Willing Willie case affirms power of social media

Online outrage over child abuse
Once again, social media in the Philippines proved its growing power when the high-flying host Willie Revillame announced last Friday that his show,Willing Willie, would be off the air for two weeks starting Monday, April 11.

Revillame sounded doubtful if the six-month old early evening show that for a while threatened to upset the public’s news viewing habits would continue.

Said to be the highest paid TV personality, reportedly earning the mind-boggling amount of P3 million a day, even his future in showbusiness is now in peril.

Whereas before he was the one dictating the terms, his statements betray an uncertain relationship with the management of his latest home studio, telecom giant Manny Pangilinan’s ABC TV5.

He might have been speaking of his showbiz career when he said, “At kung babalik man kami, may panibago pong pagasa ulit,” he said.

It is incredible that it took only a frightened six- year old who had to resort to dirty dancing to earn P10,000, to bring down Revillame, something that ABS-CBN, the media powerhouse, has failed to do.

With a lot of help from social media.

The incident where Willie was goading a crying Jan-Jan to continue with his “macho dancing” while many on the audience were laughing happened March 12. It didn’t immediately arouse outrage until there were articles written denouncing the obscenity of the episode. The articles that brought the video to my attention San Francisco-based Benjamin Pimente’s Willing Willie and the boy who wouldn’t smile” and the letter to Jan-Jan of Cathy S. Babao I saw in Facebook.

I guess the delayed reaction was due to the fact that the outspoken middle-class were not Willing Willie’s audience. Willie’s following are from the financially-deprived masa.

A Facebook page “Para kay Jan-jan (Shame on you Willie Revillame)” was created by Froilan Grate that consolidated all efforts to put pressure on Revillame, TV5 and advertisers. Another group, Blogwatch, managed by momblogger, Noemi Lardizabal-Dado,dutifully followed developments in the Jan-Jan case.

The social media campaign reached Social Services Secretary Dinky Soliman and Etta Rosales, chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights who both issued statements saying Revillame committed child abuse which is punishable under the law. Rosales said the CHR will investigate the incident.

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board started its investigation too. It was supposed to decide last Thursday and sources the committee was inclined to suspend the show but they were pre-empted by the accusations of the lawyers of TV5 and Revillame of bias. MTRCB Chair Grace Poe-Llamanzares had to replace the members of the committee. They are supposed to resume the hearing today.

Dennis Garcia’s FB wall came out with creative, compelling messages rallying the public to express outrage over the TV episode and the arrogance of Revillame. Garcia, an advertising executive, targeted the advertisers’ conscience.
The first to respond was Jollibee’s Mang Inasal, followed by Procter and Gamble, Del Monte, Cebuana Lhuillier, CDO, Unilever and Nutri-Asia.

Rather than wait for the sanctions of MTRCB and the CHR, Revillame last Friday announced the self-imposed suspension of Willing-Willie.

The last time an online outrage put someone in power in the defensive was when then Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman figured in a mauling incident in a golf course. The cabinet secretary had to issue a plea in the traditional media to bloggers and social media denizens to “please stop maligning” him.

Revillame at first said he was not affected by tweets critical of him. But in what could be his goodbye speech last Friday, he threatened bloggers and colleagues in showbusiness who criticized me in Twitter that he might bring them to court.

That’s a recognition of the power of social media.

  3. Willie Revillame said if advertisers would continue to abandon his show, he’d seek the help of network president Ray Espinosa and network boss Manny V. Pangilinan, “even if we lose profit.” To which MVP said, “Bawiin mo ‘yan!”

“In the service of the Filipino” tayo di ba?

  6. He should not brag about what he gives to the poor. 3M a day? Madadala ba niya sa langit yun? Maiiwan din naman niya sana sa out of school youth na lang niya ibinigay.

P3 million a day for a rubbish show?

  9. Mike Mike

    Bye Willy! 😛

  10. I read that “Willing Willie” earns P9 million to P10 million daily. But I imagine with most of the advertisers gone, they won’t have enough even for Willie’s talent fee.

Shalani is paid P1 million a month. And she is soooo boring.

If ever ituloy ng TV5 ang show after 2 weeks of hiatus ang show ni Willy, even if without most of its major sponsors.

Ms. Ellen, 1M for being boring? Sana ako nalang kinuha, kahit half of 1M. Mas boring kaya ako kaysa kay EX-Presidential GF. 😛

This Jan Jan incident is not about Willie, really. This is a barometer of our culture that went all the way down the gutter. To these people who probably never even saw Lea Salonga sing on Broadway, Willie is a “face” of entertainment. This show is what they look forward to even if they have to watch it next door coz they can not afford to have their own TV set. We can condemn Willie all we want, but the bottomline is, another show like Willing Willie will crop out and we will have another Jan jan perform a show.

These “high class” entertainers should bring a wholesome show to schools and community centers if they want these poor people to distinguish between a “quality” show and one like Willie’s. This kind of a show is what the poor people ca relate to.

I never even watched a single show of Willie except I saw him in person during the 2010 campaign.

  15. parasabayan parasabayan

The reason why Willie gets a very high pay, yan ang gustong panoorin ng mga mahihirap. If we want our viewers to be more discerning, we should offer them alternatives. My mom watched the “Eat Bulaga” everyday in the last so many years but now she would rather pray the rosary than watch this show. She got bored maybe.

  16. parasabayan parasabayan

I would like the screening body to not just single out the Willing Willie. This body should also screen all other shows where the sexy dancers are showing all their boobs and assess and those shows uttering profanities.

  17. parasabayan parasabayan

I hope that our outrage now on what happened to Jan jan is a wake up call for the producers of these shows to start crafting shows which will engage the poor people but at the same time not bore them.

For a host so disgustingly obnoxious and the “products” he sells so offensively rotten, I fail to comprehend why he deserves such outrageous compensation. Talent ? What talent ? This sorry excuse for a human being doesn’t have it at all !! Bastos——–Oo !! Pero talent ? Manigas !!!

I think it is very unfair to judge individual for something that happened that it is not violating of any kind of “ABUSE”. This accusation just start when someone wants to get back @ Willie Revillame. Why can’t everyone get along and worry about what is going on around the world, instead of trying to destroy someone who have good intention of helping unfortunate people. This only start when the child Jan-Jan dance the Macho Dance,I did not see any kind of Child abuse as the child choose to dance the way he did. I also understand that Willie put him on the pedestal and continue dancing. But that is not mean of abuse, the child Aunt is in the audience and she have the right to stop it, but she did not. I am not depending Willie for all these incident as people who participate are to be blame too for their action. Why mostly people are just picking on one show? I have watched some other show like Eat Bulaga why no one complaining about their action. Maybe just because ABS/CBN,so for some of us, we should be fair before we judge and for some I know will not agree what I post, this is me I am not affiliated to anyone nor friend of any in the show business in the Philippines. I just feel that it is not right to judge someone falsely. ABS/CBN and the rest of the Filipino people who wants Willie Revillame out of the limelight should understand that we only live once. I am also a native of the Philippines and been here in the United States for 36 years, and a grandmother of beautiful grandchildren. And I know what happened on March 12,2011 is nowhere of seeing child abuse. So, let us try to see the good outcome and get along to one another instead of falsely accusing someone no matter who it is.

God bless all of us, let us have some peace, and let us help to make our country in one instead of pointing finger.

  20. ipaglaban_mo ipaglaban_mo

Agree ako kay parasabayan. This should not be about Willie only. Filipino culture was somewhat influenced by shows like this. When I went home to the Phils, I was shocked that my 6 & 8 year old nieces were dancing imitating a sexy dancer in front of us. What the heck? Maybe it looks cute to some people, but it is disgusting to most. I think their parents are partly to blame by it. Kids have no business a-gogo dancing and yet family/society lets them…

  21. abc abc

  22. I know of an OFW in the UK who will be relieved to hear this news, he lost his mother in the Ultra stampede some time ago. He’s a doctor, he said his mother didn’t need to go there, apparently she went with neighbors.

Hopefully the networks will see this as a wake up call, that they need to have proper guidelines in this area, and not everything goes just to make money.

People must see the real lessons here, lessons that Willing Willie and similar shows have been effectively been teaching the people – that we can get away with breaking the rules, rules of decency, morality, and even lose our dignity because we need to make money. That those who have money to throw around can treat others cruely because they need it badly enough and will do anything. That this brand of humor is without taste and will only do more harm than good.

  23. Its a sad sight when we see someone dangle some money at a desperate man makes himn earn it by making others “happy” seeing him humiliate himself and then thanks the giver. “Wala lang, ang hirap talaga kumita.” or “Lahat naman gumagawa nito.”
In the same way we snicker at polio victims when they walk, or the cross-eyed, or the ones with “putok” in our office, or people who stammer, or the autistic – thats the “unholy glee” all of us possess that these people seemed to have tapped into and exploited for money.
Everyone of us has the potential of extremed cruelty to our fellow man, its the rules of decency, civility and humanity that restrains us vrom doing so – but shows like this brings out his monster in all of us. Everything for a laugh.

  24. rose rose

jug: it is a sad sight indeed..noong araw pagdating ng barko sa port sa Zamboanga or Davao magtapon ka ng pera and the children would dive for it to the enjoyment of the passengers…at doon sa Baguio sa Mines View Park magtapon ka ng pera young children would rush down that treacherous path to run for the money..at tuwang tuwa ang mga tao…naging enjoyment natin ang kahirapan ng mga kabataan..and to that I say..mea culpa, mea culpa! mea maxima culpa! it was a sadistic enjoyment…I have not been to Baguio nor Zamboanga since I left the Phil..I hope wala ng mga ganitong enjoyment…

  25. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Yes, this TV episode has gone beyong Willie and ABC TV5. It should now be seen from a wider perspective. We should now raise the level of our attention on the deficiencies of our local TV networks.

They have been found wanting. For so long we just laid back and allowed them to do whatever they wanted. But yes, a little boy and consumer power is going to hopefully bring reforms in TV values and programming.

This includes reforms in the advertising industry as well. It is the advertisers who actually ultimately are the supporters of such inane TV programs. It is clear that the advertising industry has also spawned their own Willie monsters inside.

  26. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

The TV newscasts should be the next focus of reforms. Too much tear jerking, too much gore, too much chismis.

And why the hell do news readers have to shout the news at us? Newscasts here are so shrill. Grating to the ears.

And what happened to the modulated “radio voice” of the past? Wala na. Even Ted Failon who has one of the best radio voices around no longer makes good use of that voice. He shouts and shrieks the news like all the rest. Naiipit ang boses. Sayang.

  27. Mike Mike

To those who still can’t get it, it’s not about “network” rivalry or to get back at Willie. Here is part of the anti-child abuse law/ R.A. 7610:

“(2) Any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of a child as a human being;”

The child may think what he did (macho dancing) is OK, but the parents should know what’s best for their child and not because what’s best for their bank account.

If we would follow that argument, if the kid would sing songs that have obscene and vulgar languages in the song and he thinks it’s ok to do so, should we allow him to continue singing that song?

  28. mike,
Napansin mo ba na kada na lang may mahuhuli, sini single out daw sila? trial by publicity? marami lang daw nagmamalinis? bakit daw pinag tulong tulungan siya na marami pa namang ibang gumagawa dyan?
parang ganyan din ang reaction ni Angelo Reyes and supporters, Garcia, Ligot, Gloria, Mikee, etc, ah? lahat sila parang “aping api” talaga pag nagsalita, hindi daw fair?
Ulol!

#35. Very good analysis sir. Its always the story sad to say, this kind of argument we always hear to those in the hotspot. But why do we allow the good side to triumph over the evil intentions of this people? Its because sometimes our argument are weak, we are over powered & while others don’t care at all except if their agenda is at stake. Kaya I believe it’s so important that scenario’s like this (willie, reyes, gloria, mikee, ligot’s issues, etc.) the media has a very “crucial rule” to inform the public in a balance report. The TRUTH should be given preference over “emotional feelings”. It should always be ABOVE even on a so called “Human Rights” inorder that our morals will remain intact.

  34. greenstallion greenstallion

#24. Though most of the bloggers here are unanismously on the side of child abuse against airing over the TV5 night show incident. It doesn’t mean that your opionion are not welcome here, everybody’s opinion are respected in an open mind democratic country such us ours.

But its our duty to refute, to correct opinions which is against our norms, belief, good values taught by our parents & church faith in the spirit of truth, justice, etc.

The issue here is Willing Willie Show committed mistakes for not stopping Jan2x indecent performance that we adults truly understand the implications of it. Why we would look to other networks when they are not the issue here? Did ABS-CBN, GMA7 have a present shows similar to what Jan2x did? Can you cite in particular instance that its violated the child’s wellfare in this period of time? Its just so happened that the show of Willie were highlightened because of the program lack of control.

So I think this issue deserves our attention, we are not singled out the other stations. They have their own flaws too. That’s why we challenge them to create a decent show always. Its a lesson to all of us that we should not patronize these kind of “garbage values” that keep on influencing the mind of our people.
