It seems some people are losing their sense of humor these days.
Yesterday, while having a meeting, lawyer Harry Roque got a call from an unidentified male using cell phone number 0906-2053-307 telling him that they didn’t like the pamaypay incident at the Comelec canvassing at the PICC last Wednesday.
Harry immediately put the call on speakerphone for his companion to also hear. The caller told Harry that the pamaypay incident was pambabastos to former Comelec Chairman Virgilio Garcillano who was caught in a telephone conversation with a number of personalities including Gloria Arroyo discussing the rigging of the 2004 election results in favor of Arroyo.
After the call, Harry got the following message from the same cell phone number: “Masyadong malansa ang bunganga mo. Dapat siguro masampolan ka tulad ni Burgos. Pesteng yawa ka.” (You have a foul mouth. You should be taught a lesson like Burgos. You are a devil’s curse.)
No doubt “Burgos” in the message refers to Jonas Burgos, an agriculturist activist and son of freedom icon Joe Burgos who was abducted last April 28 and has not been found up to now. The Burgos family suspects that some members of the military had something to do with the abduction of Jonas.
The pamaypay incident was the silent innovative protest staged by a group of concerned citizens at the morning session of the senatorial canvassing the other day. They arrived at the PICC about 9:30 in the morning. I recognized Harry; Josie Lichauco, former transportation and communications secretary; Fr. Joe Dizon of Kontra-Daya; social scientist Triccie Sison, Princess Nemenzo, Gloria Alcuaz, Georgie Diaz, Bebu Bulchen, and Maria Flor Querubin, wife of detained Marine Colonel Ariel Querubin.
Since silence and decorum are required from the audience during the canvassing, how does one stage a protest?
The group had in their bags home-made cardboard fans with the face of “Hello Garci” on one side and “Election Terrorists” (Gloria Arroyo, Benjamin Abalos, and Virgilio Garcillano) on the other.
An hour later, while Atty. Leila de Lima, lawyer of GO senatorial candidate Alan Cayetano, was questioning the discrepancies in the Davao del Sur Certificates of Canvass, Harry and company brought out their home-made fans and started fanning themselves.
Media took notice and took shots while the group nonchalantly fanned themselves.
Comelec security guards came and told them “placards are prohibited” inside the canvassing area. “What placard?” social scientist Triccie Sison innocently asked the guards.
“Mainit!,” (It’s hot!) Bebu Bulchen complained as she continued to wave her Hello Garci fan.
Comelec security didn’t know what to do with the prim and proper guests. They decided to just let them be.
I don’t know if the building management was responding to the complaints of the group about “the heat” but I noticed the room temperature became colder. I had to put on my jacket.
When Abalos announced the adjournment of the day’s canvassing, the group marched out, still fanning themselves, as TV cameras followed them.
Actually, this is not the first death threat for Harry, who, aside from closely following up the case of former Agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn “Joc Joc” Bolante in the United States, served as the legal counsel of journalists who filed a class suit against Mike Arroyo.
Harry’s death threat came a few hours after unidentified men visited Atty. Jose Bernas, spokesman of election watchdog Namfrel, in his office and shot at him. Fortunately, Bernas was able to duck, retreat quickly to his office, and prevented the gunmen from hitting him. The men fled.
ANC correspondent Ricky Carandang and DZMM reporters Noel Alamar and Anthony Taberna also got death threats. Anthony, who has been unrelenting against election irregularities in his radio commentaries, received the warning through text.
For Ricky and Noel, the grim message was relayed through their contact in Lanao del Sur where they were covering the special election last week.
The message was, “Lumayo kayo diyan kay Carandang at baka masaktan kayo kung tirahin naming sila.” (Stay away from Carandang or you might get hurt when we hit him.
The threat came after Ricky and Noel’s exposé on the transfer of election returns for Lanao del Sur special elections from the municipal treasurer, as stated in Comelec rules, to a hotel in Iligan City under the custody of Comelec lawyers Jubiel Surmieda and Renault “Boy” Macarambon, known in the commission as Garcillano protégés.
Ricky and Noel’s report put on the spot Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento, in charge of Mindanao, who after denying the transfer of custody, gave the line that he authorized it to protect the ER’s. Sarmiento also said he had to protect his people “through thick and thin.”
These indeed are dangerous times.

Marami pang patayan at dukutan ng mga tao habang nakaupo pa iyang baliw, paano ang kabuktutan niya ay pagtatakpan lamang ng higit pang mga kabuktutan. Three years more is a long wait. Walang word na pinaka masama ang hindi kayang tanggapin ni baliw dahil sa kapal niya. Ang taong masabihan ng pangit nahihiya pero si baliw magpapapungay pa ng mata. Ni hindi mahiya sa mga apo. Ang mababasa nilang history ay hindi maganda.

I sheepishly admit that in 2003, I was quick to brand the Oakwood incident as misguided military adventurism. To this day, I have not entirely lived down the fact that I was one of the millions who trooped to Edsa to provide warm bodies and helped install this woman into power.

Nagtaka kasi ako bakit hindi siya interesado at doon niya ako tinutulak sa NGO daw na iyon. I found out from a journalist friend that the organization she was recommending was her campaign fundraiser.
That was why when she led the protest and movement to remove Estrada, I joined the group that defended Estrada even when I actually did not like him, too, for his philandering (not plundering). I am not sorry I did because at least Estrada was voted by the people, the idiot was not. She just grabbed and stole the presidency “not just once but twice!”
But I guess it was a good lesson for everybody. In a way, medyo gumaang ang kasalanan ng uncle ko, who died saying, “History will be kinder to me!!!”

a warm embrace greets the loyal oppositionists, those like manny villar who play it safe and work within the institutional space provided by the current government system. why not? the current set up assists them in their quest for greater popularity, and eventually will boost their chances of making it to the top of the current system. their presence even affirms the credibility of the administration, because a semblance of democracy is provided them by no less than our very own favorites. these types of oppositionists are those who would keep the current system, rather than breaking them since it’ll also work for them eventually.
i think it is about time to tow the line between the play safes and those willing to go all in. we cannot have an urong sulong movement. we must decide once and for all which end we intend to reach.
now, to the disloyal opposititonists, dont be too trusting. the loyal oppositionists may not agree with ur methodologies, and may consider the current status of government more primordial than the personalities therein. thus, if u insist on going your way, you might end up fighting the wrong enemy. keep your eyes on the ball people.

i guess the comment made about being a disloyal oppositionist to a disloyal government was extremely valid. since this government cares not about the institutional integrity of our structures of govt, then we have every reason to work for its ouster. once a group of people blatantly and wrongfully violates the sacred pact it made with the rest of society (by cheating elections, stealing, abusing power, etc), being a disloyal oppositionist is the way to go.
now, granting we intend to destroy the wicked witch along pasig river, what alternative can we propose? i mean, precise detailed alternatives. an oppositionist can never win the debate unless it submits an effective counter proposal to replace the system it intends to destroy.
to the so called destabilizers, what is the counter proposal? what are the plans and scenarios in a post-wicked witch era? what do we do to rebuild the country? what are the threats, weaknesses, strenghts, and opportunities? who will help us? until we respond to these questions, we have not yet earned the right to destroy the system in place. doing so will only cause a meltdown and breakdown which will adversely harm the country instead of putting it forward.
now, the best thing to do is to plan the programs in a post wicked witch era, then we can all plot to oust this witch and burn her at stake. until the pre requisites for ousting is met, all we can do is pray.
unless destabilizing is the value in itself, then let it be.

The fact is a long time ago I thought on the same lines as you, but sure enough the more I viewed the situation the more I realised that this administration was screwing me with my pants on, with a smile on their faces.
I realised that it just wasn’t me, they were conning everyone in the country. I visited this blog by chance and for many months observed the comments and quickly realised the commentors were right and this lousy administration were completely conning me and the people at large.
I started to blog here to support people who were making a last stand against all odds to band together to seek Truth & Justice. I witnessed first hand, many visitors to the blog making their adverse comments about the opposition but I noticed that they couldn’t stand the heat of the EllensVille kitchen through having no real opinion of their own, what I used to call ‘cut & paste comments’.
