Malacañang announced that Mike Arroyo, husband of Gloria Arroyo, has decided to withdraw all libel suits he filed against 46 journalists.
Part of Arroyo’s statement read by Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye: “In sincere gratitude to a nation that deserves a more harmonious leadership, and as a gesture of peace to the many kind hearts who have helped my family weather this crisis, I have instructed my attorneys to withdraw all the libel suits pending before the courts.
“Seeking redress for all the grievances that the libel soughts to address now pales in comparison to taking on a genuine chance to make peace and to pursue a more positive and constructive relationship with those who will accept my offer of a handshake.
“I am determined to keep in touch with the God that has been magnanimous to me, and to let His spirit of generosity steer me through any future conflicts.”
My reaction:
I’m glad that mike Arroyo near-death experience has made him see the light. I hope the libel suits were not the only ones he saw.

I object to any motion that seeks dismissal of libel cases filed against me, editors and reporters of Malaya.
It is my determination to get a verdict based on the merits of the case, and not on the mercy of the complainant, First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.
I will not owe my freedom to him.
Maritess Vitug, editor-in-chief of Newsbreak issued the following statement:
We are glad that the First Gentleman has seen the light. But he should never have filed these cases inthe first place. We would like this matter to be resolved on its merits. This will provide journalists with parameters on libel and what it is not.
Those of us who filed a class suit against Mike Arroyo will be meeting very soon on our reaction to his withdrawal of the libel suits but this is the advice of our lawyer Harry Roque:
Suit should proceed. At issue is freedom of the speech as a right. It’s not dependent on the acts of Mike Arroyo. Besides he has already caused damage both actual and moral.
It’s a welcome announcement. But don’t take it as a ”utang na loob.”
May you and other journalists continue to find the truth.

Is this has something to do with US State Department’s concern about RP press freedom is deteriorating? Continued killings of journalists and increased legal harassment (multiple libel suits) by First Gentleman Miguel Arroyo are seen as assault to press freedom. Maybe dropping the libel suits is PR or pogi points to Uncle Sam and for continuing US support of discredited Arroyo regime. Uncle Sam is not happy regarding human rights abuses committed by security forces. Big Mike’s near-death experience may have seen sufferings in hell. Probably Satan gave him a chance to reform and it would be better if she can convince her wife Gloria to resign for the best interest of the Filipino people. I think that this is a good move by Mike Arroyo. But whatever it was that he started, he should face the consequences.
Negative reactions to his offer of withrawal of the libel cases just proves that the ill will he and his family has accumulated has become so huge that a good (but whose motive is questionable) gesture can’t erase anymore.

Instead of the withdrawal of the suits, he should publicly apologize to the Filipino people for trying to curtail the freedom of speech. Mr. Macasaet is right. Let the suits continue and then we will see which of these judges handling the cases have the stones to decide on what is right.

MANILA, Philippines — Saying that “everyone deserves a second chance,” Genuine Opposition senatorial candidate Alan Peter Cayetano has accepted First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo’s “gesture of peace,”
“In accepting the handshake, I want the First Family to know that it was never personal. It was in the spirit of consistency of asking for accountability and transparency in government which we will continue to fight for,” said Cayetano who has become the First Gentleman’s arch enemy for claiming that the First Family had stashed millions of dollars in a German bank.
Cayetano had called for a “ceasefire” in attacks on the President’s husband “until he has recovered and wishes to address any of the issues raised by the opposition.”

I doubt very much that Mike Arroyo has seen the light, or his near-death encounter with illness made him change his attitudes and withdraw his complaints against the defendants, but it is because being the main witness to all the cases, he will be No longer able to handle the stress of testifying against the defendants thereby making the cases Moot for lack of evidence.
Now the payback.. The defendants (or accused if filed under the Criminal Code) could go ahead with counter civil suit against Mr. Mike Arroyo. And in the Civil Cases, the failure of Defendant to appear to defend Himself is forfeiture and the case is awarded to the Plaintiff. This you can consult with your civil lawyers. Have no Mercy…He doesn’t have to appear, just Pay the Damages…

I watched Twink Macaraeg’s phone patch interview with Ms Tordesillas, and I somehow felt the angst as she spoke. Though, it appears to me that she was more forgiving compared to Mr. Macasaet, her voice still betrayed the anger she feels. (Ms Tordesillas, please feel free to comment on my interpretation of that interview you had with Ms Macaraeg).
I am pleased with both Ms Tordesillas’ and Mr. Macasaet’s reactions to Mike Arroyos moves. While I won’t let my guard down, I am also inclined to give Mike Arroyo’s move the benefit of the doubt.
He may have seen the light as far as these libel suits are concerned. Personally, I will draw the line if he speaks up again to say that these brave journalists owe their relief from his dropping of the libel suits.
He must recognize that his move gives relief only to his own conscience, therefore, these journalists do not owe him anything at all.
As far as the class suit against him is concerned, I believe, the Filipino people must see this through. I don’t think it would be proper to drop that lawsuit in a quid pro quo perspective.

Ellen is one of the only two female journalists I fully respect. She’s conscientiously brave and spoke her mind with determination.
As for me, I dont’ give Fartso any benefit of the doubt because I don’t believe whatever he says. If he was true to what he’s saying now “…to taking on a genuine chance to make peace …” and “…to let His spirit of generosity steer me through any future conflicts.”, he should confess publicly all the wrongs he and wife have committed against the people and nation and ask for forgiveness!
