A true Filipino

Our column last February 28 on the advocacy of detained Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon has elicited an inspiring letter from someone who declined to give his name.

Although the letter writer said that his letter is a personal message to me, I’d like to share it with you all.

I am in my seventies, with 6 children, all UP graduates. A statue of the Oblation occupies a prominent place in my office. I am writing to let you know that for me, and perhaps for many others like me, what you in media are doing, putting in print for our information the heroic acts and the idealism of these young men, in these times, is itself Heroism.

You, and those presently facing court martial and criminal proceedings in the Makati Regional Trial Court, provide proof in Rizal’s faith on the Youth, as the hope of the fatherland. We are grateful.

In connection with the advocacy of Captain Faeldon on national consciousness, I would like to state that I was 8 years old and a public school pupil at the outbreak of the Second Wold War. During flag ceremonies then at the school ground, we had to recite, hand over heart, eyes focused at the Philippine flag waving in the breeze, the following oath:

I love the Philippines
It is the land of my birth
It is the home of my people
It protects me and helps me
To be strong, happy and useful.

In return,
I will heed the counsel of my parents
I will obey the rules of my school
I will perform my duties
Unselfishly and faithfully.
I will be A True Filipino
In thought, in words, in deed
.

Through the years, perhaps instinctively, it goes over and over in my head. What about the present generation, is Love of Country being drilled into the consciousness of children? Or are their eyes trained on some other lands, as OCWs? As immigrants?

Are our children now being encouraged to love things Filipino? When we were young, we were made aware of the NEPA (National Economic Protectionism) policy. Can we drum up some more on the “Buy Pilipino” movement? It should make us wince in pain every time we see factories, and small shops and stores closing down. Even our favorite brand of toothpaste and toilet soap are manufactured in Indonesia. Why not patronize our footwear and garments, and products made in the Philippines, which are even of better quality?

I am not a functionary of this current government or part of any of its agenda. I am one of the faceless public still hoping for the best of this country. I truly believe that there is no other sky as blue as the Philippine sky, and none as beautiful as the Philippine sunrise and sunset.

For me, this is the only land that I can call my own, and I would want no less than see its rightful place again as the Pearl of the Orient. More power to you.

Isn’t it heartwarming?

* * *

I’d like to mention once again the essay –writing contest that Capt. Faeldon has launched.

Capt. Faeldon is admirable because rather than be broken by his detention (he was in solitary confinement for six months) his political consciousness and sense of patriotism sharpened.

In his website (www.pilipino.org.ph), Faeldon explained why he launched the literary contest:

Now, as we teeter on the brink of change, we need to define more than ever what we are as a people, and what we want from the future.

Is the future we hope for nothing more than a job at a call center? What should we pray for, when we pray? What kind of life do we wish for our children? What are our dreams for ourselves, for our nation? What are our dreams, as a people?

We are the PILIPINO. We believe that the hope for the future lies within the youth, and the common tao. It lies in the simple dreams we share, in the joys that we cherish, in the values we hold dear.

But these are vague. We dream of a better life, but how do we achieve this in today’s hard, competitive world? How do we keep intact the family that we cherish, while we struggle to survive? How can we hold on to respect and integrity, when lies flourish and crime is unpunished?

Now, more than ever, we need to define what we are as a people, what our dreams are as a nation.

We launch this writing contest to help shape and define those dreams, to start the discussion on what path we should take towards the future.

For more information on the literary contest, visit Faeldon’s website or email him:

Those were the days. I remember reciting that same pledge during flag ceremonies in school. It surely made me misty eyed and homesick even when in fact, home now is SFO, CA, USA, and going to the Philippines, with all the injust-tiis, is in fact more like a nightmare!!!

Abe, Japan’s PM, realized the decline of its youths’ nationalism. He is pushing for the inclusion of what he calls ”Patriotic Curriculum” in primary and secondary level education.

Sad to say, most Filipino youths are no longer acquainted with the lives, deeds and noble sacrifices of our heroes.

Very true, indeed! My ancestral house is only a hundred steps away from the sea where, as a child, I used to wait for the sunrise and sunset. Nothing is more beautiful than my native land!

Filipinas call Japan PM ‘a liar’

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister, said
    he would not apologise [Reuters]

Nearly two dozen Filipino women – some carrying placards saying, “I was raped. PM Abe Liar!” – have picketed the Japanese embassy in Manila after Shinzo Abe said there was no evidence that women were forced into front-line brothels by Japanese troops during World War II.

On Tuesday, China’s foreign minister also condemned Japan and urged Tokyo to take responsibility for its actions.

Abe has angered many in Asia where historians say about 200,000 women were forced into prostitution by Japanese soldiers, saying last week there was no proof women were coerced.

Virginia Villarma, a Filipino woman of 78, said: “We are the living victims and witnesses. How can we be prostitutes then when we were so young and innocent … we are telling Abe that what he said was wrong. He is a liar.”

  11. Following is an excerpt of a post I did in another thread, the thought of which rightfully belongs to this thread:

“I have two suggestions (which, may also be funny to some) to, at least, start the fervor of this fight for a better Philippines:

    – Require all Filipinos (7-year-olds and older) to memorize, understand and live up to the lyrics of “Lupang Hinirang” and the words of Preamble of the Philippine Constitution. (If I were Korina, I would ask my candidate guests to recite/sing a portion of “Lupang Hinirang”… no, itatanong ko na lang kung ano ang pamagat ng Pambansang Awit.

    – Modify the educational system to give more emphasis on Philippine History and Culture from the Filipino perspective (not from Uncle Sam’s)”

    Dear Ellen,

    MAY DISIPLINA

    MAY INTEGRIDAD

  15. hindinapinoy hindinapinoy

ito ang TUNAY na PANATANG MAKABAYAN:

    Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas.
    Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan.
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi.
Ako’y kaniyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan, upang maging malakas, maligaya at kapakipakinabang.

    Ellen,
out of topic but i deem it impt to post it here:

More tha 1,100 journalists killed in a decade.

The Intl News Safety Institute (INSI) showed Philippines as the 4th dangerous place for journalists preceeded by Iraq, Russia and Colombia.

Philippines had a highest death toll outside Iraq.
Philippines was highlighted as among of the dangerous countries where there was a significant level of violence directed against reporters not directly covering conflict.
The dead journalists in these countries have typically been working on stories about corruption, drug traficking and criminal affairs.

”ongoing impunity for the killers of journalists who put themselves in a harm’s way to keep world society informed, shames not only the governments who are responsible for their own lack of action but also the democracies that stand aside in silence.” –Reuters March 6 2007

RE: Sad to say, most Filipino youths are no longer acquainted with the lives, deeds and noble sacrifices of our heroes.

Ka Andres Bonifacio and Macario Sakay cried REBOLUSYON. It’s now a crime under Gloria Arroyo regime. Coup d’etat , rebellion and insurrection are now acts of terrorism under the anti-terrorism bill signed into law. I hope former AFP chief Angelo Reyes and Gloria Arroyo will be prosecuted for alleged coup d’etat in 2001 after regime change. I want them rot in jail.

The rule of law under corrupt Gloria Arroyo regime is prostituted and sometimes bias. Former GMA officials Joc-Joc Bolante and Virgilio Garcillano have committed crimes against the Filipino people. What course of action taken by Gloria Arroyo and the Department of Injustice against them? Malacanang gave them protection and cover-up their crimes. BTW, obstruction of justice, lying, cheating and stealing are not crimes in the Philippines. GMA cronies and loyal military-police generals are rewarded for their crimes. The rule of law is extinct in the Philippines. In the United States, former White House aide I. Lewis Libby was convicted of obstruction, perjury and lying to the FBI in an investigation into the leak of CIA operative’s identity to reporters.

Why not patronize our footwear and garments, and products made in the Philippines, which are even of better quality?

    .

First of all, how do we expect people to buy stuff that is made with nothing more than a pwede na yan manufacturing ethic? Whilst other East Asian countries approach design and manufacturing quality with a rigourous and almost fanatical zeal, Pinoys pride themselves in quaint but unimaginative handicrafts.

The fact that the jeepney is still a source of pride and a symbol of that tired old “Filipino ingenuity” horse-manure slogan says it all.

Whilst we have amongst the tastiest mangoes in the world, we have yet to come up with a global dried mango brand. It takes a multinational like Dole and Del Monte to harvest, can, and brand our equally sweet pinapple produce.

Reciting the Panatang Makabayan whether in English or Tagalog will not make one a better “Filipino” any more than going to Church every Sunday or reciting Our Fathers and Hail Marys ad infinitum necessarily makes one a better Christian.

And while wee’re on the topic, what exactly is a “Filipino”? If you will observe how Pinoys organise themselves overseas, you will see that they are associated along old tribal lines (Cebuanos, Bicolanos, Warays, Tagalogs, etc). There are no Filipino towns in the sense of the way Japanese, Chinese, and Korean communities are defined. Daly City in the Bay Area is a haven for Pinoy gang-banger wannabes and SUVs driven by folks who could hardly see over the dashboards of these enormous gas guzzlers. But do these towns stand for anything?

The name “Philippines” is derived from a Spanish king. We are a country by colonial edict. A motley collection of centuries-old tribes subdued and articicially forced to report to and pay taxes to Manila and speak in what was once an obscure southern Luzon dialect.

Unless we come up with a better way to define ourselves as a people (beyond eating balut, exporting warm bodies to nursing homes, painting old 1940’s technology contraptions, and rote-memorising some old post-war national oath), we will be nothing more than a bunch of Edsa-Revolution-happy folks who can’t seem to get our elections right year after year, decade after decade, bickering over alliances to quaint little no-meaning political parties with cute slogan-cum-acronym names.

If old fogeys are nostalgic about the “glory” of 1950’s Philippines, maybe their generation should ask themselves how accountable their generation is for turning a country that was once the beacon of progress in East Asia into the basket case that was handed over to our generation.

We should question the whole point of continuing to latch on to the values and belief system of a generation of Filipinos who in their own time not only failed to build a prosperous society, but oversaw its degeneration from a promising ex-colony to the reional laughingstock that it is today.

The Pilipino Pledge of Allegiance (Panatang Makabayan) – in English! Interesting, isn’t it? I assume, this is recited after singing “Land of the Morning”, right?

My parents used to tell me the same things and today, I am still amazed how these old people still remember the exact words by heart, whether in English, Japanese, or Pilipino!

The language did not in any way diminish the nationalism of these old folks, the exact opposite of how modern society, courtesy of the “baby boomers”, if you will, waylaid national honor and pride. Go further down the generation ladder and the situation seems hopeless.

Why, my 8-year-old can duplicate the high speed, 5 words-per-second lyrics of Eminem verbatim, and my 5-year-old can sing all songs in “High School Musical” but today I asked both if they can recite the new Panatang Makabayan (not the obsolete one in hindinapinoy’s post above), both were good only up to about one-half.

I guess, nobody cares about nationalism anymore. Or what stands for it. Cars used to stop at flag ceremonies, never mind if it was just ME leading it as a grade-schooler OR it was the corner of Pasong Tamo and Pasay Road OR that traffic is at a halt all the way from EDSA to South Superhigway! Dang, they now even blow their horns when one car attempts to stop while the anthem plays. What’s sad is that it’s not regular folks who do this, it’s the elite, “educated”, Makati white-collared ones!

No wonder, when some people gather in Ayala to show disgust over wrongdoings of liars, cheats, criminals and murderers, or for the pursuit of truth and justice, many complain about, well, traffic.

    BenignO;
In some point I agree with you, but, there is an instance you need to reason out some of your comments and defend your writing, I know you are an intelligent person, so, with all of us bloging here. We are all Jack of All Trades but, Master of none and we are losing a good argument because some of us are dimwits, hot headed or if may I say pikon. This is the real Filipino attitude that we don’t want to cast it away and change it to the positive way. I admit I maybe, one of the above I mention but, who is not? If we want to achieve change in being a true Filipino it is time for us to drop that “fried chicken”attitude and compromise.
Being a Linguist, eloquent in English or fluent in Tagalog does not make an individual well respected, no matter what races.
Philippines was been colonized by different races, The Malays, The Bornean, West Indies until The 10 Bornean Datus settled in our land. Like Datu Sumakwel, Datu Puti, Datu Homobon and other Datu Pontio Pilatos.like Hudas,Datu Masiba,Datu Kurakot,Datu Sukutan Datu Tabatsoy and so on.The Fatsu as I read in this blog is the descendant of “Alexander The Great” I made my own investigation and made up my conclussion.Yes the Fatsu is Apo ni Alejandrong Kuripot. Not even close to the royal blood of the Great Alexander, maybe, another Alexander,”Alexander the Thief” Then the Spaniards,American and Japanese. Now,can anybody can explain to me,Who is A real Filipino?
That negative attitude I mentioned above, we inherited that from our conquistadores. If you speak English you are a descendant of American, you speak spanish your ancestor might be kastila,or if you are singkit you are chinese and if you are sakang hapon ka.Depende kung anong dugo ka nagmula. WWNL,

Britain decided to use its new outpost as a penal colony; the First Fleet of 11 ships carried about 1500 people—half of them convicts. The fleet arrived in Sydney Harbour on 26 January 1788, and it is on this day every year that Australia Day is celebrated.

In all, about 160 000 men and women were brought to Australia as convicts from 1788 until penal transportation ended in 1868. The convicts were joined by free immigrants from the early 1790s. The wool industry and the gold rushes of the 1850s provided an impetus for free settlers to come to Australia.

With reference to UNEDUCATED petty thieves.
The Commonwealth of Thieves: The Sydney Experiment by T.Keneally – Author
In 1787, Britain banished its unwanted citizens – uneducated petty thieves, streetwalkers, orphan chimneysweeps and dashing highwaymen – to the fringes of the known world.
So remote was Botany Bay – the destination to which the overcrowded, disease-ridden convict ships were bound – that only one European expedition had ever before anchored there. Yet the rejects of Britain, accompanied only by a flimsy complement of soldiers, marines and officers, were expected to start a settlement and flourish. It was an audacious social experiment, unparalleled before or since.

Finding a more detailed reference takes a little longer (smile).

I will heed the counsel of my parents
I will obey the rules of my school
    I will perform my duties
    Unselfishly and faithfully.
I will be A True Filipino
In thought, in words, in deed.

    .

Note the undertones of the passage above. It is almost like a subliminal message that indoctrinates into Filipinos a mindset of submission and delegation of thinking faculties to the authorities.

I do not know the history behind this oath, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something composed and disseminated by the Americans or by the inheritors of their political power (the leaders of the Philippine Commonwealth, and eventually the soveriegn government that took over in 1946).

So I find it ironic that the very people who rail against the Philippine elite, the trapos, and the “dastardly” deeds of our ex-colonial masters latch on to this quaint passage thinking that delighting in it actually makes one a better “Filipino”.

That simply heightens my admiration for how well the concept of “Filipino” nationalism was engineered by the old Commonwealth Government and propagated by today’s politicians from either side of the spectrum. You will hear “tunay na Pilipino” bandied around both by leftists and rightists. The ultimate target of this propaganda? Who else but the ordinary Pinoy schmoe.

In fact I wrote an article about this bizarre phenomenon several years ago:
    http://www.geocities.com/benign0/agr-disagr/16-nat.html

Just look through the comments on this blog. Many people here blindly parrot the brilliantly engineered taglines of the Elite — the very people that commentors here profess their hatred for.

    Pathetic.

Heroes? I know Rizal and Bonifacio sacrificed their lives for their country but there are so-called “heroes and heroines” in Philippine history who should not have been honored thus!

When I was a young girl, I remember my maternal grandfather running after my kuya for taunting him about Aguinaldo, whom my grandfather hated with vile in his lips! He was the one who watched his cousin, Antonio Luna, killed by those Macabeben bodyguards of Aguinaldo, and reason why my grandfather would make sure first Aguinaldo was not in the independence parade at Luneta when he joined his fellow Ilocano KKKs marching there even when they were actually near their graves then.

My grandfather was 23 when he joined the KKK. I just cannot remember what he said saved him from death under the hands of those Macabebens led by that Macapagal guy.

I’m writing a history of my own family, especially my Mother’s, but it is only for distribution to my siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces close to my mother. I’m also producing a DVD of her life history. I can only make a kind of slide presentation of pictures of her younger days.

It’s something we do actually in church—search our roots for spiritual reason!

  41. Who says that they were all idiots who were dumped in Australia by the British. There must be intellectuals among them, I guess. Still, they were convicted criminals.

I understand the French sent their criminals, too, to the penal colony in the USA, probably the French guarters in Louisiana.

In the same way, the Philippines was more or less a refuge for the freemen, convicts and criminals, except perhaps for those mountain people in the Mt. Province who must be relatives of the tribes in Indo-China and Taiwan, no Chinese aborigins!!! I was surprised to find the similarity in their weave designs and weaving style with the natives in the Ifugao and Apayao!

Unfortunately, the National Archives, etc. that should be researching on these things like what they used to do during the Marcos regime when a doctor headed the National Archives and he did a lot of research works on the history of the Philippines (Sorry, I forgot his name), unlike under this bogus regime when the Curator at the National Archive is given the responsibility to forge old records especially against anyone opposing the fake president. Palibhasa “ang magnanakaw galit sa kapwa magnanakaw!”

  42. I forgot to mention, but the Philippines has recently in fact become a safe haven for members of crime gangs in Japan, and other criminals running away from the law in Japan. Kung ano ang pangalan, iyong ang kalalabasan. Kaya ang daling gawan ng kalokohan na Get Out daw! No way! 44. Yes, Abe is right. There are no records to prove that the Japanese Imperial Army used Filipino women as comfort women, who were in fact drafted into the military. Nagreklamo lang iyong mga Koreana na hindi na-qualify for pension because they would not get Japanese citizenship, which was a requirement.

As for this Valderama girl, baka naman victim lang iyan ng rape. Bakit noon hindi sila nagreklamo when the US was gathering data to try the war prisoners responsible for invading the Philippines, and committing such atrocities that are comparably milder according to people in the resistance in Iraq now.

There are available records of this drafting of the comfort women in the Japanese National Archive. Historians are free now to research on these declassified information. Hindi iyong kiyaw-kiyaw na wala namang ebidensiya. May katwiran si Abe. Ang ayaw ko lang ngayon is his proposal to strengthen Japan’s Self-Defense Force. Iyan ang kinakalaban namin ngayon!

  45. I should add that over in Japan, you don’t have any substantial visible proofs like documents, etc., it is hard to file a claim. Filipinos are fond of making affidavits at ang daming sinungaling, so no proof, no claim!!!

Kahit kasi sino, puedeng sabihin, ginahasa ako (kahit nga lalaki ngayon nagagahasa!), but where is the proof. I bet you a lot many of them soldiers then are now 6 feet underground.

Yan ang tunay na Japanese… always in defense of the Japanese stand and in praise of anythinhg Japanese.

However, being a Filipino, I am also obliged to defend the position of these Filipina “comfort” women, if only in this blog.

Abe is looking for documents/records to prove that the JIA used Filipinas as “comfort” women during the war? He won’t find any. Who, in his right mind, would record, even document, his own crimes?

Pag Pinay sa Japan or elsewhere, they get casted as prostitutes and we, as Filipinos, don’t get alarmed? Worse, we even join the chorus?

“As for this Valderama girl, baka naman victim lang iyan ng rape. Bakit noon hindi sila nagreklamo when the US was gathering data to try the war prisoners responsible for invading the Philippines, and committing such atrocities that are comparably milder according to people in the resistance in Iraq now.”

When did the Americans start gathering data? Right after the war? Who among the “comfort” women back then would have the courage to come out in the open and say that hundreds, even thousands of Japanese soldiers feasted on her body? Back then, even being raped attached a stigma to it that no woman, if she wanted to live with dignity, would admit to being raped. The first Filipina woman who courageously came out in the open to hail her rapists to court was Maggie dela Riva sometime in the late 60s- long after this data gathering had been wrapped up.

Please undestand our history from where we stand as Filipinos. Maybe then, I wouldn’t get blamed (or called names) if I join the rally in front of the Japanese Embassy in Manila.

What’s sad is that it’s not regular folks who do this, it’s the elite, “educated”, Makati white-collared ones!”

Sad fact…

Nationalism is the corner stone of the economic success of a country. Japan is a classic example of this. Ravaged by the war, it came back roaring because of inherent nationalism. Filipinos lack this trait. We would prefer to buy imported stuff over locally produced. Quality is what we lack. But we have a lot of products that are in demand in other countries. Our exotic handicrafts are loved all over the world. Personally, I love our natural fibers for clothes. I buy all my summer clothes in the Philippines. I patronize our products. I love Sunsilk shampoo and our condiments like Knorr sinigang. I buy wood carvings, native blankets and fresh water pearls for gifts. Imagine this, if the over 8 million balikbayans buy these products to bring to the country they work in, imagine the income that the Philippines can generate from these purchases! I stopped buying products from other countries that I can find in the Philippines. I realize that when one goes to Europe, the US and all these first world countries, everything one buys is made in China. So why spend all you hard earned money just to buy a product that is made in China? When travelling, I look for “made in the Philippines” and buy these products. The exported Philippine products have quality control and are just as good as the products made somewhere else. This is the only way I know I can help my country a lot!

Nationalism should be taught and practiced at an early age. As a matter of fact, we should include a subject on this in the elementary curriculum. Part of this subject should include respect for our patrimony. To our local manufacturers, they should improve their products for home consumption too. We know how to produce excellent products for other countries, why can’t we do the same for our own use?

I also try to instill honesty and respect in all Filipinos. Wherever I go, if I see something that is not right, I call the attention of the concerned and give them a piece of my mind, constructively.

The incarcerated soldiers’ ideologies may be lofty! If these soldiers are able to reach the youth through the internet and raise the youths’ awareness to Nationalism, responsibility and social conscience, these soldiers have done more than their part.

  59. nelbar:

When I was still in the Philippines, that was Marcos time I custom tailored my whole outfit, The tailoring shop that I patronized is sending all his children from Elementary up to college and they are generating a good income. Along the University belt in Recto there was a shoe store in that area who customized a leather boots if you remember the early 70’s, I bought mine in that place. I don’t want to brag but, I am telling you the truth, that year was a “Hang-ten” Adidas and Culduroy era Usong Tate, pag naka Tate ka noon ay sikat ka sa Collegio.

“(10) old fogeys are nostalgic about the “glory” of 1950’s Philippines, maybe their generation should ask themselves how accountable their generation is for turning a country that was once the beacon of progress in East Asia into the basket case
    (11) We should question the whole point of continuing to latch on to the values and belief system of a generation of Filipinos who in their own time not only failed to build a prosperous society, but oversaw its degeneration”

Correct. The previous generation is at fault for not building a sustainable prosperous society. I think some female bloggers here belong to that generation. Foremost in their minds then was to migrate, which they were able to do.

BK, I am reminded of Assperon crying when tiyanak announced that she was not running for presidency anymore. It did the trick, he got promoted to the Cheat of Staff. They do not have any nationalism at all because all they know is to fabricate stuff so they can keep the tiyanak in power. Never mind the citizenry. BK, you know why Senga was teary eyed? Because he failed his officers in standing for the truth. He betrayed his men whose sole intention was to protest the election cheating of the tiyanak. Senga failed these officers and handed them them in a silver platter to the tiyanak and Assperon. Look what these officers and their families are going through. Maybe Senga is teary eyed every day because in exchange for turning in these officers to tiyanak, he got nothing but crumbs in his promotion, a position not equivalent to the mega sacrifice he did for turning in these brave officers who wanted their grievances addressed. Like Judas, Senga will forever be teary eyed until these incarcerated officers get the justice they so deserve. I wonder if Senga sleeps good at night knowing fully well how his officers are now being treated like shit by Assperon!

Benigno, you are what you are, critical and negative but this may be your style of venting your frustrations. Although I agree with you that Filipinos are not at all perfect and we need so much more to educate them to be at par with other civilized countries, there is no excuse for you to berate them. If everyone has the same approach like you do, maybe, we can qualify for a first world country or maybe we all die with kunsumisyon!

The Philippine Island is a beautiful land. It is the sindicate that made it republic kuno by the likes of Gloria Pidal!

  77. If everyone has the same approach like you do, maybe, we can qualify for a first world country or maybe we all die with kunsumisyon!

    .

Well, the kids’ gloves approach didn’t work. If you look around, you will find that the Web abounds in positive info about Pinoys. Lots of sugarcoating around what is basically a society that suffers from the profoundest of cancers.

The Philippines is a beautiful land. It is the people that made it ugly.

This of course sounds ugly and negative. But that observation doesn’t change the fact of the matter. How well a statement sounds to our ears is not a reliable indicator of how true a statement is.

Not that I am a big fan of Americans but you will notice that among the most enduringly beautiful human-carved places in the Philippines — Baguio and Subic Bay — were the works of Americans. The showcase tourist spot in Manila is the old Spanish-built enclave of Intramuros. You will find the Ayala Center — largely the work of a clan of Spanish taipans — on the front page of many business brochures promoting Manila.

    Yes the truth hurts.

    Cam we handle the truth?

    I want to share..

Yung iba nag-US, Europe.

May nanghihinayang, namumuhi at naaawa.

Tama man o mali. May malasakit man, nahihilaw. Ni di nga ako kinikilalang ina. Halos lahat sila galit saisa’t isa.

Gusto kong isigaw: “INA NINYO AKO! MAHALIN NYO NAMAN AKO!”

Salamat ha, pinakinggan mo ako. Ay sorry, di ko pala nasabi….

    Benigno:
I am going to give you my insight view why the government has also be blamed from my previous writing that you criticized.
People live on basic necessities, food, housing and shelter. Since you mentioned SM and Jollibees we will going to have some discussion about that too. What is the disadvantages of a business monopolies to the other small business operator.
Let’s discuss the topic of my posting about the outfit—-clothing—
Before a small business such as tailoring and dressmaking, they were making money and they can afford to send their children in schools and they were also having a good life.

    Benign0,
You have a lot in your mind and I commend you for your effective use of the english language. However, I find some of your ideas too idealistic and not practical.

    Cocoy,
I think we belong to the same generation – Manlapat, Toppers, etc. The University Belt was my ‘home’ during my college days. Sure, they were good times. But things change. RTW is the way to go now. More efficient and cheaper. One of my friends had and I say ‘had’ an RTW business supplying SM, Robinson’s, etc until she got double-crossed. Her parner ran away with most of their business capital.

RTW is okey if the finished product they are selling is Philippine made. But,If it is smuggled from another country that’s a different scenario. We can import raw materials,’cause that’s essential things we are lacking for a finished product.
Our economy will be disadvantageous if we all engage in RTW.Just imagine,if we need to buy a metric tons of goods to supply the demand. How many jobs that is supposed to belong to our people that was been lost?

  103. cocoy cocoy

    Titser:
Our government agencies to protect the consumers are ineffective.
Last Monday, I watched XXX on TFC. It was shocking! Del Monte products was imitated with a fake produce that was being sold in the market. The copying machine to duplicate forge copy of the label product was sophisticated and it was been on operation for so long. Just how much money the government lost in revenue not, counting the people’s health at risk. If the TV anchors personalities can do a good expose, Why our government can’t?
What are the people who swear to serve our safety, doing?
This is what I want to ask Benigno, why, we will not suppose to blame the government but, the people .I hope he can give me a good reasoning. He always defend the government and put a blame on our people’s misfortune.

  104. Diwata,

“Tama po bang sabihin na “Government is the FACILITATOR of progress and not the SOURCE of it”?”

IMHO, this is the ideal situation where the government, as the FACILITATOR, not only guides but cultivates an environment conducive to progress. The people, being ideally sovereign, will always be the SOURCE of everything- government can ony excercise power and authority which emante and ultimately reside in the people.

    Titser:

“How true. Just look at Manila today. Littering isn’t a crime anymore. It’s a way of life.”

Funny how rules have become exemptions. Though, it is the general apathy of the people that brought us to where we are now, I still hold this government accountable- pervious governments allowed this seeming apathy to get way offhand… here comes GMA who, instead of trying to turn the tide back, even rode on the tide and capitalized on the people’s apathy by doing her things in the wee hours of the morning. Remember when Congress proclaimed her victory one early morning in 2004? Remember when Congress, in trying to please the powers-that-be, rang the bell one early morning in 2006, while Juan dela Cruz was soundly asleep, to announce the death of the people’s Constitution?

  105. titser titser

    cocoy,
There are TRW outfits in PI. You can even find Ralph Laurens made in RP.

Regarding the fake products, the Government and the ‘FAKERS’ are equally to blame. Don’t get mad if I say Filipinos are good in making Fakes. Pirated DVDs and CDs are being sold and bought openly. Sure, it’s the Government’s responsibility to stop it, but the people themselves are also responsible. It’s not an excuse that people buy these things out of poverty because these are not necessities like food. And we should not absolve the vendors either by
reasoning out that they need to earn a living.

  106. titser titser

    ka enchong,
How sad isn’t it? The people’s apathy leads to our leader’s exploitation of the people. And the people’s reaction is not to follow rules. It’s a vicious cycle.

RE: Buy Filipino Products: Promoting and patronizing them is good for the country.

    What is Filipino nationalism?
We should accept the fact that the Philippines is the dumping ground of China’s cheap surplus products. China is the world’s manufacturing capital. The government encourages Filipinos to buy only Filipino or locally made products unless these products are substandard or priced significantly higher compared to their imported counterparts. This is meaningless and unrealistic policy. Why? Cheap and high quality products have flooded the market due to technical smuggling. Technical smuggling cannot exist without the collusion of unscrupulous traders and corrupt government personnel and officials. Technical smuggling killing shoe, garments, textile industries and ceramic tiles industries. Textile used to be the highest foreign exchange earner in the Philippines. Cheap as dirt Chinese onions and other produce have flooded the market. BTW, Cosmos Sarsaparilla, Sarsi for short, once the Philippines’ most popular drink, is no longer Filipino. Its owner has moved to the US as an indirect subsidiary of Atlanta-based The Coca-Cola Company. There will be a time that Sarsi manufacturing and bottling will be sent to China due cheaper production and labor cost.

Nationalism makes the state serve the people, where nation-state systems make the people serve the state.

  113. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Present struggle for revival and the “True Filipino”

Modern-day Philippine nationalism is highly conceptualized by revolutionary historians. Teodoro Agoncillo emphasized the role of the people in making their own history. Renato Constantino emphasized the revolutionary theoretical groundwork for the making of new “True Filipino”. Someone who can transcend the cultural and geographical boundaries that had been the cause for disunity. Someone who can shed away his western soul and create the New Filipino identity. Other historians, like Rudy B. Rodil, work for the destruction of the boundaries between Moros and Filipinos–suggesting that a True Filipino does not live in the prejudices of religious belief.
One common theme among all is the recognition of the threat of American intervention and Globalization. As long as there will be no strong leader to help in the development of a new Philippine nationalism, then it can be considered dead, for now. From Wikipedia

  114. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

RE: One common theme among all is the recognition of the threat of American intervention and Globalization. As long as there will be no strong leader to help in the development of a new Philippine nationalism, then it can be considered dead, for now.

Fidel Ramos and Gloria Arroyo are advocates of free trade and globalization. Therefore, bogus President Gloria Arroyo is part of the problem. Gloria Arroyo free trade policy is anti-Filipino. Ousting her is part of the solution. PATALSIKIN NA NGAYON NA!

  115. Benign0,
You have a lot in your mind and I commend you for your effective use of the english language. However, I find some of your ideas too idealistic and not practical.

Salamat po ‘tser. But another titser of mine also told me that one has to aspire for perfection to be able to achieve excellence at the very least.

So while the aspiration may be perfect, a less-than-perfect outcome is perfectly acceptable. 😉

    .
Just look at Manila today. Littering isn’t a crime anymore. It’s a way of life.

It always has been. Our esteros were never designed to be conduits of sewage. But look at them now. There are also entire generations of Pinoys being born, growing up, and feeding off mounds of rubbish. These Pinoys pretty much grew up in an environment of trash and are therefore disentisised to it. So if you think Pinoys today are merely tolerant of trash, the future generation of Pinoys will actually thrive on it. 😀

Pinoy expats are also not exempt from this love of trash. The Pinoy community here is renowned for its annual October fiestas, not because of the festivities but because of the mounds of rubbish left behind. That event has been refused from many venues already because of that. That event used to be held in prestigious venues. Now it is held in just another one of those ghetto parks.

    .
Sometimes Benigno’s tactic may work but knowing how most Filipinos are, it will just be on deaf ears.

Actually, you’ve got the right idea there.

    Pinoys are motivated by hiya.

It explains the irony behind why we keep our homes spick and span homes yet allow mounds of rubbish to pile up just outside in our streets. We exhibit hiya for our selves and therefore are motivated to keep our personal stuff clean, but find no merit in extending this accountability to the community level.

So it seems that the only incentive for Pinoys to work towards progress is hiya:

    Kelangan pahiyain ang Pinoy.

Everyone talks about kicking one another’s a$$ to get moving on working towards progress. I think we’ve found the perfect boot to do precisely that. It’s called hiya. It’s a perfect fit that I think will leave a lasting mark on most Pinoys’ behinds. 😀

Time is running out though. We can see all around us how hiya is losing its effectiveness. Marami nang walang-hiya sa ating lipunan.

    Time is running out.

SHAME campaign does not work anymore. Delicadeza is extinct. Look at the new crop of leaders and bureaucrats, scandals after scandals they are still holding public office. Kapalmuks! The culture of corruption is malignant cancer. Strengthening the justice system may not be the silver bullet. Philippine courts should keep its independence and free from political influence. The Ombudsman has a mandate to go after corruptors but doing the reverse, protecting and cover-up their crimes. Hello Garci! Hello Joc-Joc Bolante!

So, besides stop paying taxes, “hiya” is the “perfect” cure? Shall we aspire perfection in “panghihiya” to achieve excellence? I laughed the first time. How should I react this time?

Ka Enchong, we don’t have to go far to see shining examples of garbage control, just travel to Bangkok or Singapore and not so much as a candy paper to be seen in the streets.
The people there told me that the reason was simple in that an on-the-spot fine of equivalent to 1,000 peso was the penalty. But without saying, these two places have a respected police service who’s numbers and professionalism can produce such a service to the community.
But maybe it also shows that rules about discarding garbage has to be backed up by an enforced penalty, but again we don’t have a ‘proper’ professional police service.
Which opens another topic: if we as a country allow the AFP to fool around playing at being policemen when it suits them with no real mandate to do so, our PNP will forever be 2nd Class at best and we the citizen are the one’s paying for the inability for government to govern by saying “Its up to the AFP to decide to patrol the slum areas – What! – Hello who’s running this country the government or the military”
Lets face it they cannot even control garbage in the streets Enough is Enough.

And while one pundit here practically absolves the government from any blame, or at least, from being singled out, the Philippines again ranked among the lowest (61st out of 65 countries) in attractiveness as a mining investment destination. Investing in the rich and beautiful country’s vaunted mineral deposits made ugly by its government.

So says a Canadian research group, Fraser Institute, which found that more than 40 percent of the 3,000 respondents criticized the Philippines as “having duplicative and inconsistent regulations deterring investments in mining.”

The report even exposed that a mining company president was threatened with death if the company’s assets weren’t handed over to the local partner. As usual, the partner is a “malakas” and never even got investigated. Hey, “palakasan” is another cultural characteristic of Pinoys. No need for expert confirmation from Mr. Perfect.

I guess making pahiya won’t make any dent at all if the official concerned is determined to “kill” foreign investors, figuratively and literally. “Padrino” system (Gospel according to BenignO, Chapter 4, Verses 19-66) rears its ugly head and hands over in a silver platter the whole mining deal to a local sponsor after the mine’s foreign proponent submits the feasibility of full-scale ore extraction. Sabi nga ng local partner, “It’s a steal!”

Trade matters in any country being run professionally by government, say in Europe, are inspected & controlled by the DTI. In those countries not only do they control the company names being registered, it goes much further, such as if a complaint against a company reaches the DTI they take up an investigation. As an example: if you were to complaint that a auto workshop charged for but failed to use the parts or even failed to produced prefessional labor to properly repair your auto they the DTI would send an undercover member of their team complate with a car with a fault only known to the DTI to test the services to the customer by the auto woekshop. Here the DTI couldn’t give a fig about the customers complaint.
But the DTI here is mandated to do the same service. So who’s fault is this, the customer, the workshop, the DTI or the government. Another of many cases of rules being in place but nobody to supervise or impliment the rules.
This is not Filipino habit, this is why all governments have a DTI, this is worldwide even Australian government!

Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely considered to have been one of the greatest physicists of all time. While best known for the theory of relativity (and specifically mass-energy equivalence, E=mc²), he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the photoelectric effect.

Einstein’s many contributions to physics include his special theory of relativity, which reconciled mechanics with electromagnetism, and his general theory of relativity which extended the principle of relativity to include gravitation. Other contributions include relativistic cosmology, capillary action, critical opalescence, classical problems of statistical mechanics and their application to quantum theory, an explanation of the Brownian movement of molecules, atomic transition probabilities, the quantum theory of a monatomic gas, thermal properties of light with low radiation density (which laid the foundation for the photon theory), a theory of radiation including stimulated emission, the conception of a unified field theory, and the geometrization of physics.

Nuclear energy wasn’t invented to produce domestic electricity. It was invented to produce a bomb. The bomb’s high energy can be changed into slow motion and produce energy in smaller increments for domestic heat as a substitute for fire But the interest in doing this comes totally from trying to redeem one of the world’ s most destructive applications of science.

Recall what happened to the professional community, before and after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the first tests, there was a report imploring Truman to invite the Japanese to see the test but not to use the bomb. The physicists were very clear that a demonstration would have been good enough. As history has since shown, Japan was about ready to surrender. But they did that incredible thing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

At that point the professions split. There were people saying “We will never again do military or secret research.” But there were other people who wanted to redeem the investment in equipment, in their careers. So nuclear energy technology came out in order to say that there must have been something good in that horrible science. But forty years later, the fact is that there isn’t.

On August 2, 1939, just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote to the then President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Einstein and several other scientists told Roosevelt of efforts in Nazi Germany to purify uranium-235, which could be used to build an atomic bomb. It was shortly after that, that the United States Government began the serious undertaking known then only as “The Manhattan Project” which was committed to expediting research that would produce a viable atomic bomb.

Tony Tan Caktiong – owns Jollibee
    John Gokongwei – owns Robinson’s
Lucio Tan – owns Philippine Airlines
(not sure about Lucio Tan, but everybody else built their empires from scratch) characteristics? they were all hardworking also lucky in business.
Henry Sy used to sell shoes that he bought from different parts of the Philippines. He was so hardworking, that he had different “ages”, like when he used to transport the shoes by bicycle, it was called his “bicycle age”, through his hard work, he was able to put up a shoe store, that evolved to a Mall, and he was able to put up huge malls all over the place.
Tony Tan Caktiong started with a small restaurant, he wanted to go for “langhap sarap” which basically means he wanted the food he sold to be as good as it smells. Eventually, his business became the largest food chain in the Philippines. Also outlets abroad.
Many smaller filipino businessmen copied their ideas in their local areas in a smaller way but are not household names.

we cannot deny that the genral masa are pasaway. i am not for it but the presence of the militaries in certain areas during the past few days showed that there were decrease in crime rate in the concerned areas. what does that show? our local barangays are useless! our local police are useless!..puro photo-ops at saturation drive pagka may tip na may bibisita na official so “kailangang may ipakita na kumikilos ang lugar natin ek-ek”…on the other hand these military presence should have the brains to see the real picture of the country. they should be thinking that “hanggang ganito nalang ba ang bansa na ipinagtatanggol ko?..hanggang ganito nalang ba kaming mga sundalo?”…Lim’s actions way back may not be as humane as some people might say, but the effectivity was obvious. the previous management of brenda in the immigration bureau was effective in riddling of illegal transactions.
the system is always weak whatever kind of politician will be there. as long as the root is rotten, the fruits will always be half-rippen. we can list an endless “racket” every administration has come up with but in the end, the general public forgets where the hard-earned pesos end up.

In between I find time to visit barrio’s to assist with various projects because they really need assistance, not getting it from local congressmen..
Sometimes, in my rare quiet moments I think I must be insane to continue, its not the money its the challenge.
Am I successful? only because I had a restaurant competitor directly alongside me and I gave my customer a bigger varied menue, better quality food at the cheapest price possible. My customer base grew beyond all expectations to the point that I ‘stole’ my competitors customers and he closed down, only because he didn’t rise to the challenge and I have good hardworking staff. I don’t feel happy about that but business is business, you either become successful by accomodating the customer or you fail your customer and yourself. Flash!

Lalong nagtawanan.

Bakit kaya doon? Itanong mo sa Nanay mo!

She was addressing the employees during the celebration of the International Women’s Day at the Astrodome. She asked the crowd how many have benefited from her micro-financing program. The resounding answer was a big “NO”. When she asked if they are enjoying the P1,000 allowance she promised last year, she got another big “NO”. She was then met with catcalls and hoots from the crowd. These are government employees.

She looked startled and started asking the program directors for answers. Myrna Yao the program director said they never had any programs for the employees. Napahiya yata and she just left. Later, the said director was nowhere to be found. Puro promises that never materialize.

  190. Some food for thought (according to a renowned Pinoy economist based in New York):

    ————-
There’s a weird culture in our midst: our jocular regard for our national problems, great crimes, villainous scams and calamities. Note that Filipinos are notorious for making fun, creating a joke of their misfortunes. The cellulars are full of them now. In other countries inhabited by serious and sensitive people, they mount crusades, indignation rallies or nationwide relief campaigns to meet such crises. They would weep or stomp their feet, or explode in anger, or demand punishment for the criminals or misfits. Here we tend to laugh at scams, crimes and natural calamities, as if they are part of the usual TV noon comedy shows, the Pinoy’s daily diet.

It’s very hard to be intellectual if you aren’t serious. And so far the clear evidence is that we are not a serious people. Worse, we don’t like to think.

“Hey Dude”.

Paul McCartney said The original title was “Hey Jules”, and it was intended to comfort Julian Lennon from the stress of his parent’s divorce. “I started with the idea ‘Hey Jules’, which was Julian, don’t make it bad, take a sad song and make it better. Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing. I knew it was not going to be easy for him. I always feel sorry for kids in divorces … I had the idea [for the song] by the time I got there. I changed it to ‘Jude’ because I thought that sounded a bit better.
So, seems it has nothing to do with the expression Dude!

I apologise for missing your comment the first time around, but it’s worth pointing out that I did say that many ‘Filipio’ had copied them with varying success all over the Philippines in their local business areas.
I realised when I was posting my original message that these successful businessmen were of ‘Chinese’ origin. But because of the vast areas and extent that these particular traders deal in its difficult to see evidence that its because of their family origins, although that could be true.
Due to the fact that these kind of business’ found in the example of successful Filipino is similar to that of a pyramid, only a few businessmen are seen to reach the top.

One of the most repeated questions here is “what have you done?”. To answer that, I would say, making my opinion about current issues known is one of them. Though, I believe, bloggers here are “doing” more than this, I don’t think this is the space for anyone to harp on his accomplishments elsewhere, nation-building-related or not.

Whatever good it is I did towards “fighting” for a better Philippines and a better image for Filipinos everywhere, I’d rather keep them to myself.

Blogging, I think, is all about expressing opinion without passing them off as facts. It is also about passing off facts, and the opinion generated by the posters of the fact.

Filipinos have the tendency to laugh issues off, that’s true. But, I am sure that behind the laughter, something inside turns the stomach upside down… hence, this blog is here.

Again, I hate the Pidals so much that I do not want to be like them- silencing critics by threatening them with harm.

    .
    Pinoy ka nga talaga.

I posted another note from Ren about a site put up by some blogger about the Fat Guy.

    Here’s the tag:

Ano yan? Patriotism by convenience? I have a feeling nga na yung mga malalakas ang loob na magtatatalak dito ay may green card na o approve na ang migration to Canada. Yung bang when push comes to shove, all they have to do is hop onboard a plane out of ‘Pinas.

(take note, iba ang MIGRATE sa ‘being an OFW.’ at least ang OFW may intent to return pa to his country. eh ang migrant? INABANDON ANG BAYAN)

True examples of people who ASKED WHAT THEIR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR THEM, IMBES NA ASKING WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR THEIR COUNTRY.

At least the G-rand A-lliance of G-neuine O-pposition and their supporters ARE HERE. Damning the torpedoes of Ate Glue.

  221. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To benignO:

“Goes to show that our politicians merely reflect the people who elect them”

True.

  222. “Ano yan? Patriotism by convenience? I have a feeling nga na yung mga malalakas ang loob na magtatatalak dito ay may green card na o approve na ang migration to Canada. Yung bang when push comes to shove, all they have to do is hop onboard a plane out of ‘Pinas.

(take note, iba ang MIGRATE sa ‘being an OFW.’ at least ang OFW may intent to return pa to his country. eh ang migrant? INABANDON ANG BAYAN)”

It is really easy to say “this is what must be done” when one has everything to gain if the plan succeeds, but nothing to loseif it fails. It is easy to pontificate if one does not have any stake in the issues at hand.

Personally, I do not find even the Dual Citizenship Law as helpful to the Philippine cause… but, that’s another story altogether.

  223. “(take note, iba ang MIGRATE sa ‘being an OFW.’ at least ang OFW may intent to return pa to his country. eh ang migrant? INABANDON ANG BAYAN)”

Another OFW here… Hindi lang “intent to return”, kundi “intent to remain a Filipino hanggang sa hukay”.

Sabi ko naman sa kaniya, “Mom, I’m not in the US or the Philippines. This is Japan and I have police connection and protection.” Besides, dito pantay-pantay.

  226. Come to think of it.

In one of the threads, you said “marami sa kanila, magnanakaw naman” referring to Filipinos who own designer stuffs. While emphasizing “marami, hindi lahat” does not make your allegations lighter, it does reflect your tendency to classify the good Filipino as only those who can afford not to steal.

Democracy is a free marketplace of ideas. Please tackle ideas head on without resorting to ad hominem attacks.

Lastly, ask ourselves why we hate GMA and the Pidals so much. Then, ask ourselves if we are behaving differently from the way they do. Again, we cannot be like the Pidals we hate so much. Otherwise, we will only be called oppositionists because we are opposed only to the fact that the Pidals are in power and we are not.

  228. Those who profess their love for the Filipino, they must profess this love for the Filipino, warts and all. Otherwise, it’s “patriotism for convenience” (sorry, Anthony, I borrowed your term here).

The Predictors by Thomas A. Bass

    Marrying for Money

The game of professional investment is intolerably boring and overexacting to anyone who is entirely exempt from the gambling instinct; whilst he who has it must pay to this propensity the appropriate toll
    — JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES

The gambling passion lurks at the bottom of every heart.

  270. And I doubt, Chi, that it is love of country for Filipinos to go overseas, victimize and cause shame to all their fellow countrymen even for the sake of saving their families back home from pverty and hunger.

You have not experienced the kind of reception Filipino women here get because of the pimping of Filipino women by their own government that deploys them to Japan disguised as entertainers complete with those blue books issued by the POEA, but are in fact hostesses cum prostitutes in bars and clubs in Japan. At least, I can hide behind my Japanese face, but I don’t feel good hearing Filipinos being called derogatorily as “Japayukis,” which actually means prostitutes, and reason why I feel it a grave insult being called “Japayuko.”

I can actually file a case of defamation against anyone calling me thus as a a matter of fact. It is considered criminal in Japan because here is a society where losing face is tantamount to suicide.

It is different, however, from the case filed by the Fatso against legitimate journalists who have every right and duty to publish evidences of his wrongdoings and hunky-punky activities that in more progressive societies would be enough to move the police to carry on a massive investigation to prove their (the journalists’) allegations and eventually bring him to justice.

  278. chi chi

Excuse me, Ellen.

its always good to look at things at a different perspective. whether in importation of goods and where a local counterpart is said to be in danger. sadly, some people dont see things in a long term basis. puro panakip butas-solution not looking for the cause. we were exporting rice decades ago, the neighboring countries were studying rice here in los banos laguna, where are we in rice production now? why did this happen? bec somewhere along the way, the supposed to be think-tank of economy began to be selfish and just power hungry. we pride on being a call-center mill…ok till when?, we pride of our design and creativity savvy, what happend? the designs are copied by china, vietnam, thailand..or we have people who have no pride but just to earn a living to feed their family?

  287. chi chi

May halo kasi silang Europa. On the contrary, a noted consulted once described how pathetically onion-skinned Pinoys are. Check it out here:

    http://www.apmforum.com/columns/orientseas48.htm

    Excerpt:
    ===============
Basic books on Filipino culture (and a number of Pearl columns) emphasize just how sensitive Filipinos are and how important it is to avoid open criticism. I would refer you to such sources as Alfredo and Grace Roces’ Culture Shock! Philippines, Theodore Gochenour’s Considering Filipinos, or any of F. Lando Jocano’s excellent intercultural books (in particular Filipino Worldview: Ethnography of Local Knowledge and Working with Filipinos: A Cross-Cultural Encounter.)

While I am always conscious of this issue in interpersonal relationships in the Philippines, I hadn’t really thought that much about how it plays out in the broader context of intercultural debate. Now, however, the bruises incurred in the battles described in “1. The Facts” have made me acutely aware of how much Filipinos hate being criticized and (especially) how much they hate foreigners (or other Pinoys for that matter) being critical of the Philippines.

It’s not much of a stretch to refer to it as an “onion skin” mentality.

Pasensya ka na Mr. Scalia. You’re barking up the wrong tree. Most Pinoys can’t really grasp the difference between sticking-to-the-issues and argumentum ad hominem. 317. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To Mrivera:

    mandaraya! magnanakaw! sinungaling!

    now na!

  321. “DAHIL LUMALABAS NA RIN ANG KATOTOHANAN – NA LAHAT KAYONG ANTI-GMA BLOGGERS DITO, AY HANGGANG DOON LANG (SIPAIN GMA) ANG NAKIKITA!”

    Anthony:

  323. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To nelbar:

  325. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To Ka Enchong:

Okay, the emperor wears no clothes? What next?

  326. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To nelbar:

“payat ang pag-iisip mo anthony scalia”

    ikaw din

“galing ako sa state U, ikaw saang ka galing?”

    pareho tayo

    “magsama kayo ni Tony Mo?”

    hindi. kayong dalawa siguro

“magtayo kayo ng sugalan na lotto!”

    tell me how

“ipinagtatanggol mo ang mga kauri mo? ”

takes for the reminder na kelangang ipagtanggol din kita.

    “nag ma-masters ka pa?”

    yes

    “ako dito lang sa blog!”

    noted

bakit, kaya mong bayaran? ikaw, di ko kayang bayaran ang rate mo. inggit nga ako sa iyo eh. you have the very deep pockets of erap and his cronies.

When an infant starts learning how to walk and stumbles after a few steps, do we tell him to give up?

Kaya lang, who’s going to train/educate these hungry bunch?

Huwag na nating asahan ang gobyerno dito, it can’t even be a good example. The rationale behind the “Let’s move on” platform of GMA is much like saying there’s nothing wrong with an examinee who cheated, he could have passed the exams without cheating, anyway (Remember GMA’s defenders moving heaven and earth just to prove that even if questionable returns were disregarded, she would have won, anyway? Remember them repeating this mantra even after GMA’s now famous “I am sorry” speech?

Let us, in our own little ways, help in training/educating the hungry so they’d vote with their heads, not with their stomachs. It may be very difficult, but it can be done.

“Okay, the emperor wears no clothes? What next?”

A well-meaning loyal subject should tell the emperor that he’s naked, and help him dress up for the parade. If the emperor insists that he has his imperial garb on and threatens his loyal subject with death, what next? Just lie down and wait for the naked emperor to pull the trigger?

  328. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To Ka Enchong:

“When an infant starts learning how to walk and stumbles after a few steps, do we tell him to give up?”

At the latest, an infant can walk at age 18 months!

Wala syang kinalaman sa development ng business and shopping districts. Marami nang schools, may university pa, libre sine and medical care sa Makati Med? Naku, with all the resources of makati at his disposal, that’s the least he can do.

“Sang-ayon ako rito. Kaya lang, who’s going to train/educate these hungry bunch?”

Alin ba ang may sure return of investment – pagtatatalak or the massive education/training of our kababayans who need them?

“Let us, in our own little ways, help in training/educating the hungry so they’d vote with their heads, not with their stomachs. It may be very difficult, but it can be done”

Yes, collectively, it can be done. One thing is sure, it can’t be accomplised by “PATALSIKIN NA NOW NA”

    True. Korek.

Pero take note, Korea was already an economic miracle when those resignations happened!

    True. Korek.

Pero take note, Japan was already an economic superpower when those resignations happened!

“Taiwan?

Even as recent as 1975, medyo mas angat pa ang ‘Pinas sa Taiwan. In less than two decades, we are eating their dust.

Mamili na lang tayo. Saan ba tayo dapat mag-concentrate, dahil isa lang ang kaya nating i-major (parang college):

    ang pagtatatalak o job creation?

(job creation entails many things – matching skills, skills training, education, spreading economic activity outside Metro Manila to the countrysides, helping make returning OFWs entrepreneurs, etc)

Dapat, hanggang minor subject lang ang pagtatatalak.

Siguro, if our country is as rich as Taiwan or Korea already, then puwede na tayong magtatatalak 24/7. Dahil di na problema ang sikmura, we can move on to other problems.

“A well-meaning loyal subject should tell the emperor that he’s naked, and help him dress up for the parade.” ”

Then why don’t we just help the present government move on?

“If the emperor insists that he has his imperial garb on and threatens his loyal subject with death, what next?”

At that context, the subject feels he is dispensable.

“Just lie down and wait for the naked emperor to pull the trigger?”

I don’t know. Subjects fell they are dispensable at the hands of the emperor, kaya, probably, the subject could lie down and wait for the pulling of the trigger.

But if the subject has an alternative garb, he can convince the emperor that his alternative garb is much much better than the ‘naked cloth’ he is wearing.

Saka take note – if the emperor wears no clothes, the solution is to tell him so, get him to wear real clothes.

    Not replacing the emperor.

  329. Mrivera Mrivera

“Saka take note – if the emperor wears no clothes, the solution is to tell him so, get him to wear real clothes.

    Not replacing the emperor.”

but why was erap replaced? FPJ cheated? bro eddie vilanueva’s camp deserted?

tsk. tsk. tsk. where can you catch the fish?

  330. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    “but why was erap replaced?”

haay, denial king ka talaga. Erap was replaced by the sovereign will of the people. ayun, lumabas din ang katotohanan. maka-erap ka lang kasi. sabi ko na nga ba eh something lies beneath that veneer of righteous indignation – walang pinagkaiba sa G-rand A-lliance of G-enuine O-pposition, “ALIS DYAN, KAMI NAMAN ULI!”

    “FPJ cheated?”

di ko alam. baka ikaw alam mo

    “bro eddie vilanueva’s camp deserted?”

“tsk. tsk. tsk. where can you catch the fish?”

simple. go where the fish are

  331. Mrivera Mrivera

  332. “At the latest, an infant can walk at age 18 months!”

Tama. It’s still too early to surrender and start considering the Philippines as a special case.

“ang sagot sa tanong mo – tayong lahat.”

    Agree.

“Yes, collectively, it can be done. One thing is sure, it can’t be accomplised by “PATALSIKIN NA NOW NA”

Agree din ako rito, with a little revision:

Yes, collectively, it can be done. One thing is sure, it can’t be accomplised by “PATALSIKIN NA NOW NA” ALONE.

Wala syang kinalaman sa development ng business and shopping districts. Marami nang schools, may university pa, libre sine and medical care sa Makati Med? Naku, with all the resources of makati at his disposal, that’s the least he can do.”

Pero, can’t we say the same things about GMA, too? At least, I did not hear Binay praising himself for doing the least he can, the way GMA claims credit for everything right while assigning the blame on the media, the opposition, the left, and the people in general for everything that goes wrong.

What made Japan and South Korea the powers that they were when those resignations happened? Was it purely the absence of “talakan”? Or, was it the presence of a world power too eager impose its ideology in these parts, lest it lose the cold war?

“Napaka-advanced naman nila economically! Even as recent as 1975, medyo mas angat pa ang ‘Pinas sa Taiwan. In less than two decades, we are eating their dust.”

Even as early as 1935, nagtatatalak na tayo. We were already way ahead of Taiwan and South Korea. What happened in 1972? Ipinagbawal ang pagtalak. Kaya, in less than two decades, we are eating their dust.

“Mamili na lang tayo. Saan ba tayo dapat mag-concentrate, dahil isa lang ang kaya nating i-major (parang college):

    ang pagtatatalak o job creation?”

Tama ka rito. Mag-major tayo sa job creation. Sino bang nagsabing gawin nating bread and butter ang pagtatalak? 86 million Filipinos (tama ba?), more than half of whom does not trust the government. Out of 43 million, ilan ang tumatalak?

“Saka take note – if the emperor wears no clothes, the solution is to tell him so, get him to wear real clothes.”

Agree- and this is exactly what I said.

But, if the emperor insists that he is already wearing real clothes and tries to kill the loyal subject who was simply telling the truth, maybe it’s about time to REPLACE the emperor.

  333. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To Ka Enchong:

“Tama. It’s still too early to surrender and start considering the Philippines as a special case”

Look, I have not given up on our country. The point is, we have been focusing on the presidency as the one who will bring us to the promsied land for two decades. Two decades are already shouting to us – the president can’t do it!

“Yes, collectively, it can be done. One thing is sure, it can’t be accomplised by “PATALSIKIN NA NOW NA” ALONE.”

    Agreed.

At least, I did not hear Binay praising himself for doing the least he can, the way GMA claims credit for everything right while assigning the blame on the media, the opposition, the left, and the people in general for everything that goes wrong”

As for hearing from Binay – you wont hear from him in the front pages most of the time. Di tulad ni GMA.

As for blaming everybody but herself – agreed.

“What made Japan and South Korea the powers that they were when those resignations happened? Was it purely the absence of “talakan”? Or, was it the presence of a world power too eager impose its ideology in these parts, lest it lose the cold war?”

My point is – Japan and South Korea never became economic powers due to the pagtatatalak ng kanilang citizens.

“Even as early as 1935, nagtatatalak na tayo”

Ano ba yung tinatalakan natinnung 1935? di ko alam yun.

“What happened in 1972? Ipinagbawal ang pagtalak. Kaya, in less than two decades, we are eating their dust”

Sorry to differ, but Korea became an economic power due to its almost dictatorial prediential regime

Saka two decades na wala si Marcos. Di na natin syang pwedeng gawin scapegoat. Bsides, na-restore na ang pagtatatalak in 1986. What did it accomplish? The best democracy in Asia. Never mind if close to half of the population sleep with empty stomachs.
“Out of 43 million, ilan ang tumatalak?

    Point taken.

Konti nga, pero their influence can be tremendous. Ang lakas ng epekto ng paga-agitate.

At the same time, if channeled to other endeavors, like job creation, ang lakas din ng epekto, for the good of many pa.

“But, if the emperor insists that he is already wearing real clothes and tries to kill the loyal subject who was simply telling the truth, maybe it’s about time to REPLACE the emperor”

What? You want to replace the emperor just because he insists on staying naked?

  334. Mrivera Mrivera

  335. Anthony:

“What? You want to replace the emperor just because he insists on staying naked?? No, replace the emperor for killing him who told him he’s naked.

Tungkol kay Aling Gloria, that she’s a foregone conclusion till 2010, okey sa akin yan.

Personally, I am happy with the quality of exchanges we had. We may be espousing different political convictions, yet, we were able to prove that discussions, even debate, can be done without resorting to ad hominem attacks. ‘Yun na nga lang, we may end up resorting to arguing our sides ad infinitum.

We brought our points out in the preceding exchanges. We probably won’t run out of points, and we still can bring them out in succeeding threads. See you there, then.

  336. A true Filipino those who are work without favor, Because being Filipino is a very good of living but as of this day being a filipino is so hard ( dama anf kahirapan) Corruption among our employees and politics they putting down our country but fruitful for them corruptness’s they buy a lots of things they want but the tax payers are losers.

  338. ej ej

Like father like son, like son like father.
