Pacquiao’s ‘abhorrent’ remarks could be blessing in disguise

Two days after boxing icon Manny Pacquiao rebuked same sex couples as worse than animals, shoe giant Nike dropped him as endorser.

That was fast.

Observers said that was an easy decision for Nike because Pacquiao, 37, is at the sunset of his career after losing in two major fights: the one against Floyd Mayweather in May 2015 and earlier, in December 2013, to Juan Manuel Marquez. He says his April 9 fight with Timothy Bradley would be his last, although he has said it before with his other fights and went on to do more.

Nike’s announcement: “We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”
It’s a knockout punch for Pacquiao whose endorsements make up the bulk of his boxing earnings. His camp is worried, we are told, that other sponsors might follow Nike.

Although Pacquiao, a senatorial candidate under the United Nationalist Alliance, said he remains against same-sex marriage despite his apology, he must be regretting what he told News5 last Monday. It was a standard question asked of every candidate running for a national position.

Pacquiao said: “As Christian, bawal naman ‘yung same-sex marriage.

The reactions from the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community and their supporters were swift and emotional. Prominent gay celebrities like Vice Ganda and Boy Abunda issued statements that matched Pacquiao’s acidic quotes.

Abunda and Vice Ganda said they are not voting for Pacquiao for the Senate.

Why, if Pacquiao didn’t malign the LGBTs, Abunda and Vice Ganda were considering voting for him for senator?

This controversy over Paquiao’s “abhorrent” comments, to borrow from Nike, might yet turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
Pacquiao is considered a sure winner for senator in the May elections. All surveys put him within the Magic 12 even when he is not campaigning so much because he is busy preparing for his April fight with Bradley.

It is expected that voters will send him to the Senate despite the fact that his performance as congressman was dismal. He was a perennial absentee in Congress. In 2014, he only attended, four as in 1,2,3,4 sessions. A Philippine Star report said he has filed about a dozen bills but none has passed any of the committees they have been referred to, the first hurdle in the legislative mill.

Yet he collects all the emoluments due a member of Congress which runs into millions of pesos without giving the taxpayers the service due them. That is theft.

Pacquaio went into politics with a distorted sense of public service. In an interview with him in 2010 when he was running for Saranggani congressman, I asked him why he had to be a congressman to help the people when he was already doing it without being in government.

He replied: “Pera ko ang ginagastos ko. Kawawa naman ang pamilya ko. Mauubos ang pera ko.”

A Feb. 14 post in his Facebook page showed rows of low-cost houses captioned: “I’m so happy giving this (sic) houses free to my constituents in Sarangani Province from my own pocket more than thousand families are the beneficiaries. And I’m still building more because i always believe what the Bible says; 1 Peter 4:8-10 NIV.”

Some maybe duped by this tale about Pacquaio’s generosity. But it’s not his personal money that was used to build the houses for his Saranggani constituents. It’s the Filipino people’s money that he collected as congressman without even working for it.
That way, he can continue to be “generous” at hindi mauubos ang pera niya.

If this controversy would make many people not vote for Pacquiao, then, we can only quote from Romans 11:33: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”

– May kasabihang “medaling maging tao, mahirap magpaka tao.”

Pinairal nila yung sensitivity kasi mayroon silang ego.

Pagkatapos niyan may finals pa.

Free publicity for Manny and Nike. Both are now getting mileage on CNN and major international media outfits. Wonder what is Walden Bello going to do about that?

At this rate, difficult to see how he is going to lose. Fortunately, he did not run for president. LGBTs happy with Nike. Nike probably happy with that, too. Lost me as a customer though.

Buying Adidas and Under Armour tomorrow. Would not be caught dead wearing Nike at times like these.

My friends have always had a mean streak of humor. Nowadays, they poke fun at everyone they see wearing Nike – calling them gay.

    Some of their one-liners:

Vice Ganda now has a shot at becoming Nike’s next celebrity endorser.

Upcoming Nike ad – Wear Nike and bring out the animal in you.

They used to come out of the closet. Now, they come out of the zoo.

DEPED orders recall of textbooks: “animal kingdom” to be rewritten as “animal queendom”

Headline: PETA FILES CASE AGAINST PACQUIAO

Yes. My friends have a mean sense of humor and they are now itching to vote for Pacquiao.

All because government and politics are more fun in the Philippines.

    Sad, eh?

  4. Yes, Lee, sad. Sadder still if Pacquiao becomes senator which I think he will.

Pacquiao comments on regards to Homosequals will soon be forgotten, same as Duterte curse on the Pope.. Pacquiao advisers knew it, but perhaps the Nike dropping him was unexpected. It is still at least a $1 million a year in Royalty/ not a chicken feed . If he can “avoid” paying taxes in the Phil ,Pacquiao using his Freedom of religion and conscience to Promote Hatred against an identifiable group is a very hypocritical for an individual who is an Adulterer and a womanizer. But. Then again, he could be someday the president of the Philippines. The way he still gets the support after his latest outburst. Too many hard punches can do
That to an already unstable man. Well another one in the senate would not any difference.

Inangkopo!

It’s sad to hear from one of the most popular person in the world say those things that he himself don’t seem to fully understand and comprehend. In the western world, discrimination is a NO NO! It will cost him $$$ and respect of the world…if not lawsuit.
Now he enters philippine politics to run as senator. Can he not see, many well known personalities in our country who wants to be a senator or congressman wants the position for something else and not really to serve, and he wants to be one like them? a spiritual person he claim that he is? Seems like a classic example of the meaning of the word DAMN ASS DIOT! and our kababayan will more likely vote for him!
He should wake up for the sake of himself and his family…We should wake up for the sake of our country.

who knows. we might have a president of unknown parents and a senator who boxed his way to wealth and success. i have nothing against both but i have against children of bandits.

#1. golddigger, este goldberg. may tama ka diyan. sa katunayan ay totoo naman ang sinasabi ni pakyu. para sa kanya, marriage is a union between a man and a woman and another woman and another woman and another woman.

We only get what we deserve.

  14. MPRivera MPRivera

tungkol naman sa magiging panalo kung sakali ni pakyu as senator, it is the bulk of pinoy bobotantes who will give victory to the reverend pastor coach pambansang bangas actor singer point guard pakyu.

as for me, KAHIT isang aso ng malakanyang ay wala akong iboboto. i have only one senate returnee while the rest are already tested in their respective profession and political careers.

for VP and president wala pa. meron sana pero naggudbay na at nandu’n na sa langit.

Sorry, but pano masasabing Manny P. stole the money he received from the government when that’s supposed to be his salary/allowance/benefits/etc.? So, tama yung sinabi niya na it’s his money he used to build the houses kasi instead of using it for his family’s benefits (whether he is truly deserving of the salary / allowance / benefits is another topic altogether) he used it to build houses and then gave it back to the people.

Para sa kin, that act is better. I mean, he’s not perfect…there’s a lot about Manny P. that can and should be improved, but taking his salary and using it to give back to the people instead of spending it for holidays, tours or expensive cars….
