Nandoon sina Bishop Yniquez at Makati Rep. Butz Aquino.

Di nagpapasindak at nasusuhulan.

  3. My interpretation of the prelates’ thanksgiving mass and prayer for the government could be likened to a mass for Gloria and as I said in a previous post, we should calibrate the so-called opposition to cha-cha rally and call it for what it was, a mass for Gloria and her minions.

The different religious blocs are confusing the faithful with their undecided stand, they either denounce Gloria’s shamelessness in breaching and continuing to breach the Constitution with the right words or they don’t but they really can’t make a half hearted stand.

That will be unfair on the people – hot, cold, hot, cold treatment. In these extremeley difficult and trying times where even the apathetic are being tested and tried for their patience, it will do the faithful no good at all NOT TO KNOW where they should stand, after all when all is said and done, most of our fellowmen still look up to the church for moral guidance.

The church should make a definite stand or stay away from the madding political crowd – they owe it to their congregations not to practice the exercise of Scottish showers…

  4. I can only echo Ellen’s call: DON’T RELY OR DEPEND ON THE CHURCH(es).

the church as an institution is also largely responsible for the maturing monster that is the gma administration. when all sense of decency and morality were being discarded, it chose to look the other way. it fails to understand that it too must show wrath to excorcise the demons it has itself created by its inaction.

if it cannot aid in the cause of redeeming our people, it must step aside and let the people vent its wrath!

we have two major institutions the “represent” our people. the government, which has rot in its core. the other is the church, and it has become a mush committee of fat friars that even reigns in the few remaining leaders within who have decided to stand fast and deliver one clear message: enough!

10 REASONS WHY FEW PEOPLE WENT TO THE PRAYER RALLY:

    1. Many were turned-off with the softening of the bishops. It is aside from the fact that few people really go to hear mass on Sunday nowadays.
    2. The result of a massive disinformation campaign by Malacanang’s phone & text brigades.
    3. The news that GMA may attend the prayer rally.
    4. The threat of the military that politicians and celebrities will be arrested if they will be on stage.
    5. The fear that the military and policemen mobilized by Malacanang will not hesitate to kill and maim any rallyist.
    6. The prohibition of any speeches touching on politics, displaying of streamers, placards and flags.
    7. The threat issued by Malacanang that terrorists or NPA may set off explosives in the crowd.
    8. The blockade imposed by the military from all entry points leading to Luneta.
    9. The chilling effect of the cold blooded murder of Abra Cong. Bersamin
    10. GMA early pronouncement that she’s backing off from pursuing cha-cha and con-ass halted the momentum.

Anna, I share yours and the thoughts expressed here by other bloggers for that kind of change that should or might have started with the religious. In a way, there’s some truth to what a guy named Marx had anticipated – “religion is the opiate of the people.”

But it can also work the other way around. It is astonishing that, twice in our history, the Philippines has proved to the world that religion matters in changing (although not completely) the political.

The problem that I see is, that the religious have also been somewhat affected by the divide-and-rule tactic. I would not condemn the institution they represent for that weakness. (I personally don’t like some bishops.) It’s part of the road that leads us to the doorsteps of Malacanan. Sadly, the latter’s evil scheming has gone to all directions and respected no one but itself. Sad still, some bishops are human enough – unable to resist temptation.

Let’s not lose hope. One day, the spirit of Cardinal Sin may wake people up again. I just pray that it will not come late enough, when there is nothing more to hope for.

  8. npongco npongco

Mike hit the bull’s eye when he said even though he disliked Cardinal Sin, the country needs someone like Sin. I share his sentiment. And I’ve made that position in this blog earlier. Where’s his most loyal helper and adviser Soc Villegas? Why is Cardinal Vidal so soft now on Gloria? While we salute bishops like Tobias and Cruz, majority of the bishops are behaving like politicians. Envelopes? Oh yes, plenty of those and they keep coming.

  9. mike_dlc mike_dlc

I remebered Bishop Bacani said about Marcos after the latters downfall from office. “Si Marcos ay walang b*yag dahil tumakas sya…” not sure about his exact word.

Hmmmm…. I wonder if the organizers (bishops) of the Sunday rally has one?

  10. Anna, Ellen:

It’s time that Filipinos should stop relying on the church, which should be reminded of its religious responsibility instead and the separation church and state for it to stop its usual abuses. In fact, the CBCP should make the Great Switik be responsible for the deaths of 800 victims of military reprisals on her order, wiles and whims. She should be excommunicated in fact for what she has done for example in the last election, and for her blasphemous statements.

God willing her games will soon be over. There were less warm bodies in the Luneta rally because they did not to pray with the priests who would give thanks for the Great Switik because there was nothing to thank for. If the priests said that it would be a rally to denounce the Great Switik, the crowd would definitely be bigger with or without the threats from Malacanang.

You’re right, Ellen, evil will never triumph over good! PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

  11. npongco npongco

Herewith is a portion of Ernie Maceda’s recent column. As I mentioned much earlier and my view is shared by many, some negotiation and deals could have taken place before the Sunday rally. Since CBCP could no longer back out from the much publicized rally, they tone down the call to “Thanksgiving”. What a BS !

“GMA and her allies did everything to stop the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)/El Shaddai prayer-rally at the Luneta Park last Sunday afternoon.

After National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales and AFP Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon Jr. warned of violence by communist infiltrators to disrupt the rally, and PNP chief Oscar Calderon threatening to arrest politicians and movie stars attending the rally, Malacañang scrambled with no less than GMA and her close aides visiting Bro. Mike Velarde and friendly bishops to stop or downplay their participation.”

  12. npongco npongco

Mike, Marcos did not escape. He was kidnapped by the US. He was deceived into believing that he would be taken to Ilocos but ended up in Hawaii. While in Hawaii despite gravely ill, he manifested his desire to return to the country to answer all the charges. However, Cory and her government refused. Gloria tried to do the same trick to Erap by pressuring and convincing him to leave the country after Edsa 2. But, Erap refused to leave. So, unable to pin down Erap with lesser crimes, Gloria and his legal goons came up with “plunder” so he could be indefinitely detained.

we should not be relying on some leaders on the church.they are not God to give us miracle, they are ordinary people like GMA,they can be devil or an angel defending on their conscience..they will be also for their own interest..but there are only few that their concern is for the country and the people!!cardinal rosales and some leaders are blind, deaf and mum when it comes to all the sins and crimes of GMA..since the beginning of this evil admintration of GMA,cardinal rosales and some religious leaders minus villanueva of jil have not said any strong messages on crimes of GMA..they blamed the military on the killings, members of GMA`s cabinet and her military laeaders but not GMA!!like the con ass, where jdv and his bums where all attack left and right up and down almost everyday, but only few connects GMA on all the crimes of jdv and his bums..what are this leaders of the church afraid of from GMA?i think others guess and my guess is the same..the donations and funds that GMA distributes to them is more important than the peoples grievances!!this church leaders are the padre damaso of today!!

here’s that news on Makati rally
    from the DT:

Thousands call for Gloria ouster in Makati rally

    12/19/2006

Religious leaders and militant and urban poor groups yesterday massed up in Makati City’s financial district demanding President Arroyo’s ouster over her alleged involvement in graft and corruption and extra-judicial killings in the country.

The protesters also condemned the House leadership in its attempt to amend the Constitution.

Makati City Rep. Agapito Aquino said the rally was an offshoot of the people’s outrage against the failed bid of the House of Representatives to change the Constitution through the Constituent Assembly (Con-ass).

“The administration may have sagged a bit on the Con-ass issue but apparently did not completely bury it. That’s why this demonstration is conducted to make sure that the issue is buried for good,” he added.

Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr., Bishops Antonio Tobias of Quezon City and Deogracias

Iñiguez of Caloocan City supported the call to overthrow the Arroyo administration during the protest attended by an estimated 5,000 rallyists at the Ayala and Paseo de Roxas Avenues.

Iñiguez said the mass action served as a rallying point to consolidate the issues that are still hounding the Arroyo presidency, which could lead to an even massive street action in the days to come.

“We just want to bring together the opposition groups, to unite them for the purpose of achieving our goals,” the bishop added.

Iñiguez stressed yesterday’s rally served as the avenue for the poor to express their outrage and anger against the government, which could lead to Mrs. Arroyo’s ouster.

While the President already gave up on changing the Constitution through Con-ass, the prelate noted that there are still other unresolved issues such as the “Hello Garci” tapes and the fertilizer scandals, the extra-judicial killings and the corruption in government, that remain to be settled.

The Hello Garci audio recording is a political scandal and electoral crisis that involved Mrs. Arroyo, who allegedly rigged the 2004 national elections in her favor while the fertilizer scam involves the President’s alleged bagman, former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn “Joc-joc” Bolante, who has been accused of illegally disbursing some P728 million in fertilizer funds, also during the elections.

The amount was purportedly used to ensure the victory of Arroyo. Another P1.4 billion in disbursements remain to be audited.

Among the groups that attended the rally were the Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya, Akbayan, People’s Movement Against Poverty, Movement for Truth and Justice, Movement for National Democracy and Kilusang Mayo Uno.

According to them, the protest was in response to a call by Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo to “watch and pray” against attempts to amend the Charter.

    SA BULOK NA UTAK:

“It was successful in the sense that the rally was peaceful and prayerful. That was our concern,” Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, spokesman for the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said.

“The number is not important to us, what is important is the message. We knew that will happen but it’s not something that we put some substance to because if we really want to, we can still reach that number by calling the parishes and organizations. But we didn’t do it,” he stressed.

“Value transformation is at the root of the public’s clamor for change and the national leadership has always recognized this vital aspect of nation-building,” he said.

    value transformation? nation-building?
galing sa bibg ng criminal? mabuti pa
ang mga mental retardates may pang unawa.

While the Church welcomed Mrs. Arroyo’s statement, Quitorio said they are hoping the President would put to action her promises.
    WHAT PROMISES?

  17. This should read: God willing her games will soon be over. There were less warm bodies in the Luneta rally because they did not WANT to pray with the priests, WHO DID NOT PROBABLY WANT TO LOSE THE SPECIAL PRIVILEGE THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN RE PCSO FUNDS THAT THE GREAT SWITIK COULD ORDER STOPPED.

If the priests said that it would be a rally to denounce the Great Switik, the crowd would definitely be bigger with or without the threats from Malacanang, WITH OR WITHOUT US HELP.

Funny, Anna, how the Filipinos have been conditioned to credit even their own accomplishments to the Americans, who were actually not that benevolent judging from the interviews that we have made with those surviving members of the Sakdalistas prior to WWII, the same group of Filipinos who supported the movement for a free Philippines in the 20’s and 30’s, and reason for the song “Bayan Ko” that was composed in the 30’s and made a symbol of the Aquino movement in the 80’s.

At least, over in Japan, we do not lick the asses of Americans the way Filipinos have been brainwashed to do as they treat the Americans as their saviors and their demi-gods! No, I am not being anti-American. I’m simply staying a fact.

The church is already going out on a limb as it is, considering the theory of separation of church and state. I think Ellen means that we should not rely TOTALLY on the church. It is still the responsibility of We, the People, to bring the hammer down on the pretender by the murky river.

If the above quotes are accurate, taken to the extreme, ang tanong ko ay: “bakit nag-rally pa?”

As per Msgr. Quitorio statement.

  26. Hi Good Morning! you see I did wake up this morning, god is good (Laffin).
As for me I’ve been reading many comments about Luneta last Sunday but found it difficult to agree totally with the writer mainly on the views given of the church participation. Todays Editorial “Empty Intelligence’ in the Daily Tribune by Ninez Olivares says it all for me. I think its because maybe she has the professional ability to write about the participation of the church without appearing to be swayed by religious feelings that she may or may not have.

The church don’t practice what they preach.just a few months ago the catholic church went to an undisclosed amount of settlement to those sexually abused victims of a flesh thirsty clergymen.Where do the church got the money?

  30. npongco npongco

Cocoy, it’s no longer news…about the priests’ sex crimes. In the US alone, millions of dollars were spent in settling cases committed by Catholic priests. And these abuses and crimes have never widely exposed in the past. Today’s media helps exposed their crimes. Centuries ago, those who were critical of these priests were arrested, jailed and killed. I think most members here are wide readers and quite knowledgeable about church history. Of course some would still be offended by such accusation even if true.

After all has been said about the priests, let us all also acknowledge the “other” priests who I believe must have also felt disgusted with the turn-out of the rally. Some of these priest are Oscar Cruz, Tobias, Iniquez, Dizon, et al. The names I mentioned are at the forefront in lambasting GMA during the controversial “Hello Garci” scandal, some of them even joined rallies and were hosed down by GMA’s police.

Unfortunately, their situation is very much like the minority congressmen in the House Of Representative. They were outnumbered by the majority in the “House Of God”.

  33. guy_and_mind guy_and_mind

I cant understand this CBCP. On JULY 2005 Pastoral statement, they urge the people to discern, search for truth according to the gospel with regards to the issue of Hello garci “In a spirit of humility and truth, we declare our prayerfully discerned collective decision that we do not demand her resignation. Yet neither do we encourage her simply to dismiss such a call from others.”
..the impeachment was trashed and the truth was never heard…..On January 2006, they said to continue searching for truth, “We recommend that the search for truth be relentlessly pursued through structures and processes mandated by law and our Constitution,” they said adding that such probe should be led by “credible people, persons of integrity and probity….Lately this July 2006 they issued a pastoral statement saying that impeachment process is not the rigth process which cound find the truth..they said “Unless the process and its rules as well as the mindsets of all participating parties, pro and con, are guided by other than genuine concern for the common good, impeachment will once again serve as an unproductive political exercise, dismaying every citizen, and deepening the citizen’s negative perception of politicians? left, right and center,” then this month they have this strongly worded statement with regards to Con-ass “fraudulently illegitimate and scandalously immoral” and “perceivably self-serving.”…yung hindi ko maintindihan dito eh kung saan ba talaga ang CBCP.. isa lang ang dapat na maging issue dito… Supportado ba nila sa GMA or hindi. Based sa mga statement nila sila yung nagpapalabo ng sitwasyon.. majority ng mga pinoy ayaw kay GMA, alam yung mga kasalanan nya at gusto ng matanggal sa puwesto… pero i doubt kung nagbubulag bulagan lang ang mga obispo like cardinal rosales, vidal, arguelles,.. pero hindi ko pa narinig na nanawagan ang CBCP na bumaba si gloria… or baga kasabwat din sila (except to others) sa tingin ko yung mga statement ng CBCP abstract lahat ay pabor kay GMA, they just confuse the people, they just cool off the people, drawing lang walang direction dahil puro salita lang, sila ang sumalba kay GMA nung July 2005 na sana malapit ng bumagsak kung that time they sided with the people. at ngayong december sila rin ang nagsalba kay GMA, instead protest rally ang gaganapin sa luneta eh naging thanksgiving rally… sumali pa kasi yan si rosales alam naman ng lahat ng pro-GMA yan, takot kay GMA yan, iwan ko lang, wala akong dapat ipagpasalamat sa kanila except to those who strongly and publicly denouce gloria ..(kilala na natin sila)…I realized that the church is one of the major obstable for us to getaway from this political crisis coz our church leaders are the one dont have a strong stand towards the right direction..

How I wished there was a speaker the likes of RC in that rally. Renato Constantino, all by his lonesome in that press conference, delivered his message loud and clear in elegant language right into the faces of De Venecia and his Con Men. The message didn’t take more than a minute, but it reverberated througout the land. Now that’s quality by a quantity of one!

But anyway, got to be grateful for little blessings. The Church tried to do battle their way, with one hand tied behind their backs. The public prefers doing it with two.

…Phil, I also think the church’s one hand is tied being her back; but the other hand reaches out with open palm (for envelope?). And the reason why the public prefers the church’s two hands being tied at the back is to prevent the church from reaching out the two open hands. Get it?

The masses could best be mobilized when they see a clear and dangerous confrontation on the streets between Malacanang and the progressives. By then the religious groups could ride on the hysteria and egg the masses (and even the military) to risk their lives. Hmmm. Let’s first focus on the results rather than on the process.

We happen to have a passive Catholic church leader. Let us give him the credit for even officiating the mass in Luneta. It must be awfully frustrating for the other bishops who want to have reforms. The people then have to rely less on the church. But what would happen now when we have a very weak military( led by tiyanak’s goons), a very weak religious group, a very strong immoral president and a headless opposition? Kawawa talaga tayo! We have to put all our heads together and come up with a solution. The only hope we may have is the upcoming May 2007 elections. But recently, I read in a Newsbreak article that most of the comelec biggies were appointed by the tiyanak. A re-make of the “hello Garci” may be in the offing again. Our Supreme Court is also predominatly Glue’s appointees. So we are doomed! Glue even wants to help the church change our character!!!It will be a disaster!!!!Worse than the state we are in now.

The only hope we have is a God given solution. I wonder what Glue did in Hongkong for a week? The best liver doctor in Asia comes from there! I am also wondering about the frequent St Luke’s visits. You get the point. Maybe this will be the ultimate answer to everyone’s prayer!

  47. From Nathaniel Contreras:
    Nathaniel Contreras to me
show details 3:28 pm (7 minutes ago)

    Hello Ate Ellen,

Nabasa ko ulit yung blog mo sa google about the Prayer rally last Sunday.
I am sad to read that many of those who contributed ideas about what happened do not
    know what is going on.
The Bishops are Bishops. They are not the Catholic Church. If through the moral teachings
of the Church will be considered, in the entire history of the Catholic Church, she through
the Pope even declared war against those who are against the truth. There were a lot who
are against justice which the Church always upholds. Taking back the Holy Land from the
Muslims is an endeavor that many died. One even had a vision and founded a congregation.
If the visible church could only speak, she will shout and would even tell us to dethrone
an illigitimate authority who stole the presidency not only once but twice.
Unfortunately, we do have a lot of bishops and clergy who have no principles at all.
I am hurt everytime people would throw accusations against the church. They should
throw their accusations to the heirarchy not to the church. The heirarchy is not the church.
A bishop is not the Catholic church.
If Gloria is an infidel, I do think, with the help of the Holy Ghost, through the Pope, the church will declare a war against the infidels. She is mocking a very respectable position
from which God has given His blessing. But since she is illigitimate, she has to be thrown
out from the throne of the representative of God.
Kindly tell the readers of the blog to please stop making their accusations against the
church. The church didnt do anythng wrong. But the heirarchy is doing a lot of mess
that is why the church is in crisis and that is really wrong.
prinsipyong pinaninindigan. Sabi nga ni Fr. Manuel Piñon, they no longer have what we
call theology. What they have at present is tae-ology.
gobyerno. We all know that prayer works a lot, but only if we are sincere.
Piñon, its not Theology anymore,
its tae-ology.

  48. tayerevo tayerevo

the softening of the bishops’ stand can be attributed to the fact that they are actually part of the ruling triumvirate which had oppressed our people for so long.

do not expect them to be advocates of change in status quo. the church hierarchy will always be advocates of ultraconservatism. they do not want to yield their power, their previlege or their wealth.

in this orwellian world of ours, the inner ruling circle will protect their turf at all cost and the masses be damned.

the bishops are part of this inner circle; the others are the tusong politiko and the economic pacmans.

  49. Mr Contreras is absolutely spot on!

These bishops are NOT THE CHURCH! They represent the Church. To me, in reality the CHURCH is Jesus Christ and the entire congregation of the faithful that includes the clergy.

That’s why most often when I refer to the various religious blocs, including the Roman Catholic Church, I simply write in small letters wheneve I remember, church(es).

I am a Roman Catholic and am proud to be one but my being a Roman Catholic does not prevent me from castigating another R Catholic when I feel or believe that said R Catholic has stepped out of line (said R Catholic could do the same to me if he/she feels I’ve stepped out of line too).

I am a Filipino and proud to be one too but my being a Filipino doesn’t take away my moral right to be ashamed of compatriot, purporting to be a leader of the Filipino nation who is a known thief, an inveterate liar and a brazen cheat going by the name of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

In that context, I believe we should toe the line and be reminded of what Mr Contreras said, the Filipino bishops are NOT the Roman Catholic Church.

  50. Mrivera Mrivera

  51. A watered-down, “slap on the wrist” “thanksgiving” message from the CBCP to Arroyo and her cohorts will never be taken seriously by either this corrupt illegitimate administration or the anti-Arroyo groups.

Want to call another anti-Arroyo rally, CBCP? Only if you mean it.

  52. Yikes!

Wala!

Bound and gagged sila by Confesionnal secrecy, so no dice.

  54. Anna:

Hindi nabola, natakot! I bet you that the Great Switik must have threatened to stop the PCSO to the CBCP if the priests there would not heed her call. Ganoon katindi!

KAWAWANG BANSA! PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA! SIPAIN NA ANG MGA BUGOK!

  55. Kaya tama si Ellen, don’t depend much on the clergy to fight the fight of the nation! When it comes to the crunch and I don’t want to belittle their efforts, the members of the clergy can only fight this government on a limited basis – they cannot go on the physical onslaught and rightly so.

I never did depend on the clergy to fight all the way through, not even when His Political Turbulence, Cardinal Sin (may his soul rest in peace) was the no. 1 member of the Roman Catholic clergy in Pinas.

  56. Can’t blame the clergy either – they have a moral calling steeped in the peace dogma. But on the moral aspect of the fight, they can go the whole hog or stay away and should lead the battle from the power of the pulpit.

Oh well, bottom line is it’s never easy and as Chabeli said, good doesn’t always come easy!

  57. Yuko,

I don’t know kung NATAKOT sila, can’t say I believe na natakot sila.

I think, the real thing ay na-switik sila ni Gloria (borrowing your expression), heheheh!

where the church’s interest is threatened by national and/or political issues, their main line of engagement will always be pacifying the collective indignation of a long oppressed and suffering people.

hindi lang actually si gloria labandera and nanginginig ang tumbong ngayon, pati ang institutional church ay nanginginig na rin because they know that close to 400 years of Catholicism in this country has not brought us anywhere near the kingdom of heaven. like most latin american countries colonized by the spaniards through the praile, the social and economic divide is largely the creation of an oppressive religious culture which says ok lang maging mahirap dito sa mundo kasi meron namang langit na naghihintay sa dako pa roon pag na dedbol ka na. yan din ang dahilan kung bakit ok lang sa kanila lumubo ang populasyon at marami pa ang maghihirap.

  63. npongco npongco

I partly agree with what this Nathaniel Contreras wrote. Yes, the bishop or bishops is not the Catholic Church. That’s the usual excuse. But the Bible is clear in its teaching; that is, they must practice what they preach. This brings us now to the question if indeed the church (Catholic Church) is a true church of God. For to identify if a church is true and of God, we must see what kind of leaders and preachers that church have. A blind cannot guide another blind. A liar cannot accuse another one of lying. Nelbar was so patient for his research and compilation of Catholic Church’s announcements over the years as posted above. Indeed, the church’s decisions and actions have been one of inconsistency and contradictions for decades or centuries. They are even reflected in the doctrines they teach. The church claims and believes in the Pope’s infallibility. But, history tells us the many errors and mistakes committed by these Popes. Sometimes, I would like to believe one INC teaching that struck me: The Church and Christ are inseperable. The Pope and the Bishops who represent Christ are supposed to be united with His Body, the Church. So, how can we reason out by stating that the Bishop is not the Catholic Church?

  64. Bishops are human beings like anybody else!

The religious blocs that hold some kind of moral sway over Philippine politics are being led by men.

The INC leadership and their members are no exception. They are men and women who are capable of sinning much like any human being.

  65. The Catholic Church per se groups under it the Anglicans and the Roman Catholics as well.

  66. npongco npongco

I expected the kind of excuse given by Anna above. That, the bishops are human beings. If we always use the same excuse in defending these God’s servants’ wrong doings, where do we go? We just have too many apologists, I mean Catholic apologists. I used to be one. But later, when I discovered that I was defending these people who never change their ways, my perception changed. The Pope is the successor of Peter. The priests who wear Christ’s clothing represent Christ in their day to day spiritual duties. We expect them to be above mere human beings. Assuming that we accept their being humans and humans commit mistakes (Jesus was the only One Who has not sinned), are we also to accept the mistakes they repeatedly commit? God is clear in His warning to all: One must repent with a sincere heart. God forgives those who repent for their sins (mistakes); but if they keep on committing the same mistakes, God’s anger will be upon them.

    http://www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=722

If Senate president Manuel Villar or Sen. Ping Lacson or actor Rez Cortez go on stage during a rally for peace on Sunday, they will be arrested. That’s according to the strange order of Reynaldo Varilla, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office of the Philippine National Police.

For what crime, only Varilla knows.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted Varilla as having said,”There will be no political speeches and no movie personalities onstage. The organizers will run the show. If they (movie stars and politicos) will insist and thigs get messy, we will do our thing and arrest them a per request of the organizers.

Why Varilla is setting the guidelines for a rally being organized by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and other religious groups is something that could only happen when one is a state of panic.

Rep. Roilo Golez is also puzzled.”What’s the crime?,” he asked. “Illegal grandstanding?”

  69. Look here, npongco, what I said was not an APOLOGY, heck not at all! You are getting confused!

It’s a statement of fact, nothing more nothing less. My posts on the matter of the clergy speak for themselves.

And if you say, “but if they keep on committing the same mistakes, God’s anger will be upon them.” So? Let God’s anger, as you say, fall where it will fall. That’s God’s prerogative not yours and ain’t mine either.

If that’s gonna make you happy, fine, call the wrath of heaven, it’s your call!

As I’ve said in a previous post, wanna let these bishops know how strongly you feel against them? write to them.

  70. Chabeli Chabeli

Good governance IS a moral issue. The CBCP, in my view, can only give moral advice, or even try to persuade its flock. If anyone expected the CBCP to lead its people to take up arms, or to exaggerate, to tell its flock to go and KILL Gloria, that will not happen ! Religion, as I understand it to be, is the moral fiber of any unit. The CBCP, to the best of its ability, did its part, whether good or bad in the eyes of many. Those who were present at the Luneta rally did his/her part, and those who continue to fight for the ousting of Gloria are doing their part. The CBCP Prayer Rally is only part of history that is unfolding. This part (CBCP rally) will only make sense when we see the big picture-and, by God’s grace, we will see that when the story of Gloria ends. For now, what we are witnessing is only a part of the whole picture.

Indeed, I agree with Anna de Brux that if anyone feels strongly against the bishops, they should “…write to them.”

  71. Chabeli Chabeli

If any of the Bishops or priests shouted anti-Gloria sentiments in the Prayer rally, they would be harshly criticised for being too political or the issue of the separation between Church versus State; or worse, they would have been charged with inciting to sedition or rebellion. Since I was at the rally, I interpreted it to be that we pray for the country and ask God to guide us; pray for discernment. The reason also behind the low turn out is because of blogs where we can air our anger and frustrations, instead of going to the streets.

  72. Email from Henry:

Hmmm, the debate becomes heated and more engaging. Wondering why this topic on the bishops should divide those who want Gloria out. From my own little corner, one thing doesn’t happen yet – the bishops (or however you call the pious among us) have clearly stopped short of their call for meaningful change at this time. What’s needed now is not just theology, but LIBERATION THEOLOGY. This, to me, is what Arch. Cruz, Tobias and a few others want to tell us. Unfortunately, many others seem stuck in the old catholic shell that’s insulated from current reality and is no longer relevant in these trying times.

Anna, one person writing the bishop is like a drop that doesn’t even make a sound. Your suggestion is better put to a greater effect if more people will write them, not individually but collectively. That brings me closer to home.

Ellen, why don’t you furnish Cardinal Rosales and the other bishops a raw (unedited) copy of how your bloggers feel about it? As leaders of their flock, they are also entitled to what people think. A variety of opinions is always better than one, lonely voice.

Looks like the prelates have just withdrawn from where the action is. That, to many, only shows a less calculating and less rational stance, as the prelates insist on universal moralism that may not work under the circumstance. From an angle, that action is a surrender to rational institutions like the state and its apparatuses (judiciary, legislative, executive) made almost completely irrational by the evil motives of those in power. By withholding their punch when it should have been delivered to knock out evil once and for all, they only expose themselves and consign their flock to the abyss, allowing further degradation of society to continue. By holding on to that “ambivalent” or mere prayerful stance, as they did in last Sunday’s prayer rally, the bishops have also been perceived as making the church irrelevant or less useful as an institution of change. True, ultimate salvation is the most important. But we should not forget this material world, where we live in borrowed time. We have to make the most of it following God’s commandments.

Am still hopeful that one day, they will finally decide. I still see the church, or religion, playing a decisive role like it did in EDSA.

In a real crisis that we are in now, one can’t be at the middle. Either you speak up and be counted, or you join the evil ones. Not siding is like allowing evil to ravage the helpless.

Am afraid that the way things go, the status quo will live on as depraved leaders continue corrupting us. Tomorrow, we may wake up without a nation we have endeared and cherished to preserve

  74. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

Lest we forget, God’s commandments are: “Thou shalt not steal, lie……”

Gloria has repeatedly stolen, lied, and doesn’t know when to stop. (She stole the people’s votes, our liberties, and now wants to do it again. She lied many times over, like I won’t run as president, I withdraw cha-cha, I have the nation’s interest over other things, blah blah…)

What’s new? Gloria is a congenital liar.

  77. Atsee,

Same ol, same ol!

    Heheh!

    Anna,

I had a nightmare after Yuko imitated the midget’s sickening voice and manner of speaking over the phone, kuhang-kuha! heheh!

  81. Hawaiianguy:
This DEVIL’s devilish plan is always to simply devide and rule, even the Bishops she devided.
The maiority of the Bishops are listening to and being manipulated by this DEVIL’s lies. This DEVIL woman tells them there is no need for them to lead a people’s rally, because the DEVIL is no longer insisting on the ConCon in fact she, the DEVIL, gives them her guidelines to follow.
Then these gullible Bishops (majority) in fact ALL the Bishops suffer the embarrassment of this DEVIL’s 180 degree turn. The DEVIL woman is against the few (minority) Bishops such as Cruz, Tobias etc. simply because they recognise her as the evil DEVIL itself. But this DEVIL woman has succeeded in keeping the Bishops devided.
The majority of these Bishops are until now silenced, not even prepared to rebuke this evil immoral DEVIL woman. They should collectively apologise to the people for their lack of leadership in facing this immoral woman devil. Then they should denounce this DEVIL woman by ‘NAME’, standd shoulder to shoulder as a majority of Bishops should face the evils of any DEVIL.
Its time for the Bishops to unite themselves and follow the examples of the minority of Bishops. No lunches at the Palace with this DEVIL woman, denounce her in name. Likewise the INC should stop meeting this DEVIL woman in secret meetings and be open and transparent about your thoughts, also denouce this DEVIL woman by name. The filipino people dare all of you to stop thinking of just yourselves. Enough is Enough.

  82. Folks sorry about the spelling of DIVIDE..I’m so angry! we are being conned left right & center

  83. I got to go, my business is suffering, I’m in the dog house and as I’ve told you before my pet dog gets a regular kick in the ass, that’s whats happening to me now (Laffin) See You on the ice.

  84. Chi, Anna, we are mean, aren’t we?

    Anyway, Merry Christmas,everybody!

  85. “If any of the Bishops or priests shouted anti-Gloria sentiments in the Prayer rally, they would be harshly criticised for being too political or the issue of the separation between Church versus State.”

they had no problems being political back in edsa dos.

anyway, the admin has regained the momentum again i think, until their next overreach.

  86. Chi,

Can you send me an email? Sorry, but I’m using my sister’s provider and it does not allow sending out message from this end although I am free to download mails from my inbox. Thanks. Malapit na ang Pasko! Ilang araw na lang! Lungkot ng Pasko sa Bay Area.

Today, I went shopping with my mother at K-Mart, Macy’s, etc. Golly, walang masyadong namimili! Naghihirap ang mga kano!

    PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

  87. Chi,

At our street demonstration in Tokyo last February against the Great Switik, Congenital Liar and Great Mandarambong, I delivered a speech parodied from one of hers and I put a big black bubble gum on my cheek, tawanan!

  88. Chi, Yuko,

Talaga, kaya mong mimi iyang accent ni Gloria bastos?

    Wow! That is so great!

Right Ellen, we can be really mean and even meaner to the meanest people like Gloria and her kampons.

  91. From Ronaldo Estrada:

He he he.
