Noynoy vows review of Magdalo soldiers’ cases

Although President-elect Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III believes that detained Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and the other Magdalo soldiers involved in the 2003 Oakwood mutiny and the 2007 Manila Peninsula Siege are not guilty of coup d’etat and rebellion, he cannot promise them executive clemency.

A known sympathizer of Trillanes and ally of Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, Aquino said he will respect the proceedings against the Magdalo soldiers at the Makati Regional Trial Court.

“The court is a co-equal branch of the executive. As such, mere executive action is not enough to solve the case. There is a process that has to be undergone, which we should respect,” he said in reaction to the suggestion of Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel for the next administration to intervene in the Magdalo soldiers’ cases.

These past years while Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, the career foreign service officers kept quiet about his boo-boos because one can’t separate him from the department and from the government. His embarrassing foul-ups were also their embarrassment.

In regional meeting, reporters covering the events wondered why the Philippines is represented by senior officials in morning ministerial meetings. It’s basic courtesy to other ministers that a country sends someone of the same rank in those meetings. But Romulo, even if he is in that event, wakes up late in the morning, he skips morning meetings.

A DFA source also said that the Philippines conducts few side bilateral meetings during Asean and APEC meetings because Romulo does not make himself available. “No foreign minister would agree to have a bilateral with a Philippine senior official,” said a foreign official, who asked not to be named for obvious reason. But for those trips, Romulo collects expensive per diem.

Former telecommunication mogul Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco was the biggest contributor to the candidacy of his nephew, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, with a donation of P100 million.

Cojuangco, a cousin of Aquino’s mother the late President Corazon Aquino, was president of Philippine Long Distance Co. before he sold the family holdings to the First Pacific Group represented by Manny Pangilinan.

He was also president and chief executive officer ABC-5/TV5 before it was recently bought also by Pangilinan.

President-elect Aquino listed 96 people who gave cash donations ranging from P50,000 to P100 million.

Nakahabol pa rin ako sa buntot ng summer dito sa aming baryo sa Guisijan sa Laua-an, Antique.

Dahil sa aming pagsusubay sa eleksyon at canvassing ng mga boto, hindi ako nagkapanahon magbakasyon na siyang aking ginagawa tuwing tag-init. Mabuti naman at naproklama na ang nanalong kandidato sa president at bise-presidente na walang gulo. Kaya sabi ko, bakasyon muna sa aming baryo.

Natutuwa naman akong marami pang bulaklak ang aming tanim na mabangong rosal.
Paborito ko ang rosal. Marahil dahil dala nya ang ala-ala nang bata pa kami at yan ang aming ina-alay sa birheng Maria.

Performance: June 15 and 17 at PETA Theater in Quezon City

Paris-based dancer and choreographer Lin Yuan Shang brings his dance company Eolipile to the Philippines to perform two pieces known for their hypnotic display of movement and energy: ‘Kung Fu Dancing’ and ‘Kung Fu Commandos’.

Through the support of the French Embassy, Alliance Française and KLM, Filipino theatergoers can now witness a rare Kung Fu and contemporary fusion as the French company performs at the PETA Theater Center this June.

The Eolipile Dance Company, whose name comes from “Aeolus” – God of the Winds, was founded in 1996 by Taiwanborn, Lin Yuan Shang who had attended the Beijing Opera School, before expanding his dance knowledge in France with founder of Théâtre du Soleil Ariane Mnouchkine and choreographer Maguy Marin.

Take it from him.

US President Barack Obama on Wednesday night phoned President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to congratulate him. In addition, Obama said he is ready to offer Aquino his personal advice on how to quit smoking once he decides to end the habit.

Aquino, at a press conference at his residence on Times Street in Quezon City, said: “At some point I attempted some humor. ‘Mr. President, I understand we have the same issue with smoking.’ Sabi niya, ‘Well I quit that already. I quit, it’s your sole problem. I’m ready to offer advice.’”

He said Obama told him that he will have his advice sent to him “at the appropriate time, when you are ready.”

Obama made the call to Aquino’s mobile phone shortly past 9 p.m. Wednesday. The conversation lasted for about 20 minutes.

The young pianist who shows up for pictorial looks fit and relaxed sporting a tan he got from swimming – one of the few things he does outside of piano practice.

Outside of music, he indulges in a few things to recharge. “I usually go to the movies with my friends, cook, walk in the park, go to the beach, or hit the gym.,” he says.

Now a holder of a Master of Music in Piano Performance degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music under Antonio Pompa-Baldi, (a silver medalist at the 2001 Van Cliburn Competition), Salonga is presently continuing his studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music as an artist diploma candidate.

He reveals a school routine crammed with programmed activities. “When I was still doing a degree program, my days are always fully booked with classes with very little time to focus on my practicing. I value any free time I can get knowing that those are just the only time I can practice for that day. My schedule now is more flexible . I start my day going to the gym, practice three hours in the afternoon and three hours at night. There is definitely more time to refresh my mind and body.”

No DILG for Binay

Vice-president elect-Jejomar Binay has set aside subtlety and made known his desire to be appointed secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

“If you go by my experience and expertise, if the incoming President would allow, I would like to be appointed secretary of the DILG, “Binay said yesterday after their proclamation as winners of the May 10 elections.

I seriously doubt Binay will get his wish, even if many in Aquino’s inner circle were his supporters . I understand it’s Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo who will be given this politically strategic position.
