Primed for shocker SONA

President Aquino promises a shocker in his first state of the nation address tomorrow.

Two of my Facebook friends can’t wait for it.

Reyna Elena said, ” I will watch, I will listen and will prepare to be shocked. This could be the day that he will reveal the real story behind the Kris Aquino and James Yap break-up.”

That is also what musician Dennis Garcia would be waiting for. He said, “If PNoy switches on the creative side of his brain full blast, he can make his SONA a rousing success… for starters… PNoy should reveal the real reason for the break-up of Kris & James.”

Reyna Elena, who is based in the United States and actively campaigned online for Aquino, said “While I support the President, I’m tired of listening how the Arroyo’s ransacked the national coffers. Really. As I have said, that’s really not shocking. They should be slammed to jail. Sell their stolen assets. Collect back the monies. “

He would like to see P-Noy build decent expressway, from Manila all the way to his town in Matnog, Sorsogon. “I ’m sick and tired of this photo-op elevated highway, corruptly ending in Alabang,” he said.

Social Watch Philippines has their own expectations from P-Noy’s SONA. Former national Treasurer Leonor Briones is worried that Aquino has announced that there will be austerity measures. “Let there be austerity in foreign trips, overpriced projects and overlapping programs. But there should be more spending for education, health, agriculture and the environment,” she said.

Briones said, “P-Noy, in his SONA, should promise not to sacrifice social development for deficit reduction. There are still untapped resources of revenue such as the perks, exemptions and benefits granted by Congress to the private sector and income of government-owned and controlled corporations. All that is needed is P-Noy’s political will and commitment.”

Isagani Serrano, President of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement said, “The magnitude of poor Filipinos is staggering. There would still be millions of hungry people here even if we achieve the target of halving the proportion of hungry people by 2015. Ending poverty of half of the 27.6 million poor Filipinos will still leave us with millions who are still hungry and neglected.”

“Those who will be left behind are the most vulnerable Filipinos such as indigenous peoples, women, small farmers and fishers. They are those living in the poorest towns which are mostly in Mindanao,” he said.

Lasconia Enoch, chairman of the Mamata, Malumdeni, Makilala Tribal Association, based in North Cotabato, said that government’s big projects for social development do not usually reach the Indigenous Peoples’ communities. “We hope that P-Noy would talk of genuine empowerment for IPs in his first SONA. We IPs have always felt that we are invisible to the eyes of the national government — often not consulted and sidelined in matters of setting priorities and governance,” he said.

Rebecca Batil, treasurer of the Mamata tribe association, said that P-Noy could prove that he is pro-poor by talking of budget for IPs during his SONA.

Manuel R. Badon, chapter president of the Unity for the Advancement of Sustainable Development and Good Governance (USWAG) in Baao, Camarines Sur, said that P-Noy should take the SONA as an opportunity to command local governments to institutionalize people’s participation in governance. “We are more than willing to help the President ensure that his programs reach the poorest of the poor by serving as watchdogs of government projects in our community simply because we do not want to be left behind.”

In Negros Oriental, Siliman University history professor Renante Lingkong said that one key strategy is for President Aquino to change priorities for education. “It should be quality of education and teachers’ training above infrastructures.”

Briones said ““Our bottomline is those at the bottom. These are millions of absolutely poor and absolutely hungry Filipinos who will be left behind even if we achieve the development targets as embodied in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).”

She said P-Noy should ensure “that no Pinoy will be left behind by the P-Noy administration’s poverty eradication efforts.”

MDGs refer to the set of time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty by 2015. This includes addressing income poverty, hunger, disease and exclusion while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability.

Briones said P-Noy’s regime will have to ensure that the country achieves the MDGs within the next five years up to the 2015 deadline.

  2. Loved it Tita Ellen, lumapad na naman ang tenga ko, but pramis, I won’t ask any botoks from Belo.

But like what I told Inday Espina-Varona, PNoy must learn from Obama, whose popularity ratings is now just a whisper close to the ground. People here don’t remember the past and they don’t care if it was Bush who messed up everything. What people here know is that, Obama’s supposed to fix it. And while this might be America, and that is the Philippines, our stomachs are all the same.

SONA SONA SONA…Everyone is waiting! I just hope before this government of Aquino, whom I supported, ask people for more sacrifices, they should make sure they’ll do their end of the bargain, i.e. clean the government and send those criminals in government to jail! People did not vote for pnoy for nothing but for CHANGE!

  4. MPR, Briones was the national treasurer during Erap’s presidency.

    Salamat ng maraming thanks, Ellen.

Still the same.

the issues of anomalies of the last administration are better dealt by the Justice System (Police, State prosecutors and the Courts) and let the new government deals with the issues of Governance. The President may give an order and issue EO to the effect and leave the rest to the men and women mandated to do so. I believe that should be the Process.

I hope the SONA will focus on where and what direction Noynoy plans to lead this country, not on the failures or sins of the past. Nothing will be gained; its purpose is only to serve as guidance to the present, unless it’s aimed to lay the basis for future blame and failure in governance.

Gloria and company messed up every fiber of Philippine society and people were all aware of that. Noynoy then voluntarily presented himself to fix it, and despite not so impressive credentials, people accepted the challenge and they gave him the mandate.

The people did not ask anything then from Noynoy, nevertheless he made several promises in his own terms and words. It didn’t matter whether the people believed him or not, yet expected to deliver. Now it’s his turn to make good and prove that his words are worth the vote of confidence they gave him.

The SONA, let not make it sound like a campaign speech, or saying things that’s only good for sound bytes. Whatever said, that’s meaningless unless there’s a will and determination to see the end of it. In the final analysis, the people have the last word if they feel any changes in their way of life, kung yayaman na sila o giginhawa na sila sa kahirapan ng buhay o mawala na sila sa mga squatter areas kung mawala na ang mga corrupt.

  11. rose rose

ano ang kinalaman ni Kris at ni James sa SONA?…what roles did they have in the State of the Nation? amg buhay nga naman…

  12. rose rose

hindi naman natin masisi si gloria na ayaw niyang marinig ang SONA…truth hurts..kaya ayaw niyang marinig ang mga katotohan na siya ay malaking dahilan kung bakit ganito ang State of our nation.. besides gusto niya makapiling si tabbaboy at baka pumunta on top of Victoria Peak…hindi love is a many splendor thing doon sa Victoria Peak? kung hindi siya kasama di somebody else would share that splendor thing…

  13. jawo jawo

For whatever it is worth, the SONA will just be another litany of what was and what will be. While anxiety rises due to a SHOCKER as what Noynoy has promised, it would probably leave us all with dropped jaws in awe, disbelief, and clenched fists with anger. But at the end of the speech and the smoke clears, it will just be another “expose” of a bad past regime and cautious optimism for the future, but with mixed thoughts of whether the newbie in the palace can deliver the goods.

It is a small consolation to relish that we think we know gloria is as guilty as hell. Proving the allegations however, is another story. And we all know how good gloria is when it comes to being boxed in a corner. Remember, (most of )her cabal are still in their strategic places of power. Even Davide himself is delegated the task of investigating corruption and economic sabotage for which he was an active and willing participant. I mean, this alone already SUCKS !!

The SONA will have its highs and low points. But I’d rather have it as “SANA” (SAna Namatay na si Arroyo).

  15. I don’t approve of the “shocker” used here though, but its high time we hear the truth about the true state of the nation not from everywhere else so we can sift through these news from media properly, to finally get a hold of the facts and not bits and pieces of news handed from one source to another. Thats the problem with so many sources, when we get to the facts we think we’ve heard it before and wave them off as something useless when we really need to size up where we really stand financially, institutionally, etc., and start making some plans from there as to where we want to be.
Its nice to know people’s expectations, wants, desires for this administration to lay down their plans but we are doing it again – we voted, made our demands vocal (or printed) then we just went back to our old lives and expect the government to solve all our problems for us – this is downright stupid!
Don’t we have anyone saying this is what I’ll do for the country, for my fellowmen, etc., just “whats in it for us?”
Like I always say, FIlipinos are a difficult to manage bunch in their home turf…
…some corners who are just waiting to say “I told you so” are advocating choosing a leader who is strong, dominant, forceful, does not hesitate to swing the big bat at anybody in the way of progress, and corrupt – as we don’t need any namby pamby do gooder leader, we want leadership, and a dictator fits the bill as we Filipinos can’t discipline ourselves, need to be bossed around, likes to wait for scraps, etc, etc…
…we will be shocked to know that we can’t just sit and whimper and whine like sissies…that we have to so our share, that we have to sacrifice some more, that we need to volunteer – yes, volunteer, instead of crying about the plight of the poor and helpless, of children not getting education – volunteer to help, donate, give something, help!!!
…this whining and whimpering and pointing fingers at everyone else, trying to outdo each others’ patriotism by showing who can’t do this and that, that this guys are not qualified, or these are not appropriate is not productive.
Lets put our money where our mouth is – and give money literally, or are we quick to come up with excuses when shit hits the ceiling? The poor needs food, clothing, education, etc, – they need money, lets give money…
…they need our compassion, generosity, action – not so many words…

  16. I also don’t get the Kris/James angle either, why belabor an issue that is not supposed to be discussed by us-who-mind-our-own-business, we’re glorifying chismis, its despicable, its shameful….

  17. …if its a joke, its bad taste…

What is surprising is the lightly regarded Partido ng Masang Pilipino now boasts of Jojo Binay as Vice President, Enrile as Senate President and Jinggoy Estrada as Senate President Pro-Tempore.

Ha!. We should never lose our sense of humor.

  21. clearpasig clearpasig

Tama si reyna, bottom line PNoy suppose to fix the problem, kaya tama na alam ng tao kung saan sya nagsimula at kung anong meron sya bago magsimula, dahil kung walang accountability, mahirap lutasin ang problema. PNoy is just doing fine…slowly but surely.

From her Europe trip then passed at Dubai, at Middle East trip then daan din ng Dubai.

    Dapat yon din ang paimbistigahan.

Waiting SONA on ABS-CBN, and kept on hearing the Plunderers, Balingbing, Trapo, Fixture Polis, at mga Papogi na si PNoy daw kalimutan na ang nakaraan at i-solve na lang ang problema. Well no wang-wang, no reconcilation without justice.

Parang wala akong natatandaang ganyang sinabi mo kina goyang, ah?

    Wala akong pinakinabangan!

  26. Tagalog (Filipino) ang SONA!

Sa akin, malaking bagay ‘to.

To me, this is big. Over and beyond the substance of the President’s speech, is this a sign of the Filipino pride having been reawakened in diligently seeking to discover his national identity?

A lot said but let us wait for the delivery of the promises.
