Not signing on for Puno-for-president

I’m wary about calls for Chief Justice Reynato Puno to run for president in 2010.

I share the suspicion of Sen. Kiko Pangilinan that “the Arroyo government is quietly encouraging the moves to draft Puno” for president.

Sen. Ping Lacson has endorsed Puno for president saying that he is willing to subordinate his own presidential ambitions to the chief justice. Nilo Tayag, student- activist-turned- religious- preacher has launched a Puno-for-president movement.

I’m heartened by Puno’s lack of interest insisting that the judiciary should not be involved in politics.Given the kind of political and electoral system that we have, Puno couldn’t win in a national, much more a presidential election.

Pangilinan worries that if Tayag succeeds in turning around the far fetched possibility for Puno to join the 2010 residential race, Arroyo gets to appoint a new chief justice should Puno step down to become a candidate. “If his victory isn’t assured then we lose an independent CJ and then open up opportunity for the Arroyo government to appoint a subservient CJ.”

Calls for Puno to run for president increased following his speech at the Anvil Club, an organization of young Filipino-Chinese entrepreneurs and professionals committed to promote entrepreneurial courage, professional excellence, Confucian values and civic consciousness. It’s understandable because even if he didn’t mention Gloria Arroyo in that speech, which he liberally quoted from Chinese thinker and philosopher Confucius,it clearly took a jab at her much-vaunted economic accomplishments.

Take the part when he quoted Confucian teachings on good governance:

“When asked about good government, Confucius replied that its requisites are: it must be able to provide: (1) sufficiency of food, (2) sufficiency of military equipment, and (3) it must have the confidence of the people.

“He was then asked: ‘If it cannot be helped, and one of these must be dispensed with, which of the three should be foregone first?’

‘The military equipment,’ said Confucius.

“The next question was more difficult: ‘If it cannot be helped, and one of the remaining two must be dispensed with, which of them should be foregone?’

“After serious thought, Confucius answered: ‘Part with the food. From of old, death has been the lot of men; but if the people have no faith in their rulers, there is no standing for the state.’

“The wisdom of Confucius’ answers speak for themselves. More than economic prosperity, more than military might, government needs the trust of the people in order to govern effectively.”

What does that make of Arroyo’s claim of economic progress when she is the most distrusted president in Philippine history?

Puno is not presidential candidate material in the sense that he does not have the resources and the organization to wage a national campaign. But he would make a good president. He can lead the nation to rediscover its moral moorings trampled upon by Arroyo’s administration.

But first, the Filipino people should muster the courage to oust Gloria Arroyo.

Between now and the 2010 election, expect Malacanang to apply more tricks to confuse the opposition and the people. Lies, deceit, sabotage…

I don’t think the endorsement of SC Chief Puno is the work of Malacanang. The groups that are pushing Puno to run could have good intention. The question is, would Puno run or not…the answer is a big NO. Puno is not a politician and never will. Puno knows how dirty politics is. Once he becomes the President, he has to please many people. Puno knows he would be eaten and swallowed by the system. Why risk his good name now that he’s about to retire?

What’s disappointing is the desire of religious leaders to run for public office as high as the President of the Republic. Mike Velarde, Eddie Villanueva, Panlilio…good thing Manalo does not. A religious leader cannot be impartial in his acts and decisions. His religious beliefs and conviction would affect his day to day decision. He cannot ignore the interest of his church and flock. Their motive shall also be suspect. For instance, Mike Velarde for one has huge personal and private business interests to protect.

  2. I take my hats off to CJ Puno for refusing to be dragged into this dirty race for the presidency, because he knows he can serve his country better as a judge. Why Solomon of old was a better person in fact when he acted as a judge especially with serving God first and foremost in his mind! Remember what happened to him after he became king, rather when he acted no longer as a judge but a king?

CJ Puno may take warning from that story as a matter of fact.

As for Nilo Tayag, I can’t trust him. Balimbing din ang taong iyan. Hindi ba kening burimo din iyan? Beware of the Ides of March, sabi nga!

Yes, the Tayags are Kapampangan. I don’t know about the Punos. Are they from Ilocos?

Desperate move of desperate people. If the trick did not do, wait for the ultimate, maybe martial law. It is now do or die for her/them.

  7. Confucious also said:

In a country well governed poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed wealth is something to be ashamed of.

    And Aristotle predicted:

Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.

  9. Press Statement of Sen. Kiko Pangilinan:

“We admire Chief Justice Puno’s resolve to lead the moral forces, as this country needs a leader who can be a model of integrity for our countrymen. But we believe that he will do this most effectively by upholding the independence and the integrity of the Supreme Court.

“It is imperative now, more than ever, for the Supreme Court to be the vanguard of the Constitution and our democratic institutions.

“The current administration has gone out of its way to undermine the independence of the judiciary, and it’s important that the people have an institution to run to when the executive and legislative branches are constantly violating the rule of law.”

“The judiciary is the last bastion of our democracy. We need to keep it independent and ethical.”

“The best way for us to ensure the integrity and the independence of our institutions is for the right people to be placed in the right positions, and for them to do their jobs well and do what’s right, in the midst of politicking from all sides.”

And Gluerilla said: Poverty is no disgrace – it’s just an inconvenient.

So a Muslim cannot be a Philippines President??

JFK said this after becoming the first Catholic President of the US: I am a President who happened to be a Catholic.

Go Puno Go!! Please throw in your name in the hat, little money doesn’t lessen your chances of becoming the savior of this downtrodden part of the world.

  11. MPRivera MPRivera

Hopefully, Puno will not allow himself to fall into the trap of this attempt to corrupt him.

    Kawawang Pilipinas talaga!

They funny thing about this is that Bro. Eddie Villanueva is inviting Puno to be his running mate as Vice President.
