It’s not just that justice delayed is justice denied. It’s also that justice selectively served is justice screwed.
At that, I don’t even know that justice, selective or not, is being served on Panfilo Lacson for the murders of Bubby Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito. Of course there’s direct evidence against him in the form of ex-Senior Supt. Cezar Mancao saying he heard him order Michael Ray Aquino to dispose of Dacer. But all that stands on the head of the pin that is Mancao’s credibility. Did Mancao truly suffer remorse during his exile in the US and felt compelled to tell what he knew a decade later, or is he just down on his luck from the same exile in the US and ready to swear that Lacson had Jose Rizal shot?
That is not something we can know under the present regime. I have no problem with Lacson being prosecuted grandly for the murders of Dacer and Corbito, and if found guilty punished grandly as well. But I have every problem with him being tried under this government. Or, since that is really a circuitous way of putting it, by this government. Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets. The justice department today has the distinction of being the one office writ large in Orwellian script, fomenting the opposite of what it says.
The only way we can really get to the bottom of this is to try Lacson under the next government. The kin of the victims have waited for justice for nine-years they can wait a few more months. That way they can be reasonably sure they’ll get justice. Or more than that, they can be reasonably sure they won’t be used for the ends of injustice.
The justice department scoffs at Lacson’s defense that the murder charges it has filed against him are just harassment, and says there’s nothing political about it. Normally I have nothing against actions that are politically motivated, and scoff as well at those who protest violently against it. What action taken by government officials and/or politicians is not politically motivated? And the pot is not wrong to call the kettle black, even if it is not the best revealer of the fact. But this is one case where the political motivation gets in the way of, well, everything, including the truth.
At the very least, it adds whole new dimensions to political motivation. It is politically motivated not just in the sense that it means to exact revenge on someone who has been relentless in exposing the rot about the First Couple—both of them in equal measure—but in the sense that it means to draw attention away from the real trial, the trial of the decade, the trial of the century, the trial that threatens to expose the true depths of the rot of this government. That is the trial of the Ampatuans.
It is no coincidence that the justice department has decided to file charges against Lacson for possible murder at the very time that Andal Ampatuan will stand trial for probable absolute mayhem. Its immediate value to government is that it competes for attention with that other trial. Particularly if Lacson’s trial is given full coverage—the trial of a senator for murder is natural front-page and prime time material, and government itself still maintains a vast propaganda apparatus—the legal overload trained at the public can, and will, diminish the shock value of the Ampatuan trial. That shock value includes the potential of the Ampatuans to croak if the noose gets tighter.
More than that, the Lacson trial is bound to provoke comparisons about murder and due process. If legal niceties, or indeed technicalities, can apply to Lacson, why can’t the same thing apply to the Ampatuans? I wouldn’t even put it past this regime to find Lacson guilty and the Ampatuans innocent, the first on the strength of Mancao’s word and the second in the absence of terrified witnesses. If it wants to provoke a public outburst, the better to scuttle the elections, that’s the way to go. This is one case where political motivation, or indeed desperation, holds truth hostage under heavier guard than the Abu Sayyaf.
In fact it’s not just that selective justice is justice screwed, it’s that selective justice is injustice pursued. I have no problems with the law making huge lapses now and then, I have a problem with the law making huge lapses all the time. That is not a lapse, that is a policy. I have no problems with Lacson being prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but I have every problem with others who need prosecuting as badly as parched earth needs rain not being remotely so.
I have a problem with Norberto Gonzales and Jovito Palparan not being haled to court for the slaughter of hundreds of activists, their complicity in it attested to by witnesses far more plentiful and credible than Mancao and indeed by an independent UN agency headed by Philip Alston. I have a problem with GMA not being hounded to the ends of the earth for the same thing. Talk of command responsibility, can any command responsibility be more responsibly commanding than the one held by the commander in chief over the conduct of her military? That is not to speak of GMA actively promoting the culture of impunity that made those murders possible. And that is not to speak of her bigger crime of the murder of democracy, or plain decency.
The only way we can get at the bottom of the Dacer-Corbito murders is to try Lacson under a new government. Look at it this way too, which is the other side of midnight, or the thesis that political motivation in this case gets in the way of truth. If Lacson is found guilty by the courts, then by the law that says that in this regime the wicked are rewarded and the good punished, we must presume Lacson innocent. And a martyr to boot. There can be no justice in this world, or government.
Either way.
Why does Justice Secretary Ricardo Blancaflor classify the murder of Dacer as “media killings”. Dacer is not a journalist. He is a PR man. A public relations person is not a journalist.

Agree with de Quiros. He’s not exactly my favourite opinion writer but what he writes is sensible.
I don’t believe that Lacson will get justice under the dwende’s regime. She’s doing this, meaning everything in her power to make sure that Lacson is bogged down by all these accusations, court cases, defence, etc. She hasn’t forgotten that it was he who exposed her husband’s shenanigans and in the process, humiliated her because Lacson exposed Vicy Toh too.
The woman has no sense of moral… She is all that is warped and ugly. Dwende na pangit pa inside out. She is dwendeng bruha. Nowhere else in the world has anyone with so little physical attributes been so gifted with such demonic instincts and psyche.
So pernicious is she that the Philippines should be thankful and should light a candle in gratitude if this ugly liliputian died tomorrow…

deQuiros is hyperventilating again. GMA’s justice department will start the ball rolling, but the next Malacanang resident’s justice department who will be providing the legal staff and energy for the finishing touches to get to the bottom of the Dacer-Corbito murders.

Dacer was dead for a long time already, kung baga e cold case ito being put into limelight to please Gloria. Wala naman yatang prescriptive period ang murder charge, korek ba ako atty sax?
Dacer and his driver should and must get justice, definitely. But it’s questionable when done in Gloria’s time, ibigay na lang sa susunod na leadership yan. Basta Gloria meron masamang motibo!
Even if the worse comes to worst for Lacson, my respect and admiration for him will not change. I’m a proud Lacson supporter!
It’s pathetic when one realizes that while we haven’t really moved forward, the world has done it radically, and we don’t even know a thing about it.

Kissinger is to me worst than Hitler. Good for him. He, the Bushes, and the Arroyos are all Servants of the Evil Vatican Empire.

The civil society took advantage of Cory’s death for their political interests and they were successful. The reason I am not in favor of Noynoy is because the ones behind him like the Hyatt 10, the Black and White movement and the Kamag-anak Inc, were the ones responsible for removing the duly elected president and installing the worst president, GMA.
And now they have the guts to again re-take Malacanang.

The truth is National Security Council members include former presidents and although term used is “invited to attend”, they are Constitutionally allowed to sit in meetings of the NSC.

Ramos competence or not in the matter is neither here nor there…NSC members include former presidents, competenet or not. Cory became competent because she became president… Even if for the sake of argument, she didn’t have the national security competence, she would have attended NSC meetings as a former president because our Constitution allows her to sit in NSC meetings. Don’t know if she attended NSC meetings regularly though.
In other words, Erap should be entitled to the same privilege.
(Now, as to why he accepted to attend this time is another matter…)
“Invited to attend” may be the wording but it is SOP to “invite” former presidents to attend… The wording is merely a form of courtesy.
Erap didn’t attend the previous NSC meetings before because he is under house arrest in Tanay, remember? 🙂
Many ask why Erap accepted the invite? Well, even if he has the best of intention in accepting the invite, it doesn’t look good on him since almost everyone in this country doesn’t like Gloria and everything she does or say are met with skepticism. I agree with Chi; “Erap, talo ka naman dyan! Palagi kang naiisahan ni Goyang!” Di pa rin nagbabago si Erap. Uto-uto pa rin. 😛
Ramos cannot be depended on national security issues. It is during his tenure that kidnapping (for ransom) is at all time high, until Erap was appointed crime czar and Lacson at the helm of PAOCTF. Na insecure si tabako kay Erap noon dahil daming bumilib sa kanilang dalawa ni Lacson.
As to the insurgency issue during Ramos’ time, he played lovey-dovey with the rebels and puro peace-talk lang ng peace-talk. Si Erap ginyera ang mga Muslim rebels at lahat ng kampo nila nabawi.

Sorry po, but I’ve to disagree. Giyerahin ang mga rebelde lang ang solusyon diyan. Ilang taon na at ilang kasunduan na ang nagdaan at naganap sa pagitan ng gobyerno at ng mga rebelde, may nagyari bang kaayusan? Wala po. Maraming generals ang gustong palaging may bakbakan sa Mindanao at sa mga lugar ng mga NPA dahil maraming raket diyan. Lahat ng armas, bala, etc.. ay napupunta sa mga kamay ng mga rebelde at sino sa palagay mo ang kumikita ng limpak limpak na salapi? Di po ba yung mga heneral? Itanong niyo kay Gen. Garcia, yung dating comptroller ng AFP na nakakulong ngayon. Diba yan din ang nirereklamo nila Trillanes nuon kaya sila nag OAkwood noon? Baka nga may kickback din si tabako kaya ayaw niyang matapos ang gyera sa MIndanao.
