Pray for Jayjay

Update on Jonas: Cory Aquino to govt: Where’s Jonas Burgos?

Here’s Malacañang’s directive.

edith-burgos.jpgWhat struck me in that Pieta-like picture of Edith Burgos holding the picture of her missing son was the close resemblance of Jonas Joseph (Jayjay) to his father Joe Burgos, press freedom crusader and founder of We Forum and Malaya.

A witness to the abduction of Jayjay surfaced the other night at ABS-CBN after he saw Edith appealing for help to find her son.

The witness who hid under the name “Randy” said he saw Jayjay eating alone at the Hapag-Kainan restaurant at the Ever Gotesco Mall on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City about 1 p.m. when four “bodyguard-looking” men approached him. At first, Randy said, one of guys put his hand on Jayjay shoulders. “Hinihimas-himas,” was Randy’s description. I can imagine that it was a hard massage that the bodyguard-looking guy was applying on Jayjay.

Randy related that all of a sudden the burly men pulled Jayjay from his seat and forcefully brought him out of the mall. Jayjay was shouting, “Tulungan nyo ako! Dinudukot ako! Aktibista ako!” (Help me! I’m being abducted! I’m an activist!)

Randy said nobody dared help Jayjay. “Then everything went back to normal in the mall,” he said.

What Jayjay did, shouting and asking for help, is one of the tips in “staying alive” for journalists and activists in these dangerous times.

A former colleague in Malaya last night texted me they have information that it was elements of ISAFP (Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines) that abducted Jayjay. “Please pray,” she said.

I’m praying that Jayjay, married and a father to a one-year old baby, be given the strength to survive what he is going through. I’m also praying that God touch the conscience of his abductors and stop their malevolent operation.

An agriculture graduate of Benguet State University, Jayjay is a member of Alyansa ng Magbubukid, a chapter of militant peasant organization Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), which is in the watchlist of the military.

The morning before he was abducted Jayjay conducted a seminar on organic farming.

It’s easy to imagine where Jayjay got his interest in agriculture and concern for the plight of the disadvantaged. After retiring from journalism, Joe Burgos took up farming in Bulacan.

I can’t remember particularly Jayjay when he was much younger. He is 36 years old now so he must have been 13 years old when he and his brothers and sister would do summer work in Malaya as copy boys or proofreaders while we were pushing the limits of press freedom under a dictatorship.

He must have been 11 years old when his father, grandfather, uncle, and friends of his father who were columnists of We Forum, Malaya’s sister-publication, were arrested and jailed in December 1982 for publishing stories critical of Ferdinand Marcos, especially about his fake war medals which US publications picked up three years later.

Jayjay was just six years old when his father decided that he would not allow martial law to curtail his right to inform the public about the truth. We Forum’s first issue came out on May 1, 1977. That marked the birth of the alternative press.

Tapping 18 campus editors as correspondents, Joe gave the Filipino public stories that would not see print in the mainstream newspapers. On the day the first copies of We Forum hit the streets, the Metrocom (Metropolitan Command of the Philippine Constabulary) arrested three of the student editors covering the Labor Day rally.

That was exactly 30 years ago. Today, the life of the son of a man who helped regain our freedom is in peril under the custody of unidentified elements of repression. It’s as if nothing has changed.

From where he is now, Joe Burgos must be in grief.

my group of prayer warriors are praying for jayjay.

  2. Spy Spy

This govt forced us to become helpless and leaved us with only one option: pray.
Nobody is safe under gloria and esperon. Let’s expect another abduction will happend soon.

Did the AFP offer help to find Jayjay?

  3. Spy Spy

…and left us with one option

  4. kitamokitako kitamokitako

For sure, kung walang sinasabi o ginagawang investigation tungkol dito ang gobyernong Glue at Assperon, o tulong para hanapin siya, that means they are behind the abduction. No action = (equals) guilty.

  5. chi chi

The fact that not even a single soul tried to help or interfere in the abduction of Jayjay, which was done before the eyes of probably hundreds of shoppers in a big mall, only proved that the fake commander-in-cheat and her super security Assperon are gaining success in instilling fear among the people. The duo has turned us into a nation of cowards! Please tell me I’m wrong.

  6. cocoy cocoy

In my opinion Jayjay is in safe location and he is well taking care off. Jayjay is a precious bargaining chips, being a family of newspaper publisher, who has no fear in publishing anomalous and scandalous against this present administration. Malaya is critical to them and they want to silence it.

  7. chi chi

Jake Macasaet is the current owner/publisher of Malaya, di ba Ellen?

    Ellen,
I don’t get it. This witness claims the abduction happened at about 1 PM of Saturday. Your earlier post says the last time Burgos was seen was while he was leaving the house at about 5pm, of Saturday, too!

Only one can be true, right? Unless…he was forced to take something out of the house and returned to his kidnappers, which also sounds absurd.

  9. Chi,

Re “The duo has turned us into a nation of cowards! Please tell me I’m wrong.”

It’s difficult not to believe that cowardice has become the credo of a lot of people in the country when you hear such story.

Esperon, this frigging plonker of a morally coward military thief of staff must return Jayjay to his family.

Ellen, What has Gloria said? Nothing?

May she die a thousand agonizing deaths along with her pillock of a fatso, greedy husband.

I fervently hope that Jayjay is still alive.

Golly, baka matulad ang sitwasyon nang mapatay din iyong isa pang Burgos more than a century ago that sparked the Philippine revolution against Spain! Remember the execution of the GOMBURZA?

  16. Tongue, yes, there’s a discrepancy there. It must have been the reporting. I’ll check.

  17. parasabayan parasabayan

I am constantly praying for the safety of those who were abducted and also those who engineered the abduction. It just takes one good soul to save another. Not all those who abduct people are hard core criminals. Some simply needed some money. They have to survive like anyone else.

I always pray that the good prevail over the bad at all times. There is always a soft spot in everyone’s heart. Let us just hope that Jayjay is in a safe place.

  18. cocoy cocoy

If Jayjay was only kidnapped for ransom the abductor had already rang the phone and in the process of negotiation, and that’s their business. But, everyone is puzzled in this situation and Jayjay knew his abductors and asked somebody to help him in the process. His abduction are likely to deepen the perception that the government remains adamant about not allowing greater political liberties.

  19. cocoy cocoy

If Jayjay is my son,I will dig my buried armory and do a Rambo style.

  20. Tongue, I just talked with Edith Burgos. I was wrong in my first report about the time. I based it in a statement sent by a group helping the Burgos family last Monday.

Edith said Jayjay is based in Bulacan. He was expected in their house in Quezon City Saturday afternoon for a family meeting. He never came.

Edith said she doesn’t know what time Jayjay left the house in Bulacan.

  21. There is a big difference when the police is under the military. It becomes inefficient because police work is not the same as soldiering. The function of the military is to kill the enemy. The police is to solve a crime. I should know. I have worked with the police in Japan, and over here the police is under a civilian commission, not a military, and it has a reputation to preserve—a 99.9% reputation of solving a crime, the 1% is for a rare miss!!!

  22. Over in the Philippines, solving a crime is more publicity, and if they cannot solve one with their own people involved in the perpetration of the crime, they either invent stories, present false witnesses, and worst, parade framed up “perpetrators”!

I wonder who that Randy is. Hopefully, he was telling the truth. Otherwise, may he also rot in hell! Bearing false witness is a crime.

This Baccero (pronounced as Bakero, which is in Japanese is “PIN”), should stop defending the military but allow the prosecutor’s office and the police to do their duties. He should not be too defensive. Nice try, gago!

Nanglilito pa ang mga ungas if that is the purpose of this Randy who can even be a military false witness like the crying lady who said she saw how Aquino was shot when she was not even at the door or the window of the plane where Ninoy was a passenger. What a crap!

  24. Gloria Arroyo has not issued a statement on the abduction of Jayjay Burgos.

But Edith Burgos said Press Secretary Bunye called her up and extended his usual sympathy and assured her that the proper agencies are working to find Jonas.

Bakit pakawalan na ba siya ng ISAFP?

  25. dzandueta dzandueta

The fact that not even a single soul tried to help or interfere in the abduction of Jayjay, which was done before the eyes of probably hundreds of shoppers in a big mall, only proved that the fake commander-in-cheat and her super security Assperon are gaining success in instilling fear among the people.

Either that or people don’t care. I hope I’m wrong on that, too.

  26. Mrivera Mrivera

  27. Right after the bombing of Plaza Miranda in 1971, talk was ripe about the impending declaration of martial law. Everybody believed it but nobody took precautions. Jayjay’s abduction in broad daylight, the militarization of urban areas, the continuous harassment of political activists, the stiffling of dissent- all these seem to point to another impending declaration of martial law. Some believe it, some don’t. Are we waiting for another Plaza Miranda? If and when that happens, who among us will take the needed precautions?

  28. Mrivera Mrivera

Arroyo turns May 1 rites into poll campaign

    05/02/2007

President Arroyo yesterday turned the Labor Day celebrations into a campaign sortie for her senatorial and party-list candidates in the May 14 elections.

In an apparent bid to lure workers to vote for Team Unity senatorial and congressional bets, the President vowed the government and her allies in both the Senate and the House of Representatives will pass a law that would exempt minimum wage earners from paying income tax.

Glo, any way you look at it, your in the _hit at last.

And Abalos-loss of Comelec already opined that Arroyo’s promised of labor incentives IF (only If the Administration’s Team win) is not vote buying. That’s was Quick.

Raymond Burgos, columnist and cousin of Jayjay

  39. A civilised country has no need for an outfit such as ISAFP we need to get professional and transparent. Get rid of these thugs, they’re a breeding ground for violent acts against the Filipino citizen with no accountability what-so-ever.
I wonder what reaction there would be if a member of the cabinet, administration or congress was forceably abducted. Less face it whilst no AFP, PNP, NBI admit they know anything, its not safe for high profile personalities in government either! An evil copy-cat situation is not impossible.
Cardinal Rosales what is happening to the morals of our country?.

  40. chi chi

Ellen, pls disregard my request above, I got it already. Thanks.

Former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino, for her part, appealed to “the highest authorities of the land to send the clear signal to the field, that Jonas Burgos must be surfaced immediately by whoever is holding him, and that no harm must come to him.”

“If any organs of the state have a case whatsoever against him, we believe that Jonas must be allowed to defend himself in court, and not become part of the statistics of the disappeared and others who have fallen victim to extra-judicial punishment in these troubled times,” Aquino said in a statement.

Enough is enough.

  45. Salonga sees Marcos in Arroyo, Ver in Esperon
By Norman Bordadora, Nikko Dizon Inquirer
    — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s decision to call out the military to help police disband private armies, man 24-hour checkpoints and stop political killings has prompted ex-Senate President Jovito Salonga to warn that the May 14 elections could turn out to be as “violent and fraudulent” as the Marcos-era polls.
In an open letter sent Tuesday to the President through Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, Salonga called on Ms Arroyo to ensure the peace and the credibility of the midterm elections so as not to worsen current problems, including the continuing killings.

Thanks for the clarification, Ellen. It wasn’t just you, even some papers reported the same thing.

    —-

If it hasn’t reached the wires yet, let me break it that just this afternoon, the Appelate Court threw out the petition of the lawyers of UP coeds Karen Empeño, Sheryl Cadapan, and farmer Manuel Merino to hold Ex-General Palparan in contempt for failing to heed the summons of the court for him to appear before it last August 2006. The judge said Palparan must be excused for being sick and that the absence was substantiated by a medical certificate.

Dang! If it takes all of nine months before a mere petition for contempt is decided, we might as well be prepared to accept that again, nothing will ever come out of this case. This is just another futile attempt at justice. 3 more names appended to the list of victims of Gloria’s killing spree.

I’m terribly aghast at the way victims and their families (I hope not in this case of Jayjay Burgos) will always have to wait ages before the unbelievably slow wheels of justice begin to grind, while the perpetrators and brains enjoy the perks and privileges of their complicity with the murderous regime that Gloria leads.

Too many precious innocent lives wasted. Me and my family condemn the Burgos abduction, in the same token, the Empeño/Cadapan/Martin abduction, and all other forced disappearances, to the fullest degree. I can only pray that these dastardly evil acts of this diabolic twin, the civilian-military pseudo-government, and the seeming impunity whereby such acts are condoned or even encouraged, be stopped NOW and the offenders brought to REAL justice – both human and divine.

Let’s also pray that these young men and women won’t later be found in another mass grave and again falsely-attributed to anyone or any group critical of this bestial mini-dictator that calls herself president.

  47. chi chi

Or she had no prior knowledge (as usaual) and is really no longer in control, taga-pop na lang siya ng champagne!

  48. chi chi

I agree with Spy when he said that “This govt forced us to become helpless and left us with one option: pray.” There’s one more option, REBOLUSYON!

  49. TonGuE-tWisTeD TonGuE-tWisTeD

10th District of California Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher has officially written Gloria:

“In order to stem the ongoing extrajudicial killings and to renew public faith in the political and military institutions in the Philippines, I urge you to move quickly to prosecute those responsible for the crimes and to make clear that political policy toward the left-wing parties in Congress does not extend to the condoning of murder as tactic to limit these parties from operating freely,” she said.

“Moreover, I urge you to not only provide legitimate political space for leftist groups, but to also ensure that counterinsurgency strategy, especially at the local level, does not include extrajudicial killings of political activists,” she said.

US State Dep’t says RP press freedom ‘deteriorating’

From The Daily Tribune website (www.tribune.net.ph/headlines/20070503hed5.html):

The United States said on Wednesday that press freedom in the Philippines is “deteriorating.”

In a statement, the US State Department lumped the Philip-pines along with Afghanistan, Venezuela, Pakistan, Russia, Egypt and Lebanon on its list of countries with “deteriorating conditions for press freedom.”

“We are… concerned about increasing limitations on press freedoms around the world. In many countries, governments are tightening libel laws, media ownership is increasingly controlled by governments and pro-government forces, the number of independent press outlets is declining, restrictions on Internet search engines and the rights of citizens to express themselves freely over the Internet are multiplying, and those who try to independently seek, receive or disseminate information and ideas are being persecuted,” the State Department said.

    —–

I can’t find the link wherein US Ambassador Kenney subtly suggests to the Phil. Gov’t to treat US companies fairly in a bidding that is viewed by the US State Department as favoring Chinese bidders. The US seems to be pressuring Gloria on many fronts.

Protest march set for Burgos son on Friday

    Inquirer
Last updated 08:28am (Mla time) 05/03/2007

MANILA, Philippines — A march protesting the abduction of Jonas Joseph Burgos, son of the late press freedom icon Joe Burgos, will be held 3 p.m. on Friday.

Protesters will assemble near the Robinsons Mall at the corner of EDSA (Epifanio delos Santos Avenue) and Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong City and march toward the People Power Monument beside Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

The event is organized by the Amado V. Hernandez Resource Center.

A manifesto will be read at the People Power Monument protesting the increase in number of forced disappearances.

  51. chi:
Its nice to read your comment about the protest march.
In fact there should be different groups consisting of all sectors of the population with a show of united force marching every single day protesting to show the disgust of the population until even the schizo mind of this evil woman gets the message loud and clear.
Give the PNP & Afp some practise at crowd control because I feel they will be needing it in the not too distant future!

  52. chi chi

    WWNL,

I think that we should take advantage of this protest march for Burgos to show our disgust of the evil one in EK, and we should do it daily until she’s dead!

Ellen, can you email me a picture of JayJay. I also plan to use the above pictures to show to the human rights now members who are sponsoring the meeting with Philipp Alston at the Tokyo University on Tuesday.

There will be a big demonstration planned by Japanese concern when Burot comes to Tokyo on May 22nd.

Apparently, no matter what she does, the Burot is done. All she needs to do now is exit!

    Ellen,

Ang daming wasted na buhay under this fake presidency!

(UPDATE) EU expresses shock over Burgos abduction

    ‘Culture of impunity’ scored

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The European Union has expressed “shock” over the abduction of Jonas Joseph Burgos, son of the late newspaperman Jose “Joe” Burgos Jr.

Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, head of delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, also expressed hope that the young Burgos would show up safe.
    ….
“Here in the Philippines, hardly a day goes by without a fresh reminder of the essential importance of human rights. Just this week we’ve seen the appalling case of the abduction of Jonas Burgos and two companions here in Quezon City,” he said.

MacDonald lauded the Commission on Human Rights for investigating the case. However, he noted the “culture of impunity” that had allowed it to happen.

“Frankly, I’m shocked about what this suggests about a culture of impunity in this country,” he said.

“This [abduction] simply confirms that the human rights situation in the Philippines is a matter of great concern,” he added.
