Challenging the unworthy

miranda-in-combat-uniform.JPG lim-with-his-elite-scout-rangers.JPG rangers.JPG

Camp Capinpin,Tanay – One of the accused alleged “mutineer” challenged Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon last Friday not to interfere in the court martial proceedings of the 28 miltiary officers involved in the aborted Feb. 2006 withdrawal of support from the Arroyo presidency.

Army Major Jose Leomar Doctolero said, “I pose a challenge to the convening authority not to interfere with the proceedings here.”

Doctolero said from the very beginning of the court martial, all he has been hearing has been, ‘order of Gen. Esperon.’

The convening of Special Court Martial no. 2, alto referred to as “Miranda et al”, arose from the accusation of Esperon that Miranda, Brig.Gen. Danny Lim and 26 other Army and Marine officers plotted to withdraw support from Arroyo in Feb. 2006. Esperon said he will be a witness in the trial. All decisions by the panel will be referred to him for approval.

In a five-hour hearing under the strictest security arrangements, Doctolero said, “We are not expecting or even hoping leniency. We want a fair trial.”

Yesterday’s trial saw the expulsion of seven members of the panel:

Lt. Col. Achilles Segumalian expelled Read Admiral Petronilo Magno; Lt. Col. Nestor Flordeliza challenged Maj. Gen. Pedro Insierto; Lt. Col. Edmundo Malabanjot cahllegend Maj. Gen. Fortunato Mesa; Major Jason Laureano Aquino challegned Brig. Gen. Salvador Collantes; Doctolero expelled Maj. Gen. Delfin Bangit; Capt. James Sabadan expelled Maj. Gen. Juantio Cabayao, Jr.; and Capt. Montano Almodovar challenged Rear Admiral Ricardo Calderon.

Bangit, who is also chief of the Intelligence Service of the AFP, stayed only in his seat for less than five minutes, not even long enough to warm it, when he was challenged.

Maj. Gen. Fernando Manalo was forced to “voluntary inhibit” for being biased after he denied the motion of lawyer Trixie Angeles, counsel for Capt. Ruben Guinolbay, before she could even articulate it.

Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda, former commandant of the Philippine Marines, and many of the Scout Rangers showed up in their Battle Dress Uniform. “I’m in a fighting mood,” Miranda said laughing.

The few photos (the restrictions were unreasonable!) that a relative of the accused was able to take after the hearing:

1. Maj. General Renato Miranda. At a distant background are Cap. Dante Langkit and Col. Orlando de Leon.

2. Brig. Gen. Danny Lim and his elite Rangers: Maj. Jose Leomar Doctolero; Capt. Allan Aurino;Lim, Capt. Ruben Guinolbay;Lt. Col. Edmundo Malabanjot;Capt. Isagani Criste. Smiling at the background is Lt. Col. Nestor Flordeliza.

I agree with Major Doctolero. Why not Esperon let the court proceedings run its own course. How can they expect a fair trial if its always on “orders of esperon”. It appears that every word, every action, every movement and every air they breath inside and outside the court room are being controlled by this freak who is full of air and who loves to act as a witness, as a lawyer, as a judge and as an executioner. It’s a clear case of persecution.

  2. rose rose

He wants to run the whole proceedings so let him..para mapugotan siya ng ulo…He wants to execute let him so we will execute him too..may pananagutan siya sa bayan…Ano lalaban ka? People of the Philippine versus Gloria Arroyo, General Esperon, et al.

The detained officers must keep challenging Assperon’s Kangaroo Court composition until thy Kingdom come. Anyways, AFP chief General Esperon retires on February 28, 2008. Let’s hope that the next AFP chief will give them a fair trial. Army Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano is a strong candidate to succeed AFP chief Esperon. The Chief of Staff of the AFP traditionally comes from the Philippine Army. General Esperon was linked to the election fraud Hello Garci controversy. He is personally persecuting retired Marine Major General Miranda, et al for questioning the systematic cheating in Mindanao during the 2004 presidential election. BTW, then court martial president Lt. Gen. Yano was ousted via peremptory challenge by Maj. General Miranda.

  7. The case is withdrawal of support from the fake Arroyo presidency. What the court should make emphasis here are the causes of the withdrawal like the planned disruption of peaceful rallies with bombs they were told to plant and blame the rallyists for.

As gallant men in uniform, and having pledged to protect the Philippines and its people, they naturally could not and would not in any way do it. It is called insubordination and to one they have considered not legitimately their Commander-in-Chief.

This argument on the legitimacy of this regime in fact should be included in the court proceedings against these heroes and gallant men of the AFP. Onli in da Pilipins!

  8. Tanong nga ni Gokusen, “Ikaw, which side are you—grupo ni Assperon o grupo ng mga kalaban ni Gloria y Assperon?” Simple lang naman.

Borrowing from Luke and Matthew, “No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve the Philippines and Gloria mammon.”

  9. cocoy cocoy

Ang depensa ng mga akusado sa palagay ko ay simple sentence lang na ganito—We withdrawn our suport to the president because we can no longer serve her personal interest in massive corruption and on election cheating, we are the defender of the constitution and to the Filipino people, not for the president who usurped her power through power grab and election cheating— Ala Lt. Wakada who refused to obey order in going to Iraq.

  10. parasabayan parasabayan

Rose, that would be the day! True justice will one day come: People of the Philippines vs Tiyanak and Asspweron! Malapit na yan! Hindi palaging magwawagi ang kasamaan!

So, why still wait for 2008? Why not remove Gloria now so Esperon can also be put to jail? Why still wait for the Americans to offer help to remove a fake president? Right now, magulo rin sa America as a matter of fact. One more year na lang si Bush but the number of Americans pushing for impeachment of Bush is growing I am told. Iyan ngayon ang pinasasamantalahan ni Gloria Boba to try to show that the US is behind her kahit no pansin naman siya!

  12. parasabayan parasabayan

Yuko, I hope the Filipinos will wake up! Hopefully, the reopening of the “Hello Garci” case in the Senate and the upcoming Erap verdict will trigger the flash point to oust this bogus president!

Franky speaking, I am not putting hope in the Senate hearing on these HG tapes much more than necessary. I am adopting the attitude of wait and see what’s gonna happen. Ang daming beses na kasi tayong nasiphayo, and I don’t think I can take another one although I am determined to fight my fight if necessary. Tira lang ng tira, and the devil may care!

At least, where I am based, we get results, so it does make up for all the frustrations over the failure of people back in the land of our birth to remove the usurper and her cahorts yet while they succeed in putting good people like the group of Brig. Gen. Lim in jail, and worse, not allow a duly elected senator to function and do his duties and responsibilities to his country and people, all Filipinos, not just the 11M voters who elected him.

Isa lang iyong judge, who does not seem to represent the voice of the people. Bakit walang magawa diyan?

  16. .. Frankly speaking….

  17. Off topic, but the world must be turning upside down. I read in Tribune that in Kenya, “A case on behalf of Jesus Christ has come knocking on Kenya’s high court door, lodged by a fervent Christian group that wants his conviction declared “null and void” and his Crucifixion “illegal.”

The petition is said to have been filed Monday “with the court registrar, raising a novel set of legal quandaries — not the least of which involves the statute of limitations and whether the high court has jurisdiction over the ‘Son of God.’”

The petition is yet to be handed down. I am a devout Christian but to me this is indeed preposterous although this has been prophesied of old. Christ has warned that in the last days there will be a lot many who will declare their faith in Christ and deceive a lot of people. (Matthew 24)

Signs of the times, no doubt!

  18. Ellen,

“Order ni Gen Esperon!” Grotesque in the extreme!

A court martial is supposed to be independent – kaya nga may presiding judge of the highest rank, preferably a general at this level.

A real, bona fide court martial is supposed to be taking no orders from the chief of staff AFP. Anong klaseng mga gunggong iyan?

Good thing you and other journalists are there to record the true proceedings – otherwise, one can very well imagine what hocus pocuses these Esperon military janitors are capable of doing.

I believe that Lt. Col. Edmundo Malabanjot did right in challenging Maj. Gen. Fortunato Mesa. Mesa is one of the most convoluted AFP officers I know. While he may mouth doctrines in the roundabout way and makes you believe that he knows more than he does, he is in reality a guy who will kiss the asses of his superiors to make life simpler for himself.

His problem is not so much that he has no brains but he has a physical handicap (combat injury) which I suppose has given him a kind of inferiority complex.

  19. Yuko,

Frankly, I believe it’s time Joma faced his accusers in Pinas and not in The Netherlands. Of course, he has a right to a robust defence which I’m sure he will have wherever his trial might be. I also don’t disagree that his supporters have a moral right to rally for his release but I don’t believe Sison is NOT guilty of some of the accusations fielded against him.

I also believe that he is Armando Liwanag (having changed his pseudonym from Guerrero to Liwanag), currently the CPP-NPA chief and is ‘partly’ responsible for the tactical offensives perpetuated by the NPAs in various parts of the country.

If Sison were true to his ideals, he must go home and face the music. His claim that there is a 10 million peso bounty on his head, which may be true, doesn’t wash. His petit bourgeois lifestyle in Utrecht is in contradiction with everything he spews.

I have little sympathy for Sison at this point.

This explains why he made our life difficult yesterday. The court martial panel issued guidelines that made coverage almost impossible. We were shunted away about 100 meters away from the front of the court house. We couldn’t take pictures and we can’t “ambush” any of the accused. I will write more about this tomorrow.

Someone told us it was Gen. De Mesa’s idea to impose the tyrannical guidelines.

Even that was not allowed last Friday. For lunch, we were able to find a turo-turo stall a few kilometers away from the camp.

Usually, hearings are adjourned past 12. Last Friday, it was past 3:00 pm.

Chairs were also removed from the media section. Imagine all those time from morning till afternoon, nakatayo kami.

Now we know, how hard it is to be a department store salesgirl.

Ces Drilon of ABS-CBN complained. They gave two chairs.

On our being shunted away from the entrance of the court house, one reporter is thinking of bringing a megaphone next hearing so we can shout our questions.

  44. Rose,

Just to clarify! Even if the army chief gets annointed traditionally CSAFP, at the level of fighting officers, particularly if they are from the PMA, mistahs to boot, in theory, there is no discrimination against one or the other, whether they are of the same service or not.

When an officer reaches the colonel rank, he becomes more AFP oriented because he is in theory, only one rank away from being called “so and so AFP, eg., Juan de la Cruz, Brig Gen AFP. When they reach the star rank, these officers tend to belong “no more” to their service command only but to the AFP as a whole.

Personally, I’ve witnessed discrimnation between officers on a personal level and not on the inter-service command level. For example, Arnie Acedera Class 63 who was CG PAF and later on went on to become CSAFP (he was FVR’s favourite pilot), hated Brig Gen Dauz Class 62. Arnie Acedera was mean and foul to poor Dauz whose promotion to the star rank Acedera tried to block (Acedera acceeded to the star rank ahead of Dauz in spite of the latter’s PMA seniority over Acedera); Acedera thought Dauz, who was actually a decent man, was dumb, etc.

There were more incidents of personal hositilities between officers of the same service which heightened when they reached the AFP officer level.

Actually, many officers who didn’t belong to the same service would speak highly of their fellow officers, eg. navy officers saying the best things about their contemporary officers from the air force or army and vice versa. Three years ago, in a private dinner and among friends, a navy and an air force officer spoke highly of an army officer in unison (to the detriment of Braganza who unfortunately was ROTC).

You might say that the discrimination between services may arise when an officer in charge, i.e., service command is ROTC or commissioned outside of the PMA. Admiral Hinco suffered a bit because of this since he was not a PMA product.

  45. chi chi

Ha?! Pati pagkain na galing kay Mrs. Q and friends were already banned, nakatayo pa kayo hanggang matapos ang hearing!

    Ibang mag-order talaga si Asspweron!

  46. Boxy, it was Capt. Guinolbay’s birthday last week. His parents and other relatives, who came all the way from Kalinga, were subjected to a lot of restrictions before they were allowed to visit him.

I was told they were made to wait for more than two hours at the camp’s gate.

Arroyo and Esperon are mean and odious.

  47. Chabeli Chabeli

We should show our support to the People’s Soldiers in Tanay. It’s time we do something visible like having stickers, t-shirts, etc. made with the slogan using the words of Maj. Gen. Miranda, “I’m in a fighting mood”.

My heart breaks – as most of those here in Ellensville – after reading Military Wife’s comments. Boy, can that Ass is something else talaga !

  48. A source said, the Esperon and his men asessed that reports about the difficulties of the detainees family are working in their favor because that would disuade other soldiers from joining their cause or even sympathizing with them.

    Masama talaga sila!Manhid.

  49. Obviously, a member of a service command would always crack jokes against a rival service command but that’s only for the heck of it.

For instance, during the AFP modernization phase planning, an air force general would tease the army saying that electric rice cookers are the only equipment they need and the army would be modernized prompting Orly Mercado, who was chairman of the Defence Committee hearing the combined AFP at the Senate to laugh.

Outside of the jokes, hositilities “openly” arise when the officers (but more on the senior level), i.e., colonel and higher, start jockeying for promotions to the next rank because they know that each step up the ladder will ensure them a better opportunity for a fight for service command post. Reason is each star position is limited, i.e., there’s only a number of positions for 1 star officers. Those who can’t make it to a star rank after 9 years know they will be attrited (forced out of or retired forcibly from service) by the end of their 10th year of their rank as colonel (army & air force) or captain (navy).

The militics is horrendous in the AFP. Militics consume, I’d say, 50% of their time on the job starting at the colonel level.

Esperon knew when he was PSG chief that he was sure to become CSAFP if he played ball. And I have no doubt that from the time he was lt colonel (when he became deputy PSG to Calimlim) he spent 50% of his job time perfecting the art of militics (military politics.)

  50. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Re: traditionally the chief of staff comes from the army

Why? Majority of 120,000+ AFP came from the Army. About 80,000 men and women. Discrimination?

  51. Re “we need media people to somehow protect us from further human rights abuse,”

I agree – it is in these instances when the adage ‘pen becomes mightier than the sword’ becomes an unflinching reality.

Someone here commented that Esperon doesn’t give a damn because he knows that by next year, when he retires, a juicy position is awaiting him. Perhaps, he would be appointed ambassador – away from the prying eyes and troublesome Manila and would therefore be less accessible to the embarassing issues hounding him, i.e., Garci issue, military brutality, etc.

  52. chi chi

    Ellen,

‘Yan ang akala ni Asspweron, that difficulties of soldiers and families alike will dissuade others from joining their cause.

  53. Militics has been raised to another level under Gloria Arroyo. Those who wanted to get ahed sold their souls and allowed themselves to be used as election cheating operators. Something that not even Marcos did.

(During Marcos time, it was the warlords who did the cheating. The military just turned a blind eye. Under Arroyo, it was the military who actually performed the tampering of elections results.)

Militics is the reason for the recent debacle in Mindanao. Incompetence. Dud mortars. Wrong frequency. Standdown orders in the midst of a battle. These all can be traced Gloria illegitimate presidency, which is being propped up by morally corrupt members of the military.

  54. Re: “(During Marcos time, it was the warlords who did the cheating. The military just turned a blind eye. Under Arroyo, it was the military who actually performed the tampering of elections results.) ”

    How very true!

Actually, if I were to believe an AFP friend who I spoke to recently, it’s far worse today. Aside from militics, Esperon himself has lost all military courage and common sense. The latest incident concerns his erstwhile plan to engage in punitive exercises in the South following the beheading of the 10 Marines.

This friend of mine said that Esperon recommendeded to Gloria that a punitive exercise must be done but Gloria said no. Esperon, who should have exercised common sense prerogative by explaining to Gloria the necessity of engaging a military action did not even bat an eye lash and merely said, ‘Yes, Ma’am.’

My friend was so disgusted and said, “Kasi bodyguard lang talaga ang role niyan – accidental lang ang pagiging general niyan.’

  55. Esperon is really bad news! He is not qualified to lead the AFP. He is a walking destroyer in action – his role today is NOT to lead, manage or allow the AFP to function as a military institution.

His role is to make sure that the AFP will not topple Gloria. The AFP as an institution is beyond him today – he will break men, good officers and men/women of the AFP so Gloria will sleep easy at night. There’s never been as loyal a dog as Esperon is to his master (outside of Ver) than anyone in the AFP as Esperon is today.

Ver was not of the PMA mould but Esperon is – one would have thought that he would have been more professional than Ver but Ver, for all his warts and faults, would appear today as the more professional military of the two. Ver managed, made the AFP officers and men proud of their uniform, he provided them the reason for their being, the reason for their calling. Esperon on the other hand, is destroying the institution that he has sworn to serve.

His term at the helm is a good study on how one destroys an institution! Simply, utterly shocking!

  56. Ellen: A source said, the Esperon and his men asessed that reports about the difficulties of the detainees family are working in their favor because that would disuade other soldiers from joining their cause or even sympathizing with them.

    *****

This has been a modus operandi eversince. I remember watching a video clip during the mutiny with parents of three or four soldiers being interviewed and appealing to their sons to give up the fight, and soon after these soldiers were seen leaving Oakwood and going to a nearby hotel where they were directed to go and be debriefed. It was disgusting really.

  57. Chabeli Chabeli

Chi, you said that “Kung ganyang mag-isip si Ass, e talagang hindi sila mananalo sa NPA at MILF and abus!”

Ang sabi nga raw Gloria & the Ass are the best recruiters of the NPA, MNLF & the ASG !

  58. With the kind of morale the PMAers have now, they may just as well get new recruits from Leyte and Samar. I thought people there would make good soldiers, for they have more guts and not easy to surrender, and reason I guess why the NPA gets more of their recruits there, and why there are more victims of extrajudicial killings there.

The present AFP apparently cannot protect the Philippines with the kind of leadership it has and the gallant men in uniform now all in jail.

Kawawang bansa! Surrender Bataan agad in case it is invaded!

  59. Chabeli Chabeli

When you have a hated leader as what we have in the Philippines, its people & every sector of society is affected – today, the Philippines is probably one of the most demoralized nation. The bad & the ugly is what Gloria brought to this nation. That’s probably why many of our countrymen are leaving the Philippines in droves.

Gloria has destroyed the Philippines. & even if she gave up her life, it would not be enough to pay for what she has done. Hell would be the only alternative for her !

Are you ready for this guys?…

AFP spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Bartolome Bacarro led military men this afternoon.. He led them to, dyarraaaannnnnn…. WOWOWEE!….. He was there with many soldiers coming from different sectors of the AFP (Navy, Marines, Army, etc)..

    1. The military danced and joined games in Wowowee while their “brothers” are risking their lives fighting co-Filipinos in an endless war in Mindanao. How much more ironic can you get?

    2. This proves how Bacarro and company CAN TOLERATE CHEATERS. The whole world knows how Wowowee cheated in one of their games (Wilyonaryo) and yet the AFP allowed their men be there in front of the camera, as if everything is OK and no cheatings have happened. Hhmmm, familiar scenario.. tsk, tsk, tsk…

Ellen, this thread is becoming old now. I hope you can find a way for others to read this post also. Thanks!

I usually look at the newspapers the next day to see coverages of the court martial proceedings. But this Friday’s hearing hardly had any. Only Bandila aired a good one minute segment which said it all.

Whichever way I look at it, asspweron wants to put these “men of honor” away for good before he retires in February. Order ni tiyanak for sure! These officers know too much about the election fraud committed by the Garci generals which is the root cause of “breaking” the chain of command kuno. How can they stomach to follow their chief when they know fully well how “dirty” she operated? They also know how the corrupt the AFP has become. Only the Garci generals were given the choice positions!

Anna is absolutely right, it becomes the “sipsips” who make it to the top of the AFP. They actually undermine each other as they go up to the top positions. Some even give real estate gifts to the chief, like a beach front property perhaps to get the coveted position. It is the “bata bata” system. For the most part, most of these officers who are vying for the higher positions are products of the PMA and almost all of them may be qualified for the top position. It is the manner of leading the AFP that matters! Asspweron has shown that he cares the least for his men! He has become the SECURITY GUARD of the tiyanak! Never mind the morale of the AFP as a whole because his sole duty is to make sure that tiyanak stays in her stolen position. I wonder if he sleeps weel at night? No wonder he has more folds on his face these days more so than my Chinese Sharpei!

  62. parasabayan parasabayan

Tiyanak and the ass are fighting all the factions at the same time spreading themselves so thin. But the biggest challenge they are facing is that of Erap’s forthcoming conviction. Whichever way we all look at it, tiyanak has to convict Erap! If she doesn’t then she is really an illegitimate president! She will not allow that. She had all her fingers in Erap’s case. Nagmamalinislinisan pa siya eh nasa putikan na siya, sa kumunoy pa and she is fast dragged into it that she will never surface out.

  63. parasabayan parasabayan

Off Topic: Gungongzales in his death bed (I would like to look at it that way) has issued warnings to people who may be playing the “Hello Garci” tape. He said he will have them arrested!!! Hindi na nga makakilos eh nagmamado pa. I would say to all, let us play the tape all over the country in unison! Tignan lang natin kung mayroon siyang magagawa!

  64. “I would say to all, let us play the tape all over the country in unison! ”

If we can achieve that – play the tape all over the country in unison – then there is a huge chance that Gloria may be toppled.

Play the damn thing on speakers, in malls, etc. When the police or the military step in to dismantle the sound equipment, play it from a different station.

Courage is what it takes to do such things. Am afraid however that we need morally courageous people to lead the common public to do that. The masa on its own won’t do it coz they don’t have the material opportunity to do it, however, I’m confident that if the middle class, which in theory, has the determination, the means and the education to effect a strong stand, could start this kind of operation, the masa inevitably will follow.

As ever, in a revolution as history has shown us, the masa or the proletariat have never been the leaders – it’s always been someone or people from the middle class or even the elite of a nation that’s always ignited the sparks of a revolution.

  65. Playing the Garci tapes nationwide during the Senate hearing will be a good boost to the investigation. No need to gather courage to do it even when the Midget has declared playing the tapes illegal. JUST DO IT!

I don’t think they have enough jails to put everybody in prison in case of a nationwide protest using these tapes as instruments of a nationwide protest, which actually does not have to be violent even when the unano and her Assperon try to make it so.

The files are available online for those who can surf the Internet. Then burn them in CDs.

RE: Erap’s forthcoming conviction, tiyanak has to convict Erap!

Why the Davide-led Supreme Court created ‘special division’ of the anti-graft court to try all corruption cases against ousted President Joseph Estrada? The special division anti-graft court has one purpose and final goal is the conviction of Erap by hook or by crook. Former Supreme Court chief justice Hilario Davide and his cohorts had succeeded to legitimize the illegitimate Gloria Arroyo presidency in 2001 kudeta. Erap’s conviction will seal Davide’s doctrine- the Mob rule.

  69. Re: “after the popular “Wowowee” show of ABS-CBN staged an emotional tribute for their comrades who were killed in Sulu and Basilan.”

    This is absolutely crazy.

What is Esperon up to? Why is he turning ‘battle hardened’ soldiers into teary clown entertainers? He shouldn’t have allowed these soldiers to appear on TV in that fashion. Never mind if the the motive of the Wowowee producers was noble (which I doubt), the show is hardly the type of show required to show how emotional soldiers can be when their comrades get killed in action.

Absolutely abominable way of treating soldiers – this is the best way to turn soldiers into real ‘sundalong kanin’ (as Yuko likes to quote), believe it or not. The military is being stripped of their last remaining fiber of dignity.

Esperon is a shithead of the lowest category!

Enough is enough.

How true is this?

Yawa man gid. Ang ibig bang sabihin guilty silang lahat doon?

“When they reach the star rank, these officers tend to belong “no more” to their service command only but to the AFP as a whole.”

anna, that’s not how i interpret the attitudes of these garci generals.

they are acting as if they already own the whole AFP as shown by the way they ran the the whole organization out of the control of the indebted commander-in-thief.

they can dictate whatever scenario they want to happen in every assignment of foot soldiers and the newly commissioned lieutenants while they are comfortably relaxing inside their fully furnished offices.

Second British general bashes US strategy in Iraq

    Agence France-Presse

LONDON — The British backlash over the US handling of post-invasion Iraq grew Sunday as another military commander blasted Washington’s “fatally flawed” policy.

Major General Tim Cross, the top British officer involved in planning post-war Iraq, said he raised serious concerns with then US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld about the possibility of the country descending into chaos.

their balls are only filled with fart!

  82. Magno,

Sabi pa ni General Sir Mike Jackson, “intellectually bankrupt” daw ang US planning for Iraq.

Si General Sir Richard Dannatt, current UK Army chief was more forthcoming, he said, “Our presence in Iraq is no longer the solution, it has become a problem.” For saying this out loud, publicly, openly, etc. while he is major service commander, he has burried his appointment to become the next UK armed forces chief! But never mind, he said he was in charge of his people, the army and he didn’t want them to die uselessly.

A follow up to the Wowowee scandal:

The family of slain Marine Cpl. Manuel Tayaban Jr., one of the 15 soldiers killed in a clash with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Basilan on Aug. 18, said in Baguio that they were given the runaround after being badgered by “Wowowee” producers into participating last week in a benefit show that had been dedicated to the slain troopers.

August Tayaban said the producers repeatedly called them up while his brother was being buried on Aug. 27, urging them to join the Sept. 1 episode.

“We were told we would participate in the games, but we had to first undergo an audition. We asked for a Friday audition schedule and proceeded to Manila using borrowed bus fare,” Tayaban, 38, said.
