Murder in the making

AFP Hermogenes Esperon has failed to break the spirit of the 28 officers he has charged with various offenses in connection with the military unrest in February 2006 following the leak of the “Hello Garci” tapes the illegitimacy of the Arroyo presidency.

Now, he is trying to kill them by depriving them of adequate air.

Dawn of Tuesday last week, Medal of valor awardee, Col. Ariel Querubin, complained of shortness of breath and chest pains. It was only after four hours, at about 7 a.m., that he was brought to the Camp Aguinaldo hospital, where the X-ray machine was out of order and no medicine available. Querubin had to send his security escort out to buy his medicine. He was later transferred to V. Luna Medical Hospital where he was confined at the Intensive care Unit. He will be brought to the Philippine Heart Center today for angioplasty.

Querubin is confined at the high-security compound of the Intelligence Service of the AFP (ISAFP) in Camp Aguinaldo together with 25 other officers led by Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda. (Brig. Gen. Danny Lim is detained with Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and the other Magdalo officers in Camp Crame while Capt. Dante Langkit is in the Intelligence Security Group compound in Fort Bonifacio.) They were brought there from Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal last February 7 amid rumors of another military uprising against Arroyo.

Relatives of the officers have complained with the Commission on Human Rights about the conditions of the detention center. The primary problem, they said, is the center ‘s terrible ventilation system. This is their description of the place:“The cells have low ceiling. Twelve of the cells have no windows. The only opening are small holes in the upper walls of the cell.”

“In this sweltering summer heat, it’s hell,” one wife said. The detention custodian does not allow installation of air conditioning unit. Electric fans are not enough to mitigate the heat, they said.

The officers and their children who visit them this summer suffer dehydration. They can’t sleep. When they wake up, they are bathed in their sweat.

Army Maj. Leomar Jose Doctolero was brought to the hospital also last week for asthma and bronchitis. Capt. Erick Sales also required treatment when his blood pressure shot up.

When CHR personnel visited the place two weeks ago, the custodians made a hole in the concrete wall that separates the detention area and the MIG 17 compound where there are recreation facilities. Apparently they wanted to make it appear that the detained officers are allowed sports activities.

It’s a lie. They are not. In fact, immediately after the CHR people left, they cemented again the wall.

The detention area is accessible through a narrow path about a hundred meters long. No vehicle can come in.

The CHR people wondered why the officers are in ISAFP, which is not a detention center. ISAFP is where the agents interrogate suspects or try to break persons they want to use against people they want to persecute.

In fact, more than the inhuman detention condition, the question is why are these officers in prison? They have always remained true to their constitutional mandate as the “protector of the people and the State.” They have fought valiantly in the field against those who threaten peace and democracy.

They did not malverse people’s money. They did not participate in the cheating in the May 2004 elections unlike many of the officer Arroyo promoted including their chief jailer, Esperon.

The body that investigated the February 2006 alleged plan to withdraw support from Gloria Arroyo recommended that the charge of mutiny be dropped for lack of legal and factual bases.

The recommended charge of “conduct unbecoming of an officer and gentleman” and other similar minor charges are deemed dropped after no arraignment took place within two years since the offense was supposed to have been committed.

Esperon has tried all legal distortions to break these honorable officers. He failed. He is now trying to deprive them of the most basic need of the human body: oxygen.

He may yet succeed with murder.

  1. Oh my goodness Ellen — I am shocked to hear that this is happening to our honourable men.

Because the asshole Esperon cannot break the spirit, he is now trying to kill them.

Murderers should be shot facing the wall!

  2. The Filipino people should do something about this before things get worse… we want to know why… why indeed

Why are they being made to suffer?

And as you rightly say, more than anything “Why are these officers in prison?”

  3. Esperon, the shameless military murderer should be shot facing the wall by a firing squad!

  4. Why is a crime to criticize the idiot who has stolen votes to be called “President of the Philippines”? And why should these gallant men defy the order of one they know have cheated in the election? Gloria Dorobo is not the republic. These soldiers owe her nothing especially when they do not allow themselves to be bribed and used by her.

Filipinos should actually start reviewing Philippines laws that these idiots have circumvented for their own vested personal interests.

    Kawawang bansa!

  5. Glue thinks she can do what she wants. After all, she has the the General {problems} propping her up in Malacanang. It appears that Glue IS the problem and as such she must go ASAP.

  6. Elvira Elvira

This is downgrading those honorable officers at the lowest level! What are these officers guilty of?
Let us all UNITE and do something to stop those unlawful and inhuman acts of a criminal cheat of staff of the Evilbitch! That Devil in Malakanyang has to go…and SOFORT!!!

  7. Etnad Etnad

Excuse me at thank you na lang.
Excuse me at Thank you na lang ulit.

Esperon and Gloria almost have everything in common. They only difference is he has a “shrinked” balls and she has a “sac”. Both are megalomaniacs, both are drunk and mad and loved to show off who wield the real power. Both are evil, liars, cheaters, thieves and criminals. Both are devil’s incarnate.

Esperon like his evil bitch boss can’t accept that somebody or some groups in his fiefdom has the guts and balls to challenge his authority and harm his queen. And to show who, how and what to do with power, he acted as a judge and executioner, and to hell with the rule of law and human rights of his victims. Oh how he loved to see those he persecuted go down on their knees begging for mercy and his forgiveness. But his expectations did not materialize. He failed to break the spirit of those few good and brave men. His only consolation is his victims are still in detention and some are suffering from different kind of illness. And the way it looks like, even at the brink of death of these officers, he will not be moved by justice and fair application of the rule of law. He will never bend because he thinks he is the law, that even murder is an option.

The irony of it all, the violators of the constitution, those who disregard the rule of law, the cheaters, the thieves in this government are having the days of their lives, while those who risked their lives and went out of their way to uphold the constitution and rule of law and justice are suffering in detention and in brink of death. Is there anything more unfair and injustice than this? Is that how life is in Gloria’s enchanted kingdom?

  9. langhab langhab

in her enchanted kingdom, there lives a princess, a prince, a queen and a king…
    ha? meron pa bang iba?
and they don’t care ever after…

  10. bitchevil bitchevil

Manny Pacquiao just arrived at the airport. Seeing Lito Atienza and Chavit Singson with him sucks !

  11. andres andres

    Kailan ba tayo gigising Pilipinas???

  12. andres andres

    Bitchevil,

Haha!

  13. From a Filipino in Canada, who feels concerned about what’s happening to honorable Filipinos in the country:

    Good morning and Happy easter!

    I’m a fil-canadian and regular reader of malaya.com

I pity those honorable detainees and i feel sorry for their situation right now; my question is: is Gen. Esperon really above the law for maltreating these gallant officers and soldiers?

How come our honorable senators are not doing anything to charge Gen esperon and his cohorts? We know that those detainess are being detained illegally-why not somebody ask the lawyers league or those civil society movements to file a case against Gen. esperon and his henchmen?

Are our countrymen too afraid to do anything against this tyrannical, murderous government of GMA? Is there no more justice in the Philippines?

  14. bitchevil bitchevil

Our Kababayan, the Fil-Canadian, is not alone in his concern. Most Filipinos abroad, the OFWs are concerned too. What they can do is to make representation with their respective government by bringing to their adopted countries the true situation in the Philippines. Better still, they should organize protest actions to let the world know how corrupt and evil this Arroyo government is. If there are Tibetans in other countries including the Tibetan-Canadians who express their voice, the Filipinos who number significantly in other countries could do the same. We understand how busy they are trying to earn a living for their families back home. But if they keep silent and do not do anything, they could be perceived as displaying a “do not care” attitude or are happy with the present administration. They need to be reminded that all their hard work and money shall be useless if their families cannot live peacefully in the Philippines. Do they want their hard earned money to be taken away by those corrupt officials? They pay taxes and these taxes go to these corrupt officials’ pockets. Think about that…our Kababayan abroad.

  15. Dr.Kwak Dr.Kwak

I just don’t understand the logic behind severely subjecting these honorable gentlemen to humiliation and physical abuse. The word “murder” seems too light in describing the acts perpetuated by these “evil system of power and greed”against those they perceive as the enemy of their regime. Are the “good guys” from this administration ceased to be sane and civilized? Too sad, their punitive ways and acts speak of more barbarism at its most primitive form? Ama patawarin sila at di nila alam ang kanilang ginagawa.

  16. Dr.Kwak Dr.Kwak

I support the idea that it’s about time for the Senate (and Congress?) to investigate the way our detained soldiers are treated at the military camps. It’s about time to warn these good generals, serving on the evil whimps and caprices of their commander-in-chief, to refain from inducing human rights abuses against any kind of prisoner. Nobody is above the law, it spares no one.

  17. Gabriela Gabriela

These officers have not been convicted. Why are they being punished?

I would have wanted to say, if anything bad happens to these honorable officers, it will be on the conscience of Arroyo and Esperon. But then, these people have no conscience anymore. They are so pre-occupied with their insecurity and paranoia. That’s why they are taking it on these officers, who are respected. Unlike them who are objects of derision.

  18. Indeed! Who is Esperon to have such power and right to order this kind of injustice and inhumanities to these gallant men who have not been properly in fact indicted yet, much less found guilty to be punished as being deprived of their human rights to receive proper treatment when they are sick for instance?

This reminds me of a Filipino prisoner in a Japanese prison where I did translation. He was convicted for drug trafficking and peddling, and his kidneys were badly damaged by the drugs that he was taking in, and he had to be confined and go through some dialysis during his incarceration rendering him incapable of doing any job in prison even just to save for his fare back to the Philippines when he was released.

On the day he was interviewed for parole, he surprised everyone when asked to be allowed to finish his jail term. He told the parole board that he still wanted to live that was why he would like to stay in prison so that he could get free medication (dialysis) that he would not be able to afford in the Philippines on his return there. The members of the parole board gaped in disbelief.

  19. The question is, “How do we end all these?” While there is merit to the argument of taking the legal course, the situation is in such an urgent state we cannot avoid doing some shortcuts to stop it now.

The concern remains, “what acts short of legal are acceptable to the populace?” If that can be determined, then go all for it!

  20. BTW, Ellen I also read Bambi Harper’s column today she had me laughing aloud that my kids were giving me silly stares. Love her take on Barbers.

  21. parasabayan parasabayan

Ellen, what ever happened to the prescription period of their cases? The cases were supposed to have been dropped at the end of February.

I believe in KARMA. Whatever the evil bitch and asspweron had done so far to these men of honour and their families will likewise be done unto them. It may not be directly to them but to those they care about.

Jamby, Biazon and Lacson visited these officers when they were in Tanay when their living conditions were improved over time. The soldiers themselves improved their living conditions with the help of their friends and immediate families. Airconditioners were donated to make the conjugal rooms bearable. Screens were put in the custodial center to ward off the huge mosquitoes, protecting the young ones who came to visit them. Stoves, washing machines, billard tables, tables and chairs were also donated by everyone. A basketball court was erected for their daily exercise. All these are missing in the current detention center they are in.

  22. bitchevil bitchevil

Parasabayan, most of us like you believe in Karma but this evil Gloria believes in “Kama” (bed).

  23. parasabayan parasabayan

Golez delivered a speech not too long ago in the lower house to address the issues of these men. The plea fell on deaf ears.

The senate is very busy with the ZTE deal and the lower house very busy with the Spratly’s. Apparently, our legislators are too busy to even address the health issues of these men. They are not convicted villains! While Leviste who murdered his best friend is out, another rapist of an eleven year old was given temporary liberty and now a double murderer Villarosa was released, here are men who fought valliantly for the country(two of them- Querubin and Parcon) are even Medal of Valor awardees. The evil bitch salutes them but look how powerful asspweron is! He put them in jail and now he wants to MURDER them!

  24. parasabayan parasabayan

I heard that in the cells they are in now, these are not ventilated. I am reminded of the cells in Auschwitz where the Nazis killed millions of jews. The prisoners who were to be shot soon were put in 1 1/2 meter by 2 meters room close to the execution wall. The rooms only had about two inches by 6 inches holes in them way above the room just enough to get the sound of the bullet come through. But even then, prisoners were not kept in these rooms for long. These detention cells were meant to be for detention prior to execution. Baka naman ito ang balak ni asspweron! Why does he not just execute them and cut this charade short! But since he is a COWARD, he wont do it! Let us wait until all his bodyguards are gone. I wonder if he can even leave his house freely. Tignan lang natin ang tapang niya then. Unless of course his patron, the evil bitch will put him in a cabinet position and give hime the “executive privilege”. It is time for the evil bitch to scratch his back like what asspweron has done on her all this time.

Sabi ng isang pastor na nagsermon, there is so much evil in the government today. People do something na kung minsan ay ayaw mo nang patawaring pa dahil paulit-ulit. Sa mga taong hindi na kayang pigilan at baguhin ng hustisya ng tao, to pray for them is a waste of time. We are untouchable and unstoppable, get out of our way.”

All it takes is the resolve to defend these honorable men.

  27. bitchevil bitchevil

FYI, when Manny Pacquiao attended Mass at Quiapo Church after his arrival, the officiating priest likened Manny to a missionary and saint. Can you imagine that? A priest idolizing another human? Manny could have handed to this priest a white envelope taken from part of his victory in Las Vegas so much so that the priest idolizes Manny.

Over in Baguio City, Mike Arroyo gave an Easter message to a news reporter saying “Let’s forgive and forget”. If he means we should forgive and forget all his crimes, he better go to hell !

  28. Mrivera Mrivera

    nakakahiyang opisyal!

  29. Valdemar Valdemar

    Ale Luya San Pacquiao!

  30. Bitchdevil: FYI, when Manny Pacquiao attended Mass at Quiapo Church after his arrival, the officiating priest likened Manny to a missionary and saint.

    *****
Si Manny na babaero rin, a missionary and a saint?

    supot!

  32. patria adorada patria adorada

Wala bang magawa sina Sen.Lacson,Sen.Biason at Sen.Honasan sa kanila? Kahit man lang makabalik sa Tanay.

  33. nelbar nelbar

  34. rose rose

Senators Biazon, Lacson and particularly (Honasan) by their silence in not doing anything for these men, brothers they claim to be (all graduates of PMA) are in agreement with the “punishment” of brother Esperon. With brothers like them who would want to be in their “family”.. I forgot PMA adopted Gloria nga pala..mas malakas si Ate Glo..Mabasa nga uli ang “In search of Meaning” ni Frunkle…

  35. bitchevil bitchevil

One by one, witnesses and prospective witnesses are being eliminated. Another Comelec official implicated in the “Hello Garci” tape scandal was just shot and killed in Manila. As the saying goes, dead man cannot talk. If his killing favors Malacanang and Garcillano, then Malacanang is a sure suspect. Where’s Bedol?

  36. So this is what they mean by “Rule of Law?” Arbitrary detention? Where is this rule of law Gloria and her cohorts are always talking about? Where and when does it apply? And why isn’t there any strong voice coming our from our leaders, where is the “righteous indignation” we expect from righteous leaders? Or aren’t there any?

Each time I read about the plight of these officers it makes me sick to the stomach.

  37. This is a clear violation of human rights right? Why isn’t there any protest coming from this group? Who do we talk to? Who do we write to?

  38. parasabayan parasabayan

Jug, the senate already knows about these soldiers’ plight. Three of the senators visited them in Tanay. In the lower house Rep Golez made a position on the officers’ current conditions( Tanay was heaven and this place they have now is hell!). Their case is pending in the Supreme Court after the lower courts junked similar pleas. No one seem to care. No one want to confront the vindictive duo-the evil bitch and asspweron. The Human Rights International already visited their current cells and came up with recommendations. Apparently, the AFP showed that they were in compliance with the citations, only to put back the same conditions after the Human Rights people left the vicinities. No one seem to have the ability to defend these men. It is very sad because these men always fought their best for the country. Now that they need the defense themselves, no one seem to remember all the good things they had done. The only person that matters seem to be the evil bitch! She has mastered the art of bribing and corruption and even mafia like liquidation of her opponents. No one in a country of 90 million has the heart to fight for these men of honour! I guess only GOD watches over them now. May they endure all the hardships they are going through now.

Maybe an International expose is needed. The evil bitch will be afraid of this because she is always projecting to the world how great she is!

  39. Now here’s another murder in the making:

Jimmy Soledad and his wfie Clarita were abducted on Holy Thursday in Cavite by about 10 armed me. A few days later their photo appeared in a tabloid and the caption said they were in the office of Region 4 Intelligence Chief. When relatives and human rights workers went there, they were told the couple was not there. Until today they have not been surfaced.
