What’s with Joker?

Sen. Joker Arroyo just won’t give up even if he had been reduced to stammering after he was proven wrong about his opposition to Senate Resolution 84 that seeks custody of detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV so could perform his duties as elected legislator.

Yesterday, Arroyo tried to block the implementation of the Senate resolution expressing the sense of the Senate “to rectify the apparent injustice” to the former military officer who dared stood up to Gloria Arroyo, by questioning the third and fourth “whereasses” in the resolution.

The third “whereas” referred to Senate Resolution No. 3 adopted on July 25, 2007 “Expressing the Sense of the Senate that Senator Trillanes IV be allowed to participate in the sessions and other functions of the Senate in accordance with the Rule of Law.”

Arroyo was adamant in his assertion that there was no 2007 Senate Resolution No. 3.

He also questioned the existence of the Nov. 11, 2008 Resolution 765 “Amending the Rules of the Senate by incorporating a rule to allow senators to participate in Senate sessions, hearings and meetings through remote or electronic means” in order to allow Trillanes, among others to participate in the sessions and other official functions of the Senate was

Trillanes’ lawyer Rey Robles gave Senate Majority Floor Leader Tito Sotto copies of the Senate records showing the existence of the two Senate resolutions.

Stammering, he still objected to Reso 84.

Probably to humor a senior colleague, Sotto deferred the filing of Reso 84 with before Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 148 next week.

It pains me to see Joker today. He was Malaya’s lawyer during the Marcos years. We owe the freedom we are enjoying now to his defense of those oppressed by the Marcos dictatorship.

But since he was elected to the Senate under Arroyo’s ticket, he has become Gloria Arroyo’s rabid defender. It’s obvious that his animosity to Trillanes has something to do with the young senator’s rebellion against Arroyo’s unelected presidency.

If Joker was a big disappointment, I admire Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri for signing on the resolution even if Trillanes was openly supporting Koko Pimentel in the latter’s election protest for the seat that Zubiri holds.

Although Zubiri qualified his signature “subject to the approval of the court” similar to that of Frank Drilon, Chiz Escudero, Gregorio Honasan, Francis Pangilinan, and Ralph Recto, it was still a notable gesture.

Other signatories of Reso 84 were Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, Senators Vicente Sotto III, Alan Peter Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Jinggoy Estrada, Teofisto Guingona III, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Loren Legarda, Sergio Osmena III, and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.

Sen. Arroyo might want to know the sentiment of the people who blog towards his opposition to Trillanes performing his legislative duties:

Under the midget parang walang pag-asang makalabas si Sonny. Kay P-Noy, malaki ang pagasa niyang makalabas. Joker Arroyo is a big Joke!”

But there are also some who somewhat agree with Joker. Jerry Taclino said “The Senate stands on shaky ground airing its sentiment in favor of a colleague who faces a court case. For sure the accused senator can ably defend himself legally. Meanwhile, let him face the consequences of his action.”

At the ABS-CBN website, JVcious23 reminded Joker of his campaign slogan: What happened to ‘kapag bad ka, lagot ka!’Broken promises.

“Haaay, Joker, retire now and just take good care of your health.”

If we visit history, Joker was one of those who invested in being an activist or human rights lawyer during the time of Marcos. To name a few, there’s the current VP Binay, Alvarez, Locsin and Saguisag. They became politicians, won elections and up to this time, some of them are still into it. With the exception of Saguisag whose sincerity in public service is unquestionable but can not stomach the dirty world of politics and quit, all the others maximized their gains from their investments.

Driving a point Joker is really a joke. He was never serious and sincere in his self-appointed role as defender of the oppressed, but just to make his name known and use as a springboard into the world of politics. His success in politics proved that he invested wisely, but nobody benefited from it, not the country, not the people but himself and those who provided him with financial security. His records in both houses will show that he has nothing to show in terms of accomplishments. He instead shamelessly acted as a defender of the oppressor and the corrupt.

Trillanes was once upon a time the number one enemy of his benefactor, Gloria. Joker’s rather indifference towards the situation of Trillanes is not surprising. He believed that the later was the principal destabilizer of Gloria’s government and must pay.

And so his opposition to the Senate resolution, for Trillanes to remain in his cell and to show that his loyalty to her is still intact.

I don’t know if joker arroyo is senile or what?he said “Sen. Arroyo might want to know the sentiment of the people who blog towards his opposition to Trillanes performing his legislative duties”

My question to joker is, how did vote trillanes to become a senator?isn’t that enough to answer his question, isn’t that enough the people elected trillanes and finally isn’t that enough that people wnat him to serve?

What does joker need? resolutions after resolutions were showed to him, yet he still declines to accept it.

Is he really senile or what?

  12. Maybe he still believes that he is upholding the rule of law, and he is protecting the constitution, keeping it from being bastardized by legal manipulations?
…then again, why was he silent all those nine years with Gloria?

I really do not understand what Senator Arroyo is doing and for what purposes or reasons, if any. For me, it is really about our Judiciary, specifically how our justice system works or handles the case of Senator Trillanes. Regardless of which directions the system takes so long true JUSTICE is at the forefront of its action people will accept but considering the case is over 7 years now it only shows what kind of justice system we have!

Parang ang hustisya ay isa lamang gamit to intimidate or wrest political control against those who disagree and not a true Justice System. Time and time again, our judiciary was use and being use for these purposes. No wonder many have least confidence with our Philippine judicial system anymore.

Joker is already in another dimension, the Twilight Zone! 🙂

  22. vic vic

most politicians, no matter how brilliant from the start would soon run out of good ideas if overstayed their welcome and that even the very exceptional could get there faster if a “little” influence (like the temptation of money)will get in the way. JOKER has been in that grey zone for a while back and even his good deed in the past are not enough to redeem his records…it is better for him just to Fade away and soon forgotten.

~sychitpin

Well, nice question Igan! Wala akong tulak-kabigin…believe is to see, ” ANO NA BA ANG PINAS NGAYON?”

  24. From Mel Mangoba:

What I see is that it is not only Senator Arroyo who has outlived his competence as a lawmaker.

By allowing the detention of Senator Trillanes to prevent him from performing his sworn duties as lawmaker the Congress of the Philippines has outlived its competence to be an independent branch of our democratic government.

I don’t understand why after two decades since the lifting of martial law political detainees are still languishing in military detention cells. What happened to the immunity from suit provision of the Constitution? Is it a joker provision?

What’s wrong with our courts? Have they also outlived their competence in the administration of justice? And why were the rebels in EDSA I were hailed as heroes while the latter rebels are treated as criminals?

    ——————————

My sentiments exactly! The way I see it, Trillanes is perceived to be a threat to well entrenched personalities and a crooked system in the military will expose the organization…
