Esperon pelted with eggs at UP

This is Malaya’s account of the egg-and- mud-pelting of AFP Chief Hermogenes Esperon at UP Friday.

What happened to Esperon is a form of “social boycott” that the citizens of this country, outraged by Gloria Arroyo and her minion’s blatant trampling of our democracy, are resorting to. It happened to Gloria Arroyo at the Cavite State University when Maria Theresa Pangilinan booed her during the commencement exercises. It happened again at the UP-PGH when students unfurled “Oust Gloria” banner when she inaugurated the Opthalmologic Center.

Esperon, like his master, Gloria Arroyo, must must grown callous or have become out-of-touch of the people that they thought with their powers they can run roughshod on the people’s sensitivities.

They are mistaken. People need to protect their “space”. As ordinary citizens know that we have no control on the situation in many parts of the country but there are places and environment that we inhabit and nurture because that is where we find validation the values we live by. We will not allow that to be invaded and violated by the presence of people who mock the values we cherish like Arroyo and Esperon.

U.P. Professor Randy David earlier elaborated on the concept of “social boycott”:
“What may begin as misgivings could evolve into an explicit resolve to avoid contact with persons who actively work for or who callously profit from the favors dispensed by this immoral and repressive regime. Such avoidance can ripen into open ostracism. This is the extreme form of assertion of the power of a moral community. Its effect is social isolation. It is the consumers’ boycott in the realm of social relations.”

Let’s do this more often.

ARMED Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon yesterday was hit twice in the back by eggs hurled by protesters at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, where he spoke at a forum organized by political science students.

His pants were also soiled with mud thrown by the student-protesters numbering about 20.

Esperon was attacked around 5 p.m. as he was going out of the Pulungang Claro M. Recto, where the forum organized by the Association of Political Science Majors was held, said Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, chief of the AFP’s public information office.

The forum’s theme was “Untamed conflict and arrested development: Finding a way out of the vicious cycle.”

A video taken by military cameramen showed Esperon, all smiles, waving to the protesters as he got out of the hall.

The protesters were chanting “pasistang militar, singilin, singilin!” when they threw eggs and mud at Esperon.

Esperon’s escorts whisked him out of the area. They did not take any action or draw any firearm against the protesters, Bacarro said.

“Siguro yung mga nambato galit sa akin dahil hindi ako nagku-coup at ang AFP,” Bacarro quoted Esperon as saying in jest.

Esperon was tagged by Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz as “the poster boy for no coups in the Philippines.”

Bacarro said the students “should not shame UP as an institution.”

He said Esperon believes that UP is a place of civility.

“They should be good students,” Bacarro said. “If it is their way of growing up, he (Esperon) can’t imagine what they’ll turn into in the future…They should have honored the spirit of the forum.”

Bacarro said the AFP chief accepted the invitation of the political science students “to discuss concerns and issues under the spirit of academic freedom.”

He said Esperon believes the organizers of the forum had no hand in the attack.

He added Esperon is not thinking of filing charges against the protesters. – Victor Reyes

Wow!!! I could have done the same thing. Now I am very proud of my alma mater.

  2. See what happens when the eyes of the word are watching. He had to refrain himself from doing something the administration will regret. Hehehe, now they are helpless against the people. Any wrong move they make would definitely hurt the pandak’s international image. They have to behave themselves from now on.

  3. You bet, Schumey, but we can’t be complacent, because we are dealing with hardboiled criminals parading as officials of the Philippine government. Over there now, breaking the law as long as you can pay may no longer be a crime, but I have been brought up to uphold the law, and where I come from breaking the law is a crime.

BTW, I’m told that JdV is now in Canada trying to sell his ChaCha, and talking about a dateline. Perhaps, Vic can update us on this fishy visit.

I wonder if this crook has been offered some fiefdom in Pangasinan and hope he will be named Duke or Earl of Lingayen! Gosh, ang ganda nga namang pakinggan! Pero tignan mo naman ang mga pagmumukha!

Yuck! Pinagtatawanan ang itsura ng mga royalty sa Japan before, pero mas masama naman yata ang mukha nitong mga copycat royalty (kuno) ng Pilipinas that Spartan says are “lahing bugaw”! 😛

I’m on a train at the moment using my laptop on the way to work. Just thought I’d peep in. Ah, the progress of communication! Over here, you can connect in fact by just going near a hook up if you have a wireless, and it’s free. A friend, who is an IT bug, told me about this new gimmick!

Bakit mga itlog lang? Dapat doon mga BATO! At least he can feel kahit konti man lang ang sakit ng mga ginagawa nila sa ating mga kababayan.
More power to the UP students! Keep up the good work!

  5. Emilio_OFW Emilio_OFW

As expected… this is an overdue expression of disgust to this AFP shithead.

    HURRAH to the UP students!

Another loose cannon .. Eltecol Bartolome Bacarro is talking nonsense…

People are expressing their anger… can’t you feel it?

  6. GOTCHA!
Now, THAT my dears, is what I call GOOD NEWS!

Why do I find myself smiling?
As if nabuksan ang langit at suminag ang liwanag
kahit na maulap ang panahon dito…
    hmmm?

I love UP and proud to belong! Keep up the good work, guys!

  7. Sayang ang itlog! 😀
Better still, those from the murky river [to quote ystakei-san] by the Pasig! 🙄

    Little Things vs Big Things

There are lessons to be learned from Mother Nature. She’s a great teacher and guide on how things operate in the universe. Here are nature’s lessons on patience, perseverance and determination. Indeed, little things can bring down big things.

 The little beaver can fell a tree down.
 The quiet termites can chew a house down.
 A hive of bees can send the mighty lion scampering.
 Waves can reduce rocks and boulders to sand.

The incessant tireless determined efforts of anti-Gloria individuals and groups both here and abroad are beginning to bear fruit. The battle has, indeed, already moved to international levels where Gloria’s power and influence are zilch. This is the battlefront she is most afraid of.

Aside from the Amnesty International, there are now lawyers’ groups based in the United States who have called on the US Congress to conduct an investigation of the alleged use of military funds from Washington by its local counterpart for political repression in the Philippines.

Civic and labor groups based in South Korea, for their part, have called on the Arroyo administration to solve the more than 750 extra-judicial killings in the Philippines.

This is the kind of battlefront where her Ermitas, Esperons, Palparans and Gonzalezes become impotent.

The Dark Fortress of the Pasig slowly but surely is being chewed down.

Kung kayo kaya ang nasa receiving end of eggs and mud.

Nagtataka pa ba kayo kung bakit the people are not out in the streets?

Getting paid for editorializing. Kakainggit. It doesnt take much to do that, just let human nature get the best of you. Imagine, getting paid to cut people down to size.

Sus. Sigurado ba kayong UP students yung mga bumato? The pelting took place inside UP Diliman, yes, but whether the pelters were UP students is not known. For all we know, those pelters flunked the UPCAT.

  11. Cory by the sea, All:

Yehey! Panay siguro ang tangna niya!

Ah, UP Beloved, the Alma Mater dear!

  12. Bulok ba?
Lalong OKAY!

Eggs and mud throwing was little harsh, so is the killing of over 700 Activists and Journalists. AFP Cheap Hemorrhoid Assperon perhaps deserve such treatment. I guess the protesters figured that Assperon was a pain on the butt. Incident was still a misdeameanor offense if we’ve to make a comparison with illegitimate Gloria’s regime in which Assperon included. They (Gloria’s people) don’t consider eggs as a weapon or mud to show dissatisfaction, yet they’ve these people riding in motorcycles with mask shooting innocent people and matter not the collateral damages to other citizens.

Eggs and mud are good for the soul! It kinda send a message to the Arroyos that how things are.

  14. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Next time Cheap Hemorrhoid Assperon start promoting all lies about illegitimate Gloria in public forum rather than of eggs and mud reception, offer Assperon the ROPE treatment instead that will surely shut him up for eternity.

  15. norpil norpil

it appears to me even up students are polarised, since according to the reports the throwing was done not by the same students who participated in the discussions which was not even heated but lively.throwing eggs is quite normal even here in norway against extreme nationalist parties but the problem is they just become more popular.for me this guy deserve harder things than eggs, but they could be imprisoned if they have done that.so far nobody is imprisoned yet in the pinas for throwing eggs or am i wrong again.

  16. Not polarized. Never! During my college days, I would not join the rallies in front of the US Embassy not that I was afraid of being spotted and marked that my parents would worry about because they thought I was just a kid to be involved in politics. It did not mean I was not with them. There is no such thing as being polarized especially when you have friends being kidnapped and disappearing to Kingdom Come.

Some students cannot just find the time to be seen there! Please do not induce negativism in a very positive action as far as UPians are concerned. Over there, we are trained to be critical especially of a VERY corrupt government led by a criminal who thinks she is the law! Anti-establishment was the word used during my college days!!!

  17. norpil norpil

i am just reading reports from fil newspapers which says that there are those who are in the hall and those who are outside the hall where this guy tried to make contact.so there are those who are for and those who are strongly against, and those strongly against did not dare argue.this is what i call polarised.i have two brothers who graduated at up and they are also divided, one is for and one against.i do not induce negativism, just trying to argue based on the little things that drip in my small brain.to be critical is easy, it is to understand things that is difficult.

  18. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To norpil:

“to be critical is easy, it is to understand things that is difficult”

How true. That fact is lost on student activists. Yesterday’s activists are today’s stock brokers, investment bankers, members of the Establishment. Yesterday’s critics of capitalism are today’s champions of capitalism.

No doubt, if those who pelted Esperon (and almost all the posters here, except you of course), would be worse violators of civil liberties than GMA, would proclaim martial law in a heartbeat.

That’s the problem with most people, especially the youth – we only want freedom and rights, but not responsibilities.

  19. norpil norpil

anthony:i agree that some here would be worse violators of civil liberties judging from the language in use, but bear in mind that a lot use this forum to bent their anger and frustration on gma.as for capitalism, even the communists have become capitalists except for some others still on wait.

  20. Re Norpil’s “anthony:i agree that some here would be worse violators of civil liberties judging from the language in use, but bear in mind that a lot use this forum to bent their anger and frustration on gma.”

Just like what Anthony is doing here – “anger and frustration on gma (?)” or on people here. But notice than nobody calls him “hunghang”. Can’t remember anymore but isn’t that a word that means “idiots” or something similar?

I don’t recall anyone calling Anthony moron or idiot in spite of his so very personalized “insults” against people here which include me.

Ellen’s blog to my mind is one of the real last bastions existing on Philippine net on freedom of speech.

I do hope Anthony Scalia appreciates that.

  21. Yuko,

And even if the students were polarised against Esperon, what of it? Esperon is extremely lucky that he was only pelted with egg and mud.

  22. alitaptap alitaptap

It matters not whether students at UP are polarized. What matters is that the message is delivered to Esperon, loud and clear, and that will send a ripple effect to all of the poodles by ‘the murky river’.
It would actually be an anomaly if there is no polarization among UP students. The institution is the citadel of learning, and as such, there is always a ferment of ideas as a rule. No such thing as a monolithic dominance of any single idea but rather a pleasant dispersion of viewpoints and interpretations.

  23. norpil norpil

sorry anna if sometimes i become like others and became too engaged. i certainly appreciate that i can blog here.as for esperon, i agree he is lucky.i am against guns but i will not be against those who may want to use it on him.but what can one expect from esperon, gma has a team that is united with the help of money.nobody dared take power when she was away probabbly because all are satisfied.as for anthony, i have read most of his posts but i did not react since almost everybody is already.he is also talking sense about filipinos being too dependent on the govt.

  24. Norpil,

I beg to disagree that “Filipinos are too dependent on the government.”

How can that be when there’s not a free universal health care system to cater to both rich and poor, and particularly to the poor?

That statement is kinda wild because, I don’t think that Filipinos have unemployment benefits or pension either when they lose their job.

How can we say that Filipinos are TOO dependent on government without batting an eyelash when we know full well that Filipinos cannot depend on their government for their basic survival?

I also find it’s difficult to say such encompassing statement when this government, Gloria’s government is the least of entities that Filipinos depend on!

Honestly, I believe the opposite, that’s why Filipinos are expatriating by the millions precisely because they DO NOT DEPEND and KNOW THEY CAN NOT be dependent on this government.

To me, “Filipinos are too dependent on the government.” is really not quite right because those basic premises are not present.

  25. Allow me to put it more succintly:

To me, “Filipinos are too dependent on the government.” is really not quite right because the basic premises for dependence on government are NOT there…

  26. alitaptap alitaptap

Ana, you will notice that Ellen prefaced her commentary with the feat o Maria Theresa Pangilinan at Cavite State University and the UP-PGGH “oust gloria” banner. Now this Esperon pelting has a common denominator_ FEAR! Gloria and her lapdogs are scared of the people they are supposed to serve. For all the bravado, feigned or otherwise, they are shaking with their kness knocking whenever they are in public. They are aware of their sins against their own people. They may not have the conscience to repent, but they sure are paranoid about their safety. Did you know that Gloria is wearing bullet proof vests?

  27. Alitaptap,

I’m all for it – pelting Gloria and her cabal!

What a way to show them indeed that young Pinoys and Pinays have courage.

No, I didn’t know that Gloria wears bullet proof vest… Kaya pala mukhang sack of potatoes iyong katawan niya.

  28. You bet, Anna and Alitaptap. It does not matter whether there are those who would not join the protests but the majority are for throwing rotten eggs and mud at Esperon. It just gets in to my nerves about all these talks on Filipinos being divided even when majority of the population (92 percent as of last survey) are against the leadership of this bogus president just to amuse her definitely by these Internet Brigade paying lip service to the now panicking spoiled brat!

  29. norpil norpil

for me there is sense when he was saying that he was able to start a company without any help from the govt.he was also talking about jobs that can expand which has also some sense and which also does not need help from the govt.these are the reasons behind this too dependent statement.

  30. “there is sense when he was saying that he was able to start a company without any help from the govt”

Ah, Norpil but that is a different statement altogether as opposed to “Filipinos are too dependent on government”.

Besides, I still have to see Filipinos (as en masse) depending on government to set up business…

  31. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

And all the time I thought we were merely DEPENDING on government to provide the proper environment for our economic and social activities to prosper so that jobs could be generated. Which means we were DEPENDING on government to be honest, not cheat, not lie, not steal, not repress or oppress, not change the rules of the game in midstream for businessmen and investors. Businessmen have been asking government for decades not to meddle too much in their businesses, to cut red tape.

Is that too much to ask? Is that being too DEPENDENT on government?

  32. Thanks, Anna. I thanked this group of union leaders who marched to the Philippine Embassy on behalf of the Filipinos who should be the ones shouting at the top of their lungs against the atrocities being committed by their own government against human rights activists in the Philippines, but then, it is on a weekday, and everyone is busy making money!

Hopefully, we will have a bigger rally, a street demonstration actually when it gets cooler. It’s early autumn here now.

We also will have a meeting with parliamentarians here in Japan to discuss about the pimping of Filipinos here with the Bansot insisting on deploying young boys and girls to Japan again in two years’ time as entertainers kuno!

This modern slavery being engaged in by this bugaw government is in fact destroying Filipinos, who are proving to be more a burden to the host countries than assets.

Right now, our problem here are these Filipino women who are becoming a burden to the Japanese society with majority of them on welfare, and those who are stripped of their welfare now even committing heinous crimes such as arson, drug running and even insurance scam.

  33. Hey Split Personality whoever you are calling yourself by some judge’s name according to Florry, you don’t put words into my mouth! You are not me, and I am not you!

If you cannot say a good thing about a person, will you please stop addressing your stupid comments to anyone in this blog. What you do is detract the smooth flow of the debate in this blog, and you definitely spoil the fun!

That is because I was called idiotic moronic; it was in retaliation. It takes one to know one; someone calls me idotic moronic and that person must be idotic moronic as well.

Anthony, insults have become part of this blog. You just have to get used to it or quit. Am I free from these insults? Of course not. Look at that nincompoop who keeps bashing Capampagan and who continues to call them “dugong aso”. Also, you’re in a blog owned, moderated and controlled by anti-GMA…majority of members are including me. So, your argument and sometimes defense of this Gloria is an exercise in futility. If you think you can get away from the Queen of this Blog, you’re mistaken. For this person who lords it over this blog can attack but doesn’t want to be attacked. Worse, this person is tolerated…making me think if she’s been reprimanded even privately. If you can’t take the heat, I strongly suggest that you leave this blog. Perhaps your ideas and voice would be better heard at government e-groups.

I’d like to stress one thing, which can’t be overstressed – I am not defending GMA. Its an exercise in futility, for you and your kind, as you have made your mind up, as I have mine.

Besides, I dont need to defend GMA. She’s already assured of sitting till 2010, whether we like it or not. No amount of “pagtatatalak” will remove her from her seat. Of course, I must not take away your constitutional right of free speech, so go ahead, feel free to continue your “pagtatatalak.” Its your lives anyway.

Saka this is supposed to be a democratic blog, right? Not exclusively for anti-GMA? This is not a pure ranting board, (with no contrary views allowed) right? But until the time Ellen forbids me from posting, I will continue to post here.

You know you must take a shot at the so-called Queen of this Blog. This Blog should be free for all, a level playing field. You should fight for your freedom of equality here – no royalty!

It is sad that elitism still extends to this blog.

Come on, I might be the only proof that democracy exists in this blog! Didnt it ever occur to you that I might be a paid hack of someone who is also anti-GMA, just to rock the boat and create a semblance of democracy here?

    To mrivera:

Kaya it shows di ka tolerant of other views – a no no in a democracy.

Huwag kang mag-alala.

Saka, FYI, this blog is just one of millions of web sites out there.

Here’s the latest: Despite not being confirmed by the CA for his third star rank, Gloria still went on to promote him to four star. So, GMA is higher than the CA. There’s no need for confirmation in her administration. She can even promote anyone from sergeant to General.

  59. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

    npongco:

Amazing! I also read the promotion of AFP Cheap of Staff Gen. Hemorrhoid Assperon to four star General. Incredible, when Assperon still waiting from Commission on Appointments (CA) confirmation on his three star. And how about traitor Angelo Reyes secretary of DENR without CA confirmation? If I’m not mistaken. Obviously, illegitimate Gloria doesn’t care about the order of protocal since fake Gloria got her own agenda. Anyway, Gloria wants to abolish the Senate anyway?

Moreover, Traitor Angelo Reyes with 8 under secretaries under him. How many does he need to do his unconfirmed position? Plain abuse of power the waste of tax payers money. Ain’t theirs so why not!

    What cooperation and working together???

  60. vic vic

I hope she won’t give them another Star cuz that will elevate them to the level of immortals the like of General Eisenhower, McArthur, Bradley, and the greatest field commander of all George Patton jr. Just imagine if these guys see these jokers among them one of these days. Patton will probably ask, where did you guys got your stars, from the Boys Scout? And Big Mac might add and when was the third world war? I know what Gen. Eisenhower will surely ask; has anyone of you became a President. Bradley was known as the quite one and maybe the one who knew more than anyone of them, so he’ll just grin and shake his head.

(At mali pang mag-Ingles!

What is EE – ENG NA ENG

What is ME – MEDYO ENG

What is IE – INDI ENG (IE kamo ang course mo, right?)

Para sa iyo din naman Tongue: isulat mo sa balota this 2007 elections, your senatorial line-up:

    Susan Roces POE
    Lucio TAN
    Raymundo, INA
    Muhlach, NIÑO

    anthony escalera,

me? using god’s name in vain? sino’ng god ang sinasabi mo? ‘yung goddess mo sa malakanyang? patawa ka!!!

    To mrivera:

You just profaned the name of the Almighty by mentioning it in this blog.

    Dinamay mo pa Siya.

    To npongco:

“Anthony is just echoing and following the line of his fake boss. He wants you to call his boss in Malacanang “Allah”…as in Madam Allahdin”

Asus, nag-tunog talunan na rin si npongco. Nag-tunog supalpal. Very much like an old friend here.

Wow, I have a fake boss?!? Well who then is my real boss?!? Please tell me, kasi it looks like you know a lot more than me.

Kung sa tingin mo boss ko yung sinasabi mong boss ko, I DARE YOU TO CITE POSTS I MADE WHICH PRAISED THE BOSS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT TO THE HIGHEST HEAVENS!

You sound like some members of the “united opposition” – Roilo Golez, Alan Cayetano, Nene Pimentel – sour graping, hindi lang naambunan ni Ate Glue, nag-opposition na!

  90. Mrivera Mrivera

anthony escalera, pati ba naman mga followers nina bin laden saddam hussein gagatungan mo pa? baka ikaw pa ang habulin nila at reypin dahil sa hindi mo alam ang ibig sabihin mga praises to allah na binanggit ko. vintage? bah, treasured and sought after ‘yan ngayon, di mo ba alam?

  91. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To mrivera:

Basta yari ka. You just dragged the name of the Almighty in this worldly blog.

“vintage” does not refer to what you described are praises.

“Vintage” refers to your gawi na mag-ungkat/mag-drag ng isyu from out of the blue. Ibig sabihin, talagang true to form ka – ang mag-ungkat/mag-drag ng isyu from out of the blue.

Asus, vintage mrivera? Treasured and sought after ka? Dream on.

  92. Mrivera Mrivera

aywa mo mang aminin, you are also resorting to ad hominems. medyo tame nga lang ang dating. kungbaga, shitting in a civilized way.

  93. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To mrivera:

Yes, Im resorting to ad hominems, only because you started it!

I’ll never ever initiate the use of ad hominems. If I ever use them, its for retaliation. Returning the favor ‘ika nga.

  94. Mrivera Mrivera

  95. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To mrivera:

Nakupo. Sayang, KUNG may panahon lang ako, ipo-post ko yung mga messages mo na tinawag mo akong bulag without any qualifications.
