Mar Roxas is my choice for vice president

My vice president
My vice president
Before the death of President Corazon Aquino changed the political landscape, I was mulling between Mar Roxas and Chiz Escudero for president.

Mar Roxas helped me make my decision when he slid down to the vice presidency in response to the overwhelming sentiment for Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to lead the crusade to end Gloria Arroyo’s hold on power. It was an unselfish act and I admired him for that.

My line-up was Chiz-Mar.

Then Chiz withdrew from the presidential race. I’m not excited with any of the presidential candidates. On Monday, I’ll probably leave the section for president blank or vote for one of those who have shown leadership but I know has no chance of winning.

For vice-president, I’ll go for Mar Roxas. I’ve asked friends to vote for him especially now that Makati mayor Jojo Binay is closing in.

Mar ties with Binay in May 2-3 SWS survey

Makati City Mayor Jejomar “Jojo” Binay has tied erstwhile vice-presidential front runner Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas in the May 2-3 survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) sponsored by BusinessWorld.

The survey, which will appear in BusinessWorld on Friday, showed Binay jump 12-percentage points from 25% in April 16-19 to 37% in May 2-3.

Support for Roxas fell by 2-percentage points from 39% in April 16-19 to 37% in May 2-3.

The latest survey also showed Sen. Loren Legarda falling further behind with 12% support in May 2-3, down from 24% in April 16-19.

Marital infidelity no impact?

A source in the camp of Binay, the running mate of former President Joseph Estrada, said the latest survey showed that the issue about Binay’s marital infidelity had no impact on the mayor’s ratings.

Binay admitted his marital infidelity on April 30, or 2 to 3 days before the latest survey was undertaken. (Click here for story on Binay’s admission.)

“The girlfriend issue is a non-issue,” the source said.

The source said the endorsement by former presidential 2010 wannabe Francis “Chiz” Escudero also played a role in the rise of Binay’s ratings.

Escudero’s endorsement of Binay came out strongly in various television and radio ads prior to the survey period.

Dramatic rise

Binay’s survey ratings have climbed dramatically towards the end of the 90-day national campaign period, which started in February.

Binay’s rating was 17% (3rd place) in the Feburary 24-28 SWS survey, 21% (3rd place) in March 19-22, 25% (tied for 3rd with Legarda) in April 16-19.

The SWS survey results mirror Pulse Asia’s latest vice-presidential survey.

In the Pulse Asia survey conducted April 23-25, Roxas fell to 37% (from 43% in March) while Binay overtook Legarda with a 9-percentage point leap.

One thing going for Roxas, however, is the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s (INC) endorsement of the Liberal Party tandem disclosed on Wednesday.

The INC, which practices bloc voting, could bring around 2 million votes for the LP vice-presidential bet.

The latest SWS survey had 2,400 survey respondents.

  1. I think he’s a good choice. My vote also went to him.

If I voted for Aquino, it was actually to vote against Villar, but must admit, I voted for Roxas.

  2. My method of voting was like voting in a “run-off election”.

    Mar for VP!

When I was having a big problem regarding my nephew’s condition, ONLY ONE heeded to my plea from among OUR BENEVOLENT senators – MAR ROXAS! And there was not even a hint of his candidacy during that time.

‘Yung ibang sobrang dakdak at gagaling sa harap ng mikropono – wala, nada, bokya!

Kahit saan makarating, MAR ROXAS PA RIN!

He does not even know me.

  4. the latest survey showed that the issue about Binay’s marital infidelity had no impact on the mayor’s ratings.

It’s consistent with how marital infidelity is looked at in Pinas, i.e., with the greatest tolerance, as if society generally condones it. Erap got elected to the highest position despite marital infidelity so not surprising that it didn’t even cause people to stop and listen to the exposé about Binay’s own disposition vis-a-vis the institution of marriage.

  5. Pasensya na muna ang photo. I can’t reduce it. I’ll look for other photos later. I’m finishing my column for Malaya.

    Ellen,

You may not find sincerity in his smile but there lies pure benevolence in his heart.

  7. Ellen,

Agree with Magno…

  9. Thanks. Won’t change it anymore.

Mar ties with Binay in May 2-3 SWS survey.

Now I get it why Noynoy issued releases dropping Binay saying he no longer believes he shares vision with the Makati mayor. Wow! I’m impressed with Binay’s rise catching up with Mar only in a matter of (two?) weeks.

Told ya, Mags…there is cause to worry. But with INC’s endorsement, panalo pa rin ang better half ni ate Koring.

  15. “…the issue about Binay’s marital infidelity had no impact on the mayor’s ratings.” – Ellen

  16. Lurker Lurker

Looking at Noynoy’s and Mar’s lineage, I can’t help but wonder: does pedigree count in predicting a leader’s character/performance/competence?

  17. kapatid kapatid

Good size na iyung photo. I agree, when Mar stepped down due to the clamor for Noy to step in, he already got my vote. He was one of the first people who offered his help during our crisis…ohhh, we still are in a crisis.

  18. sychitpin sychitpin

my fearless forecast is that Noynoy will win by a landslide for president, while Mar as vice president ,,,,,,, advance congratulations to Pres Noynoy and VP Mar!

  19. saxnviolins saxnviolins

    You want pedigree Lurker?

    I’ll give you three:

    1. Abe Lincoln – very little formal education.

    2. Harry Truman – did not finish college. Former haberdasher – one who does the fitting in a tailor shop for men. Manlililip yata ang Tagalog.

    3. Deng Xiao Ping.

Now about guys with pedigree, there is:

    1. George W. Bush Jr.
    2. Ferdinand Marcos
    3. Gloria Arroyo

  20. Walang kwentang issue yang marital infidelity sa Pinas. — Tongue

Hahahah!

    And I agree — I voted for Erap in 1998. 🙂

  21. If his missus accepts it, difficult to make it an issue.

  22. Lurker Lurker

Sax, I asked a question, rather, just voiced something that crossed my mind. I am not saying that I want a pedigreed leader.

BTW, I’m sure there are many others who are good leaders and are pedigreed, than those at the top of your head.

I know that in the Philippines, the pedigreedy abound.

  23. Actually, I’m disappointed with what Chiz did, joining Noynoy’s campaign but created intrigues with his own “Noy-Bi” ticket.

    http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/nation/view/20100408-262981/Trouble-rocks-LP-camp

Also, while Noynoy pledges in his ads that Mar is his only VP, he allowed Chiz to do it because Chiz team actually saved his presidential campaign.

It was the Chiz team together with Serge Osmeña who turned his campaign around. Remember last February his campaign was on the decline and Villar’s was going up. They were already statistically tied.

That was when Osmeña and Chiz team came into Aquino’s campaign. That was when Villaroyo was pushed plus other anomalies that really damaged Villar.

The collateral damage in that setup was Mar.

  24. Ellen,

In the old Liberal Party (60s?), wasn’t Ferdi Marcos a member and then switched to Nationalista Party? Also, Macapagal the father was a Liberal Party man too, wasn’t he? Why did daughter Gloria join another party?

  25. chi chi

#24 Ellen. Talaga! Nahabol tuloy si Mar. Ngayon, Noynoy is clearing all up daw.

  26. Anna:Why did daughter Gloria join another party?

Because in 1992 when she decided to run for senator, the Liberal Party (under Jovito Salonga)was not strong. That was the time of Mitra and Angara’s Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP).

I remember way back in 1992, when everybody was leaving Salonga’s LP for LDP, I saw Arroyo (she had not jumped to LDP yet) and I told her I admired her for sticking it out with LP, her father’s party.

    She just smiled. Didn’t comment.

After a few days, it was announced that she left LP.

Arroyo was formerly the protege of Angara. But in 1998, Arroyo bolted from LDP when she realized that she could not launch her presidential bid with Angara also lusting for the presidency. She formed KAMPI with Tito Sotto and Peping Cojuangco.

  27. Continuation of #24:

But I think Chiz is the best person to be Senate President during this crucial period in our democracy.

He would not think of changing the constitution if he presides over the country as acting president if no winner of the may 10 elections would be declared because he has his eye in the 2016 elections.

The Noy-Bi ticket, of course, is connected to the 2016 elections.

    What a disappointment!

  28. chi chi

#24 Ellen. Na-minus nga si Chiz sa akin dyan. Pero mas pinabilib ako ni Mar kasi when he logged a protest on the Noy-Bi and Noynoy said he shares vision naman with Binay, etc., Mar just kept his silence and went on toeing the line of his team mate whose action of tolerating two VPs is selfish to me.

  29. chi chi

I agree with you, Ellen, that Chiz is still the best to be senate pres at this crucial time.

Yeah, halatado si Chiz sa Noy-Bi. 2016 is so far away, dami pang mangyayari.

  30. Hey! Yung kumare mo Anna, si Loida Nicolas-Lewis has just confirmed the scenario of my friend, yung Mamang Tindero ng Tinapa.

  33. Larga na ang ticket noon ng KAMPI with GMA and Tito Sotto. Marami nang provincial sorties ang kanilang ginawa announcing their tandem for 1998. With Peping Cojuangco behind, it means Coryistas were not far behind.

    Ellen:

Chiz Escudero? You’d vote for Chiz Escudero for President had he pushed through with his Presidential bid?

This is what I can say. When he was earlier already sounding off his desire to run for President, he gave a talk to our business organization. (I’ll pass for now to mention which group this was.) Before giving the talk, he gave a private audience to us, the board, and the officers of the org.

This is my personal take on him: he’s a big disappointment. I would not vote for him — ever!

  41. japino japino

Just as a follow-up — he has already showed his shrewdness with the NOY-BI issue. He’s already showing his long-term plans for 2016. He’s so young, and already so much a TRAPO. No to Chiz Escudero as Senate President. No to Chiz Escudero as President!

  42. florry florry

    History repeating itself?

Doy Laurel’s plans for the presidency gave way to Cory in 1986, because Ninoy was killed and she has the best chance to win, and they “won” daw.

Mar Roxas’ long-prepared candidacy for the presidency gave way to Noynoy because Cory died and he also has the best chance to win (because of the death)and probably will win according to surveys.

In both cases, the ill-prepared mother and son were just accidental candidates prevailed upon by vested interest groups and force Laurel and Roxas to give way because of deaths in the family. The main reason was not about qualification and readiness to lead but to capitalize on sympathy to gain power.

Inspite of the “sacrifice” of Laurel Cory destroyed his political career treated him an outsider and even called him a “Langaw”. Laurel took oath of office in the morning, in the afternoon he was no longer a vice pres. The position was gone.

I hope Roxas will not experience the same treatment from Noynoy as Laurel under Cory.

If that happens the similarities of mother and son’s history will part ways and ends in a different way.

  43. luzviminda luzviminda

    Florry,
You’re so correct on that. Malay natin baka blessing in disguise din ang pag-slide down to VP ni Mar.

  44. luzviminda luzviminda

Baka si Koring eh mag-ERAP-MAR! Hehehe!

  45. I still believe that if one believes that Perlas is the best candidate, then one should not leave blank the presidential “vote-choice”. Reasoning is simple. Pound the message into the Llamado that over 55% of the population think poorly of his leadership skills, and he should work harder and educate himself more in the matters of governance.

Or… vote Gibo, instead! Or, vote Gordon if you don’t like Gibo.

“It was like the (1986) revolution,” del Rosario said, after watching yellow confetti rain down on Aquino, vice presidential running mate Sen. Mar Roxas and their senatorial candidates on a stage. Yellow was also the color used by Corazon Aquino and her supporters.

“But the issue now is no longer Marcos,” del Rosario said. “It’s fighting corruption and helping the poor get work, houses, jobs and medicine.”

Asked why he picked Aquino, del Rosario replied, “He’ll be like his parents. He won’t become a pest to society.”

Here’s sound advice from former senator Rene Saguisag

“A final appeal to the Moist-Eyes Club: voting for a good bet with no chance is debatable. He withdraws, a bad bet wins. He runs, and takes away enough votes from the baddie to enable a worse one to win. We are taught to avoid a greater evil. No frying pan into the fire again. “

  53. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

If Noynoy wins and Binay wins, Noynoy will have to start his anti-corruption campaign on the man who will sit right next to him.

Ask Teddy Boy Locsin why his TV ads endorsing Mar carries a subtle headline in the background “Binay,Spouse Charged with Plunder”..or words to that effect.

Remember that Teddy Boy and Binay were Cory boys in her Cabinet and both are Makati politicians.

Does Teddy Boy know something he isn’t telling us yet?

  54. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Mar and most everybody else just completely forgot about Binay. The focus was on Villar and Loren. Nobody ever expected there would be a Brutus thrust.

And while everybody else’s attention was elsewhere, Chiz plunged the dagger deep into Mar’s back with presumably Binay’s budget for TV spots worth millions.

Chiz didn’t really have to do it. But he did. And for selfish personal long term 2016 reasons. He destroyed a good anti-corruption tandem. Tsk, tsk…

  55. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Accordng to the article, Nyoynyoy si lazy daw, I believe that. 62. From Jess Balingit:

I cannot blame you for having Mar as your man for VP. As most women use their heart most of the time than their mind. Unselfishness?

    Think again Ma’am.

Mar Roxas has an sensitive anticipation of what will be of Noynoy few month, if winning the presidency is already in the bag as claimed by Yellow Army.

For sure, Noynoy mental condition will be in question. And for that he will be declared mentally incapacitated to govern. Mar knows this well to happen, if ever Noynoy wins hence, his “pagpaparaya” came about.

As you can see, there are four NOs in benigNO NOyNOy aquiNO. Enought proof of this man’s negativism or disagreeable mood. It shows how he keeps hatred in his heart which will cause cracks in his so fragile mind.

    I sympathize with you.

    May God bless you always.

  63. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

To Jess Balingit… such a profound discourse.

  64. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Note Binay’s TV ads. “Kay Binay, gaganda ang buhay.” Huh?

I thought the Vice-President was just a spare tire. Binay is the only vice-presidential candidate who thinks that if our lives improve, it is to be credited to the vice-president.

  65. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

That TV ad sounds like a Presidentiable’s ad… Erap, inaagaw na ang lines mo. Okay ka lang diyan?

  66. florry florry

Chiz put a wedge on Noynoy-Mar team, but Noynoy didn’t exert any effort to straighten things up, instead he arrogantly took the side of Chiz when Mar tried to do something about it. It only shows that Noynoy trusts Chiz than Mar his VP who sacrificed for the sake of the country and gave way to him. It seemed there’s a tint of the Cory-Doy relationship.

I still think that this has something to do with the late night visit of Noynoy to Chiz where they hatched a plan for 2010 for Noynoy and 2016 for him. Roxas was completely out of the radar of Noynoy. So expect Noynoy to be supporting Chiz instead of Mar in 2016.

The vice presidency is no longer a sure thing for Roxas, thanks to Chiz. He made a great difference at the expense of Roxas, and this has something to do with 2016. Chiz knows that Roxas will be his strongest rival in 2016 and if Roxas losses this race, he would be a non-factor in the next presidential election. It’s all in the planning and execution.

Chiz is a disappointment. He losses some luster politically. It should have been better if he didn’t enter into the fray and stayed neutral. Now he exposed himself as another trapo and worked only for his self-interest.

Sayang, his new politics and independence when he quit his party turned out to be just another political gimmickery.

  67. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

This election campaign period has further crystallized the characters of the people running for President and Vice-President.. including those who intend to do so in the next elections.

Most revealing are the characters of Manny Villar, Binay and Dick Gordon, including Chiz Escudero.

  68. Lurker Lurker

I think that Chiz will suffer politically from this. In Filipino, he is is “taksil”. Many people have been turned off by his seeming support of the Noy-Mar tandem, only to do what he did at the homestretch.

  69. Spot on, florry.

Danding is done with Chiz, and I just got word tonight that Chiz and his father Sonny’s last-ditch effort to save Chiz’ candidacy was also rejected by Lucio Tan earlier. (Dr. Sonny Escudero worked for Lucio Tan’s farms before joining Marcos’ cabinet.) With no other political financier in sight, he may be counting on Noynoy, whom Chiz thinks will win next week’s polls, to sponsor his candidacy in 2016. Hence the junking of Roxas. And of his Ninong Erap, too! Well, he can keep his “independence”. As if we even care.

At the same time, he throws a monkey wrench in the Liberal Party machinery. That leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

    Another one bites the dust.

  70. Fiipinos have short memories…what doesn’t taste good right now may be sweet a couple of years from now. More so because we have a bad habit of hating the incumbent after the honeymoon stage…

  71. As most women use their heart most of the time than their mind.

    Heheheh!

By most, the writer must mean majority of women at the very least (or family is all women and tend to do it that way — heart before mind.) That’s a bit of an overstatement but heck, not a problem for me because some men have a tendency to do the same (think with what’s between their legs rather than with their brain and if they can’t do it that way, they think with their biceps)…
