No more New York hotdogs for P-Noy

By Benjamin Pimentel
Inquirer.net

CALIFORNIA, United States—Maybe P-Noy should lay off the New York hotdogs. It’s making him talk strange.

Consider what he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer when asked about his friend, Undersecretary Rico Puno, who’s in hot water over alleged links to gambling and his role in the bungled Luneta rescue.

“One thing we have to watch out for is if these people who have been with us when we were still in the harassed opposition and who joined us in our struggles…if all these people who are close to us are removed and replaced by those who are not as close, the next group could already be our enemies,” he said.

Now, that was one jumbled, scary statement. You can read it on so many levels, few of them flattering to the chief executive of the country.

For the Philippine President basically admitted that, despite what appeared to be a pretty hefty mandate, he’s really relying on a very small circle of people to do his job.

Certainly, no one would deny him the right to rely upon people he trusts, who are also his long-time allies—those “who have been with us when were still in the harassed opposition and who joined us in our struggles.”

But that remark is bound to also raise concerns, as I have in the past in this space, that when the going gets tough, it’s going to be tough for P-Noy to get tough with his friends and relatives—no matter what they’ve done.

Yes, he did also say, “There is a process.”

And he should have stopped there. There’s a process. Period.

But then he kept on going: “If I can give the process to our foes, our friends and allies are also entitled to that process so that you can’t have them hanged just because someone asked that you do so.”

What in the world does that mean?

Then he topped it all with the subtle warning that he could end up with a team that “could already be our enemies.”

It’s truly puzzling that, with all the attention P-Noy’s government has showered on its communications team, his messages have been as coherent as a Manila traffic jam.

In fact, let’s stick with that image for a moment.

For it is in that realm that P-Noy actually scored his first and perhaps more decisive victory to date. He banned the wangwang, which was an inspired and smart move. It was a promise that was easy to fulfill—and it was popular.

And best of all, P-Noy didn’t beat that message to death. He just did it.

On the other hand, here’s the first major test of his ability to deal with allies who may have erred—to show that, unlike other presidents, he has the guts, the moral strength, to show a friend, a former classmate, perhaps even a family member, the door if he or she has done something wrong.

Yes, there is a process. And part of that process should be for the president of the land to affirm that process of finding out if the charges are true, and to say nothing more and step back. Way back.

Hopefully, he will.

Although one wonders.

After all, when he was asked a few months ago about whether he would get involved in the dispute between his family and the poor farmers of Hacienda Luisita, P-Noy signalled that he didn’t think it was the right thing to do.

“If I get involved, it will appear that I am interfering,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I will be imposing myself on the people who have suffered the past six years.”

That one made me scratch my head too.

For in theory, the basic rule should go like this for a Philippine president: When poor, suffering people are involved, you step in to help them out. When it’s your rich friends and allies, you step back and make damn sure that it does not “appear that I am interfering.”

Maybe it was really just the New York hotdog. Or maybe jet lag.

  1. Oh dear, oh dear… one reads something nice about him and then suddenly, something as sloppy as this comes up; it’s like watching one of those hospital machines, you know with graphs? Goes up and down… not stable. Oh dear!

Pres Aquino, when in a hole, stop digging, for goodness sake!!!!

You’re right Mr. B. Pimentel. Actually, it send shiver up my spine to read how Pres. Aquino III think of people close and around him. Is he thinking – is this person near me my friend or foe? No wonder he thinks differently of Sec. Robredo vis-a-vis USec Puno. Now he needs Sec. Robredo to Deodorize DILG of the jueteng stink.

From Pres. Aquino III’s statement, he has only ears for those very close and loyal to him. What others say mean squat. Is he unraveling his true and real self with these statements? I do not think its the New York hot dogs or jet lag.

Bwahahaha! Hindi kaya nakainom si PNoy? 🙂

Noynoy is obsessed with his bffs! 🙂

Big companies hire people based on their qualifications. They sometimes even hire (pirate) people from rival companies if they think that person can help the company earn more profit.
Maybe PNoy should act like a CEO of a big multi-national company and get people into his team based on their qualifications and even get people from previous administration if they can help him achieve his goals for the betterment of the country. Not hire people based on trust alone. A person maybe trustworthy and loyal to you, but what if he’s incompetent?

Noynoy created a jigsaw puzzle of himself for everybody to solve where everyone ended up rolling their eyes, shaking and scratching their heads, for being unable to find the proper place to put his head, brain, mouth, etc.

Please be warned that the puzzle is very challenging and trying to solve it maybe bad for one’s health….. May end up just like the …puzzle.

Mike, insecurity ang issue. 🙂 Ayan, deretsong sinabi ni kuya Noy. “One thing we have to watch out for is if these people who have been with us when we were still in the harassed opposition and who joined us in our struggles…if all these people who are close to us are removed and replaced by those who are not as close, the next group could already be our enemies,”

@florry #7, the puzzle is not challenging. PNoy’s mental retardation is painfully obvious to see. How did he win an election? That question is the real challenge.

  11. NFA rice NFA rice

The difficult question to answer is how did he become the President of 90 million people?

President Aquino must be reminded here that not all “frineds” are trustworthy…sometimes and more often, they are the ones that will take advantage of the Trust and Confidence you invested on them…in a transparent government he was promising, let anyone qualified and competent handle the jobs instead of close friends that now are showing who they really are.

    Quote of the day

A lot of our people who belong to the best elements will have nothing to do with politics because they believe it is dirty. In other words, they leave politics to those who are not so clean, and then wonder why the government does not run as well as it should; the opposition to have anything to do with it, they say, is that they themselves may get contaminated.

  17. Observer Observer

There is nothing wrong delegating high government positions to Noynoy’s friends as long as they have the qualifications to do the job, competent or capable of doing it. The problem comes in if his friends are clueless like Noynoy in the government positions that they have. They are all incompetent.

  18. Mon Mon

Cheap and senseless “pa-effect!” And definitely lacking in concern for the inconvenience his stunt had on his security detail and those people who couldn’t care less if he likes New York-style hotdog on a bun.

If he really wanted to enjoy an inexpensive meal, he could have just sent someone to buy lunch for his entourage. Kulang sa pansin? Or, super OA? Either way, it is a dumb stunt to prove his “austere” form of leadership. Austere, yes, but in the brain and leadership department.

  19. Isagani Isagani

I don’t think it’s the New York hot dog or jet lag. I think it’s Noynoy’s weak character. He shows his weakness and bias for family and friends.

I just hope Noynoy is not “tagilid”, although there is nothing wrong with that. But there are signs: single, sobrang dikit nila ni Puno, at may tantrum pag naipit(incoherent, tulad ng mga salita niya sa salaysay ni Pimentel) at medyo effeminate umarte.

Okay, that is just my observation and I may be totally wrong.

So, hopefully, Noynoy takes a deep breath, count to 100, reflect and say, “What the fuck did I say to the press! I’ve gotta get off my butt, set things right as I promised and kick ass!”

  20. baycas2 baycas2

    Oops, “can’t” the press wait?

    —–

Recently, I heard Teddy Locsin [along with his “Karambola” (DWIZ) colleagues] warned Ricky Carandang to be on the lookout for a flying shoe aimed at the president. Being at the receiving end of this shoe-throwing practice will certainly humble a man.

  21. Mon Mon

Oh, and leadership is not so much about having friends close by, it is about hiring the right people who get the job done. That’s why they are called professionals – you trust their integrity and rely on their competence… Then you go out with your friends.

Hotdog?

Hanapin niya yung halal (halal is to the Arabs, what kosher is to the Jews) guy, at umorder siya ng lamb gyro, samahan niya ng basmati rice. Well-ranked yan, pati mga sosyal pumipila. In fact, ang pila, talagang mahaba. Guys in suits and corporate chicks line up there.

I learned this from a Pinoy VP of Citibank. I tried it, masarap nga.

In fct, malapit ang presinto diyan.

President Noynoy’s disappointing performance in his first 100 days has indisputably brought enormous buyer’s remorse to many of his fans, the feeling that the “purchase” (i.e., voting for Noynoy) was a mistake.Compare his specific promises and the realities of today.

It depends really on one’s point of view and knowledge to available information (esp. if there’s political color)…

As I heard it on radio, the TRO on the QC demolition would only last for a day until such time (with the ongoing court dispute) when the court will decide on the squatters’ fate.

P.Noy stepping in may have come too late; nonetheless, it’s a welcome move for those squatters resisting their relocation.

  70. Freedom of speech works both ways, anyone should be free to speak his mind, even the president, not just the press…

wala pang result… ang dumi na ng isip… what can clearly see the problem of this country… is it really the govt? or its people?

A friend from NYC who attended PNoy’s “Pep talk,” says that his speech is nothing to write home about, that it’s ok at best.

I asked him, if he knew the sentiment in Pinas about the hostage crisis issue, it’s impact and incidence. He said yes, though not that well, but practically everyone he spoke to who knows whats going on are of the same belief that PNoy should be quick and decisive and must fire R.Puno asap!

Pnoy is losing credibility on his campaign promises and the longer he procrastinates the faster his image deteriorates.

You commented on the statement of Ochoa, wala pang result youg ginagawang review ni Ochoa.

is it our nature as a people (or maybe the entire human race) that in this article that is critical of pnoy, there are 80 plus comments, mostly negative,
while in the previous article which praises pnoy (“aquino scores in transparency”)there are only 4 comments so far?

  85. perl perl

see? yan ang problema.. ‘people’… naghahanap tayo ng mali… mas masarap kasi ang mali… try to find the ‘positive’ side… ilagay natin sarili natin sa situation ni PNoy… and i’m sure.. you will understand his actions and decisions…

I really thank God at sya ang naging presidente…

    God Bless our country!

    # 103 and 104:

It is the speech writer whom I criticized, because I want the President of my country to look as good as his Mother did, courtesy of Teddy Boy Locsin.

It is also Kris whom I have little respect for, not all women. In your desire to point out my alleged bigotry, you have revealed yours, calling me a fag. Manuel Quezon III is one of the people around the President. He is openly gay.
    http://salaswildthoughts.blogspot.com/2006/08/former-supreme-court-justice-isagani.html

He would have written a better speech.

You have made ad hominem attacks on me, not my posts – calling me a coward, a has been notary public, now a fag. I am not gay, but I would not deny it if I were one. I would even be an activist for their cause.

You can add one more thing to hate in me. I am slant-eyed as well, although with the dark complexion of an Ilocano (a few shades lighter than Binay).

You are an underclassman (1989)of my friend Michael Ray Aquino (1988). Unlike them, you chose the business world over the Armed Forces. I am sending MRA a copy of the complaint of the Dacer sisters today. I’m sure, in his reply, MRA will regale me about your excellent performance as a cadet.

Perhaps a quote from the Desiderata may help temper your posts:

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant (and has been notaries); they too have their story.

This is my last reply to you, in observance of the advice of the Desiderata, to

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

There’s an unwritten rule to never criticize the president (legitimate, of course) while he is abroad. Can the press wait for P.Noy to be home?

    I never recognized that rule.

  109. chi chi

  110. Ganyan din ang sabi ng mga Kano. “We can criticize Obama whenever and wherever we like”. Sagot ng Russian, “Same here, we can also criticize Obama anytime”.
