Aquino, Villar statistically tied in latest Pulse Asia survey

Statement of Sen. Benigno Aquino III on the Pulse Asia survey results in the comments section.

With about four months to go before the May 10, 2010 elections, presidential candidates Senator Benigno “Noynoy” C. Aquino (Liberal Party) and Senator Manuel “Manny” B. Villar (Nacionalista Party) are tied for the presidency, with Senator Aquino registering 37% of voter preferences and Senator Villar 35%, the latest Pulse Asia survey showed.

The nationwide survey conducted Jan. 22 to 26, among 1,800 respondents has a margin of error of +/-2%.

The only other presidential candidate with a double-digit preference is former President Joseph Estrada (Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino) at 12%.

The other candidates register voter preferences of at most 5%. Less than one in ten Filipinos (6%) does not have a preferred presidential candidate at this time.

Across areas, Senator Aquino takes the lead in the National Capital Region, with 38% support against Senator Villar’s 24%. The two front-runners register virtually the same preference in Balance Luzon (Aquino, 37%; Villar, 36%); Visayas (Aquino, 41%; Villar, 38%); and, Mindanao (Villar, 36%; Aquino, 33%).

Across socio-demographic groups and taking the error margins for the subgroups into account, Senator Aquino leads among Class D (40%) and among the elderly aged 65 years and over (42%). On the other hand, Senator Villar enjoys the lead in the 25-34 age group (42%). Voter preferences for the two leading candidates are essentially the same across the other socioeconomic classes and age groups.

Compared to the December 2009 survey, support for Senator Villar improves by 12 percentage points, while preference for Senator Aquino and former President Estrada decline by 8 and 7 percentage points, respectively. Voter preferences for the other presidential candidates, on the other hand, do not register marked changes between the two survey periods.

Voters are as likely to say, based on a predetermined set of reasons to choose from, that they opted for a candidate because he/she is not corrupt or has a clean record (24%) as, he/she cares for the poor (24%). Other reasons cited for preferring a candidate pertain to the ability to do something (16%), helping others (11%), being a good person (9%) and experience in governance (6%)

Senator Roxas leads the vice-presidential race

Nearly half of the voters (47%) would vote for Senator Manuel “Mar” A. Roxas (Liberal Party) if the May 2010 elections were held at the time of the survey, giving him a sizeable lead over Senator Loren Legarda (Nacionalista Party, at 28%) in second place and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay (PDP Laban, at 13%) in third place. The other vice-presidential candidates garner at most 2% voter preference. Meanwhile, about one in ten voters (7%) did not have a favored vice-presidential candidate at the time of the survey.

Across geographical areas, Senator Roxas leads the race in Luzon, including NCR, and the Visayas. However, voter preferences for the two leading contenders, Senators Roxas and Legarda, are essentially tied across the Mindanao areas surveyed. As for the socio-demographic groupings, Senator Roxas enjoys sizeable leads among the upper socio-economic classes ABC (54%) and D (49%) and across the various age groups. Preferences for Senators Roxas and Legarda are essentially tied among Class E voters, however.

Among the vice-presidential candidates, only Senator Roxas and Senator Legarda register significant movements in voter preference between Pulse’s December 2009 and January 2010 surveys – an increase of 8 percentage points in the case of Senator Roxas and a decline 9 percentage points in the case of Senator Legarda.

Hehehehe. . .nagkagulo na. . . . .

This will show us all..what Money can do! Hindi bale gumastos si Money Villar sa ngayon..for him it is simply an investment..mababawi rin niya ang kanyang puhanan..many times over…!kung ngayon nga lang ipinakita na niya ang kanyang tunay na pagkatao..ano pa kaya pag siya ay pangulo. …may himala kaya? may pagbabago kaya? gaganda kaya ang ating bukas? it all remains to be seen..May the best man wins..

  3. KAIR KAIR

Kainis, halata namang bayad.

  5. i simply think Villar will do everything to sway the votes towards him. wala naman kasing ibang napapag-usapan kundi si Noynoy at si Gibo. so one way of probably getting attention and to make it look that he is the underdog, kailangan palitawin na tumataas siya sa surveys. and then make it appear na kaya siya pinag-iinitan sa kung anu-anong mga kaso eh dahil sa pagtaas ng kanyang ratings. just wondering, magkano na kaya ang nagagastos niya? to think na hindi pa talaga nag-start ang official campaign period.

i could only hope hindi madagdagan ang utang ng bawat Pilipino, isinilang man or hindi pa.

The Pulse Asia survey was conducted on Jan. 22-26th. It takes time for news to sink in.

Enrile’s report regarding Villar’s C-5 diversion and insertion hit the headlines on Jan. 25th. The Pulse Asia survey was almost over already by that time.

If another survey is conducted today or a week from now, I think Villar’s ratings would go down.

Still, Noynoy has to come up with more effective ads than Villar. The battle has definitely narrowed to these two contenders.

  7. Rudolfo Rudolfo

another, Hello-Garci ( baka Hello-Melo or Hello-Automation ).halatang-halata ang deal nina GMA-Villar behind the scene. May Agimat saka paka Panday yata ).

According to our info, 2.1B na nagagastos ni Villar. Di pa nagsisimula campaign period niyan ah +.+

  11. Statement of Sen.Noynoy Aquino:

    1. I am not surprised with this turn of events. First, our opponents have had a long head start in this campaign. And while I diligently perform my functions as a legislator, the others are practically campaigning fulltime, neglecting their mandate with those who entrusted them with their votes. Second, for all the unprecedented and sustained ads spending in all forms of media of the other camp and the unrelenting and increasingly below-the-belt and baseless black propaganda against me by my opponents, not to mention the harassment we have been continuously getting from this administration—the arbitrary transfers and replacement of police directors, the inexplicably adverse rulings we have been getting from Comelec for our local executives, the abrupt cessation of government projects in provinces friendly to us and lately even the denial of venues for our rally sites– I am surprised that I am still on top of the surveys.

    2. By the day, it is becoming clear that an unholy alliance is developing between this administration and my opponent. No wonder the Palace spokesman couldn’t restrain himself in expressing his gratitude to one of my opponents for keeping quiet on the many issues confronting this administration.

    3. Of course, that is not to say that we do not face challenges in the campaign. Quite a lot, I must say, foremost of which is the ability to bring our message—a clean, decent, transparent and accountable government will put an end to massive corruption, dedicate precious public resources to basic services for the poor and alleviate our people’s hopelessness and poverty—across to as many of our people as possible. It is a strong and relevant message that we are certain has had and will continue to have traction among more and more of our voters. We have been able to address this. In the coming days, we will be able to do this with greater frequency and in a sustained manner through ads.

    4. On top of this, I believe that our comparative advantage—the organizational strength coming from our ability to mobilize volunteers all over the country—still has to make itself felt in the campaign. We expect that to happen as we formally start the campaign this February, the historic People Power month.

    5. I have been through this before. When I first ran for office as a Congressman in 1998, I faced eight opponents and initially attracted about two-thirds of the votes. After the eight ganged up on me, throwing everything they could at me, my numbers fell to half of what I started with. But since the issues they threw at me did not stick and since I brought a message of change and hope, in the end, I prevailed with plenty to spare.

    6. What should not escape all of us is that I still lead the surveys—from the time I declared my candidacy to this day. I would like to assure everyone, especially our supporters, that as the formal campaign period starts, we will work harder to make sure that we remain on top of the fight and the hope of our people for a clean, competent and compassionate government through my tandem with Senator Mar Roxas will be fulfilled.

  12. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

The senator allies of Senator C-5 did not attend the last day of the Senate sessions today. Result – no quorum. Result – no decision made on the resolution to censure Villar.

The wily one has escaped the verdict.

  13. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Villar accuses his non-allies as just playing politics. Their non-attendance today is not playing politics?

  14. martina martina

    Unbelievable!

  15. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Martina, I think it’s because the two surveys were completed on the day before or just after the Enrile Report came out.

So there was not enough time yet for the issue to spread, to be discussed and digested by the public.

And Villar’s ads are more frequent and quite effective. His endorsers are heavyweights, too. He can do that with his billions. And I’m sure with Gloria’s, too.

  16. Ang laki ang ibinagsak ni NoyNoy. Tingnan ninyo ang detalya ng surveys. Classes D/E have begun moving away from NoyNoy. Tapos na talaga ang pakikiramay.

  17. martina martina

Thanks Phil, ganoon pala.

  18. martina martina

  19. chi chi

    Saan tayo patutungo nito!

Approve! One has to make do with whatever “hardware” one has got. If Villar is using heavyweight entertainers to lure credulous Pinoy voters to his side, Noynoy and Roxas should give marching orders to their respective heavyweight showbiz relatives to join the political scrum.

(If that’s the only way to beat Villar, I suggest that they hire Erap and Jinggoy too to perform cinematic poses on stage for them!)

  32. Here’s a sampling of a cinematic pose that Erap can don on stage to boost masa attendance at Noynoy’s campaign gigs (Courtesy of Hot Manila. By the way, check out the film flyer! Simply gorgeous!)

    […]
Well, the answer’s in. Hundreds of murders, billions of pesos in kickbacks, bribes and corrupt deals, innumerable abuses of authority and several constitutional hijack attempts, coup plots and bomb explosions later, it’s clear the estate isn’t just close to collapse, it’s also on fire. Whatever hopes people might have had after Edsa 2 have long gone — swept away by the gale force winds of unrestrained traditional politics, the Filipino patronage system which exercises power and uses public funds for the benefit of one’s family, friends and province mates. To top it all off, now we have the sight of the two main antagonists apparently kissing, making up and cutting a deal. […]
