Aquino criticized for buying luxury sportscar

From ABS-CBN, Agence France-Presse:

Aquino's P4.5 M source of joy
President Benigno Aquino III said Thursday he had splashed out on a luxury Porsche sportscar, sparking criticism in a country where a third of the population live on less than a dollar a day.

“It appeared to be out of character. He had campaigned against luxury cars and here he is buying a Porsche,” Milo Tanchuling, secretary general of the activist group Freedom from Debt Coalition, told AFP.

Aquino doth protest too much on Porsche?

President Aquino yesterday said there is nothing wrong if he bought a 2007 model white Porsche at a cost of P4.5 million late last year which he said was his own money.

Aquino, in a chance interview after the oath-taking ceremony of the Liga ng mga Barangay members at the SMX Convention Center, said he is only enjoying and spending his money the way he wants it.

“There is a danger that it will be viewed by many as a sign of extravagance and an unnecessary flaunting of wealth amid massive poverty.”

Is Aquino saying that protection of drug traffickers is national interest?

There is something wrong here.

President Aquino said the Philippine government boycotted the awarding of the Nobel peace prize to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo in exchange for the freedom of five Filipinos in the death row in China for drug trafficking.

Are we condoning drug trafficking?

What happens now to our own fight against illegal drugs? If we ask foreign governments to relax their laws against Filipinos involved in trafficking of illegal drugs, have we the right to be hard on other nationalities involved in drug trafficking in our own country?

Aquino admits dating Liz Uy

(I did not want to join the frenzy over President Aquino’s lovelife but since it seems many of you are interested, here it is. He is appealing to media to allow him to keep his lovelife private, yet he also talked about it in an interview while attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders meeting.)

YOKOHAMA, Japan – For the first time since news swirled around of a new romance in his life about two months ago, President Aquino confirmed reports he and his personal stylist Liz Uy are dating.

Interviewed here on the eve of the 18th APEC Leaders’ Meeting, the 50-year-old bachelor said he saw nothing wrong if he and the 28-year-old stylist spent time together every now and then.

“We have been spending time together as our schedules would permit, but I guess, at this point in time, that is the extent of it,” said the president, in response to queries from reporters.

Despite controversies, Aquino enjoys high performance and trust rating – Pulse Asia

Despite fumblings, enjoying high ratings
President Aquino enjoys approval and trust of the people despite several controversies in his five-month presidency as shown in the survey conducted by Pulse Asia last month.

In a nationwide survey conducted Oct 20 to 29, 2010, Pulse Asia said Aquino registered a performance rating of 79 per cent and trust rating of 80 per cent.

Pulse Asia said this is the first time they have conducted a survey on Aquino’s performance and the people’s trust on him as president because in the July 2010 survey they conducted, “although the President had already been proclaimed as such, survey respondents were asked to rate his performance during his last three months in the Senate.”

In the July 2010 survey, Aquino got an 88 per cent performance and 85 per cent trust rating.

Mahirap maintindihan

(Click here (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/video/nation/11/04/10/robredo-paje-will-remain-acting-secretaries#ooid=EyOXhzMTpCpQqBRBayqrfp6jbEvV0RS0) for the news report that included the Failon’s interview with Aquino.)

Aquino laments SC action favoring Arroyo midnight appointees

Statement of President Aquino on the Issuance of a Status Quo Ante Order Regarding Executive Order No. 2
by the Supreme Court

Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued a Status Quo Ante Order granting the motion of Bai Omera Dianalan-Lucman. She was one of four people who filed petitions before the Supreme Court questioning the constitutionality of Executive Order No. 2, but the Supreme Court only acted on Lucman.

We issued Executive Order No. 2 recalling, withdrawing, or revoking midnight appointments, because the previous administration had exceeded and abused the limits of its powers to appoint.

We had to issue EO2 because there were people who accepted illegal appointments. By knowingly accepting illegal appointments, they became part of a conspiracy to impede and to thwart, our people’s clamor for a return to good governance.

We put in their place people who shared our aims. Our appointees allowed us to discover questionable deals, which we immediately stopped. For instance, our appointees uncovered close to a billion pesos worth of anomalous contracts that had been entered into during the past administration. We have cancelled those contracts and saved the government hundreds of millions of pesos.

Aquino’s 100th day message

At the La Consolacion College
Maraming salamat po, maupo po ho tayong lahat.

Vice President Jejomar Binay, members of the Cabinet, our host led by Sister Imelda, honored guests, fellow workers in government, mga minamahal ko pong kababayan, magandang umaga po sa inyong lahat.
