Christening on Christmas day in Tanay

Life goes on even behind barbed wires.

Last Dec. 25, Jeanne Clarisse Sababan, four -month old daughter of Capt. James and Cletty Sababan was christened in an early morning mass inside the Custodial Center in Camp Capinpin, Tanay where 17 of the 28 officers charged with mutiny (re Feb. 2006 non-event) are detained.

Here are some of the pictures. I’ll post more photos and make more kwento later. I have to treat my nieces and nephews to the Festival mall.

There were 16 of us Ninangs and Ninongs. Most were also co-detainees of the father, Capt. James Sababan like Capt. Ruben Guinolbay and Capt. Joey Fontiveros. Marine Lt. Belinda Ferrer,is also ninang but she is at the Marine Hospital in Fort Bonifacio.

Other ninangs were wives of the detained officers like Maria Flor Querubin, wife of Col. Ariel Querubin; Gay Parcon, wife of Lt. Col. Custodio Parcon; Anne Fernandez, wife of Major Domingo Fernandez; Maze Cordero, wife of Lt. Jacon Cordero.

The list of godparents also include Michelle Marie San Pedro, Roger Aguirre, Lennie Galaraga, Glory Joy Pascua, Elizabeth de la Cruz, Wilsie Teburania, Gerome Uy.

Nakakatawa because we thought the binyag was at 10 a.m. About 8 a.m. of Dec. 25, I got a call from one fo the detained officers saying that the priest was already in the Custodial Center and the mass was about to start.

Ang sarap pa matulog. We were at Erap’s camp. The hotel accommodation was good. The air was fresh and clean. All that you hear was the chirping of the birds.

It was 10 a.m. when we finally got to the Custodial Center (Camp Capinpin is just across Erap camp). Tapos na ang binyag. Other wives stood as our proxy during the christening ceremony.

Baby Clarisse must have enjoyed the ceremony and party, all along she was looking and looking around and not crying at all.

Excuse me, I’m just curious…how could the couple have a four month old baby when the father has been detained for years?

BE: ang pagintindi ko married detainees families have conjugal visitation benefits…..I understand wives are given the privilege to stay at the detention camp for a longer visit than just a day…
