Finally, Maj. General Juancho Sabban has been named commandant of the Philippine Marines.
A long delayed appointment.
We can imagine that Malacañang weighed the pros and cons of approving the recommendation of the Board of Generals of Sabban against the demoralization that it would cause among the Marines if Gloria Arroyo had given in to the lobbying of her favored Marine, Maj. Gen. Jonathan Martir, whose second star remains unconfirmed by the Commission on Appointments.
Martir has a pending case of AWOL (absence without leave for more than a year) which is the basis of the malversation of funds charge before the Ombudsman.
Although PMA Class ’78 has adopted Gloria Arroyo and a number of them are now in strategic positions, Sabban is more associated with officials who are now in detention and charged with mutiny in connection with the alleged plan to withdraw support from Arroyo in February 2006.
Sabban participated in the 1989 coup, the bloodiest military rebellion against President Aquino. He escaped from detention and resumed his career when the Ramos government granted amnesty to all military rebels.
(AFP Spokesman Romeo Brawner said, “There might have been instances in his career where he went against the rules and regulations…but everybody is given the chance to prove himself.”)
It’s probably this aspect of his military record that made Arroyo delay his appointment as Marines chief despite the fact that he was the most senior in rank for that position next to Lt. Gen. Ben Dolorfino, who replaced the retiring Lt. Gen Nelson Allaga as commander of the Western Mindanao command.
The 8,000-strong Marines has a history of militancy and Malacañang initially had wanted them under Martir, whose dogged loyalty to Arroyo was shown in the November 2007 Manila Peninsula incident when he stomped on the rebel Magdalo officers who were down on the floor handcuffed.
In the 1987 and 1989 coups, Martir has submitted affidavits against the alleged “coup plotters” especially Col. Ariel Querubin. He also stood as a prosecution witness in the ongoing trail against officers implicated in the 2006 non-event.
Martir losing out to Sabban simply proves that servility can only get one so far. It does not guarantee the highest prize.
But the other Manila Pen bully who will be rewarded the highest position is Deputy Director Geary Barias of the Philippine National Police.
It has been talked about that PNP Chief Jesus Verzosa, who will be retiring in December 2010, will be prematurely retired in October this year to give way to another Class ’78 member, Deputy Director Roberto “Boysie” Rosales.
But the latest info we got was that Verzosa, who is identified with Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, will be going out next month in favor of Barias, whose patrons are the all powerful Arroyo brothers, Mike and Iggy.
Salamat naman! MajorGen Sabban deserves the promotion with or without the fake boobsie Gloria naming him to the position.
The unana is weighing the pros and cons of appointing to higher posts her ‘own’ AFP officials disliked by the people. Kaya medyo hindi rin ako lubos na naniniwala na the bitch can declare martial rule pronto because she knows the militar is divided unlike in Marcos time. But I don’t discount the possibility of it because of her greed for power.

Ellen, Sabban’s promotion is a welcomed move. He was a junior officer in 2004 when the boobuwit used the AFP including the marines to rig the elections. Hindi papayag si Sabban na mandaya ulit si boobuwit para sa kanyang mga alipores. If at all, Sabban will at least make sure that our votes are guarded. Meron pa akong natitirang respeto sa taong yan. I hope he will not fail us.
He is one of the generals in the US Balikatan program so I hope this has not undermined his patriotism.
The choice of Sabban over Martir as Marine commandant is good news and that of Barias not so good. But there are more dark economic clouds hovering over Pinoyland, as if Ate Glue and her spendthrift gallivanting were not trials enough. On top of the foreboding 300 billion fiscal deficit this year and Yap’s allegedly overpriced imports of rice, we may also see the return of rice queues of rationed NFA rice in May 2010. If the predicted El Niño of 2009-2010 drought is severe, the second rice crop may not materialize, and the third may not even be planted. The corn harvest may be short for hog and chicken feed. Be ready to tighten your belts, folks. I hope ‘Lie Fajardo refrains from recommending cake to eat in lieu of rice.
Martir will go on Terminal leave soon at tatakbo na sa US. Confirmed ito. Dun niya uubusin yung leave balance niya at saka magre-retire in 2010.

Pag naging US citizen na yan, hindi na siya entitled sa pension na iyon. But if he gets dual citizenship (as Pinoy ang Kano), he will still get the best of both worlds. Martir will still enjoy the fruits of his “labor” na nakamkam niya under nunal.

Ang problema, malamang na pag wala na si Martir dito, makakalimutan na rin yung mga kaso niya and eventually, “malilinis” ito para maka-retire siya properly at kumubra for his Terminal Leave and 3-year Lump Sum Pension.

I remember seeing Maj. Gen. Sabban sometime before the May 1, 2009 retirement of then CSAFP Gen. Alexander Yano. Gen. Sabban reported the latest MILF-RP troops encounter in Mindanao to the Chief of Staff.
At one time, I met Maj. Gen. Martir at the reception area of the OCSAFP while he was waiting his turn to meeth Gen. Yano. I did not realized until now that both were contenders for the position of Commandant, Philippine Marines.
Whatever, I hope that our Marines will be loyal to our Constitution even it is not ‘flawless’and not to the appointing power.

I am far, far away from you, but I do know all the heroic deeds you have shown to the whole world that led to the elimination of the dreaded Abu Sayyaf chieftain Janjalani and loud mouth Abu Sabaya. I still remember you, sometime in April 1978, fresh from the PMA, you walked into our barracks at the Philippine Marine Training Center and reported to me like a dumbguard but I already sensed something from you that someday you will have a bright future in the Marine Corps. Hope you don’t forget our friends who are still languishing in solitary confinement like Major-General Renato Miranda, Col. Ariel Querubin and other fellow Marines whose faith and devotion to the name of service have brought them and their families untold sufferings and hardships. Mabuhay ka, Gen. Sabban!

Ikaw ang pag-asa ngayon ng sambayanang Pilipino. Sa iyong mga kamay nakasalalay ang katuparan ng matagal nating ipinaglalabang pagbabago mula pa noong 1989.
Ilan na ang napalagay sa poder na dapat ay ginamit sa tama at hindi ‘yung pagsasawalang kibo. Silang mga nauna sa iyo ay mas pinili ang tawag ng mapanlinlang na kapangyarihan at kinang ng salapi kaysa ipagtanggol ang katarungang pinipilit igapos ng tanikala ng pagkagahaman ng namamayaning ganid sa malakanyang.

Sana’y nararamdaman mo pa rin hanggang ngayon ang alab ng pakikibaka upang makamtan ang tunay na pagbabago. Sana’y nasa iyo pa rin ang adhikaing maiahon mula sa kumunoy ng kasinungalingan ang halos naghihingalo nating lipunan at masagip mo mula sa pagkakasakmal ng pangil ng gahaman ang bayang iyong sinumpaang ipagtatanggol at ipagsasanggalang laban sa anumang lakas na magtatangkang siya ay pagsamantalahan at pugayan ng dangal.

Sana ako’y nagkakamali, pero malaki ang aking pagdududa sa pagkakatalaga ni GMA kay Sabban. Hindi gagawin ni GMA ang magtalaga ng isang heneral na dito pa sa Metro Manila ang headquarters katulad ng Marines kung di niya tiyak ang loyalty nito sa kanya.

It looks like we were right all along that the incarceration of the Tanay Boys is just the works of the evil asspweron. Manang mana talaga sa amo niyang boobuwit!
If Gen Maclang sent in his position that if he were summoned, he will testify FOR the accused, then now Mayuga clears them of their supposed crime of mutiny, lumiliwanag na talaga ang kaso ng mga Tanay Boys. Sobrang bigat ang mga pinagdaanan nitong mga ito talaga and they should be released soon! I think there are two more topenotch officers to testify. I would like asspweron on the stand so he will squirm at the cross examination just like the John rat. Yan tuloy ni hindi pumasa kay boobuwit. Between Sabban ang John rat, parang heaven and earth ang diperensiya. Kahit na sabihin natin na naaambunan din si Sabban paminsan minsan siguro, still Sabban is still a far better officer!

Chi, they have to have all the witnesses on the stand before the court martial is wrapped up. The asspweron I think needs to be put on the stand too and Senga. Sila na lang na dalawa yata ang naiiwan na witnesses. Maclang was the one who accompanied Lim and Querubin to Senga’s office and if he says he will witness for the accused, he should have known what really transpired in Senga’s office. Tignan natin kung yung ambassadorial position ni Senga is enough to bribe him to testify to something that never happened. I think Senga is more principled than the ass. But let us listen to what he says. I hope the court martial wraps up soon for the sake of the families of the detained and they can put their lives together away from all the intrigues borne by the incarceration. Instead of helping these incarcerated, some POWERS are taking advantage of the situation to create more chaos to the detained. The detained should know better. Hang in there gang! I am happy for the Filipino Marines among us, who because of high standard of discipline and dedication to service and the combat profession, deserve a commandant with an equally high standard of discipline, and combat leadership who could steer the unit to accomplish its mission and could secure the welfare of his men, amidst stormy seas.
