Obama clinches nomination

From MSN:

Hillary Clinton open to being Obama’s vice president

Chicago- Sen. Barack Obama clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, becoming the first black candidate to lead a major party into a campaign for the White House, The Associated Press reported based on its tally of delegates.

Obama arranged a victory celebration at the site of this summer’s Republican National Convention — an in-your-face gesture to Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who would be his opponent in the race to become the nation’s 44th president.

Obama, 46, of Illinois, bested Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York in a historic campaign that sparked record turnouts in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial and gender divisions within the party.

In an afternoon conference call among Clinton and members of the New York congressional delegation, Clinton signaled an interest Tuesday in joining the ticket as running mate but stopped short of conceding to Obama or dropping out of the race, a participant said. On the call, Rep. Nydia Velasquez said she believed the best way for Obama to win over Latinos and members of other key voting blocs would be to take Clinton as his running mate.

“I am open to it,” Clinton replied, if it would help the party’s prospects in November, said the participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the call was a private matter.
The AP said Obama sealed his victory based on public declarations from delegates as well as from an additional 22 who had confirmed their intentions to the news service. The count also included five delegates Obama was guaranteed as long as he gained 15 percent of the vote in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.

NBC News has been maintaining its own tally of delegates, which showed Obama’s being 11 delegates short of the 2,118 needed. NBC News said it would not confirm Obama as the presumptive nominee until all private commitments by delegates were made public.

Delegates needed

Clinton stood ready to concede that her rival had amassed the delegates needed to triumph, according to officials in her campaign.

“If he happens to get the numbers, then Hillary will congratulate him as the nominee,” Clinton’s campaign chairman, Terry McAuliffe, told NBC News. But campaign officials stressed that Clinton did not intend to suspend or end her candidacy in a speech Tuesday night in New York.

Obama’s triumph was fashioned on prodigious fundraising, meticulous organizing and his theme of change aimed at an electorate opposed to the war in Iraq and worried about the economy — all harnessed to his innate gifts as a campaigner.

With her husband’s two White House terms as a backdrop, Clinton campaigned for months as the candidate of experience, a former first lady and second-term senator ready, she said, to take over on Day One.

But after a year on the campaign trail, Obama won the kickoff Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3, and he became something of an overnight political phenomenon.

“We came together as Democrats, as Republicans and independents, to stand up and say we are one nation, we are one people and our time for change has come,” he said that night in Des Moines.

A video produced by Will I. Am of the Blackeyed Peas, built on Obama’s “Yes, we can” rallying cry, quickly went viral. It drew its 1 millionth hit within a few days of being posted.

Enthusiastic audiences

As the strongest female presidential candidate in history, Clinton drew large, enthusiastic audiences. But Obama’s were bigger still. One audience, in Dallas, famously cheered when he blew his nose on stage; a crowd of 75,000 turned out in Portland, Ore., the weekend before the state’s May 20 primary.

Clinton countered Obama’s victory in with an upset five days later in New Hampshire that set the stage for a campaign marathon as competitive as any in the last generation.

“Over the last week I listened to you, and in the process I found my own voice,” she told supporters who had saved her candidacy from an early demise.

In defeat, Obama’s aides concluded that they had committed a cardinal sin of New Hampshire politics, forsaking small, intimate events in favor of speeches to large audiences inviting them to ratify Iowa’s choice.

It was not a mistake they made again — which helped explain Obama’s later outings to bowling alleys, backyard basketball hoops and American Legion halls in the heartland.

Clinton conceded nothing, memorably knocking back a shot of Crown Royal whiskey at a bar in Indiana, recalling that her grandfather had taught her to use a shotgun and driving in a pickup truck to a gas station in South Bend, Ind., to emphasize her support for a summertime suspension of the federal gasoline tax.

As other rivals quickly fell away in the winter, the strongest black candidate in history and the strongest female White House contender traded victories on Super Tuesday, the Feb. 5 primaries and caucuses across 21 states and American Samoa that once seemed likely to settle the nomination.

But Clinton had a problem that Obama exploited, and he scored a coup she could not answer.

Pressed for cash, Clinton ran noncompetitive campaigns in several Super Tuesday caucus states, allowing her rival to run up his delegate totals.

Wala natalo.

I think the Democratic Party should re-examine their Nomination process, it’s too long and divisive and lot of dirty campaigns involved, it’s self-defeating..

  3. bitchevil bitchevil

Next would be to convince Obama to take in Clinton as his running mate. Obama-Clinton team is unbeatable. It would be a landslide victory for the Democrats.

  4. Nadaya si Clinton? No such thing, Valdemar. Hindi naman Pilipinas ang America even when Filipinos try hard to emulate all the things that make the Americans hateful, even their prejudice against blacks na akala mo naman puti din sila!

I am an Obama supporter as a matter of fact even when my folks are traditionally Republican. A lot many members of our church, too, are supporting with a lot many of them switching to Democrat in November.

Now they are talking of a dream ticket of Obama-Clinton. Like many of the supporters of Obama, frankly speaking, I am not happy about this with Clinton herself not being happy about it, and giving McCain to rub salt to the wound. It’s giving perverts ideas as a matter of fact of her replacing Obama in time with someone planning to assassinate him before or even after the election when he can win by landslide. It’s errie to even think about this but with the kind of history the Americans have, this is not impossible.

Nakakatakot isipin pero posible. Diyos mahabagin!

Obama was very gracious of Clinton in his recent speech. He was all praises for her. I heard that Clinton mentioned she’s willing to take the number two spot. The Democrat leaders should now sit down and work on a Obama-Clinton ticket. MY fear is…don’t laugh now…Obama might be assassinated and Clinton would succeed him. There are still lots of hardcore whites out there who cannot take an African-American for President. Heaven forbids…Obama must double and triple his security even before the November election. I’m sorry for painting a scary negative picture…but anything can happen in America.

  6. Bitchdevil:

I heard Clinton’s speech, but there is no hint that she is quitting even at this stage. Pangit iyong ipinagpipilitan na meron siyang ipinagmamalaking 18M votes that Obama cannot get without her being in. That is not what America is supposed to be. Nakakasuka more like.

  7. I like Obama because he understands the minority, and definitely Asians with his background of growing up in Indonesia and Hawaii. The wife, likewise, is a very charismatic lady wowing members of our church in Utah as a matter of fact. Hopefully, the world will be at peace with him as president of the USA.

I’m looking forward to travelling again in style, no more plastic forks, spoons and knives and we can have those saucy steaks on flight again!!!

  8. Ayoko si Hillary. Marumi ring maglaro iyan. Lots of suhol ang ginawa kaya naubos ang pera niya that she probably hoped to get kung maboto siyang presidente. At least, si Obama, walang sinuhulan. All volunteers lang.

  9. parasabayan parasabayan

Maliit ang tenga ni Obama in relation to his head.

obama played by the rules. it is just fair he won.hilarys dream is to be president and i donot think she has given that up. it may be catastrophy for obama to choose her as vp candidate. it will be construed as a sign of weakness if he gave up to the pressure of giving the vp candidacy to her. even if they win together, having her and her husband around will make him a lesser president. question is if he believe he can win without her.

  11. Kapal din ni Hillary. It reminds me of the time when she refused to condemn her husband who should have been impeached for his lack of morality because she did not want to leave the White House. Nakakahiya din ang pagki-cling niya sa power. Unbelievable!

Sure she is the face of change. She may not be aware of it, but she hers is another face of graft and corruption walang pinag-iba sa graft and corruption ni Gloria Dorobo. Kung sabagay marami ring skeletons in her closet ang ambisyosang iyan. Namatay nga iyong ilan bago sila ibuking!

Pag nagkataon katapusan na ng mundo.

  12. Eggplant Eggplant

The super delegates are not there for just nothing. They are the rich and the super rich in America. They are the king makers. They are the directors of the American corporation. All have bested interest. They call the shots and the executve conduct the dirty job that is administration according to their set pattern. Kennedy was assassinated because he wanted his own way. To leave the war in Iraq depends on the pattern of business. Will they make money?

  14. sioktong sioktong

General Collin Powell was interviewed by 60 minutes a long time ago. I believe he also discussed in his book about his conversation with former Secretary of State Margaret Albright. In the interview they discussed the invasion of Kuwait. When Iraq invaded kuwait in 1990, Margaret Albright told General Powell to nuke Iraq and she also said what is the nuclear might of the United States for if we will not use it? I am not saying that all women are like Sec. Margaret Albright. What I am trying to say is if you put a woman in a position where she can decide whether to push the nuclear button or not is frightening. In my opinion only, if a woman become a President of US then it will be the start of Armageddon.

  15. sioktong, depende iyan sa babae.

Angela Merkel is doing a good job in Germany while many of her male predecessors failed to bring them back to black. She is achieving modest growth at a slow but steady pace.

There’s an interesting article in Newsweek by Howard Fineman, “Clinton Kabuki”.

Fineman said Obama does not want to get Clinton as VP. what he expects to happen is this:

“But there is talk that Obama will tentatively offer, or make some kind of gesture in that direction of the VP slot to Hillary, but ONLY, ONLY on the understanding that she promise in advance (through intermediaries if not directly) NOT to accept! “She doesn’t want it and would not take it,” said one source very close to her. “But she would like to be asked and that is the Kabuki theater we are about to engage in.” (Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson called the notion “silly,” adding: “She has already said she would whatever she could to help the Democrats take the White House back.”)”

  17. norpil norpil

obama defeated the most powerful democratic party family by bringing a lot of young people hoping for a change. superdelegates are people who have held or still hold office as members of the democratic party. a lot of them were supporters of hilary at the start but changed their positions in accordance with the political wind at their states.

  18. sioktong sioktong

Bitchevil, I pray that your fears won’t happen (MY fear is…don’t laugh now…Obama might be assassinated and Clinton would succeed him.)

Remember last month, Hillary cited what happened to Robert Kennedy, assassinated in a hotel in Los Angeles while campaigning, as the reason why he was not conceding despite the fact that everybody was predicting she would lose.

Bad taste. Imagine waiting for you opponent to be assassinated so you could be your party’s standard bearer. For all we know that’s the reason why she wants to be Obama’s VP.

Grabe ang ambisyon nito. Parang si Gloria Arroyo.

  21. chi chi

    Valdemar,

I believe you. In fact, there’s a news that a billionaire capitalist who used to pumped up Malaysia’s economy is behind the democrats internal affair. It was at CNBC the other week.

  23. chi chi

Obama definitely needs to reconcile with Hilary’s supporters, or he will lose in the swing states especially in the Appalachian white dominated states.

  25. Gabriela: Remember last month, Hillary cited what happened to Robert Kennedy, assassinated in a hotel in Los Angeles while campaigning…..Bad taste. Imagine waiting for you opponent to be assassinated so you could be your party’s standard bearer. For all we know that’s the reason why she wants to be Obama’s VP.

your scenario of Obama being assassinated if ever he and clinton wins the general election is not far-fetched. This has been going on among and within the black communities in the USA. If the mob can do it on a Kennedy and MLK, there is no reason why they cannot do it on a black guy. That’s the reason why Clinton supporters are pushing Hillary to accept the VP. In the meantime, let’s keep watching.

Americans will not gamble with Obama.

Mas maganda ang agenda ni Clinton kesa kay Obama,Obama is only instigating chaos in the mind of Americans regarding ng Bush Policies. ,

    cocoy,

Change is the campaign slogan of Barack. What change?, sabi ng maraming ‘merkano. It’s the economy, stupid!

Didn’t he know that world leaders had done that before and failed?

  31. parasabayan parasabayan

Mukhang tahimik si Hillary. Ano kaya ang binabalak niya?

Obama won the primaries because of the young generation. But the bottom line is mas maraming baby boomers ang America and most of them may go for Mc Cain. But if Hillary pushes to be an independent, baka nga matalo si McCain. Pare pareho tayo ng analysis but let us see what Hillary will do. She does not give up so easily.

  32. PSB: But the bottom line is mas maraming baby boomers ang America and most of them may go for Mc Cain.
    *****

I don’t think so. It’s more part of the propaganda of the white supremacists. I am in an egroup of progressive Americans, baby boomers who were mostly Republicans but are now turning Democrats because they think Obama is a better candidate than McCain or Clinton. If the Democrats who supported Clinton vote now for McCain, it only shows that the racial issue against blacks in the US is still very much a reality. In short, puro arte lang all this talk about equality and equal opportunity in good ole USA.

Hopefully, Obama can win, and show what a minority like him can do to make the American dream a reality. He has a great chance to win because Americans are fed up of the mad man at the White House. All he needs in fact is seek the best minds to help him in the difficult task of making USA what God has intended it to be, a land of milk and honey, “a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.” (2Nep1:7)

I bet you, marami ring mapapahiyang mga pilipino who are as prejudiced against blacks na kasingkulay nila as those old-fashioned white supremacists.

  33. Who knows, the Hamas may be convinced to put down their arms by the likes of Obama, who definitely would have better options because of his Moslem orientations? He is not Moslem, I understand but he was brought up in a Moslem community in Indonesia and have had a lot of Moslem friends whom he can tap during negotiations with so-called or suspected “terrorists,” a labelling that should actually be stopped.

It’s in fact a matter of sincerity. If the previous white negotiators failed, it was because they were insincere. Carter, in fact, admitted that, and too bad for him that when he realized his mistake, he cannot convince them anymore to trust him!

Truth is I was prejudiced against the PLO of Arafat myself because of my US-cultured prejudices that I was very much against Japan’s recognition of the PLO. Japan in fact was one of the first countries that gave Arafat recognition, but it turned out to be a good move. Arafat was pacified.

Sabi nga, “Try, and try again until you succeed.” It’s the best option Obama has to solve the problems of the world brought about by US war mongerings! As the old adage goes, “Love begets love, hate begets hate!”

  34. For all you know, Chi, even McCain is taking up Obama’s slogan “Change!” that apparently majority of Americans now crave to attain. I don’t see why it cannot be as valid when it’s Obama saying it.

  35. chi chi

    Yuko,

I just don’t believe in Barack, he has so many unknowns. And Hilary and Mac Cain brought those unknowns to the fore.

  36. myrna myrna

well, mas mabuti nga siguro na mag independent si hillary! 🙂

oh well……sabagay, we really have to be concerned, kasi whatever happens in U.S., apektado ang lahat. when america farts, the entire world can smell the foul odour! hahahha

  37. dandaw dandaw

Don’t worry mga bloggers. I heard down here Jesse Jackson is the VP, Louis Farrakan is the Secretary of State and Al Sharpen is the Secretary Of Defense. I bet you that will be the time you bloggers are waiting for. That will also be the time to travel to America and witness the inauguration of these magnetic line up. Time for Grizzy to join the “Million Man March” “Change” “Change”

  38. But we know now, Chi, that it was all to discredit Obama with Clinton now admitting that Obama is indeed a candidate material, even assuring her fellow Jews that Obama will be fair to them.

What I have gathered as a volunteer for Obama is enough to convince me that he is par excellence, good enough to try to prove that even a black man can be a good US president. Lalo na siya who is part American and part African unlike many black Americans who are in fact more American than African.

And with the kind of orientation he has had, I don’t think he can be as narrow-minded as the other racist candidates, et al with white and even black skin. I try to listen when he speaks spontaneously, not when he reads those prepared speeches that have been revised even to deceive. I guess, I can understand the language he speaks because I am in similar advocacies he and his wife are active in.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Si McCain and Clinton subok na—sa pambobola, that is!!!

  39. Myrna: well, mas mabuti nga siguro na mag independent si hillary!
    *****

Unfortunately, Myrna, over in the US, dalawa lang talaga ang binoboto ng mga tao. Iyong mga independent, no chance to win even when they can afford to pay voters as in the case of that billionaire with a French-sounding name or Nader, who never wins but never gives up. Voters there are either Republican or Democrat.

Iyong kapatid ko ngang bakla inaaway daw ng nanay ko ngayon kasi Democrat siya while my mother is a dye in the wool Republican. Me? Palipat-lipat kung sino ang hindi war monger although this is the first time that I have involved myself directly in US politics.

  40. The question people in America always ask themselves,”Would You buy a house in a black neighborhoods?” Ask any real state agent.

  41. Huwag kang magbiro, Dandaw. I have an invitation to go to the White House when Obama wins. Iyong invitation ko nga to have a special dinner with him binigay ko na lang sa bayaw ko although previously, when he went to Oakland last year, I had the opportunity to shake hands with him.

That is, if he wins because majority of Americans are now over with their prejudices and discriminations against blacks! That is definitely change to me.

  42. cocoy: The question people in America always ask themselves,”Would You buy a house in a black neighborhoods?” Ask any real state agent.
    *****

Naniniwala naman ang pinoy diyan, you bet. O di naisahan tuloy sila ng mg Vietnamese at intsik as what has happened to a place in Oakland near the Amtrak where a daring friend of mine bought a condo and is now earning him big money renting out to wealthy blacks, Chinese and Vietnamese!!!

  43. As for Obama being assassinated, I won’t be surprised. Marami talagang mokong sa America. Doon nga sa mall sa malapit sa amin, madalas may barilan. Nope, hindi mga itim. Mga Latino sabi ng kapatid ko. Madalas pa nga pilipino ang mga kasangga.

Just a few days ago, a nephew of mine asked me to correct and improve his composition on gun control in the USA. Over here, we don’t have to worry about such thing because even policemen are not exempted. They cannot carry guns out of duty, or they get busted.

  44. dandaw dandaw

For sure Obama is very truthful that his uncle is the liberator of Aushwitz except he does not have an uncle because his mother is the only child. His wife for the first time in her life that she is proud to be an American because her husband is a candidate for the office of the President. Obama was going to church for twenty years and listening to the same pastor who married him and baptized his children, listening to the same sermon about racism, hate, Ayers, the “weather underground” man that he associated also for twenty years. Congratulations, fellow bloggers, we are stuck with this unknown.

  45. On the contrary, Myrna, takot na takot si McCain kay Obama kaya nga gusto niyang si Hillary ang lumaban sa kaniya. Kaya usual tactic, siraan si Obama. Diyan magaling ang kano as a matter of fact.

But as of this instance, matatag pa rin siya. So, with the wife na matalinong sumagot. What they are now in fact, they owe it to God!!!

  46. Iyong slip ni Obama, Dandaw was corrected by his own uncle as a matter of fact.

I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

  48. parasabayan parasabayan

I am just wondering though why the pastor of his church does not seem to support Obama causing him to leave his church. There is a big “unknown” with Obama. Theory is different from reality. McCain knows the ins and outs of the business called “politics”. The only thing is he is older. Let us see how the campaign plays out.

  49. parasabayan parasabayan

Obama has so many supporters too including some underworld characters.

  50. I don’t know about the underworld supporters, PSB, but what is important is that the guy has enough incentives to find solutions to the problems created by Bush for all mankind. Anyway for those interested in lambasting, etc. directly Obama here’s the lead:

  51. Truth is I have friends in the underground myself, but I don’t consider myself one of them. In the case of Obama, it is just but natural that he would get to meet those people because he is a lawyer and must have defended a lot of them in court, and it’s possible that a lot of them know gratitude to show their gratitude to him by supporting him. Point is hopefully he does not tolerate their illegal activities knowing good from evil, right from wrong, etc.

I’m actually interested in finding out how the “terrorists” will respond to him. Anyway, he has assured US voters that he was not talking to the hoodlums but to leaders of countries Bush has tagged as enemies of the USA on diplomatic ground.

  52. Ooops, mali, this should be “….he is not talking to the hoodlums….”

  53. norpil norpil

obama is quite popular also here in europe and the primaries generated a lot of interest. for me, between mccain and obama is a choice between youth and the aged. unfortunately, only americans can vote in an american election, although whoever wins will have a lot of impact thruout the world. if obama wins, americans will once again be not ashamed while travelling around europe.

  54. Obama is the most leftwing of all senators in the US senate. It will take more than just African Americans, big money, young college students and quiche and white wine drinkers lefties elites to bring about an Obama US presidency.Barack Obama has a total disconnect among white voters, especially the predominant Catholic and Reagan Democrats, the blue collar and working man. Hillary Clinton broke new voting records among white voters.

The problem with Barack Obama’s “change we can believe in” his mantra, is only change for a few and the neglected few of his core of supporters. He’s not for the majority of Americans.Actually his campaign has been on the wrong track from the beginning with inadequacies.Like wanting to grant drivers licenses for illegal aliens. Also fallout from Barack Obama’s pastor the Reverend Jeremiah Wright anti-white, anti-American, anti-rich hate preaching’s from his pulpit.

Compounding with Obama’s danger that majority of Hillary Clinton “White” supporters and voters have said that they will not vote in any shape or form for Barack Obama in the general elections. It’s a dangerous sign for the Democratic Party to be able to seat a Democratic president in the White House.

  55. Valdemar Valdemar

All the enemies of the yankees dont trust caucasians anymore even those in Europe and Israel. They just abhor white dominance. But Obama is the welcome change that heralds the change in their hearts. Religion may not be at center stage we thought to be in the issue, color is.

  56. chi chi

Trouble with Barack is he just dribbles…all generalities as Myrna said, has a total disconnect with the working class as cocoy mentioned, and slow in judgement as what happened in the Wright’s case.

Yes Cocoy, Clinton delivered voters that Obama did not. But realities of American election is different from Pinas. Ganyan din natalo si Gore.

Pareho silang umamin that economy is not their strong points. Alam mo naman ang hanap-pera ko, heheh!

  59. dandaw dandaw

Yes, Cocoy, I hope the change “we can believe in” will work for the better meant of the free world because around here we are not sure of this guy. As they say “better the devil that we know than the devil we don’t know”. Fox News, Glenn Beck, and Conservative medias are all saying this is not going to work. Only the radical media and radical people the lift wing media, the devil worshipers are excited about this change. If you were listening to your pastor for 20 years about racism, “Goddam America” you think you will not believe what your pastor is saying? I rest my case.

Garantisadong papalo yan pataas.

“Please tell the president he is holding the message upside down.”

  62. chi chi

    Dandaw,

I see you know your business, ha!ha!ha!

  63. chi chi

Yes Tongue. Nakatali na and then pagtaas biglang benta.

OK toh a! Golly, iyong signature ng ungas “Mickey Arroyo, Candidate for Senator in 2010.” Kapaaaaaaaaaal!

  65. Tongue, ok yung bin Ladin message mo. Sana you were able to share with us before I went to Pakistan. I could have shared it with the military guys that we met there.

  66. Tongue,
