Arroyo would be treated with civility if she comes to Cory’s wake : Noynoy

Update: Cory will be buried on Wednesday, Aug.5, at the family’s plot at the Manila Memorial park beside her husband, the late senator Benigno Aquino, Jr.

Necrological rites on Tuesday evening.

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said personally, he “would not totally welcome Gloria Arroyo and Imelda Marcos” but if they come to the wake of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, they would be treated with “civility.”

In an interview by David Celdran on ANC, Noynoy said he was expressing personal views and that the matter would have to be discussed by the family. “I would not totally welcome (Arroyo’s visit) but we have been taught civility, he said.

Asked if the same applies to Imelda Marcos, he replied “yes.”

Aquino said a number of Malacañang officials called up offering assistance and asking how they could be of help and they were told that so far the efforts of the family and friends have sufficed.

Asked if the family has received a call from mrs. Arroyo, he said, “I’m not really waiting for that (but if it comes) , there’s the issue of civility.”

“We are civil, educated individuals, treat them appropriately whoever they are,” he said.

Earlier ABS-CBN reported that the Aquino family has decided on a private funeral for the late President Corazon Aquino, who died early morning Saturday after battling colorectal cancer for more than a year.

Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said they have decided to have a private funeral, instead of a state funeral.”It won’t be a state funeral,” the senator said.

“That was the intention from the start,” he said, adding that nobody from the presidential office had contacted him “nor am I waiting to talk to anybody there.

Aquino said they government money to be spent for a state funeral would best be used for the people at this time of economic crisis.

From Washington D.C , where she had a 30-minute meeting with US President Barack Obama Friday, Arroyo sent a video message noting that Aquino, “helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril.”

Arroyo declared a ten day period of national mourning.

Reports said Arroyo is cutting short her US trip to pay her last respects to Aquino.

Although Aquino helped in installing Arroyo to the presidency without election in 2001 she had called for the latter’s resignation following the public disclosure of the “Hello Garci” tapes that Arroyo together with then Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano conspired to rig in her favor the results of the 2004 elections.

  1. Gloria Arroyo’s message:

Today, the Philippines lost a national treasure. Cory Aquino helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril.

Our nation will mourn her passing.

History was thrust upon her when her noble husband was cut down in the prime of his life as he fought for democracy and the rule of law. She picked up the standard from the fallen warrior, Ninoy, and helped lead our nation to a brighter day.

I am announcing today that we will officially observe a ten day period of national mourning.

Our hearts go out to the family in this hour of grief and sorrow. The nation prays for Cory and her family.

  2. Message of Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile:

“On behalf of the Philippine Senate and the members of my family, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved children of former President Corazon Aquino, especially to my colleague, Sen. Benigno Noynoy’ Aquino III.

“The demise of President Aquino is not only a loss to her loved ones, but is also an immense loss to the entire nation as well.

“President Aquino’s contribution to the well-being of the country cannot be measured by mere words, structures and monuments for she has done much, much more. She played the key role in this nation’s struggle for freedom, and she has done noble service in the restoration of democracy in our society.

“Although, by a twist of fate, we have had differences and disagreements in politics, I have always held President Aquino in high regard and great respect as a worthy leader of our people.

“As a Filipino, and as a former member of her cabinet, I believe the nation owes her much, having sacrificed her life in the service of our people. She thus truly deserves the prayers, respect, admiration and appreciation of the Filipino people.

“My family and I will continue to pray that the Dear Lord Almighty will take her in His divine embrace and give her eternal repose. We shall likewise pray for comfort and peace for her bereaved children and their families during these most trying moments of their lives.”

  3. From former President Joseph Estrada:

Today is a sad day in the history of our country for today our nation lost a mother. President Aquino has been not only an icon of democracy but has stood as the guiding voice of our people since the Edsa People Power Revolution. She was a woman of both strength and graciousness. We wish she could have lived longer because the country needs her especially now that our Constitution is being threatened anew. Now we must honor her by practicing the principles embodied in our Constitution that she stood by – truth, justice, freedom, love – and by fighting for our democracy as she did.

  4. Senator Manny Villar:

I join the entire nation in sending my condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of former President Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino.

The overflowing amount of prayers and support that Filipinos from all walks of life—from the slum dwellers to the members of the working class and the elite society—are truly a testament as to how much Cory was loved and how deep was her impact to all of us. In life and in death, she is a unifying presence.

Many will remember her as the grieving widow of Ninoy Aquino who launched the People Power—a peaceful and bloodless revolution that the whole world is still in awe of until now. Besides ‘people power’ though, she also instilled in Filipinos, through example, that prayers can be just as powerful.

But more than an icon of democracy and a great Filipina, Cory was a devoted wife, a dedicated mother, a doting lola, and a dear friend to many. Our family’s prayer is for them to find healing and comfort with the grace of God.

The same kind of dignified courage she demonstrated in her presidency was the same kind of courage she displayed throughout her battle with colon cancer. And now she is free of pain and will join her Creator.

Let us keep Cory’s legacy of democracy, unity and honesty alive.

  5. Message of the United Opposition (UNO), NCR Chair Joseph Victor Ejercito, San Juan mayor.

“Cory Aquino will always be remembered as the guiding light in the Filipino’s struggle to regain democracy.

“We express our most profound sympathies over the death of former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino. A great mother and leader in times of crisis, we thank God for giving us such a wonderful gift of a President.”

“Mrs. Aquino championed press freedom and embodied people power against the Marcos dictatorship. She will always be looked upon as an icon of democracy and a symbol of courage.

“Mrs. Aquino’s death should be a reminder to the Filipinos that the country’s democracy must be continually safeguarded. Probably the best contribution we could all accord to Mrs. Aquino is to carry on our fight for accountability in government.”

“We should all maintain Mrs. Aquino’s fight for democracy. Her death is timely for us Filipinos to once again unite.”

  6. and i’d say na pag pumunta SILA, ang kapal talaga nang mga muka nila! grrr!!! (sorry, medyo galit lang ako)

I don’t agree with the senator for not accepting the state funeral, what I meant was, Pres Aquino was a President of the Republic, and a state funeral is the least thing that the Filipino people can give what tita cory gave us “FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY”.

The Filipino people owe it to tita cory, as she is fondly called by many of us. However, if it is the decision of the family, to have a private funeral, so be it, we have to respect the decision of the family.

When, and if the the leprechaun visits the wake (which she will do), people in the wake cannot be controlled on how they react when the bitch arrives. Civility, I agree with the Aquino family, but to hell with the bitch, she doesn’t deserve it.

On the last note, I salute and pray for the everlasting peace and THANK YOU, MADAME PRESIDENT CORAZON COJUANGCO AQUINO FOR THE FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY THAT YOU GAVE US.

GODSPEED, WHEREVER YOU ARE NOW MADAME PRESIDENT AQUINO.

  8. From former Senate President Franklin Drilon:

The death of former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino is a personal loss to me.

Whatever I have learned about good governance, I have learned by watching her closely during her days in Malacanang and during her post-presidency days as Citizen Cory.

During the last year of her presidency, people close to her argued that since she came into office as a revolutionary president and not elected under the 1987 Constitution, she was eligible to run in the 1992 presidential election. She would have none of that. She firmly believed that a peaceful transfer of power to the next president was critical to the preservation of our democracy. She was, indeed, an icon of Philippine democracy.

Her legacy of restoring democracy in the Philippines after the many dark years of the Marcos dictatorship and her resolve to strengthen and preserve our democratic institutions will live long in our hearts. Likewise, her determined efforts to bring decency and honesty in governance will serve as an inspiration to Filipinos in the generations to come.

President Aquino came to power not by her liking but by a twist of fate. Yet she accepted her role and responsibility with humility, strength, and simplicity. And when it was time to make her exit, she did so not just with grace but also with leadership. I can only hope that those who come after her can still follow her example.

We shall continue to live by her principles. We shall carry on her untiring crusade for the promotion of democratic ideals and good governance. In our hearts, Cory, like her martyred husband Ninoy, will live forever.

Goodbye Cory. A grateful nation salutes you

  9. Just goes to show na marami pang dapat matutuhan ang mga pilipino. People like Cory Aquino deserves a state funeral.
    Bakit hindi iyan gagawin?

I bet there are a lot many foreign leaders and dignitaries who would like to pay their last respect to her. Iyon hindi pagbibigay ng state funeral sa kaniya with or without the national economic crisis, ay malinaw na pambabastos ng baluga sa kaniya.

  10. From the Philippine National Red Cross:

The Philippine National Red Cross grieves for the nation as we lost a great leader today – President Cory Aquino. She is a great loss to our country and to humanity.

Cory Aquino will always be honored for restoring freedom in the country. She has been a powerful inspiration in uniting the Filipino people several times during her lifetime. And until this very moment, she still has the power of uniting the nation- with one intention in praying for the eternal repose of her soul.

Cory led the restoration of democracy and changed the Philippine Constitution that propelled a brighter future for our country. She is woman of faith and courage. Her moral leadership was the beacon that guided the Filipino people. She reinstated our democratic institutions and ruled with truthfulness and bravery.

In 2006, as a tribute to her contribution to humanity, she was named by Time magazine as one of Asia’s heroes, praising her “quiet courage” and describing her as “the symbol of People Power and an inspiration to others around the world struggling against tyranny.”

In retirement, she remained in the public eye, often speaking against alleged abuses in the country. Even beyond her service to the country as its highest official, President Cory’s example of faith, strength and selflessness lives on to be the Filipinos’ guiding light.

Until her last years as a private citizen, she remained a strong political influence and moral force. She is known as an international icon of democracy and left a legacy of moral leadership to the country.

Her family has been our calm and constant partner in our mission of alleviating human suffering. Their support to the PNRC helped us avail of additional equipment for our Blood Bank and serve the most vulnerable. The generosity of PNRC’s former Honorary President Cory Aquino and her family will always be appreciated.

We are extending our condolences to her family and relatives. All our prayers are dedicated for the eternal repose of her soul. Her heroism and service to humanity will always be remembered.

Our prayers are with you, Cory Aquino.

  13. chi chi

I fully agree with the decision of Noynoy and his siblings to hold a private funeral for their beloved mother. With a state funeral, Gloria and her kapalmuks gang will only force themselves into the scene.

    Yes to potpot’s comment.

  14. chi chi

Gloria Makapal Arroyo and Imelda R. Marcos are made of the same stuff, tupperware!

  15. From Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, president of the United Opposition:

I join the nation in mourning the passing of former president Corazon Aquino.

Cory Aquino was the personification of humility and selfless service, both as a public official and as a private citizen.

Her faith in the Almighty steered her through the many trials that she faced. I have often wondered how she kept her composure even in the most trying moments. I now believe her quiet fortitude came from her unshakeable belief in God, her belief that He does not give us trials that we cannot bear.

Cory Aquino provided us with the leadership we needed during those crucial years of rebuilding our democracy. She was with us even when she was plain citizen Cory, joining the ranks of nameless, faceless Filipinos each time democracy and truth came under threat from the forces of tyranny.

She was and will always be Cory Aquino, the mother of the nation and the shining example of national leadership that we sorely need today.

(Mayor Jojo Binay was the first local official appointed by former president Aquino immediately after the February 1986 EDSA Revolution)

im disappointed that tita cory will not get a state funeral. i hope the family reconsiders… she is not only an aquino but a filipino. she belongs to the entire nation. let our taxes be used to honor someone like cory who is a true filipino hero. pls. reconsider… lets give her a decent and proper burial beffiting her name and contribution to the world. i hope clinton, hirohito, bolkiah, prince charles will go.. and the pope… she is a big loss to the world….

  18. Where’s the message from Imelda Marcos? Would Imelda be treated with civility when she comes to the wake?

Cory died without knowing who was the real mastermind in Ninoy’s assassination…or she already knew who it was?

  19. From Col. Ariel Querubin:

“I would like to send my deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to the family of the late President Corazon C. Aquino. It is no secret that I was one of those who led the coup against her administration in 1989 and I am glad that 20 years thereafter, the wounds brought about by that exercise have begun to heal. It is my regret that I never had the chance to meet her personally or even just shake her hands in this lifetime. Since the 2006 Marine Stand-off in Fort Bonifacio, I wanted to personally thank her for heeding my call to a peaceful protest. Amidst Proclamation 1017 at that time, she braved the dark of the night and the anti-riot police to be one with the people in prayer. Through the years, I have learned to admire her bravery and courage very much. She was brave up to her final moments.

Last Mother’s Day, I had the opportunity to send her flowers and a message of prayer for her recovery.

Pres. Aquino stood for freedom and democracy, ideals many of us share. With her passing, I hope that what she stood for lives on and that many, especially those in the military, will take inspiration from her values and the principles she lived by.

At this time of national grief, and in her honor, I give my former Commander-in-Chief my snappy salute. Farewell, Mrs. President…

  20. Hmpt! Sorry ha? Pero duda ko, kaartehan lang yung number 1. Out of “napilitan lang”.

  21. The Evil Bitch declared 10 days of mourning for Cory. Another political act to soften the anger of the people.

Cory had friends both from the administration and opposition. Expect several political foes to meet one another at the wake. Would her cousin Danding Cojuangco also attend? I’m sure Erap will. When Cory was still strong staying at her Times residence in QC, Erap used to send food for her on a weekly basis. No less than daughter Kris Aquino said this. And whenever Erap had special occasions like his birthday, Cory always reminded and encouraged her son Noynoy to attend. Indeed, the two (Cory and Erap) had become the best of friends. What was more significant was when Cory apologized for what she did in Edsa Two. Who could match her humility and sincerity?

    Gloria Arroyo’s message:

Today, the Philippines lost a national treasure. Cory Aquino helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril…….

    *****************************************

A message as dry and arid as sand in the desert.

Who would believe and appreciate a scripted act from a deceit?

Knowing this sad event is being watched by the whole world, the shameless woman tries to steal a moment to be heard appearing to be sympathetic but in reality rejoices having one of the thorns in her throat already gone.

    But she’s wrong!

The place that PRESIDENT Cory vacated in our midst is being filled by not only a thousand people but MILLIONS of souls craving for JUSTICE!

For now, the MOST respected LADY of Philippine politics and the world is not only a symbol of democracy. PRESIDENT CORAZON COJUANGCO AQUINO is the guiding light, the symbol of unity and strength of the entire Filipino people against the tyrant.

  23. kabkab kabkab

  24. kabkab, the rebel officers and soldiers at that time had the same reason as what the Magdalo group is fighting for right now. They believed Cory was not the duly elected President. The snap election was won by Marcos but at that time, people’s minds were already conditioned by his enemies that if he won, it would be fraud and cheating; and if he lost, it would be the will of the people. Remember that Marcos’ ouster was a grand conspiracy among many sectors including the church and US. But in fairness to Cory, she was an unwilling President unlike this current Evil Bitch who’s a very willing fake President.

  25. From Ramon Mayuga:

The passing of former President Cory Aquino greatly diminished us Filipinos. Her dying makes a part of us die, too, because she had dedicated her life for us as her husband Ninoy did before. We knew it was coming and we have prepared ourselves for its arrival.

But even then we cannot help but be stupefied by its coming. French writer Gustave Flaubert put it poignantly when he wrote, “Anyone’s death always releases something like an aura of stupefaction, so difficult is it to grasp this irruption of nothingness and to believe that it has actually taken place.”

It has and the bells would toll for us all. But we do not have someone with the stature of Jawaharlal Nehru to say that “The light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere,” nor have we one with the eloquence of Ted Kennedy to eulogize Cory and say, “Cory need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what she was in life. She should be remembered simply as a good and decent housewife, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, … Those of us who loved her, … pray that what she was to us and what she wished for others will someday come to pass for all the world.”

Cory is gone from the life she fully lived because she was loved and revered. Her departure most assuredly made millions of us sad.

There are those who make others mad wherever they go, and glad whenever they go. These are those who are so unloved and disliked, who live a life half dead and therefore living death.

But for all of us who are heirs to the legacy Cory leaves behind, she will always be alive in our memory as her husband who died so that others may live.

Long live, Cory, Long live Ninoy, long live our country.

Oue deepest condolences to her family in their hours of bereavement.

  26. Gabriela Gabriela

Arroyo’s message: “Today, the Philippines lost a national treasure. Cory Aquino helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril.”

Yes, she “restored democracy and the rule of law” which you destroyed.”

    Hypocrite!

  27. Balweg Balweg

What was more significant was when Cory apologized for what she did in Edsa Two. Who could match her humility and sincerity?

  28. During the 1986 Snap Election (the biggest mistake committed by Marcos), the opposition had only one candidate in the person of Cory Aquino. What if there were more than one candidates? Would the outcome be different? Compare then to today…lots of candidates from the opposition. If the opposition truly wants to beat the administration, it has to act now and be united. Otherwise, there is no option but to support Erap if he decides to run since he’s undeniably the strongest and the most genuine candidate of the opposition. It’s a choice between allowing an administration candidate to win and one from the opposition even if he has eligibility problems. Erap’s threat to run if the opposition fails to unite is nothing but a sincere desire to come up with a common candidate because like many, he believes that only a common candidate supported by the opposition and people have the chance to win over the administration. Now we understand Erap…

  30. The best show of respect that Gloria Baluga can give Cory now is to step down as the deceased has asked her to do. Then and only then can we be sure that Mrs. Aquino will really be able to rest in peace.

Gloria Baluga, baba na! But as everybody says, walanghiya at kapalmuks na talaga ang animal kapag nagpunta iyan sa wake ni Mrs. Aquino, private o state funeral pa siya.

As for Imelda, mas mabuting huwag siyang magpapakita doon total di naman niya kaibigan si Mrs. Aquino.

I am wondering why this Ms Dinky Soliman “Before the arrival of Mrs. Aquino’s remains, Soliman expressed in a radio interview her grief over the death of the former president.

Pero nagpapasalamat kami dahil pinakita niya ang lakas at tapang ng isang pangkaraniwang tao (I am saddened that she did not live to see the day that democracy was achieved. Even so, we are thankful that she was able to display courage and strength of a regular individual),” Soliman said. – Aie B. See and Mark Merueňas, GMANews.TV

  49. Bukang Liwayway Bukang Liwayway

    bananas,

Huwag namang ganyan, kaibigan.

Ako man po nung una kong narining kay Noynoy na they are not inclined to accept it if it is offered kasi Tita Cory deserves it. But after hearing the real story behind, muntik ako ma high blood!! Baboy talaga ang kasalukuyang administrasyon!! Grabe!!

  51. JKD JKD

Unless na demolition engineer ka, that explains your inane and useless opinions. You can disagree without being disagreeable (that is, if you know how).
For somebody like you who claims to be an engineer, you sure do not talk the talk.
What a coincidence !!

  52. Kim Kim

They are all crap.

  53. Abki Abki

  54. KIwi KIwi

    engr rf,
may LUCID INTERVAL ka, you need psychiatrist

  55. chi chi

  63. parasabayan parasabayan

Nagpapapapel lang si Bitch. This is what she is good at but more than 75% of all Filpinos hate her to the core!

I would have done the same thing if I were in the family of the Aquinos. Iitsa pwera ko si boobuwit sa limelight. This is our last tribute to Cory, a gracious and loving leader!
