Col. Ariel Querubin, detained on charges of mutiny for allegedly planning to withdraw support from Gloria Arroyo in February 2006, revealed his plan to run for the Senate in 2010 in a letter first published in this space last Saturday.
Malacañang made a mocking reaction.Deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez said, Everybody is free to dream.”
He added, “Hindi ko kilala si Colonel Querubin, ang pagkatao niya, ang pag-defy niya sa chain of command, nakikita ko, to me that does not show any good [I don’t know Colonel Querubin personally but his defying the chain of command, the way I see it, does not show any good].” .
He also said Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez would be the one to comment on the legality of Querubin’s candidacy.
GMANews-TV, meanwhile said AFP Spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr. said, “We are in a democratic country and we believe that anyone has the right to run as long as they are qualified,” he said.
Apparently unaware that once a government employee files his certificate of candidacy, he is considered resigned, Brawner said Querubin “should first leave the service if he indeed wants to pursue his political ambition.”
Brawner stressed that while Querubin and Brig. Gen Danilo Lim, who is rumored to also be planning to run for the Senate in 2010, are free to run, he is not sure whether the two would be allowed to go out of detention to campaign. “They will still have to face the charges that are brought upon them.”
Brawner also said that the AFP is not bothered by the number of rebel soldier seeking government office.
Jose Martin A. Loon,Querubin’s stepson who is serving as his spokesman issued the following statement:
We agree with Mr Golez, everyone is free to dream. Dream of a prosperous and vibrant Republic of the Philippines, dream of a country without corrupt leaders, and dream of a country with clean and honest elections unlike those that happened in 2004. Col Querubin is free to dream of accountability from officials who engage in corrupt practices & leaders who plunder this country. He is free to dream of a country that sends people like Garci and Pidal to jail, and a country that protects Jun Lozada and those who seek the truth. He is free to dream of a country that will stand up for justice and freedom, that will work for the welfare of the people and not beat them up when they rally in the streets. He is free to dream of a government that will care about its people, give the farmers the Fertilizer Funds they deserve, give the soldiers and teachers adequate combat pay.
Malacanang is right, Colonel Querubin is free to dream . And dream he shall do until all these dreams become a reality.
Colonel Querubin was engaged in clean, competent and decent military service for 30 years of his life. He has not engaged in any form of corruption, or graft, or election cheating activities. He is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy, Asia’s Premier Military Institution and has a Master’s Degree from the University of Canberra, Australia, and several military schoolings here and abroad. He is one of the most bemedalled officer in the history of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, with 1 Distinguished Conduct Star, 2 Distinguished Service Stars and 8 Gold Cross medals, not to mention the Medal for Valor as awarded by President Arroyo herself, among many others.

Did the colonel break the chain of command? Where is the chain of command from the marine commandant, the navy commander, then to the chief of staff, then to the commander in chief? Who is supposed to be the commander in chief: GMA, who was reported to have used the AFP to tamper with the 2004 election results; GMA, who suppressed evidences to be presented to prove legally the report that the AFP was used to tamper with the 2004 election results by GMA? This suppression of evidences has validated the report just mentioned that it is indeed true. Then the status of the one A. Golez implied to be the commander in chief is illegitimate by the guilt of tampering with the election results. Who then is supposed to be the top of the chain of command?
I actually feel embarrassed to be entering into arguments with the legitimacy issue when just by common sense, just by basic ethical values, or simple logic, we can see who is the innocent and who is the guilty!

By giving away our Sabah, our territory to the Malaysians, by giving our Kalayaan Islands to the possession of the Chinese, by letting our vast forests in Aurora be denuded by a Chinese, by letting our compatriots in Pampanga doing retail business be displaced by SM owned by a Chinese, by letting the Chinese of the ZTE handle our government internet facilities and have access to our information, GMA is already guilty of treason. By letting the Americans Forces have access to our terrains in our country which are our tactical assets, by letting the Americans establish a military camp inside our military camp in Zamboanga, and by letting an American convicted of having raped our Filipina, escape, GMA is already guilty of treason! Should not anyone guilty of treason be arrested?
Who then has the guilt? Who then should be arrested? Who then has the duty to execute the arrest?

For your information Inigo, Col Gojo and his wife were Ariel’s second parents. When his doctor wife died and left him with a 1 yr and 7 month old son and a very sickly 7 month old daughter, the Gojo’s were there for him all the way. Sila ang nagalaga ng mga anak niya na parang tunay nilang mga apo. Kung ano man ang pwesto ngayon ni Col Gojo kay Ebdame, for sure negatibo ang dating kay Col Querubin. Hindi mo pwedeng sirain ang pagkakaibingan ng dalawang taong may pinagsamahan. It does not mean that the Col approves of any wrong doing of Ebdame. That is between Col Gojo and Ebdame.

Inigo, for your info, Captain pa lang si Col noong namatay yung asawa niya. At the wake, lahat na ng malalaking tao eh dumalo. I saw almost all the richest people of the land and Inigo(yung tunay na Inigo) was already one of them, the highest positioned politicians (almost all the senators and representatives then) and even governors. They came to the wake to grieve with the Col. Ganyan si Col. But he never used this influence to spring him out of his detention. No less than the President Ramos at that time had a personal letter written to the then Captain condoling him on the death of his wife.
Kung meron mang special treatment sa kanya at kailangang magpunta siya sa exercise room ng hospital, it is part of his health management dahil may hypertension na siya at clogged arteries. Thanks to the smokers around him at the detention. The second hand smoke must have caused this condition. Mabuti na lang din at hiniwalay na yung kwarto niya sa mga kwarto ng mga “chain smokers”. Nagiingat din ang AFP at kung hindi nila aalagaan si Col, lagot sila sa International Human Rights. He has to live in a habitable condition. Hindi pa naman siya convicted, di ba?
Luga, both the Col and Gen Lim are professional soldiers. Parehong hindi corrupt. Both of them are on the same page in curtailing the corrption that is killing our country. In that sense, they respect one another.
Luga, Gen Miranda deserves his retirement money. He worked hard for that! Besides, bakit naman hindi eh he is not proven guilty pa naman. Kung may conviction na yung kangaroo court ni asspweron, which I doubt will convict them kasi marami na ring napalitan sa panel, then and only then will all his benefits end.

I’m glad, they acknowledge that Philippines is a Democratic country.I’m having a problem about the case that they mentioned against Col. Querubin, since they can’t find any loopholes how they are going to charge the incarcerated officials. Will you call it democracy if someone in the Arm Forces try to do the right thing? Any aspiring candidate to serve the country has the freedom to do so, as long as they are chosen by the voters. I’m sure that Col. Querubin will do a good job, a real patriot, who love the country , love the freedom and equality of every citizens. I’m looking forward for him to be elected, at least there’ll be someone who could fight for the needy, helpless who doesn;t have a voice. It’s time that the voters should take control of who they are “hiring to represents them. It’s to unite against the “filthy corrupt” elected officials! Wake up!!!

I don’t know Querubin personally but have followed his exploits from the time Gloria declared her stupid State of Emergency. I have also asked people in the military I know about him. Most of them think highly of the man. Have a lot about him and thanks to reports by Ellen, have gotten to know Querubin.

There is no question at all, no question whatsoever that Colonel Querubin has the right moral values well entrenched.

My friends, Bembol Roco and Roy Alvarez, told me they visited Col Querubin in ISAFP. They are his friends since the 1980’s.
Bembol told me that Inigo Zobel is the Godfather of Col Querubin’s 15 year old daughter.
Anybody can visit the Col. Alangan namang paalisin niya ang mga bumibisita. Kabastusan yun, di ba? Maraming mga kaibigang dati si Col na nasa EK ngayon. But still, these are his very good friends from loooong time ago. It does not mean that when they visit him, he is in cahoots with them!

Those that felt used in the February 2006, may not be true patriots after all, and even if injustice was done to them, patriotism is a different standard altogether. The relief of Gen. Miranda was a disrespect of the institution. That stand-off was about dissent to the mockery of honor, integrity and loyalty. Didn’t every Marine think so? Then unmask those who felt used in 2006, they are not true patriots after all.

I saw a video of Col. Querubin and his kids over GMA7 taken at dawn today in Camp Aguinaldo, I suppose…the news said he was granted a leave from detention today to register in La Union. The Medal of Valor, one of only two living recipients in the Philippine Marines, looked good being out and free (even only for a day). His boys are adorable.

Your questions seem to indicate that you are not entirely ignorant of what’s going on in the military stockade which leads me to believe that you personally know the officers who are incarcerated.
My susggestion is why don’t you ask Col Querubin these questions yourself, either directly or in person or by writing to him, and be done with it.
Either you have the moral and physical courage to squarely face the man you accuse implicitly of corruption but don’t just go on a demolition job on Querubin just because someone whispered unflattering things to him in your ear.

Then going by your insinuation, can that Army captain who enjoyed the same favor be also GMA’s hero? Oh then let us also conclude that Gen.Lim is also a favored detainee for being allowed to attend his daughter’s debut. Recently, another Tanay detainee was at her mother’s bedside when the latter underwent surgery. Another detained Ranger just got back from looking after a wife who had a miscarraige. Should I go on and on?
To make Gen. Miranda’s situation a case in point to judge others is totally unfair. Didnt Yano tell Gen. Miranda during his visit at ISAFP shortly after new year that all the detainees need to do is just file the request and they will act accordingly? Indeed, you are just an onlooker with baseless and malicious innuendos, that we shouldnt take seriously.

Another Marine detainee in Tanay also got a new car, after his car was totally wrecked in an accident. Two ISAFP detainees also just got Delicas in addition to their vehicles. And Gen. Lim, after selling his lot was able to buy a house and lot because his wife and daughter were evicted from their quarters at Fort Bonifacio for being “security risks” – so what are you saying again? “Ok pala maging detainee.. maraming graciang natatanggap.”

Onlooker, I am Ariel’s sister in the US and one of the main financial supporters of Ariel.If Ellen would allow me, I would like to send her a copy of my remittance for the downpayment of their new car. Maybe his wife can scan a copy of the AFPSLAI loan contract for the balance of their loan, an interst of 14% payable in 5 yrs. I will also send copies of my monthly remittances to them since they got back from Australia. I just want my brother and his family to have a decent life. You will see that I am sending them more than his average salary a month. I am also the one giving them the one time fee for the ebrollment of their kids. I will make all the copies of my remittances available to be posted outside of his detention cell for everybody to see. And, the electronic toys of the kids, the nintendo wii, and other nintendo toys, I gave those as gifts to his kids for good behaviour and good grades. I can furnish the receipts of those available for everyone to see.
I am partly to be blamed for this “support” thing. When I visited Tanay the first time, I saw the living conditions of the detained. I cried! It was filthy, hot and the kids were suffering. I just had to do something. I told my brother to share whatever he gets from me, my other brother who also lives here in the US (for over 40 yrs now)and other relatives. Our cousins all over the world, some from Europe, the US and even well positioned nephews in big companies in the middle east donated the airconditioners in Tanay. Since Ariel was detained in Tanay, some of our relatives pass the hat at parties. In lieu of gifts at birthdays, we give cash gifts and all these are given to Ariel with specific instructions to help the other deatainees as much as he can. This is why he has the money to help the other detainees’ children when needed. He is happy doing that and we are MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP HIM! I will make all these remittance receipts available for everyone to see at the detention center. For us who help him, this is our only way to show support for the detained WHO GENUINELY subjected themselves to the incarceration without blame. We specifically told Ariel to help just the deserving ones. Since it is our efforts to have raised these funds, we have the final say where it should be spent.
We are a big family. If we get together in the US alone, we can easily number over 600 in one function. This is just in the US. In the Philippines, our relatives are from Batanes to Sulu. We all try to help Ariel and company as much as we can. This is the LEAST we can do to help our MOTHER country that is now riddled with corruption and poverty. So, now you know where Ariel and Pong get their money from.
I am also aware that one time there was an issue when Pong went to some politicians to solicit money for the hospitalization of the late Marlyn (one of the wives of the incarcerated who died from leukemia). Pong’s act was admirable but it was made a BIG issue by those who themselves did not even help!
Now, Pong does not even want to accept any donation for anyone of the datained anymore. Pong and Ariel are suspected to be keeping the money for themselves. This is probably where this “plunder” word originated from one of the bloggers here.

My advice if and when you send copies of receipts of remitances and other purchases you made for your brother, his family and the other detained officers, to make sure that you do not show your credit card numbers or bank account numbers (if you used them to pay for your purchases or for remittances) as evil people who are jealous of your brother might do something illegal with those numbers.

Pong’s (Ariel’s wife)family helps them too as much as our family does. They number as much as we do and they are all over the world too.
Ariel and Pong have very low key good friends who are at their side through and through. These are their sources of strength.These friends do not need acknowlegement. But they are always willing to extend their hands when needed without fear and expectations.
In Ariel’s SAL(Statment of Assets), he reflects my yearly assistance and he calls it “US Aid”. He is an FBI (Full Blooded Ilocano) and is vey frugal-all deposits and no withdrawals. They live within their monthly income of 52,000 plus my monthly assistance and occasionally my brother’s and other relatives’ assistance. As a medal of valor awardee, he gets an additional monthly compensation of 20,000 plus the free education of his kids in any chosen school and in all levels. The kid can stay in school up to their doctorate degrees and still paid for. I only give them the one time fee yearly which is between $400 to $800 per child. This is why the kids are in Ateneo and Miriam.
Pong is an incredible shopper! She has a tight monthly budget and she knows where to buy the best and cheapest items. She does not normally shop for herself. When I go home on holidays, I shop clothes for everyone including Pong. I find great buys for clothing in the Philippines. I want our country to have the revenues on my purchases too.
The kids bring their own packed lunch (sandwich and water, no soda) and they are not given any money at all. Jollibee and sushi are their treats for good grades. The kids eat malunggay, mongo with ampalaya and galunggong.
My nieces and I regularly send them balikbayan boxes with clothes, shoes, bags, food stuff, vitamins for a whole year and sundries.
Other people would wonder how Ariel and Pong can afford to live decently. NOW THEY KNOW!

Whew! I had to look for all the receipts of my remittances to my brother. I finally found the receipts! I just sent all the copies to Pong. And Anna, I followed your advice, I removed all the important numbers. For the months that I usually go home, and it has been yearly for the past 10 years and twice a year in 2006,2007 and 2008, I just personally handed their “US Aid”. By the way, the remittance for the downpayment for the new Innova car was also sent to Pong.
Now all those who want to se where the money of Ariel and Pong came from, go and look at the copies in Ariel’s detention cell.
I do believed on Col. Querubin’s honest intention to serve our country! Aside from campaigning for him, am also prepared to help in every way I can. When the right time comes, I will be there, Colonel!

I don’t understand why the jealousy. Someone or some people (perhaps in the military itself) are so jealous of your brother that they would twist and turn the truth.
Col Querubin must prepare for the onslaught of demolition workers from all sides. They are running scared and will run scared. Gloria and Esperon will move heaven and earth to destroy him.
But I have no fear, your brother is a good man — he will beat them all.
I hope that the voters can not easily be bought now Anna. No matter how GMA and Esperon destroy Ariel, as always, he can weather the storms. His incarceartion has made him more determined than ever to serve his country.
When he came to the US in the early 1990s, we were encouraging him to just reside in the US but he said his country, the Philippines needs him more! So all we can do is just to understand where he is coming from and support him as much as we can.

Unfortunately, voters can and will still be bought but it is my deep conviction that the courage and the heroic deeds of your brothers are great assets and voters will see that.
It is perhaps a saving grace in this corruption-filled country that is ours that voters love heroes (that’s probably why they like make-believe hero movie stars and elect them to public office, unfit as most of them are for the tasks that await them) and if I may say, absurd as it may sound, your brother will be elected in great part because of that hero-star quality which, fortunately, is not make believe.
It’s been proven before, my conviction is that it will be proven again.
The thing that we should all worry about is not the vote buying but the stealing and the cheating.
There’s little doubt in my mind that there will be thieves come election time and they will steal the votes that are meant for your brother. I’m sure he knows about this. It is imperative that those who are loyal to him in the military (and in the civilian world) keep their eyes open. He must, even if he might not like the idea, ask those colleagues — from all major services, i.e., PAF, PN, PA — of his who are loyal to his cause and by extension to everything he stands for, to guard the ballot boxes.
We must pray for his success.
Thanks Anna. If it is God’s will, it will be done. Ariel, luckily, is surrounded by genuine supporters who are not waiting to be compensated on their efforts to help him win. We need more! It is a very steep hill to climb to make him win. More so because he is incarcerated.
You are right, the “hero” image will probably appeal to the voters. His incarceration may or may not work for him. It was proven that it worked with Trillianes but now the administration will be very watchful and will do everything to stop him from winning.
It is the evil versus good. I hope the latter wins…
