Gloria Arroyo clutching at straws

This story shows how desperate Gloria Arroyo and her drumbeaters are.

On Jan. 2, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza issued this statement:

“It’s encouraging to note that we have been cited in Bloomberg today, as one of the resilient economies in Asia, along with China. Amidst global financial downturn, we continue to post strong currency and fiscal position. Undeniably, this is the result of the economic reforms instituted by the President early on.

While difficult days are expected ahead, we are in a better position to weather them as long as we keep the course and resist the temptation of divisive politics.

The Philippines and China were being cited as the two Asian economies that fared the best in 2008 and that will do well in 2009.

The following story by TJ Burgonio and Maxim Lucas is in the Inquirer today:

Malacañang boys cheered too soon

Malacañang officials were cheering a Bloomberg report Saturday that supposedly cited the Philippines and China as the most resilient in Asia in 2008 and which “would do well in 2009.”

“It’s encouraging to note that we have been cited in Bloomberg today as one of the two resilient economies in Asia, along with China. Amidst global financial downturn, we continue to post a strong currency and fiscal position,” Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said Saturday in a statement.

But a check with Bloomberg News yesterday yielded no such story on the Philippines—in any news or feature item—as a “resilient” economy along with China.

In fact, almost all references to the country over the past two days over Bloomberg were made in a negative light, especially concerning the Philippines’ weakening fiscal position.

Report not found

One such story quoted DBS Group fixed-income strategist Jens Lauschke, saying that the rallies in the bonds of Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines have “essentially run their course.”

Asked specifically about the Philippines, he said: “The fiscal backdrop is bond-unfriendly.”

Another Bloomberg story quoted Royal Bank of Scotland interest-rate strategist Chia Woon Khien saying that he saw “risk in India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.”

“These are the four main countries we are looking out for,” he said.

A third story made only passing reference to the country, quoting Rachana Mehta of Singapore-based KE Capital saying at the very last paragraph that she favored bonds in India, South Korea and the Philippines.

Reached via telephone, Bloomberg’s Manila bureau chief Francisco Alcuaz Jr. declined to comment on the Palace statement and the text message that was circulated ahead of it. He asked the Inquirer, instead, to check with the official making the statement where he got the story from.

When contacted for verification, Secretary Dureza said his information about the Bloomberg report came from former Secretary Mike Defensor, who reportedly watched Bloomberg news on TV in Hong Kong on Dec. 30, 2008.

Dureza said he had instructed his staff to verify the report. As of last night, the report could not be verified.

  1. Remember last October Gloria Arroyo was also disowned by World Bank after she announced that it was setting up a $10 billion fund for Asean to weather the financial crisis that hit the U.S (medyo malayo, di ba?)?

Click here for that story: http://www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=2806

Here goes Malacañang again with their illusions of economic success.

Bwahahaha!!! Buking na buking! Kinuryente ni Little Like si eager-beaver na gagong Dureza. O sadyang pareho silang nasa hallucination mode. Belat!!!!

Talking of wishes kanina sa corner ng 42nd St. and Madison Ave. in Manhattan..we waited for more than an hour as the Palestinians marched to the UN…ang dami dami nila..how I wished it were the Pilipino rally against Gloria marching to UN..nananginip din ako of a Filpino rally at the UN..

  5. That’s right! I was going to make some write-up as well, I did searched for keywords on Bloomberg, Wall Street, CNN Money and MSNBC, leche! Everything were all about the peso going down! What were they thinking?! Madame Auring is going to do some magical twits by calling Garci and everything will be ah… ok?! Leche!!!

China’s economy depends largely on exports of consumers’ commodities to the developed economies, don’t need Bloomberg or anyone to see it is also hurting as the consuming countries in recessions. While the Philippines depends largely on exports of finished electronics products and on OFWs remittances and that too is yet to see the results of the host countries on OFWs employment and the results are now starting with the lay-offs and reduce hiring from traditional overseas jobs.

And instead of doing long ago some programs in preparation for these eventualities, the administration was just sitting on their supposed perceived “booming” economy, and not a single program to cushion the possibilities, like provision for laid off workers (unemployment benefits)upgrading of skills training or creations local jobs to absorb the overseas workers who could no longer find employment abroad. Just watch for some positive news reports and beat the Drums..Dureza et al can not be beat in this regards.

I first posted the above topic in another thread of this blog.
Yes, since this evil government seldom if never gets positive comment internationally, they think they could fool us by announcing lies.

Other countries express their grievances against their government by massive protests just like the current Palestinians. That’s what’s lacking to Filipinos abroad. With the exception of a few groups, sometimes I’m beginning to think they don’t care about their native land anymore.

    nakupo!

the power-grabber macapagal-arroyo (PGMA) and her ever loyal dog, the mimiyak made another blunder in spreading their hallucinated “positive reaction” from an international paper thinking ordinary filipinos would “bite” again these lies.

  13. Gloria Arroyo as First Lady in 2010?
Gloria and Mike Arroyo should consider the Argentine political model…a husband and wife team alternating in power.Mike Arroyo should run for President in 2010!

This is a good solution to the current political crisis:

    1) The Mike Arroyo candidacy will be, in effect, a referendum of the Gloria Arroyo presidency.

    2) It will allow the administration parties, Lakas and Kampi,to have a a common candidate.

3)It will allow the Arroyos to have a another shot for the the top post WITHOUT resorting to a potentially disastrous CON ASS move in 2009.

4)Most importantly,we will have another seasoned and world-renowned Filipino First Lady if Mike Arroyo becomes the president in 2010.

  14. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

With the disclaimer issued by the World Bank and again this Malacanang ‘claimed’ good news Bloomberg report which turned out to be concocted only by those two Gloria morons, the bitch should have already fired her amuyongs and blew her brains out with a pistol. Pero talagang makapal pa sa titanium ang mga pagmumukha while taking advantage of the ‘kindness’, gullibility, stupidity and poverty of the kapinuyan and the political opposition’s disunity.

I doubt it if Dureza did not inform Gloria first of the fake Bloomberg report. May basbas yan ng impakta same as that of the WB’s.

This shows that the kapinuyan will be subjected to more lying and hallucinations by Gloria in 2009 and beyond, and yet they rather wait for 2010 as promised by the she-devil.

  17. MrG MrG

The hallucination and aberrant behavior displayed by a lot of high government officials should attract the attention of the PDEA agents. These days, first thing to suspect when people behave abnormally is to verify for drug abuse. There could be a bigger and larger haul if they tried to bring their sniffer dogs to Malacanang during Cabinet meetings.

  18. Is anyone from Malacañang defending the story? Anything that is shown on Bloomberg is picked-up by many of their stockbroker-friends in Ayala and Ortigas and anyone can easily confirm or debunk that claim. Brokerages have staff dedicated to monitoring all related press, especially Hong Kong-based Bloomberg, Edgar Online, Barron’s, Yahoo Finance, Wall Street Journal, London’s Financial Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, and major news orgs like MSNBC, Fox, Reuters , AP, AFP, NHK etc.

FYI, some of these media companies even outsource their layout to BPO companies in Manila that we get advance info/copies of the major news yet to be released from their sources.

Financial Times for example, gets its layout done in Manila that by the time it is printed in London, the news have already broken in Makati, specifically in the lobby of Shangri-La where some of my friends buy their copies for about P200 ea.

  19. I also doubt that we can even beat the economy of Korea as far as resiliency is concerned. Sure, they are hurting in terms of electronics export, where their LCDs and memory chips have captured the biggest slice of the global pie, but they also have a very competitive automotive export industry. Americans and Europeans who can still afford to buy cars these days are going Japanese or Korean brands. The Philippines doesn’t even have a modest export industry, aside from electronics, to speak of. The remaining big guns, Texas Instruments and Intel, are laying off workers by the hundreds.

I was not shocked but so upset reading Ducky Paredes’ recent column at Malaya.

Everyone was unanimous in saying and believing that the Dela Paz family members were the victims. And now here comes his recent column defending the goons from Lanao del Sur. Is he going out of his mind?

We know that he himself is a golfer and frequents golf courses. We also know that among his golf mates are Mike Pidal Arroyo and the powerful Malacanang officials who might include the Pangandamans. We don’t question why as a humble journalist, he could afford to play such an expensive sport.
But, we question his motive in defending the Pangandamans.

Common sense tells us that a right thinking father would not risk the safety of his minor son and daughter in provoking a fight; much more attack much bigger men with armed bodyguards. Sorry, we don’t his your story. He must be losing some bets lately playing golf.

  21. bitchevil bitchevil

Correction: Sorry, we don’t buy his story.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Ellen for criticizing her colleague at Malaya paper. I presume they know one another. But this Ducky Paredes…what’s he up to?

No yahoo news about Dureza’s claim up to this time. Ang bagal ng yahoo, hehe, unlike Gloria’s spaced out amuyongs.

  23. eddfajardo eddfajardo

Desperate for whatever sort of positive news about the GMA government, Press Secretary Dureza is acting a Joseph Goebbel-like propaganda aimed at fooling the already educated Filipino nation. What a crap this government is doing to its constituents! I now realize why Gloria needs to perpetuate in power beyond 2010 otherwise the sight of the Ceusescus or Mussolinis being hang in public will be a repeat of history for the Filipinos.

  24. chi chi

Gloria and her drugged amuyongs are so desperate to make an international news. Who knows, baka congratulate sya ni Barack…just hoping for a slice of heaven.

If there’s one policy we should admire Bush for, it’s that one although lip-service lang. Maganda sana kung maico-commit ng Fil-Ams si Barack to get tougher on kleptos and dictators.

  26. chi chi

Tongue, hubby and his students wrote Barack last November about his (would-be) policies on dictators and kleptos as part of their Global Studies course. Wala pang sagot e, baka when he is already a full-fledged president (jan 20). Tingnan natin kung sasagot pa.

Yuko, what about your circle? I know that you wrote Barack in the past. Dapat maisahan naman natin si Dorobo.

  27. bitchevil bitchevil

Barack may be still in the barracks so he has no response yet.
The Arabs are also urging him to make a statement on Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Obama won’t comment even if he wants to respecting the one president policy. When he’s sworn in, we shall hear more from him.

    Nice proposal MrG,

What’s abnormal in this news? Nakakasuka.

“I was not shocked but so upset reading Ducky Paredes’ recent column at Malaya” – be

Who’s still reading his columns anyway?

No one should trust no more these Paredeses.

Jim Paredes of the famous Apo Hiking Society was among the evil groups that ousted Marcos. By the way, they’re all Ateneans. The DOJ is also controlled by Ateneo Mafia.

  34. With international media picking up the story narrated by Bambee, magbilang na ng araw si Gloria Mandarambong. I bet you, the idiot will be busy collecting tongs, etc. to pay the media people she has paid big money from the coffers to whitewash her bad image.

Tuloy ang batikos. Huwag nang magpaligoy-ligoy pa! Sipain na, this year na!

  35. As for the Philippines faring economically well, neknek ni Gloria! Tarantado ba siya. Kahit nga China, pabagsak na according to major media’s reports. Ulol!

Good business para sa akin as a matter of fact. Malaki ang kita ko sa pulis, korte at bar association interpreting for them Filipinos willing to commit crime to survive.

  36. I should add that over here in Japan, Filipino women would even try to have themselves impregnated by Japanese nationals to be able to get the coveted permit to stay permanently in Japan especially when the reluctant father recognizes the child as his. Ganoon ka-desperate sa totoo lang. Kaya ano iyong mga kabulastugang ipinagyayabang noong dugong aso from Pampanga?

    Nakakasuka!

The world blames both Israel and the Hamas militants…depending on which side the country is. The US is of course for Israel while the Arab nations side with the Hamas. Dick Cheney just said Israel attacked Gaza on the ground without America’s consent. This is hard to believe. Israel never moves without America’s knowledge.

Bloomberg Report – by Sec. Jesus Dureza, another ridiculous news from the press secretary.

Gloria and Jesus have been creating scripted deceptions for their evil intentions. Just recently, Jesus was critisized for asking god GMA’s office extension beyond 2010. And now, Jesus is trying to fool us with his false Bloomberg report. Based on the two Hongkong news below, it looks like it was GMA who fed the information to Jesus, and Jesus, who was always an eager beaver as always, publicly announced the conntry’s resiliency to resist crisis.

The Philippines is weathering the global financial crisis better than many economies, but the government is monitoring the effect of inflation and falling growth on the country’s poor to see what further poverty-alleviation measures might be needed, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the president, said. In an interview with the Financial Times, the head of the world’s 12th most populous nation argued that revenue-raising reforms earlier in her administration, specifically increasing value added tax, had stood the country in good stead. “We’ve managed our economy well to the point where we are resilient to this crisis,” she said, saying the Philippines had grown 4.6 percent so far this year and was expected to grow at 3.7-4.7 percent in 2009.
Economists agreed that the Philippines was bearing up relatively well to global financial turmoil but did not necessarily credit the government. “The Philippine economic ship is safe from the storm because it never left the port in the first place,” said Felipe Medalla, an economics professor at the University of the Philippines and a former government planning chief. The Philippines, said Medalla, was not a big exporter, shielding its economy from the sharp downturn in external demand.

While it is World Bank that specifically mentioned the word “resilient” when it described the Philippine economy in its report, the accompanying figures do not support Dureza’s spin of China and RP’s GDP faring better than their East Asian neighbors in 2009. It is China’s (2008=9.4%;2009=7.5%) and Vietnam’s (2008=6.5%;2009=6.5%) figures that are showing resiliency. WB’s Eric LeBorgne’s estimates for the Philippines: 2008=4.0%, 2009=3.0%
