‘Trillanes may have come short on tact, but Reyes came definitely short on truth.’

A cavalier, a term used for graduates of the Philippine Military Academy, forwarded to me a series of texts. The first one was this:”Let us not forget the uncavalier act of Antonio Trillanes that humiliated and shamed Cav Reyes to the public.

“When the proper time comes, let every cavalier judge Antonio Trillanes and put him where he rightfully belongs. The time of reckoning is about to come.”

It was followed by other Trillanes demolition texts which were circulated immediately after the 2003 Oakwood incident and revived during the 2007 senatorial campaign. It’s about the finances and rifts in Magdalo. Those misinformations have been answered by Trillanes.

One PMAer also texted me that in the forthcoming PMA alumni homecoming, there’s a plan by some to put up a streamer, “Let’s boycott Trillanes in the next national election. Be a wise voter!”

Former AFP Chief Hermogenes Esperon (Class ’74) has chimed in and said he was also hurt of the treatment by Trillanes (Class ’95) of Reyes (Class ’66). He said, “Sobrang yabang ng batang ‘yan” (That young man is so arrogant.)

The incident referred to by Esperon was the confrontation in the hearing of the Blue Ribbon Committee on the questionable plea bargain agreement entered into by the Office of the Ombudsman and retired military comptroller Carlos Garcia. Former military budget officer Lt. Col. George Rabusa showed up as a surprise resource person and revealed that he gave Reyes P50 million send off gift when the latter retired in march 2001. Aside from the send-off gift, Rabusa said he was giving Reyes P10 million a month allowance, outside his legal pay.

Reyes wanted to question Rabusa directly which was not allowed by Senate rules (but the rule was briefly waived and Reyes directly addressed Rabusa) saying that he wanted to protect his reputation. Trillanes snapped at him, “ If you are so concerned about your name, you should have fixed yourself while you were in office! This is the time of reckoning. You better find very good lawyers….You have no reputation to protect!”

I understand where Trillanes is coming from having been incarcerated by these upperclassmen for more than seven years and for what? For exposing corruption in the military.

Although it would do him good if he learns to speak his truth as advised in Desiderata “quietly and clearly”, his shortcoming in demeanor is not a crime to the Filipino people.

As journalist Vergel Santos said, “Trillanes may have come short on tact, but Reyes came definitely short on truth.”

A young Magdalo officer said Trillanes committed only one mistake and that’s graduating much, much later than Reyes and his ilk. “The bastards couldn’t stand being made to answer for their sins by an underclassman. Miriam said worse things. She used the word moron. And where’s the indignation?”

Magdalo officer Lt. Jonnell Sangalang put the practice of protecting fellow cavaliers in the proper perspectice in his Facebook wall.

He said, “While it is true that part of a cavalier’s training is not to ‘squeal out’ fellow cavaliers, this is solely intended and applicable against certain regulations, like hazing, liquor and the likes.

“This will not and should not in anyway, justify honor violations (lie, cheat, and steal). These acts are never tolerated. Anyone, even the most junior member of the class/cavaliers is morally obligated to report such violations.

An upperclassman who fails to acknowledge or accept his faith as an honor violator is entitled to be ostracized. An underclass will have the moral authority to act rudely on him! Kahit duraan pa sa mukha.”

Blogger Anne from United Kingdom, a Filipina married to a British military officer, said she finds weird the situation of upperclassmen ganging up on a underclass officer. She said “In theory, senior officers, particularly star-ranking officers don’t gang up on a junior officer in public.

“On the contrary should be the first from among those who are on a lynching mode to calm down the rest of the members of the officers corps, but heck no, in the Philippines, it’s the other way around. Not the officer and gentleman thing to do at all. There’s one word for that: Cowardice.”

Blogger Becky said Trillanes should not worry about those officers threatening not to vote for him in 2013. They did not vote for him in 2007 and he won.

    nagpakamatay dahil napahiya?????
that serious….may he rest in peace if he is with God…

trillanes was just being truthful with his statement.. like that

  2. What do they expect, pinakulong nila yung tao for 7 years for speaking out against corruption that they tolerated and even took advantage of? Given the circumstances Trillanes was civil. Why, did he curse anyone, did he use the bs words, did he call anyone names?

  3. At least these old farts and misguided upperclassmen now know the meaning of falling from grace. Trillanes is there to speak for people who cannot speak for themselves, to fight for people who cannot fight for themselves, and how do we effectively deal with these arrogant bastards who believe they are above the law, say “pardon my saying sir, would it be okay for me to ask you to tell us the truth?” at sino naman ang hindi ma ha highblood kung ginagawa kang tanga? Generals, maraming post graduate degrees pa, pag tinatanong tungkol sa pera biglang naging ulyanin? Kung hindi mo mainsulto ewan ko lang.

  4. Trillanes is there to speak for people who cannot speak for themselves, to fight for people who cannot fight for themselves,

Absolutely spot on, Jug! Well said!

  5. As a follow on to what Jug has said, it is actually surprising that media, with the exception of incredibly courageous Ellen, has not come to rally around Trillanes!

You would have thought that, finally, here is one junior officer who is taking on a powerful gang of military thieves, all opinion writers, columnists, reporters of the broadcast and print world, and they should be rallying around him, thankful that finally, someone has the enormous courage to do it!

I am simply amazed… sense of values gone awry alright.

  6. Media may not like his gait, his looks, his guts, but by gum, what matters is that he is doing the right thing when it matters most.

If they are looking for an interesting angle to writetheir story, here it is, being served to them on a silver platter: one junior officer, incarcerated for 7 years for denouncing criminal activities in the armed forces, and now taking on a gathering of generals on his own… By gum, there’s one frigging human story to write!

  7. Ha! The nerve of these guys… After all they have done to the military coffers as reported by Trillanes, they now have the gall to ostracize Trillanes for being unCavalier. What’s more unCavalier, dipping into military coffers while your foot soldiers suffer from poor war materiel supplied to them and dying on the battlefield while they line their pockets with gold and silver as reported by Rabusa, or telling the truth as what Rabusa and Heidi and Trillanes did?

I think this is humiliating for us Filipinos… I think that’s why somebody pulled the trigger and died because of that.

This is a dark moment for our country. But, and a big BUT, there is still hope if we collectively learn from this and pull our acts together, make some changes on things run in the handling the military budget, get righteous people at the helm who will ensure that there are no shenanigans happening within their area of responsibility.

I know this is a tough act, but Filipinos are resilient and that resilience and faith in its leaders will turn things around for the better. Otherwise, well, sigh, sigh, sigh…

  8. Back in the day it wasn’t called “arrogance” but “righteous indignation.”

  9. jawo jawo

The problem with these generals is that they still see Trillanes as a a petty underclassman. They forget the fact that AT4 is now a civilian elected senator of the republic who’s probing eyes (in aid of legislation) transcends even beyond their questionable ranks. They were so spoiled by Gloria herself they also forgot the supremacy of civilian authority over the military in our system of government.

  10. Al Al

From Raissa Robles blog:If Trillanes does not destroy himself within the next three years, he will become a strong contender for the presidency in 2016.

Naku, Trillanes will really be a target of attacks. Even among his allies, he will be undermined. They will throw him to the wolves to eliminate him from the race as early as possible.

Has Gloria Arroyo’s demolition teams taken over?

Tama talaga ang kanta ni Gary Granada. Pahiram Mr. Bayonic (from another thread):

“Nanakawan na at naholdap si Juan/Ngunit ang holdaper pa ang pinasalamatan/Nabaon sa utang ang bayan ni Juan/Ngunit ang nagnakaw pa ang pinararangalan.” – Gary Granada

  12. AI, I’m afraid, the criminal gang of military officers who can’t stand Trillanes for doing the right thing are now preparing as we speak to destroy Trillanes.

The Filipino nation and the rest of the good thinking military population should rally around him.

  13. vic vic

This was the country where the “willies” and the deal makers and the conspirators made it to the top..Trilla might change and establish the new rule..that you got to be strong..rough, and if necessary where the rule of law would not work in your favour…let your rule turn the wheels of justice…just prove it works and hope it will continue to work..

  14. Al Al

I have no doubt,Anna, that what you said is taking place. I’m sure with a lot of support from Arroyo.

  15. Mike Mike

From Raissa Robles blog: “If Trillanes does not destroy himself within the next three years, he will become a strong contender for the presidency in 2016.”

What if Trillanes really becomes the President come 2016? Eh di magiging Commander-In-Chief siya ng buong AFP including the old farts who doesn’t like Trillanes. Ang saya nun, hehehe 🙂

  16. mike,
it will be an extremely uphill battle for him. for one, sa panahon ni gloria hindi lang hanggang general ang biyaya, bumaba hanggang colonel level na. ang nakakatakot niyan kung tanggap na ng marami ang ganitong kalakaran, tapos walang karapatan magmalinis kahit sino, just “wait your turn.”
    papayag ba silang mawalan nito?

  17. As far as I know, a presidential bid in 2016 is not among his plans.

  18. yes. its better he doesn’t telegraph his moves. let him do his job in the senate first, he has the advantage of age, baka nga mamamatay na yang mga generals na yan, starting with esperon? sunod na rin si senga

  19. Even as a member of the Senate, a Magdalo officer said they foresee some awkward situations when Trillanes becomes a member of the Commission on Appointments. Many of those upperclass officers will need his consent for their promotions.

  20. Ellen, yes… talks on a possible presidential bid should not be encouraged. Not the right thing to talk about today. Would be doing Trillanes great disfavour to even raise the sceptre of a presidential bid.

  21. Tedanz Tedanz

“Hero’s burial for Reyes” .. Inquirer
Ano????

  22. I think he has talked with those who have obvious presidential ambition in 2016 to assure them that he won’t be joining the race.

  23. Re #21.

– Gary Granada

  24. Feb Feb

One can only surmise that those old fogies who hurl insults at Senator Trillanes are guilty of some wrong doing in the AFP. These are the very people who want the truth to be buried with Angelo Reyes. It would be advisable for those generals to find their favorite spot and do the so-called “honorable thing.”

  25. Tedanz Tedanz

Itong isa ginawa pang isang bayani …. di ba kagaguhan iyan!!!!!!!
Onli in da Pilipins!!!!!! Puweeee !!!! Iniiiiiiis ……

  26. Al Al

#19. Kaya dapat alamin kung sino among the active officers will denounce him during the PMA homecoming. Kapag dumaan sila sa CA, pwedeng tanungin.

  27. Tedanz Tedanz

  34. Isagani Isagani

What he is doing is a small step to a greater leap of transformation to the whole nation. The latest trend of events or news are signs of “turning Point” for a change. If only the late Angie Reyes, did not performed the harikiri, the change will be more quicker.

  37. parasabayan parasabayan

  39. parasabayan parasabayan

The journalists who are making Angie a hero are still on the bansot’s payroll. The bansot prepared for this, that she and all those with her during her reign will be persecuted and ridiculed, which they rightfully deserve. Kaya nandyan pa yung spookswoman niyang si Horn(may sungay). Sinungaling itong si Horn, sabi niya hindi daw kinausap ni bansot si Angie before he killed himself.

  40. parasabayan parasabayan

Para sa akin, Pnoy does not have to TALK. What for? Ang importante, he is allowing the process of probing these corrupt generals. That to me is enough.

Nuong panahon ni bansot, salita siya ng salita but we all knew that she did all the things oppossite to what she said.

  41. Para sa akin, Pnoy does not have to TALK. What for? Ang importante, he is allowing the process of probing these corrupt generals.

    Agree with PSB.

If Aquino talks about this at this stage, he might be seen as meddling and giving it a more political colour than it already has — let Congress do what they have to do. The Executive branch has other things to do. It’s not going to be more advantageous to Trillanes.

  42. At the funeral, retired Lt. Gen. Jacinto Ligot, who served as military comptroller during the time of Reyes as AFP chief, said “Reyes made a supreme sacrifice of offering his life, maybe to solve these problems.

The shithead is full of “maybes” and “I don’t knows”. His wife goes on a shopping spree for houses and he didn’t know how she did it, he receives millions and gives them to Reyes, he says doesn’t remember… he’s not sure of anything or knows anything except when it was time to steal millions.

For a man whose brain seems to be the size of a pea, how the hell did he get those 3 stars on his shitty shoulders? Maybe, from a vending machine?

  43. Off for a few days, off to the country to see what builders are up to; no access to the net… ciao and have fun all ye lovers!

Trillanes to Reyes, “ If you are so concerned about your name, you should have fixed yourself while you were in office! This is the time of reckoning. You better find very good lawyers….You have no reputation to protect!”

Totoo naman a, masakit talaga! Angie benefited most from Glorias corrupt rule. He was made heads of important and rich agencies, hindi sya nawalan ng trabaho at pagkakakorapan. Korek, he embraced corruption ‘partly’ but in effect en toto naman.

Boycott Trillanes? You did it already in 2007 election panalo pa rin kami…irrelevant kayo hoy!

  47. chi chi

I’m not bothered with the said lack of demeanor of Trillanes in dealing with Reyes because he spoke the truth. Sabi ko nga, the ordinary kapinuyan are happy that he did it.

If the Cavaliers and ‘sophisticated’ pinoys like Tulfo were hurt, it’s because they’re resisting change in the country’s culture of corruption, they’re scared of the likes of Trillanes and Lacson in the Senate. Let them continue to be afraid, it’s time to undergo much needed change even it kills all the koraps. Who cares?!

I would rather support a “tactless” senator who bluntly spoke out the truth about corruption in AFP rather than an acclaimed” hero who took his own life to bury the truth to “save” the organization that he was part of. It is in the belief that Reyes buried the truth with him that those who were participants of the corrupt system, are now rejoicing and praising their “hero” to the high heavens — even to the point of saying that suicide is an honorable death. As Ligot said, Reyes made the supreme sacrifice… For whom? Coming from him, Reyes’ death makes it more apparent that he died in the hope that truth will never come out. I hope and pray that his death would, instead, intensify people’s quest for truth and that more people would come out and join the expose on corruption in government as a whole, not just the AFP.

  57. chi chi

It’s about time he uses the young Senator’s talents and skills to combat corruption.

Me paghuhukom! Bwahaha….

  61. I got this note from former PC-INP Chief Ramon Montaño (then the PC was still one of the major services of the AFP) – PMA Class ’58.

Are cavaliers now condemning Trillianes who just followed the PMA Code of Honor by reporting an honor violator? What was drummed into our heads, in our hearts and in our consciousness long time ago during beast barracks was the central theme of the PMA Code of Honor: a cadet does not lie, cheat and steal or tolerate those who do.

Our generation of Cavaliers are proud of Trillianes and his Magdalo who lived by this Code at great personal risks and sacrificing their careers and the welfare of their families to awake the nation of the massive corruption of the AFP High Command depriving the soldiers of their basic needs in the fight against the purveyors of violence against our people.

Most of the Oakwood mutineers were of the late 90’s and early 2000 generation who are still idealistic and some had personal knowledge of how the Comptroller family and the senior comdrs manipulated all to steal these funds.

  62. delajuan delajuan

  63. Another one from Gen. Montaño:

To Sen. Trillanes, we salute you. Carry on.

  64. parasabayan parasabayan

We need more Montanos. Please come out now so Trillianes will have the support to go on with his fight against the corrupt generals and their patrons.

  65. thats good news ellen!
now that the upperclassmen of trillanes’ upperclassmen are supporting him, they are bound to respect seniority (kung maron sila nun?) either way, mas pakikinggan nila si oldest brother… hehehe 🙂

  66. Feb Feb

With reference to #64 (on General Montano’s comments), what Senator Trillanes did in Oakwood was the Honorable Way; what Angelo Reyes did was the Cowards’ Way.

Baka pag hindi nila na realize yan, magiging “we the cadets do not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do so but if we do we must be very fast?”

  68. parasabayan parasabayan

Everybody knows that he was one of the “smooth operators” in the 2004 election cheating for the bansot! Nagmamalinis pa ang isang ito. Hmp! If Angie booted out Erap in favor of bansot, this corrupt esperon aided BIGTIME in the election cheating of the bansot. Kaya pwede ba asspweron, tumahimik ka na! I hope you will be the next one to take your own life. This time blow your “utak pulburon” out!

It is really surprising, as Ms Anna DeBrux said, that the media, majority of them, has not said anything good about Senator Trillanes. In fact, I read the commentaries of the columnists in major newspapers and even tabloids and most of them has not even said a single good thing about the senator. There is one particular newspaper where their editorial and columnists have collectively blamed the senator. Could it be that they still believe in the last administration?

Any of the former CoS, active and retired generals who openly declare a statement of support for Sen. Trillanes crusade against the termites in the AFP, is the only ones who still have a healthy doze of what their beloved alma mater code of honor has instilled in them.

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Monday clarified that he never directly linked former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to alleged corruption in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“I never named anybody, it was fed into me,” Trillanes told reporters in an interview on Monday.

He made the clarification after he was quoted as saying that the Senate investigation on the alleged AFP corruption may be expanded to look into the possible involvement of those in Malacañang during the time of Arroyo.

“I said it’s not far fetched… it’s not the same as I named her,” he said.

    Ellen,

His lack of tack aside, magulo yata ang mga pahayag ni Trillanes.

On January 18, Reyes was not the powerful person behind Garcia.

Then, for some reason known only to Trillanes, Rabusa’s testimony on January 27 changed that. On February 2, Trillanes pinned down Reyes as Garcia’s padrino.

But we know now that Rabusa never knew Garcia’s protector. I am assuming here Rabusa told the truth.

And now we have here Trillanes turning around, retracting what he said, claiming that Reyes was not Garcia’s protector but only one of the principals. But the question now is what is the difference between a principal and protector?

What can you say about Enrile and Honasan’s (one of Trillanes’ sponsor) admonishment to Trillanes?

If Trillanes doesn’t shape up, siya ang babagsak dito.

  87. NFA rice NFA rice

Also, Trillanes claimed that Malacanang knows the identity of this person, but PNoy denied such claim.

    What is going on here?

  88. Pinagpipilitan ni Robles na sinabi sa kanya ni Reyes na he was subjected to grilling, referring to Pandak’s phone call. Putot was insisting to know if Reyes’ letter-carrier was ex-GMA aide and ex-classmate of Trillanes, LtCmdr. Chris Magdangal. Magdangal must be extremely important to Gloria she must be sure he is still in her side during these times.

This angle must be pursued vigorously, my crystal ball says he just might be the key to Gloria’s link to the AFP Fund scandal. Being her military aide and one who could camouflage himself among his co-soldiers in the camps, a bagman’s role in stealth mode is a big possibility. You don’t expect Putot or her husband carrying around suitcases filled with hundreds of millions, do you? An aide does that.

I wonder why no journalist has picked it up, even after Rabusa has provided the clue. Waiting for the spoon-feeding?

  90. Re #91. Trillanes said Malacanang, not PNoy.

Maybe Trillanes relayed the info to one official there. Whether that official relayed it to Pnoy, that’s another thing.

  91. Don’t get confused, NFA rice. I will repeat what I have posted here earlier, also as explained by Ellen. This is also for those who missed that post.

Trillanes and Garcia shared the Crame stockade for some time (years). It is safe to assume that they shared some secrets including that of Garcia’s protectors. When Trillanes asked Garcia in the hearing if he plans to help the Senate in the investigation, he will be supported. But Garcia rejected the offer outright and even said “I will not turn state witness”.

Fine. Even if Trillanes knows the real mastermind, who will collaborate his accusation? Not Garcia. So when he was asked after the hearing who the protectors were, he just said, “According to Rabusa’s testimony, Reyes was one of them.” Note, this is different from saying “Reyes was one of them” without the first phrase.

I don’t know how you concluded that “we now know that Rabusa never knew Garcia’s padrino” when it was during Reyes’ time as DND Sec. that Garcia was promoted to the Comptrollership.
Those who succeeded Reyes in the CSAFP position didn’t have the chance to change the Comptroller because their stints would last only for months, no choice but to retain Garcia if they wanted to perpetuate the welcome-cum-monthly allowance-cum-pabaon system. Appointing a new Comptroller would be risky. It is Gloria who appoints CSAFP, and the short term tours-of-duty is highly suspect.

That removes all of Reyes’ successors at the CSAFP as Garcia’s main padrino, leaving only DND Sec. Reyes and Gloria herself as the culprits.

Having failed to get an official confession from Garcia to implicate Gloria or anyone else in Malacañang, while Rabusa was providing the details of the scam done right at the nose of Reyes, both in Ligot’s and Garcia’s time, either as CSAFP of DND Sec., and none yet of Arroyo, logic dictates that the only plausible answer to the interview was Reyes, but only according to the testimony just heard.

Noy on AFP protector: Let DOJ build case
By Delon Porcalla (The Philippine Star) Updated February 15, 2011 12:00 AM]MANILA, Philippines –

President Aquino knows who the protector of corruption in the military is but is leaving it to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to build a strong case and ensure a successful prosecution.

“I have my ideas but I am the Chief Executive, I execute the laws of the land, and part and parcel of that is you do not bring accusations without the corresponding evidence already in hand,” Aquino told Palace reporters in a chance interview.

“It will be up to the secretary of justice and other members of the legal team to determine what cases can be filed and should be filed, and then in what sequence we should be filing them to afford the maximum chances of conviction so that these things will not be repeated,” he maintained.

“Once we are ready, it will be the DOJ that will be at the forefront of filing the necessary cases,” he said.

  95. Tama ka diyan, jug. Rabusa’s first testimnoy said it was Gen. Danny Lim’s group (whatever group it was) that was convincing him to come out in the open. He claims the decision to testify was a last-minute one since only two days earlier, he was asked by Reyes to coach him on how to answer some of the questions and he did and even got a P10,000 tip from Reyes.

Senator Trillanes was being true to the values he CORRECTLY learned from PMA:

This for the reader who won’t bother clicking on the PMA Motto Link:

INTEGRITY is a man’s delicate asset. It is hard to keep it untarnished in a world that seethes with profligate vices and degenerate crimes. Yet if he can keep it unstained inspite of the malignant forces of evil, he has passed man’s greatest ordeal.

It is needless to theorize, it is superfluous to expostulate on the advisability of possessing an integrity that defies reproach. What does it profit a man if he has the whole world trampled under his iron heels but is a moral wreck? The military profession is one profession that demands an extremely high degree of integrity.

A man of low morals and weak principles unindoctrinated in the rules of upright living and good conduct is a hateful pest that is unwanted in the army and in society as a whole. We hear of antrocious crimes committed by unprincipled soldiers in time of war. Crimes of unfold vulgarity and meanness that we blush when we hear of them.

Those soldiers had courage; they had loyalty. But they lacked that one vital virtue: INTEGRITY. In the absence of this manly quality, they became a curse of humanity instead of professed protectors of the weak and the defenseless. Such is the importance of integrity in men who live by the sword.

LOYALTY, however, does not contenance blind obedience. It does not approve of obnoxious officiousness.

Loyalty – yes, but not fawning and cringing servility. It is loyalty that is wise and discreet, not enslaving and debasing.

Actually, Trillanes has been consistent with his statements.

He never said Reyes was the powerful person Gen. Garcia is fronting for. He said Reyes is one of the principals of Garcia and Ligot, as testified to by Col. Rabusa. It was only some members of the media, particularly the Inquirer, who said that it was Reyes.

Also, he never retracted what he said about Reyes. He clarified that Reyes was not the powerful person (i.e., the mastermind) he was referring to because he never said that in the first place. He tried to explain that he said Reyes is one of the principals (and not the mastermind) apparently because Reyes was the Secretary of Defense at that time and because Col. Rabusa has in fact testified that he received money from Garcia and Rabusa. However, the media particularly the Inquirer made it appear that he retracted his previous statement (and even elicited Mrs. Garcia’s reaction to the alleged retraction).

Kaya nagkakaloko loko, the media, particularly the Inquirer always tries to spin whatever he says to come up with a more controversial statement rather than just report on what he is actually saying.

This again happened with his statement regarding the AFP fund mess. He was asked by a reporter if he thought the controversy could lead to the palace (meaning GMA). I remember his answer distinctly… He said: That is not far fetched… We will bring this to wherever the evidence will lead to! He was merely responding to the question of a reporter and merely spoke about the possibility that the mess could lead all the way to Malacancang. Yet when it was reported in the papers, it was made to appear that he already named Arroyo. Hence, the response from Arroyo’s vultures.

You have to understand… Trillanes also has to be very careful. He cannot just make baseless allegations which he cannot back up with solid evidence. Otherwise, as JPE said, he is exposing himself to possible disciplinary action.

Huwag lang po tayong mainip… Remember that session only opened last January 17… That means Trillanes has been in the Senate for barely a month now. I have it on good authority that he is gathering evidence and bidding his time and he will name names when he is ready to back it up with solid, incontrovertible evidence. Let’s cut the guy some slack… Kararating Lang niya sa Senado from detention… Darating din tayo doon!

  112. Plaridel, actually, that was his debut on the floor. If I’m not mistaken, his amnesty application had just been approved by Noynoy that same day.

    You are right Tounge T!

I remember now, that was the day of the first Senate hearing on the Garcia plea bargain was the day he took his oath of allegiance before Sec. Gazmin of the DND, the final act before his amnesty application was considered approved. He actually came in with his guns blazing!

Actually, in fairness to Trillanes, I saw the video of that first Senate hearing and he was actually very restrained and very courteous when he asked Gen. Reyes his questions about his role in the release of funds in the AFP. He calmly asked his questions and repeatedly address Gen. Reyes as Sir, apparently in recognition of the fact that he was a senior of his at the PMA.

It was only when Reyes tried to take over the proceedings by insisting on cross examining Rabusa after Rabusa’s pabaon and allowance testimony that Trillanes sharply reacted because he apparently felt that Reyes was already badgering Rabusa. Also, please note that Reyes was not prevented from defending his “honor”. He was in fact allowed by the Senators to give a long monologue even after the heated exchange with Trillanes to give him a chance to defend his “honor”. It’s all in the video. Unfortunately, the networks have so edited the video to emphasize the “sound bites” and made it appear that Reyes was treated badly and was not allowed to defend his honor.

Why not focus on Reyes’ obvious reaction to the senate hearing, instead of categorically denying, he wanted to grill Rabusa instead but not on the issue of his taking money but his being generous? He was trying to say Rabusa was an ingrate so it seems? and most in the media didn’t pick up on this? Instead they pick up on the “disrespectful” young, arrogant senator? Personalan na ba to?

  134. PMA alumni: Don’t generalize, we’re not all corrupt

MANILA, Philippines – Alarmed over the allegations of corruption in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as exposed by Ret. Col. George Rabusa, the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association (PMAAA) came out with a manifesto of support for the on-going investigation of the House and the Senate on the allegations of corruption in the military.

In their manifesto, they also said that they are supporting the initiatives of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of National Defense (DND) to create fact-finding and investigating bodies to address their concerns.

They also affirmed their continued support for the AFP leadership. and called on fellow PMA graduates to remain true and loyal to their sworn duties to the Filipino people and Constitution.

Sana ay naiisip ng SC members and limitasyon ng paghalik nila sa mabahong pwet ni Gloria or else they will “have no reputation to protect” also pareho ni Reyes.

Thanks Ellen. Now I understand the position of Trillianes on Angie Reyes. If I were in Sonny’s shoes, I would have done worse sa galit ko.

No wonder Sonny was so passionate in getting to the bottom of the corruption issues in the AFP. Angie probably thought that Trillianes was still the subordinate who was in jail all these time. He was wrong!

‘Military converted P179-B fund under GMA’
By Jess Diaz (The Philippine Star) Updated February 15, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (131)

MANILA, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) might have “converted” into slush funds a total of P179.4 billion during the Arroyo administration, Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Colmenares said yesterday.

Colmenares tried to link former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, now a congresswoman representing Pampanga’s second district, to these supposed conversions.

“Where did all this money go, and in all those years, did GMA know nothing about it?” he asked.

Citing figures taken from the annual budgets between 2002 and 2010, Colmenares said the P179.4 billion represents excess appropriations for salaries given by Congress to the AFP-Department of National Defense (DND).

He said the legislature appropriated a total of P343.4 billion for “personal services” or PS (the budget language for salaries), while total compensation requests by the DND-AFP amounted to slightly over P164 billion.

MIKEY ARROYO is gleeful and taunts Antonio Trillanes. “Why don’t they just proceed with their investigation and see where it leads to? If Trillanes has suspicions that he can substantiate with concrete evidence, he should air that at the Senate investigation which, lest it be forgotten, is in aid of legislation. (Trillanes should remember that) the great power of parliamentary immunity comes with parliamentary courtesy.”

These remarks were a reaction to Trillanes saying last week that the Senate inquiry into Garcia’s case could go as high up as Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. This was the younger Arroyo’s idea of bidding a sarcastic “Good luck.”

Well, at the very least Mikey Arroyo would be better advised to avoid making references to the nature of legislative proceedings, or the proper conduct of legislators. Lest it be forgotten, he has become a congressman only in aid of stupidity or avidity: Only a stupid or greedy court can possibly find his credentials to represent this country’s security guards solid as a rock.

Although many of the oral stories are credible, they are not backed up by documentary evidence. That’s the problem of Trillanes.

That’s why I’m suspicious with the challenge of Reyes to Trillanes to name “the powerful person” behind Garcia.

I suspect it was a trap which Trillanes wisely didn’t fall.

  159. tt,

  160. From an AFP(ret)WoPP (WithOut Pasalubong o Pabaon)

Certain disturbing aspects of the military honors given to the late Sec. Reyes:

    1. A soldier who committed suicide is not given military honors. AFP spokesman said “he was no longer in active service..” Who made the decision to waive this gray area?

    2. A soldier’s widow gets 1/2 of the her late husband’s monthly pension; widow of a pensioner who killed self is not entitled to it. That means she gets nothing. If a pension can be denied under the circumtance, why not the military honors?

3.As per our experience when our mistah John Francis Velasco died, G1, PA said that the deceased being a retiree, HPA would only provide a
2-man detail for the vigil and the usual honors during burial. All others, expenses whatever, have to be shouldered by the family.

    4. According to newsreports, Reyes was buried in the dignitary section of LNMB and given 21-gun salute. If this was the case, the department (DOE) he last served should have handled all activities- not the AFP. And, the 21-gun salute? Was he the real head of state in the last decade?

    5. And so, the questions:
-where did the AFP charge the expenses- which judging from the TV coverage would have easily cost millions of pesos, from vigil to interment? From PCDA (Provision for Command-Directed Activities) again?
(Just thinking, could this “easy” access to funds have inspired the funds managers to develop a mindset that would led to the creation of so-called “culture of corruption”?)
-If the decision for the spectacle was not covered by regulations, or worse, a violation, shouldn’t somebody reimburse the AFP?
-or, another hearing-in-aid-of-legislation should be called to probe this unusual case of “pabaon”?

  161. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Reading the above #173, my blood boileth over again.

  162. The thing that disturbed me was not so much getting buried in the Libingan but the 40-gun salute in total. You do that to a hero or a head of state but not one who committed suicide because he had been denounced as a military thief.

Whoever thinks “cavalier” solely refers to graduates of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) must know that as noun, the archaic definition refers to “foot soldiers, horseman, equestrian and cavalryman.” As adjective it means “offhand, indifferent, casual, dismissive, insouciant, unconcerned; supercilious, patronizing, condescending, disdainful, scornful, contemptuous; informal couldn’t-care-less, and devil-may-care.” All of which exactly describe Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV’s upperclassmen at the PMA.

Consider the text messages going around indicting Trillanes, the likes of “Let us not forget the uncavalier act of Antonio Trillanes that humiliated and shamed Cav Reyes to the public. When the proper time comes, let every cavalier judge Antonio Trillanes and put him where he rightfully belongs. The time of reckoning is about to come.”

There’s also supposed to be a plan to embarrass him further with a streamer in an upcoming PMA reunion, to read: “Let’s boycott Trillanes in the next national election. Be a wise voter!”

To clarify, I haven’t received any of these, but newspaper columnist Ellen Tordesillas has, and she’s dutifully reported so in her famous blog, http://www.ellentordesillas.com, where she gets as much as 400 reactions to a good number of her posts.

There have been scores of anti-Trillanes “demolition texts,” says the feisty Tordesillas, which were first passed around after the Oakwood incident in 2003, revived during the senatorial campaign in 2007 and now again, in a fresh wave of efforts to put the man down.

It’s as if there’s a group tasked only to wait for Trillanes to make a mistake, and when he does, if indeed he does, the shadowy forces simply whip out their cell phones and go into attack mode. It’s no coincidence that the same texts are repeatedly resurrected, malinaw nang may nagtatago niyan, nag-iimbak, para ilabas na lang muli kung kailangan.

Let us make this clear once and for all, especially for those who don’t understand the issue enough but make nasty and wild allegations and accusations, just so their comments are seen and published in this thread. Kaunting analysis naman everyone, is that too much to ask?

Let’s put everything in their proper perspective. Reyes has not been investigated much less convicted of the crime he is being unfairly accused of. He was there at the hearing as a RESOURCE PERSON and it’s obvious that Trillanes and Estrada have axes to grind with him, that’s why they grilled, shamed and embarrassed him. He took his own life, for reasons he alone is certain about. We can only speculate. The AFP is a corrupt system and Reyes’ sin perhaps is his failure to stop it and eventually became a beneficiary of the system too. But Reyes is also soldier who rose from the ranks to become the Chief of Staff, Secretary of National Defense, Energy and Environment. He has served this country well, more than you and I can ever do in our lifetime. Well, far more than Trillanes can and will ever do.

Consider this. Trillanes is a soldier as well, a junior at that. He has wrought this country more havoc and damage than you and I can ever do in our lifetime (except maybe those people who vote for people like him). His military adventurisms in Oakwood and Manila Peninsula, both located in Makati, the country’s financial capital, has scared a lot of foreign investors and tourists, weakened the peso, spooked the stock market, embarrassed our country in the international community, and sent the Philippine economy in a tailspin enough to erase whatever economic gains we have achieved for several years. He is a mutineer, a traitor, an economic saboteur. Compare this to Reyes, Trillanes admitted guilt for all these when he applied for amnesty under Pnoy’s government, which is a requisite of the program. Also, how could you explain Trillanes being one of the biggest spender in the Senate while he was in jail? I can’t imagine how humongous his expenditures will be especially now that he is free. Pathetic!

  168. go antonio go antonio

“Honor code violators do not deserve respect,” Senator Trillanes said.

However, Reyes was not yet guilty of the crime. The investigation has not yet concluded. It is still on-going. Hindi ba “innocent until proven guilty?” Actually Reyes was not yet a suspect when Trillanes grilled him in the hearing. He was invited as a guest. Why? Because although Reyes was the chief of staff, they still need to prove that he benefited from the pabaon system. Of course Rabusa’s claim was presented to the hearing but like the people he implicated, his claims are also under investigation. You can’t just say that he did this and that. It must be PROVEN BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT.

And since Trillanes tend to ignore that, then he is in all practicality the one who is a real violator of that Honor Code. He insulted and disrespected an upperclassman who is not yet guilty of the crime he is being accused of and Trillanes revels in that. He is like a fly on the back of a carabao who thinks he is better than the carabao because he is standing on its back.

So before you people say anything, keep in mind. Demand ABSOLUTE PROOF first. We all want to see who’s the REAL mastermind. If we give in to a trial of publicity, the more we won’t know the identities of the true masterminds of this crime.

  169. parasabayan parasabayan

Go Antonio or one of the horsies and maybe Luli, no need to even probe Angie. His assets and lifestyle speak for itself. To be able to travel 48 times to the US, US lang yan, is not cheap.

The bottom line is, why did he kill himself? Out of shame and to protect his family and the culprits. End of the story.

At least Trillianes is never a coward! he languished in incarceration for 7 long years! If Angie was made of the same fiber as Trillianes, he could have faced his accusers squarely. Instead, he would rather die and not be answerable for any wrong doing. To top it all, I am so disgusted that he was buried in the libingan ng mga bayani. Shame shame for the family of a perceived thief to even have the audacity to accept the offer to have Angie buried amongst the heroes.

  170. Reyes’ story is a typical “crook gets away, starts a new life swimming in a sea of respectability, the past catches up with him, he cannot take the humiliation and shame, so he ends his life instead.”
Insulting and disrespecting an upperclassman is not a violation of the honor code, please google it.
It says “we the cadets do not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate others who do so.”
Reyes practically violated all aspects of it, read his last words, he practically admitted “accepting certain aspects of corruption…”
What absolute proof are you asking for, the dead guy just admitted it already?
The truth, even if in a trial by publicity, will come out, and no amount of trial by publicity will condemn an innocent man. Take a look at Erap, that was practically trial by publicity?

“Trillanes is a soldier as well, a junior at that. He is a mutineer, a traitor, an economic saboteur” – can you even quantify this? are you sure?
contrast that to the Honasan led coups.

And what fly on a carabao? He’s an elected senator, he practically wields the power given to him by 11 million people, Reyes? he wielded the power given to him by a corrupt president as a reward for selling out his boss and he was well rewarded for it.

“But Reyes is also soldier who rose from the ranks to become the Chief of Staff, Secretary of National Defense, Energy and Environment. He has served this country well, more than you and I can ever do in our lifetime.”
Wrong! Well, speak for yourself, maybe you haven’t done much yourself. If making an hinest living as opposed to groveling and allowing himself to be used as a tool of oppression and corruption is a major major achievement for you, well, again, speak for yourself as not all of us subscribe to that.

Reyes practically violated all aspects of the honor code except “we the cadets.” and if you recall, even when Lacson used the “alright” on him he didn’t prescribe to it as for him it applies only to the cadet corps. The loser was the fly on the carabao all this time, problem is he believed he was above the law, too bad for him as its long arm will always get its man, eventually. His is a tragic story that proves crime doesn’t pay, and an stories go, the bad guys always lose…not exactly their lives though…

In a nutshell, what happened to Reyes could be summed up in these words “it could’nt have happened to a nicer guy.”

Tapos humihirit pa ng another $ 5000 pang- shopping. Yan ba ang may business? Baka monkey business. As far as I am concerned, when Angie killed himself, that was a confirmation of a wrong doing. Hindi na kailangan ng legal means to find out if he erred or not. With what he did, killing himself, showed his desperation or guilt. Only desperate people kill themselves, yung mga kriminal na hindi na nila kaya yung kanilang pinaggagagawa, drug addicts, depressed people with very low esteem and the like. That my friend is more than a verdict. Kahit naman wala na siya, the probe continues and in the end, we will still know who the real culprits are and believe me, he will still be one of them!

  176. parasabayan parasabayan

That is where Trillianes spent most of his money in senate. Hindi lang siya katulad ng iba dyan (Joker Arroyo for one) who seem just content sitting only at hearings and never bothered to see his constituents. Nakakulong man si Trillianes, he had his men roaming around looking at what he could do to help his fellow men. I saw his efforts with my own two eyes, first hand experience. By the wya, inspite of this incarceration, he was able to pass bills, a few of which were made into law. Nagtatratrabaho si Trillianes. I can not say the same for the other senators.

Go Antonio, obviously you were not watching the hearings. I watched the hearings. Rabusa had kept records of all his allegations. With Col Sonny Lim, who is still in active duty who was a witness to all the cash outflow, there were even more damning evidences against those who stole from the coffers.

@parasabayan. hahahaha. maybe ur watching too much movies.wat u wer saying about the weapons used by magdalos is comically insane.maybe until now u still believe that fairies exist.hahaha. soldiers are not allowed to carry their weapons outside from their barracks without authorization from their CO, and if they managed to stole it from the armory they could have used a vehicle to transport those weapons which means that someone provided the logistical support not unless we’re goin to believe ur preposterous childish idea. Wake up my child santa is not real!hahahaha

If the soldiers are deployed in the field, they can carry their firearms with them.

Maybe their CO was with them too!

there is no threat that warrants deployment of soldiers in the field during that day. Ur senator trillianes is not tarnished as he claims to be, maybe some influential person with vested interest is behind him, maybe Erap or Ping.
