Lozada banned in public schools?

We are still trying to get a copy of the reported directive of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus banning Rodolfo Noel Lozada, former president of Philippine Forest Corporation and star witness in the NBN/ZTE deal scandal and former Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos, one of the principal personalities involved in the deal from attending fora in public schools.

We, however, are getting reactions. One came from Sen. Francis Pangilinan:

With news of DepEd’s instruction to ‘insulate’ students from politics in light of NBN ZTE witness Jun Lozada’s campus rounds to gather support, Senate Majority Leader and Independent senator Kiko Pangilinan today scored the “Worsening suppression of our freedoms.”

“DepEd’s use of its influence over school executives to not politicize the education sector is an irony because this move suggests a political motive. Our educational institutions have academic freedom that we must uphold, and DepEd should know when it is stepping on this line,” Kiko said.

The DepEd has asked officials from public and private elementary and secondary schools nationwide to protect students from politics.

“In the history of our country, the participation of students in political matters has been significant. As a former student activist, it is in this involvement in matters of national interest that opened my eyes in the realities of our society. We cannot deprive our students of this same learning! We must let them discover that lessons are learned not just inside the classroom,” Kiko asserted

  1. Bernard Chua even wrote a letter to Lapus:

    Dear Secretary Lapus,

    Peace be with you.

Your instruction to ban Mr Lozada from speaking in school campuses runs smack of suppressing the Truth.

The reason that Mr Lozada is going on campus tours, is in order for the youths to better understand the government, and how it functions and how it should function. The youths of today will be the future of the nation, depriving them of what is the state of their nation or how their government functions is denying them knowledge. You are
denying them the Truth! Let’s educate them on the fine art of corruption then, shall we?

It is no wonder the corrupt form of government we have is like a vicious cycle, because the youths were not made aware of this. The youths are made to believe that the type of government we have in the Philippines is unique and that the government must be corrupt in order to function.

Mr Lapus, you should know better.

FYI, Mr. Lozada has never asked to topple the government in his speeches! He only updates the students about the truth. On many occasions during his Question and Answer, he would beg forgiveness for not being able to answer their questions, not because he does not know the answer, but rather that other people are in better position to answer them. Example, questions about Romulo Neri, like, yesterday at Miriam, he was asked what will happen after Gloria steps down.

I would suggest that you include in the history books the corruption committted by past and present presidents, and what the consequences of this corruption would cost them and their future.

You are wrong to issue such an order, you are depriving the youths of knowledge that they could use in the future.

Each time you receive your salary and perks, think of the hardships the Filipinos are suffering. Away from home, Broken Families, Worlds Apart from Love Ones, and most of all, being away from your own country! I am working abroad, because the government did not provide me with alternatives!

Do we allow our youths to be ignorants? LetTruth prevail. Spread the word.

    Respectfully yours.

  2. Shame on Jesli Lapus. Just shows how the Midget is now getting jittery over being kicked out and stopped from her illegal activities, not at all to finish “the good things” that she claims she is doing for the country. I wonder how much Lapus is getting for his lip service now? ‘Kakahiya ka!

  3. chi chi

She forbids you to know the truth about her wrongdoings…let her feel the pangs of tigers in you!

  6. uncvlized uncvlized

“You shall not steal” thats the no.1 lesson na dapat ituro natin sa ating kabataan.

I am really disappointed with Sir Jesli… he is one of the most admired professors in AIM then and like Prof. Lopez and Dean Andy Ferreira, di ka aantukin pag siya ang facilitator at lecturer… nakakapanghinayang at nagpakain din siya kay GMA. But I think this would really erode his credibility among his peers. Shame on you, sir!

  8. chi chi

Just like Romy Neri, he started as a well respected professor at AIM.

  11. I doubt if Jesli can impose the said rule on UP students, who are traditionally non-conformists.

Hopefully, Mayor Lim will emulate the example of non-conformist Mayor Lacson of old who would defy any rule even by the presidents then. Hindi puedeng diktahan! Kaya as far as Manila schools are concerned, Lozada is still welcome I believe.

Frankly, I look forward to such kind of showdown!

Calling on alll parents to protect their children. Best thing they can do, samahan nila ang mga anak nila sa mga rally. Kung 50,000 iyong mga students na nagpunta sa rally, with the father and mother joining them, the crowd will swell to 150,000. OK na OK! Warm bodies welcome!

  13. OK now, sabay-sabay, sigaw tayong lahat— Jesli, Sipsip! Magkano ka?

  14. sandinista sandinista

Tama rin si Turning Point – the more you suppress the yearnings of the youth, the more that they would rebel. This is the same tactic that the Apartheid gov’t of white South Africa did in the black public schools. They even imposed the use of Afrikaans and in some cases, even banned the use of the local black dialects.

I’m sure this restriction will backfire on GMA.

  17. Desperate Moves.

They should not issue any directive they can’t implement.

What if the students demand the appearance of JLo? Who’s accountable for it, schools administrators?

Lalo lang dadami ang magagalit. Mapapabilis lang ang pagpatalsik.

At ito pa ang isang Matandang Gago. Kung anu-ano na naman ang pinagsasabi.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said the former bureaucrats may soon face charges of sedition if they come up with statements or measures seeking President Arroyo’s ouster. – Tribune

  18. Here’s another persistent rumor. The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) headed by Rey David, the First Gentleman’s alleged point man, reportedly advanced four years of its dividends to the government in the amount of around P4 to P6 billion. This mind-blowing sum owned by the sovereign Filipino people was purportedly pocketed by a big man and his gang. Rep. Danilo Suarez filed a bill allegedly to cover up this scandalous transaction. – Ronald Roy

So what if Lapus banned Lozada to go to public schools? The students I am sure will go to where ever Lozada will be..these students are concerned citizens..hindi gaya natin noon..na kung ano ang sabihin ng pari amen lang tayo..but then during those times hindi naman ganito ang gov’t. The private schools will open their doors to search for the truth..the more Lapus will banned them..the more they will be searching for their meaning..

  21. rose rose

Noong araw sa public schools..ito ang tinuturo..Cleanliness is next to Godliness; Honesty is the best policy..thus we read–Who cut the Cherry tree? Honest Abe..and our songs were” “I will be true for there are those who trust me..I will be pure for there are those who care..I will be humble for I know by weakness..” These I learned in Grade 1 at San Jose Antique, Elem School..Wala na bang kanito sa public school?
Corr: “the more Lapus will ban them..” sorry.

Lapus is just echoing the command of his master that’s why he issued his own executive order banning Lozada from visiting public schools. Lozada is on a mission to spread the “good news” and gloria wants him to be stopped. The action not only infringed on the constitutional rights to freedom of movement and speech but also as a way again to suppress the truth.

Talaga namang it was a spine tingling scene when the horde of students pushed away the steel gates and rushed inside the campus where Lozada was.

I learned Lozada was scheduled again to go to PUP. With that directive from Lapus and Neri, that would not push through anymore.

  34. masha masha

speaking of schools, ellen, nagsalita na ba ang head/presidente ng ateneo tungkol dito sa iskandalong ito? bro armin of la salle has been steadfast, refusing even a photo op with gloria. correct me if i’m wrong (and i would love to be corrected as i would love to be proud again to be an atenean) but as far as i know atenean response has been on an individual basis, that is, ateneo itself has yet to issue a statement on where it stands.

Dontcha worry, grizzy. Let’s see them implement that in UP. Ipapuputol ko leeg ng kapitbahay ko, in less than a week, pupunta si Lozada doon to test this order.

The economic picture, according to Gabriel Singson

    By Belinda Olivares-Cunanan
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    First Posted 23:25:00 03/05/2008

Close this As I was writing this column Wednesday, I found myself running to the TV to watch the incredibly tight race between Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in Texas, which she finally won. As a Hillary fan, I must confess that I felt a lump in my throat as I listened to her highly emotional victory speech in Ohio, after she won there by a big margin. She was so uncharacteristically charged and so were her ardent supporters, as her Ohio victory put this spunky candidate’s campaign back on track. Ohio broke the 11-state jinx for her in the past three weeks, and it took pure guts to keep slugging against Obama.

The underdog image of this first woman candidate for the White House helped arouse sympathy for her and fired anew her army of volunteers. But above all, it was Hillary’s indomitable fighting spirit, of not giving up despite three near-death experiences in the primary race that put her back in the campaign trail. In her Ohio speech, she displayed all these emotions, sounding truly genuine perhaps for the first time. By contrast, in San Antonio, Texas, the usually fiery Obama seemed quite wooden, with his supporters looking tepid.

Listening to Hillary’s fighting stance, I was reminded of how similar she and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are: smart and in command of facts, but coming across as very clinical and cold. But the fighting, emotional Hillary that came across last Tuesday night could have a lesson for Ms Arroyo. If Ms Arroyo could only put some fire in the belly in her efforts to fight her enemies, she might be able to stay the course.

    * * *

Doubtless many found a bit hilarious the one-week deadline, which began Wednesday, imposed by a bunch of former Cabinet officials from four administrations to Ms Arroyo, led by the so-called Hyatt 10 group of resigned Arroyo high officials. This group demanded that she take certain concrete steps dictated to resolve the ZTE national broadband network (NBN) crisis—or face the prospect of more and bigger rallies that they presumably would organize.

In the first place, all of these people are former officials and they command little following aside from their secretaries and drivers. Secondly, the Hyatt 10 were discredited by what was perceived as their treachery in 2005, first praising Ms Arroyo to high heavens, getting her to admit to talking to an official of the Commission on Elections and then suddenly demanding her resignation. This was one reason their call in 2005 didn’t catch on.

Moreover, by their own admission they won’t even recognize Vice President Noli de Castro as the rightful successor, in the event of Ms Arroyo’s resignation. Evidently these former officials remain deluded by a sense of self-importance that makes them think they can influence the course of events.

    * * *

Coincidentally on Wednesday, next to the full-page ad of these ex-Cabinet members was another ad signed by 74 House members, led by Speaker Prospero Nograles, 67 governors, 83 city mayors, 37 municipal mayors and eight “barangay” [village or neighborhood district] officials, all expressing support for Ms Arroyo.

Underscoring the “28 quarters of economic growth” under Ms Arroyo and terming the call for her resignation as “pointless, divisive and counter-productive,” these army of local officials exhorted the people to “Wait for the 2010 elections to effect change; Let due process take its course with regard to (the) allegations… Enough of dark politics! Let’s keep the momentum going.”

These leaders were elected into office, and one can truly say they have a very large part of the people with them. The local officials’ support reflects people’s sentiments: the elections are just around the corner; let’s work to have credible elections, not a people power uprising.

    * * *

On our 8 p.m. dzRH radio program last Sunday, Cecile Alvarez and I held a “paaralang bayan” [public schooling] with former central bank governor Gabriel Singson, who spoke glowingly about the economy. If it came from an Arroyo Cabinet member, such assertions would be met with cynicism, but Singson, a banker for 43 years, served as central bank chief under President Fidel V. Ramos and one year under President Joseph Estrada, and never under Ms Arroyo.

Singson said, “Hard facts and cold statistics cannot be finagled.” He compared data in 2001 with those of 2007 to show growth and a healthy financial position today. In 2001 our external debt was 68.3 percent of the gross national product (GNP), but today it’s only 36 percent. The debt shrank while GNP grew by 7.3 percent last year. Foreign debt service has been steadily declining: from 14.9 percent of our export and tourism receipts and overseas Filipino workers’ remittances in 2001, to 11.15 percent in 2006 and 9.45 percent in 2007.

An indication of our improved foreign debt situation is that we’re not utilizing as much official development assistance as before, and Philippine dollar-denominated bonds are now being traded abroad at big premiums. More savings are going into infrastructure spending around the country.

    * * *

Singson also noted that the budget deficit is now only nine percent, compared with 64 percent in earlier years. Unemployment stood at just 7.3 percent last year, helped in part by the fact that $5 billion to $6 billion is earned by business process outsourcing outfits, e.g., call centers, every year. As a result, per capita income in relation to GNP shot up to $913 last year from $725.7 in 2001.

The peso strengthened from 2001, when it was at 51.40 to the dollar, to 49.00 in January 2007 and 40.41 last week, an appreciation of 18.8 percent in one year. Singson said this was providential as it helped cushion the impact of skyrocketing oil prices; had the exchange rate remained flat, the price of gasoline would have shot up by P2.50 more per liter. It also proved helpful in our continuing heavy importation of rice and medicines.

Singson further noted that inflation was a benign 2.8 percent in 2007, and net international reserves were at an all-time high of $34.79 billion in January 2008, compared to $11.428 billion in 2001.

    Dear Ms. Mayuga,

I’ve just read your letter to Jun Lozada which glorifies (him) as a hero, an icon, a man who loves his country, etc. etc. I for one believe(d) so, until I saw this video. Please check this YouTube link about Joey and Jun.

From what I heard in the news, Jun and Joey admitted that the voices in this video are theirs. Jun said it confirmed his allegation that he was wiretapped. But, I think, that’s beside the point. Since he admitted that the said voice is his w/ PI profanities and all, I believe he has to explain to his adoring fans the content of this taped conversation.

Did he tell the whole truth about his participation in ZTE deal? Did he lie in the Senate when he said he had no connection w/ Joey? Was he promised a commission on the deal by Joey? Is that his way of moderating the greed by dealing on both sides, or (is he) the referee?

In my opinion, we should thank the wire-tapper for exposing the false heroes of our time. He is also a hero, isn’t he?

The hosts do not keep an objective stance and show outright disgust at anti-PGMA statements…helping to fan the flames of public resentment by monkeying with the answers given by witnesses – on air.”

What she says is different from what she does. Believe it or not pag pinaaudit ang mga economic data na yan, puro retoke pabor sa Evil Bitch! These data are all dressed up!It does not take an Einstein to figure out the padding here and there! These economic indicators are used to get more loans.

On the debt service, yan ay dahil sa malakas na peso. But the strong peso is due mainlu to the fact that almost all Asian countries have very strong currencies right now, hindi lang ang Pilipinas. It is also largely due to the tripled number of OFWS who have remmitted triple the amount compared to prior years.

    kaya go lapuz, go!

I hope UP President Romana will abide by the usual UP tradition. I remember UP President Cinco adamant on imposing UP rules regarding entry to the state university so much that he got in conflict with the father of the Midget that I was told was the reason why she went to Georgetown U. Para hindi mapahiya even when her entry to the US university was just as a salingpusa!!! But it is also a cold and hard fact that what is keeping us afloat are the foreign currency remittances from OFWs – contributing to our increased foreign reserves. Add to that the current depreciation of the US Dollar kaya nag-aapreciate Peso natin. Pero ang cold and hard fact din is the social cost of the increasing number of OFWs. Cold fact din that within our region, we are one of the lowest in terms of social human index at competitive index.

This is the same opinion about the Philippines that the former PM of Singapore Lee Kwan Yew wrote in his latest bio – that unless our government spends its budget on items that would increase our human index (health, education, housing, water, low utility rates, etc.) and improve our competitiveness (infrastructure and “governance”), kahit na mataas ang foreign reserves natin we are very vulnerable sa social and political upheavals.

Talking about the possibility of a civil war, I don’t think anyone of you here has the courage to die for what he believes in. You have had so many chances before to show your bravery.

Dati akala natin “spent force” na ang mga NPA, pero in the past few years, thanks to your “Ma’am” umangat ang myembro nila. Ever read the article of Time mag na cover pic pa ang isang amazona?

Sa mga universities ngayon, I have never seen such vigor sa biglang pagdami ng mga chapters ng LFS for the past few months.

Kaya jerz, thank you! VIVA!

The OFWs are our only hope now. If only their families can withstand a month without allotment, this will place our economy in disarray. It could increase the peso exchange rate back to 50 or more to a dollar. Two months without allotment, we cannot pay our foreign debts anymore. Just three months in a row that there’s no allotment, the government can no longer pay salaries. Four months without allotment, PGMA will be hanged upside down. Civil war will be at its apex. There might be already incursions of either the US expeditionary forces or the Chinese PLA to prevent chaos. Lets all pray this will happen.

Valdemar: The Philippines is very ripe for a civil war. Politicians are positioning themselves and the interest of outside forces are being jeopardized. I wouldn’t be surprised if these outside forces would fund some groups to start the ball rolling. It would be a pity to see disarray and chaos in the Philippines, however, most of the great nations today went through civil war, hence they value their blood-earned democracy. Something that has not occured in the Philippines. But democracy prevails, though I think Filipinos take this for ganted. They tend to become the audience, and wait for things / situation to die down. Most Filipinos would rather air their grievances about situations when it is already too late. This present crisis could be an opportunity for the Philippines to redeem herself from the political bankruptcy that she is at present. Civil war can still be avoided. How? Perhaps, when GMA has come to her sneses and step down, the Filipinos would take it upon themselves to be guardians of their freedom, by reigning in the politicians who most of time would think of themselves during their long tenure in office and think of the public only during election campaigns. One of the reasons Jun is doing the campus tours is to educate as much as he could on the ill-effects of the youths not taking action when it is required. From his campus tours and dialogues / fora with students, he encourages students to be more active, by finding their MINDSET which devlops their ATTITUDE, in turn would motivate them to take ACTION and get the RESULT they wish.
The Philippines at present in a state of “Organized Chaos”. This situation is well suited for our politicians.
This is the 1st time that I have engaged in fora like this, my interest developed only when Jun surfaced and imparted to us what he knows about the scandals the government has done and continues to do to. The Dysfunctional Procurement Procedure. I have always wondered how come the Philippines is lagging behind, when the Philippines should have been in the forefront of Economic achievement, not just because of the natural resources but also because of the Philippines’ massive talent in manpower. Eye opener if you could call it that. Peace to all! And hopefully changes would be achieved to improve the lives of the Filipinos. Opportunities for employment, not merely call centers. I have been to a lot of places and have observed how countries have developed, quite a long narrative, only if you guys would indulge. I am no Economist but have seen how some countries have progressed. Surely we could still do it! Cheers!

  102. kapatid kapatid

I have had the chance to talk to Jun in length about the state of the country. Very enlightening and educational for me. Never thought it was that bad! Akala ko, medyo pa lang.
I usually see him whenever I am in Manila, yes, even during these times, and I can guarantee that no money or promises were given to him as some may suspect. Also, I wish to impart to you all, Jun will not run for any public office, even way after this NBN/ZTE investigation. To give you an idea of the kind of person he is. Jun values friendship alot, remember how he would not say anything that would put Neri in a bad light, even if Romy has chsoen to be on the other side. Even today, he would not say anything bad about Romy. He helps alot of people. In his own samll way he extends help to whoever is in need, in whichever he can. Family is important to him as it is to everyone. He is very apologetic to the whole clan for putting everyone in danger. Believe me, everyone… As a closely knit family, everyone understood him and standing by his side, literally. Hindi yung “Jun nasa likod mo kami…” Its more like, Jun we are here side by side with you. A great person who has a passion for books and holds both Jose Rizal and Pope John Paul II high up there in a pedestal. His office and house has portraits of this Two. Just thought I’d share this with you. Thanks.

The next witness is a male. He’s Manalac, former official of PNOC. I’m surprised why his name is made public now with only two days to go before the hearing.

There are reports that Jun Lozada’s life is in danger. There are plans to assassinate him. We all know that no one can stop a determined assassin. If Lozada pushes through with his planned visits to the provinces for speaking engagement, his safety would be at high risk. It’s much easier to be killed in the provinces. I’m very concerned.
