Man in G-string stopped from Clinton lecture

By Vincent Cabreza
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Rep. Baguilat, one of the more progressive public officials, is offended.
BAGUIO CITY—A teenager from Sagada town, Mountain Province almost did not get a return for the “good money” that was paid to listen to former United States President Bill Clinton’s lecture at the Manila Hotel on “our common humanity” because he was wearing an Igorot G-string.

Moshe Dacmeg, 19, was almost thrown out of the hotel’s conference hall on Wednesday by an unidentified American and two hotel employees who regarded his Kankanaey G-string attire as inappropriate.

Dacleg is an aide of Vladimir Cayabas, administrator of the Baguio-based National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT), who spent P6,000 to bring the boy and a friend to the lecture.

From China, Ifugao Rep. Teodoro Baguilat Jr. told the Inquirer he was offended by the report.

“Diplomats who come to the Philippines should be educated about cultural sensibilities. A man in a G-string is not a terrorist but an honorable man,” said Baguilat, who chairs the House committee on indigenous cultural communities.

Cayabas, a Kankanaey from Mountain Province, had attended formal events in Baguio and the Cordillera wearing a G-string. But for the Clinton lecture, he wore a Cordillera-inspired Barong Tagalog. His female companion was in a Kankanaey “tapis” (skirt).

When they arrived at the hotel at 3 p.m., Cayabas said, they showed the hotel security guards their bags containing the G-string and an indigenous head dress which Cayabas planned to wear at the lecture.

No dress code

“We were let through so we assumed it would not be a problem. Our tickets never indicated a dress code, and we were there to offer our cultural presence [given Clinton’s topic],” Cayabas said.

Shortly before the lecture began, Cayabas claimed, an American approached them and motioned Dacmeg to leave.

“The American kept telling us he would not mind dragging Moshe out of the conference hall if the boy insisted on being stubborn. He repeated this several times and I was confused because I did not know what he meant,” Cayabas said.

“Each time we tried to answer, the American would say ‘Don’t argue with me,’” he said.

The American left the NIIT group when he noticed the presence of television cameras, Cayabas said. But a few minutes later, a woman also approached them and asked Dacmeg to leave the area.

“That’s when I got angry. I refused. I said we paid for our tickets and we insisted on listening to the lecture,” Cayabas said.

Some television news reporters urged Dacmeg to wear a T-shirt to help appease hotel officials, but Cayabas said he refused because doing so would dishonor the G-string.

“In our culture, you do not mix the G-string with other attire,” he said.

Outraged

“But it was cold so I allowed Moshe to finally wear the shirt. Then we listened to Clinton preach about embracing our common humanity. That we should all embrace economic and cultural interdependence. We were amused by the irony,” Cayabas said.

Outraged messages began circulating online among the Igorot community after members learned about the incident.

Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan also waded in after his wife, Becky, was mistakenly identified as a member of Cayabas’ group. Domogan, a former Baguio representative, had also worn a G-string in various government affairs.

“[Dacmeg] looked good in G-string. It is very refreshing that young people are proud of their heritage and culture… In our culture, G-strings are worn on any occasion. It’s just a matter of how we present ourselves while wearing them,” she said.

For the education of those who are ignorant about the Igorot’s indigenous clothing, here’s a link on how to wear a G-String.

Hay naku, ano ba yan? The topic ‘our common humanity’ is so out of touch with the realities of different cultures. Ironic talaga….

  2. chi chi

Are they Democrats or what?

  3. Here’s what Clinton said, according to the Inquirer report:

“Inequality in global economics and instability in world politics are making it difficult for countries like the Philippines to operate on a level equal to more progressive nations…”

He even praised his classmate, whom many Filipinos despise:

“Clinton said he admired the move of his former classmate, Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, to file a bill on corporate social responsibility as well as the continued efforts of former President Fidel Ramos to write books and immerse himself in social issues.”

Here’s the link to the news report: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/nation/view/20101112-302762/Clinton-mentions-worlds-3-most-significant-problems

Would you pay P6,000 for this?

Why do these guys keep throwing their weight around here? Anong pakialam nila kung naka G-String siya? That’s culture and they’re here in Baguio. Why not ask GMA to wear G-String?

I can just imagine how happy Gloria is with Clinton’s praises on her. If I were President Noynoy, I would not have granted Clinton an audience. Wasn’t Pnoy in Cebu or he rushed back to Manila to receive Clinton at Malacanang?

  5. chi chi

I believe Clinton is not aware of the pinoy’s galit towards her korap classmate. If he was, then he must really be in love with Gloria because of the millions $$$ of our money that the bitch donated to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Listening to his P6000 per head lecture just to hear his praise of Gloria Arroyo is pointless, we know better!

The event was at the Manila Hotel.

Grabeng pang-iinsulto ito NOT Once, but Twice…anong sense mayroon ang inilalako ni Clinton ifs wala namang sense of humility ang kanyang staff to handle the affairs?

    #7 Perl,

Bakit nasabi ko ito…i’m working here in abroad morethan 25 years now at marami na akong nakahalubilong Expats from Asia to around the world at i know their pag-uugali at diskarte pero itong mga Kano, magaling lang silang magIngles…but NOT lahat sa kanila e tama ang grammar…do you know what i mean?

  11. Golberg Golberg

In layman’s word, ang kaguluhan sa bawat panig ng mundo is a big business at ang Amerika ang nakikinabang dito dahil ito ang isa sa kanilang business…high end technology to kill and destroy people.

Natumbok mo Balweg.

In oneshot…2 birds agad ang tepok!

This is a disgrace. Ted Baguilat should direct his disappointment to the Hotel Management and those employees who cowered down when the american told Moshe Dacmeg to leave.
To the employees, knowing that there were no dress codes imposed; and the fact that Clinton’s speech was about “Embracing our Common Humanity”, should have stood their ground, let Moshe go in with his attire and told the american to piss off. For this american not to have any clue of what the speech was all about, he must be an ignorant redneck who doesn’t know the existence of American Indians in his home country who in a way dresses like our own Indigenous People all over the islands.

On a lighter mode; I think Ted Baguilat needs to shape up a little bit, no pun intended.

In other words, sina VP Binay at Dacmeg e di kabilang sa Humanoid race kaya etchapwera sila…hehehe!

I want to talk to your boss, not you”.

Again, walang bumili.

Driving his redneck Ford truck to the Chedeng dealer at the now NC’s most progressive city of Greensboro, halos hindi raw sya harapin ng agents because of his pang-bundok attire…in short hindi sya naka-Amerikana. Lapit daw ang manager and rudely told him, “you can’t afford that”.

Sa inis at galit, binuksan ang kanyang backpack at kinuha ang malutong na pang 50% cash pang-down sa Chedeng and said “unlucky you, you could have had a big commission right now” sabay alis. Hinabol daw sya ng manager sa kanyang redneck truck profusely apologizing, but he didn’t pay attention…brooooommm away!

Galit sya sa nga taga city ng US kasi ang yayabang daw and sooo rude. Amerikano na sya ha, taga-bundok nga lang.

    Clinton’s speech is no sellout

    By KEVIN CONNOR, SUN MEDIA
    Last Updated: August 29, 2009 3:49am
Former U.S. president Bill Clinton’s speech today at the Canadian National Exhibition isn’t a sellout and taxpayers may have to foot the bill.
There were 25,000 tickets on sale, but as of last night only 9,000 had been purchased, David Bednar, general manager of the CNE, said.

The money funding Clinton’s speech comes from a $3-million federal grant, with terms that the CNE must earn $1 million back from the spent funds.

Clinton can be paid anywhere from $175,000 to $300,000 for a speaking event.
Bednar says he can’t comment on how much it cost to bring Clinton to the CNE.

“Ironically, it will be known once his wife (U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) does her filing (of family income),” Bednar said.
“People are going on and on that the taxpayer will be on the hook (because of poor sales), but that still remains to be seen.”
Tickets were being sold at a price of $20, $40 and $50 for the best seats.
Today, people can buy tickets for $5 after they have paid the $15 admission into the CNE grounds.
Clinton’s speech, Embracing Our Common Humanity, will last about 45 minutes.
“I don’t know what he will talk about, but I would be surprised if he didn’t talk about the efforts of his foundation,” Bednar said.
“I’m hoping to hear some inspirational words.”

Thanks for the correction, Ms. Tordesillas. I thought Clinton also went up to Baguio.

Not allowing Binay to enter the room was okay but not yelling or shouting. One should not be yelling even at ordinary person. We Filipinos are quite sensitive to this. Some bosses and managers are too cocky yelling at their subordinates and employees. Kaya nga may napapatay at work place violence. Such arrogant attitude by the managers abroad like the US is common. That’s why Filipinos who work abroad are not used to being shouted at.

  34. Isagani Isagani

Why so many people idolize Bill Clinton is simply amazing. It is probably because Billy boy is so good with words. It is that or his fans are simply fools.

Bill Clinton is a liar and a cheat. He is the only American president that nearly got impeached for lying to the American people. He appeared on TV and a straight face lied: “I did not have sex with that woman,” he claimed.

Probably, Bill Clinton is out of touch with the realities of events, misinformed or simply doesn’t care about he talks about. Fact of the matter is, many Americans look at Bill and Hilary Clinton as the greatest liars in the world. That is probably why Hilary lost her run for the presidency.

In an interview regarding the 9/11 issue, he lost his cool and insisted that he did something to fight terrorism, but failed. He stressed that emphatically. Of course, those who really know his background as a draft dodger know better.

So, this incident with the G-string and with VP Binay is not surprising. Billy boy probably doesn’t really know the meaning of what he talks about. He speaks well – does the talk but not the walk.

Alam mo Igan, ang punto ng usapan e away from the people of Tate…kaya specific ang punto de bista ko against dito sa ginawa ng staff ni Billy boy.

Ngayon, kung may nabanggit ako about sa foreign policy ng Tate sa bawat bansa e open book yan, kaya they hated the Americans lalo na dito sa Middle East, Central America, Africa and some part of Asia.

For your infos. ang ilan sa mga nakakaharap ko e mga US military officers/serviceman and civilian employees kasi nga e sila ang military advisers dito.

At kahalobilo ko din e mga American Doctors, Headnurse, Nurses and other staffs from different fields kaya bukas ang pananaw ko sa mga nangyayari sa pangloob at panglabas lalo na kung foreigh policy ng Tate ang isyu.

Syiempre napagkukumpara namin ang ugali-asal ng mga Kano, Brits, Frances, German and other nationalities kung sino talaga sila.

Kaya kami dito e bukas ang pananaw sa buhay kasi nga from western, oriental to 3rd world countries e halos kahalobilo namin.

Isagani @35…Clinton I believe was impeached (indicted) by the House and was acquited by the Senate..for the Monica’s perjury case and Paula Jones lawsuit. As i said he is ready tosay what his listeners wanted to hear, but during his last engagement during the Canadian National Exhibition, the tickets went on fire sale and nobody cares..the taxpayers had to subsidize for his usual speaking fee. George W. commands a better audience and even ms Palin during their engagement here. he is a good speaker, but his `reputation`bores many of his former followers.

    Re:40 Vic,

This Clinton foundation caper is probably there just to give Billy boy something to do. He can’t do without the limelight. He enjoys the celebrity status more than what the foundation is supposed to stand for. Apparently, his staff reflect this – they behave more like stormtroopers.

  43. Although Satan could be Gloria’s spawn, let’s be fair here. Gloria achieved things so that Noynoy brag about them. These are things like the economic growth and the Millenium Development Funding from Mr. Joe.

  44. Martinsampaga, if you notice i’ve changed to lower case (small letters) phrases that you have written in all caps.

It’s jarring to read sentences in all caps. Parang nagsisigaw.

Please refrain from using all caps in your comments. As I have said here time and again, readers here are intelligent, they get you message even if it’s written not capitalized.

    Thank you.

Well, this is another story but to tell you frankly…ang listahan ng desperados sa ating bansa e patuloy na nadaragdag due to your concern…people’s court ang sagot diyan.

WORSE than C-5.” That is how architect Felino Palafox describes the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport (Apeco) in Casiguran, Aurora.

Apeco, on the other hand, is a P1-billion economic zone that is intended to boost social, economic and industrial development in Aurora and nearby provinces. “It will bring the entire Luzon to the Pacific,” said Senator Edgardo Angara, who authored the bill creating Apeco together with his son Aurora Representative Juan Angara.

  48. From Katribu Partylist:

IP partylist cry fouls over unfair treatment of Clintons security

    Inappropriate?

For indigenous peoples, our traditional costumes are appropriate dresses. In fact, today, most of us wear our traditional clothes only for special and important occasions such as weddings, graduations, awarding ceremonies and other recognitions, including meetings or gatherings with personages such as Bill Clinton. We wear them with much pride and respect. It shows our distinct identity as indigenous peoples – peoples who practice sustainable and environmental development as for us ‘land is life.’ Our valiant history against colonization and continuing defense of defense of lands, livelihood, life and culture are living testimonies.

Clinton should feel honored that Dacmeg and his group attended his lecture dressed as such.

    Common Humanity?

The incident at the Manila Hotel only shows that we indigenous peoples continue to experience discrimination due to our distinct identity and culture. Discrimination bred by a policy of ‘divide-and-rule’ starting in colonization. Discrimination bred from years of mis-education on who are indigenous peoples.

Books and reference materials portray us indigenous peoples wrongly. In the teaching of Philippine history, some say that we indigenous peoples are racially inferior to other Filipinos because our ancestors came on a different wave of population migration. Also the falsehood that indigenous peoples have nothing in common with other Filipinos in terms of culture and history; further, that indigenous peoples had no role in birthing the Filipino nation, in fighting for independence from Spanish, Japanese and American colonization.

In the same manner, that media portray us indigenous peoples as ignorant, wild, dirty savages, and ridicule us especially in movies, on television and other audio-visual forms.

Embracing Our Common Humanity – common humanity would mean equal rights and treatment, base on respect for peoples’ rights and identity regardless of sex, religion, ethnicity and the like. Embracing our common humanity is understanding the situation, and respecting the culture and rights of indigenous peoples.

Such treatment from foreigners is humiliating and doubly insulting as it occurred in our country. If done for security reasons – does wearing a ‘wanes’ or ‘bahag’ and being barefoot threatening?

~juggernaut

Hehehe…easy money!

Same words said by JP Enrile, about the Cagayan Export Processing Zone, which turned out later to be a smugglers’ haven. Remember the Euro Chambers getting a mouthful at a Senate hearing? These guys were complaining then to GMA about the cheap imports (euphemism for “smuggled goods”) coming from that port Enrile gave them a tongue lashing and then some. My friend Hubert D’Aboville got most of the flying liquid.

Here is a balanced article (an earlier one):

    http://www.gmanews.tv/story/205676/globalization-greets-barefoot-loinclothed-sagada-man

A representative from the Manila Hotel told GMANews.TV, however, that the attire for the event was strictly semi-formal or business.

When Dacmeg first arrived, he wasn’t wearing his loincloth, said Sam Dominguez, public relations officer of the Manila Hotel.

Tapos biglang nakita namin siya, [naka-bahag na]. Definitely, kung naka-ganun siya, hindi siya pinapasok,” she said.

This is another unenlightened person. And to think she is in public relations! She should be given a lecture on Filipino heritage.

  60. Not the fault of Clinton aides, I think. They were doing their job but must say these Americans must strive to educate themselves on the customs and traditions of a host country.

However, given that the aides were as ignorant as my dog and all the other dogs within the 20-mile radius where I sit in matters related to RP customs, the fault lies squarely on the locals (like the co-called PR officer Dominguez bitch) who were officially involved in the forum. They should have come to the succor of the G-stringed fellow to tell them that where he came from, G-string was a formal attire.

One should ask the Manila Hotel what was wrong with a native of the Philippine islands stepping into the hotel wearing a perfectly suitable Filipiniana garb?

  61. Best thing to do is to gift Mr Clinton with a g-string set, courtesy of our brothers from the north!

  62. he must really be in love with Gloria because of the millions $$$ of our money that the bitch donated to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Spot on! But kidding aside, Chi, I think it was Manuel Buencamino who said that Clinton used Gloria’s head as a coaster (to put his drink on) while she was doing something not terribly Catholic… Ay bastos!!! 😛
