Noynoy: ‘No point in competing with my parents’ (Q&A)

Benigno Aquino III
Benigno Aquino III

SEN. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s strength—the legacy of his parents—is also his weakness. Blessed with sudden popularity reflected in the presidential surveys, he has become the favorite punching bag of every presidential wannabe.

Aquino enjoys a 60 percent rating in the most recent nationwide survey of the Social Weather Stations on presidential aspirants. A previous SWS survey in Luzon showed half the respondents favoring him.

Thrust into the presidential race without the usual preparation of a serious contender, the only son of martyred senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and revered former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino has been the object of political innuendoes from rivals who question his readiness to be president. Does the younger Aquino have what it takes to duplicate, if not surpass, the track record and greatness of his parents?

Aquino was subjected to a series of questions about his personal background and achievements during his more than 11 years in Congress—nine years as representative of Tarlac and more than two years as senator. The following is a transcript of a one-on-one interview of Aquino, the Liberal Party standard-bearer, by Probe Profiles’ host Cheche Lazaro.

  1. Ellen,

I read Vera File report dilegently up to half of Page 4 then I scanned bottom half.

I’m afraid Noynoy’s replies are not impressive.

They were hazy, non-committal at best. I lifted some of the questions and answers for furter disection but the only one question to which he gave a more or less direct reply was this:

    Q: EO 464.
A: No such thing under my term. There has to be transparency.

But proof that Noynoy will not be the president that this country needs is based on his convoluted reply to this question.

Q: Si GMA ba kakasuhan mo?
A: First of all, I want closure dun sa many issues and she seems to be either directly, peripherally involved in some of these. Having said that, my father did teach me rather that democracy’s test is your ability to defend the rights of your enemies, especially, not just of your friends. So, in our system, innocent until proven guilty. I will ensure that she gets all of her rights–people around her, etc, members of this current administration. At the end of the day, I want closure. Yung pasensyahan na lang kung san umabot.

  2. I am convinced he is a very decent person. But I’m afraid his calling is that for priesthood and not for the presidency.

    Anna:

Now u know why Pamapanga voted Among Ed. . . Sa dami ng bulok na nangyayari sa gobyerno natin, Noynoy, many people here will surely disagree, is like a whiff of fresh air that will hopefully deodorize the stink enveloping us. Afterl all these years of unabated corruption in our midst, you cannot blame people for casting their lot in him. Read how he explained his role as a legislator? Napahiya yung nangangantiyaw. It’s really difficult to second-guess a soft-spoken and quiet individual. Bihira lang magsalita pero alam mong matalino at malalim mag isip pag tinanong mo. Very deliberate at di padalos-dalos unlike sa iba na ang lakas ng loob na sabihin what may be popular for the moment only to eat their words the following day. Magagaling magsalita. Talo pa ang mga salesman kung bumanat. Kakambyo nga lang pag di bumenta. . .

  4. chi chi

I admire the values of this family. I like the person of Noynoy, in fact.

If the 60% approval would bring him to the presidency, I have no qualms. Unfortunately, I’m searching for something new that would usher us to a new era of politics. It might not be possible this time but it’s worth a try.

In case Noynoy wins, my only wish which is DOABLE when he’s up there is: huwag mong pagpasensyahan si Gloria Arroyo!

  5. I’m disappointed why Che-Che Lazaro didn’t ask about Kris Aquino. What role Kris has in his life and how is he going to handle her.

Che-Che dwelt too much on the past.

  6. chi chi

  7. From Cita Garcia:

Sure, Noynoy has got what it takes to be president something others do not only have but they are incapable of having it.

It simply is not in their blood. Noynoy is endowed with ideal parents, one is a martyr, another was a president who beat the most dreaded dictator Marcos; both left a legacy no one in the history of the PHilippines has done.Inggit lang ang ibang candidato kay Noynoy.

  8. henry90 henry90

Ang problema kasi sa atin, we tend too much to depend sa isang namumuno to bring us out of the rut that we are in. That is why napakadali nating madisillusion kung walang kwenta ang namumuno. Me thinks Noynoy will be a transformational president IF he wins next year. More than the managerial acumen, a leader should inspire hope among his people.

The problems that we are stuck with for the last 30 years can not be solved in one term. People should not expect instant miracles. They’ll just get frustrated. But we should start with decency in government. Like corruption, decency can also be infectious. Same is true with a decent leader at the helm. Goodness begets goodness. Respect and trust follow and hopefully, the 3 branches of government can do their thing with mutual respect. We don’t expect our president to be superman who will solve all the problems we have in society. Precisely why we should have a working(?) government bureaucracy in the first place.

But we expect our president to be decent in working for our welfare and to defend our God-given rights in order to live decent lives. We dont want a President whom we will disown if we are in foreign soil. And above all, we don’t want a President who makes us want to forget that we are Filipinos after all. That before Gloria Arroyo became president, we are a proud people. . . Other people just dont get it even if reality stares them in the face. . . We dont need your Money. . . we dont need your cheesy talk. . . we dont need your “Para sa MaErap”. . . Enough. . .

  9. Q: You were, in a manner of speaking, pinanganak sa isang sikat na pamilya, isang pamilyang may pera. Pa’no kayo naging ganun kasimple, ang mga magulang mo? Nung lumalaki ba kayo, buhay mayaman ba kayo? Anong klaseng buhay yung meron niyo?
A: I don’t think they were one to splurge. Yung, one time nga, kid, candy favorite. Talagang hoarding, talagang savoring each and every morsel of it. Suddenly, dad got the bag, and started–and told me, “‘Lika dito,” –my dad, magkasama kami. And everybody, he’d give the candy to. Talagang, even if they wanted a different bag, “Kumuha kayo rito.” Then my job, giving me the bag, empty the bag. Alam mo, hindi maganda ang swapang. After that, pag meron ka ulit nun, mag-share ka na, at least mase-save mo yung mga may ayaw. Yung nature, by example, yung pagbinati raw yung relo niya at some point in time, “Type mo ba? Sa yo na” to the people he gets to talk to. Tapos yung, I don’t know, parang from them, from out grandparents, wala talaga, hindi talaga inuso yung mag-splurge. If you wanted something–meron rin naman siguro, I mean we had a colored TV, hindi naman right away.

Totally wanting in substance, unfocused, and has difficulty structuring his replies. Liko dito, liko doon. Singit nito, singit niyan. Walang patutunguhan. That is where he will take us if and when he becomes president? He cannot even communicate with Cheche, let alone with his own mental faculties, how can he communicate with 90 million people? Sorry. I’m not impressed at all.

He knew beforehand that Cheche is conducting a series of interviews among the presidentiables. If this is the best he can come up with after preparing for it, I think he just lost this round. His handlers are doing a lousy job. This guy needs help.

  10. henry90 henry90

Dont think so. . . only shows his human and his image is no put-on. . .what u see is what u get. . .now we didnt get to hear others before him asked this type of question. . .puro pambobola. . .fake. . . it’s in the genes man, he was pointing out to Che-che asking him, on why inspite of their wealth, ganun pa rin sya kasimple. . . didnt find it hard to understand. . .

  11. lumangkuwago lumangkuwago

  12. Henry90,

Kulang ang one term, no instant miracles, not a superman, in fairness (pahiram, Kris Aquino) meron naman daw decent presidency, inspiring hope – yan din si Cory. All of it have been said of her too. Look what happened after 6 six years of EDSA I? As if it wasn’t enough, wasn’t Cory instrumental in delivering all of us to Gloria’s Hell on a silver platter?

If there’s one thing I can’t stand in our society, it’s the coddling of incompetents. Although I don’t go all out for geniuses (and their delusions of grandeur) either, there has to be a, er, decent measure, a minimum standard of competence, a hurdle rate that must be achieved most especially for one aspiring to lead 90 million people out of the frying pan? The pwede-na-yan mentality cannot and will not help us at all.

I’ve not even touched on the politics of genetics at all. Much less the skeletons in his closet (some say it’s a cemetery). Sheesh.

  13. kapinoyan kapinoyan

I think the regular posters here have made their respective choices between Noynoy and Chiz, and no one is for Gibo, Erap or Villar.

Each would have intelligent reasons for their respective choices, which should be respected and not put to task or insulted.

How about a survey here? I am for Noynoy.

A: No, no. Everything was attended to. Pero when you wanted something extra, you work for it. You want to buy this, you save. And then we were conscious, ‘no, going to a movie, for instance, parang nagbigay, my mom would give me, my dad would refrain from those, even if we wanted to.

Susmaryosep. Ano raw? My ten-year old son can construct his sentences more clearly and coherently. If Noynoy’s really a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type and this is all he can offer, then I’m not buying.

Compare it with this interview with Escudero:

Q: Oo. Pag sinasabi mong normal at saka average lang do you consider yourself rich, poor, what?
A: Middle class. So yung dating garahe, naging bahay namin.

    Or this portion with Gibo:

  15. henry90 henry90

    Tongue:

Tell that to the millions who will vote for him. Lest u forget, Cory never claimed anything except that she was just a transition president who restored democracy after Martial law. Pray tell me, who among the putative candidates will be able to solve the mess that we are in now? Who among them has the moral and intellectual honesty to exorcise the ghosts in the deepest recesses, cemeteries if u like, of government? It’s so easy for any candidate to say that, of course. But doing it is another thing. Let me say it again. . .The root cause of all of this is the dearth of good men in government. . . After 9 years of Gloria, people want respite from all the scandals that we have been accustomed to. . . We are ailing from within. . .no, we are sick in the minds for taking this wanton abuse from this government with nary a whimper. . . this is another edsa. . . laugh and ridicule all u want. . . me, i’ll just be happy with the thought that with the impending change in the presidency(sana di mausog), di na tayo babansagang most corrupt na bansa. And THAT to me is the most important accomplishment the incoming president will ever make. Lahat nang nasa wish list nyo, susunod yan. One problem at a time friends. . . restore trust and confidence in government first. . . peace. . .

  16. henry90 henry90

Sure, they may be the most articulate speakers in the world, Marcos was, Putot is, but so what? The question is? Do people trust them to walk the talk? It’s not the medium, it’s the message. Parang sa text messaging. ‘Here na me. Where na u?’ Difficult? Naah. . .

  17. chi chi

    kapinoyan,

Many regular posters here already identified themselves aligned with Erap, nun pa. In the loop “Joining Chiz Odessey”, you can meet some them, most also don’t go Gibo or Villar. We have common denominator though, ayaw lahat kay Gloria.

  18. kapinoyan,
I’m not decided yet though at present, I am partial to Escudero. Noynoy is second, Villar third, Erap fourth, Gibo last. If Gibo was not a Gloria lapdog, he would have been second with the rest sliding down one notch.

Especially with the arguments coming out for or against each one, Noynoy is fast slipping further down.

We have to thank Cheche Lazaro’s Probe Team and Vera Files for putting this online. I hope to tabulate the similar questions asked of each candidate so we can judge them side by side.

I was trained in my previous jobs to test the limits of one’s product then compare it with the competitors’ just to get some sort of confidence into the salespeople’s systems. The end view is to give the customers the best alternative. If one product does not stand the rigors of Quality Assurance, we reject it and send it back to the designers. That basically is how we make crucial decisions. I use it whether in business, family or even the selection of presidents.

  19. “Cory never claimed anything except that she was just a transition president who restored democracy after Martial law.”

The same democracy Cory handed over to Gloria who has since single-handedly destroyed all vestiges of legality and morality in practically all the institutions. Thank you, Cory?

    Nah.

  20. Oblak Oblak

I watched Probe and read the interview.

The negative sides: lack of eloquence, too simplistic and too cautious.

The positive sides: not pretentious, shows he is a decent person and clean image

Based on the interview, there is something between Noynoy’s ears. I see him more of a Cory than a Ninoy.

  21. rose rose

…when cory was elected president marami ang hindi believe sa kanya, pero she did what she had to do (kahit siya ay isang housewife lamang)..and she was a good prsident.
…marcos was intelligent par excellence..he did what he did…was he a good president?
…erap was popular para sa mahihirap..para sa masa..was he a good president?
…naging presidente si gloria..matalino, may doctorate, naging senador, naging vice presidente..is she doing her job as pangulo (sa tingin ng marami siya ay pang gulo)?..
…hindi natin alam ang kapasidad ni Noy Noy..who knows..but he seems to be a man of God..is that not a good sign? God knows best for our country…and we do not! ang sabi nga bahala ang Dios!

  22. henry90 henry90

It’s very seldom that I would get myself to be identified with any candidate. Must be the structured system of the military which i served for more than 20 years. First was the snap elections in 86 and now. Cory and Noy are the two people who I respect so much. Being up-close with them, not necessarily personal, is an experience like no other. Serving under the PSG during that time is like serving your own family. Cory has none of the trappings of power. Down to earth, often solicitous of the well-being of the lowly soldiers. Noy is no different. Tahimik, simple, mabait sa tao, walang ere. Malimit ayaw na may kabuntot na security. These are the same traits that endear him to many Filipinos. Yun bang alam mong di ka aabusuhin. He maybe average Joe to many Filipinos, but for us who had the opportunity to serve the Aquino family during those difficult times, nakatatak na sa isipan namin yun na may tiwala kami kay Noy at di nya kami lolokohin. He had tasted power before and his feet remained firmly on the ground. He was the de facto First Gentleman. And he never did anything to tarnish the Presidency of his mother. And many people are still surprised why Filipinos trust him?

  23. henry90 henry90

The same democracy Chiz and the spice boys handed over to Gloria who has since single-handedly destroyed all vestiges of legality and morality in paractically all the institutions. Thank you, Chiz?

    Nah. . .

  24. Oblak Oblak

  25. henry90 henry90

http://www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=2643. . .Sabi ni xman sa kabilang thread, this is a blast from the past. . .
agree. . . . .

  26. Mike Mike

Walang kwenta, mas binasa ko pa interview kay Chiz and Gibo. Half way reading palang inantok na ako. Ho-hum…zzzzzzzzzz!

I wonder whose post is this?

  28. Mike Mike

I beg to disagree with Oblak regarding “sinunod ang constitution”. They totally disregarded the constitution. It was a coup de tat, mob rule all rolled into one. And the result? Gloria!!! Grrrrr!!!!

  29. henry90 henry90

And this. . .”The first time I saw Chiz pic here at Ellenville, I thought …oi guapo and young, but somethings are missing. He does not have the IT” and intellectual honesty of Trillanes. This current line of him, “We have already suffered and sacrificed for seven years, what is two years?” pictured the real him. Chiz Escudero is empty, as empty as his ninang Gloria’s heart!

Read mo ba Chiz?!”

  30. Who among them has the moral and intellectual honesty to exorcise the ghosts in the deepest recesses, cemeteries if u like, of government?

If it’s Noynoy who will, well he can start by recalling their plan to coalesce with NPC. Or has that been forgotten already?

How do you exorcise the devils when they are now working in your monastery? Impossible.

  31. Mike Mike

Gloria should not be the successor of Erap in the first place since she and the so called civil society and leftist group started planning the coup since day one of the Erap presidency. This was admitted by Gloria herself in an interview… with pictures taken with leftist group. Forgot the name of the magazine that interviewed her.

  32. parasabayan parasabayan

If Noynoy wins, I do not have a problem with him. But I have a problem with Uncle Danding Cojuangco, the man who is greedy, walang kbusugan sa pera at kapangyarihan.

  33. Mike Mike

While we are arguing now about who is the more qualified candidate to become the next president. Rep. Danilo Suarez commented in an interview that if Gloria does not run for congressman in Pampangga, she could try the vice presidency post. Watch out people, something is afoot!

  34. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

  35. parasabayan parasabayan

My dad always said that for one to succeed in life he has to have the brains, the muscles and his virtues. One who has only the brains but lacking the other two, becomes a criminal (mafia leader-sounds familiar?). And if one has all the virtues without the other two, he is best as a man of God. Noynoy can fall in the last category, I guess. Haven’t we had enough with Cardinal Sin, Cardinal Rosales and the likes of them? If Noynoy wins, the church runs the country anew. It is not a productive scenario. We will be in another 6 years of hybernation if Noynoy wins. Puro awa ang labas and this is the worst stumbling block in governance. Our next leader should be decisive, objective and competent. These qualities are lacking in Noynoy.

  36. chi chi

    henry,

Akin ba yan poste?

    chi – November 5, 2009 12:08 pm

xman, we react here based on current events, lahat nagbabago dahil fluid ang Pinas politics.

    __

I mentioned here many times na salawahan ako sa pagpili ng mga kandidato dahil ibinabase ko sa mga kasulukuyan nilang sinasabi at aksyon, I’m not FIXATED on anybody based on their past performances dahil nagiging wise o mas bobo sa dati ang mga politiko. Nothing remains the same, maliban siguro kay Gloria Arroyo.

When that topic came out, malayo naman talaga si Chiz kay Trillanes a! Ibig mong sabihin ay wala nang nangyari at nadagdag kay Chiz o kahit kanino sa kanila since then?

Kung mag-archive kayo (nasimulan na rin lang)…go to the topic when Erap was convicted of plunder.

  37. henry90 henry90

“How do you exorcise the devils when they are now working in your monastery? Impossible”

Try by standing by with ur beliefs/convictions for starters:“Sayang si Chiz. Lumabas ang tunay na pagkatao. Oportunista pala.

    Change of heart?

  38. henry90 henry90

    Chi:

No offense meant. . .didn’t mean to copy/paste ur post way back then. . .sorry po. . . .paiba-iba sinasabi depending on what is fashionable at the moment. . .bukas iba naman sasabihin. . .maaaring matatalino nga, pero walang character. . .mahirap yung ganun. . .Sorry Chi ha. . . di ko ma delete e. .

I don’t want my current and previous comments to be mistaken as posted by someone else.

So, I don’t have problems kung biglaan din akong bumoto kay Noynoy if he could impress me more than Chiz would in the coming months and NOW.

  43. “Sayang si Chiz. Lumabas ang tunay na pagkatao. Oportunista pala.

I wonder whose post is this?

Akin yan. I won’t deny it. Since you raised it, I feel compelled to explain. I have earlier dismissed Escudero as a possible choice because of his past association with NPC and Danding. It wasn’t only me who made it clear that Chiz was not in our radar because of this. I was a consistent Lacson supporter and when he backed out I was for Roxas.

As chi has said, Phil. politics is fluid and you play it as the game goes on. Inquirer’s slip started showing when it started dumping Roxas and the columnists began drafting Noynoy in his place. Even Alex Magno was batting for him, wow! Damn, it’s the same old EDSA I gang trying to be relevant again but since there was no other better choice, Noynoy naturally dislodged Roxas in my list, although I had reservations, as I said here : http://www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=7113.

The game changer was when Chiz decided to bolt NPC following Magdalo’s endorsement. I have always been a reform ideologue. Lacson, Roxas, Magdalo, Trillanes, Chiz were to me, the only plausible agents of change from the present crop.

Now, Noynoy continues his clueless journey, going where the puppet strings in the hands of trapos Drilon and Abad, Black and White, et al will take him. If that wasn’t stupid enough, they now announce a plan to coalesce with trapo party NPC which Chiz had just dumped. The music video released yesterday is the handiwork of old politics transforming itself and devouring youthful candidates like Noynoy, using artistas and celebrities to attract followers. Talk about “new politics”. My ass.

Now if Noynoy himself wants to be considered a reformist, I challenge him now, resign from your party. Leave Drilon et al to their trapo tools and prove that you are not like them.

So, judgement is based on previous work relations and impressions? I won’t question that because it is a personal choice. It’s not different, however, from the old Pinoy political practice of “kumpare system”.

Being partial to a particular candidate because you have not directly interacted with the other, although the latter has better leadership qualities than the former but both may have the same trait and character, is not impressive. Unless, you had made a promise you don’t want to break.

Rebuilding a house damaged by typhoons in a typhoon-prone area requires the best materials and craftsmen. It has to be built with good foundation and framework for future generations to live in. Therefore, a good architect/engineer is needed, not a so-so one.

No. 26, from Henry90: Posts from “So Young and so out of touch”. That was referring to Chiz Escudero.

Well, anyone can have a change of heart. I wonder, months from now, people can also change what they think and feel about Gloria and her family.

Mahirap talagang mamili ngayon dahil kung may brains, wala namang character. At kung may character, wala namang brains.

I wonder how all the pro-Chiz here would react if Chiz joins Villar. Chiz said, he will never join Villar but now he is changing his tune. Kung mag-explain daw si Villar sa Senate tungkol sa C5, Chiz will not close the door. Villar would be stupid to subject himself to the trigger happy presidentiables in the senate. Villar would as well have just put himself on the firing range ready for a bullseye shot or shots! I can see why Villar does not like to face his presidentiable colleagues. Daig pa niyang nagharakiri kapag nagkataon.

Back to Noynoy, I just read an article na may temper daw yung future first lady. Ibinabato daw niya yung cell phone niya kung nagagalit. Wow! Talk about making choices in life hah. After 50 years, iniwan na siya ni Korina and now his pick of his mate eh ala-putot pa. This really bothers me so much that at 50 ni wala pa siyang asawa o a stable relationship. Most man would have done everything and would be on their way back at 50! I have nothing against single people but at least at 50 eh mayroon man lang serious and stable relationship. I heard he is even a chain smoker pa!

  50. Mike Mike

    PSB,
Being a chain smoker is irrelevant as far as I’m concerned, but having a GF throwing tantrums (cellphone) here and there when something upsets her scares the sh*t out of me.

  51. Mike Mike

If he’d join Villar, definitely I’d pick someone else. I’m leaning towards him as a presidential wannabe, not VP.

  53. henry90 henry90

We’re talking here of CHARACTER. . .How can u trust somebody who says one thing and change his mind the following day? Who changes his mind for wont of a better gimmick to improve his numbers? I am willing to bet. . .Ipagpaumanhin na po nang aking mga tagapagtaguyod. Tao lang lang din po ako. . Nagbabago ang isip. . . Same same here Mike. We can not be in a hurry in picking the right one sa panlasa ng bawat isa. Let us respect everyone’s choices.

  55. chi chi

Detached ako sa tsismis as to their partners, it does not help in making the right choice. Hindi naman sila ang kandidato.

  57. Candidates run on vision, their goals an objectives, their aspirations for the country. From these values which are inherent in the candidate, you form your platform in order to achieve those. You work out a plan, including the financial and logistical requirements, the time frame, all directed towards a target. Basic management. Noynoy should know that.

Of all the candidates, Noynoy’s is probably the only one still unknown. You don’t work it backwards. It has to start with Noynoy’s vision. Not Drilon’s, not Roxas’. This is where leadership calls for only the competents and the prepared.

  58. If Chiz joins Villar, Noynoy na ako.

  59. If Noynoy coalesces with NPC, Erap na ako.

If Gibo runs with Erap, neknek niya, Hahaha!

I’m wary of people that’s surrounding the president especially spouses, one good example is FG and don’t forget Imeldific.

  62. parasabayan parasabayan

Hah,hah, hah…kaya nga wala pa akong manok dahil puro re-alignments pa ang nangyayari. When the dust settles doon pa lang maliwanag kung sino ang mga mamanukin ko sa presidentiables. 63. chi chi

Heto ang sa akin: Chiz, Noynoy, Erap. Big NO to Villar and Gibo.

Same here, if Chiz joins Villar dun ako sa number 2. Kung papalpak si Noynoy sa mga decisions before the elections kay Erap ako, kung tutuloy sya.

But I predict LP and NP lang ang matitira, sobrang dali na ang choice niyan.

  64. chi chi

Tsismis pa lang yan, Mike. Unfair naman kay Noynoy.

  65. henry90 henry90

And while we’re at it. I hope we all have learned our lessons. Kahit sino pang pinakamagaling na presidente ang manalo, kung si Chiz man basta sya ang ibonoto ng tao tatanggapin ko, if we will not make him accountable to the people, then wala ring kwenta. I hope that with decent candidates, we will have opinion-sensitive leaders who will have the best interest of the country first. Never again should we allow clones of Gloria to reign in our midst para ituloy ang kanyang mga nasimulan(read: Bigo) at di sya papanagutin(read: Money). . . .

  66. kapalmuks kapalmuks

If Chiz joins Villar, I will probably vote only VP and local officials (IF the choices are good…which means OUT si Loren).

But if Chiz joins Villar, I won’t vote for any presidential candidate. My vote is too valuable to throw away on crumbs.

  68. Mike Mike

    Chi,
Ya, I know tsismis lang yan. What I’m trying to point out lang is we should also be wary of people around the candidates. If you notice, Ellen also commented regarding Kris too (post #5).

About my post (#53), I was just joking… reacting to PSB’s comment lang. Hehehe 🙂

  69. parasabayan parasabayan

Henry, marami akong nasabi sa previous threads and most of what I said were in defense of all candidates and also the defects of each and everyone of them (just from my point of view). In this respect, I am very consistent! You can read all my blogs and I told negative and positive things about almost all of them! Wala pa talaga akong napupusuan hanggang ngayon.

  70. kapalmuks kapalmuks

    parasabayan:

“I wonder how all the pro-Chiz here would react if Chiz joins Villar. Chiz said, he will never join Villar but now he is changing his tune. Villar would as well have just put himself on the firing range ready for a bullseye shot or shots! I can see why Villar does not like to face his presidentiable colleagues. Daig pa niyang nagharakiri kapag nagkataon.”

Baka naman mali lang ako. But from what I recall, Chiz said he couldn’t tie up with Villar because of the many charges on C5 that Villar hasn’t addressed directly. As far as I recall, Chiz followed up this same point in the same article that he would listen to Villar if the latter would explain his side on the C5 charges. I didn’t take that to mean that Chiz would consider teaming up with him. If anything, it told me he was challenging Villar to make a clean breast of what the latter’s been concealing all along, which doesn’t seem likely for the same reasons you had pointed out in your post: Villar would not want to be cross-examined in the Senate and would rather have Allan Cayetano, Gilbert Remulla and Adel Tamano fight his battles for him. So I don’t see how Chiz’s interview can be summed up as a change in his tune. He, Villar and the entire nation all know Villar will not talk about C5 in the Senate, and a Chiz-Villar tandem would therefore be impossible.

But, as I said, in case that happens, then I’d withhold my vote for president rather than wasting it on anyone else in the race. By that point, all the candidates to me would be no better than crumbs:

Noynoy’s character is suspect if he surrounds himself and counts among his advisers all those Code NGO/Peace Bonds racketeers from Black-and-White, misty-eyed for the same cabinet positions under a Noynoy presidency. His character is doubly suspect when he needs to rely on the LP party and its stalwarts (e.g., Drilon) who knew about the 2004 cheating as it was going on and tolerated it. So much for Cory/Ninoy. Edsa IV? Hmmm….

As to Villar and Gibo, GMA is chanting, “Eenie meenie miney mo, sino’ng kandidato ko…Ba’t hindi sila’ng dal’wa?…Eenie meenie miney mo.” In fact, if Villar is really “galing sa mahirap,” I doubt he would be so cavalierly throwing money around as he is doing. In any case, even if GMA is not funding him, the staggering amounts he’s spending is just frightening: Are we to believe that he won’t try getting that back with a vengeance when he becomes president? He’ll be ten times worse than GMA…at this time, already the most crooked and worst president in history.

  71. parasabayan parasabayan

If you really believe in someone, you have to respect his choices. The bottom line is siya pa rin yung iboboto ninyo at hindi yung paryido o yung mga taong nakapaligid sa kanya. This is why I understand those who are die hard with Noynoy because of their first hand experience with him. Ganun din kay Chiz, how he lives a simple life and so on and so forth.

  72. parasabayan parasabayan

Tsk tsk kung yung tao eh may sikap at tiyaga at yumaman, does that mean he is a crook? I do not buy this idea of pre-judging Villar because he made it in life. I am however questioning Erap with his new gadgets. Why all of a sudden eh meron siyang mga airplane (following the footsteps of sabit), helipcopters and a fleet of cars. Sabagay, if you have an ambition, you have to give it your very best. I know that may kanya kanyang mga donors and mga ito although they (Erap and Villar) may be able to fund their own campaign, meron at meron pa ring mga tulong ang mga ito galing sa iba’t ibang sector.

Why do I have to follow him if I don’t like the party/presidentiable he’d choose to join with. That is the power of free will and respect of one’s choice. Hindi kelangang sundan sya hanggang kubeta.

  76. chi chi

    Sakto, kapalmuks.

Noynoy: ‘No point in competing with my parents’
If Noynoy said that, it’s the only thing that he made himself very clear so far, otherwise he’s so incoherent, vague and boring.

It’s true he has no need competing with his parents; they are not his opponents but only props and uses them as his gravy train riding it as far as it goes and squeezing dry the sauce up to last drop. Meaning he is an ultimate USER.

In the interview, if not a hypocritical, childish and non-sense, try this:

Che Che: Why are you talking to him (To Erap about unification?)

Noynoy: He does represent a certain segment of the population.

Holy mackerel and holy cow! What kind of answer was that? Did he understand the question? Maybe a screw in his antennae got loose. And so what? Everybody on his own right represents the population. Why did he not just answer that he needs the votes of Erap’s supporters to win? Talking of hypocrisy! He thought he made himself appeared smart, but in the process he made himself look like a school kid and a HYPOCRITE.

And he is running for president!

  78. Tedanz Tedanz

Erap is my guy.

  81. Tedanz Tedanz

    chi,

  82. chi chi

Klaro, tedanz. I like your openness.

“…mas mahal niyang Ninang si Susan Roces…”, hahaha! Katwiran yan ng mga tiyahin ko a (of course dahil kay Da King).

  85. Midway from the first page, i jumped right thru the end, hoping to find coherence, “tangible”, doable, answers. But sadly, there’s none.

Cory’s legacy is only the removal of Marcos who, with the benefit of hindsight, turned out to be the best president ever. Marcos have a more comprehensive Industrialization Plan, which every succeeding administrations sought to destroy by selling critical assets to private corporation. Read Economic Hitman by john Perkins to fully understand what i’m talking about.

If Cory is for the people, why she hasn’t implemented the Waterfuel Technology of Engr. Daniel Dingel? Cory was shown on TV Patrol driving/riding on a Toyota Corolla fueled with water. Yet, after a week, Dingel was advised to talk to the Central Bank Governor.

This country have been ruled by the Bankers, and not by an Elected President, eversince EDSA ’86.

I am looking for someone who is not afraid to bring the fight of the people head on. Cory did not fight for the interest of the people. And so her son.

    I am looking for a Solution-Oriented President.

    He is not it.

  86. Chiz will never join Villar.

Parasabayan et al, I don’t know where you got your information. Chiz is not joining Villar.

PSB, if you got that from Villar’s camp, it speaks a lot of the kind of disinformation that they are waging. That’s dirty politics.

But I think Kapalmuks #73 has pointed out that you interpreted wrongly Chiz’s statement.

Dapat si Noynoy ipa-interview kay Jessica Soho

  88. This one, I got from a reliable, reliable source:

Immediately after the Club Filipino presscon where Chiz announced he was leaving NPC, Jinggoy called up asking him to join his father’s ticket. Chiz said, sorry, he is not interested.

The next call came from Adel Tamano, whom we all know is now with Villar. Adel (who is a friend of Chiz because he was the spokesman of GO party in 2007) reiterated Villar’s offer to be his vice president. Chiz said, “No.”

A friend said Chiz was so appalled and hurt by the calls of these two. “Vultures”, my friend said.

  90. Like Tongue, I found the interview (at least the trascript) quite a bore. After 1 page, you’d think interviewer and interviewee had exhausted the past but it went on and on.

Never mind. I had to go through the whole boring script diligently hoping to find something interesting, something that I could reflect on, even a sound byte to titilate my bored mind but nope… there was nothing in that interview that told me that we had a president in the making.

I cut and pasted a whole raft of Q&A on my word document and dissected them but there was nothing remotely interesting or forward looking. Nope, I was not impressed.

  91. Re Chiz: I like kapalmuks’ take (- November 6, 2009 4:17 am):

I learned a lot. Thanks, kapalmuks!

  92. Villar is a shithead. He and his wife would sleep with the devil to achieve their goal.

These two are as bad as Gloria and Mike Pidal.

    Both are two-timing whores.

  93. I still could not get an idea of what NoyNoy’s agriculture platform is. All I have read so far (from the Cheche interview and Inquirer and other columns) is that Noynoy can not separate family/Hacienda Luisita from thinking about Filipino farmers and agriculture self-sufficiency and other policies. So what happens when his sisters’ interests (or his best friends or supporters’ interests) are affected by policies that benefit the majority?

  94. luzviminda luzviminda

Mabait, morally upright? Well go and run for the Papacy, not the presidency.

  96. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Q: Yung peace process. Pa’no mo ihahandle yun?

A: Yung long term, tagal ko ng dream ‘to, my original idea is cross-pollination. We bring in students from Mindanao, distribute them to the Visayas and Luzon, and you get students from Luzon and Visayas and have them educated there.

Wow. How original. Kaya nga si Salipada Pendatun graduated from UP one year (1938) before Marcos (1939).

  103. Henry,

I understand your support for Noynoy. The appalling 10 years of misgovernance in this country are enough to make any sensible person want the exact opposite of Gloria.

Your loyalty towards Noynoy does you honour. You were with the PSG and probably know more about him more than all of us combined.

Allow me this comparisson: I know Volt Gazmin very well too, I like him too – I think he’s a decent chap but believe me my loyalty to Volt is not enough incentive to even believe he is qualified to be president of the Philippines.

However, given the “quality” of candidates or the limited choices on offer, there is indeed a chance that Noynoy might win, after all, he seems to be diametrically opposed to Gloria, to Erap, to Villar, etc., a kind of young rose bud that the country needs to relieve itself of the stench. But his “winnability” will not alter the fact that in my book, he is not presidential material.

  104. You may have noticed that I’ve been quite careful in my “dissection” of Noynoy. I do not put him down in the same way I put down Villar. That’s because I sense decency in the man.

  105. After aggravating the nausea I am nursing from the flu because of trying to make head or tail of what Noynoy was talking about, I was left with one impression: he sounded like decent man, incoherent, but decent. Though, as far as my bias is concerned, he did not exhibit the kind of intellectual cohesiveness and decisive character I believe the next president needs to substantially put into motion the revolutionary changes the country is in dire need of.

If Noynoy trusts the likes of Drillon and the folks comprising the “I got my ‘piece” from the peace bond,” then I personally cannot entrust him the mantle of getting this country off this mire.

My president would be one who can sell his vision to the “big businesses,” domestic and foreign, that is a wise and moral investment to alleviate poverty through better education, better wages, better opportunities, by helping the government in dramatically curbing out the unabated corruption we now have to live with, so the government can provide better services to the majority of the people.

Electing Erap proved [to me] that our “democracy” amidst the imposed poverty and deprived of education electorate, is seriously sick; that our “democracy” needs more than just decency or glibness. And the scheming of Gloria’s cabals how to nullify the sadly wasted-by Erap “democratic will of the people” also proved [to me] that we need a person with an uncompromising vision that can galvanize the people to join, and *participate* with “the team.” At the very least, discourage those who disagree from even thinking of tripping “the team” where it is headed: a viable “democracy” where poverty is not the norm.

I cannot afford not to hold on to this hope that such a person will arise, but looking at the current list of presidential aspirants, it would be wise for me not to hold my breath 🙂

Besides, politics they say is the “art of making a compromise.”

  106. “mga pangakong napako” It’s the flu 🙂

  107. I would like a straight shooting president. Someone who will jail corrupt people.

  108. Someone who will jail Gloria and her piggy husband.

Henry: “Host: Time is up! Wala kang naisagot!

You’re right Henry. Ang labo no.

  110. Mike Mike

“Q: Yung peace process. Pa’no mo ihahandle yun?

A: Yung long term, tagal ko ng dream ‘to, my original idea is cross-pollination. We bring in students from Mindanao, distribute them to the Visayas and Luzon, and you get students from Luzon and Visayas and have them educated there.”

  111. Hahahahah! Mike, I almost fell off my seat… LOL!

@Adebrux: “I would like a straight shooting president. Someone who will jail corrupt people…. “Someone who will jail Gloria and her piggy husband.”

Noynoy: “At the end of the day, I want closure.

Dapat walang compromise, presidente ka and it’s his decision to grant or not a pardon. Duh!?

  113. Mike Mike

A candidate who will answer NO when ask if he will grant pardon to Gloria et. al. once convicted will surely get my vote. No ifs, no buts, just a simple NO.

  114. Mike Mike

Even Erap said that he might grant pardon to Gloria since he had already forgiven her. That’s BS!!!

  115. Mike Mike

What if majority of Pinoy’s tell Pres. Chiz, “sige pakawalan mo na. Kawawa naman eh”. Sadly, it is a probability since a lot of Pinoy’s have short memories. A lot have already forgotten about the late dictator’s atrocities. Bummer!

  116. florry florry

@Adebrux: “I would like a straight shooting president. Someone who will jail corrupt people…. “Someone who will jail Gloria and her piggy husband.”

Noynoy: “At the end of the day, I want closure. Yung pasensyahan na lang kung san umabot”

To be fair these two are candidates and they would not like to sound like a dictator. We are in a democratic country and let the wheel of justice turns it course. Everything should be done in accordance with the rule of law. Presidents should not interfere, influence or dictate to the Justice dept as well as the Legislative. We’ve been very critical of how Gloria prostituted and corrupted the other branches of the government to suit her whims so I think we should not be going back to her barbaric ways. We will be making a mess again instead of reforming it.

First thing that must be done however is to dismantle the moat-like protective barrier that Gloria built around her and family. Get rid of Gutierez who can not find any fault on the evil deeds of her masters. That’s only for starters and after that everything will be fine.

Chiz answer I think gives a hint of positive thinking, what he really likes; only he can not say an outright Yes. By saying that he will refer to the people, he knows and everyone knows that majority of the people want Gloria to go to jail.

Noynoy on the other hand just contented himself with a closure, pasensiyahan na lang kahit na makalibre si Gloria.

    We have a choice.

  117. tru blue tru blue

After the May 2010 elections, and whoever sits on the throne, a new dawn of corruptions breeds. It’s my prediction, 99.99 percent – take that to the bank! Xman, take note of the date and time I made this prediction.

Then again; two or three years from now, I was so wrong, the economy is going good, the new prez was otherwise, so you better thank me for a “worthless fortune telling”.

  118. tru blue tru blue

Until an execution style is imposed to any corrupt president, there will be no light at the end of the tunnel.
Macoy, his henchmen, wife and children are all enjoying their loots. Same can be said to Cory, Fidel, Erap, and Gloria’s cluster of friends and relatives.

Some of these thugs needs to be executed by firing squad or better yet, let them dance where their feet cannot find the dancefloor.

Fear needs to be instilled in this type of immoralities. Everyday the sun comes, kawawa pa rin si Juan at Marya.

Noynoy was a member of the country’s human rights committee?
Crap!, and he let those lowly farmers at Hacienda Luisita get pummeled by the PSG?

If he only did the opposite in hindsight, stepped in between the PSG and the poor farmers to show compassion, I do believe he would be a different person today.

Agree with most in here; it’s a too good to be true chatter.

I am a regular reader of this blog but this is my first time to post a comment. I read the transcript from start to finish. Like a number of you here I was dismayed by the incoherent and sloppy responses Noynoy gave to the questions. This is most apparent in the first 2 pages. He starts with one idea and frequently veers off into various other ideas tangential to the original one. Needless to say, I am worried about what this says about his mental discipline.

However, on page 3, one really gets a glimpse of his presidential agenda, priorities, and stand on various issues. I made an effort to set aside his annoying verbal tics and thought meanderings as though clearing brush, and I have to admit that his plans for running the country give me hope that here is someone willing to do what it takes to right years of GMA-instigated wrongs. (Direct quotes below)

ON WHAT HE INTENDS TO DO ABOUT CORRUPTION:

Q: Oo. Pano mo susugpuin yun?
A: Sasample ka. Yung corruption laws are there. They’re supposed to be modules of other countries. Pero yung certainty ng punishment when you commit a crime is not there. I’m told that an average six years of gestation ng bawat case. Look at the chief justice when he had this Justice on Wheels program, they went to the Bicol area, I think, Quezon also. They disposed of close to three thousand cases in two days or three days. So balik kaya dito kasi kaya eh. We have been even imagining how we’ll do it and who are the people you will task to do it no? And part of, if we’re lucky, the inauguration speech will contain a provision that will be asking for an increase in the size of the bilibid. We will also have a certainty na, yung pasensyahan na lang tayo pag kayo’y, hindi niyo kami sinersyoso, kami seryosong-seryoso sa inyo. But on the other hand, that’s the stick. We also want the carrot. Why do you make it impossible for somebody to behave, to behave properly. For instance, the president makes fifty thousand pesos per month, gross. And then the salary standardization law, it will be increased to sixty nine thousand or thereabouts. Parang big deal, no?

    Q: Masyadong mababa?
A: Parang maski sinong ilagay mo dun panong hindi matutukso? How can he sustain even if he had only one child to send to a proper school in a salary like that? So, it’s not realistic, ano? So, let’s give them all a fighting chance, so the people we’re asking to behave, na hindi yung pagpunta diyan, pasama ng pasama yung sitwasyon na to make it impossible for them. So maybe yung difference is, there will be that enforced law, but the second aspect is ano, there has to be a recognition that the carrot has long been, there’s no carrot actually. It’s coming, it should be there. Yung rewards system for instance sa attrition law, I’m told, yung parang, if you meet your goals or you surpass your goals, you’re given an x amount. Bonus. The private sector does that. If you don’t reach your goals, you’re given a reprimand and eventually, you’re terminated.

ON WHAT HIS PRESIDENCY’S PRIORITIES WILL BE:

    Q: First day?
A: First day, first week. Yung first week, I think, at the very least, yung first week, we will demonstrate the idea namin nang, pabibilisin namin yung process ng justice.

Corruption and justice
A: That has to be, otherwise all the other interventions won’t work. Look at the fertilizer scam. Yung last year we were tackling the 2009 budget, tapos yung core report on the 2007 expenditures. Ang lumabas dun, merong NGO na dalawang beses binigyan ng farm inputs, money for the farm inputs –it’s the same NGO, the same problem, according to the COA doesn’t exist, yung at least in allocation that they said. Tapos yung five hundred thousand in 2004, binigyan ng 34 million in 2007. The idea is maimbestigahan, makasuhan within one week.

Q: Bakit importante sa yo yun?
A: Para lahat will tow the line, hindi kami nagbibiro. Wag nila i-dilute, lahat itong mga intervention na ito, I said, yung magmo-monitor ka kunwari ng fertilizer input program, okay. Meron stages of growth ang plant. Namo-monitor na kagad yun eh. Para kaagad, may systems built in na pag niloko ‘to at some point in time, huli kaagad. Hindi eventually. The consciousness kasi is six years. You have to effect the changes.

    ON THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH BILL:

Q: Sige ha, Noy, isa-isahin natin ha kasi iniisa-isa namin. RH bill, ano yung stand mo dito?
A: We have doubled our population from EDSA, and yung every time na you go to a community, nandyan pa rin yung stereotype: yung nanay na may infant, may dalawang nakatangan sa palda at talagang walang trabaho yung pamilya, ganun. First focus is, parents have a responsibility to the children they’ll be bringing in. Therefore, there’s a need to plan their family, to meet the needs adequately. As to how to plan their family, the church can, well the state cannot intervene, the church, can participate in the education programs na advocacy. Pero at the end of the day, bahala yung mag-asawa sa pamilya nila. Tumulong, gumabay ang estado. I don’t advocate also yung drastic regimes like the one China, Singapore, Japan did, ano? All of those I think have gone the way, parang they’ve reversed themselves, no? Their problem now is how to increase their populations. So, I don’t agree, yung alam mo yun, it goes back to the central credit, bahala yung mag-asawa. Gabayan natin, bigyan natin, eto yung options.

Q: You will support the RH Bill?
A: To certain safeguards. For instance, may provisions nga dun sa artificial, okay? Problema ko lang dun, budget item yun. Yung budget na hindi ginagastos nawawala. Baka yung budget na nandyan, available, baka itulak, ipilit yung, yung horror stories when I was growing up was, pumunta dun consultation, paglabas dun na ligation. Yung, hindi ako papayag, dapat may actions yung ganun.

    Q: Pag sapilitan?
A: Oo. Pag may mali yung tinuturo, for instance, dahil para maipromote yung ganitong produkto, no? Another product. Yung pag nawala sila sa function nila to educate at naging advocator, whatever, medyo, you’re advocate for this or that particular instrument in artificial issue sa kin yun.

Q: But you will make, for example, pills and artificial methods available?
A: I think the state should have those. Kasi yun yung pinaka-endangered eh.

    ON THE PORK BARREL:

    Q: Pork barrel?
A: Baka ma-modify namin but we’re still undergoing the process of consulting. Basta the idea is, ayan carrot and stick. We’ll remove it, but once removing it, we’ll replace yung parang we increase the funds available to the congressman to handle the district concerns– kailangan ng tuition, kailangan ipagamot, kailangan ipalibing, etc. Yung, a congressman for instance has staff members–six. A councilor of Manila has twenty-four. Yung, ang point is, pa’no ba kung ang idea is, wag natin nada-dilute lahat ng projects, kayang gawin yun. Removing, kung hintayin niyo siya naman yun, ang kapalit nun, we need the cooperation of congress also, there has to be a way whereby their needs also are met, and the needs of the constituents are met.

Q: So you will not remove it?
A: Subject to negotiation. At the most, baka something like President Erap’s limited, specific areas.

    On EO 464:

    Q: EO 464.
A: No such thing under my term. There has to be transparency.

WILL HE PROSECUTE GMA? (I think the last sentence ‘Yung pasensyahan na lang kung san umabot’ has been misunderstood by some people here. Taken in the context of his strong stand on corruption, I believe what he means is ‘sorry na lang, GMA, kung kulungan ang kahihinatnan mo.’ When I first read this sentence, it NEVER occurred to me that Noynoy would be soft on GMA. I read it as a declaration that justice would be meted out, no one is above the law. And really, isn’t it reassuring to have a presidential candidate who is such a staunch defender of democracy that he would respect the rights even of his enemies?)

    ON PUBLIC SERVICE:

Q: Anong sagot mo dun?

    Q: Ano bang deperensya?
A: May kontrata ka sa tao eh. Lahat kayo nagsabi, “Paglilingkuran namin kayo.” Yung the people should really have a right to expect expert performance from their representatives, people that they gave this opportunity to. Yung there are others naman who’ve been with us, specifically, “What did you do here,” etc. Meron namang nagsasabi rin kung ano talaga.

ON WHETHER HE HAS ANY TREPIDATION ABOUT EMBARKING ON A PRESIDENTIAL RUN:

Q: But knowing what’s on the other side of the trench, doesn’t that make you afraid?
A: If I let myself be afraid, then baka fear would lead into inaction and to a delusion of what should be, should have and could have been already. If there’s one fear or anxiety, I use it as the main motivating factor. If we are successful in this campaign, hopefully by the time it ends we will all be able to say, “Eto’ng nagawa!” versus “Sinubukan namin ang makakakaya namin.” And lately, with all the studies that we’ve been doing and lately is like the last two weeks also, again, a lot of the problems are not that intractable. Magugulat ka na ganun yung revenues for instance, we’ve readjusted the deficit ceiling by, I think, three times already and we were supposed to have balanced budget already by now. Just by not doing anything yun, but doing what is already there.

ON THE LEGACY HE WANTS TO LEAVE AS PRESIDENT:

Q: What kind of president will you be?
A: Somebody who would be missed the day after he steps down. Yung, perhaps ano, somebody who’ll be so boring dahil everything works na, finally.

Q: That’s the kind of president you want to be?
A: That’s the drill. Umaasenso yung bayan, nagkakaroon talaga ng opportunities for everybody, baka nga–

Q: –But you have to be a ruthless, a no-nonsense president before that happens?
A: Alam naman ng mga nakakakilala sa akin gaano ako ka–nine years kong pinagtiyagaan yung budget ng AFP among others. Sabi sa kin nung panahon na yun, kasi the one, at sa congress ko pa napasa yun, no? Human rights, kinakalaban mo tong kapulisan, tong sundalong may baril.

Q: Hindi mo kayang maging ostrich.

Based on this interview, I think Noynoy: (1) has a clear sense of priorities, that is, address corruption and make the institutions of government work effectively and efficiently, (2) has the political will to reverse the degradation wrought by 9 years of wrongdoing under GMA, (3) at the same time, has a bias for consultative and participatory democracy, (4) despite what looks like slipshod thinking, appreciates the nuances and devil-in-the-details aspects of policy formulation, therefore, he will not make sweeping, impulsive decisions without first looking at the issues from all angles and perspectives.

On the other hand, without a doubt, he has a communication problem. Kris ought to read this transcript and, in his presence, critique it for clarity, coherence, and succinctness. He needs to stop saying “at this point in time” and stop starting his sentences with “yung” and ending them with “no?” Very annoying. Forget bombastic, we’ll settle for clarity. And okay, his ideas may not be earth-shaking, but really, why are we in dire straits right now? It is not for want of brilliant ideas; it is for want of the will to do the right thing. Noynoy, it seems to me, looks like a man raring to do the right thing for this country.

  123. middlemarch middlemarch

This is Noynoy’s verbatim response to the question:

Q: Si GMA ba kakasuhan mo?
A: “First of all, I want closure dun sa many issues and she seems to be either directly, peripherally involved in some of these. Having said that, my father did teach me rather that democracy’s test is your ability to defend the rights of your enemies, especially, not just of your friends. I think the last sentence ‘Yung pasensyahan na lang kung san umabot’ has been misunderstood by a few commenters. Taken in the context of his strong stand on corruption, I believe what he means is ‘sorry na lang, GMA, kung kulungan ang kahihinatnan mo.’ When I first read this sentence, it NEVER occurred to me that Noynoy would be soft on GMA. I read it as a declaration that justice would be meted out; no one is above the law. And really, isn’t it reassuring to have a presidential candidate who is such a staunch defender of democracy that he would respect the rights even of his enemies? Shouldnt this be the stand of any democracy-loving person?

Political will is not enough, the leader must also have the capacity and ability to choose the right people to help him run this country, that is what Noynoy and other “presidentiables” must endeavor to prove.

AdeBrux: “I would like a straight shooting president. Someone who will jail corrupt people.”

Let us be clear about something: when Noynoy says “pasensyahan na lang tayo pag kayo’y, hindi niyo kami sineryoso, kami seryosong-seryoso sa inyo…”, he is NOT saying his policy would be let bygones be bygones, forgive and forget. Quite the opposite, in fact. He may be vague about several things he said in this interview, but on this issue, he is crystal clear. It seems to me that tackling corruption is precisely the centerpiece of his platform. And someone who boldly says that he would make sure that a clear message will be sent on the first week of his presidency knows that we will take him up on it. First day pa lang we will demand, okay, make good on your promise.

    middmarch,

Pareho tayo ng intindi sa tinuran ni Noynoy, but i have pictured him as a softie and hindi kayang magdecision ng matatag.

Ellen: “Immediately after the Club Filipino presscon where Chiz announced he was leaving NPC, Jinggoy called up asking him to join his father’s ticket.

“Vultures”, my friend said.”

    Ellen,

Did Chiz ever say ‘Thank you’ man lang sa offer, knowing that these people obviously recognized his talent? MInsan yan ang nagiging impression sa akin the way Chiz talks. Sorry sa mga maka-Chiz pero I still have to find more aside from his not yet corrupt qualities.

Political will is not enough, the leader must also have the capacity and ability to choose the right people to help him run this country, that is what Noynoy and other “presidentiables” must endeavor to prove. -ace

    Adebrux:

I know. But my former Boss, Gen Gazmin is a soldier Mam and he is not running. I said is because basically, once a soldier, those of us who were trained so, will always be soldiers. Hell, if Ebdane is very brave to run for the prexy post inspite of Garci, I will vote for Volts who I knew to be more honorable than him if he runs for a national elective posts. We were taught that there are two kinds of loyalty. There is blind loyalty that I donot subscribe to. And there is loyalty to God, country and people. I can’t speak for other soldiers like me but I can assure you that I have faithfully lived up to the best of my ability to these 3 core values: Courage, Integrity and Loyalty. If others didnt live up to these, that’s up to them. We’re a free country. Having said that, my personal endorsement of a Noy candidacy is not something bordering on fanaticism as others here are wont to say. It is borne of a belief that HE at this time, where we are again at a crossroad of history(again bcoz we never learn!) is what we need. Whatever faults other people may have to say against him, and I respect other bloggers opinions, Noy is being looked up to by people who have grown weary of corruption, the root cause of all our problems. Is he our Savior? No! A leader can only inspire. It is the foot soldiers who do the bloody fighting! Filipinos have this twisted notion of expecting instant solutions to our national problems. His candidacy is centered on the eradication of corruption. Take note that he was always a member of the Commitee on Appropriations in both houses of Congress. He knows the budget like the palm of his hands. He knows the sources of corruption. Lest the others dont know it yet, kahit papaano, may degree in economics naman sya from Ateneo. For the others who expect him to be omniscient in all fields of governance, I have bad news for you. Walang presidenteng ganun. Ever. You remove corruption, you will have budget for everything, albeit kulang. Now, Anna, with due respect to you and the other bloggers here. Why do u think Noy was able to captivate a lot imagination of the populace in recent surveys? Cory? Maybe. And other people would say misleading ang surveys. My ass. Pag sila ang lamang, ok ang surveys. It’s the message, Anna. It’s the message. People can see through you if you are honest or not. TRUST is the operative word of the day. Thanks.

Sa tingin ko, hindi lang “thank you”. Meron pang “take care, see you later and I miss you” at kung anu-ano pa.

  131. chi chi

Hahaha! Ano ba yan? It’s a reflex for anybody, plastic or not, to say thank you for any gifts/offers made to them.

Ikaw naman, Luz, that’s so trivial compare to the new politics Chiz offers us.

  132. luzviminda luzviminda

    chi,

Yung mga simpleng bagay na ito like saying ‘thank you’ even turning down one’s offer, ay isang kagandahang ugali na itinuturo sa ating mga Pilipino. Lalo pa nga at dati na silang magkasakasama. Hindi ba dapat ay matuwa siya for the recognition? Dyan lalabas ang naturalesa ng pagkatao. Sabi mo nga GMRC-Good Manners and Right Conduct. I believe na that is to be applied in all situations.

“Sa tingin ko, hindi lang “thank you”. Meron pang “take care, see you later and I miss you” at kung anu-ano pa.

Yung “take care, see you later, at i miss you” eh hindi yata apt at Right Conduct dun sa situation.

  134. saxnviolins saxnviolins

When you want to hire an employee, whether a president, basketball player or killer, you look at his resume, and dig into his past record. No NBA team would hire a player with a poor college record just because his name is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Jr. Neither would the Mafia hire a wimp ballet dancer (anak ni Al Pacino sa Godfather 4) just because he is the son of Michael Corleone.

Now these candidates are legislators. What has been the defining thread in their legislative careers? Ano ang advocacy nila? Or did they run just because masarap matawag na Congressman, or Your Honor?

Si Loren, green advocate daw. Okay. So what bills has she authored for the environment? If not authored, has she helped another author get his bill to the floor for debates?

Pro-democracy daw si Noynoy. Okay, what has been his legislative action with regard to press freedom? Kasama ba siya sa moves for the de-criminalization of libel? What about the right of reply bill? Wasn’t it unanimously passed in the Senate?

Of course, now they will give it a positive spin saying, “yes, we listen to the people”. Chikinini niyo. A true democracy advocate would reject this outright, as a matter of principle. Lorenzo Tañada would never have signed on to the bill. Neither would Rene Saguisag, were he still in that once august hall.

So yan ang pag-usapan natin, yung nagawa na, to see if people walk their talk. Hindi yung hinihimay yung mga pangako. Kung pangako lang, kay Pascual Racuyal na ako (the guy who promised to build roads from plastic, para hindi masira). He ran in all elections, against Quezon all the way to Cory.

At the end of the day yun decision ng korte ang masusunod.

Americans usually look to the voting records of legislators running for reelection, or for the presidency.

Okay, let’s do that. Sino ang bumoto for impeachment, who voted against, and who was conveniently absent? How about the failed cha-cha of Joe D. V? Nasa House pa noon sina Noynoy and Chiz. Saang panig sila noon?

Those in the Commission on Appointments, who voted for rejection of Glue stooges, and who played safe and merely abstained?

  139. LVM, please read carefully my post on the call of Jinggoy and Adel Tamano. It was my friend who said, “Vultures”, not Chiz.

  140. Al Al

    Wish mo, Tedanz.

  141. Henry,

Appreciate your reply. At the risk of sounding patronising, let me say that I’m impressed. It’s not often we see soldiers on this blog who write with such passion (and clarity). Noynoy is lucky to have an ally in you.

Incidentally, my Volt Gazmin comparisson was the closest I could think of because after reading your post, I suddenly realised that you must have worked under him. (He is a friend and I’d like to believe he considers me a friend too.)

I have no quarrel with your man’s character — despite what I’ve said about his interview, and as I have said in a few posts here, I believe him to be a decent chap.

If decency is to be the only gualification gauge in today’s election and if we use use the process of elimination, there’s no doubt in my mind that Noynoy will be high on the list today. However, a naturally slow (or cautious) thinker that I am, I would like to hear more about him – and if possible from him. It would be extremely helpful to hear from him first hand so that we (or voters like me) can assess how solid his platform is, how determined he is or how straightforward his thoughts are.

To me, information, good, solid information which is a basis for rational decision-making is primordial. Sadly, right now, I am not seeing that quite clearly.

Re: “Why do u think Noy was able to captivate a lot imagination of the populace in recent surveys?”

May not be evident in my postings but I think I have an open mind particularly where crucial matters are concerned and don’t get easily swayed or easily influenced by what people say about or against a candidate nor am I easily swayed by the ‘mood of the moment.’

I have not made up my mind as to who I will vote for but I do know who I won’t vote for. In conjuction with that, I can promise that I will keep an open mind about Noynoy.

  142. Excellent idea, sax. Alam kong meron namang matiyaga diyang mag-research sa House an Senate. Let’s go beyond the motherhood statements/soon-to-be empty promises and go by the records.

Comparing Noynoy’s to Gibo’s bills passed, Noynoy=5, Gibo=25.

I wish we can get a tabulation of all authored bills and their individual votes for all Pres’l candidates, not just Noynoy, Gibo, or Chiz to be fair.

saxnviolins, I agree, we should look at every candidate’s (former congressmen/women and senators) legislative accomplishments and voting records. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a comprehensive record online. If someone gets hold of one, kindly do us all a favor and post.

This is all I could come up with and it does not have his voting record (although it might partly answer your question about his stand on press freedom, judicial killings, etc.).
    http://haringliwanag.pansitan.net/?p=809

saxnviolins: “So yan ang pag-usapan natin, yung nagawa na, to see if people walk their talk. Hindi yung hinihimay yung mga pangako.” I couldn’t agree more. The only reason why I painstakingly copy-pasted excerpts of the transcript is because I suspected people lost patience in wading through such a long interview that focused too much on the past and his parents’ influence on him.

People are getting frustrated by the lack of an articulation of a platform from the Aquino-Roxas ticket. I expect they are going to present it soon enough. In the meantime, from this interview we can already see glimmers of that platform. (In fairness to Chiz and Gibo, they have come out with statements here and there of elements of their platform too, better articulated than Noynoy’s, I must admit). And what is a platform if not a promise? So when Gibo says he would continue the programs and policies of GMA, you know what to expect from a Gibo presidency, right? When Legarda says she would focus her efforts on mitigating the effects of climate change, we know that is where her priorities lie. So there is merit in looking at what they promise because in there lies their analysis of what they consider as the root of our problems and how they intend to address it.

And Tongue-Twisted, how do we know if one candidate’s promise is solid and another candidate’s empty? We don’t. This is where the trustworthiness of the individual comes in. (BTW, please let us not take Noynoy’s bachelorhood at 50 against him. When Bush was president, nobody ever asked if Condoleeza Rice would be an effective Secretary of State because she is single. It was a non-issue.)

Senate Resolution No. 229 – directing the appropriate Senate committees to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation, on the circumstances leading to the arrest and ‘processing’ of journalists and media personalities after the Manila Peninsula standoff on 29 November 2007

This doesn’t exactly put him in the league of Lorenzo Tañada or Rene Saguisag. His being a democracy advocate is quite a stretch if the one shining light above is weighed against the ill effects of the right of reply bill.

We have too many people claiming the mantle of “democracy advocate”. It sullies the memory of The Old Man and Jose Burgos if the claimant is not as passionate (proven by actions) on the advocacy as these late gentlemen were.

Ang dami nilang batas na naipasa. . Why should I waste time crafting laws when we have enough already? Kung Economics ang background ko, it would serve me well na himay-himayin ang budget ng gobyerno dahil alam kong dito kalimitan ang korupsyon. Everybody serves a purpose. Si Lacson for example. This “presidential prerogative” of granting of pardon, a power that has been abused many times by Gloria should be amended, if not repealed.

“Che-Che dwelt too much on the past.” – Ellen

Che Che is pro-Noynoy. Actually she’s too soft on him. She has to dwell in the past because Noynoy knows exactly what was in the past. She didn’t ask much about the future because she also knew that Noynoy can not frame his vision for the future.

He wants to become president, but he can’t help himself get out from the shadows of his parents. The general perception is he is using them for his political end. He needs a rebranding, yan ang uso ngayon, hindi yong mga slogan na “Hindi ka Nagiisa” or “Ituloy ang laban sa mga Marcos”. Passe at old-fashion na yon. Forget the past because as somebody, an author who I can’t recall said and I quote:

“Those who live in the past are cowards and losers”

  164. luzviminda luzviminda

    Ellen,

I know that it is your friend who said the word “Vultures”, but it is this sentence – “A friend said Chiz was so appalled and hurt by the calls of these two.” – makes me question why he has felt so, after all may pinagsamahan din naman sila nuong sa Genuine Oposisyon.

  165. “You know and I know that a constitutionally elected president can not just send anybody to jail, and any president who do this is kind of dictator.”

    Florry,

I am not as bright or as intelligent as you are so my comment came out haphazardly, but rest assured, I didn’t say that to mean that sending a scoundrel to prison should be done without due process of law.

However, I would like to think that a president can[“send a corrupt member of govt to prison”]!

And why on earth can he or can’t she not? This can be done if a president does not cave in to his/her primal instint of protecting the wicked, eg., by allowing, not blocking, the wheels of justice to take its course fully and etc etc, as opposed to what is happening now.

In my book, a president’s role is to preside over the affairs of the nation, i.e., to lead, on behalf ot the people. Sending a criminal, a corrupt politician to prison is within the prerogatives of the chief executive by not interfering with the course of justice, and that’s a given.

  166. florry florry

    Anne,
Sorry, but I don’t claim to be bright and intelligent. I am just a regular and average gal.

Following is a partial repost of my entry#119. It’s not about intellect but it’s about the rule of law that should prevail at all times in a democratic society. Read on.

@Adebrux: “I would like a straight shooting president. Someone who will jail corrupt people…. “Someone who will jail Gloria and her piggy husband.”

What I am saying is no president should dictate to the other branches or else it wlll be back to the Gloria style of making a mockery of the constitution.

That’s my idea of how democracy works.

  167. chi chi

    henry,

  168. Florry, not a problem…

I share your idea of how democracy should work, but not necessarily your optimism, i.e., “That’s only for starters and after that everything will be fine.”

But heck, that’s a good start.

I don’t care about Noynoy being single at 50. Pakialam ko ba e personal niya yun. I’ll make pakialam if he wins tapos palpak sya ng palpak sa desisyon regarding his official duties in relation to the country and people.

  177. LVM:I know that it is your friend who said the word “Vultures”, but it is this sentence – “A friend said Chiz was so appalled and hurt by the calls of these two.” – makes me question why he has felt so, after all may pinagsamahan din naman sila nuong sa Genuine Oposisyon.

LVM, if you can’t fathom why he felt hurt, I fully understand why you don’t appreciate what Chiz did.

Also, please huwag gawing capital letters ang comments. Pangit basahin. Parang sumisigaw. Nakaka-turnoff.

Talk is cheap. I want to know who had done this and that in the lives of the Filipino people. Mas importante sa lahat ito.

I am just leary when someone starts to bad mouth the very same people who made them. That says something else of the candidate. I do not call that independence nor strength of character. I call him more an ingrate.

  183. Noynoy being a bachelor at 50 raises a question.
How deep is his understanding of the issues that
    Filipino parents feel?
    If some critic says that
Noynoy probably cares more about Hacienda Luisita
than he does about his own son, who can say that
the critic is wrong? How does one respond when
an anti-Noy says that Noy would not know the worries
of a parent for the future of his children and
    grandchildren?

Are you referring to Manny Villar when he railroaded the impeachment against Erap, the man who helped him become speaker of the House of Representatives (yung mga close kay Erap dito, siguro alam nyo nung dumikit na dumikit si Villar kay Erap in 1998 para lang makuha niya ang speakership against Joker Arroyo?)

@tru blue : “Wonder how he legislated those drug-related bills, being a drug lord himself.”

I just hope you can back up this claim and not hearsay. He may be a comedian turned rotten politician but being a drug lord is pure tsismis. Maybe you know something that we don’t???

    I’m echoing Florry’s comments:

Ain’t true. . . I was with the unit that apprehended the drug shipment of Tiongco. . . In fairness to him, la syang alam dun. . .

  189. Mike Mike

    Henry,

I know it isn’t true, thats why I’m asking tru blue to prove it.

  190. Mike Mike

Speaking of Tiongco, what happened to his case? Nakakulong pa rin ba?

  191. tru blue tru blue

As I’ve said before in this blog, my mentor is a retired US DEA agent assigned in Asia in the 90’s. Three people he mentioned who stuck in my head several years ago were a son of a certain Mayor Cuneta, Sotto, and a colonel in Mt Province, who got promoted to Brigadier General for protecting the marijuana plantations in that part of the world. And that’s how you advance your career sometimes, just become a thug.

    Need I say more?

  192. Thanks for that Henry.

I’d like to put in something that I know about that because I was then covering Malacanang under FVR. Mike and Henry are correct.

I don’t like Sotto and I won’t vote for him but he was not involved in drug dealing. His fault was katangahan. He had this adviser/hustler (tanga nga e) who was the one who used his name for this racket.

His being a kumpare of Tiongco was not his fault either. He was just invited to be a sponsor in a wedding. Anong malay naman niya that Tiongco was also a ninong.

That was pre-1998 election season and Sotto was leading in the vice presidential race (his president was GMA). Tito Guingona (who went on to become vp under Gloria and who is now anti-Gloria) was being groomed to be VP candidate for Lakas.

The people of FVR saw the material to destroy Sotto. They were feeding it to us.

Ang totoo lang. Sotto is no big deal as legislator but he has not been involved naman in corruption or any illegal operation.

  193. Maybe you should be specific how your mentor mentioned the name of Sotto. Did he give you details what’s the involvement of Sotto in the illegal drugs business? Or did he just mention his name as a speculation?

I have been dealing closely with PDEA people for some stories. The only thing that can be said of Sotto is publicity-conscious. Mahilig pumapel even if he had nothing to do with the operations.

  194. Mike Mike

Ok, your mentor told you that.

  195. tru blue tru blue

I’ll ask him when I get a chance, he doesn’t bs so he’s a very reliable source, even the ineptness of the PDEA and their corruptions for bungling covert operations by the
InterPol, again this was the 90’s and I can’t speak of the present, it don’t interest me one bit.

  196. henry90 henry90

True Mam Ellen.

  197. Mike Mike

Ellen, yung pakikialam ng mga legislators patungkol sa drug related crimes is like a booby trap. I remembered then Rep. Look what it lead to…

  198. Mike Mike

    Henry,

And modesty aside, magaling kaming pumiga. .

There was(is)an unwritten rule in the community. While it may not be simon-pure,i’m especially saddened by the deterioration of ISAFP with its willing participation in Putot’s vilification campaign and oppression of political enemies, it is nevertheless vigilant in its mandated task. Ask ur media friends. Many of their sources of info involving high profile shenanigans of prominent people are from the community. I’m sure Mam Ellen will not admit to anything. She’ll just give u a knowing smile. . .hehe

  208. Ah, drugs, Cuneta, Sotto, Pasay, showbiz, pulis, politika – kaya kong pagtali-taliin yan.

He was the first administrator of the then new Pasay General Hospital. He wrote out prescriptions of thousands of tablets of Valium and Mogadon to ghost patients using his hospital as a front for his drug syndicate. He also accepted ghost deliveries for hospital equipment for Pasay GH in exchange for kotong siyempre.

He is the reason the Gamboa Substation (Elaine – Sharon’s Mom who is also Tito Sotto’s sis-in-law) is not comfortable with the Originals and some more. Of course merong ngang drug lord (Gener), merong gambling lord (Boy McNutt), transpo terminal lady (Letty na parang hindi lady), merong barangay captain’s lord (Arding – the panganay of all panganays), palengke lord, traffic lord, PBA scalper lord at kung anu-ano pa. Lahat Cuneta.

Nawala na sa picture kaya ang pumalit, yung Boy Liit (City Councilor Generoso – convicted and sentenced for life in prison in 2003).

  209. Mike Mike

    Henry,
The reason I ask this is because, if it can happen to a congressman and senator, how much more to an ordinary person who have no influence at all and can’t get a decent lawyer to defend him. This is assuming that he is framed-up or being accused for a crime that he knows nothing of.

  211. tru blue tru blue

TT – do remember you’re the one who answered my question about a certain “cuneta” but can’t recall you explained about Sotto’s role at that time. Maybe my reliable source got it wrong also, that’s a long time ago. He might get suspicious why I’m digging into something so antique. Just need to do my questioning differently next time I see him.

Mike, you’re right – ma ban pa tayo dito, mahirap sa barbershop, mas maraming magagaling dun, you wonder why they’re still there, hehe….

  212. Thanks for all these info. Tito Sotto will be running for senator again. I don’t know if he will make the mistake of running under the administration ticket again but I’m sure someone will raise this issue again.

For me thats the biggest turn off for Nonoy ang mga nakapaligid na mga opurtunista sa kanya and the Conspiracy of the so so called Yellowista. May sarili ba siyang desisyon na hindi kayang implwensiyahan ng mga Yellowista na nakapaligid sa kanya, nabasa ko sa isang article na may kasunduan noon si Doy and Tita Cory na something like equal power ngunit after ata maupo sa posisyon the kasunduan ay hindi natupad because of the yellowista, tila ngaun lang nag iingay si Nonoy sa kabulukan ng C5 ni Villar, everytime kaya ay sasaluhin siya ni Mar like the question ” what is the difference between him and Gibo” to which he cant answer. But honestly if my Candidate cannot make it or win hopefully si Nonoy na lang compare to Villar and Gibo.
