dewey Dee is.

  26. parasabayan parasabayan

Birds of the same feather flock together. When the tide turns, mahahagip din sila!

Yes, birds of the same feather fuck together.

Dewey Dee caused the biggest banking scare in the 80s; 1981 I believe.

He borrowed heavily from the banks, and was given the loans, because he came from a respected Chinese business family. According to the grandson of Ma Mon Luk, ang mga Chinese daw, pinapautang ng walang collateral, on the strength of their character – that they were honest. Kaya nga, “character loan”.

Maraming nautang si Dewey Dee, I think about a billon pesos, noong ang exchange rate ay 7.6 pesos per dollar. Nag-default si Dewey Dee, and it caused a banking crisis in the Philippines.

Many said that Dewey Dee lost heavily in the commodity futures market. Ask Tongue.

Mayroon ding nagsabing Dewey Dee lost heavily in Vegas. Maaaring both ang tunay na score.

The “old guard” in the Chinese community got mad dahil nadungisan ang honest name ng mga Chinese businessman ng isang bata. I believe Dewey Dee then was either in his 30s or early 40s.

  29. Brownberry Brownberry

Just like what I have expected, our good atty knows Dewey Dee.
I think that famous banking crisis was in the 70s. One thing is sure, he escaped to Canada and might still be there. Or he could have long returned to the Philippines. I was reminded of him after reading this ass hole Donald Dee’s name here. I think the two are closely related by blood.

    BB,
Do you mean brothers and sisters do that?

ive been in business a long time…

its a cardinal rule in Philippine business to NEVER let the BIR ever touch your accounting books.

so if the MBC was indeed paying its taxes properly, there is no need to react as they did.

look at them now, as per the report – pipi sila pagdating sa pagbabayad ng tamang buwis…had they been paying their taxes properly, i wouldve expected them to dare the BIR and allow them (BIR) to examine their accounting books.

Donald Dee is the brother of Dewey Dee.

Donald Dee helped GMA gain a crucial senatorial slot in the then ruling LDP of the Mitra-Fernan slate and he let GMA use his company as the GMA national election campaign headquarters….

Ambassador Donald Dee is the son of the late Shanghai-educated post-World War II self-made garments taipan Rufuno Dee Un Hong. The 57-year-old Donald Dee is Chairman, President and/or Director of many firms, including Yarn Ventures Resources, Inc., Redson Textile Manufacturing Corporation, Hacienda Golf & Country Club Resort, Inc., Export & Industry Bank, Manila Exposition Complex, Inc., and others.

Atty, how is this Donald related to that fugitive Dewey Dee?

  34. Brownberry Brownberry

Thanks atty. I missed your post above. If Donald and Dewey are brothers, then we won’t be surprised they are the same. Dewey has not been yet made accountable for his millions of debts and bank scams. Why not ask Donald where Dewey is and make the latter return to answer for his crime against the Filipino people?
