Cory Aquino has colon cancer

cory.JPGFrom Inquirer online:

Former president Corazon Aquino
is suffering from colon cancer and is in a hospital, her family said Monday.

Aquino’s daughter Kris, a people television host and actress, read a statement on television saying the cancer was discovered when the former president went to have a check up.

A weeping Kris, with her brother, Senator Benigno Aquino III beside her, said their family is asking for “compassion and prayers for our Mom’s recovery.”

“Our mother had suffered from an episode of high blood pressure and difficulty in breathing followed by fever during the week in between Christmas and New Year. Since that time, we became concerned because of her consistent cough, loss of appetite and noticeable weight loss,” she said.

“Our mom wanted to know what was wrong with her, and with her family by her side, she submitted herself to a check-up and several tests. The results showed that our mother is suffering cancer of the colon,” she added.

The Aquino family statement said it was the former president who wanted her condition made public because she “has always believed in being upfront. Over and above anything else, she’s a woman who has lived her entire life entrusting everything to the Lord, and she has always been a woman of great faith.”

“Alam po namin na ang buhay ng aming pamilya ay bahagi na ng kasaysayan ng ating bayan. Desisyon po ng nanay namin na mag-release kami ng statement, para maunawaan ng lahat ang kanyang kasalukuyang kalagayan [We know that the life of our family is part of the history of our nation. Our mother has decided to have a statement released so that everyone will understand her present condition],” it added.

At the same time, she also asked that the former president “be accorded her privacy” during a “very difficult time for our family and, most especially our mother.”

“We’re saddened to hear the news about the condition of former president Cory Aquino,” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in Malacañang. “We join her family and the rest of the Filipino nation in praying that God give her strength during this time of adversity and we pray for her speedy recovery.”

“I’m really sorry. We just have to pray that she’s not very, very serious,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.

Opposition Senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Francis Pangilinan said they are praying for Aquino’s recovery.

“Keep the faith. You have loved our people beyond what many deserved. God in turn has loved you beyond compare. Bing and I pray God’s blessing will ever be with you,” said Pimentel, who served in Aquino’s Cabinet as minister of interior and local government.

“My family and I join the rest of the nation in prayer for former president Cory Aquino’s complete healing. We also pray for strength and courage for the Aquino family as they face this difficult trial,” said Pangilinan, a party mate of Senator Aquino III.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez, who has been known to make biting remarks against Aquino, who has joined those seeking the resignation of Arroyo for alleged corruption, also wished the former president recovery.

“I wish her recovery…the darkest days of Holy week [have] has passed already,” Gonzalez said, adding that colon cancer is curable.

Gonzalez said he has high regards for Aquino despite their disagreements.

“We may disagree on political matters but my regard for her as a person stays,” said Gonzalez, who described himself as a good friend of the former president’s husband.

Aquino, 74, widow of the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr., became president after a popular uprising ousted the dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

Her husband was assassinated on his return the country from exile in 1983. The murder gave birth to the protest movement that eventually led to the downfall of the 14-year Marcos dictatorship.

Usually dressed in her trademark yellow in public, she has remained active in social and political causes. Most recently, she has been attending rallies calling for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

We wish her well and recovery. A very devoted Catholic, I’m sure her faith will help her get through. I don’t want to add any political color to her current state of health. However, it would be a good opportunity for Cory to demand Arroyo’s resignation even if this is going to be her death wish. Expect all political figures to take advantage of her condition. We don’t question those who are close with her and never change in their relationship/treatment of her. But those like Raul Gonzalez who criticized her as well as Malacanang people that caused her grief all these years should stay out of media publicity. They better not visit her just to have photo ups. Cory knows her true friends and those who are sincere. Gloria, do you hear it?

  2. Wishing her well too…

Nakakalungkot ang balita..and personally it made me ask the question..how much more would these people who are fighting for the truth and good of the country suffer..the detained officers, Jun Lozada, and now Mrs. Aquino.. Many criticized her adm..wala siyang alam, corrupt etc. forgetting the fact that the responsibility was thrusted on her..and in humility she accepted..She trusted people like FMR, Enrile and many others who helped her prior..and they took advantage of her weakness. An administration na ginulo ni Honasan..I don’t think she is corrupt..she served the country with purity of purpose..she is a living witness of what it takes to put God first above all..she is a living witness of putting faith and trust in God..I pray for her recovery and pray that she will have the strength to continue the fight for truth and justice..Things happen for the best and what is happening is too..

  4. Reading Bitchevil’s post got me thinking; what if Gloria insists on having an audience with Cory for photo-ops? We know this immoral dwarf has no compunctions about using every single possibility to get her in the limelight.

  5. bitchevil bitchevil

AdeBrux, we have the same mind and thinking. Of course Gloria will. With her very low popularity (people hate her in fact),
inability to face all the scandals and sins she and her family committed, I’m sure GMA will find a way to visit Cory. GMA is good at using emissaries. Cory and GMA used to be friends. Didn’t they conspire to oust Erap? Both have common powerful friends who could work out an opportunity for the visit and photo up. Cory by nature being forgiving may be tempted to issue statement of forgiveness and friendship for the sake of national unity. Then, Malacanang would take advantage of such timely opportunity favoring GMA.

AdB: I would be more surprised if GMA will not take this opportunity for her own “news” photo ops..When I saw her picture touching the relics of St. Therese, her going to communion at the retreat..etc. I was reminded of the Pharisees in the Bible..and Jesus saying not to be like the hypocrites that they were… Many characters in the Bible are brought to life sa atin ngayon in the persons of some who serve the adm…Judas, Pontius Pilate, the Pharisees, the soldiers who played dice, etc. walang paki sa mundo basta nasunod lang ang gusto…and I wonder if their prayer is “Lord, let my will be done.” But then again, this will give us an opportunity to make up our minds as to whose side we would follow…the will of God, and the obedience of the ten commandments bearing in mind what Jesus said..”pick up your cross, come and follow me”..

  7. rose rose

Just yesterday I read Lozada statement na “hirap na hirap na siya at ang kanyang familia” and now this news.. it is quite hard to understand what it takes to seek for the truth and to follow the path of righteousness..pero ang sabi naman ni Gloria we have to sacrifice kuno.. I wonder what sacrifices did she make, is doing and will do..

Many went to their graves without revealing the secrets and what they knew. Cardinal Sin would have made his creator happier had it revealed what he knew about GMA’s evils. Before he died, he could have repented all what he did in conspiring and leading his flock in ousting a legitimate president (Erap). If Sin was as corrupt as the other bishops (he was extravagantly fed by Imelda Marcos), then he could have confessed before he died. Gen. Favian Ver could have also revealed what he know about the Ninoy Assassination who the mastermind was; but like the others, he was silent until his death. Those secrets went with him to his grave. There’s a report that he has a copy of his written statement being kept by his family. Those who were witnesses to crimes died without being heard. Those who knew about highly confidential matters that are of national interest died without sharing the information.

Only a woman of such spiritual strength would say, “Everything is according to God’s will.” (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=112901)

To me, President Aquino IS really an amazing woman !

Who should be slapped & kicked in the ass is siRAULo Gonzalez ! The gall to say that “We may disagree on political matters but my regard for her as a person stays” and who even “described himself as a good friend of the former president’s husband” !!!!! Didn’t Gloria’s Rottweiler insult President Aquino once upon time when President Aquino asked for Gloria’s resignation ? Parang hard to believe that the Rottweiler of Gloria was a good friend of Ninoy – the Rottweiler can’t even tell good from bad ! Stupido talaga !

  10. bitchevil bitchevil

The point that I’m trying to say by my above statements is that Cory with her condition should not back out from her previous stand of demanding GMA’s ouster. But we all know that people in their last days usually become too kind and nice…willing to forgive even their bitter enemies. Cory is such a person. If she truly loves the country, she should continue to demand GMA’s resignation. Who knows, Cory’s call might convince Gloria to finally step down. Imagine someone with cancer telling you to leave Malacanang…

  11. I hope the dorobo will not insist on visiting Mrs. Aquino. Sana naman may konti pang delikadesang natitira ang ungas, for surely she will just stress the ailing ex-president, whose condition must have been worsen by her worries and concern for her beloved country being run like hell by the Pidals. Please maawa naman siya sa maysakit.

I was actually surprised to see Mrs. Aquino losing so much weight in her recent pictures, and I thought she must be taking her fight against this corrupt regime really seriously.

I hope and pray her surgery and her chemo will be successful. It will mean though lesser participation on her part in the rallies from hereon. Sayang!

  12. Our prayer to Cory for her speedy recovery.

  13. bitchevil bitchevil

Cory’s illness favors Malacanang greatly. Cory is at the forefront of movement to oust Gloria. She was always with Jun Lozada in his trips and the two attended Mass together. Even though Jun could still continue and do it alone, Cory’s absence weakens this crusade. Her being incapacitated and this big news about her cancer could divert the media and people’s attention on ZTE and Spratly scams. For one thing, Senator Noynoy Aquino would not be as active in the hearings. Cory’s cancer is a plus for Malacanang. Why does it have to be a good woman like Cory? Why not the evil woman Gloria? Why doesn’t Gloria get all the cancers in her body? Gloria is well and alive. Like kidney transplant survivor Raul Gonzales, Gloria is still alive. Evil people live longer?

  14. Chabeli Chabeli

At the height of the Hello Garci controversy, President Aquino asked Gloria to make the “supreme sacrfice” by resigning. What I heard is that Gloria shouted at President Aquino & told her she was not goint to resign.

  15. bitchevil bitchevil

Gloria shouted at Cory? Many have already issued statements to show support and prayers for Cory. Normally, GMA would immediately jump into such hot news but surprisingly silent about Cory’s illness this time. Well, GMA knows that whatever she says now won’t be believed. GMA has lost all the trusts and respect of the people including Cory’s family. Kris Aquino must be regretting for endorsing GMA in the 2004 election (she got paid P10M anyway).

  16. Elvira Elvira

I’m sure with God’s grace Cory would recover from her sickness. Cory’s task isn’t over yet. The Filipinos still need her very badly!

My special prayers for you from hereon our dear Cory!

  17. bitchevil bitchevil

Cardinal Rosales says he’s praying for Cory. Cory would appreciate more if this uncle of Malacanang’s Medy Poblador also prays for the truth and people.

  18. rose rose

We are all praying for Mrs. Aquino’s speedy recovery..Ang mga alipores ni Gloria ay una sa mga nagpahayag that they are..and I was quite surprised to see siraulo Death of Justice Secretry..Bunye, etc..they are praying for her recovery kasi madagdagan ang pagkamuhi ng mga tao sa kanila..many will support Mrs. Aquino call..for truth and justice..Sa mga nangyayari ngayon..the rice shortage, the illness of Mrs. Aquino..I wonder is there conscience bothering them? They really are people made to steal..steel? (they will rust) We may not understand God’s reason for this at the moment but we all know it is always for the best..and just like Mrs. Aquino let us keep praying putting our faith and trust in Him..

  19. bitchevil bitchevil

I don’t think Cory would do and say what I want…but if I were her, I would tell these Malacanang dogs to shut up telling them she doesn’t need their prayers. If they really want her to recover, they must tell their master to resign once and for all. Nation’s recovery is as important as her recovery. I’m sure Cory has this feeling…

  20. exodusll exodusll

Let us pray for Tita Cory’s recovery.

  21. parasabayan parasabayan

May she get get well soon! She is very actively involved in the “Resign Gloria” movement. She is also seen with Lozada a lot in the prayer meetings.

  22. Kung sabagay, sabi nga, “Only the good die young.” Sometimes, when there seems to be no longer hope for the better, kinukuha na lang ng Diyos ang mga mababait to save them from evil. Hopefully, it is different in the case of Mrs. Aquino. Baka naman this is to make her spiritually stronger despite the present physical weakness for this fight for truth and justice.

It is for her to gain a stronger testimony of the power of faith in the Lord of above, and that truth and justice will eventually prevail. I won’t pray for something awful to come to the evil Gloria Dorobo. I’ll leave her fate to the Lord above. Evil never triumphs. I have faith in that as a matter of fact.

  23. florry florry

Its so sad to hear about former Pres. Cory Aquino not being well. I want to let her know that my prayers are with her and hopefully she will fully recoveer.

  24. parasamasarap parasamasarap

truly, Gloria is the devil herself.

  26. Ellen knows the feeling of one who has undergone chemo therapy that can be either beneficial or fatal.

I had a cousin who was diagnosed with cancer (lymphoma) and died a month after she underwent such therapy due to infection and other complications as the body becomes so very sensible during such treatment. Hopefully, Mrs. Aquino’s condition is not as bad although the loss of weight is very prominent and can be a cause of worry and anxiety, especially considering how a lot many of those powerful enough to bring the devil woman down are the ones taken sooner to the chagrin of those depending on them as PSM has stated above.

    May pag-asa pa ba?

From now on I will be wearing Yellow whenever possible as a symbol for my love and prayers for Cory and as a symbol of protest against the thieving and lying usurper in Malacanang!!!

Social and political ethics demand the highest form of statemanship. We should expect that from PGMA and her minions. Personally I pray for Cory. But I dont know what if PGMA has a tongue cancer. People might not only want to cut her tongue. Perhaps they want to remove everything attached to her tongue and beyond.

  33. dandaw dandaw

If someday Cory will be in her death bed, she should not forget to be a suicide bomber and have a photo ops with Gloria and Assperon. For sure that is what the Philippines needs to stop the misery of the Filipinos if Cory wants to be remembered as a martyr. You take those assholes to court, the judges will say “no evidence, case dismiss”. If the right thinking people will go to the streets, Assperon will have his canons dismantle the rally. If you take your case with Congress and the Senate, GMA’s minions will have bags and bags of money distributed to them. The whole AFP and PNP will side with the moneyed. Even if they kill, they will get a promotion. Hopeless…..

  34. bitchevil bitchevil

Hmmm…you got a good point. People with terminal illness like cancer can be suicide bombers to terminate the Evil Bitch once and for all. At least, they shall be committing a brave and patriotic act by getting rid of the nation’s number one criminal.
